More than “show”

O

ce, at least, show trucks seem to offer little in terms of e. I mean, let’s face it, profits in trucking used to be pennies but are today reduced to mere percentages of pennies. Then go beyond the bottom line to look at the harsh work environment trucks must survive in these days—rough pavement, bad weather, and rigs getting covered in dirt, grime, and corrosive icemelting chemicals. With all that in mind, not only Show trucks offer does dumping some $10,000 (or more than just “show” much, much more) into an eyepopping paint job or sheet metal to their owners. work seem highly impractical, it borders on the suicidal—from a purely business perspective, of course. Then you meet someone like Jerry Beaudoin, owner of Soil Recovery Systems (SRS) out of Southington, CT, and your thinking on the practicality of show trucks takes a 180-deg. turn. For starters, Beaudoin and his 15-member shop do all of the work on his fleet of 13 one-of-a-kind trucks—everything except the exhaust stacks. More importantly, though, Beaudoin told me SRS gets a number of contracts simply because he operates such sharply dressed steel. “You’re a rock star every day you’re behind the wheel of one of these trucks,” he told me at the 2010 Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition. “People slow down all day long to take pictures and give you a thumbs up. It’s just so cool. Where else do you get to drive something like this for work every day?” AT

chneider National is installing a new device expected to reduce the fleet’s fuel consumption by some 1.8-million gals. per year. The Deflecktor wheel cover is designed to keep wind out of the wheel wells, reducing drag and improving fuel efficiency. The improvement in aerodynamics is just about 1%, but the savings can really add up, especially when multiplied by thousands of trucks as it will be at Schneider. The carrier plans to deploy the new wheel covers across its entire fleet. “We tested the Deflecktor on about 1,500 trucks for two years,” said Bryan Gerl, fuel purchasing manager for Schneider’s long-haul operation. “It performed well and held up in all kinds of weather.” Gerl especially liked the durability of the flexible wheel cover material and the ease of installation. No tools are required to fit the covers to the wheels, and they zip open to allow drivers to complete the required pre- and posttrip inspections. Schneider also had the Deflecktors imprinted with the Schneider logo. Jon Fleck, owner of A de F Ltd., a privately held company located in St. Paul, MN, invented the covers. www.deflecktor.com

AirBat sensor swats away low pressure

S

temco has introduced a tire pressure monitoring sensor designed specifically for steer and tag axle applications. Dubbed the AirBat RF SST, the sensor is the latest addition to the Bat RF family of products. Along with the Dual Tire AirBat sensor, the AirBat RF SST joins the company’s suite of tire pressure sensors for all wheel positions. The AirBat SST provides a visual indicator on the wheel-end when tire pressure is below target, alerting the driver or technician to inspect and inflate the tire. The company’s sensor also works with existing Bat RF products, including HandBat handheld reader, DAS (Driver Alert System), gate reader, satellite interface module, and WebBat Internet-based fleet management software.

AirBat devices alert drivers when tire pressure drops too low. “Improperly inflated tires reduce tire life and can decrease fuel efficiency by as much as 3%,” said Bob Montgomery, vice president-fleet information systems for Stemco. “Low tire pressure also leads directly to premature tire failure and irregular wear, both of which can be safety hazards. Stemco’s Bat RF products provide accurate, accessible data to assist fleets in safe, productive operation and maintenance of vehicle assets.” www.stemco.com

amage to trailers hitting overhead obstacles can cost fleets thousands of dollars in repairs. But Frank Nugent, a truck driver from New York, has come up with a novel solution: the GiraffeG4 Truck Protection System. Nugent designed the system and tested it for 18 months. The Giraffe uses sound wave technology to measure the height of overhead obstacles. The unit is mounted on a mirror and a driver simply inputs the height of his vehicle.

8 American Trucker/ r/July 2010

If the driver suspects a bridge might be too low to safely drive under, he simply pulls his cab under it and waits for the Giraffe to send the accurate height back to the readout in the cab. The sensor will continue to monitor the hazard as the truck passes under. The GiraffeG4 is comprised of a driver programmable readout with LED display for the cab and a sealed sensor unit that attaches easily to an exterior mirror. The unit is waterproof. www.giraffeg4.com

Gator season arrives

I

ed to love spring. I always looked forward to watchthe trees and flowers come to life after a long, cold ter. And it would make sense that this particular ing would be even more special because my home in the Mid-Atlantic was blanketed by five feet of snow just a few months before. But I still want to take back every wish that I made for spring when I shoveled foot after foot of the fluffy white stuff. The problem is, I hate the heat. Spring Proper inflation is temperatures used to be in the high 60s doubly important and 70s with overnight lows that were during summer. perfect for sleeping with the windows open. Unfortunately, as I write this column, warmer temperatures have arrived and they will only go up as the spring warmth turns into summer heat and eventually the dog days of summer. But I’m not the only one who hates the heat. Tires love this time of year just as much as I do because they start cool and then gradually warm up before gradually cooling down. For those tires that have been neglected all winter, the warmer temperatures may also give a little boost to the inflation pressure, which increases by 1-2 psi with each additional 10 deg. F. Those same underinflated tires catch another break because the cooler temperatures mean it takes longer for them to reach the point where any excessive heat will start to break down the components and create a gator. Most of my commute to and from work involves the Interstate Highway System, and I’ve already noticed a few more gators than usual. So my neighbors are getting an early start on giving me a hard time because they know that I’m in the tire business. The guy next door

12 American Trucker/ r/July 2010

asks me every year when am I going to get retreads outlawed since they’re all over the highway. Even though I keep showing him data proving that around 90% of tire road debris is the result of underinflation, he’s convinced that retreads are the source of the gator infestation. I’ve decided to dedicate the rest of this space to explaining the life and habitat of the gator with the hope that everyone will help me change this perception. Every gator starts its life as a new tire and typically leaves the nest with the maximum air pressure. From that point forward, the habitat will determine its fate. If the tire is placed in a sanctuary where the inflation pressure is checked on a regular basis until the original tread is worn away, it will never become a gator. It quietly disappears into the scrap pile, or the casing gets retreaded until it has lived its useful life. Much like their real-life counterparts that threaten people and pets, the tires that end up in the wrong environments will eventually become gators and cause problems down the road when inflation is an afterthought. In some instances, it may take years for the abuse to culminate in a metal-twisting tread detachment; while in the most extreme conditions, it may only take an hour or two of excessive heat for the gator to appear. And if motorists were able to look closely at the tire debris on the side of the road, they would probably see a collection of passenger, light truck and truck tire gators that have the same sad story of prolonged underinflation. When the mercury rises, tires that operate with inflation pressures just a few pounds below what is required on any vehicle can become gators if they get hot enough—regardless of whether they are new, used, retreaded or repaired. That’s a fact. AT

Onboard scales

T

onboard scales by fleets is slowly growing, but hift into high gear as new regulatory focus, parSA 2010, takes hold. past, the onboard scale market consisted primarily of very weight-sensitive, heavy applications and bulk hauling,” Martin Ambros, Air-Weigh CEO, says. “With increasing regulation, the market is growing to include a broader crosssection of the industry. Maximizing payload to legal limits while eliminating wasted time check-weighing is becoming more important to many fleets.” “Where a trucking company might once have viewed our scales as a nice but perhaps unnecessary add-on, they are now recognizing that they are an effective tool in cutting costs and [managing] increasing weight regulations,” Scott McCulloch, director of communications & business development for Right Weigh, says. CSA 2010 is not the only change to the enforcement picture. Penalties associated with overweight vehicles add up for fleets. “The industry is learning the benefits of onboard scales and the real costs associated with weighing loads [to avoid] load violations,” Peter Panagapko, president of TruckWeight, a Smart Scale Technologies brand, says. The scales themselves have not seen major changes in the past year. Right Weigh has made a relatively “minor” change to its systems, although McCulloch says it addresses the ever-important issue of driver comfort. “Over the last year, we’ve upgraded our interior-mounted dash scale,” McCulloch says. “It still shows drivers real calibrated weight, only now drivers can also cycle through seven different LED backlight choices and select the best color for their [truck’s] specific dash.” The changes at Vulcan On-Board Scales are all about being wireless. The company just introduced its first wireless system for both mechanical and air-ride suspensions. The system will be available for all its models, although Rick Talbot, marketing & sales, says that fleets running straight trucks would likely still receive a hard-wired version. Talbot also says the company has made recent improvements to its accuracy readings for vehicles equipped with air-ride suspensions.

Technology isn’t just for large fleets

Go to

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

The company’s new Deflection Transducer, primarily for straight trucks, mounts on a vehicle suspension and using electronics monitors loading/unloading remotely. It is designed for use in applications with mechanical suspensions where air pressure isn’t used to monitor weight. Despite the economic climate, Air-Weigh continues to be busy, releasing several new products in the past year that have added to the depth of the options available, Ambros says. LoadMaxx is a full-feature scale offering communications, vehicle data bus interfaces, onboard computer or communications links, and a variety of configurations for vehicle and suspension types. There are also models for straight or vocational trucks with non-air suspensions. For fleets looking for a simpler version, Quickload is an option. Quickload includes all the core features found on the company’s onboard scales without the more expensive advanced integration or automatic trailer swapping features. The result is a scale that is both functional and price-competitive with air gauges, Ambros says. “The importance of these ongoing product releases is that Air-Weigh continues to bring feature-packed, affordable onboard scale technology to a wider variety of applications across the commercial transport industry,” Ambros says. The hardware itself is not the only thing changing these days. TruckWeight is offering a free beta version of its Smart Loader software, which is available on the company website. Part of a larger weight data collection and reporting system, Smart Loader generates weight data per truck and trailer or rig configuration with driver, location and commodity data options, Panagapko says. Users are able to collect data from vehicles moving in and out of a loading site, allowing for more accurate weight readings.

Tires 101 Ten things you should know before buying or selling a vehicle

BY KEVIN ROHLWING, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR 18 American Trucker/July 2010

Go to

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

W

hen the editors of American Trucker asked me to step outside my monthly column and write a “Tires 101” for people who are buying or selling a used truck or trailer, I immediately thought of a Top Ten List. After all, it’s much easier when things are ranked in order of importance so buyers and sellers know which ones they should follow and which ones are more or less optional. But then I thought it would be irresponsible to say one thing is more important than another because they are all very important from a number of different perspectives. So I’ve decided to stick with the ten items idea, but because they are all equally important, I’ve listed the items in no particular order.

Tread Depth Federal law states that the minimum tread depth on a steer axle tire is 4/32 of an inch and the minimum tread depth for every other position is 2/32 of an inch. Contrary to what some people might still believe, the “two adjacent groove” rule does not exist. Therefore, if any spot on any major groove of a steer, drive or trailer tire does not meet the minimum requirements, it will not pass a DOT inspection. This means that one wear bar worn even with the tread block on either side indicates a tire with a groove below 2/32 in. and is therefore illegal; however, the decoupling grooves, which are the narrow ribs on the outside edges of steer and trailer tires, are not considered major grooves so they are technically not subject to a tread depth measurement. That being said, it is still in a critical area of the tire. When the shoulder is worn to the point where it is no longer visible, the best practice is to remove it from service and preserve the casing. If the rubber has already started to change color in places, it’s safe to assume that the wires on the edge of the belt will be soon to follow.

Dual matching When tires are operating in a dual position, the goal is to make sure

Go to

they are both carrying the same amount of weight, especially when the tires are under maximum load. If one tire is significantly larger than the other, it will carry more weight and may end up running overloaded even if the inflation pressure is correct. And to make matters worse, the smaller tire will be spinning faster to keep up with the larger one so the constant scuffing can lead to a series of flat spots across the tread or other types of irregular wear. The general rule of thumb is to make sure that the tread depths on dual tires are within 4/32 of an inch difference since the official maximum dual matching tolerance is ¼ in. in diameter. It’s important to note that the 4/32 in. tread depth rule works best when the duals are the same type of tire with the same tread design. There are slight differences in diameter between brands and retreads, so a straight-up tread depth check on the duals of a truck with unmatched tread designs or casings is not 100% reliable. Additionally, the same rule applies to trucks with tandem drive axles. More than a 4/32 in. difference in the tread depths between the two axles may lead to drivetrain issues, particularly if the front wheels are regularly engaged for additional traction.

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

Radial vs. bias Tubeless radial truck tire construction and performance is superior in almost every area, yet I will concede that there are certain applications where a bias tire has advantages. For the most part, it’s hard to believe that the argument still exists, but I cannot bury my head in the sand and say that bias ply tires are gone forever. But people who buy and sell trucks must understand that tubeless radial tires are the future, everything else is the past. Regardless, federal DOT regulations specifically state that radial and bias ply tires cannot be mixed on the same steer axle. And all of the truck tire manufacturers agree that bias and radial tires should never be mixed in the same dual position or on the same axle in any capacity. Radial tires have a more flexible sidewall, and there is a natural sidewall bulge when they are loaded. Bias ply tires do not “squat” as much as radial tires so when they are paired together, the bias tire will end up carrying more of the weight. While it is acceptable to have one axle of bias tires and another axle of radial tires if the vehicle has dual wheels, the best practice is to never mix bias and radial tires on the same vehicle in any configuration.

Inflation pressure You cannot talk about tires without talking about inflation pressure. Insufficient inflation pressure leads to irregular wear and casing fatigue, which can ultimately end up as an emergency road service call. When I was a technician, I appreciated the drivers who never checked their tires because I made a lot of money back in the day with after-hours road service. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you’re going to thump the tires on a truck to check the inflation pressure, you might as well put your hand on the hood to check the oil. Underinflated tires are also a good

American Trucker/ r/July 2010 19

cover story sign of a poorly maintained vehicle, so buyers should bring an air gauge and check the inflation pressure on all of the tires, especially the inner duals since they are traditionally the most neglected.

Rim matching While it doesn’t affect most truck buyers or sellers, those individuals or businesses that sell or purchase trucks with multi-piece tire and rim assemblies should be aware that the rim components must match. Each rim base, side ring, lock ring and flange should have an identification stamp so technicians can refer to the OSHA Rim Matching Chart to determine if it can be assembled. Most 20-in. side rings will fit on most 20-in. rim bases, but some bases are specifically designed for a three-piece configuration. The stamps help technicians identify the matching components, and federal DOT regulations state that a vehicle does not pass inspection if the lock or side ring is mismatched. If that isn’t a good enough reason to switch to tubeless tire and rim assemblies, I don’t know what is.

Rims and wheels The rules regarding rims and wheels are fairly simple (besides the multi-piece rim matching). They cannot be cracked or broken and none of the bolt holes can be elongated (egg-shaped) or out-of-round. Likewise, all of the original welds must be intact without any cracks. Fasteners cannot be loose, missing, broken, cracked, stripped or otherwise ineffective. It’s also important to note that federal DOT regulations state that aluminum wheels on steer axles cannot be welded, while steel wheel repairs are limited to the weld between the disc and rim. However, all of the rim and wheel manufacturers are united in their recommendations against any type of aluminum

Checking a tread depth gauge can give an estimated life expectancy of a tire. or steel wheel repair that involves welding so sellers and buyers of used vehicles would be wise to have them replaced from a liability standpoint.

Repairs There are different types of tire repairs. Puncture repairs are limited to the crown area of the tire (which is the center of the tread approximately 1-11/2 in. in from each shoulder) and can be identified by a single round rubber stem at the tread surface. If the round rubber stem appears to have two ends visible, then the tire was probably repaired on the vehicle with a plug so it should be demounted from the rim and inspected. Another type of repair is a section repair for a large injury in the tread or any size injury in the shoulder or sidewall. Section repairs involve the removal of body cables and/or belt plies with a large reinforced repair unit on the inside and cured rubber to fill the void. They are identified by

the rougher surface and possibility of a slight bulge when the sidewall is inflated. The maximum size of a repair-related bulge is 3/8 in. Tires that have been section-repaired are restricted to drive and trailer axles since federal law prohibits a steer tire with a “boot, blowout patch or other ply repair.” The repair technician is supposed to place a small blue triangle patch on the outside of the tire sidewall to indicate a section repair; however, this does not always happen so buyers and sellers should look for this type of repair, especially on steer tires.

Retreads First of all, I want to go on record and say that a properly maintained truck tire will often result in a highquality casing that can be safely retreaded multiple times. And even though truck tire maintenance as a whole is substandard, the technological advances in inspection tech-

nology have resulted in retread adjustment rates that are just as good, if not better, than the adjustment rates for new tires. There are several points that must be made, however. First, the only federal law regarding the installation of retreaded tires prohibits them on the steer axles of a bus, so there are no regulations that prevent the use of retreads on trucks in any position. Steer axle retreads may not be the best practice for every application, but they are not illegal. Second, every retread is required to be accompanied by a retread DOT code that identifies the retreader and the date of manufacture. The retread DOT code starts with the letter “R” and is followed by a three-letter plant identifier. The last four numbers reflect the week and year that the tire was retreaded (just like new tires). If a tire has two retread codes, then it has been retreaded twice. And while there are no universally accepted limitations regarding casing age, it’s important to note that most casing warranties expire seven years after the date of new tire manufacture. Finally, the tread depth rule for dual matching does not always work because different casings may have different diameters. Just because the truck or trailer has brand new retreads does not mean the duals are properly matched.

ers have chemicals that draw those anti oxidants to the surface and make the rubber shiny. It seems like a good idea and looks great, but in the long run, it probably causes more problems than it solves and does nothing to improve the performance or retreadability of the casing. Using soap and water is still the best way to clean tire sidewalls.

Regrooving Most, if not all, radial truck tires have the word “regroovable” molded on the sidewall. This indicates that the tire has sufficient tread rubber between the bottom of the tread grooves and the top belt so it can be regrooved. Fortunately, the only place where regrooving continues to hold on is in the transit bus industry where the severe operating conditions are not the best for retreads so there is little to no casing value. The easiest way to spot a regrooved tire is to look for tread grooves that do not have the raised humps, or wear indicators, because they will be missing. It’s also difficult to replicate the tread design so they should be easy to spot. Regrooving is not illegal, but it destroys the casing and is

totally dependent on the technician to ensure that the proper amount of rubber has been removed. If someone gets careless with the regrooving iron, the belts can be exposed, which creates another DOT violation that could be avoided. Whether you are preparing a vehicle for sale or looking to buy a vehicle, the condition of the tires and wheels is definitely part of the equation. If you have to rank these ten items in any type of order, I would recommend that you start with the ones that refer to federal DOT regulations since they can lead to failed inspections. Regardless, the most important tools are air pressure and tread depth gauges because they can tell you a lot about how long the tires can be expected to last. While the most practical way to determine the true condition of a tire on a used vehicle is to demount it from the rim and inspect the interior, the labor costs make it almost impossible. The seller should take steps to ensure that none of the DOT outof-service conditions are present, and the buyer should do a little more than kick the tires to ensure that the vehicle will pass inspection. AT

Tire sidewall conditioners Nothing makes a truck look prettier than black, shiny tires. Unfortunately, most of the products used to make those sidewalls glisten in the sun also lead to permanent damage that can ultimately reduce the life of the tire. Sidewall rubber already has antioxidants and other compounds to prevent the dreaded weather-checking, or “dry rot.” Some of the sidewall condition-

Customers come first Carrier’s diversification keeps the trucks rolling

N

Not too many companies, trucking or otherwise, would pick lime green as the identifying color of their business. In the case of Interstate Worldwide Relocation Services, that color proudly adorns every single one of its trucks, even those of its owneroperators, who handle long-haul shipments across the U.S. Yet the reason behind Interstate’s adoption of this unusual color speaks volumes about its philosophy: exploring every possible angle for ways to win more business. “That color was used by the Dept. of the Interior back in the 1940s, so my grandfather [company founder Arthur Morrissette] thought if he painted his trucks the same color, he might win more business from them,” says John “J.D.” Morrissette, president of Interstate Van Lines, the company’s domestic moving division. “It didn’t work out that way in the end, but the color stuck. And it’s here to stay, too.” Looking back at the company’s beginnings in 1943, when it was originally named Ace Moving Vans and consisted of a $450 used truck, some old furniture pads, and a single dolly, Morrissette believes his grandfather’s tight focus on developing quality moving skills, customer service, and physical presentation has helped the family succeed

22 American Trucker/ r/July 2010

in the moving business for the past 67 years. “That lime green has become our brand identification for us, with our customers associating it with quality service,” he explains. “We have won the Military Award for Quality Service nine times since 1995 and to meet continually rising quality expectations we became ISO certified in 2000.” Diversification is also another critical part of Interstate’s philosophy. While close to 70% of the company’s core business is governmentrelated, it has steadily branched out into other markets. The company started an international forwarding operation in 1971 and received Interstate Commerce Commission authority to do business as a full-fledged interstate mover in 1980. Today, at its 130,000-sq.-ft. warehouse and headquarters facility in Springfield, VA, Interstate maintains two temperature-controlled storage areas—one for computer goods and other high-value electronics, and another for sensitive long-term storage of household goods—along with a general freight receiving area so it can diversify its transportation and storage service offerings. The company also formed Interstate Relocation Service in 1997 as

Go to

part of a strategy to meet the relocation needs of both corporations and individuals. The division provides services ranging from real estate sales to arranging temporary housing and expense tracking. “We want to stay connected to the customer where we can and meet as many needs as we can for them during the move process, a onestop shop as it were,” Morrissette explains. “We’ll go to the customer, a corporation or individual, and look at all the services they need. And then we’ll either provide [these services] directly or find a partner to provide them.” That doesn’t mean, however, skimping on the back-office requirements. Morrissette notes that all of Interstate’s driver records and drug tests are still managed inhouse, as is dispatching for its company drivers and owner-operator contractors alike. Even most vehicle maintenance is handled internally via an on-site, three-bay facility staffed with six mechanics and housing a paint and body repair shop. The company also conducts pre-trip weighing with its own truck scale located right on the property. “The more we control ourselves, the more we make sure it’s up to our standards,” says Morrissette.
