Image restoration
A
ks back, Chris Burruss, president of the Truckload Carriers e at the group’s annual conference about a strange dichots occurred regarding the trucking industry’s image in the minds of the public over the last four decades or so. “I want you to think about this for a minute. Forty years ago, we were viewed as the ‘knights of the by the public; people wore Truckers continue highway’ ‘Keep on Trucking’ T-shirts; and to fight the battle people watched movies like Convoyy and Smokey & The Banditt time and time of perception again,” he said. “And yet the image of our industry today is not what we would like it to be, nor is it what it should be,” Burruss stressed. “We’re not the ‘knights of the highway’ in the minds of people anymore, are we? Yet everything we’ve done as an industry over the last four decades should make our claim to that title even stronger.” Burruss isn’t crying over spilled milk. The ramifications of the low regard for which trucking is now held brings with it big consequences. “Keep this in mind: Public opinion drives public policy,” he warned. “In other words, how we are perceived by the public has a large impact on the laws and regulations imposed upon us.” Those are strong words. Restoring the image of trucking, though, will be a tough challenge. But it is worth the effort if the public is ever to understand the importance of the American trucker. AT

unning your trucking operation profitably isn’t rocket science. But you must be able to make haul/no haul decisions in micro-time. To make these snap decisions and compete in the freight-hauling business, the best tool to have is knowledge. The best way to gain that knowledge is through a combination of education and experience. Unfortunately, the biggest mistake many truckers make is thinking experience is their best teacher. In reality, education is the foundation. You must first learn the basics of business. This doesn’t discount the need for experience, but without the proper foundation from which to build upon, many truckers travel down the wrong road. Think of it as the difference between rolling down a freshly paved Interstate with very few obstacles in your path versus trying to maneuver your 18-wheeler down a rutted wagon trail. Just like in life, taking shortcuts in your trucking education can have the same devastating results as taking that off-road shortcut with a semi. Take the time to learn the basics; how to manage the different aspects of the industry; and to know the trucking business. The company said its “ready-to-use” sensors work on a variety of makes and models as well as with all major scan tools without special programming. Redi-Sensor “relearns” the vehicle as easily as the OE sensor—and often in less time, the company said. The scan tool relearn process is unchanged from that of OEs, Continental said. The credit, added as an amendment to the state’s Diesel Truck and Bus Rule passed in 2008, allows fleets to save up to 50% on the cost of retrofitting two vehicles or more with diesel particulate filters, but only if they meet specific requirements. CARB announced the amendments earlier this year, partly to relieve recessionaffected diesel truck fleets suffering from high compliance costs, but the qualifications for receiving the credits are complex and can require knowledgeable calculation, according to Ken Boshart, president of Boshart Engineering. “We’ve been seeing lots confusion out there,” Boshart said. “What better way to serve our fleet owners than to provide a tool that can give them a clear answer about how they can benefit from this new credit?” Boshart recommends that truckers check their eligibility first before making any decisions. www.boshartengineering.com

new filter from Luber-finer offers a “one-filter replacement solution to plastic-bowl add-on type filters” at a costeffective price, the company said. The TotalTec heavy-duty fuel filter features a “no bowl” fuel/water separator design that eliminates the work of fuel/water separation and fuel-filter maintenance. The risk of failure due to cracks and breakage is said to be reduced because the filter offers more water-absorbing efficiency and leak-proof construction. Low-cost trailer skirt
L
aydon Composites recently introduced a new lower-cost trailer side skirt. Laydon said the Hybrid TrailerSkirt is the result of a partnership with Crane Composites. Crane designed the panels and Laydon attached the panels to the trailer with its unique injection molded and patent–pending “mono clamp” and strut. This design is such that a twoperson team can mount the fairings in about an hour, said Andy Acott, Laydon sales manager. The patent-pending flexible spring struts for the side skirts are made from woven fiberglass polypropylene. Because the fiberglass strands are orientated at 0, 45, and 90 deg., the skirts are able to withstand a higher level of stress, he noted. “These skirts are inexpensive, easy and fast to install, plus are lightweight yet flexible enough to withstand everyday abuse,” Acott said. “Most importantly, they are fuel-efficient.” www.laydoncomp.com

ntensive real-world use of a trailer aerodynamic package developed by Advanced Transit Dynamics (ATDynamics) for Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT) is helping to reveal the potential monetary savings such devices can offer the trucking industry as a whole. At a news conference at the 2011 Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual meeting, ATDynamics said that 650 of MVT’s trailers equipped with its TrailerTail device saved 60,000 gals. of fuel, equal to approximately $180,000 at $3/gal., over the course of six months and 8 million mi. of operation. The fleet and the manufacturer said controlled on-road testing procedures, driver fuel log tracking, and engine fuel data were used to confirm those figures. “MVT’s experience, based on 8 million mi. of use, confirms that trailers without tails waste 5 to 6% of every gallon of diesel consumed at highway speeds,” said Andrew Smith, CEO of ATDynamics. “Extrapolated to trucking as a whole, MVT’s experience indicates the industry could save $2 billion annually in fuel costs.” Jimmy Ray, MVT executive vice president, said that the TrailerTail (Model 2011) the carrier has been testing roughly saves 0.4 of a mile per gallon for the fleet. MVT is making a host of aerodynamic changes to its trailers, he stressed, adding everything from side skirts to wheel covers, even shifting the position of the trailer’s license plate, to wring out a total of 1.2 mpg in fuel savings from its 53-ft. dry vans. “Of course, it comes down to getting our drivers to drive the truck right to achieve these fuel savings,” Ray pointed out. “However, through many changes we’ve made to our trucks and trailers, added to efforts by our drivers to operate our tractor-trailers in the most fuelefficient way, we have trucks in our fleet that are now getting 11 mpg.”

Fuel reports added to tracking solution
A
new integration of GPS vehicle tracking and fuel card reporting is now being offered by FleetMatics. The FleetMatics Fuel Card Reports software combines the company’s vehicle tracking applications with fuel-card reporting to help users reduce fuel usage, track mpg, identify fuel card non-compliance, and correct fuel-wasting driving behaviors. It will also monitor a fleet’s carbon footprint. With the reporting tool, managers receive fuel-card transaction data along with GPS location and time-stamps to accurately track transactions and consumption.
The software also tracks vehicle mpg and informs managers when a particular vehicle exceeds the company benchmark. It monitors fuelcard usage and will send notification if a card is used to fuel the wrong vehicle, if the fueling cost exceeds actual fuel capacity of the vehicle, or if the card is used at an unauthorized location. “Managers can effectively leverage their transaction information to take proactive actions that will reduce costs at the pump and benefit the environment,” said CEO Jim Travers. www.fleetmatics.com

Protecting an investment
I
ase you haven’t already noticed, I am a huge propon t of retreading. Besides the benefits to the environment and lower operating costs, the continued improved p formance of retreaded tires allows me to say—with a straight face—they can stand toe-to-toe with their new tire counterparts. Everything from improved inspection technology to advanced rubber compounds has made them more reliso it shouldn’t As more tires are able, surprise anyone there is a major getting retreaded, that shortage of truck casings. casing value rises tire Back in the days of visual inspections, most fleets were reluctant to operate trucks with retreaded tires simply because the physical appearance of a casing could be very misleading. On the outside, it looked brand new. But on the inside, the lack of inflation pressure maintenance or improper tire repair procedures could have initiated problems that were emergency road service calls waiting to happen. A lot has changed since then and as a result, most fleets in North America have some form of a retreaded tire program. Whether they retread their own tires or turn in the casings for credit, there is tremendous value in preserving a second or third life for every tubeless radial truck tire. Since the performance and cost-permile benefits are measurable in most instances, even the most bottom line managers and old-school drivers must admit that today’s retread is better than ever. Unfortunately, the combination of improved technology and recent events overseas has all but dried up the casing market. Before they purchased Bandag, Bridgestone did not put a lot of emphasis on the benefits I
16 American Trucker/ er/April 2011
of retreading back in Japan, so there was a steady supply of high-quality imported casings that domestic retreaders could rely on. However, the company opened a tread rubber manufacturing plant in Thailand last November that can supply the growing markets in Japan, China and Asia. Now that the rest of the world has caught on, the market for high-quality casing imports is growing while the supply is getting significantly smaller. Notice that I qualified my previous statement with the words “high-quality.” There will always be a plentiful supply of imported casings that are readily available at an attractive price, but the retreadability still remains questionable to some degree. Major manufacturers are a known commodity in the casing business, so a container full of virgin casings with names like Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear is as close to a sure thing as you’ll get. On the other hand, if you’ve never heard of the manufacturer, there may be a good reason to question the retreadability of the casing. Radial truck tire casings have never been more valuable, so fleets must take every step to preserve these important assets. Everything from regular inflation pressure maintenance to proper tire repair will have a positive impact on their value and performance, which means the lifecycle costs associated with neglecting truck tires will add up quickly. It is said that more than half of the cost of manufacturing a truck tire goes into building the casing, which means in theory the casing value should be about half the price of a new tire. While we haven’t reached the stage where casing prices reflect their true value, I believe that day may come sooner than we think so fleets should be prepared. AT

Th e batteries for any number of onboard systems, b dless of what is powered, longevity and cost must be factored into the buying decision. “[Our heavy-duty] customers are asking for more power from their batteries to operate the increasing number of electrical/electronic components for comfort and enjoyment,” says Greg Shull, marketing manager for Interstate Batteries. “We have designed our 31-ECL (extreme cycle life) and 31-MHD to exceed the TMC high-cycle performance standards. The TMC high-cycle standard is 300 cycles, and our ECL performs to more than 500 cycles.” Brad Bisaillon, North American sales & marketing manager for Trojan Battery Co., says onboard electronic control modules “integrated into new truck designs required for DPF and SCR or EGR control systems, and the expansion of anti-idling laws across the nation,” are increasing the power needs of customers. In response to these heavier demands, some truckers have gone to AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries made of very fine fiber boron-silicate glass between the plates. These batteries won’t leak acid upon breaking, and can take more abuse than gelled batteries, but they also need special charging applications. “With the various battery technologies available in today’s marketplace, batteries have become ‘applicationspecific,” Bisaillon explains. Trojan Battery offers two application-specific Group 31 AGM batteries to meet the diverse needs of the heavy-duty trucking market. The TransPower ST1000 is an AGM 31 heavy-duty starting battery that provides cranking power of 1,000 CCA. The battery is constructed using a thicker plate design with high-density paste and a thick wire grid design to “deliver nearly double the battery life of a standard flooded starting battery,” Bisaillon says, adding that it comes with a 36-month full replacement warranty. Using a liftgate or running an electric APU can use up to 80% of a battery’s capacity. To stand up to this, “the Trojan OverDrive AGM 31 is designed with a plate construction thicker than that used in a starting and dual-purpose battery,” he adds. “The thicker section of active materials

makes the plate more resistant to the stresses encountered during deep discharge cycling.” Allan Hillyer, director of heavy-duty on-road segment for Exide Technologies, says his company’s customers are asking how batteries can provide longer lasting power. To meet these needs, Exide offers a full line of heavy-duty batteries for Class 8 trucks ranging from conventional power, high-CCA starting types to flooded high cycling and premium AGM batteries. “In our flooded line, we introduced the Extreme Cycler 200, which provides a 50% improvement in cycling performance and three times better vibration protection versus a conventionally built battery,” he points out. “Our Roadforce AGM 200 provides a 200% improvement in cycling, 14 times better vibration protection, 40% greater charge acceptance, and 60% longer shelf life versus a conventionally built product.” Odyssey batteries, manufactured by EnerSys, are designed to provide high cranking power and deep cycle reserve power. The flat plates of the batteries are made with lead alloy. The company says this allows the plates to be made thinner, thereby fitting more of them in the battery. Avoiding churn
Open communication fosters an environment of trust and loyalty
T
he word is out. Finding quality truck drivers who are a match for your trucking operation is becoming more difficult than ever before. With some industry pundits predicting a driver shortage this year and beyond of at least 200,000, a more definitive recruiting, interviewing and evaluation method will be required so you don’t let quality truckers slip through the cracks. As a lean and nimble small motor carrier, it would seem as if you’re at a distinct disadvantage in attracting drivers. You’re not self-insured, meaning your insurance carrier dictates a lot of the criteria used to find drivers. You have to hire drivers with at least two years of OTR experience. And to top it all off, you don’t have the multiple sources of revenue

to cover the cost of driver turnover. You need alternatives. Driver turnover usually occurs within the first year of employment. A company may have an overall turnover rate of 60%, but the ‘newbie flight’ (those first-year hires) can far exceed that—as much as 180% to 240% plus. We’ll define this as driver “churning,” i.e., drivers leaving one carrier and being hired by another. As with most problems, the cause is fairly easy to find; believe it or not, it’s not just about the money. Although several factors contribute to driver churning, its root cause is a lack of communication from the very beginning. It’s making sure both trucker and carrier

understand each other’s needs and wants, and how this is going to be accomplished within the business relationship. Communication must begin during the recruiting process and continue the entire time the driver is a part of your company. The biggest complaint drivers have about the recruiting process is they aren’t told the truth about what they’re getting themselves into with a particular carrier. The three needs that drivers want filled by their employer are : ◗ Reasonable compensation for all hours required to perform the duties of driving, loading and unloading a truck. ◗ Consistency in pay from week to week. ◗ Scheduled time home. But the most important task you

ver the past several years, truckers have been fighting to get through the freight slump brought on by the Great Recession and then a sluggish recovery. This has meant that truckers are now keeping trucks longer, putting a financial bull’seye on maintenance costs.

There is another concern as well: How long should you keep that tractor in operation? Experts all agree on one thing: There is no new way to extend onroad tractor life or how to determine when it is high time to stop putting money into a truck and trade it out while it still has residual value. They suggest that using the traditional tools of maintenance management must be wielded. Knowing each truck’s operating costs and its other financial variables, chiefly depreciation and residual value, as well as understanding whether truck-market conditions such as credit availability, will determine whether a given truck should be kept longer or traded out for a

newer used model. “Very few fleets will wager maintenance costs versus acquisition costs,” says Darry Stuart, owner of Wrentham, MA-based DWS Fleet Management Services, which offers fleets consultancy. “And the cost of general maintenance will not make the decision as easy as one might like to think. The exception is when you are on the cusp of having to replace the tires, drums and wheels again on a linehaul tractor. If you have to replace those and have not budgeted for it, you will be spending $2,000 to $4,500 that was not planned for. And if the fleet itself cannot generate enough quality casings [for retreading] and has to buy new tires, the cost will rise to $5,500.”

Stuart advises to weigh vehicle “acquisition costs and the lower residual value for an older truck” when deciding whether to extend the life of your current tractor.
RISING COSTS
Complicating the matter is the cost of used vehicles. As the economy took its toll on new-truck production and large fleets’ trading cycles, the cost of quality, late-model used trucks started to climb. “Used values have been holding on a typical on-highway tractor, meaning those with normal miles and condition,” explains Terry William, editor of Penton Media’s Truck Blue Book. “This could be in part because the inventory of latemodel tractors has simply been depleted. Low miles will continue to bring a high value.” On the other hand, he points out that “tractors older than 2006 seem to now be inching up in value as buyers are finding the ‘diamond in the rough’ with lower than typical miles—‘typical’ being 125,000150,000 per year—and above-av-

erage condition for the age. I will say it still is not uncommon for me to see a $15,000 [price] range in value for a ‘like’ truck in the same model year as reported by two different dealers.” Bruce Stockton, formerly vice president of maintenance & asset management for Con-way Truckload and now president of Stockton
Solutions, says that he’s seeing the same upward mobility in prices for used trucks. “The truck that sold a year ago with 600,000 mi. on it and now has 750,000 mi. on it is bringing the same price,” he says, while buyers are learning that the new norm is a fleet truck for sale with 600,000 to 650,000 mi. on it. But it is a tractor

Following good maintenance practices, regardless of the vehicle’s age, remains the best approach to keeping your truck on the road. “For the most part,” Stockton contends, “any fleet—large or small—that follows industry best practices for maintenance and continues to do so will be fine [running trucks longer] even to the point of no return. That’s reached when you begin pouring money into essentially rebuilding trucks instead of investing capital in new equipment.” Stockton says the key is to “inspect everything on the truck and then make the decision on whether to trade it or put more maintenance dollars into it.” It can cost a fleet from $10,000 to $20,000 in maintenance costs to run a truck another six months to one year versus putting that money toward buying a new truck that will have lower maintenance costs. Whereas traditionally, used tractors were “judged by their mileage and maintenance records, now buyers are also asking when was the last time the DPF was cleaned, how clean did it get, and how many more miles to the next cleaning... [The wrong answers] can cause a $5,000 deduct from the sale price,” Stockton says. cover story concur on what are the most important aspects of maintaining trucks to last and ensuring some residual value. They call for truckers to have an industry-best preventive maintenance program in place, to follow those PMs religiously, and to not be penny-wise and dollar-foolish by using what are termed “will-fit” parts instead of OE replacement parts. They also agree that the last point is crucial not only to providing greater durability but also to ensure, in many cases, that vehicle operating safety is not compromised as well.
STAY GENUINE
“Whether maximizing the life of older trucks or not, we always recommend that fleets use genuine OE replacement parts,” says Gary Ganaway, director of marketing & global development for Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC. “I know it may sound like a supplier ‘plug,’ but OE products are held to a much higher standard for durability and safety performance. “A fleet that opts for an alternative to OE parts to pay less upfront will find those will-fit parts will be made of inferior materials that will negatively impact both durability and safety,” he continues. “We find this is especially so with brake shoes and chambers.” Ganaway says the difference between OE and will-fit parts is beyond speculation when Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) that apply to new vehicles are considered. “The FMVSS standard for brakes is very stringent and on top of that, our industry is fortified by people who take great care about safety and are very conservative about meeting that standard. “But once a new truck is in service, the FMVSS does not apply to its replacement parts,” he points out. “Will-fit brake parts for their
28 American Trucker/ er/April 2011
lower price may deliver a compromise in stopping power, product life and how well they affect the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) felt by drivers. But our OE parts meet the same FMVSS standard.” John Hinesley, director of central region, says ArvinMeritor “always recommends OE parts—especially for anything going into the brake system. There are many non-OE products out there, but we design ours with great specificity and allow no compromises from linings to spring kits.” Hinesley relates that he’s seeing “more fleets now using new brake drums rather than turning
them—as each time a drum is turned, you take away some of its heat-dispersing ability by removing metal. These fleets tell us they are replacing the drums instead because they want to ensure they’re giving drivers optimum stopping performance.” Turning to larger components, he advises that replacing worn-out OE units with a component remanufactured by a major supplier “will give the fleet more warranty coverage and a solid feeling knowing it was reman’d back to original specs versus using one from a local rebuilder who may have looser standards.” AT
It’s all about PMs Ultimately, to give your truck its best chance at a long life, and your pocketbook its best chance at financial sanity, you need to have a preventive maintenance (PM) program. The Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), part of the American Trucking Assns. (ATA), is a good place to start when looking for best practices for maintenance. TMC offers industry reference guides that outline what best practices you should follow and provides access to information that can be useful for members. Websites can also be a good resource for ideas on how to maintain your vehicles. For instance, SelecTrucks, the used-truck retailer that is part of Daimler Trucks Remarketing Corp. (DTR), lists a number of tips on its site that owners can follow to ensure their truck remains in top running condition. First, the company suggests routine checks of the vehicle. Conduct regular preventive maintenance and don’t be afraid to consult a professional mechanic. In fact, when it comes to equipment repairs, SelecTrucks advises that you trust a mechanic before listening to hearsey from other drivers. Also, keep maintenance records up-to-date and with the vehicle. These will help determine preventive maintenance intervals as well as when to conduct lubrication and fluid level checks. Adjust the PM schedules based on factors unique to your situation: how many miles you drive, wear and tear on the truck, how fast you drive, and what types of conditions (i.e. highway versus city) you generally drive in. All of these factors contribute to the PM schedule. According to SelecTrucks, most maintenance manuals will have a list of schedules to help you identify the proper timing for your own PM. “When conscientiously followed, the PM can anticipate, identify and solve potential problems that can harm your truck and business,” the website advises. “Procedures can be as simple as checking the engine oil and tire air pressure frequently, or more sophisticated, such as using engine oil analysis to extend the drain intervals. Most owner-operators perform some maintenance activity. As you gain experience, you will become more capable of performing tasks yourself.” A mechanic need not be involved in every aspect of a good PM. Items such as tires, engine oil, wipers, lights, filters, coolant, and belts/hoses can all be checked by nearly anyone. A trusted mechanic should check items such as brakes, drive axles, wheel seals, transmission, batteries, exhaust, driveline, suspension, steering, clutch and engine.

an 65 years hauling bulk n materials to job sites, s Supply & Transit Co. has mastered what it takes to operate efficiently, productively and safely. Headquartered in Portersville, PA, McClymonds fields a fleet of more than 300 trucks, including tri-axle dumps and tractors with dump and specialty trailers. The common and contract bulk building materials carrier serves customers in a 300-mi. radius in western Pennsylvania. “We understand that the fundamental success of our company starts with our drivers,” says Mark McClymonds, president. “Over the years, we have been very selective in our hiring process. This has had a positive effect on all aspects of the company. In any normal year we only hire about 5 to 10% of the drivers who apply for jobs with our company. “At the same time,” McClymonds continues, “our driver turnover rate has never been more than 10% per year. As a company, we are very proud of the fact that we still employ drivers who have been with our company since the 1960s. We feel that says a lot about who we are.” Frank Zbuckvich, safety director, explains the stringent requirements that McClymonds has for drivers. “We require a minimum of two years

experience and won’t even consider an applicant who has more than two speeding or one serious violation within the past 10 years,” he says. “We only hire drivers that we are comfortable with as the face of the company.”
A FULL CHECK McClymonds conducts complete background checks on all driver applicants, including full license histories, criminal backgrounds and references with previous employers. After meeting the company’s rigorous requirements, new hires at McClymonds must also get passing grades on the job. Following a full day of training on safety and company policies, new drivers are paired with driver trainers for about one week. During that time, they are graded on pre- and post-trip inspection and equipment operating procedures, as well as customer relations. Following that period, they spend a few more weeks on the road with an experienced driver. All 325 drivers attend quarterly meetings covering safety and equipment. There are also safety awards for drivers who have not had any lost time, or a preventable accident causing $750 or more in damage. McClymonds is especially interested in safety technology. “All of our

new tractors are specified with traction and stability control systems,” McClymonds states, “and we’ve added Bendix air disc brakes to our latest specs because testing has shown that they can reduce stopping distances significantly.” Another new specification at the company is bringing EPA-certified SCR engines into the fleet. About 90% of the trucks and tractors in the McClymonds fleet are Peterbilt models, and in June of last year the company took delivery of the first 2010 Paccar MX production engine in a Peterbilt 386, a 13L 445-hp. model. “Our company has run millions of miles with Peterbilts, and we are extremely happy to [have been] the first customer to receive a Paccar MX engine,” McClymonds says. “We haven’t had any problems with the engine and don’t expect any fuel-efficiency or performance issues. “Ever since my late father, George R. McClymonds, bought his first truck in 1945, we’ve strived to provide our customers with the best service possible,” McClymonds says. “We have been fortunate that our customer base has grown over the years, and we feel that is due to the dedication of our employees and the ability to provide them with the latest and safest equipment the industry has to offer.”
