F t out there in the trucking business, it’s been all green lights o owever, the good times, if we dare to call them that, are dest be short-lived, according to Noël Perry, senior consultant with research firm FTR Associates and principal of consulting firm Transport Fundamentals. The former chief economist for truckload carrier Schneider National believes the downturn is much closer than many Take advantage next people think—and may be more severe of good times than expected. First, the residential housing market before they turn remains in the dumps; since it’s responsible for 37% of trucking’s traditional freight mix, a huge chunk of revenue remains absent from the industry’s ledger. Second, the growing federal deficit, over $14.2 trillion and rising, will drag down the overall economy. “What that means to trucking is that interest rates will go up as lenders recognize government is not a good risk,” Perry said. Rising interest rates will contribute to a reduction in [gross domestic product] growth over FTR’s long-term forecast, and it also makes the U.S. economy more volatile. “That volatility means there’s less time between upturns and downturns, with the downturns becoming worse,” he explained. At the end of the day, it boils down to one thing: make money now for in the not-too-distant future, times are going to turn sour again. “The outlook means that, as rich as we are now, you must start preparing for the bad times that will soon follow,” Perry warned. inding direct-ship customers is always a challenge for small carriers. If you start with the idea of growing with a shipper, it adds a new perspective to your search. Start with a simple marketing plan, and keep hauling capacity in mind as the plan is developed. There’s nothing worse than landing a great customer only to find out you can’t provide the needed trucks. If you have five trucks and the company you’re looking to haul for has 20 loads to cover, you’re in trouble. When searching for potential shippers, look for a company with which you can grow. Don’t tie up all your drivers and equipment with one customer. You don’t want any more than 25 to 30% of your total revenue to come from one customer. (If you should lose this contract, you’ve only lost 25% of your revenue, an amount that is much more easily replaced.) Working with smaller shippers is better when your fleet is small but growing. Remember, 80% of manufacturers in the U.S. have 20 or fewer employees. Hauling for a smaller company means you’ll be on a peer basis with the decision-maker. This creates greater opportunities to develop a growth plan for your trucking company that corresponds with the shipper’s plans. S e ago, I warned about the danger of trusting p come in a plain white box. I cautioned fleets t cost savings associated with untraceable and un components often result in a false sense of security and increased liability. There may be times when an “off-brand” or “knock-off ” may be good enough, but when it comes to the operation of a truck (with or without the trailer), can have serious An “off-brand” may itconsequences. During the seem like a good recently held Annual Meeting and idea, but it’s not Exhibition for the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) of the American Trucking Assns., an exhibitor who I’ve known for years decided to conduct a little experiment. He stopped by four truck parts suppliers in the greater Tampa area and purchased standard 33-mm flange nuts for a hub-piloted wheel. As luck would have it, each supplier carried a different “brand,” so he ended up with four different brands of fasteners, some of which came in a plain white box. The first flange nut was from a well-known manufacturer, and all of the markings were clearly stamped on the fastener. We’ll call that one flange nut A. Flange nut B was from a notable supplier, and the markings were also clearly stamped on the fastener. On the other hand, the manufacturer of flange nut C was identifiable, but the markings could hardly be considered clear. Finally, flange nut D was the typical unmarked and untraceable fastener that you might buy out of the back of someone’s van. All of the fasteners were checked on a Skidmore-Wilhelm gauge so the bolt tension (or clamping force) could be measured at 500 lbs.-ft. of torque. As expected, flange

12 American Trucker/ er/May 2011

nut A performed admirably with consistent results that were in the middle of the desired range for a hub-piloted wheel. While I wouldn’t classify it as empirical evidence, it definitely supported the theory that name-brand parts deliver name-brand performance. Unfortunately, the consistency ended after the remaining flange nuts were tested. Flange nuts B and C were identifiable and appeared to be of high quality, but the Skidmore gauge showed otherwise, with up to a 50% loss of bolt tension at 500 lbs.-ft. Some of the readings were in the neighborhood of the minimum values, but none of the samples could be labeled consistent at the recommended torque. And it’s also important to note that the best examples were still on the low end of the desired range in clamping force. Flange nut D performed no better, but everyone expected it to fall short based on the lack of markings. As someone with experience in a courtroom, I will not release the names of the fasteners nor the places where they were purchased. Nor will I provide any information regarding the clamping force values. TMC has formed a task force to look into the matter so as soon as we have concrete data, I will be happy to share it. In the meantime, I am once again warning fleets to be very careful about the parts that they choose. When times are tough like they are right now, the temptation to save a few dollars with the plain white box is greater than ever. But the impromptu test that I witnessed sent shivers down my spine. Fleets can try to do the right thing by replacing worn-out flange nuts and in the process create a wheel-off situation—even when the proper torque is used to tighten the fastener. AT

W

e all know trucking is the process of moving freight from Point A to Point B. Sounds simple enough. But when you add into the mix that trucking is always one turn, one topping of a hill, one mechanical failure away from catastrophe, it creates the potential for chaos. Trucking is a competitive business with high costs and low profit margins and requires lots of cash to roll forward. It’s not surprising it can become chaotic. The question each trucker needs to ask himself is: Am I so addicted to this bedlam that I lose sight of my goals and why I got into this business in the first place? Setting aside the uncontrollable need of having diesel fuel running through your veins, let’s look at why we’re all in this business. What are our goals, and how do we achieve them? How do we accomplish this without all the chaos?

14 American Trucker/May 2011

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

Most small motor carrier owners and owner/operators have very simple goals: to create a sustainable revenue source to grow the trucking operation; to make enough money to provide a decent lifestyle for the family; to set aside money for the future (retirement and more immediate needs and wants); and to have the time to actually enjoy the fruits of all that hard work. For many, these goals are never quite met. They do come close enough to fruition that we believe that with just one more load, one more great customer, one more financially uneventful quarter, we’ll get there. But there’s always the unpredictability of equipment breakdowns, canceled loads, increases in fuel costs, the seemingly endless stream of regulations, and the cyclic

nature of the freight. The list goes on and on to the point that it becomes a chaos generator. Truckers are generally so wrapped up in finding, scheduling, hauling and delivering freight that they’re in a constant state of pandemonium. They deny there’s a problem, refusing to try to identify the root cause of the conflict or to solve it. The first step is admitting there’s a problem in living with this constant chaos. Let’s examine three areas that will determine if the turmoil is controllable. ◗ Does your trucking business revolve around the next phone call? Are you in a constant state of “got to find the next great-paying load,” or “the next big customer who will keep the trucks rolling?” Are you always playing catch-up, having to find loads at the last minute and settling for much less revenue due to your emergency status? Will he do the task exactly like you? Most likely not, but if you’ve given him the correct guidelines to follow, it will be done right. improvements. Hercules is attacking the concerns with a combination of cold plate refrigeration technology and insulation. “Hercules’ high-pressure foaming process provides a void-free body, thereby increasing the thermal efficiency of our body,” says James A. “Chip” Honse Jr., sales manager. “Also, Hercules promotes the maximum insulation possible. One inch of additional insulation can improve the R-value of the body by more than 17%.” Hercules is using cold plate technology in straight trucks as well. The 100% electric units absorb heat during the day and are recharged overnight.

REDUCING COSTS Thermo King has been busy upgrading its units for improved fuel efficiency to reduce overall operating costs and limit driver involvement. “Strong uptime and efficiency numbers are critical factors for a healthy bottom line,” says Chris Casazza, president of Thermo King North America. The SB-130, SB-230 and SB-330 units now include a fuel pre-filter system for ultra-low-sulfur fuels, extending the life of the primary filter, the inlet screen and the reefer engine. This allows trucks to run 3,000 hrs. between primary filter changes, Thermo King says. A new SR-3 controller allows data transfer via USB flash drive rather than via traditional laptops and cables. An optional ultrasonic fuel sensor can be installed directly into the tank as well, producing more accurate fuel readings. The company also introduced roofline application cooling solutions that increase capacities 50% over current units, says Doug Lenz, director of product management. The V-520 RT and V-520 RT Max offer a low profile condenser that minimizes the potential of damage. Straight trucks can see fuel savings of as much as 30% with a new electronic throttling valve (ETV) that is available for 12- to 28-ft. trucks. Thermo King says the ETV reaches the temperature set point 50% faster and runs the

16 American Trucker/ er/May 2011

engine 20% less. The ETV enhances T-Series single-temp truck units, including the T-600, T-800 and T-1000, with scroll compressors. Carrier Transicold recognizes concerns for fuel efficiency and temperature control, but also notes that customers increasingly want easy-to-use controls that provide “mistake-proof features for drivers,” says Mark Fragnito, product manager-electronics. Software applications such as FuelCheck, which prevents shutdowns due to low fuel, and Door Man, which runs the unit on low if the trailer doors are open, are two products designed to meet these needs. Carrier also offers IntelliSet, which allows customers to create custom settings and wireless diagnostics. For refrigeration units, the company is offering a hybrid system. “Our Vector hybrid diesel-electric units offer electric standby capability, which powers the unit via an AC electric supply rather than the diesel engine when stationary,” says Kevin Williams, product manager-trailer products. By making the compressor, evaporator fans, and condenser fans independent of one another, the unit will only run to cool the portion of the trailer needed at any given time, Fragnito adds. Kidron and partner Azure Dynamics Corp. have developed the Ultra Temp refrigeration cold plate system. The technology extends the route time available with cold plate systems by using the vehicle’s powertrain to generate power that is then stored in the refrigeration system. Stored energy will maintain cargo area temperature, and the unit can be plugged in overnight using eiFOR MORE INFORMATION, ther single- or threeVISIT THESE WEB SITES: phase power sources. Trailer

Trends Light weight and corrosion resistance are the big drivers

By Steve Sturgess, contributing editor

cover story

T

e Mid-America Trucking Show, held at the end of March in Louisville, KY, had its usual full complement of trailer manufacturers, suspension and trailer hardware suppliers, and refrigeration manufacturers. Efforts to trim weight to maximize payload regardless of trailer type were continuing themes that resonated throughout the exhibition hall in Louisville. Just as important, though, are major steps trailer manufacturers are taking to extend the useful life of trailers as truckers look to recoup their investment through longer use or enhanced resale value. There is also greater attention being paid to combating the corrosive nature of magnesium chloride, a popular chemical used to prevent icing on winter roads.

DRY VANS Available specs for Great Dane’s Composite dry vans have been expanded to address the needs of specialty haulers and others with frequent heavy floor loads. The new heavy-duty bottom rail (HBR) lightweight model is said to have added protection and weight savings without sacrificing strength and durability. The HBR option features a 21-in. high, one-piece aluminum extrusion that replaces the standard 11-in. bottom rail and eliminates the need for a 6-in. integral steel scuffband. This taller bottom rail adds rigidity to the trailer, reducing sidewall bulging and damage to composite walls. The Composite HBR is also available in a lightweight package option designed specifically for heavy-floor load operations that also require maximum gross payloads. Weightsaving features include a composite

front wall, aluminum crossmembers, and lightweight sidewall panels. For added durability, this package is available with a heavy-duty 24,000-lb. rated floor. Hyundai Translead’s new HT Hy Cube dry van features wall construction with a galvanized steel sheet outside and a new HDPE liner over a composite core. This makes for a very rigid and tough sidewall, Hyundai says, albeit at a slight weight penalty of around 200 lbs. At the Mid-America Trucking Show, Hyundai introduced a unique roller door seal that traps the door to prevent vibration damage and water leakage. The rubber seal is a pneumatic strip that expands to pinch the door panels in the sliding groove when the trailer brakes are released. This eliminates chatter of the door in the grooves and helps to prevent theft since the seal traps the door; even if a padlock were snipped off, the door cannot be raised.

REFRIGERATED TRAILERS Great Dane’s Classic Truckload trailer has been re-engineered to make it the lightest 53-ft. refrigerated trailer on the market, claims the company. At the same time, durability and resistance to damage and corrosion have been improved through the use of the Great Dane ThermoGuard and CorroGuard technologies. The bonded roof construction of the Classic reduces weight while increasing durability and main-

taining optimal thermal efficiency, says Great Dane. And its lighter, yet stronger lining is designed to withstand everyday operational wear and tear while protecting cargo. A computer-controlled urethane injection process insulates roof and sidewall components completely. The addition of the interior ThermoGuard lining further enhances the trailer’s efficiency. Recent testing of some of the first production line ThermoGuard-equipped reefers indicates a loss of thermal efficiency after five years compared to just one year for competitive reefers. ThermoGuard’s patented construction features a metallized film that virtually eliminates outgassing through the liner, which allows the insulation to perform effectively over the long term. The company says the durability and puncture resistance of this liner far exceeds all competing products, making it the only reefer lining to offer an allaround return on investment. Vanguard, which expanded into reefers from its initial dry van offering several years ago, has now brought assembly of the reefer box into the U.S. Previously, the boxes were assembled in China and shipped ready for final assembly. Now the individual roof, sides and floors are assembled here. Interestingly, the roofs are corrugated to allow for thermal expansion and contraction without stressing the panels or the bonded insulation. Interiors feature a Versitex liner and scuff bands that can be 12, 24 or 36 in. tall. The lack of external rivets or fasteners are distinguishing characteristics of both the Vanguard van

cover story and reefer bodies. Dorsey has announced the introduction of its wear-resistant LiteGuard 5000 refrigerated trailer. To back up its claim that this trailer is its most durable reefer to date, the company is including a 10-yr. limited warranty. The trailer’s robust, heavy-duty floor construction; impact resistant, heavy-duty stainless steel rear frame; tough, stainless steel upper coupler; and highly engineered rear doors with proprietary fuel-saving seal design all contribute to the longevity of the trailer, Dorsey says. A major design effort eliminates potential sources of corrosion and stronger, lighter weight composite materials have replaced moistureretaining wood products throughout the trailer. Foam-in-place insulation ensures a continuous seal, thus reducing wear on the trailer’s refrigeration unit and reducing operational fuel costs.

VOCATIONAL TRAILERS

Great Dane’s new MXP-120 flatbed offers maximum payload versatility and reduced potential for corrosion. All-aluminum construction eliminates the potential for corrosion found in steel and combination steel and aluminum models,

The Dorsey LiteGuard 5000 comes with a 10-yr. warranty. says Great Dane. The MXP-120 features two-piece bolted aluminum main beams, and like the popular GPL—the aluminum/steel combination platform— has extruded aluminum side rails, an aluminum floor, rear assembly and crossmembers. Weight savings are inherent in this trailer, particularly when equipped with aluminum wheels. The MXP120 weighs about 1,000 lbs. less than comparable combo steel-aluminum units, the company says. Rated for 60,000-lbs. concentrated in 4 ft. and loads in excess of 120,000 lbs. uniformly distributed, the MXP-120 is offered in 48-ft. and 53-ft. by 103-in. wide options. Standard specifications include a 10-ft.

Jost’s new landing gear includes a 20-lb. weight savings and corrosion resistance.

spread axle with air ride suspension, all LED lights, Grote’s Long Life Light System, and full length built-in sliding winch tracks. Steel and aluminum wheels, and wide base single tire options are offered as well. This year, Hyundai has joined the ranks of flatbed manufacturers with a new product that debuted in Louisville. The HT DuraLite is the lightest steel/aluminum composite trailer in the industry, the company claims, with the show model weighing just 10,600 lbs. riding on a Hendrickson Intraax 23,000-lb., 121-in. widespread tandem. The steel frame beams are fabricated with weight-saving webs and are hot-dipped galvanized as are the suspension mounts. The deck is aluminum with apitong nailing strips. East says its Hybrid dump trailer, combining the attributes of a straight-side trailer with a halfround, has been a big hit. The combination makes a trailer that is much more stable since it has a lower center of gravity when loaded and is less susceptible to tipping when the body is raised or when the truck is going around a corner. The trailer is more rigid than a simple half-round design, making it more stable on the highway and through turns, Hyundai says. The square sides use the East vertical

panel for an attractive and aerodynamic exterior that has been much emulated by other dump trailer manufacturers since East pioneered the design several years ago.

TRAILER SUSPENSIONS Hendrickson has redesigned its Y-beam, 25,000-lb. HT250YS air suspension to be 80 lbs. lighter than the original HT250Y. Designed to be used with the HT250US sidebeam lift, the combination can save as much as 100 lbs. Also, the new side-beam maximizes ground clearance and frees up the middle of the trailer. Hendrickson says the transition to a 5¾-in. from a 5-in. axle saves around 25 to 30 lbs. for each axle. SAF Holland has adopted the 5¾-in. axle for its CBX40 tandem slider suspension. This system has been available for several years, but now SAF Holland has rolled out the full CBX family, which includes the CBX23, CBX25 and CBX25/30. The latter features heavy-duty air bags and is designed to provide an air suspension that can creep when other axles under the trailer are lifted. There is also a spread tandem based on the CBX 5¾-in. axles. SAF Holland axles are all available with either drum or disc brakes.

LANDING GEAR Great Dane has applied its CorroGuard spray-in-place thermoplastic elastomeric coating to suspensions and landing gear to provide long-term protection from road abrasion and corrosion superior to other methods of surface protection for steel trailer components. Meanwhile, Jost has introduced an aluminum trailer landing gear that is available with a 20-lb. weight savings, with the added advantage of corrosion resistance and the ability to offer major cosmetic opportunities when polished.

Go to

East’s hybrid dump has a lower center of gravity to improve stability. Using standard Jost gearing and a wide range of Jost options, the landing gear has aluminum upper legs, mountings and bracing and a steel lower leg with a nylon coating.

REFRIGERATION CONTROL APX is a newly introduced electrical architecture and control system from Carrier Transicold. It features distributed electronics; claims to give better reliability, along with a larger, brighter display with simplified user interface; greater memory; and an expanded range of applications for unit customization. The display module with an illuminated information dashboard is easy to read at a distance, offers push-button simplicity, and, with fewer keystrokes, displays five times the information of competitive

equipment, Carrier says. It also has a USB dock to facilitate data downloads and software uploads. Claimed to be the easiest yet to program and use, APX provides easy temperature management for any hauled commodity, especially when users take advantage of popular optional Carrier applications. These include IntelliSet for ease of use, Range Protect for added fuel optimization, and DataTrak, which enables wireless monitoring, control and data transfers, as well as interface with telematics providers for WiFi, RF, cellular and satellite communications. The APX control system also introduces the newest app, Virtual Tech, a comprehensive diagnostic software that runs continuously in the background, monitoring the transport refrigeration unit to help avert system problems. All modules use industry standard multiplexed communications protocols so expansion is easy. Also, a system manufactured today can be easily upgraded with future hardware capabilities by adding new modules in ‘daisy-chain’ fashion, the company says. Wiring harnesses have fewer connections and weigh 40% less, due to shorter wiring runs. Exclusive to the APX module is the ability to display data recorder trip graphs—an at-aglance visual indicator of conditions within the trailer throughout a delivery run. AT

Hyundai’s entry into the flatbed market is the HT DuraLite, weighing in at just 10,600 lbs.

Flour power Milling company fights weight restrictions to remain competitive

A

Milling Co., the ability to um payloads is becoming gly more difficult challenge, says Gary L. Strausbaugh, vice president of transportation. “If we lose 500 lbs. of carrying capacity on two regional loads per day,” he states, “we’d have to haul an extra load every week to make up the difference. “One of the issues we’ve run into as we plan to purchase tractors with new emissions-compliant engines is how to address rising vehicle weight,” Strausbaugh explains. “Our goal with our pneumatic bulk trailers is to go out the door with 55,000 lbs. of payload. When you add the higher weight of new engines and diesel particulate filters, plus diesel exhaust fluid and tanks, it’s a struggle to maintain 54,000 lbs. of payload.” Based in Fostoria, OH, Mennel Milling has been milling wheat into flour products since 1886. Those products can be found in a number of food items sold by both national companies and independent bakers. Purchased by the Mennel family in 1917, the company is now owned and managed by a fourth generation. The company fleet operates at five mills in Ohio, Michigan, Virginia and Illinois, and five grain elevators in Ohio, Indiana and Virginia. Mennel’s private fleet includes

22 American Trucker/ er/May 2011

Fostoria-based MMC Transport Inc. and MMC Transport of Virginia Inc., headquartered in Roanoke. In the fleets are 65 tractors consisting mostly of International 8600 models for short-haul regional runs and ProStars for longer routes. The tractors range in age from 2000 to 2011 models. With vehicle weights going up, the company opted to buy early, replacing some older tractors before 2010 engines came on line. Today, replacement needs and growing demand are causing Mennel to make new buying decisions.

HOW LIGHT CAN YOU GO?

“Our specification discussions are centered on how light we can make our tractors,” Strausbaugh says. “We’re closely comparing the weight of our engine options to find the lightest alternative that doesn’t compromise on power. We’re also considering things like aluminum fifth wheels. Our focus is on power units because our bulk pneumatic trailers are already down to about 9,800 lbs. for a 2,000-cu. ft. model.” The Mennel trailer fleet consists of about 45 tankers that carry loads of milled flour to customers. There are also a dozen or so grain hoppers that bring raw material to the company’s

Go to

mills, six flatbeds, and 15 to 20 dry vans for hauling sack flour. In addition to his daily obligations at Mennel, Strausbaugh is very active in the National Private Truck Council and is currently vice chair. “Safety is always one of the biggest issues we face as an industry and in our individual fleets,” Strausbaugh states. “At Mennel we’re very proactive. We’ve instituted vehicle safety lanes for inspections and computerbased training and quarterly safety meetings for all of our drivers. We also send them for training at manufacturers’ proving grounds.” For the past six years, all of Mennel’s new tractors have been equipped with Eaton Vorad forward collision warning systems, and the company is looking into adding lane departure warning systems. “The goal is to add systems that enhance safety without being even more distracting,” Strausbaugh says. Staying competitive is of the utmost importance for the Mennel private fleet operation, which bids against contract carriers on lanes and loads offered by its parent company. “We’re not always the least expensive,” Strausbaugh says, “but we bring something a little different to the game because what we have to sell is the best overall service.”
