Clash of the outlooks

T

Think of it as a “clash of the outlooks.” On the one hand, we’ve got two reports—from Transport Capital Partners (TCP) and ACT Research Co.—predicting good times ahead for the trucking industry, especially in the second half of the year. On the other, we’ve got the 22nd annual State of Logistics report published by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Are we in good projecting the exact opposite: a U.S. economic slump, mirrored by a falloff in times or bad? Even freight. According to TCP’s latest Business experts can’t agree Expectations Survey, fleets are going to find themselves “in the driver’s seat” over the next year, with more than 80% of the carrier respondents expecting volume increases within the next 12 months. Yet Rosalyn Wilson, senior business analyst at Delcan and primary author of the CSCMP’s logistics report for the last seven years, isn’t nearly so sanguine on trucking’s prospects. She believes carriers are being set up for the “perfect storm,” as capacity is still leaving the market, drivers are difficult to find and keep, the truck order backlog is growing, operating costs are rising while revenues remain flat, and new regulations that will reduce driver and truck productivity are on the way. By the end of 2011, she cautioned, “we will be looking at a quite different freight picture, unfortunately one that will be fraught with challenges for shippers and carriers alike.” Which outlook is right? There’s no way to tell at the moment. All we can do is wait. AT

Wireless lift

Owning up to damage done

R

otary Lift has unveiled a new wireless mobile column lift, eliminating cords but not the power. Each Wireless Mach 4 column is powered by batteries and easily communicates with the other columns. “Our time and motion studies have shown that Wireless Mach 4 provides a productivity improvement of greater than 30% over similar lifts, saving an organization more than $7,600 in labor costs annually,” said Doug Spiller, Rotary Lift heavy duty product manager. According to Rotary Lift, the lift is faster and easier to set up, operate, troubleshoot, retrofit, and update than other mobile column lifts. The lift can be operated from a control panel located on each of the columns. The panel features an intuitive graphic layout of the column set-up, on-board diagnostics, easy-to-read LEDs and one-touch controls.

T

The Wireless Mach 4 can be operated from any of the four columns. The Wireless Mach 4 is available in sets of four or six columns. Each column has a rated lifting capacity of 18,000 lbs. and is powered by two deep-cycle marine batteries. Lifting and lowering of all columns is automatically synchronized. Backup communication cables are included. The system can also be retrofitted to existing Mach 4 mobile column lifts. www.rotarylift.com

hroughout my 25 years in the household moving and high-value electronic hauling segment of the industry, claims were always a major cost concern. Reducing or eliminating freight damage comes down to the following: how the freight is handled, how you treat the customer and his workforce, how you treat your employees, and when a claim is presented, how your carrier manages the settlement. It’s all in the details, from loading to the point of delivery. It involves chain of custody, detailed count, inventory and exceptions on the freight’s condition by each person in the custody chain. Also included is how a customer perceives the carrier’s attitude toward his people and his freight. Freight damage is inevitable because humans are involved in the process. Of course, proactive care is important toward not having any claims. But when the unexpected occurs, the first step in reducing the cost of the claim is immediate and full disclosure to the shipper/ receiver. Show them the damage, and then explain how you’re going to do everything in your power to make it right. This makes the process smoother for everyone. Also, because the customer feels you’re on his side, he’s less likely to push for a larger settlement, saving you money in the end. new program being offered by J.J. Keller seeks to clarify what the FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) initiative is about and why non-drivers in a company need to understand the program. “CSA: What You Need to Know for Non-Driving Personnel” takes company personnel beyond driving and identifies how CSA affects everyone’s jobs, according to Keller. Topics include hours of service and what it means for dispatchers; why employees must know which drivers can transport which materials; regulations that impact the vehicle maintenance BASIC; hiring and retaining good drivers; administrative support and early detection of problems; and how to inform shippers and receivers why unsafe demands cannot be met. The program is supplied on a 32-minute training DVD that includes a “message for management.” Additional tools include a discussion guide, 11 employee handbooks, and a poster entitled “CSA Carrier Scoring: An Overview.” www.jjkeller.com/33712

A driver’s best friend

I

It’s not often that the federal government can be credited with a good idea, but a recent conversation with a friend of mine who is a truck driver leads me to believe that Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) has already made a difference. Jim is a great guy with a huge heart—a company driver in every sense of the word. He is often asked to work on Saturday after putting in a full week and told me he regularly one for the CSA is helping “took team” by exceeding hours of service empower drivers to his to get a piece of back stay within the law equipment home or make a Saturday delivery. The same could be said for looking the other way when it came to marginal tires and other inspection items. As we talked, Jim told me about the times that he used to pull a trailer when the tread was a little thin on one of the tires. He didn’t want to make trouble and appreciated his paycheck every week, so he wouldn’t be the one to make waves. But everything is different with CSA, so he’s (finally) standing up for himself and refusing to hook up to a trailer with an out-of-service condition. Jim kept talking about a dispatcher who loves to threaten drivers with less work if they don’t play ball with hours of service. Being the genuine nice guy that he is, he told me he would usually cave in because helping out Mr. “X” was a good move with the bosses. Now that CSA is in place and there is more enforcement on the highway, Jim said he wasn’t going to take the chance and risk becoming a target for roadside inspections. The dispatcher hasn’t stopped the high-pressure tactics to bend the rules now and then, but Jim has definitely stopped listening. One only needs to look at the motor coach industry,

16 American Trucker/July 2011

where recent strike force inspections resulted in 289 unsafe buses or drivers being removed from roadways to answer any questions regarding the federal government’s position on safety. If statistics reveal that a particular segment of the trucking industry is in need of enforcement, then it is going to come quickly and unannounced. In its own version of “shock and awe,” the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) worked with state and local authorities to conduct 2,782 surprise inspections in less than two weeks. Another tool in the FMCSA tool box is a full safety compliance review, and 95 were initiated on commercial passenger bus companies at the same time. I’m sure they knew that increased attention would be inevitable, but I doubt they expected a full-court press like that. Tires are definitely a high priority item, so fleets must remember that federal limits regarding minimum tread depth are measured at any spot in any major tread groove. If one rib or tread block is irregularly worn to the point where it is below 4/32 or 2/32 in., then a violation will exist. Of course, most irregular treadwear patterns are caused by improper inflation pressure, so drivers should be properly equipped to gauge-check every tire prior to each trip. And if fleets are going to spend the money on quality air gauges and expect drivers to use them, then inflate-through valve caps are a must. Everyone must work together under CSA because it’s obvious that the new system appears to be working on different levels. I recently had a conversation with Jim at a Little League baseball game on a Saturday. It took only 10 minutes for me to realize that CSA is having an impact. He won’t be missing as many games. AT

With an ever-increasing number of regulations limiting idling, and fleets wanting to cut fuel costs, there has never been more focus on auxiliary power units than there is today. The units can save fleets money and create comfortable cab environments to help with driver retention. And with today’s newer systems, longer run-times and more consistent cab temperature are just two of the benefits. Espar Products was the first company to have its anti-idling truck heating products certified by the California Air Resources Board, according to John Dennehy, vice president of marketing & communications. The Airtronic line, which includes the D2 bunk heater and the Airtronic D4 and D5, use forced hot air and produce between 7,500 and 41,000 Btu/hr. All are CARB-certified, as is the company’s Hydronic 5 engine preheater. The Hydronic line, including the Hydronic 5, offers between 3,700 and 120,000 Btu/hr. It eliminates engine idling for cab warm-up, maintains temperatures, and provides rapid window defrosting capabilities by circulating the engine coolant for faster heat transfer. “Our customers want compact, easy to maintain and service heating systems that do more than just heat. They want systems that can heat fuel [and also] hydraulics; integrated heating systems with electrically powered air-conditioning systems; and also APUs and gensets,” Dennehy adds. The company’s products are available as OE-installed options, and these include Espar heaters that use 12- or 24-volt battery systems, and gasoline or diesel as an onboard fuel with sealed combustion chambers to create heat. Customers are asking for “a complete solution to the idling dilemma,” says Bill Gordon, vice president-aftermarket & Nite sales for Bergstrom. “Bergstrom was the first to offer a battery-operated system. The batterybased Nite system is CARB-approved, and available [through] both the aftermarket and factory-installed through Navistar, Freightliner and Peterbilt.” According to Gordon, the use of more efficient

business of trucking

Step slowly F

Expansion without a plan will put you on the road to failure

reight volumes are rising and America needs more trucks—now! This call is being heard in many sectors of the trucking industry as the economic recovery gains a good foothold. Many small carriers are asking, “Should I expand? Should I be putting more trucks on the road?” At first look, it seems to be a nobrainer. “If they need trucks, and I add trucks, I’ll increase profits and make more money!” Whoa! Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There are a lot of things to consider before expanding, including the impact of additional debt, higher cash flow, and adding personnel, both in terms of drivers and the office people to manage them. So what steps are needed to see whether expansion is right for your carrier? Expansion must satisfy an immediate need. The first step in

20 American Trucker/July 2011

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

determining whether to add trucks is to look at the need in regard to your current shipper base. Expansion based on a shipper or broker you have an established business relationship with is far smarter than risking the expense with an untried or new relationship. Next, you need to research the sustainability of this new freight hauling opportunity. How long does the customer expect these additional loads to last? Does he have signed contracts from his customer(s) to move this amount of freight? What is the frequency of the loads? Are these new loads traveling in already-established freight lanes, or do you need to find return freight? Is this going to be a flash-in-the-pan customer, or will it develop into a long-term freight hauling contract?

Go to

Will the shipper or broker be willing to pay a fair hauling rate? The second step is to be sure you have a hauling contract that creates a profit for you on every round trip your trucks make. Will the shipper agree to necessary increases due to rising fuel prices? Where will this customer’s loads land within your hauling rate range? It’s easier to work with an established customer, as both of you are familiar with one another’s operations and methods. Be fiscally responsible with your money. Make sure your bookkeeping is up-to-date. Have an established budget for your current operation so you have the foundation for the projected budget to be used in adding additional equipment. Expansion devours lots of cash, so having tight cost-control measures already in place with a balanced budget will assist in controlling this cash-eating monster. The bottom line is not to start any expansion

without a clear picture of where your company is financially, and have very tight control of how your money is spent. Cash flow is king during expansion. Tis means you should have a very defined accounts receivable policy that gets you paid on outstanding invoices as soon as possible. One area that gets hit the hardest during the time a carrier is adding equipment is the money used to operate on a day-to-day basis. In most cases, this ‘day-to-day money’ must cover equipment payments, licensing, hiring and paying drivers and office staff, paying truck insurance, plus the daily operational costs of running that truck. Ten, added to this, most accounts take 30 to 60 days to pay an invoice. Te entire company is running on a negative cash flow. It’s imperative you have enough cash in reserve to sustain your operation for 90 to 120 days. If not, this is when you engage a freight factoring company to purchase your freight invoices; this way you can receive the needed cash within 24 hours after delivery of each load. Many seemingly strong, established motor carriers have failed during expansion due to a lack of positive cash flow.

Go to

Remember, there are limited sources of income and an infinite number of places your money can be spent. Cash is the lifeblood of your business, so controlling both the inflow and outflow are necessary for success. Protect your money. The winners in business are the ones who practice frugality. Anyone who saw the movie Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade remembers the scene where they are trying to choose the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper. Te old Crusader tells them they must choose wisely, for they only have one choice. The same is true when you’re looking to expand your operation. Without enough cash to purchase fuel, pay employees, and meet other expenses required to operate your business, the likelihood of failure increases. Always choose wisely when deciding how and where you spend your hard-earned revenue. An experience I had while taking a shipment to a home in Bentonville, AR, helps illustrate this point precisely. I was delivering a piece of furniture to the home of Sam Walton, who at the time was already worth over $25 billion. As many readers know, he drove his older

pickup truck to and from the office. As I walked up the driveway to the house, I came across the pickup truck parked in the driveway with two legs sticking out from under the front of the truck; obviously, someone working on the truck. I asked if he knew where I could find the lady of the house. As the man rolled out from under the truck, he picked up a rag to wipe the oil off his hands and apologized for not shaking my hand. Ten he answered, “She’s not here, but can Mr. Walton help you?” “Yes. Where might I find him?” “Tat would be me.” Not only did this billionaire drive himself to and from work, he also performed preventive maintenance on his vehicle. Walton practiced what he preached. Frugality and careful money management helped him grow Wal-Mart into the world’s largest retailer. Frugality and careful money management could help you grow your trucking company to be the world’s largest motor carrier someday. A change is occuring as automated and automatic transmissions become more popular

T

here’s been a steady shift among truckers over the last several years to automated and now even fully automatic transmissions for their heavy trucks, and while manuals still maintain market supremacy with an iron fist, their grip is slowly loosening. The reason for the slippage is simple: more and more of the new blood entering the driver ranks never learned to drive a stick shift-equipped car, much less a truck. That leaves companies facing a dilemma of sorts. Do they hang on to manual transmissions, possibly increasing driver-training costs while suffering fuel economy losses and excessive wear-and-tear due to driver inexperience? Or do they jettison the manual in favor of more expensive automated manual transmissions (AMTs), or even fully automatic models, making it easier for a wider range of driver candidates to quickly learn how to efficiently and safely operate a heavy truck?

SALES SHIFTING UPWARD From where Shane Groner sits, truckers are increasingly starting to favor the second option. As product planning manager for the NAFTA region at Eaton Corp., Groner says that while sales of AMTs, which are essentially manual transmissions that are electronically controlled, and automatic transmissions, which utilize a torque converter, won’t overtake those of their manual brethren within the next five years, they’ll definitely rise to dominate the market within the next 10 to 15 years.

Go to

“If you think back 20 to 30 years ago, many people learned to drive with a manual transmission in their family vehicle,” adds Lou Gilbert, Allison’s director of North American market development. “Now, if you would like to purchase a passenger car with a manual transmission, it is an exception or special order. Today, the passenger car market in North America is nearly exclusively fully automatic transmission based.” He says the trucking industry is following this trend as well…but by about 30 years. “A significant portion of the straight truck and vocational segments are trending toward fully automatic transmissions,” Gilbert notes. “This trend may be the result of the automobile industry not producing many manually equipped vehicles, ultimately reducing the opportunity for drivers to learn the concept of manual shifting. This could also be a contributor to the driver shortage. In either case, it pushes fleet managers to explore easy-to-drive transmission options to attract and retain drivers.” Right now, Groner explains that it’s the cost premium holding many companies back from making the shift to AMTs and full automatic units, noting that an AMT can cost about $2,000 more than a comparable manual 10-spd. transmission. Yet many are also beginning to realize that AMTs—and their fully automatic brethren as well—can save big bucks over their operating life in a variety of ways, offsetting that extra upfront cost. “The big value driver is fuel economy,” Groner explains. “For example, the software controlling our UltraShift Plus AMT makes every

shift just like ones made by the very best drivers in a given fleet, meaning that every truck, not just the ones driven by the most skilled drivers, now has the opportunity to maximize fuel economy.”

INTEGRATION IS KEY Truck makers themselves are applying this very same logic in terms of how they integrate their own AMT products with their own engines and chassis to create a total system to deliver an improved baseline for fuel economy gains. “Each engine manufacturer and each engine within each family has a differing fuel-mapping strategy, and this highly guarded proprietary data is not shared completely outside of that engine manufacturer,” explains David McKenna, director of powertrain sales & marketing for Mack Trucks. “Think of this as the recipe for Coca-Cola, you may have an idea, but you simply are not going to get it all. As such, mixed vendor combinations of chassis, engines and transmissions are at a technical and performance disadvantage because the transmission only receives select data,” he says. So anytime an OEM can get 100% data exchange between all of those components, the ability to manage performance is exponentially increased, including the opportunity to achieve significant fuel-economy gains, McKenna notes. That’s one reason why production of Mack’s mDrive AMT, which is called the I-Shift by its brother company Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA), is being shifted to the U.S. starting in the third quarter of 2012.

American Trucker/July 2011 25

cover story Both Mack’s and VTNA’s respective in-house AMTs are built by their parent company, AB Volvo, in Koping, Sweden, right now, but production will shift to Volvo’s powertrain factory in Hagerstown, MD, with the help of $7 million worth of new investments. McKenna says that after Mack introduced the mDrive in the first quarter of 2010, it quickly sold out of the 500 units available, mainly because customers could gain up to 1.5% worth of improved fuel efficiency by automating gear shifting. “The vehicle, engine and transmission share all available data all the time. We can manage shift points based on mass, skip shift as required and even use the transmission to support engine brake performance by forcing a downshift maintaining higher engine rpm,” McKenna says in detailing how an AMT like the mDrive can help truckers improve truck performance. “Based upon the vehicle weight/ mass, the transmission and engine ECU can even determine which gear to start in,” he adds.

CONSTANT POWER McKenna also notes that using an AMT also ups the opportunity to revisit what he calls a “new/old concept” of providing constant engine power at extremely low cruise rpm. “We actually adopted this concept in 1967 with the Maxidyne engine profile that provided a lot of torque at low engine speeds and constant horsepower from the mid range,” he explains. “With the incredible advancements in air, fuel and combustion management, we can take this idea down to a whole new level, and we may be able to look again at simpler transmissions of 5 and 6 spd. via this path.” These are just some of the advances AMTs can offer truck operators across the board. For instance, Eaton’s

26 American Trucker/July 2011

Automatic and automated transmissions can improve fuel economy, reducing the price truckers pay at the pump to fill their vehicles. UltraShift Plus transmissions—both overdrive and direct-drive models— feature a new self-adjusting electronic clutch actuator for fast, smooth engagements that reduce wear and tear on the transmission components, he says. Thus no more missing gears and burning out clutches by rookie drivers just learning the ropes. Eaton’s Groner adds that intelligent shift selection software employs grade sensing, weight computation and driver throttle commands to make shift decisions for efficient, safe and profitable vehicle performance. Other benefits include: ❑ A hill start aid feature to prevent rolling while on steep grades and allowing for a controlled launch. ❑ Automatic, manual and lowmode selections offering control options to the driver. ❑ A creep feature for significantly improved maneuverability with continuous low-speed control. ❑ Six- and eight-bolt, as well as thru-shaft power take off (PTO) capabilities. ❑ An oil level sight glass to easily check fluid levels. Automatic transmissions are stepping up their game, too, offering their

own set of benefits. “We believe our new TC10 TS automatic for Class 8 tractors will be easier to drive, more capable, more reliable and more profitable for fleets,” says Andy Osterholzer, a member of Allison Transmission’s North American marketing team.

STARTING ANEW Introduced at the 2011 Mid-America Trucking Show, Allison’s TC10 is designed to offer what Osterholzer calls “a new approach” to Class 8 tractor transmissions. The TC10 is an entirely new design of an automatic transmission, he explains, possessing a twin countershaft gearbox and full-power shifts via wet clutches and a torque converter. It is scheduled to appear on the truck market in the fourth quarter of 2012, Osterholzer says. “The synergy between these components generates benefits and value for our end users,” Osterholzer notes. “Because of the narrow gear steps and full-power shifts, the TC10 will offer superior acceleration, higher productivity, increased fuel efficiency, reduced operating costs, less driveline shock and smoother shift-

cover story brethren do the same? Eaton believes so and is putting its money where its mouth is, so to speak. The company recently added extended protection plans for all makes and models of its UltraShift Plus transmissions in a variety of applications including standard, linehaul and severe service. Warranty coverage now can cover up to five years or 750,000 mi.

Navigating hills is less of a problem with an automatic or automated transmission. ing relative to both manual transmissions and AMTs.” The company adds that the TC10 design concept is ideal for distribution applications where a tractortrailer splits its work cycle between city and highway conditions. Such “full-power shifts” bring productivity and fuel efficiency to stop-andgo portions of a route, while the 10-spead-countershaft architecture offers fuel economy while cruising, Osterholzer says. “Initial in-vehicle demonstration tests have allowed us to document some very nice gains in fuel economy and we achieved increases in a vehicles miles-per-workday,” Allison’s Gilbert adds. “Our testing has shown this new transmission offers better fuel economy than an automated manual in the targeted duty cycle markets for which it was developed.”

THE FUEL GAME Osterholzer notes that the main driver behind Allison’s entry into the Class 8 segment is fuel economy. “The priority varies by vocation, but it would be difficult to imagine any fleet not interested in saving fuel, relative to its own operating characteristics,”

28 American Trucker/July 2011

he points out. “High mileage/low specialization applications will value fuel economy more than applications where performance and reliability are absolutely critical.” However, he stresses that recent third-party survey results have confirmed that fuel economy is secondary to reliability and durability for all applications. “If the truck is inoperable due to maintenance because it breaks down during operation or it gets stuck in the mud, then fuel economy is not the issue,” Osterholzer explains. “Losing a customer because they can’t deliver their service is a much higher concern for most operators. That said, we continue to look at ways to enhance fuel economy, just as we are always looking at ways to improve our product in other aspects.” Yet what’s really critical for used truck owners when it comes to both AMTs and full-automatic transmissions is warranty coverage and service support. Manual transmissions have a long history demonstrating their ability to handle the punishment dished out by numerous trucking vocations year in and year out. The question is can their AMT and fully automatic

Go to

“Now, for a small price, our customers have the option to safeguard themselves from expensive repairs and extend the fuel-saving, safety and performance features of UltraShift Plus for an additional one or two years,” notes Richard Muth, programs manager for Eaton. “The plans are also fully transferable, which will easily enhance the resale value of the vehicle investment.” Muth adds that the protection may be purchased through any truck dealer, included in the cost of financing a new truck, or purchased online at Roadranger.com. Plans can also be purchased within the first three years of ownership, he points out. Allison has a similar support program in place as well, says Osterholzer. “We have 1,100-plus service outlets that are able to perform different levels of service on our product,” he explains. “An owner considering a used truck may want to visit an Allison service outlet to get a ‘TransHealth’ report on their transmission. This will tell them the current status of transmission clutches and give them a summary of diagnostic trouble codes. Allison ReTran brand remanufactured transmissions come with a twoyear warranty and third year extended transmission coverage is available on the ReTran product when used in refuse applications. Extended warranties, Osterholzer notes, cannot be purchased after the first year of vehicle in-service date. AT

Moving safely Graebel focuses on communication as key to improving driver behavior

F

For Graebel Companies, mandating driver safety was not enough to ensure its fleet of drivers operated safely. There had to be a better way. “Fleet safety improves when individuals buy into the idea,” says Robert Shofstall, safety director at Graebel Companies. “Policies mandating behavior can be written, but a ‘you will comply’ approach is usually ineffective.” Founded over 60 years ago, Aurora, CO-based Graebel provides domestic and international moving and storage services. In the U.S., the company operates almost 1,200 trailers and employs the services of nearly 1,000 independent drivers. Growing up, Shofstall learned the business from a father who drove moving trucks and has worked for Graebel since 1994. The company’s safety record was a top concern for him when the former driver joined the safety department in 2005. In 2008, he became safety director. “We looked at all types of violations that were causing poor safety scores,” he says, “and began to address them by talking to drivers, providing training and establishing practices that help reduce violations.” These efforts have paid off at Graebel, culminating in a series of annual awards from the American

30 American Trucker/July 2011

Moving & Storage Assn. (AMSA). In March of this year, Graebel won the association’s 2010 Fleet Safety Improvement Award for demonstrating the best two-year improvement in its accident rate. In 2009, Graebel was honored by AMSA with its Safety Initiative Award for “implementing a comprehensive safety control policy designed to eliminate driver and vehicle violations discovered during DOT roadside inspections, and improve its overall safety program, which includes a reduction in accidents.” In the last two years, Graebel has also had two drivers receive AMSA Super Van Operator Awards in the Rookie of the Year category.

TIGHT CONTROLS

Strict driver qualification and training requirements contribute to safety at Graebel. “All drivers are required to attend a three-day training class, which covers not only safety but also claims prevention, customer service and paperwork compliance,” Shofstall explains. “In addition, drivers must complete this training every five years, and we use online training and safety training articles to keep everyone up to speed.” Graebel monitors driving habits through outside vendor Is My Driv-

ing Safe. The company’s monitors report to the safety department on driver speed; following distance; and lane, turn signal, and seat belt use. The department follows up on every report, which can include video, and audits the driver’s log against the date, time and location of the report. “When a driver violates a policy, we follow up with a conversation explaining the problem and the corrective action that needs to be taken,” Shofstall explains. “A violation can mean attendance at a defensive driving course, or even a suspension. “While drivers who can’t measure up are out of the game,” Shofstall adds, “we are just as quick to reward them for doing things properly and safely.” Shofstall credits much of Graebel’s success in improving the fleet’s safety record to the emphasis the carrier places on communicating with drivers. By all accounts he’s in regular contact with every driver, including all new hires. “All of our initiatives are focused on making measurable improvements in the number of vehicles involved in crashes and the number of violations, leading to a steady improvement in our safety scores,” Shofstall says. “By taking the time to listen and talk, we can help drivers adopt behaviors that continually improve safety.”

Some trucks haul lots of dirt. So do some filters. There are some big, bad, hard-working trucks out there. And the only way they stay that way is if they have some big, bad, hard-working filters. WIX® heavy duty filters simply capture more dirt, increasing the life of your engine and reducing its downtime. So the more dirt we haul, means the more dirt you’ll haul. And dirt equals money.
