Best of both worlds

W

While some of you are reading this introduction to the April edition of American Trucker on a computer screen or portable device, many of you are actually holding the magazine, rather than a tablet or smartphone. I’d like to say thanks to everyone, of course. But I got into journalism because I liked the look and feel of glossy magazines. Ten again, back in the Dark Ages— say the 1980s—the best information came from daily newspapers, weekly news magazines or, my favorites, the big, slick monthly targeted at Let’s all have a magazines the special interests of little fun, make theirButreaders. I also was a tech geek who actually used a little money email and the Internet before there was a World Wide Web or Google. I’ve been part of the desktop publishing revolution since the frst Mac, and the idea that journalists could publish their work instantly, and even without a corporate infrastructure, was thrilling. Of course, established publishers are still trying to fgure out the best way to manage in “these here modern times,” as my father-in-law likes to refer to anything developed since color TV. For myself, both as an editor and a news junkie, this is the best of times: I can create and consume on the medium that best suits both my preferences and the message. Te digital world is instant, global and ofen—for better or worse—unmanaged, or at least largely unfltered. Yet I still cherish a magazine: no on/of switch, very portable, inexpensive and essentially unbreak-

able, and with an intuitive yet simple interface (in other words, once you’ve read one magazine, you’ll know how to read them all). If you misplace your copy, just a wait a couple of weeks and a new one comes out. Heck, you can even give yours away to a pal. Most importantly, you can be sure the content is professionally gathered and presented. Anyway, this is my rather long-winded way (sorry, not very professional of me) of saying we’re making a lot of changes at American Trucker to stay ahead of the curve, both online and in print. Most obviously, we’ve completely redesigned the news and entertainment content portion of the website. Please give the new AmericanTrucker.com a look if you haven’t yet. As for the magazine, the changes will be less dramatic, although you already might have noticed our new cover and some redesigned pages. Going forward, our goal is simple: to deliver the information owner-operators and small feets need to be successful. Or, to phrase it a little more casually—let’s all have a little fun, make a little money. So while we’re still working on the new and improved American Trucker, please pardon our dust. And feel free to let us know how we’re doing. Whether on paper or online, the reader is still my boss. AT

FMCSA dismisses fault

E

ven though 9 in 10 police accident reports contain the type of information needed to determine fault in truck crashes, a study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has concluded that incorporating such determinations would be time-consuming and expensive, and would not improve the agency’s ability to identify those carriers most at risk of future accidents. Te report, made public Jan. 21, comes in response to trucking industry criticism that the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) system for evaluating carrier safety does not factor in accident responsibility. All incidents, even those where the truck or driver are not at fault, are fgured into CSA’s Crash Indicator BASIC, a calculation which ranks carriers based on their propensity for crashes. FMCSA currently considers all recordable crashes involving a commercial vehicle occurring in the preceding 24 months. Independent research has demonstrated that a motor carrier’s involvement in a crash, regardless of its role in the crash, is a strong indicator of future crash risk, the agency contends.

And while incorporating fault determination could improve future crash prediction by as much as 5% for carriers involved in fatal accidents, such accidents represented only 3% of all crashes in the agency’s database. “Analysis using all crashes shows that incorporating crash weighting determinations does not consistently improve the crash indicator when the various weighting approaches are applied,” the study concludes. Trucking interests expressed “disappointment” in the study’s conclusions. “It is not lost on the trucking industry that the word ‘accountability’ is in the title of CSA, yet FMCSA continues to ignore crash accountability,” said American Trucking Assns. executive vice president Dave Osiecki. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. (OOIDA) called on FMCSA to thoroughly apply the data available to it. “If the agency is providing information to the public that is to be used to make safety decisions or conclusions, that information should be relevant, accurate and as complete as humanly possible,” said OOIDA spokeswoman Norita Taylor. —KEVIN JONES

Understanding the necessity of SmartWay

T

here has been plenty of grumbling about the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program from time to time, often from truck owners who question whether there’s truly a direct connection between the pro gram’s voluntary standards and monetary savings supposedly gained from fuel efciency improvements those standards aim to generate. Perhaps the more important question to be asked regarding SmartWay is what shippers think about it, especially as the program is designed in part to get shippers to reserve freight for compliant carriers. The ultimate driving force behind the SmartWay program is to help reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from supply chains. In some ways, however, the concern over those emissions is almost beside the point. If shippers, i.e., the trucking industry’s customers, want to decrease emissions and fuel consumption and are willing to give carriers good paying freight to help them do so, it would be smart business to closely examine the SmartWay program. According to experts, by using a simple Excel spreadsheet, carriers can report information to SmartWay about fuel consumption, miles driven, and the type of freight they haul. Tey say this produces a measure of emissions across three types of pollutants: CO2, oxides of nitrogen and particulate matter. Tose data points enable shippers and lo-

8 American Trucker/April 2015

gistics companies to calculate their carbon footprint. While the data is voluntarily submitted, it undergoes a series of checks to verify its accuracy. Shippers use SmartWay data in

their corporate sustainability studies, carbon disclosure projects, and other public reporting to demonstrate to customers and stakeholders that they are concerned about environmentally responsible freight transportation. The experts also noted that it’s critical to prioritize and weigh emissions data accordingly to determine which metrics or combination of metrics matter most, such as: ❑ CO2 corresponds to fuel use. If reducing fuel consumption in your supply chain is a goal, a carrier’s CO2 score is an important metric to watch. ❑ Grams per ton-mile of CO2 are indicative of freight efciency, although shippers that move lighter loads may prefer a metric of grams per mile of CO2. ❑ Shippers that are concerned about smog in a localized area (say, from drayage operations) can examine grams per mile of PM. It’s important to let the free market take over, the experts said, keeping in mind that SmartWay scores factor into shipper decisions when it comes to freight contracts. Tose carriers that score well tend to have access to more freight. —SEAN KILCARR

Hitting the recruiting trail How to combat the truck driver image problem and fill those seats

BY TIM B RA DY, BUSINESS EDITOR

W

hy are people afraid of becoming truckers? Why are the young avoiding the trucking industry? Te answers to these questions may vary depending on whom you ask. Some are weighted by the unsure nature of the job and dealing with 80,000 lbs. in heavy trafc or having that same 40 tons of freight and metal pushing you down a steep

14 American Trucker/April 2015

6% mountain grade. Other answers include the long hours, the sure boredom and loneliness of the road, and the mounting regulations being piled on the truck driver from state and federal regulatory agencies. Many people want a life outside of their job, and the trucking lifestyle isn’t always conducive to that. Truckers also face health risks such as obesity, diabetes, sleep disorders, and back problems.

Ten there’s the question of pay. While a trucker’s pay has been increasing over the last couple of years (and it’s an encouragement for current drivers to consider staying in the industry), it has yet to become attractive to the multitude of twenty- and thirty-somethings. Do they want to drive a truck? Would they rather stay with their current employer? And that means there is no one to transport

business of trucking

the numerous loads that need to be shipped. Te largest incidence of driver turnover is in the frst year from the point of hire. A company may have an overall turnover rate of 60%, but the ‘new driver flight’ can exceed three or four times that amount, up to 240% or even more.

Defining insanity A trucker is hired, goes through orientation, is teamed with a driver-trainer for a time, and then let loose on his/her own. Within the next few months, the driver is complaining about not being paid for the real miles he’s driving, having to wait too long to be loaded or unloaded without pay, not getting home when he needs to, and not earning the money he thought he would. Dispatch then receives the “come get your truck” call, and the cycle starts all over again with the next driver and then the next. Unfortunately, the industry and many carriers repeat the same hiring practices while expecting to eventually hit pay dirt with the truckers they hire—and hope those truckers will actually stay. But the insanity of driver turnover continues to churn in a neverending downward spiral. What’s the solution? First of all, what are your needs? How can you ofer a better deal to drivers than that of other carriers? Focus on providing the best driver package you can and then fnd drivers who see the value being ofered. It all comes down to communication from the very frst interview with a prospective driver. Driver retention begins during the recruiting interview. Te more information exchanged by

16 American Trucker/April 2015

driver and recruiter during the initial hiring process, the better the driver understands your company’s operations and procedures. Tink of it more like an investigation and research into the wants, needs and requirements of both your company and the prospective driver. It’s not a question of right or wrong, but a way of determining compatibility. Te biggest complaint drivers have about the recruiting process is that they aren’t told the truth about what they’re getting themselves into with a particular carrier. Tell your driver applicants all about your operation: the good, the bad, the ugly. How well is your company performing? What are the company’s strategic plans for the future? Communicate this information to the applicant. If the applicant has any questions, be as honest as possible as most people don’t like surprises that could potentially affect their income. One of the leading causes of driver turnover is not explaining clearly a company’s policies during the recruitment process.

Driver expectations A driver has three key needs that must be fulf lled. Tese are reasonable compensation for all hours required to perform the duties of driving, loading and unloading a truck; consistency in pay from week to week; and scheduled home time. But the most important task you can perform in finding the right driver is to listen carefully for information. • What are this driver’s needs and wants? • What is his family going to ex-

pect and need? • What are his expectations in terms of money, time at home, type of equipment, and amenities? • What are his career goals in the next year, three years, fve, and beyond? • What are his personal fnancial requirements, house payments, car payments, other debt, and personal fnancial goals? Are there any other income sources to cover these personal expenses in addition to the trucking position? Compare this information to what you have to ofer. Will the applicant’s needs be met by your driver package? Will he have the desired home time? Will he be able to cover all of his obligations and still have money to save for the future with this pay? Do his career goals dovetail with what you have to ofer? Te more you know about the applicant’s wants, needs and fnancial requirements, and the more informed the trucker is about your company’s methods and policies, the stronger the business relationship will be. Investing the time to communicate openly and honestly with each driver applicant is how your company will keep the best truckers. Forward-thinking communication builds a powerful, longterm trucker/carrier relationship. By taking the proactive approach of honest disclosure and communication, you have the tools necessary to fnd the truckers you need—even in a tight market. If you are a regular reader of this column, then you undoubtedly know that I am a strong proponent of retreading. The technology and uniformity that is part of producing a modern retread is unparalleled in the history of tires—and it’s only going to keep improving. Despite the persistence from old-school trucking professionals that retreads are the cause of tire debris on the highways, the data More than price proves that they are just as durable as their factors into the new-tire counterparts. And while the retread decision process itself has transformed from manual labor to technology, there are still enough differences from plant to plant to create some measurable separation between the top and the bottom of the list. Machines do the majority of the work in a modern retread manufacturing facility, but the people running the equipment play an important role in the quality of the finished product. The biggest question that remains is which retread process best suits the needs of the fleet. For lack of a better term, flat precure retreads are the most common because they are economical and can be applied to almost any casing. The rolls of rubber come in various widths with the tread designs already molded in place to accommodate different sizes and profiles, so fleets that run a wide variety of tire brands and sizes are often best suited for flat precure retreading. Another type of precure retreading is known as a ring tread. The tread is formed in a ring that is stretched to fit over the casing. The curing process is identical to the flat tread, with the biggest difference being there is no splice where the two ends of the tread come together.

Ring treads are also manufactured with a slight contour, or radius, so they fit more naturally to the curved surface of the casing after it is buffed. Mold cure retreads continue to fascinate me simply because of the precision this particular process requires. After the old tread is buffed away, strips of raw rubber are wound around the casing to an exact diameter and radius. Then it is placed in a segmented mold that imprints the tread design and cures the rubber. When it comes out of the press, it will have the look and appearance of a new tire because it is manufactured in the same way. In the old days, each process had its drawbacks. Flat precure retreads could vary in diameter and the splice didn’t always match. But computer buffers and builders solved those problems. Ring treads were only possible on a limited number of sizes and brands, but manufacturers are now able to offer tread designs that fit almost any tire. And mold cure retreads were even more limited, but the retreaders that are still capable of producing them have found a way to retread most casings. Selecting the retread process that works best for the fleet depends on a number of factors. Visit the plant so you can see firsthand the level of technology and craftsmanship that goes into the product. Then test the tread in the field so a true cost-per-mile or cost-per-32nd comparison can be established. Price is not the only determining factor when it comes to the performance of each process; each has the potential to save a lot of money or cost a lot of money when the decision is not based on how much mileage is delivered. And while looks can be deceiving, the best-looking retreads are typically the bestperforming retreads regardless of how they are cured. AT

put-down, once directed at annoying whiners, went like this: “Here’s a nickel—go call somebody who cares.” But does anyone under 50 even get the punch line these days? Less than a generation ago, most truck drivers conducted business just as their fathers and grandfathers had: from roadside public pay phones and with a shoebox full of paperwork and receipts under one arm. Then came cell phones, followed by satellite positioning systems, increasingly affordable and portable computing power, the Internet, and, fnally, technology that pulled it all together: the smartphone. Trucking hasn’t evolved into the space age world of the Jetsons, but the industry has moved into the cloud. Now, through company intranets and global social networks, a driver and his truck are constantly connected for business and for recreation, and—as drivers increas-

ingly recognize—for better and for worse. Most obviously, the same technologies that let drivers instantly reach friends and family also expose drivers to interruption and distraction. And while communication tools combined with load-matching databases make for a much more effcient marketplace, a just-in-time supply chain puts a great deal of pressure on the men and women behind the wheel. More subtly, despite this pervasive connectivity, drivers say they are more isolated than ever on the road. What’s going on? Make the rounds of a truck stop parking lot and ask professional truck drivers about how they’ve tapped into this modern age of trucking—about tips and tricks and tools for managing business from the cab—and almost uniformly the answers are a variation of “my smartphone and my wife.” But stick around for a cup of coffee and chat with drivers, and you

will hear about a reliance on a wide range of gizmos and gadgets. Indeed, so much technology has been so seamlessly integrated into the cab and into everyday trucking that most drivers hardly give it a second thought.

‘OLD SCHOOL’

This growing dependence on technology is most apparent in talking to industry veterans. Drivers new to trucking don’t have the perspective of someone who pulled cross-country loads way back when the years still numbered 19-something. John Wieczorek considers himself to be an “old-school” owneroperator. He grew up in the shop of his father’s small trucking company, and he’s been running his own rig for 32 years. He’s been with Mercer Transportation for the last 12 of those years, hauling mostly sensitive military freight. Wife Carol has been driving with him for 11 years.

When I frst started working, the company gave us pagers. Every time that pager would go of, we’d have to go fnd a truck stop phone. Then you got a busy signal, and you’d start over and redial that 800 number. I was so overwhelmed when I fnally got with a company that had Qualcomm.

ÑTina Gordon, a company driver from Dayton, OH, who works for CalArk

“Let me tell you, the digital age will never take over,” he says. But a quick run-through of their on-the-road routine shows just how digital the Wieczoreks truly have become. For starters, “the iPhone is always in his hand,” Carol notes. “The cell phone has been the greatest improvement in the trucking industry,” John says, and he recalls the “pleasure” of stopping in the rain to fnd a pay phone and call for loads, get directions, or talk to family. And many young truckers today may have never even used one, Carol points out. “I’m strictly Apple all the way,” John says. “They told me, ‘once you buy your frst one, you’ll never go back.’ I started with the iPhone, then the iPad, and now I’ve got an Apple laptop.” Of course, what’s an owner-op without his coffee-stained road atlas, duly annotated with observations on loading docks and routes? “A truck driver’s got to have an

22 American Trucker/April 2015

atlas!” he says. “I try to keep it behind his seat at all times,” Carol adds. Well, except his paper atlas has become more a security blanket than a critical tool. Tey now rely on mapmaker Rand McNally’s digital version, complete with satellite tracking. And that’s just the beginning of their move to digital connectivity.

NEW TRICKS

Among the other devices prominent in the cab of their 2013 Freightliner is a Qualcomm MCP-200 for communication with Mercer (and he also uses a Mercer app and posts to the Mercer driver Facebook page). The Wieczoreks receive Dish satellite television with a Winegard “in-motion” receiver mounted on the roof of the sleeper. That’s a recent update; they decided they were missing too many shows with a receiver that didn’t work while the wheels were turning.

They also have his and hers SiriusXM radio receivers, solving the problem of who decides what to listen to. “Now we get trucking news instantly,” John says. And while he misses tuning in to the late Truckin’ Bozo, he doesn’t miss the static of AM radio. The Wieczoreks manage their business from a MacBook, using the ProftGauges accounting package. But, as John points out, their data is stored in the cloud, so the latest numbers are readily available on any of their devices. To submit paperwork and get paid, they use TripPak and an HP all-in-one device to scan documents and transmit them over the Internet. Significantly, integrating the new technology into trucking operations hasn’t been particularly difcult, the Wieczoreks contend. “I adapt to things pretty quickly,” John says. “Te hardest part of new technology has been these new engines,” he adds with a laugh—al-

though he wasn’t entirely joking. John and his son built his tractor from a glider kit with a 1998 remanufactured Detroit 12.7L engine. Again, he’s serious about keeping his old-school reputation—at least when it suits his operation and his home-built tractor that is getting 8 mpg on super single tires, he boasts. They did outsource the refurbishment of their salvage-yard sleeper fnd. “I try to salvage and repurpose everything I can,” John says. And as someone whose whole life has revolved around trucking, he is not at all sold on change for change’s sake. “As far back as I can remember, I was riding with my father, sitting in restaurants listening, hanging around the shop,” he says. “Te old drivers miss the diners, the tables at greasy spoons where you could sit and talk.” And what’s happened? “Technology,” he says without hesitation.

LOSING TOUCH

While owner-operators can now manage their business anywhere they go, many are concerned that they no longer can leave it in the cab. Indeed, she’s quit using her CB. “I just don’t run with a CB anymore. To me they’re obsolete,” Gordon says. Gordon also considers herself “old school,” although she doesn’t think twice about using the GPS capabilities of her phone—and getting misdirected by an earlier navigation unit has left her unwilling to rely on them. “I’m a prehistoric person,” she says with a laugh, but then demonstrates she’s not exactly driving a wooden-wheeled oxcart. “I integrate the directions dispatch gives me with Google maps.”

DRIVER DISTRACTION The downside to all-purpose smartphones is too many people on the highways, including truck

The Wieczoreks are not alone in their concern for truckers losing touch with each other because they are so connected to everyone and everything else. “I enjoy what I do and I enjoy people when I meet them out here, but all this technology has isolated the truck driver,” says Tina Gordon, a company driver from Dayton, OH, who works for CalArk. “It’s forced the driver to stay in the truck more.” In that regard, she calls the mandatory 30-minute break in the hours-of-service rule “a good thing.” “It motivates drivers to get out and move around,” Gordon says. “Some of us get no exercise at all, sitting up in the truck like we do. To be honest, I’m not the healthiest person in the world because I sit up

in this truck all the time.” Wit h many sle ep ers now equipped with microwave ovens and mini-fridges, “you can do everything in these trucks now— they’re basically mobile homes.” And even when drivers make their way to a truck stop restaurant, most will be sitting in a booth talking on their phones, she notes. “I do miss the conversation,” Gordon says. But she does appreciate the many advantages ofered by modern technology and connectivity—even as she admits to be a late adapter. As a driver who’s been in trucking for 21 years, she remembers the downside to the good ol’ days. “When I first started working, the company gave us pagers,” she says, laughing at the not-soancient history. “Every time that pager would go of, we’d have to go fnd a truck stop phone. Ten you got a busy signal, and you’d start over and redial that 800 number. I was so overwhelmed when I fnally got with a company that had Qualcomm.” Te use of Qualcomm has since expanded significantly from the early days of basic load dispatch to today’s systems, which can provide as much operational information as companies and drivers want to include. “I like it, but I’m not one of those people who want to put a cover over the box,” she says. “A lot of it has to do with how close the company watches you.” And while plenty of drivers worry about the Big Brother aspect of modern technology, Gordon sees a real safety advantage to constant communication. “You can be out there on the road and run into a real sticky situation,” she says. “If that company doesn’t keep a constant watch over your Qualcomm, then what’s the use of having it—you’re just stuck.”

Who would’ve thought [just 20 years ago] we could be rolling across New Mexico surfing the Internet from the bunk.

drivers, are letting themselves be distracted, Gordon explains. “It scares the bejeebers out of me,” she says. “I’ve got my phone set up to send a text saying I’m driving and I’ll reply later. Tat’s awesome.” Gordon doesn’t have a wireless plan for her laptop, and while her smartphone is good for basic communication, many important web pages don’t display properly. So, she can’t work with the editor and page designer as she helps get her husband’s book ready for publication. And, she admits, she spends time following her friends on Facebook and playing Candy Crush. She also does a lot of her shopping online and uses the Internet to familiarize herself with the different areas she runs from Ohio to Texas, while using the CalArk yard in Hurricane Mills, TN, and the adjacent Pilot Travel Center as her central base. “Afer driving all day, you don’t feel like carting your laptop and ev-

erything you need over to McDonald’s to get WiFi,” she says. A connection through the services ofered by IdleAir has been an ideal solution, she explains. “I love IdleAir. I wish they had it in all the areas I deliver to. It’s the only time I get to watch TV— just kick back and relax,” Gordon says. “Te climate in my truck is just so much better, and my CPAP machine works better. I get better quality of rest.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

Of course, 15 years into the 21st century, trucks are more sophisticated than ever and have more onboard computer processing power than the Apollo spacecraft that took men to the moon and back. Yet a big rig from that era could still do the job today—at least in terms of powering a load from coast to coast. Essentially, freight still moves on roads pretty much as it has for the past 100 years, and while the

highway system and equipment are superior, advancements have been incremental. As American Trucker detailed in the January issue, many transportation experts expect the real revolution to come when computers, combined with sensor technology and digital control systems, will actually take over driving the trucks. Te role of humans in the cab will necessarily change substantially if it’s not, ultimately, eliminated. Some expect autonomous trucks to be commonplace on America’s highways sooner rather than later, but most drivers are skeptical. On the other hand, as John Wieczorek points out, “Who would’ve thought [just 20 years ago] we could be rolling across New Mexico surfng the Internet from the bunk?” Professional truck drivers don’t have to love all this technology, but those who don’t understand it and adapt will find themselves dinosaurs, indeed. MANAGER: Anthony “Tony” Eiermann TITLE: Manager of asset and value management COMPANY: Coca-Cola Refreshments OPERATION: Deliver products via a global ground fleet of over 200,000 vehicles

ack in 2011, Coca-Cola joined the National Clean Fleets Partnership, a group that falls under the umbrella of Clean Cities, a U.S. Dept. of Energy program designed to bring together the federal government and private sector in an efort to PROBLEM reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Coca-Cola deployed various tactics to help reduce the fuel consumption footprint of its global feet by optimizing delivery routes, reducing packaging weight, and adding diferent alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) to its feet, such as hybrid-electric, allelectric, compressed natural gas (CNG), and liquefed

B

natural gas (LNG). Tony Eiermann, manager of asset and value management, says Coca-Cola now operates over 738 hybrid electric trucks—9% of its total delivery feet—along with 25 all-electric vehicles, two LNG-fred and seven CNGpowered Class 8 tractors. Eiermann notes that Coca-Cola likes to “keep vehicles forever, which means we run them until the wheels come of.” So, the company needed a way to get drivers to help make all of the equipment last as long as possible. But the feet as a whole still needed to generate fuel savings while minimizing maintenance expenses.

o accomplish all of those goals, Coca-Cola created the “Smart Driver” program to improve vehicle and operator safety while saving fuel. Te added bonus would be reduced equipment wear and tear. Eiermann says Coca-Cola’s focus SOLUTION on developing the Smart Driver program, which frst launched four years ago, fows from an adherence to what he calls its four ‘P’ policy: people, processes, performance, and partners. And the processes followed by Coca-Cola’s people— in this case, the truck driving skills put into practice every day—can signifcantly impact company performance in a good way, he stresses. “Just knowing when and when not to use the air conditioner, to ensure trucks are driven in the right gear, and that trucks are ‘tuned’ to their specifc duty cycle by our maintenance personnel all help decrease wear and tear while boosting fuel savings,” Eiermann points out. Te program also aims to deliver information to drivers in a positive way. According to the company, by altering on-the-road behavior, the driver of a conventional

T

diesel-fueled truck can reduce fuel consumption by 10%. Tis is a potential fuel saving of $1,500 per truck per year. Eiermann notes that part of the process is developing anticipatory driving skills. “It’s about recognizing the type of trafc fow you are in, how you approach trafc lights, monitoring pedestrian activity around your vehicle, how you make lane changes, and especially paying attention to road-grade changes,” he says. For example, one tip he ofers is that “slow and go is better than stop and go.” If drivers maintain a long following distance and keep rolling in trafc, they can achieve a 20% fuel reduction. Other tips include keeping idling to a minimum, following the speed limit, and checking tire pressure. “Maintaining steady vehicle momentum is the key,” says Eiermann. “It requires less fuel to keep a vehicle moving steadily versus constant stopping and starting.” Coca-Cola uses a telematics system to deliver a dashboard-style report on each driver that includes data on idling, adherence to routes, hard braking, and speeding— all part of its Smart Driver eforts to boost feet efciency while reducing costs. —SEAN KILCARR

More than a GPS Improved insight and tracking is allowing Savannah to reduce costs while boosting customer service

S

Savannah, Georgia’s oldest and fifth largest city, was established in 1733 as a British colonial capital and later the first state capital. The city features a strategic port and is well known for its park-like squares that make it one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the U.S. Behind the scenes, the city’s approximately 130,000 residents are served by a fleet operation of over 1,400 vehicles and pieces of equipment used by a range of departments. The Vehicle Maintenance Dept. in Savannah, headed up by Director Iris Ellsberry-Smith, manages and maintains the city fleet for user departments. Services include preventive maintenance, repair and warranty work, and tire repair and replacement at two locations. The department’s 39 employees, serving in a variety of positions, also handle road service and fueling needs; new vehicle specification; acquisition and preparation; disposal of used equipment; and local, state and federal regulation compliance. A common goal for city departments operating fleet vehicles is to

28 American Trucker/April 2015

continually improve operational productivity. One particular requirement was met through a search for a new GPS-based system that was able to do more than typical mapping of vehicle location and speed. “We wanted advanced capabilities that would let us add data—for instance, our own department’s maps— to the system,” says William Hodgins, P.E., environmental administrator in the city’s Stormwater Management Dept. “We held a competitive bidding process with a dozen vendors and selected Zonar because its Ground Traffic Control solution was already collecting specialized data, and it has the ability to meet our unique mapping requirements.” Stormwater Management is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the stormwater drainage systems throughout the city. This includes more than 18,000 catch basins. The department operates about 40 vehicles, including 20 dump trucks, three vacuum trucks, large and small crew units, and a number of tractors and mowers. Today, Zonar’s electronic fleet

Go to

management system, including HD-GPS and Ground Traffic Control, is in use by the Stormwater Management operation. “We supplied Zonar with geographical maps showing the location of our manholes, curb inlets, drainage ditches, and below-ground sewer pipes,” Hodgins relates. “Zonar loaded this data into its Ground Traffic Control solution and enabled it to be displayed on GPS maps so we can see details in real-time. “Another thing we’ve found very helpful with the Zonar system is the ability to monitor PTO operation on mowing equipment, and our vacuum truck units that are used to clean catch basins and pressure wash storm sewers,” Hodgins adds. “The electronic data trail is a double-check of paper records and operator log sheets and includes a complete timeline that we can use to measure and improve productivity.” The Zonar system is also being used to track garbage truck movements. “The solution plays a major role in helping ensure that our refuse collection routes are being covered effectively and finished in a timely manner,” says Dalphine Magloire, sanitation fleet manager. “We have about 150 pieces of equipment, including 30 garbage trucks and sweepers, roll-offs, and boom units to track. We also use the system to verify a trash pickup if a resident questions whether we made a stop.” “Only with a system that has the capabilities we are using in the Zonar solution are we able to combine our department maps with GPS maps to replace labor-intensive processes with cutting-edge technology,” Hodgins adds. “This has given us powerful new insights that we are using to improve the way that the City of Savannah departments work and serve our citizens.”

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?

Tell us a bit about the organization you started.

Proper air inflation and keeping a good eye on your tires will get you the best life.

I’m the founder and president of Pure Country Livestock Assn., which is a brotherhood of truckers with old-school values. Te organization’s goal is to improve the industry’s image by helping others and by teaching. Most members are from the livestock hauling side of trucking, but we welcome any and all truckers looking to help others and improve the image of truckers. PCLA may be found on Facebook.

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? If you stock parts, which ones?

Triple C Express Owner: Jeremy Jansen Location: Alta, IA Jeremy Jansen has been a company driver with Triple C Express for nearly four years. The carrier’s primary business is relocating livestock. Jansen lives in Wayne, NE.

What is the make and model of your truck and trailer? I drive a 2013 Peterbilt 389 with a push axle pulling a four-deck Wilson spread-axle livestock trailer.

How are maintenance and minor repairs handled? Do you use an OEM shop (truck dealer or engine manufacturer shop) or an independent truck repair shop? We job out all of our maintenance to a few choice small repair shops at home that give us a fair rate. Both major and minor repairs are handled at the same locally owned shops we work with for our maintenance.

What challenges do you face with your maintenance/repair program? How do you resolve each?

I stock the parts that are generally difcult to fnd at night or over weekends. Tis way if it breaks down, I can fx it and keep rolling and keep downtime to a minimum.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer?

We replace trailers every two years for the OTR drivers. We start to look at replacing tractors when they start to nickel-and-dime us.

What are your specifcations for your trucks? We fnd what we need on the open market and customize to specifcations.

What do you have in place to ensure CSA compliance for your trucks/trailers? We check our equipment daily through our [pretrip inspections] and have the local repair shops go over it thoroughly at least once a month.

Te biggest challenge we face on the road is fnding [a shop that does] quality work in a timely fashion and at a decent rate. So, we focus on preventive maintenance to avoid as many repairs as possible needing to be done on the road.

What do you enjoy most about trucking and hauling the type of freight you do?

What do you do in regard to maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime?

Editor’s Note: The purpose of “Spotlight on an American Trucker” is to bring our readership to life by putting names and faces alongside their successes. If you know of a business that utilizes trucks in the course of doing business that you think we should feature , please send their contact information to tbrady@writeuptheroad.com.

We minimize downtime by checking things daily and monthly. We also have the shop check equipment top to bottom when we’re home.

Auxiliary lighting T he latest developments in auxiliary lighting all surround the continuous improvements in white LED technology, where new arrays are producing more light output at a lower cost, notes Brad Van Riper, senior vice president and chief technology officer at Truck-Lite. These lights, he adds, help improve the speed and function of tasks around a vehicle. Truck-Lite’s more recent auxiliary light product releases include the 8140 and 8180 work lamps. These lights are used in a range of applications, e.g., on the manifold of a tank truck to illuminate the valves as well as at locations where hoses are connected to offload product. Another example of Truck-Lite’s use of advancements in white LED technology is the perimeter lamp, designed to improve the lighting when a truck driver enters and exits the side door of a trailer. In 2013, Grote Industries, which offers the Trilliant line of LED work lights, devised a new method of describing the light emitted by white LED lamps. According to the company, the RIE Light Output Measurement System reflects the actual way an LED lamp behaves. A typical LED lamp is brightest when it is first turned on; then as it warms up, it emits less light. The RIE rating system that Grote uses for its white LED work lamps provides three measurements. “R” equals the maximum amount of lumens that each LED diode can produce times the number of diodes. “I” stands for the light output that is produced the instant the lamp is turned on. “E” stands for the effective light output that a lamp produces when it stabilizes after about 30 min. Mark Assenmacher, director of marketing at Peterson Manufacturing, says the company’s new 359 Series surface-mount white interior lights represent “a dramatic improvement over traditional recessed ceiling dome lights.” Designed with the company’s Great White LEDs, 6-, 12- and 18-in.-long lights are included in the 359 Series. “These lights offer advantages over traditional lamps used in cargo-carrying vehicles,” Assenmacher explains. “Instead of creating a hot spot directly under a recessed light, bar lights located strategically around a vehicle or trailer interior provide evenly distributed

White light technology is lowering the cost of lighting

Go to

light and eliminate shadowy corners.” Peterson has also extended its LumenX LED line with 4-in. Round Strobe and 6-in. Oval Strobe lights for use as directional flashing warning devices on Class 1 and 2 emergency, maintenance and service vehicles. The strobes feature white-diode LEDs and a lens design that cuts out dead zones regardless of viewing angle. Super Bright LEDs offers the 360 deg. LED Emergency Light Bar Amber hexagonal strobe light. The beacon is used for emergency, warning and hazard lighting on public safety, roadside assistance, waste removal, tow, utility and DOT vehicles. With 10 x 3 LED light heads, the permanent mount light provides 360-deg. visibility. The Phillips Industries Permalite XB LED dome lamp for use inside a trailer features a 175-deg. light spread. Designed for extreme temperatures ranging from -40 to 140 deg. F, the lights have an impact-resistant, low-profile polycarbonate housing and universal mounting holes. New from Optronics is the 31/4-in. round Opti-Brite auxiliary lamp. The recent addition to the Opti-Brite family joins the 2-in. square product introduced within the last year. The new lamp has a polycarbonate lens, die cast aluminum housing, powder coat finish, and stainless steel mounting hardware. According to Optronics, when designing auxiliary lamps, the objective is to deliver lights that are compact so they can fit almost anywhere and in more applications. In addition, with greater power for more overall illumination capability and higher efficiency, the latest auxiliary lights on the market provide fleets with greater value at a lower price.

UNTREATED DPF FRONT

TREATED DPF FRONT

LOWER YOUR COSTS OF DPF OWNERSHIP TIRED OF FIGHTING DPF REGENERATION ISSUES?

UNTREATED DPF OUTLET

There’s a simple and cost-effective solution! Independent tests prove soot production in the

TREATED DPF OUTLET

combustion chamber is reduced by 60% or more when using EnerBurn. EnerBurn will allow your diesel engine to burn the fuel more completely, thereby reducing soot production. Because EnerBurn lowers the burn temperature of carbon (soot), your DPF will automatically regenerate as the flter was designed to do. Your DPF will clean itself “on the go” keeping your truck or bus in the feld and out of the dealership for flter service. If you want to keep more money in your business by reducing DPF maintenance expenses and fuel costs, you need EnerBurn.
