CHAMPAGNE For many people, France continues to be the world's most important and prestigious wine producing country. For centuries, it has not only produced wine in greater volume than most other countries, but has also historically matched this quantity with quality. One of France’s most attractive and enduring attributes is its diversity. The varied range of climates and soil types allows it to produce wildly different styles of wine. Take for instance Bordeaux, arguably France’s most iconic region, where vintages can vary hugely each year due to the maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Compare this with the Languedoc in the south,

where the vines routinely enjoy warm summers and mild winters. Or contrast the Continental climate of regions like Alsace and Burgundy, where vintners experience long warm summers but are forced to endure very cold winters. France’s diverse climatic conditions are also complemented by the country’s varied geology and topography. Whether it’s the silex soils of Pouilly-Fumé, the gravel of the Medoc or the steep, amphitheater-like slopes of Pouilly-Fuissé, each play a role in producing distinctive, iconic wines known the world over.

One of the unique things about Alsace is its geography. To its immediate west lie the Vosges Mountains, which experience more rainfall each year than most other areas of France. However, to the east of the mountains, where Alsace is located, it is the driest part of France thanks to the rain shield created by the mountains. Another unusual quirk of Alsace is that its wines are labelled by variety. Noble grapes like Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat take centre stage on the labels from this region (unlike much of the rest of France). Alsatian wine can be best characterised by aroma and texture. The wines from grapes like Riesling and Sylvaner are able to display the freshness and acidity found over the border in Germany, but tend to offer more weight and roundness. Pinot Gris also adopts this profile, being made in a rich (and often slightly sweet) style making it barely recognisable from the grape's Italian rendition, Pinot Grigio.

ALSACE HAS THE WIDEST RANGE OF TOPOGRAPHIES AND CLIMATES OF ALL OF THE FRENCH REGIONS.

BORDEAUX

In the world of wine, there are few, if any, regions that can rival Bordeaux in terms of prestige and reputation. Although much of Bordeaux’s status is carried by a handful of producers in the Margaux, Pauillac, Pomerol and St. Emilion appellations, there are in fact over 10,000 producers in Bordeaux. The vast majority of red wines are blends and this is a function of the region’s geography. Bordeaux’s long and relatively warm summers provide ideal conditions for growing later ripening red grapes. The two most dominant grapes, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon ripen at different times and therefore tend to be used in different proportions from vintage to vintage. In cooler years, where Cabernet may struggle to ripen, a larger proportion of the earlier-ripening Merlot will be used and vice versa.

THERE ARE FEW, IF ANY, REGIONS THAT CAN RIVAL BORDEAUX IN TERMS OF PRESTIGE AND REPUTATION.

C H ÂT E A U G A R R A U D BORDEAUX - LALANDE-DE-POMEROL

The Château Garraud vineyard was planted in the early middle of the 19th century by the Count de Kermartin. It is located on a variety of rich terroirs: gravel, clay-gravel, deep clay with "crasse de fer", high on the Pomerol plateau. The wine is made predominantly of Merlot and Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 40 years. The vineyards are in a prime location for sun and drainage, which helps the grapes mature and ripen. The wine is aged in oak barrels, a third of which are one year old.

Château Crabitey is situated 20 miles to the south of Bordeaux in the wine region of Graves. It was built in 1872 by Franciscan nuns who planted vines to provide an income for the Château which they used as an orphanage. The estate was then purchased in 1985 by JeanRalph de Butler and is now run by his son, Arnaud. The vineyards of the Graves benefit from the cooling influence of the Garonne river just to east, and the deep gravel soils add minerality and complexity to the wines.

Château Cissac is located right in the heart of the Médoc region. Its exceptional terroir adjoins that of the prestigious Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac appellations and extends to around a hundred hectares. The vineyards are situated in an area which is sheltered by the village of Cissac and the forests which surround it. The soil mainly consists of sandy gravel on top of clay and limestone. In keeping with Médoc tradition, the vineyards are planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon. This variety is ideally suited to the Médoc’s gravel soils, where it can successfully ripen and develop its strength and characteristic black fruit aromas. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also play a supporting role.

Burgundy is located in the central eastern part of France and is comprised of six regions: Chablis, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais, Beaujolais, Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The French like to speak of terroir, Burgundy has this in spades. In Burgundy, one can often see the ‘terroir’ change within metres, thus adding to the complexity and distinctiveness of its wines. It is this diversity of Burgundy’s soil types that allow its winemakers to create wines that are intense and powerful, whilst having nuance and restraint. For many, these wines are the ultimate expression of what the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes can achieve.

BURGUNDY'S SOILS ALLOW ITS WINEMAKERS TO CREATE WINES THAT ARE INTENSE AND POWERFUL, WHILST HAVING NUANCE AND RESTRAINT.

BEAUJOLAIS

Beaujolais is a wine region located in the east of France, directly south of Burgundy. It is famous for producing light-bodied, fruity red wines from the Gamay grape. There are several types of Beaujolais wines. If the label simply states Beaujolais, the wine will be the most basic quality. The next level up is Beaujolais Village which represents better quality wines made from grapes which can be taken from across the Beaujolais region. Finally, there are the 10 “Crus” – these are ten villages long recognised as producing the best wine in the region. They are: Juliénas, Chénas, Saint-Amour, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly.

Located in the north-east of France, Champagne can lay claims to being the world’s most famous wine region. It is here in this cool, northerly region that winemakers are able to transform thin, tart base wines into rich, layered objects of celebration.Across the 320 Champagne villages, producers make wine from predominantly three grapes – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The vast majority of all Champagne is made in a nonvintage style – that is, a blend of different vintages which can vary greatly in style from producer to producer. Each House has its own style, striving to produce a consistent Champagne each year.

LOCATED IN THE NORTH-EAST OF FRANCE, CHAMPAGNE CAN LAY CLAIMS TO BEING THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS WINE REGION.

The Loire valley is responsible for producing some of France’s most impressive wines. The most easterly end of the Loire is home to the Sauvignon Blanc grape and the famous appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. White wines dominate production in this part of the Loire, although production of Pinot Noir is on the up. Moving west, Sauvignon Blanc is substituted for Chenin Blanc as we discover the joys of the Vouvray appellation and some of the great noble sweet wines of Coteaux-du-Layon.

Domaine de la Chenardière is located in the renowned Coteaux-du-Layon appellation in the Loire’s Anjou district. However, shortly thereafter the vineyard had to be destroyed after the devastating phylloxera virus struck in 1888. It was then not until the 1970’s that the vineyards were revived by the current owners, the Foucaud family. Today, the estate comprises 13 hectares of Cabernet Franc vines with an average age of 25 years. RHÔNE

From a wine perspective, the Rhône Valley is split in two – the northern and southern parts. In the Northern Rhône, single varietal wines thrive. The red grape Syrah dominates the reds and Viognier is the dominant white grape of choice (as well as offerings of Marsanne and Rousanne). The Southern Rhône, in stark contrast, is all about blends. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre – or GSM as they are collectively known – tend to dominate the red wines, with grapes like Cinsault and Carignan often also getting in on the act. Famously, the appellation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows up to 13 different varieties for its red wines!

PROVENCE

Collioure is a village close to the border with Spain, and together with three other villages, it forms the Collioure AOC. This tiny appellation, in the southeast corner of France, is known for producing high quality, powerful, dry red and white wines.

The Côtes Catalanes IGP lies in the south of France, with Spain to its west and the Mediterranean to its south. Most of the area’s vineyards lie on east-facing slopes that are open to marine influences. Sea breezes help to refresh the vineyards during the hot, sunny days and winds from the Pyrenees cool the vineyards at night.

Provence is a wine region in the far south-eastern corner of France, best known for producing quality rosé wines in its warm, mild climate. The long, dry summers provide ideal harvest conditions in most years, leaving the region's growers without worries of rot or disease.

Terrimbo is a venture by Jacky Loos and Philippe Gard of the Coume del Mas winery in Collioure in South-West France. “Terrimbo” takes its name from a beautiful beach indentation of the Mediterranean, south of Banyuls and Collioure where the vineyards are situated. The vineyards and winery are run according to organic practices and in the next 2 years will be officially certified organic. The wine is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan and has been fermented in new oak and subsequently aged in used oak for 18 months. Despite only being the first vintage, this wine has already been awarded 91/100 by The Wine Advocate and 91/100 from Revue des Vins de France.

Luxembourg is a landlocked nation sitting between Belgium, Germany and France. Winemaking is focused around the south-eastern portion of the country where the Mosel River (known as the Moselle) runs for 42km and forms the national border with Germany. It is a small winemaking nation with around 50 wineries and, due to its northerly latitude, one of the world’s coolest wine regions. Wine production is typically focused on white grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc although a little Pinot Noir is grown. Luxembourg also produces a number of high quality, traditional-method sparkling wines known as Crémant de Luxembourg.

PIEDMONT Much like France, Italy is undoubtedly one of the world’s heavyweight wine producing nations, sitting in second place behind France in terms of volume of production. However, one only has to mention names like Barolo, Barbaresco, Amarone, Brunello and you quickly remember that Italy’s vast quantity of production is complemented by some of the world’s most iconic wine regions. One of Italy’s great qualities is the number of native varieties that are planted throughout the country. Over 2000 grape varieties are planted across Italy’s 20 wine regions. Some of these, like Pinot Grigio, Nero d’Avola,

Barbera and Primitivo are more widely known, whereas others are not. This diversity is exciting and makes a refreshing change from the ubiquitous international grapes that can be found time and time again in other countries. That said, perhaps we shouldn’t be too quick to judge the plantings of international varieties in Italy. One only has to look at Italy’s Super-Tuscans – wines that are made predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in close proximity to Tuscany’s coastline. Over the past few decades, these Bordeaux blends have achieved cult status, becoming hugely sought after and demanding astronomical prices.

Campania’s climate and topography allows it to produce some of Italy’s most thought-provoking wines. Campania’s very warm growing season is tempered by vineyards that sit high up in the Avellino hills. Here, good aspect and exposure to the sun allows the grapes to achieve impressive ripeness while the cooling influence of altitude and wind mean the grapes crucially retain acidity. Aglianico is Campania’s red grape of choice. Naturally high in acidity, this thick-skinned grape is known for producing well-structured wines with musky red berry flavours. You can find the finest expression of Aglianico being produced in the Taurasi DOCG. A number of white grapes are grown in Campania but Fiano and Greco are the two leading the pack.

Emilia-Romagna is a region in the north of Italy, wedged between Tuscany to the south and Veneto to the north. In wine terms, one of Emilia-Romagna’s calling cards is Lambrusco. Although Lambrusco is generically used to refer to a style of wine – approachable, red, sparkling – it is more accurately named after the red grape responsible for producing these wines. Nowadays, most Lambrusco wines are produced using the Charmat method although a number of wines still undergo the more demanding, labour intensive Méthode Traditionelle. Whilst certain Lambrusco producers may have been guilty of sub-par offerings over the past couple of decades, a revival is in full-swing in Emilia-Romagna where a number of producers are revolutionizing the image of Lambrusco.

Whilst Piedmont is located in Italy’s north-west, it unquestionably sits at the heart of the country's production of fine wine. Boasting names like Barolo, Barbaresco, Moscato d’Asti, Piedmont has racked up more DOCG wines than any other region in Italy. The red Nebbiolo grape could be said to be the king of the region, responsible for two of Italy’s most famous red DOCGs, Barolo and Barbaresco. Other red grapes capable of producing high quality red wines at more approachable prices include Barbera and Dolcetto. Piedmont also produces some top class white wine. By championing the Cortese grape, the Gavi region has risen to fame with its crisp, dry whites. And then, of course, there is Moscato d’Asti – sweet, slightly sparkling and low in alcohol, this wine really is a style to itself.

Historically, Puglia has been known more for producing grapes destined for distillation and bulk wine rather than for quality. TUSCANY Unlike many of the other wine regions in Italy, Tuscany is not a heavyweight when it comes to quantity. However, it certainly delivers in terms of the country’s most famous fine wines. Tuscany is located in the west part of central Italy. Its geography is characterised by picturesque rolling green hills running inland adjacent to the Tyrrhenian Sea along its coastline. Here, Sangiovese is the red grape of choice. It is responsible for the vast majority of Tuscany’s icon wines – Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The notable exceptions are Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon which form the basis of the cult Super-Tuscan wines produced in close proximity to the Tuscan coastline.

When Conte first arrived at the Fattoria, it was in a state of disrepair – tired buildings presided over neglected vines. However, thanks to Conte’s vision and passion, the old buildings were rebuilt, new vineyards were planted and the old, neglected vineyards were restored to their former glory. SPAIN

OVER RECENT DECADES

Both in terms of quality and quantity, Spain is a worldclass producer. Currently, Spain has more vineyard acreage than any other country in the world. Only France and Italy manage to bottle more wine than Spain and this discrepancy is due to the fact that Spain’s vineyards generally have older vines growing in less fertile soil which means lower yields. Across Spain’s 17 regions, growing conditions vary greatly. Take for example, the green rolling hills of Galicia in the northwest, where rainfall is high and the fresh and citrusy Albarino grape thrives. Compare this to Navarra in the north-east where the climate is semi-arid meaning high temperatures and fuller, deeper wines.

SPAIN HAS EVOLVED INTO A PRODUCER OF SOME OF THE MOST ORIGINAL AND EXCITING WINES IN THE WORLD.

PORTUGAL Cálem

Portugal will always be known for its sweet fortified Port wine. But, when it comes to non-fortified wines, Portugal is one of the world’s true underdogs. One of Portugal’s greatest trump cards is its rich array of native grape varieties. Rather than pandering to popular demand by planting international varieties, the Portuguese have kept the faith with their white and red indigenous grapes which represent the true character of the country’s vintners.

GERMANY The overall quality of Riesling wine being produced worldwide has never been so high. Riesling is a wonderfully versatile grape and can be produced in many different styles, ranging from the bone dry to the lusciously sweet. It is an exciting time for German Riesling, in particular. Aromatic, dry German Rieslings are not only great wines by the glass but also are ideal with seafood, fish and white meats.

The spectrum of Rieslings that they produce range from the dry in the case of the Classic and Grosses Gewächs; lively and off-dry for the Kabinett; and lusciously sweet for their Auslese. Their top vineyard is the Annaberg located around the town of Schweich. Michael Gindl began making wine at his family estate in the Weinviertel when he was in his teens. Inspired by the wines of his grandfather which were made with nearly no manipulation or intervention, Michael, now 31, converted his winery and 10 hectares of vineyards to biodynamic practices. In the cellar, Michael’s wines undergo native fermentation, extended aging on lees, maceration on the skins and are bottled unfiltered. For aging and fermentation he uses a mix of stainless steel and large wooden barrels. The barrels themselves are made using oak and acacia harvested from his own land.

GREECE THE EMERGENCE OF

Wine production can be found all over Greece although the scale, style and quality can vary significantly from region to region. Over the past few decades the wine scene has been changing in a big way. A new generation of winemakers has evolved coupled with greater investment in the wine industry. Vineyard acreage has been steadily decreasing as growers shift their focus towards higher quality sites. Many wineries have made the decision to plant international varieties alongside indigenous Greek grapes in an attempt to appeal to the export market, although the vast majority of Greek wine continues to be consumed domestically. Although it is still early days for the quality winemaking industry in Greece, the emergence of boutique wineries, exciting and unusual indigenous varieties and investment in the wine industry signals exciting times ahead.

ENGLAND WHEN IT COMES TO

When it comes to sparkling wine, the early signs are present that England could be shaping up to be something world class. It is encouraging to see winemakers using high quality grape varieties that have been tried and tested for centuries on sparkling wine production – Chardonnay and Pinot Noir make up 40% of vineyard plantings. The climate in the South of England is similar to Champagne – it is only on average 1° to 2° Celsius cooler. The soils in Sussex and Kent (where many of the top vineyards lie) are predominantly chalk and limestone which are similar to many areas of Champagne. Another plus for English sparkling wine is that it is often vintage dated, unlike the vast majority of Champagne which is blended to make a nonvintage, house style. This can certainly be seen as a positive as it allows the character and individuality of the wine and vintage to shine through.

CHILE CHILE REMAINS

Chile remains one of the most consistently reliable and value driven wine producing countries out there. Despite being only 100 miles wide, Chile experiences a great deal of climatic variation from east to west. Along its west coast lies the Pacific Ocean which brings cooling coastal breezes to its vineyards. On its eastern borders dwell the Andes Mountains, where many vineyards are sheltered from maritime breezes but benefit from the cooling influence of altitude.

It has also been encouraging to see Chile adopting a signature grape variety – Carmenère. Originally, a Bordeaux variety, Carmenère was thought to be extinct following the phylloxera virus in the mid-nineteenth century. However, it was rediscovered by a pioneering group of scientists in the 1990’s who identified the variety masquerading as Merlot. Chile has been championing it ever since.

CAPE TOWN Stellenbosch remains the most important district for the HERMANUS production of fine wine, as well as the oldest with the first Whalehaven Idiom vineyard plantings dating back to the 1690’s. Stellenbosch’s climate is relatively hot and dry, although a cooling influence comes from the coast to its south, with winds blowing through the vineyards in the afternoons keeping the grapes refreshed. Another region of particular interest is Hermanus which is situated by Walker Bay in close proximity to the coast. The location of the vineyards allows the grapes to experience much cooler temperatures than they would in Stellenbosch. This makes perfect territory for producing elegant wines in a balanced, cool-climate style.

The Maverick Barossa incorporates both Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, making it one of the only areas in Australia to have neighbouring warm and cool climate growing conditions. Some of the country’s most sought-after wines are produced here, predominantly from the Shiraz grape in the Barossa Valley and Riesling in the Eden Valley. One of Australia’s other top regions, just south of Adelaide, is McLaren Vale. McLaren Vale’s climatic diversity has helped producers successfully embrace a range of grape varieties, most notably Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Maverick’s biodynamic farming allows the creation of intense, pure, low-yielding fruit. The winery has its own cattle from which it takes manure and inserts it into 100 cow horns each year. These horns are then buried deep underground in the vineyard where they remain during the winter months. The resulting material is then energised in a 1,000 litre copper biodynamiser and sprayed on the vineyards.

USA The United States is making some seriously exciting wine. Gone are the days since Napa alone carried the country’s crown for winemaking brilliance. There is now world-class wine being made throughout the States. Sonoma is challenging Napa’s title as the premier growing region and world-class wines can be found a few miles north of Los Angeles all the way up to Mendocino County in the north. Also, there is so much more to the US than only California. The Pacific Northwest has exploded in terms of wine production and is now starting to get a

reputation for quality and diversity on the world stage. Oregon’s geography, benefiting from the cool, maritime breezes from the Pacific Ocean, allows it to produce elegant, aromatic wines from Pinot Noir and Riesling. Washington, to the north of Oregon, conversely produces its wine in warm, semi-arid conditions in the east of the State. Here, bigger, fuller-bodied wines are made from the likes of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to a very high standard.

PEDRONCELLI CALIFORNIA - SONOMA

In 1927, Giovanni Pedroncelli purchased 25 acres of Zinfandel vines to the west of Geyserville in Sonoma County. Giovanni’s first challenge after acquiring the vineyards and winery was to survive Prohibition – no small feat! Miraculously, he was able to overcome this challenge, largely by selling grapes to home winemakers.

WHITE

Once Prohibition ended in 1933, he set out to acquire more land for planting vines with the aim of establishing his winery as one of the leading estates in Sonoma. It is thanks to this early work that the Pedroncelli estate is seen today as one of the pioneers on the Northern Californian wine scene. The estate is now run by the third generation of the Pedroncelli family and encompasses 105 acres of vineyards spread across Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley.

G O R D O N E S TAT E WASHINGTON - COLUMBIA VALLEY

When brothers, Jeff and Bill Gordon planted their first vineyards in Washington’s Columbia Valley back in 1980, there were just 19 wineries in the State. Today, there are over 750 wineries. Even to this day, the Gordon family remains one of only ten wineries in Washington using 100% estate grown grapes to produce their award-winning wines.

Gordon Estate’s vineyards are located in the dry, hot south-east of Washington, favouring varieties that ripen late and lend themselves to a fuller bodied style of wine. It is no surprise therefore that it’s most planted grapes include Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.

E L K COV E OREGON - WILLAMETTE VALLEY

In 1974, Joe Campbell, a Harvard graduate and ER doctor fulfilled his lifelong ambition of becoming a winemaker by establishing Elk Cove winery in Oregon’s now renowned Willamette Valley. In 1999 Joe’s son, Adam, took over as head winemaker. Aged only three when the family moved to the Elk Cove estate, he was in the perfect place to continue the family winemaking tradition.

JAPAN

OVER THE LAST 20

You may be surprised to read that Japan has actually been making wine since as far back as the mid-nineteenth century. Admittedly, until recently, quality levels have varied greatly from producer to producer. But, over the last 20 years, a wine revolution has been taking place in Japan.

YEARS, A WINE

YAMANASHI PREFECTURE

This revolution has arisen out of the Yamanashi Prefecture, about 100km west of Tokyo. Surrounded by Mount Fuji, this region is not only known for its breath-taking scenery but has also established itself as the premier wine growing region in Japan. The main focus of the wineries in this region – of which there are

around 80 – has been on the Koshu grape. This native grape variety is said to have travelled the Silk Road across Central Asia from the Caucasus to China and then to Japan around a thousand years ago. The long summer days and well-drained volcanic soils of the Yamanashi Prefecture allow the winemakers in the region to produce wines from the Koshu grape that are fresh, citrusy, and have a distinct mineral character.

LUMIERE YAMANASHI PREFECTURE

The Lumiere winery was founded in 1855 by Tokuyoshi Furuya, the great-grandfather of the present owner, Toshihiko Tsukamoto. In the mid-1960’s, Toshihiko Tsukamoto decided to rebuild the winery using modern technology and renamed it Lumiere (previously it had been called Koshu-en).

S PA R K L I N G

Today, the winery is run by 5th generation winemaker Shigeki Kida who oversees Lumiere's winemaking operations. The winery owns 3 hectares of vines and sources grapes under contract from a further 27 hectares of vines in the Yamanashi Prefecture. Lumiere spares no effort in its winemaking endeavours and has consistently won international awards over the last 25 years.
