2 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Dear Friends, Welcome to this edition of the Heritage Headlines. We are so excited to launch the new 2022-2023 Program Year along with its theme “Shine.” Over the past few years, we have focused on the themes of Chrysalis, Chosen, Live Free… it is now time to SHINE! To some, these days may seem dark due to the battles of ideals and values along with the physical wars that engulf our globe. But to Christians, these days are full of potential… the potential to share the light and hope of the Gospel to a desperate world in need of salvation. It is a time to SHINE! Each believer is very much like the moon that rotates on its axis. The moon does not generate its own light but it absorbs light from the sun. Similarly, we cannot create our own light. Instead, we can share the light of our Lord because the Holy Spirit lives within us, allowing us to “absorb” the love of our Father and share it with others. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” We have the privilege and responsibility to reflect God’s light. In addition to reflecting light given by the sun, a moon lights the evening sky. We have all basked in the light of a full moon, allowing us to see clearly despite darkness. Such is true of Christians who “put on the armor of God” (Ephesians 6:11) and allow “their light to so shine before man” (Matthew 5:16). The Holy Word of God in the Bible is called the “light that shines in a dark place” in 2 Peter 1:19. And when that Light is in our hearts, God can use us to shine in a dark place as well. 1 Corinthians 4:6 says, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” If we “blend in” and don’t look or act any different than our non-Christians friends and neighbors, how can we SHINE God’s light into the darkness? We are called to stand out, to be set apart for His glory. Philippians 2:15 says that we “shine as lights in the world.” Jesus told His disciples, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16). As Christians, we are disciples of Christ. All that we do should bring glory to God so that others see Him through us. May this issue challenge your heart as you seek to SHINE God’s love in the dark places of our world. I pray that you be richly blessed as you serve in His name,

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. —Matthew 5:14-16, NIV

SERVICESTORIES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

VIRGINIA GIRLS AID LOCAL WOMEN IN CRISIS American Heritage Girls helps foster a love for Christ and compassion for others through community service projects. When the young ladies of VA2017 at Blue Ridge Church in Christiansburg, Virginia set out to serve, they became the hands and feet of Christ to victims of domestic violence. In late March, they served the Women’s Resource Center of River Valley by packing 100 care kits for the clients who utilize this vital facility. Whether it be warm socks, a new toothbrush, or a thoughtful word of encouragement, these girls showed that the love of Christ comes in many forms. Compassion and Resourcefulness are just two ways this Troop is living out the AHG Creed in their area! 10 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

TEXAS PATRIOT JOINS LOCAL EFFORT TO END CHILDHOOD HUNGER AHG Girl Members are wonderfully compassionate and delightfully resourceful; one need only hear of their creative service projects nationwide to know of this reality! Lauren, a Patriot in TX1318, worked with Kids’ Meals in Houston to bring hope and feed hungry preschool-aged children in the community. Kids’ Meals mission is to end childhood hunger by delivering five nutritious weekly meals to preschool children in decorated bags at their doorstep. This helps a child feel loved and delivers a message of hope. Lauren lent her artistic talent in decorating 627 bags, along with her Troop, who decorated an additional 600 bags. She has also volunteered with Kids’ Meals making sandwiches, packing meals, and sorting food. In one volunteer day alone, she helped pack over 1,000 lunches—putting her just halfway to the goal she set for herself this year.

OHIO GIRLS LEARN BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES FROM PLANTING CHARTER ORGANIZATION GARDENS

In the fall, OH1436 participated in a flower bulb planting service project and an ongoing Bible lesson for their Charter Organization, Countryside Church of the Nazarene. Combined with a Bible lesson about John 12:24-25, the girls wrote on small pieces of paper and buried them under the flower bulbs symbolizing buried sins and new life in Christ. The girls planted 56 flower bulbs and then waited through the long, cold winter until spring burst forth with signs of life! From tiny leaves sprouting in March to full plants in April, the girls learned about service, patience, and giving back to the Charter Organization. Brynlee, a Tenderheart, said her favorite part of the project was “seeing the beautiful flowers because it showed me God’s beauty.” Thanks to their efforts, churchgoers enjoyed the beautiful blooms—a gift that will keep on giving each spring.

GIRLSTORIES INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING AND FRIENDSHIP

TEXAS TROOP CELEBRATES CULTURAL HERITAGE THIS EASTER The girls of San Antonio Troop TX0334, chartered through Calvary Hills Baptist Church, celebrated Easter with a morning of casarone crafting! A cascarón is a hollowed-out chicken egg filled with confetti, typically decorated in cheerful colors. Cascarónes are common throughout Mexico and are similar to Easter eggs. In Mexico they are generally used during Carnival, but in American and Mexican border towns, the cultures have combined to make them a popular Easter tradition! The goal is to try to sneak up behind someone and break a cascarón over their head, sending confetti everywhere! It’s a wonderfully 12 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

messy and joyful game—one thoroughly enjoyed by girls and leaders alike! “I like making them because it’s like making an Easter toy. We sneak up on each other, break the cascarón on each other’s head and then say, ‘Happy Easter! I love you!’ If you’re not sneaky enough, you end up chasing the other person to get them with the cascarón. By the end of the day, everyone’s hair is full of confetti. It’s a lot of fun! I like seeing the reaction of the other person when I get them. We do the same thing during Fiesta time here in San Antonio,” said Christalina, an Explorer.

CHILDREN’S FAIR OFFERS AHG GIRL OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS AHG Troops are great at connecting their Girl Members with community opportunities. In Ocala, FL1114 Pioneer Hadassi, took advantage of a local Children’s Fair event held this spring to showcase her crocheted works of art. This fun event inspires children to discover their inner entrepreneur by giving them the opportunity to showcase their very own products or services in a marketplace setting. Hadassi had a wonderful time hosting her own table at the event and selling her creations. “My mom and grandma like to crochet, so I’m carrying on a family tradition, and it’s great that I can raise money for my Troop by selling the things I made. For this [Children’s] Business Fair, I crocheted scrunchies, hair clips, bracelets, and blankets for baby dolls,” said Hadassi.

MOCK TRIAL HELPS PIONEER CULTIVATE CITIZENSHIP, COMMUNICATION, AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS For more information on how to organize a G.R.I.T. WITH GRACE event for your Troop, check out store.americanheritagegirls. org/pages/grit-with-grace

As American Heritage Girls grow into successful women of integrity, certain activities help them cultivate specific skills to better understand their place as a citizen of their community and this nation. This past April, OK2810 Pioneer Anna participated in a Mock Trial event representing both her Troop and her Classical Conversations level group. Anna said the experience helped her to grow “in my speaking skills, teamwork skills, and how to handle myself in court.” She looks forward to implementing her newly learned skills as a Girl Leader in her AHG Troop in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

BADGESTORIES LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE The goal of every AHG Troop is to provide girls with a balanced program, which progresses with the girl - increasing in challenge and skill as she grows in maturity and knowledge. Building on skills they’ve learned during their years

in previous Program Levels, girls can earn badges multiple times by working on them again at various ages. This balanced programming model provides an opportunity for a deeper understanding of valuable life skills. The AHG Program

offers girls 93 different badge options in six Frontiers of skill—Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal WellBeing, and Science & Technology.

ARCHERY BADGE The bow and arrow have played an important part in human history. In ancient times, archery proved an efficient method for hunting. Today the sports of target archery and bow hunting are practiced and enjoyed around the world. The following badge requirements will introduce you to the rules, terms, and skills of target archery. AHG Troops do a phenomenal job connecting with their local communities through service opportunities, fundraising, new member recruitment, and yes, even badge work! When it comes to learning life skills through AHG Badges, there is tremendous value in connecting girls with area professionals to learn from the best. The girls of AR1024 culminated their Archery Badge work with a private class at a local Archery Shooting Range in Springdale, AR. They were able to complete the over two-hour class completely free of charge, but the skills and memories the girls gained are invaluable! From the safety guidelines and physical skills for archery to different types of bows and local archery laws, these girls came away with a new wealth of knowledge of the sport and confidence in themselves.

CARING FOR CREATION BADGE

God has created a beautiful world for us to enjoy! We must learn to be good stewards of His gift of nature for the benefit of our safety, our enjoyment, and for future generations.

The warmer months inspire AHG Troops to explore and enjoy God’s glorious creation! OH3722 took advantage of the opportunity to teach their Tenderhearts and Pathfinders about diligently caring for our planet through a recycling presentation from Mr. Randall, a community member in the recycling industry. Mr. Randall taught girls the valuable (and catchy!) practice of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” According to Tenderheart Unit Level Leader Jenny Jackson, they learned “that we can recycle more than we realize, especially metals.” The lesson artfully weaved together the realities that God’s provision for us is abundant and it is our collective responsibility to take care of the world He’s given us. As a lasting gift reminder, each girl received a recycling t-shirt in addition to the Caring for Creation Badge to wear proudly on her vest! 14 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

WORLD HERITAGE BADGE The United States is known as the world’s melting pot. People from many different countries and cultures call America their home. In order to truly understand America’s roots, we must learn to appreciate the customs and traditions of various cultures.

When an AHG Troop takes on badge work within a Program Level, wonderfully deep learnings and passions can blossom. In PA3031’s case, the World Heritage Badge culminated in a mother-daughter tea event entitled “Trip Around the World”! The girls of the Explorer Unit learned about various countries including China, France, and Kenya, among others. Naudia, an Explorer, researched Italy as a way to honor her best friend who is originally from Sicily. Naudia’s mother, a caterer, helped her plan the menu including homemade tomato sauce, bruschetta,

prosciutto-wrapped mozzarella, and strawberry Italian sodas. Naudia said her favorite part of the badge work was “learning about the different types of food. I get very inspired seeing my mom cook all kinds of delicious food and was really excited that I got to help her and learn how to make dishes from Italy at the same time.” The icing on the cake for this event was that Tenderhearts who attended also earned their World Heritage Badge by completing their requirements!

CHARTER ORGANIZATIONSPOTLIGHT

CALVARY HILLS, BAPTIST CHURCH TX0334 SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS

This issue, AHG is excited to shine a light on Calvary Hills Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX, home to TX0334. Charter Representative Cheryl Wood and Troop Coordinator Jocelyn Whalen reflect on 10 years of chartering an AHG Troop at their church and the significant impact AHG has had on their faith community.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION. Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter

ood Cheryl W

Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization. 16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

WHY DID YOUR CHURCH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP? Calvary Hills Baptist Church has been involved with several youth mission focused organizations such as Girls in Action, Royal Ambassadors, Classical Conversations, and Mother’s Day Out programs. A few members of our church proposed establishing an American Heritage Girls Troop and we were happy to support!

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR CHURCH HAD AN AHG TROOP? This Troop was established in 2012, so we’re celebrating 10 years!

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR YOUTH/FAMILY/WOMEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP? Both the Troop and our church have benefitted from this relationship; in the past few years specifically, we have seen abundant growth in our church population of young families. Several families joined AHG after hearing about it at church, and many families who joined AHG from the local community became church members. It has been an incredibly fruitful and supportive partnership.

HOW ELSE HAS AHG AFFECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MINISTRY EFFORTS? Our AHG Troop has partnered with the church’s community outreach programs, such as Fiesta De Cristo, Trunk or Treat, Food Pantry organization, and food giveaway opportunities. We also host a Bless CHBC night where they honor the Charter Organization by donating time and talent to support facility needs. CHBC has our AHG and Trail Life USA Troops under the ministry of the Missions Team, so we include our youth in many ministry outreach opportunities.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP? We would highly encourage it! Ensure the members of church and Troop leadership are grounded in their faith, foster a great relationship between the AHG Troop Board and the church leadership team, and go all-in to serve and bless one another.

AHG’S TIME TO SHINE:

BEING BEACONS OF CHRIST’S LIGHT THIS PROGRAM YEAR

18 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

As God created the stars to SHINE in the sky, He has created His light to SHINE within each of His followers with the light of His Good News—the salvation He brings!

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 19

H

e reminds us throughout Scripture that even on the darkest night, we can reflect His Light. In today’s culture of darkness, confusion, and conflict, today’s believers must find and emanate His Light stronger than ever before. The light of Christ reminds us we are loved and encourages us to share His Light by shining brightly for others around us to experience His love too. As your Troop and family join other Christ-followers, together we can brightly shine the Light of Christ, piercing the darkness! AHG is looking forward to a year of faith, service, and fun as we kick off the 2022-2023 Program Year Theme—SHINE! WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SHINE? As we enter this new Program Year, we seize a new opportunity to pour into the faith lives of each American Heritage Girl entrusted to our care by God. To be a girl who stands for truth and seeks to be a beacon for Christ in her community is no easy task. Nevertheless, the same words ring true for the girls today as they did back in 1995 for AHG Founder, Patti Garibay— “why curse the darkness, when you can light a candle?” Together we can empower our girls to SHINE boldly for Christ. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word “SHINE” means sending out or reflecting light. In Matthew 5:14, NIV, Scripture says, “You are the light of the world.” The Greek word for “light” in this verse is phōs. It means to shine, especially by rays of light. Without a source of light, there would be no rays of light. It is exciting to parallel this to our relationship with Christ. He is the ultimate source of light, and because of our relationship with Him, we are able to SHINE like rays of His Light. God reminds us He has placed His Light within us to openly and publicly expose His love and character. The Light that comes from God is pure and shines brilliantly. As Christfollowers, the Lord has placed His Light within us to SHINE. Our relationship with Christ allows us to SHINE His love, kindness, forgiveness, and His many attributes for others to see—reflecting His glory! SHINING THROUGH THE DARKNESS In order to encourage our girls to SHINE for Christ, we must know the darkness they are up against. Today’s girls, both Generation Z (those born between 1995-2010) and Generation Alpha (those born 2010-present), live in an unmistakably dark cloud of fear and culturally imposed difficulty. They’ve never known a world without terrorism, an America without war, school years without mass shootings, economic growth without impending threat of another crash…and now, a cough or sneeze without fear of pandemic-level illness. Youth today fear being crippled by debt and being left with an unhealthy planet. Put simply, they are tackling grown-up fears from a young age. Combine those fears with the waywardness of today’s cultural landscape, and it’s easy to see how they might be more susceptible to feelings of anxiety or depression in adolescence compared to children of past generations. Confusion around gender and sexual identity, deep-seated cultural doubt in the existence of God, rising rates of self-harm and attempted suicide … it can feel impossible to cut through the dark cultural cloud that envelopes our girls. But God! He redeems us, pulling us out of darkness and into His Light. Paul’s letter to the Colossians speaks to this truth: “For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:13-14, NIV). By recognizing our deep reliance on God and connecting with other believers to form the community He designed us for, we can teach our girls what it means to be hope-filled, and Spirit-led young women of integrity. SEEKING A PLACE TO SHINE Parents of today’s girls are looking for hope in today’s dark world. In fact, recent data shows a reported 73% of parents, regardless of faith tradition

20 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

or no religion at all, are concerned about their children’s spiritual development, and 83% desire to see their children form deeper, more meaningful relationships with their peers. Christian parents, specifically, seek a place to counter the culture and find fellowship with like-minded believers—in turn, raising up Christfollowing servant leaders who seek to make the world a brighter, kinder place. With over 50,000 members in over 1,200 Troops, American Heritage Girls is that beacon for faith, service, and fun in communities nationwide. Thanks to a program fully developed and centered around Christ, AHG is a steadfast place of truth, agape love, and growth for girls and the leaders who shepherd them.

Before a girl can SHINE Christ’s light to the world, she must first discover the Light, and confidence, within herself.

Before a girl can SHINE Christ’s light to the world, she must first discover the Light, and confidence, within herself. Learning a wide array of life skills, like those taught through AHG Badge and Award Programs, inspires girls to become lifelong learners and doers. A lifestyle of learning brings with it an interesting paradox—an attitude of confidence, through accomplishment and testing of ability, as well as an attitude of humility, through realizing that there is always more that can be learned. Both of these attitudes are integral to being able to SHINE for Christ. A girl needs confidence in Christ to speak and act boldly in His name but also humbleness of heart to serve and honor others above herself.

SET FORTH AND SHINE It is AHG’s prayer that the call to SHINE for Christ in this 20222023 Program Year would be met with a great zeal to live out the gospel message. May your Troops, girls, volunteers, and families be encouraged and inspired to seek Him first and let your lights SHINE so that others can see your good works and glorify God (Matthew 5:16)!

ALUMNASPOTLIGHT

Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

MEET ELISABETH RUSSELL A master’s student in the field of Biology and a former American Heritage Girl.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the

vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though

there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God

my Savior. The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the

feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights. ”

–Habakkuk 3:17-19, NIV 22 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

As a master’s student in the field of Biology and a former American Heritage Girl with plenty of camping and outdoor adventure experience, she knows a thing or two about God’s creation. She recognizes AHG as a place that fostered her love for the outdoors and gave her both the skills and confidence to live out the calling God placed on her life. Elisabeth joined Cincinnati-area Troop OH3124 as a Tenderheart. Elisabeth’s mom, a homeschooling mother of five children (of which four are girls!), brought Elisabeth and two of her sisters to an AHG Troop meeting when Elisabeth was in first grade. Like most young members, Elisabeth was hesitant to enter the new environment. Inside the doors of North Cincinnati Community Church in Mason, OH was a whole gaggle of girls Elisabeth had never met, but in true AHG fashion, they welcomed her with open arms, gave her a place of belonging, and soon Elisabeth was counting down the days each week until she could see her Troop friends again. Elisabeth quickly integrated into the tightknit Troop. Soon, she was embarking on outdoor adventures and learning valuable life skills like first aid, emergency preparedness, and nature observation. It’s easy to see how Elisabeth’s love for the outdoors can be traced back to her time in AHG. The time she spent on Troop camping trips and daylong excursions gave her a familiarity with God’s creation, and with it, confidence in the great outdoors. Today, Elisabeth puts those valuable skills and confidence to work as she logs countless hours in the field researching the Red-Spotted Toad, a species in need of conservation in the state of Kansas. “I am tracking individual toads through the

Red Hills in South Kansas to document what type of habitat they use. I am also utilizing drone technology which provides the capability to accurately measure habitat characteristics over large spatial scales,” said Elisabeth. This year, Elisabeth will conclude her academic research and write a document that will assist the state in the development of a conservation plan. Elisabeth is set to graduate from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas with a Master of Science in Biology this December. “After graduation I plan to work in the field of wildlife conservation and research, specifically with amphibians and reptiles. I hope to conduct research that will further our understanding of these incredible, yet often underappreciated, animals and contribute to the effective development of conservation policy.” With the great ambition to protect God’s creation comes opportunity to become a leader. Thanks to Elisabeth’s time in AHG, she is poised with the ability to leverage her influence as a Christ-following servant leader. “AHG fostered my leadership skills from a young age,” said Elisabeth. “The most beneficial advice I received during my years in AHG was when my mother was leading our PI/PA Unit. She would often say at our meetings ‘I can lead, and I can follow. Wisdom is knowing when to do which.’ This saying has stuck with me and shaped the way that I have conducted my relationships throughout college, particularly in group projects, and even now in graduate school as I learn how to navigate professional relationships with my colleagues and professors.” But beyond life skills, passion for the outdoors, and leadership abilities, Elisabeth credits the development of her faith life to be the greatest gift of her 12 years in the AHG Program. “AHG

provided a wonderful opportunity for me to watch my female leaders walk with Jesus. As I grew in the program, I had witnessed how my leaders reacted to trials in their lives, how they responded to difficult people and situations, and how they treated us [girls]. By watching them, I was provided [with] great examples of women of faith, whom I trusted deeply, that I could then try to emulate in my own life.” Elisabeth is a SHINING example of how the AHG Program is building women of integrity. Join AHG in praying for her as she enters her final phase of study before embarking in her postgraduate endeavors in the field of wildlife conservation.

Total Supervisory Hours: 13 Overall Service Hours: 330 FUTURE PLANS: Interested in studying in the therapy field WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST REWARDING IN EARNING THE STARS & STRIPES AWARD? From the beginning, God has been present. The fact that I prayed for a place to do my project and not even a week later my mentor remembered an organization named Mercy House and that was exactly what I had envisioned working with. This process has forced me to rely on God in many situations and pray for guidance in all my decisions. In that way, I have grown more than I could have imagined. Earning the Stars & Stripes Award will serve as a reminder to me that God has created me for so much more than what I would ever imagine for myself. It also helped me continue to push myself to do hard things and know that I can do them.

My Stars & and Stripes Award project was a true reflection of my heart and my goal in life. God truly showed me things about myself through this process. I know I can do hard things and that God can change you to be a completely different person than how you started out. I never would have thought I would transform from a shy little girl who would not say a word to anyone she did not know into a young lady who is not afraid to get up in front of people and lead. That shows me how God can take a person and His love can transform her into something new and beautiful just like how I transformed my home and the room at Mercy House.

“The remodeling of our classroom space at Mercy House has been the catalyst for cultivating hearts of gratitude for every good thing that comes to our residents. The gift of this remodel led to massive advancement in our residents from an educational perspective and has allowed them a beautiful space to grow and thrive.” – Saundra Halstead Mercy House Ministries

Announcing:

The 2021-2022 Program Year AHG National Award Recipients

The mission of building women of integrity is an incredible charge from the Lord given to American Heritage Girls. This task is textured with victories and difficulties, giving God a chance to show His beautiful ways of blessing the ministry with faithful and capable partners. AHG National Awards are a small way to recognize some of these incredible people and the outstanding work they do. AHG volunteers are invested in fulfilling the Mission of AHG, and without their partnership in building women of integrity, AHG’s impact on the lives of countless girls would not exist. Please join AHG in congratulating the recipients of the 2021-2022 Program Year AHG National Awards:

FOUNDER’S AWARD

The Founder’s Award is given on behalf of the Founder to an awardee that has exemplified the values of AHG. It is rarely given and usually only bestowed during a Girl Convention (every five years). JoNell Baker, MN0312 Patti Garibay has chosen this year’s awardee based on her amazing Grit with Grace. This woman stared a devastating disease in the face while modeling positivity, strength and an enduring love for her Lord. She shared the Grit that underscored her journey by owning the term “Suck it up Buttercup.” She understood that life is not meant to be easy and that her role was not to complain but rather find joy in the moment. She understood that she was not perfect, but rather a “cracked pot” that allow the love of Christ to shine through her imperfections. She praised the Lord continually and served Him in all she did. Whether it was working in the Global Ministries department of her church, or leading a group of PI/PAs in her local Troop, or encouraging an entire Area Team in the Twin Cities as she served as Area Coordinator, this awardee represented all of the qualities of a woman of integrity. Her spunk, her joy, her perseverance, her enthusiasm, her sense of humor, her love for the Lord and His people are attributes that were admired and inspirational for all who knew her. JoNell was chosen in early May and Patti was so excited to share the good news of this award with her in-person. However, after many surgeries and hospital stays, her body succumbed to the battle. This year’s Founder’s Award is awarded to JoNell Baker who “has fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith.” JoNell joined her Savior on May 13, 2022. JoNell’s husband, Kerry, knew she was receiving this award prior to her passing. He has asked that her precious daughter, Elsie, receive this honor in her mother’s name.

MOLLY PITCHER AWARD

This award recognizes those that come to the aid of others when needed most and giving their gift of time, talents, and resources. Christi Cameron, OR0001 As a member of the AHG Girl Impact Volunteer Team, Christi has provided thousands of ideas, inspiration, and guidance to her fellow AHG volunteers. Thanks to her tireless effort, Christi has breathed new life into the American Heritage Girls Pinterest account, pinning links and extension ideas for badge work to assist leaders in badge completion. This Program Year, she’s pinned content for over 50 badges and is working to have a Pinterest board resourced for every AHG Badge.

MUSTARD SEED AWARD

This award honors an individual who seeks to be a good steward by participating in the expansion of AHG, realizing we are expanding the kingdom of God through the AHG Ministry. Sherry Ohotnicky, MI0138 Sherry has been at the forefront of growing the AHG Ministry’s presence within Catholic dioceses nationwide. As the Chair of the National Catholic Committee, Sherry contributed to the creation of Catholic-specific programming, like the Catholic Faith Awards and Patch Programs. Sherry also serves as an AHG representative on the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. As a military spouse, Sherry used her family’s frequent PCS (Permanent Change of Station) schedule as a catalyst for new Troop development. Where the Ohotnickys went, an AHG Troop was sure to follow!

OUTSTANDING ALUMNA AWARD

This award recognizes an AHG Alumna who has made an outstanding contribution to the American Heritage Girls’ Ministry at a local, regional or national level. Nicole Traicoff, AZ1212 “My favorite thing about working with these girls is their zeal for life; sometimes they are pure chaos, but they have such a joy to experience the world that you just can’t help but be excited alongside them. I can’t imagine my life without this wonderful program and I want to give these girls the same amazing AHG experience that my own leaders gave me throughout the program.”

OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD

This award is presented to a volunteer who goes above and beyond to make their AHG Troop a welcoming, discipling, encouraging, and fostering environment for all girls. Anne Lombard, WA0821 An excerpt from her nomination: “Anne is full of energy, excitement and life. She is continually loyally putting the girls of troop WA0821 first. She is a woman of faith who loves God and whose faith informs her life. This spills out into how she loves the girls and how she encourages them to love one another. She is inclusive of all the girls in the Troop, going above and beyond to make sure that no one is ever overlooked or missed and is sure that all the girls are cared for. Anne loves the Lord and brings her faith to the troop encouraging the girls to love on each other, their families, communities and the Lord.”

PIONEER UNIT LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD This award honors a Unit Leader who shepherds a Pioneer Unit with passion, creativity, and patience.

Melody Wyatt, NE3130 An excerpt from her nomination: “Melody is quick to listen and slow to speak. She takes everyone’s feelings into consideration and treats others the way she wants to be treated. She is humble and servanthearted, which helps the Assistant Unit Leaders feel valued and part of the team. Melody is careful to watch for bullying or unwholesome talk within large group settings, which helps the Girl Members’ relationships with each other. Melody is incredibly understanding of our teen girls. She loves them dearly and trusts God to have big plans for each of their lives. Melody makes sure all the girls are included through the “Covert Encouragers” program that she started with the PI/PAs. She randomly assigns each of the girls another PI/PA girl and has that girl pray for her and leave notes of encouragement. She is open to all of their ideas and inspires them to live up to their full potential based on their strengths.”

TENDERHEART UNIT LEADER OF THE YEAR AWARD This award honors a Unit Leader who shepherds a Tenderheart Unit with passion, creativity, and patience.

Laurie Wraase, CA4673 An excerpt from her nomination: “Laurie’s positivity and love for the girls and other moms as well is an incredible example to me and the whole Troop. She gives tirelessly of her time and energy and is always thinking of new and creative ways to teach the girls. She loves the outdoor events for our Troop is always looking for ways to make sure we are having fun in a safe and growth promoting environment. She is so much more to the Troop than simply the Tenderheart Unit Leader, but that is where her heart shines the brightest…Laurie is always meeting the needs of girls, regardless of their different levels of understanding or ability to participate. She has crafts ready or prepared for the youngest of girls and is always encouraging them to grow in their skills and abilities. She goes above and beyond for one of families in particular by driving to their house and giving them badge work or crafts when they can’t make it to the meetings. She has a special heart for those girls with special needs or learning disabilities.”

Community Partner Award

This award is presented to an individual or company who has impacted a community or communities by raising awareness about the mission of AHG. American Family Association AHG is awarding the Community Partner Award to the American Family Association (AFA) in recognition of their commitment to supporting the ministry across their many platforms. HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT Crystal Matula has been a member of AHG since 2009, where she has been in various leadership capacities in Troops TX1318 and TX0317. She has been a Ministry Expansion Lead (MEL) since 2015.

Sunshine. What does that look like to you? Most people think of the sun and brightness and heat (especially those of us here in the south!). But what about Sonshine? How do we, as leaders and adults in AHG, shine the Son, and how can we ensure our girls and Troops do the same? The opportunities to SHINE Christ to all we encounter are endless! “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16, NIV) That light, God’s Light, shining in our dark world is like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden. Such a city would be a refuge—a place of safety and provision, a place to find rest after a long journey, a place to eat and be refreshed. Many people in our world today need the peace and rest that can only come from Jesus, and it is our privilege and responsibility to shine His Light; to be that beacon in the darkness, to share the hope so desperately needed. To do this, we must be different from the world, to be counter-cultural in such a way that we attract others to Christ while making sure that we are pointing the way to Him. To understand how to SHINE we must go to another verse, John 8:12, NIV: “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” Jesus is the Light of the world and those of us who have Jesus in our hearts carry His Light with us wherever we go. His Light is part of us no matter where we are or what we do. It shows on our faces as we smile at strangers we pass by, as we hold the door open for the lady with packages, as we encourage the veteran with a “thank you”. As members of American Heritage Girls, we have unique opportunities to SHINE the Son in many ways all over our cities through service to our communities, through the fun we have, and through discipleship. As girls of every age participate in service activities such as cleaning up of parks and trails, we show the love we have for our Creator by taking care of His Creation, which glorifies and honors Him. As we serve people by making blankets, collecting food, or writing cards, we SHINE Christ’s love and show the importance He placed on human life to others. Honoring veterans by participating in wreath or flag laying ceremonies, carrying flags in parades, or standing during our national anthem SHINES Jesus to others by respecting and remembering those who, like Christ, gave the ultimate sacrifice. By having fun with each other and taking the time to cultivate relationships, we strengthen the bonds we have as Christians, family, and friends as well as develop our inner circle—much like Jesus did with His disciples. The Light of the world and the Gospel of Christ’s love is then shared to other people through the

discipling of those we encounter. They will see the love we have for Christ, and the love He has for us, and will want that love for themselves. Our American Heritage Girls Ministry provides opportunities to SHINE Christ’s Light in our dark culture. As you go about the business of planning your service activities, think about how you can best SHINE His Light during the activity. Praying before, during, and after the work and singing praise songs while serving are ways to SHINE Christ while working. During registration for the upcoming Program Year, encourage girls and adults to share how they saw God working last year, both with returning members as well as new ones. This is a beautiful way to SHINE in such a way as to “see your good works and give glory to the Father in heaven”, the call placed on believers in Matthew’s Gospel. Even a small light makes a big difference in darkness. Your Troop—girls, adults, and leaders—can all SHINE a light, a beacon that is so needed today.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light SHINE before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16, NIV)

After two years without AHG’s annual Staff Retreat, the men and women who make up the AHG Staff felt beyond blessed to finally come together again. The entire AHG Staff, both local and remote employees, met at Potter’s Ranch in Northern Kentucky for two days packed with camp activities, worship, games, brainstorming, and a whole lot of fellowship. With so many permanently remote Staff Members, this retreat provided the much-needed opportunity to come face-to-face with some colleagues for the very first time! With refreshed hearts and minds, each member of the Staff returned to his or her duties fired up about serving girls, families, and communities through the AHG Ministry.

AHGEQUIP VIRTUAL SPARK TRAINS VOLUNTEERS ON BIBLICAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION After the success of AHGequip VIRTUAL in early 2021, AHG answered volunteer requests to provide more digital training and opportunities to connect with other leaders. AHGequip VIRTUAL Spark provides just that and more! During Spark discussions, AHG Adult Members share their knowledge with other leaders from across the country, forming friendships and connections to support one another on their leadership journey. The decision to lead a Troop is a calling on the lives of AHG volunteers, and AHG, Inc. supports that calling

with training that equips and encourages! AHG offers these quarterly virtual training discussions on various topics relevant to AHG Adult Members. This quarter, attendees representing 126 Troops gathered to discuss a skill vital to the health of a well-functioning Troop—Biblical Conflict Resolution. “I took many notes! It was so well-rounded, from Biblical examples to hearing about different Troop experiences, AHG resources, and books on the topic! I’m so grateful for this opportunity to be prepared for conflict going forward,” said one New Mexico Troop Coordinator. The training also provided tools for leaders to pass along to girls. “I enjoyed the application of some steps and techniques to teach the girls. Our Troop leadership has not experienced conflicts yet, but the Girl Members do experience it in life, so teaching them about role-playing before a conflict happens will be a great life skill,” said one Virginia Troop Vice Coordinator. For information on the next AHGequip VIRTUAL Spark discussion, AHG members can visit AHGresource on AHGfamily, keyword “Spark”.

A NOTE ON SHINE from Linda Grinalds, AHG National Board of Trustees Member Having been born and raised in Rhode Island, otherwise known as the Ocean State, I have always been drawn to the erect, steadfast, and immovable stature of the many lighthouses that guard our shores. While for many they are simply a picturesque symbol of coastal folklore, for the seaman, they are a visual of John the Baptist. They signal nautical position, warn of hidden present dangers, and provide guidance into safe harbors. However, beyond their physical presence, lighthouses illuminate the darkness. In the same way, our immovable God, the “Father of Lights,” provides direction, clarity, and inspiration enabling Christians to navigate through the reefs, around the shallows, and ultimately towards our final safe harbor. The light of His Word directs our steps, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”; the light of His Presence clarifies the muddy waters of confusing crosscurrents by opening the eyes of our understanding, “In thy light, we shall see light”; and finally, the light of His Spirit infuses his people with the inspiration to live and move, “The Lord will light my candle.” But God’s light is not just for those who believe, it is for all creation. Strikingly, Jesus who calls Himself the light of the world, shines that light on us and declares of those who follow Him, “now you are light in the Lord.” Whoah! A Christian is supposed to be an immovable beacon of light?

STAFFSCOOP MICHELLE BECKHAM-CORBIN,

DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS How long have you been working at AHG? 6.5 years

A source of clarity, direction, and inspiration to those who are seeking a heavenly safe harbor? A beacon of hope shining in the darkness? Gratefully, yes. As a young student in search of truth, I travelled up the coast from RI to the culturally historic city of Boston to begin my freshman year at Harvard College. It was there, while studying English, that I met my future husband. He was a very bright light amidst the ivy-covered darkness. First, he emanated a love for his fellow man I had never seen before. One that wasn’t based on performance or likeability. Secondly, he walked a path that was different from the JD/ MBA track I admired. As one of the few Marines on campus, he valued service to country, family, and friends above the pursuit of his own selfish ends. And finally, he spoke unabashedly of a heavenly Kingdom reserved only for those who believe. Apparently, despite adhering to my personally crafted individualized moral code of conduct, I wouldn’t have been admitted into that particular safe harbor…but I relished the light and hungered to know more.

His Immovable Conspicuous Light

Thirty-five years later, God’s light continues to SHINE through the heart, actions, and words of my husband, providing clarity, direction, and inspiration to me, our three sons, and the Greater Cincinnati area we now call home. Sometimes the greatest rays of Light shine not from houses made of stone but human hearts (2 Cor. 3:3). Shine on American Heritage Girls. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

What do you do in your position? I lead an amazing team of creative professionals responsible for all aspects of marketing, advertising, and communications including print, digital, video, radio features, website, messaging, and much more! I also work with contractors such as our PR/Media firm, Hamilton Strategies, and our radio feature production company, Bob Allen Audio. What’s your favorite part of working at AHG? Creating content that raises awareness about the wonderful ministry of American Heritage Girls. Additionally, it has been an honor and a privilege to be part of the start-up and continuation of the Raising Godly Girls brand of blog posts, radio features, and e-books—all resources to help parents tackle tough issues that girls are facing in today’s culture like identity and anxiety. What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop? Seeing the girls actively involved in leadership during their meetings. It was a joy to visit the Troop at my home church. Anything else you’d like to add? Check out the Raising Godly Girls blog at raisinggodlygirls.com and let us know at marketing@ahgonline.org if you have any topics you would like to see covered there!
