Dealing with crisis

I

It’s been a tough stretch for anyone in the trucking industry these last few years. Kyle Treadway, president of Kenworth Sales Co. in Salt Lake City, UT, who also serves as chairman of the American Truck Dealers (ATD), took note of the state of affairs at ATD’s recent convention. “[We’re] challenged by a host of serious issues, none more important than the devalued used-truck market,” Treadway said at this year’s conference. “Commercial lenders Trucking has seen its have been reluctant to put marginal customers out of business for fear share of hard times, of being saddled with more reposused trucks.” but always survives. sessed Treadway also noted that lack of available credit looms large, leaving dealers with access to fewer lenders—lenders that are also fighting for survival. Treadway pointed out only 123 dealerships, or about 4%, of the national network were forced to close in 2009 despite a 50% drop in medium- and heavy-duty truck sales since 2006. Still, many hardships face truckers, he said, noting that more than 4,000 fleets are in bankruptcy. Yet he reminded me in a conversation earlier this year that tough times are not something new to trucking. Overcoming tough times is something innate to veteran truckers and dealers alike. Kyle himself represents the third generation of his family to run three dealership groups in seven Western states. “This is a cyclical industry and always has been,” he told me. “Now, the current valley may be the deepest we’ve ever experienced, but nevertheless, it’s another cycle all the same. We’ve been here before.” AT

Saving the life of a tractor

The final answer

I

T

he extensive rebuilding of highway tractors to extend their useful life is once again in the news— for the first time in some 30 years. Just as the last time the practice gained attention, it’s the state of over-the-road trucking that’s driving the action. Back then it was the double-whammy of the 1980-81 recession and trucking deregulation, signed into law in 1980, that led many traditional LTL carriers to overhaul their tractors. In some cases, the overhaul went as far as completely rebuilding linehaul tractors—everything from the engine to the cab. Now, many long-haul carriers are fighting to get through today’s freight slump while at the same time seeking to avoid buying new trucks that are much more expensive—thanks to EPA 2010 emissions rules—for as long as possible. Navistar’s “ReStar” program aims to take a late-model, low-mileage truck from a customer and then refurbish it thoroughly enough that the fleet can get more use out of it, presumably without driving up maintenance costs. At the same time, the fleet can avoid selling the vehicle at today’s depressed used-truck values.

CREATING OPTIONS “We understand in this tough economic time that buying a new truck often is not an option,” said Jim Hebe, Navistar’s senior vp-North American operations. He noted

6 American Trucker/ r/June 2010

Navistar’s ReStar program can cut two years off the life of a tractor. that by Navistar’s calculations, the base cost of a new truck due to emissions regulations has jumped by $27,000 since 2002. “We are offering ReStar so fleets can extend the life of an International or any other OEM truck model.” Hebe said the ReStar process makes sense for fleets whose vehicles don’t require major overhauls. Focus is on upgrading electrical components, HVAC systems, clutches, drivelines and brakes. Avoiding an engine rebuild, Hebe said, means fleets commit to between $5,000 and $20,000 at most to take a typical three-year-old truck and, in effect, reset its lifespan clock back two years. Navistar’s ReStar specialists as well as fleet owners carefully pick the trucks for refurbishment to stay within those cost parameters, he pointed out. “The return for the fleet is a likenew vehicle that avoids the 12% excise tax on a new truck and also keeps depreciation around 10 to 13 cents a mile,” Hebe added. —DAVID CULLEN

n order to operate any company profitably, managers must know their costs. It is no different when it comes to a trucking operation. A carrier must know what its per-day fixed costs on each piece of equipment and its specific operational and fuel per mile costs are in order to ensure success. First, you must know your costs; second, exercise control over those costs; third, understand the dynamics of the lanes in which your trucks run and become the expert on those lanes for your customers; and fourth, know the supply and demand of loads to available trucks in those lanes. Once you have all of this information, you can develop a hauling rate range so you can pick and choose the best paying loads for your operation. Keep in mind that any carrier who runs on a static per-mile freight rate will eventually fail. The only way a trucker can give a shipper a per-mile rate is if time and the total odometer distance on a specific load is factored into the equation. Also consider the actual length of time to complete the load, from pickup to delivery. Hauling rate per mile is the final answer, not the point where you begin. Cool power

Decisiv unveils service platform

D

T

ometic Group has added a low-power bunk cooler to its line of battery-powered auxiliary air conditioning products. The SP-900 is powered by a 12volt Danfoss compressor, producing a capacity of 3,100 Btu/hr. to cool the cab. It is a split system consisting of a condensing unit that mounts on the rear of the cab and an evaporator that mounts above the bunk or seat. The units are connected by precharged refrigerant line sets. Airflow is controlled by four separate air vents that can be adjusted. A digital thermostat and keypad allow for driver control. The Dometic system runs on power taken directly from the battery bank, so it doesn’t require an inverter. A low-voltage sensor and automatic shut-off circuit ensure the system will not deplete the truck’s batteries. Dometic also has released a superslim refrigerator/freezer and a supersized refrigerator for commercial utility vans. The CDF-11 super-slim refrigerator/freezer unit is “one of the smallest compressor-powered combination units ever to appear on the market,” said Lou Siegel, senior vp of Dometic’s trucking business unit. Measuring just 9¼ in. wide and 14

An adjustable digital thermostat can be set for cooling or freezing with a temperature range of 0 to 50 deg. F. It runs on a 12-volt power supply and draws about 3.75 amps. The super-sized refrigerator boasts a full 29 cu. ft. of interior capacity, measuring 43 in. wide, 55 in. deep and 39 in. high. It is designed to slide into the rear of commercial utility vans, or can be mounted on the bed of a pickup. The refrigerator can run up to eight hours on its built-in battery without being connected to a power supply. It runs on 12-volt DC or 115-volt AC power and includes a 12-volt compressor. www.dometic.com

Trail King unveils modular trailer

Li-ion battery increases run time

A

T

railer maker Trail King has unveiled a new modular hydraulic transport trailer (MHTS), a six-line, 375,000-lb.-capacity, off-road transport system. The trailer’s air system is one of its unique features. The system includes drain fittings on each tank and an air dryer. The tanks are easily accessible, promoting easy maintenance access. The stirrups and side plate design are engineered to be compatible for use with existing brands of line trailers. Also, the steering arms of the MHTS are positioned over “dished” cross members so that they are more easily accessible for repositioning or replacement. The steering arm mounting bosses are raised, not recessed, to help prevent a buildup of dirt and grime. A 20-hp., water-cooled diesel self-contained unit powers the hydraulic systems, which includes steel hydraulic lines throughout.

The trailer has a 375,000-lb. capacity. The externally mounted hydraulic reservoir allows up to 20 lines. There is a self-locating tow bar with special notches in the tow bar plate that align with the tops of the stirrups for perfect alignment. It is locked in place with an air-activated locking system. Other features and standard equipment include a 55 deg. maximum steering angle; a hydraulic stirrup pin for easy connect/disconnect to other lines; clearance lights; and brackets for strobe lights, flags, and wide load signs. www.trailking.com

Portable workstation S

nap-on says its new portable workstation offers technicians the strength of a stationary workstation in the portability of a shop cart. The workstation includes a large 38x26-in. stainless steel work surface, which holds over 1,000 lbs, and has raised edges to keep objects on the top surface. It also includes two 30¼x24-in. drawers, one 6 in. deep and one 4 in.

10 American Trucker/ r/June 2010

“Snap-on’s workstation is a must-have if you want to improve your productivity in the heavy-duty workplace,” said Jay Serpe, product manager. “The biggest challenges of heavy-duty repair work are actually getting the tools to the job and then having a strong work surface to stage heavyduty components.” www.snapon.com

Air hose assembly cuts repair time

P

hillips Industries’ 3 n’ 1 electrical and air hose assembly with quick connect plug (QCP) can cut field repairs of electrical cables to just seconds. Using the QCP cartridge, a technician can quickly and easily swap out a damaged electrical cable. The top reason for electrical cord failures is pin push-out in the plug end, Phillips said. Unwrapping the spiral wrap that is used to organize and combine assemblies is time consuming. The 3 n’ 1 electrical and air hose is designed to cut that time. The assembly includes large grips for coupling and uncoupling leverage, swivel end brass fittings, kink and abrasion resistance and a hanging clip for easy installation. www.phillipsind.com

Boot the thumper

ou have purchased a new car in the last few years, I pe you noticed the yellow horseshoe light with the lamation point that lights up on the dashboard during the bulb check. This indicator informs the driver that the vehicle has a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that is designed to signal when any tire (or combination of tires) is 25% below the inflation pressure listed on the It’s an early The best pressure placard. warning sign alertthe driver that a check remains an ing tire is losing air and has crossed the danair gauge. gerous threshold towards imminent failure so immediate attention is necessary. The trucking industry has talked about TPMS for years, and I have written several columns encouraging fleets to explore the potential savings that accompanies it. There’s no question that TPMS has benefits, but I’m also sensitive to the fact that margins in trucking are razor thin right now so the capital investment necessary to implement TPMS is restrictive for most fleets. The good news is that every fleet has a TPMS system that is almost foolproof—the driver. Drivers are required to perform a pre-trip and post-trip inspection that includes the tires. In fact, according to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Regulation 393.75 (h) Tire Inflation Pressure (1), “No motor vehicle shall be operated on a tire which has a cold inflation pressure less than that specified for the load being carried.” There are two ways to check the inflation pressure in a truck tire. The first, and preferred method, is to place a calibrated air gauge on the end of the valve stem so the pressure can be read on the dial, readout or stick. The

18 American Trucker/ r/June 2010

second is to use the old boot-o-meter, or the infamous tire thumper. I’ve done plenty of fleet maintenance seminars where I inflated four truck tires to different pressures and then asked drivers and technicians to find the flat without an air gauge. Some of them even went to retrieve their own tire thumpers. While I’ve never kept statistics, the majority of the students could not find a tire that was 5 or 10 psi below the other tires without an air gauge. To further demonstrate my point, I would ask the students to guess the actual inflation pressures that often produced pressure ranges of 20 to 40 psi. Checking the inflation pressure of a tire with a boot or tire thumper is like checking the oil by putting a hand on the hood of an idling truck. It may find the obvious flat, but it will not consistently locate the tires that are below operating pressure. In fact, if all eight tires on a trailer were inflated to the same air pressure at some point in time and then never checked or inflated again, the tire thumper method will probably make the driver think the tires are properly inflated for years because there won’t be much difference in the sound that the thumper makes when it hits the tires. If the TPMS behind the wheel follows the federal regulations for inspecting truck tires as part of the inspections, an inflation gauge will be used on every tire before and after every trip. And while fleets should spend the extra money for inflate-through valve caps to make it easier, the driver is still required by law to make sure the pressure is sufficient for the load with something a little more reliable than a wood baton or sawed-off baseball bat. ders, like their customers, have d well by hard economic times. ead suppliers are not only oftinually improving products, but also new levels of tire management support to help fleets realize maximum benefit from their tire investments. “Yesterday’s business model focused only on the product,” says Jay Hofner, general manager, Commercial Retread for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. “The tough economic times of the past 18 months have made it more important than ever for businesses to do the right things—the things we always said we should be doing all along.” For retreaders, one of those things is to help customers understand what is really happening with their new tires and retreads in order to maximize the total miles of operation from each new tire and its retreading, while minimizing lifecycle costs. If a carrier is having more tire-related breakdowns in one part of the country, for example, Goodyear can make that problem visible to fleets and then help them pinpoint the causes and remedies. At Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions, tire management has also become a part of the retread package for many customers. “We go all the way from just selling a tire to helping fleets drive better metrics—improving the factors they use to measure success,” says Tom Trego, channel manager, distribution for Bridgestone Bandag. “When you get away from using just new tires, you need to understand why tires are leaving your fleet.”

Lifecycle management now an option

BUILDING BLOCKS Like building a house on a poor foundation, if a retreader is working with a sub-par product, there is only so much that can be done at retread time. “If you are going to be a solid retreader, you need to buy a premium new product with premium casings up front,” Trego says. “Then you can track the effects of things like maintenance practices, tire inflation and the performance of tires to reduce total lifecycle costs.”

“Fleet customers continue to search for ways to reduce costs and maximize the life of their retreads,” notes Tom Brennan, vp of Michelin Retread Technologies. “They want help with tracking and managing assets, with the goal of keeping the tires on their trucks as long as possible. In addition, more detailed and in-depth reporting helps fleets manage resources and reduce costs.” While retread suppliers have been focusing on providing fleets more timely, actionable information, the quality and variety of retread offerings likewise continues to improve. There are retreads optimized for fuel efficiency from all the major suppliers, such as the Fuel Max line from Goodyear, as well as applicationspecific retreads like the BDY2 for severe-service duty from Bandag or the X One XTE tread for trailer axles from Michelin. There are value-priced retreads and premium retreads, too. Marangoni Tread NA and Goodyear, for example, each offer a “splice-less” premium retread designed to deliver longer, more even tread life and other benefits. Goodyear’s seamless Unicircle retreads adhere better to the casing, according to the company, creating a tighter fit that helps to improve traction and reduce tread tearing and chunking in severe conditions. It also makes the tires easier to balance.

Swap, fix TRUCK BODIES:

or sell

How to make the right truck-and-body decision

I

t’s always a challenge to profitably operate a specialized truck—anything that isn’t fitted with a van body or a flatbed— and no ownership question is more vexing than what to do when the truck chassis and cab supporting a rig needs work, if not outright replacement. When that’s the case, owners can swap out the body by reinstalling it on another truck, purchased either new or used. Or the case could be made for fixing what’s broken on the truck and/or body and making other improvements as needed to keep the whole unit in service longer. The final choice would be to sell the truck and body off and start fresh with some combination of new or used truck and body. The second big question that may come up for owners—and it comes up less often as bodies tend to outlast chassis by quite a stretch—is what to do when the specialized body only needs to be retired. In this scenario, the choice comes down to looking for another new or used body of the same type to swap onto your chassis or to start out fresh with another truck and body. Taken together, all the options for both scenarios really boil down to just three choices: ◗ Swap a body onto another new or used chassis. ◗ Fix/repair/improve the body and chassis separately or jointly. ◗ Sell off the chassis and/or the body and start over with new or used equipment.

SECOND LIFE “Every case when it comes to truck bodies is different, but know this: you can run equipment—both trucks and bodies—a lot longer than most people in trucking like to admit,” contends management consultant Darry Stuart, president of DWS Fleet Management. “It’s absolutely an option to make repairs to a truck

Go to

body and keep it for a ‘second life,’ either placing it on a new or used truck chassis. It depends on what the body is, though. For example, there’s more likely success doing this with a dry van than a [more complex] refrigerated van body.” Stuart says that when it comes to selecting a chassis for a body’s second life, the “best used chassis is the one it’s already mounted on. You should already know the maintenance history and what’s been done to it; and you don’t always know that information when buying a used truck on the market. If you do decide to stay with your current chassis, you can do a reasonably inexpensive in-frame overall, rebuilding the chassis and the engine to gain more service life from it.” On the other hand, he advises being aware that “in many cases the truck and body are worth more in combination at resale than they would be separately. Buyers tend to look for a complete unit on the used market, not separate pieces.” According to Stuart, a new truck chassis is “certainly cheaper from a maintenance cost perspective, but if you calculate depreciation and maintenance costs together, then the used truck often is the cheaper option. But whether that will be the case for a given buyer will depend on how hard they push their trucks. “Remember, at the end of the day, it’s typically the body that sells the truck,” he continues. “And bear in mind the weakest link of any body is its floor.” He concedes that advice does depend on the truck’s service application. “Most straight [van] truck bodies not seeing a lot of forklift traffic hold up better,” Stuart points out. “In the case of dump truck bodies, you’re really not looking to separate them from the chassis. The idea here should be to view these kinds of trucks as combinations—body and chassis together as a single unit— and then seek to run them as long as

possible, ten years or more, and after that, sell off the combined unit. “People tend to complicate things in the trucking industry,” he continues. “Just keep it simple. Look at the wear and tear on the body, examine the chassis, and look at depreciation and maintenance costs together. Weighing all those factors will ultimately dictate whether you should keep and repair the body or swap the body with another chassis, or just sell the combined unit and start over with a new one.”

SEARCH MODE Be it new or used, buying a specialized truck body is, well, a specialized task. More than likely, a buyer in this part of the market may turn first to wherever his last body purchase was made or widen the search by contacting local retailers of used or new trucks before going afield by scouring print or online ads. But when it comes to buying a chassis, the market is wide open, regardless of whether one prefers going for a new or used truck. However, “body builders ” (distributors/ installers) are reporting right now that they are seeing a steadily rising trend of more used trucks coming into their shops to be outfitted with existing or new/used specialized bodies, especially for municipal service contract work. They attribute this uptick to two current factors. First, some buyers who typically buy “new” cannot now get new trucks fast enough to fulfill contracts so they are opting instead for ‘good’ used trucks—having a new or used body put on them to add to their fleet. Other usually new-truck buyers are very price-sensitive this year due to the economy and so are choosing to go with used trucks to avoid the higher sticker prices of new EPA 2010-compliant trucks. According to Bob Johnson, director of fleet relations for the National Truck Equipment Assn. (NTEA), “in some cases, it is difficult to obtain a

American Trucker/ r/June 2010 25

cover story new truck at this time in a timely fashion due to reduced dealer inventories and lower production volumes on the part of the truck OEMs. Once a user has obtained a chassis [new or used] they are often faced with the requirement to upfit [install a body on it] the unit before it can be productive.

USED ANGLE “Installing an available used body, or modifying the body already on the chassis for a specific need seems like a good way to save money,” Johnson continues. He says the used-body buyer must consider a number of issues: 1. How much labor will be required to adapt the used body to a chassis that it was not designed to fit on? 2. Does the used body really meet the user’s current requirements? 3. What is the condition of the used body (finish, rust, wear items, etc.)? 4. If the used body is to be taken off another truck, how will that impact the resale value of that unit? “In many cases labor represents a greater portion of the overall cost of a body than the actual body itself,” he points out. “If a used body needs a lot of repairs, refinishing and modifications to meet the user’s needs, it may actually be more cost-effective in the long run to purchase a new body even for a used chassis.” And Johnson does not see the current high pressure on used-truck availability letting up right away. “The trend to purchase used chassis at this time include the significant increases in chassis costs for both 2007 and 2010 EPA-compliant diesel-powered chassis and of course the economic pressures to hold down expenditures, or in many cases adhere to no increases or to very restricted capital budgets. “On top of that, many of the

If a body is in good shape, it can be swapped onto a new or used chassis. current government contract [construction] jobs coming on line are one-time projects, and contractors are hesitant to invest in new equipment that they may have no need for once the current rush of work is completed,” he adds. “I feel that this conservative approach to new equipment purchases will probably last at least into mid2011,” he says, “and possibly longer depending on how the overall economy recovers. In the interim, you will also see contractors, utilities and government fleets expanding the life of their equipment through rebuilding campaigns or just making more extensive repairs than what would normally be considered cost-effective for their operations.” If you decide to elbow your way into the used market, Johnson suggests considering auctions. “Probably one of the best ways to obtain used equipment at this time is to stay on the lookout for equipment auc-

“An unfortunate fact of life at this time is that many contractors— especially small companies with limited reserves—are going out of business, and a buyer may be able to pick up relatively good used equipment for a reasonable price. Also, be on the lookout for new chassis of the previous model year sitting on truck dealer lots. Dealers may be willing to make a good offer on these units to get them off of their lot. Johnson says the “availability of used bodies that are not already mounted on a chassis is much more limited. In some cases, it may be worth buying a used truck with the body you need mounted on it. If the body is in reasonable condition, you may be able to recondition it and transfer it to another chassis at a reasonable cost and then resell the old chassis without body at a bargain price to recover some of your transfer costs.” He advises that if body transfer work is done, “it is important that the user pay close attention to FMVSS criteria for ‘upfitted’ trucks and to make sure that the vehicle they ‘create’ is in compliance. Otherwise they may be creating a liability

The value of Styrofoam Environmentally unfriendly product is making P&R’s fleet a little greener

B

B to the environment and the bottom line simultaneously is no easy task, as any fleet will tell you. But achieving this twin goal with trucks is pretty straightforward and well known to most fleets. If the goods you are hauling aren’t green, though, what’s a fleet to do? This issue became critical for P&R Paper Supply Co., which sells a full line of paper products, retail packaging, chemicals, janitorial supplies, and food service items. Family-owned and operated since 1965, Redlands, CA-based P&R serves southern California, Arizona and Nevada with over 5,000 items in stock, offering what it calls a “big company experience” with small company comfort and service with its 130 employees. One of the most in-demand product lines is Styrofoam trays and other containers; however, the product is considered bad for the environment. Yet more earthfriendly replacements cost two to three times more than Styrofoam equivalents—a cost not easily absorbed by the prisons, hospitals and school cafeterias that are some of P&R’s biggest customers. What to do? P&R joined forces with three of its major suppliers— Dart, Genpak and Pactiv—to help create a special Styrofoam recycling

30 American Trucker/ r/June 2010

plan. Dart constructed a plant that would take old Styrofoam containers and process them into blocks of plastic. These are then sold to various plastic manufacturers that turn them into goods such as picture frames. This alleviates customer concerns over using lower-cost yet environmentally unfriendly products. But how would those used materials get to the recycling facility? That’s where P&R’s fleet came into the picture.

ONE HYBRID LATER P&R operates a fleet of 37 tractors and straight trucks via a full-service lease through Inland PacLease-Fontana, the local PacLease franchise. With support from its suppliers, P&R decided to lease a Kenworth T370 hybrid that was dedicated primarily to collecting used Styrofoam containers. This not only produced the critical transportation link for the recycling plant, it also alleviated the need for customers to haul away the waste. “Once the many Styrofoam cups, trays and containers used throughout schools, prisons and restaurants are done being used, they can be repacked in boxes and backhauled for recycling into other products,” explains Lora Chrest, assistant controller at P&R.

Go to

“We pick up those ‘dirty’ products and haul them to the recycling plant. Then we wash out and resanitize the truck so we can use it for other P&D assignments,” she says. “This is a huge deal for our customers. It’s taken off like crazy, largely because a comparable biodegradable option to the Styrofoam product line would cost them up to two to three times more.” On top of that, P&R decorated its hybrid truck with graphics on the side of the van body to call attention to its Styrofoam recycling efforts—a way to garner some public recognition for its efforts as well as encourage others to recycle. The truck itself is expected to save upwards of 30% on the fuel bill for P&R, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 40% and carbon monoxide by 90%. “We’re finding that our customers, if given a choice, want to be environmentally friendly. That goes from buying products that are biodegradable and compostable, to products that can be recycled,” Chrest says. “Now with the new hybrid, we’re excited to be entering a new chapter,” she adds. “We’re very confident that the hybrid will be a big success for our company and shed further light on our efforts in recycling.”
