An eye on
WASHINGTON by Kevin Jones
AS PART OF OUR ONGOING REDESIGN of American Trucker and our new website, readers will notice a new page this month, Washington Update.
Simply, based on the high trafic counts that posts regarding trucking rules, regulations and legislation get on AmericanTrucker.com, we’ll be including some of that coverage here as well. The leading transportation issue currently on Capitol Hill is the debate over a new, long-term federal funding plan, generally called the highway bill. Basically, both Republican and Democrats, along with almost everyone involved in moving freight on the road, want to see something done to improve and expand the highway system. The problem is that the federal tax on a gallon of gasoline or diesel hasn’t changed since Bill Clinton was in the White House—and that money no longer keeps up with the increasing cost of road construction. But everyone seems to have a diferent idea about how to make up the diference.
The current highway bill, extended twice since last September, is set to expire May

Between FMCSA and Congress, truckers need to keep an eye on Washington page: an updated schedule of civil penalties for violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations. These take effect June 2, and some increases are substantial. The penalty for a driver who violates an out-of-service order is about to get $1,000 more expensive, for example, rising from $2,100 to $3,100. (See page 24 for the complete list.) And speaking of regulations, also coming in June is the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 28th annual International Roadcheck, billed as the
provincial and federal inspectors will average nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected every minute in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. So truckers, triple-check those straps and chains—and buckle up while you’re at it. It’s that time of the year. As always, be safe.

06 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2015
Touring the show by Jim Mele
For anyone in the trucking industry, it’s the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS), not the return of the robin, that signals the beginning of spring. And while the weather in Louisville this year didn’t feel very spring-like, the record crowd walking around the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center was in a celebratory mood as a warming economy has returned profitable and abundant freight, not to mention some of the strongest truck sales in nearly a decade. While the venue hasn’t changed since MATS first opened its doors back in March of 1972, the 2015 version of the show would have been unimaginable to the 4,000 who attended that first event with its 83 exhibits. This year almost 82,000 people from all 50 states and 74 countries roamed through 1.2 million sq. f. of exhibit space spread out among four renovated and new halls, as well as outside in adjacent parking lots. The 1,064 exhibits themselves ranged from multimillion-dollar-themed displays from all the major truck manufacturers to simple tabletops with
some hopeful inventor’s latest innovation or a great deal on polish. Also as usual, this year’s edition of MATS served as trucking’s showcase for introducing new products and services. The work of American Trucker’s editorial team offers both extensive coverage of what’s new and reports on the hot topics of discussion among those in the trucking community. On the product front, most of the news centered around two topics: fuel economy and safety. With truck and trailer makers gearing up to meet the next step in federal greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy standards in 2017, there were aerodynamic refinements, powertrain changes, and electronic advancements from nearly all of the manufacturers. Advanced safety systems grabbed much attention, not only promising an immediate improvement in performance but also pointing the way to the near future of self-driving vehicles. All in all, MATS was a most welcome rite of spring in 2015.

General Tire celebrates 100 years with new lineup General Tire celebrated its centennial at the Mid-America Trucking Show and, along with the birthday cake in the booth, journalists were treated to the launch of three new highway truck tires.
Kenworth ICON 900: A “trucker’s truck” Two items topped the list of Kenworth Truck’s product introductions at this year’s Mid-America Trucking Show: a new 76-in. midroof sleeper package for the OEM’s T680 and T880 models due to go into full production this fall, and the limited edition ICON 900 based of the company’s W900L tractor.
• Predictive cruise control, a system that combines cruise control with GPS to provide “intelligent autopilot” to manage vehicle speed.
Preston Feight, Kenworth’s general manager, said that the 76-in. midroof sleeper is 100 lbs. lighter than the highroof sleeper package and is “optimized” to provide a more aerodynamic profile specifically for tanker and flatbed operators, a profile that can ofer such operators up to a 5% boost in fuel economy.
• Driver performance assistant, a built-in virtual driver’s coach to improve fuel economy.
Kenworth expects to sell between 1,000 and 1,500 of the limited edition ICON 900 “trucker’s truck,” which is being ofered with the option of either a 72- or 86-in. sleeper and engine choices up to 600 hp. The company said that due to its other aerodynamic oferings, it has enough greenhouse gas credits available to ofer the less-than-aerodynamic ICON 900. Other items Kenworth highlighted at MATS this year include:

• Driver shift aid, available on Kenworth models equipped with MX-13 engines with manual transmissions.
• TruckTech+ with real-time vehicle health monitoring provided by PeopleNet for the MX-13 engine. • NAV+ HD next-generation, multifunctional communication and entertainment system. • Inverter/charger improvements with an enhanced 1,800-watt inverter that provides drivers with the convenience of AC power in the sleeper. • Idle management system auto start and stop with a battery-based auxiliary power unit system designed to keep the cab and sleeper comfortable for up to 10 hours. www.kenworth.com
“General Tire is an American tire brand built for durability,” said Alex Chmiel, marketing director-CVT the Americas, for parent company Continental. “We’re putting an all-new emphasis on General Tire for the independent owner-operator and small fleets. We feel that the tagline of ‘Anywhere is possible’ hits with our market.” The purpose of the marketing push is to give small trucking businesses, which are not large enough for national accounts with a major tire brand, access to “the best performing tire in the marketplace at a price that’s afordable,” he added. A company survey revealed that these smaller operators want dependability and consistent product availability in their tires, rather than the latest and greatest in tire technology. The new product lineup is led by the General HS, a long-haul steer tire featuring an enhanced tread design and fuel-efficient compounding. The five-rib tread pattern promotes even wear and high removal mileage. The launch of the new General HS tire will begin in May. www.generaltiretruck.com

“The trucking industry is coming back in a big way,” observed Robert Woodall, assistant general manager for Peterbilt Motors, as he took the stage at the annual Peterbilt press luncheon at MATS. [Last year] was the best year for the industry since 2006 and, except for the driver shortage, 2015 is shaping up to be a strong year for truck sales overall, he said. Underpinning the company’s optimism for the year ahead is a long lineup of new products and services as well as enhancements to existing oferings, including a new 58-in. sleeper for the Model 579, a new set-forward axle configuration for the Model 567, the debut of Predictive Cruise technology, and the launch of the Smart LINQ remote diagnostics system. Peterbilt also introduced the next generation of its
in-dash SmartNav infotainment system and the expansion of its premium interior oferings. The company also shared news that the Model 579 EPIQ package is producing fuel eficiency gains of up to 14%. The advanced vehicle incorporates design elements from the SuperTruck project, which achieved 10.7 mpg in field testing. Peterbilt’s new Predictive Cruise technology is designed to automatically optimize engine and transmission operation when in cruise control for maximum fuel economy. So-called “neutral coasting” utilizes the truck’s momentum to save fuel and engages the engine brake to manage downhill speeds. Cruising speed is maintained as the vehicle continues onto level terrain. www.peterbilt.com

Volvo highlights lineup of XE powertrain packages Volvo Trucks showcased its latest fuel eficiency improvements, including a new XE (eXceptional Efficiency) powertrain package for linehaul applications.
All told, the model year 2016 aerodynamic and underhood improvements increase fuel eficiency by up to 3.5% depending on model, the company said.
Like Volvo’s other XE packages, XE super direct drive improves fuel eficiency by lowering engine rpm at a given vehicle speed, a concept Volvo calls “downspeeding.” By using a direct drive Volvo I-Shif automated manual transmission, the new package offers additional fuel eficiency benefits compared with conventional direct drive transmissions.
XE super direct drive, which will be available for order midyear, is designed for linehaul applications that operate in top gear at a gross combination weight rating of 80,000 lbs. or less with maximum engine torque of 1,850 lbs.-f. Volvo also introduced Adaptive Loading, a new 6x2 liftable forward axle that automatically adjusts to load
weight changes and ofers 4x2 operation under certain conditions. Key benefits of Adaptive Loading include greater fuel eficiency, improved traction, lower maintenance costs, and increased driver productivity, the company said. In other news, Volvo announced that its Volvo Remote Diagnostics service has expanded to monitor critical fault codes on the Volvo I-Shif automated manual transmission. www.volvotrucks.com
Mack announces Load Logic and 6x2 liftable pusher axle tors in either axle back or axle forward configurations and in either 6x4 or 6x4 tandem setups, Horton said Load Logic can boost fuel economy by 2% for regional, bulk and tanker fleets.
Mack Trucks is ofering a new “Load Logic” function for its mDrive automated manual transmission (AMT) and a 6x2 lifable pusher axle option for its Pinnacle highway tractor as part of its ongoing efort to improve component integration for its products. Roy Horton, Mack’s director of product marketing, said that Load Logic integrates an advanced sensor in the rear suspension with the mDrive AMT to basically create two driveline configurations within one powertrain package. As a result, when a fully loaded trailer is detected, mDrive operates as a direct drive transmission and “locks out”

12th gear for increased performance and pulling power. When an empty trailer is detected, however, the AMT automatically switches to overdrive, enabling 12th gear to lower cruise rpm and maximize fuel eficiency. Available on Mack’s Super Econodyne-spec’d Pinnacle highway trac-
The 6x2 with lifable pusher axle package weighs 375 to 400 lbs. less than a full 6x4 package. By automatically determining payload via sensors located in the rear suspension, it either lifs or lowers the foremost rear axle. Horton noted that when an empty load is detected, the axle lifs and allows the tractor to operate as a 4x2 for less drag, better fuel eficiency, and reduced tire wear. www.macktrucks.com

Remote diagnostics free on Internationals The remote diagnostics system OnCommand Connection (OCC) will be offered as a standard no-charge option on all new International trucks starting in July. Navistar oficials also announced that the OEM would ofer credits to new truck buyers to cover the cost of basic telematics hardware and data service. Owners of 2007 and newer Internationals can also add OCC remote diagnostics free of charge through local dealers. OCC is an open architecture remote diagnostics system that can integrate with 11 major telematics service pro-
viders, according to the company. The company also announced the ProStar ES fuel-eficient package is available with either Cummins’ ISX15 or Navistar’s proprietary 13L engine (N13). The Eaton-Cummins SmartAdvantage powertrain combination, which pairs the Cummins ISX15 with the Eaton Fuller Advantage automated manual transmission, is also available. TheProStar ES with an ISX15 features Cummins’ ADEPT technology, which includes SmartTorque2 and SmartCoast. ADEPT is a suite of advanced electronic features for the ISX15 that
DTNA SuperTruck shows that 12 mpg is possible
Derek Rotz, DTNA’s principal investigator for the SuperTruck project, pointed to a host of near-term and future technologies incorporated into the vehicle,
Cummins’ SmartCoast enables the engine and transmission to work together more efectively to improve eficiency while coasting. On moderate downhill grades, the driveline is disengaged to allow the engine to return to idle and reduce drag from the powertrain on the vehicle. This conserves momentum and improves fuel economy. Cummins’ ADEPT and SmartCoast are also available on non-ES ProStar models powered by the Cummins ISX15. The ProStar ES with N13 includes enhanced engine controls and a “neutral coast” feature that shifs the transmission to neutral when a driver backs of the accelerator. www.internationaltrucks.com
tive capabilities of intelligent powertrain management components such as preloaded 3D digital maps to control shifing and coasting to boost vehicle eficiency and fuel economy. One instance of that “balancing act” at work is the active “grille shutter,” which opens at low speeds to provide more air to cool the engine but closes at highway speeds to improve the tractor’s aerodynamic profile.
Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) showed off the results of its involvement in the Dept. of Energy’s SuperTruck program: a tractor that gets 12.2 mpg, improves freight eficiency 115%, and achieves 50.2% engine brake thermal eficiency. Diane Hames, DTNA’s general manager of marketing and strategy, noted that the Freightliner-badged SuperTruck represents the culmination of five year’s work, funded by a $40 million DOE grant and $40 million from the OEM.

Rotz added that DTNA also looked at improving tractor and trailer integration, an efort that provided two-thirds of the project’s freight eficiency gains. Blackburn named Highway Hero Clinton Blackburn (center) is congratulated by Gary Medalis, marketing director of Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems, after being named the 2015 Goodyear Highway Hero winner. He is fanked by runners up David Fredericksen (left) and Mack Gufey (right) along with Spencer County Sherrif Darrell Herndon.
The truck driver and the law enforcement oficer he saved from being strangled by a prisoner took center stage during a ceremony at the Mid-America Trucking Show as Clinton Blackburn of Morehead, KY, was named the 32nd Goodyear Highway Hero award winner. Blackburn was driving near Elizabethtown, KY, last year when he observed a sherif’s cruiser lurch toward the highway median and abruptly stop. He pulled up to investigate and noticed that the car’s driver side door was open. Inside, Spencer County jailer Darrell Herndon was being strangled by a prisoner who was leaning over the back seat.
Blackburn reached into the vehicle and began struggling with the prisoner in an efort to free Herndon, who was immobilized by his seat belt. During the melee, the prisoner pulled Herndon’s gun from its holster. Blackburn immediately grabbed the barrel of the gun and pointed it toward the car’s dashboard.

Meanwhile, Herndon released his seat belt and rolled out of the car. The prisoner then tried to point the gun at Blackburn, who turned the weapon around and aimed it at the prisoner. Pointing the gun at the prisoner, Blackburn backed away from the car. Realizing that the cruiser’s keys were still in the ignition, the prisoner tried to start the car and drive away. Working together, Blackburn and Herndon subdued him.

BUSINESS OF TRUCKING
What’s your chain of command?
Without proper direction, employees can lose focus and morale
ANY BUSINESS, REGARDLESS OF SIZE, requires a well-structured chain of command to succeed. Without a proper hierarchy, the result is ofentimes chaos, especially during an emergency or in a tough business environment.
The chain of command in a trucking company corresponds to the level of authority necessary to complete the tasks within the organization. This begins with the business owner and then goes down the chain to the truckers, who are the carrier’s front line. COMPANY HIERARCHY The chain of command policy establishes a motor carrier’s hierarchy. Employees need to know who they report to and what their responsibilities are.
As the business owner, you occupy the top position in the company’s command structure. The operations director, safety director, and sales director report directly to you. Supervisors report to their respective directors (also known as department heads).
by Tim Brady, Business Editor
16 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2015

“He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.”
—Niccolo Machiavelli, 16th century Italian writer
For example, the fleet supervisor, who reports to the operations director, supervises the driver managers and dispatchers. They, in turn, manage the company’s truck drivers.
Each company establishes its own organizational structure based on size and needs, i.e., the chain of command. For an organization to function and to avoid chaos, all employees must recognize the structure of the company’s hierarchy when following a chain of command. HOW DOES THE CHAIN OF COMMAND WORK? Each person is responsible for a specific area of the carrier’s business.
As an example, the fleet supervisor finds the next load; develops the instructions for that load; and then sends that information to the driver manager, who determines which truck is assigned the load. He or she also puts money on the driver’s fuel card. The driver manager then sends it to the dispatcher, who communicates to the truck driver the details pertaining to load pickup and delivery. Upper management employees establish the high-level direction the company takes. And they do this through executive communication with you, the company’s owner, or a general manager.
CREATING EFFICIENCY THROUGH A CHAIN OF COMMAND By establishing a strong chain of command, you’ll create more efficiency when reporting problems or communicating with employees or contract truckers.
For example, drivers must report any and all problems to the dispatcher. If a driver’s truck has a tire blowout, the dispatcher arranges for a tire repair truck. If there’s a pickup or delivery delay, the dispatcher is the first to be called. Escalation to the next management level or higher should only occur if the situation is unusual, or far more serious, i.e., if the blowout caused the truck to be in an accident or in a dangerous situation that could have disastrous results.
These are the only times you, the owner, need to be notified at the time of the incident or directly involved in its resolution. The dispatcher would then generate a report of the tire blowout, which would be filed and then scrutinized by the others above in the chain of command at a weekly or monthly business and incident review meeting. THE ART OF MANAGEMENT Carefully screen the employees to whom you’re going to delegate the
authority to make crucial decisions for your company. Delegate the day-to-day tasks and supervisory responsibilities to trusted employees. Not delegating authority is a sure way to stagnate the growth of your company. As the carrier grows, the more ‘hats’ (delegated responsibilities) you can put on other heads, the more easily and quickly you’ll grow your small trucking company to a larger, more prosperous one. KEEP IT SIMPLE Think simplicity when developing your company’s chain of command. If it’s too complicated, employees and contractors may ignore the chain of command, and that may afect the morale of supervisors and managers.
On the other hand, if the chain of command is too complex that it only serves to isolate you from direct contact with employees, morale will sufer. Look to strike a balance between the two. Trucking companies without a clear chain of command create an atmosphere of chaos, which then generates uncertainty and can lead to low morale. Poor morale can lead to higher driver and employee turnover, which lowers productivity and revenue. And the constant cost of having to hire replacements for those who have quit impacts a carrier’s bottom line. Build a good chain of command based on responsibilities and abilities—then delegate. It’s your high road to success.

Most of the Secretary of Labor’s case was based on the premise that the employee did not understand the concept of “trajectory.” According to the OSHA definition, trajectory is “any path or route that a rim wheel component may travel during an explosive separation, or the sudden release of the pressurized air, or an area

assembly. Hundreds of thousands of truck drivers and maintenance technicians engage in the practice of inflating truck tires every day. In most instances, they are just “topping them of” by adding a few pounds of pressure. As long as the existing pressure in the tire is above 80% of the recommended inflation, there shouldn’t be any major concerns; however, if the existing pressure is less than 80% of the recommended inflation, the risk of a zipper rupture is increased.
OSHA-compliant inflation devices and remain outside the trajectory area are at minimal risk. The most unfortunate fact is that many employees are forced into the trajectory because they don’t have a clip-on air chuck or an extension hose that is long enough. Recognizing the hazard is only half the battle. Employees need to know what to look for and what to listen for because the bulges in the sidewall and popping sounds are clear signs of a zipper rupture. The other half of the battle is to use the proper equipment and stand even with the tread where the rim components or blast of air do not pose a risk. I’ve been telling students for decades that if you can read the sidewall of the tire during inflation, then you are placing yourself in the trajectory.

Specialty trailers
FINDING THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB by Kevin Jones, Editor
Versatility is key to making good investments in new equipment
SO MANY CHOICES, SO LITTLE OPERATING MARGIN. Specialty trailer manufacturers continue to innovate and impress, based on a selection of new product oferings out this spring. But new technologies come at a price: How’s a buyer to decide what is worth the investment, or choose between competing oferings?
Dan Giles, the new chairman of the board of the Truck Trailer
20 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2015
Manufacturers Assn., tells American Trucker that, despite all the bells and whistles now available on specialized equipment, the fundamentals haven’t changed. “The common themes are still the common themes: cost eficiency, weight reduction, reliability, and, where possible and economical, new technologies,” said Giles, vice president at Fontaine Military Products.
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
Prior to moving to the military unit, he’d been director of engineering and the engineering manager responsible for trailer designs for Fontaine Trailer, the largest flatbed builder in the world—so he should have a pretty good idea about trends. As to adopting new technology, Giles points to central tire inflation systems as an example of technology that went from an exotic option to commonplace in the industry over the past 10 years. And the call for weight reduction in commercial vehicles “will never cease,” he explains. For every extra pound added to the weight of tractors to meet government regulations, trailers are expected to make up the diference. That’s led to the growing use of aluminum instead of steel—and “inherently” higher costs. In heavy-haul, versatility has become important. He points to flatbeds that incorporate twist locks, along with new aluminum products. To ofset the higher costs of light-butstrong materials, trailer makers must develop “novel, innovative” production processes. Fontaine, he notes, has adopted “friction-stir welding” tech-
nology from the aircraft industry— and even created a unit to provide the technology to other manufacturers so they could benefit from the process. But the real shif, as Giles sees it, has not been in the growing sophistication of trailers so much as in the growing sophistication of customers. Just because the latest and greatest technologies are available doesn’t mean everyone can or should invest in them. The industry still has manufacturers that focus on basic, economical models, while other trailer builders focus on high-end performance. The key is to understand the payback over the working life of a piece of equipment. “A lot of buyers today are becoming more in tune with that,” Giles said. “Buyers are becoming more keenly [aware] of the long-term investment and not just thinking short term.” So the total cost of ownership mantra that truck makers have marketed so heavily has spilled over into the trailer market. But with so many options, how does a specialty trailer buyer decide?
VISIT AMERICANTRUCKER.COM FOR USED EQUIPMENT LISTINGS.
“I’ve been in the commercial industry 25 years, and first and foremost, buyers need to know their application—what they’re going to use the product for—and buy equipment that will meet their requirements,” Giles says. “That’s the truck and the trailer. It’s load securement; it’s ABS. Trailer dimensions. Tractor horsepower and torque and speed ratios. Tires. Buyers are now thinking about all this stuf.” Looking ahead, Giles notes that new government regulations have yet to hit the specialty market the way aerodynamics has impacted the van market, but buyers do need to think ahead when making purchases of trucks and trailers. “We don’t really want the government forcing one size fits all on everybody,” he added. “It just doesn’t work that way.” Looking ahead, Giles suggests specialty trailer buyers will be even more accepting of new technology because it will pay of in the long run. “A lot of your higher-end trailer manufacturers, like truck manufacturers,

are continuing to work on ultimate materials, ultimate assembly methodologies,” he said. “You’re going to see a continued focus on light weight, on durability, low maintenance, and return on investment—especially on new technologies that will save money over time.” And as American Trucker discovered recently on the exhibit floors of the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) and the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) annual meeting, Giles’s assessment is spot on. XL SPECIALIZED TRAILERS Heavy-haul trailer maker XL Specialized Trailers celebrated its 20th anniversary during MATS, launching four new trailers. “Our company was built on innovation and we pride ourselves in finding new solutions for our customers, so it is very fitting that as we celebrate 20 years in business, we are introducing many new products at the show,” said Steve Fairbanks, president and CEO. On display at MATS were several new products, including the XL 60 Hydraulic Detachable Mini-Deck Trailer, the XL 80 Flat Deck Extendable Trailer (FDE), XL 110 Low-Profile Hydraulic Detachable Gooseneck (HDG), XL 140 Hydraulic Detachable Extendable (HDE), and XL Single Axle Power Booster.

TALBERT MANUFACTURING Five new trailer models were shown at MATS by Talbert Manufacturing. Each of the new Traveling Axle (TA) Series models will boost the hauling capacity by 5 tons over the models they replace, Talbert said. Three of the new trailer models—the 4048TA, 4050TA and 4053TA— have a 40-ton hauling capacity, and the new 5548TA and 5553TA trailer models haul as much as 55 tons. The TA Series trailers feature a state-ofthe-art, 36-in. loaded deck height. This low deck height provides additional clearance for bridges and tunnels when transporting tall equipment, the company noted. Each of the trailers feature Talbert’s signature piggyback cylinder, now with a larger diameter for faster axle travel. Loading is made easier with a 7-deg. load angle. Talbert’s standard equipment for the series includes
a 15,000-lb. planetary winch with a two-function, wireless remote. The TA Series trailers come standard with double keyhole tie-down slots on top of the outside beams and recessed in the center of the main deck. Talbert Manufacturing: www.talbertmfg.com TRAIL KING Trail King ofered an advance look at its new Steel End Dump at MATS. According to the company, the trailer is a project that has been in consideration over the past few years, and it is now being reintroduced into the product line. The TKSHR32 Steel End Dump is designed to haul sand, gravel, demolition or rip rap. It features abrasion-resistant steel, an inverted-angle designed top rail, and a high lif tailgate. Improved stability and a maximized footprint are achieved with a lower center of gravity,
The next-generation XL Single Axle Power Booster is designed specifically for a one-axle application booster with a lighter weight of around 2,750 lbs., as well as additional operator-friendly features. It is attached to the rear of a lowboy trailer with a 14f ., 1-in. spread between the trailer’s last axle and the booster’s axle. XL Specialized Trailers: www.xlspecializedtrailer.com

and the ability to haul increased payload is a result of the 24-in. flat floor structural design. The TKSHR32’s design is not only suited for a wide range of cargo applications, but for each scenario it is designed to allow ease of operation plus superior loading and unloading through the dump cycle. “Our customers heavily rely on Trail King’s expert engineering knowledge and capabilities, as well as manufacturing’s careful analysis, to provide premium performance and innovative operating eficiencies in all aspects of the business,” said Rick Farris, vice president of sales and marketing. Trail King: www.trailking.com FAYMONVILLE Faymonville is introducing a new specialty trailer for the North American heavy-haul market. The HighwayMax is an extendable on-road heavy-haul trailer with nine hydraulically steered pendulum axles and a technical payload of 260,000 lbs. The double extendable highway
multi-axle trailer fully complies with national regulations in respect to axle group dimensions, allowing a maximum payload, the company said. The trailer can be easily retracted to attain a truck/trailer length not to exceed 90 f., eliminating the need for escorts in most of the United States and Canada, the company says. The HighwayMax has a low tare weight of approximately 62,500 lbs. with a loading platform that can be extended up to 89 f., 2 in. Faymonville said the extremely strong and torsion stif frame includes multiple lashing rings and load securement points. The trailer is constructed of a fully metalized frame that ensures corrosion protection. Faymonville: www.faymonville.com GALBREATH Galbreath has rolled out a new lightweight roll-of trailer ofering a shorter overall length for improved maneuverability. The M6 250 Series weighs just 15,650 lbs. yet provides a gross vehicle weight rating of 72,500
The M6 250 Series roll-off trailer is available in outside rail (OR), extendable tail (EX), inside/outside rail (IO), and deadlif (HH) configurations. Two telescoping lif cylinders provide greater stability when lifting heavy loads. Plus, its lower trailer height accommodates taller containers than standard trailers, the company says. Galbreath: www.galbreathproducts.com SILVER EAGLE MANUFACTURING The new patented “T-Dolly” from Silver Eagle Manufacturing displayed at TMC featured an automated “telescoping” tongue that will automatically deploy at highway speeds of 45 mph and higher to close gaps between combination trailers for improved fuel economy. Gary Gaussoin, Silver Eagle’s president, explained that the “only reason” to have a large gap between combination trailers is to make sharp turns at low speeds. Closing the gap between combination trailers at highway speeds helps reduce aerodynamic drag, providing a fuel eficiency boost of 2.5% to 3.5%, according to TMC Type IV modified fuel tests as well as field trials Silver Eagle conducted with UPS. The dolly’s connection to the vehicle’s ABS system allows it to calculate road speed, closing the gap automatically at 45 mph and above while opening it back up at 40 mph and below. This totally shuts of the dolly’s telescoping system at 5 mph and below. Silver Eagle Manufacturing: www. silvereaglemanufacturing.com.

WASHINGTON UPDATE
FMCSA posts increases in fines; changes take effect June 2 The penalty for a driver who violates an out-of-service order is about to get $1,000 more expensive, and that’s just one example of a new civil penalty schedule for violations of federal trucking regulations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently published the adjusted schedule in the Federal Register. The inflation-based increases are the first since 2007 for many of the viola-
tions, and some have not been changed since 2003, the notice says. Other changes to the civil penalties were mandated by Congress in MAP-21, the federal highway spending package passed in 2012. The changes take efect June 2. In passing the law requiring the inflation adjustments, Congress said that increasing penalties over time will deter

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems OPERATION
Test fleet of 30 power units and 30 pieces of towable equipment—from dollies to flatbeds, dry vans and tanker trailers
PROBLEM From the perspective of commercial vehicle engineers, T.J. Thomas will tell you testing and evaluation represent two very diferent philosophies when it comes to preparing technology for the real world. “When we talk about testing, we’re talking about pushing the boundaries of what a particular technology is capable of; going to the extremes, if you will,” he says. That’s why Bendix relies on its own test vehicle fleet, which it operates on closed courses. “But evaluation is a very diferent practice,” Thomas stresses. “When we provide technology to customers—like our electronic stability program (ESP)—and ask them to evaluate it, that means running it in a normal operating environment and seeing if drivers and technicians notice anything out of the ordinary occurring.” He says Bendix is ofen focused on finding maintenance-related issues that might affect the system’s overall performance, especially in the case of evaluations for ESP. “For us, it all comes down to drivability,” Thomas explains. “It’s very, very important that we get the driver to agree with us
26 AMERICAN TRUCKER / MAY 2015
that ESP should be on the vehicle. That means we’ve got to make sure there are none-to-few false activations or alerts and that the system doesn’t affect the normal driving feel of their vehicles.”
SOLUTION Based on its test fleet and customer evaluation data, Bendix noted that maintenance of the sensor array controlling its ESP technology, also known as electronic stability control (ESC), is critical.
front end has been altered, or the vehicle has been realigned, the ESP’s steering angle sensor will need to be recalibrated. “Similarly, if a vehicle’s tire size changes, the ESP will need to be updated with the new tire values through its diagnostic support sofware,” he adds. “The specific stability system maker or vehicle manufacturer should be consulted in the case of more significant modifications such as changing the wheel base or installing or moving an axle.”
“It uses a number of sensors to address a tractor’s roll and directional stability as well as measuring driver intent and vehicle direction,” Thomas notes. “The sensors and controls at the heart of an ESC system require little or no routine maintenance. Drivers and technicians should familiarize themselves with the system’s service data sheets so they know where to turn for explanations of trouble codes and diagnostic tools.”
ESC is also a key component with collision mitigation technology like the Bendix Wingman system, he adds.
In Bendix’s case, that information is found within its ACom diagnostics software. “The physical components of an ESC system need attention only if certain aspects of the vehicle itself have changed,” he points out. “For example, if new steering system components are installed, the
Yet to function properly, the radar needs a clear view of the road ahead. It’s important to pay close attention to the radar sensor during vehicle pretrip inspections to ensure that the system’s “field of view” is free of debris and other obstructions.
“Our Wingman package is built on the foundation of ESC,” Thomas explains. “This type of system uses a radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle to deliver both warnings and active interventions that can help drivers potentially avoid rear-end collisions, or at least help reduce their severity.”

AERODYNAMICS EARLIER THIS YEAR, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized its SmartWay Technology Program to include trailer aerodynamic equipment verification. Designed to allow fleets to better identify trailer equipment with demonstrated fuel saving capability, and to ofer manufacturers more testing flexibility, EPA replaced device-based categories with performance thresholds of 1%, 4%, 5% and 9% or more fuel savings over traditional trailers.
EPA also announced a new classification for 53-f. dry van or refrigerated trailers in long-haul operations equipped with a higher-level of verified aerodynamic devices. A SmartWay Elite trailer can save 10% or more in fuel over traditional trail-
comparison and allow more new products to come onto the market that will meet SmartWay’s Elite aerodynamic technology grouping.” “It’s generally accepted that trailer side skirts are effective for fuel savings,” notes Bob Montgomery, vice president of Stemco ITMS group, which recently acquired ATDynamics Inc. and now ofers the ATDynamics TrailerTail and EcoSkirt. “We’re seeing fleets question rear drag technologies, and we speculate that it shouldn’t be long before the data on those devices is so overwhelming that fleets can’t delay deploying them any longer.” Trailer manufacturer Wabash Nation-
New SmartWay certifications show trailer fuel savings ers, with at least 9% of the fuel savings resulting from reducing wind drag with a combination of two or more EPA-verified aerodynamic devices, including side skirts, tails and gap reducers.
“The new EPA technology verification testing options take out a lot of the variables,” says Tom Gerst, design engineer at Fleet Engineers, the maker of Aeroflaps and Aerosaver side skirts. “Wind tunnel, coast down and computational fluid dynamic testing provide an exact

al recently introduced the AeroFin tail device, which deploys and retracts automatically with swing door operation; the Ventix DRS drag reduction system of segmented panels, which is used to manage airflow along the length of the trailer; and the DuraPlate AeroSkirt CX, a trailer side skirt that weighs about 25% less than its predecessor. Jim Reiman, CEO at Aerofficient, the provider of a wide range of trailer side
skirts, focuses on refrigerated trailers. “The aerodynamics of a reefer are different because the fuel tank blocks airflow beneath the trailer,” he says. “Our solution shields and directs airflow away from the refrigeration unit’s fuel tank.” Utility Trailer offers side skirts made of FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic). Among the range of trailer aerodynamic products on the market as well is the new Fleetline Aero-Line, which now includes trailer skirts, vortex generators and wheel covers. The AeroFlex Maxx is Freight Wing’s new full coverage side skirt. The latest design uses an aerodynamic geometry similar to the original Freight Wing AeroFlex to produce more fuel savings. Freight Wing also ofers a gap fairing and the Freight Wing chassis fairing, which can be clamped onto the I-beams of nearly any container chassis. The Ridge Green Wing aerodynamic trailer side skirt, according to the company, was refined in a wind tunnel to create a design that redirects turbulent air behind the tractor drive axles. Laydon Composites offers several aerodynamic trailer fairings, including the flat panel Trailerskirt, a new Trailerskirt-Wishbone model, and the Trailerskirt Classic with multi-fluted panel sections. It also provides nose fairings and a vortex stabilizer to help streamline airflow in the tractor-trailer gap.

UNTREATED DPF FRONT
TREATED DPF FRONT
LOWER YOUR COSTS OF DPF OWNERSHIP TIRED OF FIGHTING DPF REGENERATION ISSUES?
UNTREATED DPF OUTLET
There’s a simple and cost-effective solution! Independent tests prove soot production in the
TREATED DPF OUTLET
combustion chamber is reduced by 60% or more when using EnerBurn. EnerBurn will allow your diesel engine to burn the fuel more completely, thereby reducing soot production. Because EnerBurn lowers the burn temperature of carbon (soot), your DPF will automatically regenerate as the flter was designed to do. Your DPF will clean itself “on the go” keeping your truck or bus in the feld and out of the dealership for flter service. If you want to keep more money in your business by reducing DPF maintenance expenses and fuel costs, you need EnerBurn.
