Fiscal reality

Tim Brady Business Editor tbrady@writeuptheroad.com

I

It’s a grim business, building transportation policy around a shrinking pocketbook. But that’s precisely the situation faced by our country, and no matter how much we might like to deny it, the nation’s need to improve infrastructure must conform to fiscal reality. John Mica (R-FL), chairman of the House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Infrastructure is trying to come to grips with this unpleasant fact. In July, Mica announced a funding meets proposal that would provide $230 billion in surface transportation funding over financial reality six years—equating to the roughly $37 billion generated annually in fuel taxes, according to the Congressional Budget Office. “While the Senate Finance Committee has yet to make its own decision as to the level of transportation funding, they may be expected to come reluctantly to the same conclusion as their colleagues in the House,” says C. Kenneth Orski, a public policy consultant and one who has worked in the transportation field for 30 years. “Namely, that deficit financing is no longer politically feasible and, consequently, that government has to learn to live within its means.” Democrats are hotly responding that such a miserly transportation funding scheme could, in the words of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), “undermine our nation’s long-term economic competitiveness.” The nation’s nearly $15 trillion in debt is the dark cloud that is dampening many funding initiatives. And it’s that reality that Mica’s proposal is tackling head on. AT

ccording to Halifax-based TruckWeight, its next-generation Smart Scale system features an improved handheld receiver and greatly expanded memory capacity. The system is now available for trucks and tractor-trailer combinations fitted with either air-ride or mechanical suspensions. TruckWeight said the Smart Scale system features a wireless handheld receiver. The new backlit receiver features a display that’s easy to read in all lighting conditions. The added memory capacity allows the unit to store configuration data for up to 2,000 different trailers, an important feature for drop-and-hook operations. Also, battery replacement has been simplified with the addition of a large, glove-friendly, twist-cap access cover, eliminating the need for tools and small hardware in less accessible under-frame locations. The system includes a signal range

eep a close eye on what’s happening within your hauling niche. The more you know, the easier it is to stay ahead of your competition. Too many carriers concentrate on what economic events are occurring within their own particular world of trucking. Events such as fuel costs, increased tire costs, new regulations appearing on the horizon, or new competitors entering your niche market can impact your operations. And while these are important to know and track, don’t forget that what occurs in the world of your shippers can also affect your bottom line; for example, tougher regulations on a product they produce, a natural disaster that slows delivery of a vital component needed to make the items you haul, expansion of the shipper’s competitor, or the laying off of workers, indicating a slowing of manufacturing and ultimately fewer loads from that customer. There are many events outside of trucking that can influence your operation and revenue stream. It’s impossible to foretell the future, but you can have the next best thing. Track events and trends of the products you haul and the companies and individuals who manufacture, ship, receive or consume those same products. Doing this will give you a leg up on the competition. Tire pressure check

N

ew York-based AirChex Corp. has released a new tire pressure monitoring device for dual rear bus, truck, tractor or trailer tires that uses no electronics, batteries or processors and has almost no moving parts. The patented AirChex tire pressure monitoring system is a set of four pressure gauges, which slide into mounting “shoes” that permanently adhere to the wheel rim via a special 3M-produced tape. One gauge is connected to the inner tire valve and the other, positioned on the outer wheel, is connected to the outer tire. Gauges are available for 16- to 24-in. wheels and can be switched between wheels with the extra mounting shoes

provided. Inflation of the inner dual tires can be accomplished right from the triple-seal, flow-through valve of the device, according to the company. Mark Wallach, president of AirChex, said the system allows drivers to check the air pressure on tires in less than two minutes by walking around and reading the gauges. Optional plastic covers are designed to protect the gauge faces. According to Wallach, the AirChex system incorporates high-quality parts throughout, such as a stainless steel bourdon tube in the gauge rather than a copper tube to help protect the device against vibration and fatigue. It is certified as leak-proof, the company said. www.airchexcorp.com

The real key to tires

W

Whenever you say that something is “the key” to success, you immediately open yourself up to ridicule because you can always make the argument that something else is more important. You can soften it up by saying “a key” or “a major key,” but the bottom line is that a true “key” only works in one lock. You can’t use just any key or a key that looks like the key. In order to open the lock, “the key” is necessary. So fire if you disagree Inflate-through away with me. valve caps ensure valveInflate-through caps are the key to truck tire proper inflation inflation pressure maintenance. Without them, the pressure never gets checked or adjusted because it’s just too much of a hassle. Drivers will thump or kick every tire with a standard valve cap, and maintenance people will be tempted to do the same. No valve cap at all is a foolish option because the cap is technically the main seal. I can’t say I understand it, but valve manufacturers maintain that the self-sealing cap is the primary sealing mechanism for the valve stem. Without it, the valve core is exposed, which often leads to a slow leak. The first job of a valve cap is to seal the end of the valve stem and prevent air from escaping. A small rubber O-ring at the base of the cap is a sign that a valve cap is self-sealing. On truck tires, high brake temperatures require metal valve caps because the plastic versions usually melt on inner wheel positions, especially in the summer months. The second job of a valve cap is to protect the valve core from dirt and moisture. The “pin” on a valve core is connected to a tiny spring that allows air to enter the stem when depressed and prevent it from escaping when it’s relaxed. If there is debris around the

14 American Trucker/August 2011

outside of the pin, an air pressure check or adjustment may result in an air leak when the foreign material prevents the core from closing completely. Standard metal valve caps have admirably protected cores for years, but they cannot support an effective tire inflation pressure maintenance program. After 29 years in the tire business, I’ve come to the conclusion that most people are just lazy. We don’t get up to answer the phone, change the channel, or adjust the speed on the ceiling fan. And I say “we” because that was probably me last night. If something can be automated to save me time, effort or money, sign me up. I’m embracing the digital age because it gives me more chances to be lazy. If I were a fleet executive in an ideal world, all of my inflation pressures would be checked at a gate reader so a loud siren would go off in the cab until the driver addressed the low tire situation. Of course, that’s not possible without tire pressure monitoring sensors and since it could be decades before fleets go digital with their inflation pressure maintenance, the world still relies on the air gauge. Notice I didn’t say foot or tire club. The only way to know the air pressure is to use a gauge on the end of the stem. The inflate-through valve cap allows that to happen without the additional effort of removing and reinstalling the cap. It is a “no excuses” approach in every sense of the word because it doesn’t take a lot of time to check the pressure with a gauge when the proper valve cap is installed. Without inflate-through valve caps on every valve stem, fleets cannot expect a tire inflation pressure maintenance program to succeed. People are just too lazy. AT

business of trucking

A full report Driver reports can document much more than just HOS

W

ith electronic logs and EOBRs in every carrier’s future, one benefit of the technology used by many carriers to maintain their drivers’ hours of service (HOS) is the driver efficiency report. “These reports document what percentage of a driver’s daily 11 hours of available drive time is actually spent driving [and producing revenue]. Most carriers have reported that, in reality, drivers are only using 60 to 65% of their legal drive time. This means that 35 to 40% of their available drive time is wasted,” wrote Tom Kretsinger Jr., president & COO of American Central Transport, in a recent blog entry (http://blog.bigtrucktv.com/ tomkretsinger/wasted-time). For the small carrier, wasted time can really erode your bottom line, and with truck capacity as tight as it is, and getting even tighter, finding and eliminating wasted time becomes a priority. So the questions

16 American Trucker/August 2011

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

that beg to be answered are, where, when and why are these hours being wasted? To find these answers, it’s best to look within. Start by evaluating your drivers’ non-driving, non-loading/ non-unloading times listed within their 11-hour driving window and 14-hour total on-duty time per day. If it isn’t going into or out of the trailer or rolling down the highway, it’s taking money out of your pocket and your driver’s pocket, too.

THE WAITING PLACE

The No. 1 area in which your trucks and drivers are delayed and experience the greatest inefficiency is the time spent waiting to get to a dock. The driver efficiency report provides statistics to show customers how much time is wasted, and

Go to

how these delays create problems for on-time deliveries or pickups. Keep in mind that most shippers don’t understand that just paying the driver overtime isn’t an option. Unlike a manufacturing worker, it’s against the law for a trucker to go over his daily and weekly hours. With the electronic logs and the driver efficiency report, you now have the information to demonstrate how these dock delays are costing your carrier revenue, which causes higher fees for the shipper. Other areas of concern that show up on a report are engine idling time, time sitting in traffic or moving below the speed limit, or the truck sitting with the engine off. All these require further investigation as well. Engine idling reports tell you when the truck is sitting stationary, burning costly fuel and causing excessive engine wear—an undesirable, potentially expensive activity. If that idling time is in five- or ten-minute

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

increments, most likely it isn’t worth pursuing. But if it’s over an hour or longer, then it’s necessary to find the reasons for the excessive idle time. Is it because the driver needs to stay warm or keep cool? If this is the case, and it’s happening on a consistent basis, it’s time to look into APUs, shore power, or other idle-reduction technologies. If it’s due to the driver leaving the truck engine running while he/she is out of the truck, then you need to have a conversation with the driver. Be sure guidelines and incentives are in place for your truckers to encourage a reduction in idle time. Time sitting in traffic or moving below the speed limit is another possible cause of excessive idling. Tere’s not much you can do about events that can’t be anticipated, such as a traffic accident or police action. But if it’s because of rush-hour slow-

downs, construction congestion, or a traffic tie-up due to a ballgame or concert, these occurrences are known in advance. Your truck can either be routed around a major event or scheduled to drive through heavy traffic areas at less-congested times. Anticipate and reduce the impact of events and congestion on your operation’s efficiency.

ENGINE OFF, TIME WASTED

Sitting with the engine off can be another concern. Is the driver waiting to be assigned a load and is cooling his heels in a truck stop? If so, then the planning of loads has fallen short. In a tight operation, a trucker should know three or more loads into the future what and when they will be hauling. Unless a driver is on a rest period, the truck should be loading, unloading or rolling down the highway. Again, a study of the driver

efficiency report will provide all the details. Electronic logs allow you to plan loads based on the actual available hours of each trucker. With this technology, a dispatcher or driver can create “what-if ” scenarios to see how a load needs to be run to stay legal and give the trucker needed rest. It’s also very simple for the driver to do a split-sleeper berth when necessary, without making mistakes in arithmetic. It’s up to you to take the driver information provided by the electronic logs and create profitable efficiency for your carrier, and a safe driving template for your driver. Plain or F Done right, custom trucks can help win business

O

BY SEAN KILCARR, EDITOR

n the surface, at least, customizing trucks with fancy paint jobs, chrome and aluminum accents, and finely crafted oneof-a-kind interiors seems extremely gratuitous for this industry. For starters, while profits in trucking used to be measured in pennies, they are today reduced to mere percentages of pennies—meaning the price tag for all that bling cuts heavily into a fleet or owneroperators’ bottom line. Then there’s the work environment these trucks must survive in: racking up 120,000 to 150,000 mi. a year over rough roads, A skilled welder since age seven, in bad weather, Jerry Beaudoin, owner of SRS, covered in dirt, likes to do much of the fabrication grime, and cor- work on his custom trucks. “I mean, rosive ice-melting why spend $1,200 to $1,500 on a chemicals to boot. custom battery box when I can do it With all that in myself?” he explains. mind, not only does dumping some $10,000 into an eye-popping paint job or sheet metal work seem highly impractical, it borders on the suicidal, from a purely business perspective, of course. Then you meet folks like Jerry Beaudoin, owner of

18 American Trucker/August 2011

Soil Recovery Systems (SRS), or Shawn Cielke, president of Sweet Rides Logistics, and your thinking on the practicality of show trucks takes a 180 deg. turn. “I get a lot of work simply because people remember these trucks,” says Beaudoin, whose fleet of 13 trucks operates out of Southington, CT. “You’re a rock star every day you’re behind the wheel of one these trucks because no one forgets a delivery you make.”

PROOF OF COMMITMENT Cielke, an owner-operator based out of Haugan, MT, puts it even more bluntly: “I’d say my truck affects about 80% of the freight I haul,” he says. The reason Cielke feels so much of his business is related to his one-ofa-kind 2006 Kenworth W900B stems not only from the way it stands out from the other trucks on the highway, but what all the time, effort, and money he’s put into the vehicle represents in terms of service commitment to the customer. “The customer knows a truck like this won’t break down often, or at all, because by the way it looks, they know I take great care of it,” he explains. “They also know a truck like mine

ancy ?

delivering their products impresses their customers. Dock workers and yard guards take pictures of this truck; so do DOT [Dept. of Transportation] inspectors. Thus my customers get noticed in ways they’ve never been noticed before.” SRS’s Beaudoin echoes Cielke’s comments, saying he gets a lot of work simply because he operates such sharp-dressed steel. “Nobody forgets a delivery by one of his rigs,” he points out. Beaudoin adds that operating such high-class trucks also allows him to find and retain some of the best drivers in the trucking business; not only does he own and staff a fleet of 13, he’s got another 100 owner-operators signed on to haul for him as well.

WORK DETAIL Jerry Beaudoin favors what he calls “traditional” Peterbilt paint schemes for the 13 trucks he owns in his fleet, using just orange and black as his base colors, though combining them in different patterns for each vehicle.

And it’s important to note that neither Beaudoin nor Cielke haul “special freight” in the sense that they serve markets that offer a high premium for cargo services. In SRS’s case, in and around the northeastern U.S., numerous construction sites needed soil filled with chemical residues from factories and other heavy industries to be hauled away. It’s dirty, grimy, unappealing

cover story work for any trucker, yet also requires real skill in terms of operating end-dump trailers. Beaudoin thought he could do such work as well as anyone, while also bringing some major pizzazz to the business, a belief that paid off in spades for him.

A GATEWAY TO NEW BUSINESS Cielke hauls a smattering of everything, which includes a recent load of watermelons. But it’s what happens when a customer sees his truck that makes the difference, he says, pointing to the “watermelon load” as an example. “We got that load through a broker,” Cielke notes. “But when I made my delivery, the customer came running up to my truck while we were unloading, camera in hand to take photos, and wanted us to start hauling his produce direct for him. All of a sudden, I now have a chance to sign up another regular customer. That’s the advantage a ‘fancy truck’ can sometimes bring you.” “Driving a truck like this really puts a trucker in a whole new light for everyone he or she meets during the day,” stresses SRS’s Beaudoin. “That includes the customer, fellow truckers, and everyday motorists alike.” AT

Shawn Cielke (perched on the top of his truck with wife Amy), president of Sweet Rides Logistics, spent three years customizing his 2006 Kenworth W900B with what he calls “hunting camouflage designs.”

Restoring classic trucks to their former glory is the specialty of Bill Warner Jr. of Circleville, WV, who completely brought back to life a Ford LTL 9000 Aeromax after five years, about $10,000, and lots of his own elbow grease. “But this is a working truck—like all my equipment,” he says.

V&M Trucking out of Harrisonburg, VA, is another example of a company trying to keep trucking’s heritage alive. This is one of several Mack day cab tractors they’ve restored to mint condition to show off at truck shows.

The Graves family, owners of Farmer’s Oil out of Anthony, KS, constructed this one-of-a-kind 2011 Peterbilt Model 389 from a glider kit, fully restored Caterpillar C-15 diesel engine and Eaton 18-spd. manual transmission. The truck’s name? “Mama Cried.”
