Slim pickings

If you think it’s been tough finding good used Class 8 equipment this year, prepare yourself for more of the same, because the shortage we’re now experiencing isn’t going away anytime soon. “Production of new-truck sales bottomed in 2009 and most Class 8 fleets now utilize a 48- to 60-month trade cycle in order to optimize their net depreciation,” While prices are up Richard Simons, president of Daimler Trucks Remarketing Corp., told me and supply is down, in an interview recently. “As a result, the incoming supply of Class 8 used bargains do exist trucks will be decreasing annually until 2014 to 2015, a forecast that assumes that we do not fall prey to a double-dip recession,” he said. Simons also noted that demand over the past 12 to 15 months coupled with tight supply has led to a rebound in used-truck values from 2009 lows. Now, in his view, elevated used-truck values are good for the industry as they enable both fleets and owner-operators to trade existing trucks while purchasing equipment. What are folks trying to buy these days? Simons said fleets seeking used Class 8s are gravitating towards aerodynamic units with 14L or 15L engines. Most fleets, though, are now purchasing trucks with 500,000 to 600,000 mi. on the odometer as long as the trucks are covered by a comprehensive warranty, said Simons, simply because lowmileage units with the right specs are extremely hard to find now. So while there may be slim pickings out there, fleets are still finding solid trucks they can put to good use. AT

ack in 2010, Rand McNally took an ownership stake in DriverTech, an in-vehicle mobile computing technology. That pairing produced TruckPC, a solution that uses DriverTech’s secure onboard computing platform combined with Rand McNally’s IntelliRoute TND truck navigation solution. Now, the pairing has produced another product that takes advantage of each company’s expertise. The Rand McNally TND 760 Fleet Edition mobile communication and truck navigation device integrates with a truck’s onboard computer and can send information over both WiFi and cellular networks. Setup takes less than 30 minutes and does not require a black-box monitoring unit, the company said. Even without a black box, the unit “offers 90% of the functionality of higher-end mobile communications systems for less than half the price,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally.

The total cost factor T

ruckers and carriers need to look at the total revenue needed for a round trip, not just a single leg of the trip. For example, a small carrier hauls a 1,500-mi. load outbound for $3,750 plus a return for $1,950. The total is $5,700 over a six-day trip and 3,000 mi. The figure that counts is the $5,700 for the week and how it compares to weekly costs. If the fixed cost is $300 per day, plus 65¢/mi. for fuel and 15¢/mi. for maintenance, repair and tires, the total cost for the week would have been $4,200—leaving a weekly profit of $1,500. If the trucker looked at his cost per mile for the week at $1.40/mi. (4,200 divided by 3,000 mi.), he likely would have never taken the $1,950 return because it paid only $1.30/mi. (10¢ below his cost per mile figure). He would have left the $1,500 profit sitting on the dock while he deadheaded somewhere else or sat for a better load. Too many truckers leave wads of profit sitting on docks because they are caught up on their per-mile rate. They should be looking at total revenue for the week and month against their costs for the same period. Heavy lifting

E

Even though Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 29 CFR 1910.177 does not specifically mention the necessary equipment and training that must be in place when lifting a vehicle, it still falls under the OSHA Act of 1970 that was passed to improve workplace safety. Also known as the General Duty Clause, Section 5 states that each employer must provide a place of employment is free from recImproper use of that ognized hazards that cause serious hydraulic jacks could injury or death. Therewhen technicians can be deadly fore, lift trucks or trailers with hydraulic jacks, they are definitely covered by OSHA. The consequences of improperly lifting a large truck or trailer are often severe if something goes wrong. That’s why all of the hydraulic jack manufacturers recommend the use of a jack stand. Jacks are designed to lift the vehicle while jack stands are designed to support the weight. When jacks are used without jack stands, a small seal is the only thing protecting the technician from a fatal crushing injury. That’s why the weight must be transferred from the jack to the jack stand so the vehicle is mechanically locked out. Unfortunately, too many technicians use a practice called “shock loading” where the jack stand is placed under the vehicle to act as a stop but the weight remains on the jack. Since jack stands are not rated for this type of load, they may or may not offer any protection when used in this manner. Besides the obvious safety risks, there are also some tool and equipment costs to consider. If a jack is continually used to lift and support the weight of a vehicle, the usable lifespan will decrease. On the other hand, when

16 American Trucker/October 2011

the jack is used to lift the vehicle so the full weight can be transferred to the jack stand, the jack stands will probably wear out faster than the hydraulic jacks. When it comes to working on trailers, the jack and jack stand combination is usually quite simple. There is plenty of room at the end of each axle so the technician can easily position the jack and jack stand; however, the same cannot be said for the tractor. With limited space on the end of each axle, it can be difficult to lift and support a drive axle with a jack and jack stand without using the differential as the lifting point. When the vehicle is empty, the risks are minimal. But when the vehicle is fully loaded, using the differential as a lifting point can be problematic. Unfortunately, there is a vacuum of information regarding the lifting points on large trucks when compared to the passenger and light truck industry. Vehicle manufacturers provide the recommended lift points for every make and model to the Automotive Lift Institute (ALI) so an annual yearbook can be published and distributed to the aftermarket. As it stands today in the automotive tire industry, technicians do not have to guess when determining the positions of the lifting arms on most domestic and foreign light vehicles. There are a few published guidelines for lifting trucks, most of them by the Tire Industry Assn. or the Technology & Maintenance Council. But they are very general in nature and are nowhere near the detail provided by ALI. If the drivetrain and truck manufacturers have an issue with using the differential as a lifting point, then they need to step up to the plate with a solution or it will be business as usual. AT

Tire inflation

T

Trailer tires are always going to lose air, whether due to faulty tire stems or simply time. Even tires in good condition can lose up to a pound of air a week, making inflationpressure checks all that more important for truckers looking to maximize fuel efficiency. According to government and industry-wide research, underinflated tires result in a 2.5 to 3.3% decrease in fuel mileage. That can mean an added cost of about 12¢/gal. at the pump, according to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. As a result, truckers are looking for better fuel economy, fewer roadside service calls, increased tread life, and reduced time spent manually checking tires. Here’s a quick guide to some systems available to keep your fleet’s tires up and running. Inside duals are most often overlooked, and pressure gauges may not be accurate even when used correctly, according to Al Cohn, director of new market development & engineering support at Pressure Systems International (PSI). “The Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) by PSI is a simple design that can be installed [or retrofitted] on virtually any type of trailer,” says Cohn.

More truckers are turning to automatic systems

CONSTANT AIR

An automatic system with constant air pressure, MTIS uses a patented rotary union that is the only moving part in the system, Cohn points out, significantly reducing maintenance cost. “Air from the existing trailer air supply is routed to a control box, then into each axle. Acting as a conduit, the axles carry air through a rotary union assembly at the spindle end (Thru-T) and then distribute the air to each tire as needed,” Cohn explains. Excessive wheel-end heat can be monitored by the company’s ThermAlert option, which identifies faulty or worn seals and bearing deterioration before they become bigger problems. Cohn says ThermAlert has a special spindle plug that will melt away when wheel-end temperatures reach abnormal levels, allowing air to escape through a vented hubcap and triggering warnings to the driver. According to Bob Montgomery, vice president of fleet information systems for Stemco, about one-third of all

18 American Trucker/October 2011

new trailers include an inflation system. “And that number seems to be growing,” he says. “The technology is still maturing and as such, there is some frustration with many of the systems installed in the marketplace today,” he adds. “These frustrations usually involve maintenance costs, systems that are no longer connected or functioning, and overinflation of tires. Some systems can pressurize or allow contaminants into the wheel end. These are the primary challenges facing inflation manufacturers today, and they are actively working to resolve these issues. At the end of the day, fleets seem to be looking past the costs and frustrations because the value equation is there.” The Airgo automatic tire inflation system allows customers to “monitor, maintain and manage their tire needs and expenses,” says Tony Ingram, president of Airgo. “The fleet customers of today have become more cost-conscious, and with the increase in fuel costs, maintenance costs, and costs in general, they are requesting Airgo to provide a system for tire management to prolong tire life, reduce labor costs, improve fuel mileage, and reduce downtime, which in turn would allow them to operate more efficiently and economically.” Ingram points out that the Airgo system “virtually eliminates any operator involvement” FOR MORE INFORMATION, and simplifies both VISIT THESE WEB SITES: the installation and maintenance AIRGO SYSTEMS process. “Airgo has www.tireinflation.com made the system simple, yet robust GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Many of these pitfalls hold true in the trucking industry as well. ❑ Prepare beforehand: Have all the information readily available concerning your revenue needs and the market conditions in which you are looking for freight.

Then put a plan together establishing your rate range and the point at which you say, “No.” Is repeat business in the offing? Are you negotiating for a multiple-load contract or is this a last-minute, spot-market load? Which best fits your carrier’s needs? Once you’ve mapped out your negotiation plan, you need to outline your customer’s plan. From your market research, you should be able to determine the customer’s bottom line and what’s most important to them. For example, is it low price or superior service? Know your potential shipper’s priorities or create a series of questions to make that determination.

❑ Figuring you won’t get what you need: This is a common assumption many carriers make. The objective in any negotiation is that each party involved comes away with a win. Nevertheless, in the same sense, each party enters negotiations knowing it will need to give something up in order to get something. Don’t be afraid of doing a bit of fishing to find where the lines are drawn. For example, on a spot-market load, ask if it’s a regularly scheduled load. If the answer is yes, and it fits within your freight lane strategy, then you might be willing to give a little on price for a guarantee of hauling the load each time you have a truck in the area. However, don’t give up anything without getting something greater in return. ❑ Pay attention to your customer: How will the broker or shipper evaluate your offer? Frame your offer in a way that the customer understands and can compare other deals presented. For example, you may quote a per-mile rate plus a fuel surcharge percentage, but the customer is looking for a single, flat rate that folds in all extras, including the fuel surcharge. You need to be prepared to present the customer with the flat rate figure. Instead of saying, “This 2,000-mi. load is $1.60/mi. plus a 25% fuel surcharge,” give the $4,000 flat rate figure. It’s always better to communicate within the customer’s paradigm rather than require a customer to reverse-engineer your offer to his viewpoint. ❑ Understand that cross-cultural and regional negotiations are different from local negotiations: Part of being a good negotiator is understanding cultural

and regional differences. Just by the nature of where your carrier is headquartered, your understanding of the local culture and way of doing business there is generally fairly simple. But as you parlay with companies and folks in other regions of the country, it’s important you understand those cultural and regional differences. ❑ Understanding anchors: Anchors are part of a bartering process known as “anchoring and adjust-

“Frame your offer in a way that the customer understands and can compare other deals presented.” ment.” This involves setting the parameters for negotiation. For example, say you’ve established a rate range between $1.90 and $2.25/mi. for a 2,000-mi. load. Your anchor figure becomes $1.90. If the broker quotes you a rate of $1.70 mi. and if you acknowledge that $1.70 offer with a counteroffer, you move the negotiation anchor down to $1.70. In order to maintain your $1.90 anchor, instead of countering with a figure, respond with, “That’s below what is acceptable. Please come up with another offer.” A better way is for you to establish the high figure first. If your target is $2.25/mi. and the anchor or bottom line is $1.90, start with $2.35/mi. It’s

22 American Trucker/October 2011

Go to

much easier to lower a rate than it is to get the customer to increase what he’s willing to pay. ❑ Inking the deal too quickly: How many times have you offered a rate that the customer took immediately? Thinking it over later, you wonder if you could have gotten more. That’s why it’s important for you to start high and come down if necessary. Don’t ask for a higher rate than a particular market will bear. But rates are like boulders—easier to get down a hill than up one. ❑ No bragging: Finally, when you’ve negotiated a great deal, never brag or do a ‘victory dance’ witnessed by or reported back to your customer that tells him you would’ve hauled it for less. Your customer isn’t your opponent in a sports match. Childish behavior will only drive your customer to a matching payback in the future. With all the job churning and companies buying out their competition today, the probability of negotiating with the same person in the future is high. You never know when you’ll be sitting across the table from him again. Following these tips doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll succeed in getting all the loads on which you negotiate. But you will set a highlevel professional relationship with a broker or shipper, and he’ll know where you stand as far as your rate structure. Brokers have greater respect for and are more likely to call on carriers who understand the market and have well-established rate ranges. TIRES:

More Choices Tire makers are responding to market changes with more specific model offerings BY DAVID CULLEN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

A

ccording to tire company experts, key changes are occurring to over-the-road (OTR) and on/off-highway truck operations in each of the key user segments to which tires and retreads are marketed.

The biggest news right now in app-specific tires concerns the OTR segments of long-haul and regional, where the line between them is blurring enough for many freight haulers to want “double-duty” tires while other fleets are running more routes of different lengths than before, which is changing their traditional tire needs as well.

saving fuel

And the desire of fleets of all types to cut fuel costs is driving the production of more fuel-efficient tires. Tis is already the case with longhaul tires designed to comply with EPA SmartWay fuel-saving verification standards. “Tis [application-specific] approach provides specific solutions in order to effect a fleet’s requirement for profitability and overall cost reduction,” points out John Hagan, senior director of sales for Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. Echoing Hagan’s view, William Estupinan, director of technical service for North and Latin America for Giti Tire, which markets GT Radial truck tires, says the “tire industry is moving in the direction of developing products that are ultraspecialized to precisely meet specific service options. Tis being said,” he adds, “there are versatile tires that can offer a fair balance between two operating conditions if the conditions are fairly close to each other on the spectrum.” According to Gary Enterline, Mi-

Go to

chelin product category manager, whether one is talking about longhaul, regional, on/off or vocational trucking, “within each broad category we [are getting] into more application-specific tires. Typically, there will be one or two applications that will be key drivers [for us] to develop tires for their specific needs.” “What’s happening in the market is that buyers are getting much more educated about both the high cost of tires and of fuel,” remarks Clif Armstrong, director of marketing-commercial vehicle tire-Te Americas for Continental Truck Tires. “Fuel means the most to long-haul operators, of course, and fleets [in general] are getting more application-specific about tires, especially as they more ofen have a complete tire program in place.” “Today, tires are being looked at a lot of different ways,” says Aaron Murphy, vice president of CMA, Double Coin Tire’s North American subsidiary. “Tis puts added pressure on the performance of application-specific tires. And this has not occurred by choice; every fleet has new economic factors to consider about their operations.”

all aspects

Yokohama’s Rick Phillips, director of commercial sales, contends that “commercial tire manufacturers are investing a significant amount of R&D to design and manufacture products that can meet the needs of specific fleet applications.”

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

Phillips points out that there is “understandably a very high demand for fuel-efficient products right now. However, it’s important that a fleet consider all aspects of the operation. For instance, as you change properties of the rubber compound to reduce the rolling resistance [to improve fuel efficiency], the rubber also becomes less resistant to cuts and chips. So a fuel-efficient tire probably would not produce any noticeable savings in a severe application that is susceptible to a lot of cuts and chipping.” “In long-haul applications,” says Michelin’s Enterline, “fleets will [typically] consider fuel efficiency to pay back faster and at a higher level [than longer original tire life]. Te savings in miles per gallon can come close to paying the cost of the tire.” He says an EPA SmartWay-verified steer, drive or trailer tire “does represent a tire efficient in rolling resistance and some of ours are even lower.” He notes that at this point, the “SmartWay list is aimed at long-haul type tires only; however, we have tires for long-haul and regional use that fit there as well.” According to Donn Kramer, director of marketing for Goodyear Commercial Tire, the company’s G662 FuelMax steer tire for regional-haul applications is SmartWay-approved as is a full line of long-haul tires, including a trailer model fitted with Goodyear’s DuraSeal puncture-resistant component, “a gel-like inner liner that instantly seals punctures of up to a quarter-inch in the repairable area of the tread.” Guy Walenga, director of engineering-commercial products & technologies for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, says the difference between long-haul and regional truck operations began to

American Trucker/October 2011 25

cover story narrow back in 1990 with the rollout of twin-screw tractors with set-back front axles that provided greater maneuverability. “When those trucks hit the market,” he explains, “carriers had a truck that could run long haul but also handle regional or even P&D runs.” Walenga says the call is toughest when a fleet bridges these two types of over-the-road applications. “A true regional tire will not run as long in long-haul service,” he points out, “but a long-haul tire does not have the sidewall protection afforded by a regional model.” He also contends that given the high cost of fuel, fleets running regionally may find it “worth considering a high-mpg tire” over one designed for greater sidewall protection. In an effort to keep the GT Radial lineup simple and straightforward, Giti’s Estupinan says the company is moving in the direction of offering only fuel-efficient tires for long-haul operations. “Our GT Radial GSL213 FS steer tire and GT Radial 669+ FS drive tire are already SmartWayverified, and our GT Radial GT979 FS trailer tire will soon be.” Estupinan advises fleets to pay close attention to their trailer tires when considering fuel economy. “On a tractor-trailer combination, the steer tires contribute 15-20% of

Desire of truck operators of all types to save fuel is driving production of more fuel-efficient tires. the tire’s overall contribution to fuel economy, drive tires 30-40% and trailer tires about 40-50%.” He points out that considering that trailer tires have the biggest impact on fuel economy and represent the largest population in the average fleet, selecting the proper trailer tires will have a bigger impact on mpg.

WORK TIRES

According to Toyo’s John Hagan, the company is now rolling out its new M157 free-rolling axle tire for non-drive positions. He points out the tire is SmartWay-verified and features Toyo’s proprietary e-balance technology. The result, he states, is a uniform and consistent tire that de-

livers improved fuel economy while fighting irregular wear. Harsher operating conditions experienced by fleets have tire makers changing in the vocational or mixedservice segment as well. Continental’s Armstrong says one common requirement of vocational fleets is the ability to complete three to five retreads per tire casing. “On top of that,” he points out, “there is, in general, high demand placed on these tires, and tire life may be measured [not in tread mileage but] in hours of service.

ON VS. OFF

The on/off-highway arena is also being looked at closely due to one central realization common to all tire makers: Trucks running on and off the highway today are spending more of their time on the road than off it. According to Walenga, Bridgestone has found that rather than running off-road the “50 to 60% of the time as we had long thought, if on/off-road tires are used off-road 10% of the time, that is a lot.” The upshot is these tires are being looked at differently with the goal in mind of deploying compounding that “will keep the offroad protection needed in place, but also improve their on-highway performance, including fuel economy.”

Since trailer tires outnumber others, they have the biggest single impact on fuel economy. He adds that if a tire is being used off-road 30% or more of the time, then the fleet should choose a tire “geared for off-road performance and not fuel efficiency. And protecting the casing is key to making such on/off-road tires pay out.” Though a niche market, more tire makers are adding wide-base tires to their product mix. For example, Goodyear’s Kramer says the company’s new SmartWayverified G392 SSD drive and G394 SST trailer wide-base tires for longhaul and regional-haul applications feature Fuel Max Technology and also are the first in the industry to offer flat protection through the

DuraSeal technology. Kramer says these new wide tires are game-changers because if a standard wide-base tire goes flat, “there is no limp-home capability, and in about 30% of the cases, the tire deflates to a level where it ruins a $450 wheel. But with DuraSeal, customers can run confidently with wide-base and reap the weight-saving benefits of the tires, while gaining excellent fuel economy and long miles to removal.”

SUPER SINGLES

Bridgestone’s Walenga reports the big action in the super-single arena for long-haul and regional tires is the growth in availability of

50 Series products—typically size 445/50R22.5—which have the same overall diameter height-wise as 22.5-in. low-profile dual–fitment tires. “The 50 Series tires make it easy to swap out duals with singles,” he explains. “Earlier wide-base tires, going back 10 years, were 65 Series products and were 4 in. taller than duals.” Michelin is keen on its new X One, which Enterline calls the “next generation” wide-base tire “because it is sized to replace duals without being any wider in diameter.” He points out that the X One XDA Energy tire is designed for long-haul use while the XDN2 is suited for regional and some longhaul applications. Continental’s Armstrong points out the tire maker is adding two new wide-base tires aimed at the longhaul market. The first, the HDL2 Eco Plus (heavy drive long haul) in size 445/50R22.5, features 27/32nds of tread depth, a closed shoulder, and regenerating sipes in the middle of the tread blocks. He says the tire’s “groove geometry” was designed to reduce premature wear. The second is actually the addition of the 445/50R22.5 size for the existing HDL2 DL (heavy drive long haul, deep lug) tire. At 27/32nds of tread depth, this tire’s tread design, Armstrong notes, was copied from the existing sizes of the HDL2 DL and provides the excellent traction with an open shoulder. According to Double Coin’s Murphy, the tire maker will begin offering “super wides” in the near future. “These tires are currently in evaluation and will initially be aimed at linehaul drive and trailer applications,” he advises, and will be designed to replace low-profile 22.5-in. dual tires. Regardless of application, tires are a “huge investment for a fleet and a big part of their operating expense,” observes Yokohama’s Phillips. AT

Online edge Muncipality finds disposal of equipment is easier with virtual auctions

M

Making effective vehicle remarketing choices is an important part of J.D. Schulte’s responsibilities. As the fleet manager for the City of Moline, IL, he has at his disposal a variety of alternatives for disposing of used vehicles and equipment. The hard part, he notes, is to continually evaluate the choices by taking into account a number of factors, and to make decisions that result in realizing the highest possible resale value. The city’s fleet of about 380 vehicles and pieces of equipment is managed by Fleet Services, a division of the Public Works Dept. Fleet Services, which handles specifications, acquisitions, upfitting, maintenance, replacement schedules and disposal of assets, owns all units and leases them back to internal users. The operation also manages the city’s vehicle replacement fund with the assistance of the city finance director. “We’ve used the Internet for most of our disposals since 2005,” Schulte explains. “Internet auctions have resulted in an increase of over 60% in disposal revenues. Bidding for a typical auction starts at the unit’s depreciated value, and while some units have been sold for the minimum, most sales are significantly higher, even when taking into account auction fees and the cost of shipping and delivery.

“Online auctions also give us flexibility because they eliminate the need to sell all used vehicles and equipment at one time,” Schulte continues. “We’re often selling specialized equipment so we build profiles on buyers and notify them when units they may be interested in become available.”

THE VIDEO AGE In 2007, to help promote its available vehicles and equipment, and to answer typical questions from potential buyers ahead of time, Fleet Services began creating videos of the equipment and posting them online. For example, a video will demonstrate if the hydraulic system works properly, and include a walk-around of the unit to showcase specific features or defects. “When we filled a support staff vacancy this past spring, we incorporated Internet auction skill requirements into the job description,” Schulte says. “We now have an in-house support staff person who is creating our vehicle and equipment remarketing videos and taking pictures of units and posting online auctions. Rather than using an outside provider for this service as we have in the past, handling auction development inhouse is much more cost-effective. “We also started holding live auc-

tions this year,” Schulte adds. “This format provides an auction setting with a virtual bidding option that attracts an even broader audience. We’ve seen some of the best sale proceeds on highly specialized utility units with special hydraulics from this program.” Remarketing considerations for the City of Moline actually begin when the fleet is making initial decisions about replacement cycles. “We use lifecycle cost analysis for the majority of our purchasing decisions,” Schulte explains further. “When a vehicle is acquired, we establish an amortization schedule with an anticipated salvage value. We also anticipate how many years the unit will be in front-line service and put in a calculation for inflation. Financially, we try and prepare to fund the depreciation of a unit so we can purchase its replacement when it is no longer cost-effective to operate. “Proper planning before a vehicle is purchased and the use of online auctions has increased resale revenues,” Schulte concludes. “Proceeds from the sale of used vehicles or equipment go into our fleet’s replacement reserves. This means we have more funds available when we need them; more importantly, we’re using fewer tax dollars.”

email: safetychecksystems@rogers.com Tel. 1-800-552 4696 www.safetychecksystems.com ARE YOUR BRAKES OUT OF ADJUSTMENT ???? HERE IS THE SOLUTION The greatest identifiable safety problem in the Transportation Industry is air brakes out of adjustment. The Safety-Check® system has solved the problem and will save you time and money. A low cost, easy to install Air Brake Stroke Gauge System for all air brake vehicles. Safety-Check® is the only gauge system engineered to Pin Point your brake adjustment within 1/32” without going under the vehicle. That’s right, no more crawling under the vehicle to measure push rod stroke. ON POWER UNITS The clevis pin connecting the pushrod clevis to the slack adjuster is used to hold the gauge indicator. This patented indicator system uses a new supplied clevis pin with a high visibility indicator for precision measurement. The clevis pin is supplied in 1/2” or 5/8” diameter. Safety-Check® greasable clevis pins are an industry exclusive. Our optional pin allows lubrication of the clevis pin, slack adjuster bushing and clevis eliminating seizing or binding. PATENTED Safety-Check® gauges are installed permanently on each air brake chamber in minutes and require no modifications and never wear out. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Automatic slack adjusters do not reduce the need to do daily inspection for air brake adjustment.

Fleet owners, drivers and owner / operators can literally save 100’s of man hours. No more will you be climbing under the vehicle to check the brakes, and the whole process takes only minutes! No costly delays at weigh stations due to incorrect brake adjustment, it takes only minutes to inspect your brakes yourself. ON TRAILERS The pushrod clevis jam nut is used to hold the indicator bracket. Just back off the jam nut and install the fork indicator bracket. Retighten the jam nut to spec. Installation is completed in minutes. The trailer gauge bracket is a formed high strength steel member and is unbreakable. Universally adjustable to suit all trailer applications and chamber strokes. Standard greasable clevis pin fits manual or automatic slack adjusters. The new standard greasable pin is included with SYSTEM II trailer gauge when ordered as greasable.
