w, the effort to reduce harmful exhaust pollutants from heavy of the clean air policy developed by both the states and the ast three decades—resulting in higher costs for new and used equipment alike. Now, however, a significant shift is taking place. The key to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—of which carbon dioxide (CO2) is a major focus—boils down to improving the fuel efficiency of the entire transportation Changing emissions network, Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology regulations are Forum, told me. “Reducing carbon emissions is changing the industry a direct function of reducing GHGs. You do that by burning less petroleum fuel,” he explained. “But from a GHG perspective, you are no longer looking at controlling emissions from just a diesel engine by itself. You are looking at the fuel efficiency of the entire vehicle, which includes how it’s operated.” In some ways, this is creating conflicting policies, Schaeffer noted. “We’ve spent the last two decades controlling particulate matter [PM] and oxides of nitrogen [NOx] emissions in trucking, which led to reductions in fuel economy,” he pointed out. “Now, we’re looking to control GHGs, requiring improvements in fuel economy. If we’d started with this goal first, we wouldn’t have done what we did over the last 20 years.” That’s not to say it’s all been a wasted effort, though. NOx, for example, is a far more potent GHG; a unit of NOx produces 310 times the global warming effect of one unit of CO2. Still, with such a major change in emissions policy philosophy in the offing, one can only wonder what the cost impact will be on trucking. AT

ers believe their personal draws or salaries should come from their company’s profits. Not true. Profit is the capital (money) from which you financially stabilize your operation and then reinvest those profits to grow your trucking company. Every trucking company has a list of fixed expenses that must be paid regardless of how much revenue is produced in a given period of time. The best way to plan for those ‘known’ expenses is to set money aside for when revenue is running short. And just like you do when it comes time to make those truck payments and insurance premiums, or when taxes are due, you must make sure the money is there for your salary. The only way this is going to happen is if you include this as an expense rather than choosing to take your payment from the profits, which may or may not exist month to month. Not doing so can leave you holding an empty wallet. Tim Brady’s Business of Trucking will appear in American Trucker four times in 2010: January, April, July and October. A new feature, “Trucking Insights,” will appear monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Monitor helps protect bearings W heel bearing safety has taken a step forward with a new preventive warning device from SKF Automotive Div. The wheel-end monitor mounts on the outboard side of a vehicle’s wheel and monitors vibration changes, alerting the driver of impending bearing failure. The warning also helps avoid collateral damage to adjacent components. “With the SKF wheel-end monitor, we are providing a product focused on increasing overall vehicle safety by detecting bearing defects,” said Mike Lewis, director-truck sales,

North America. Drivers or technicians can check the bearing by holding a magnet, which is included with the monitoring unit, near the monitor. A red signal indicates a potential problem, while a green indicator light lets the user know the bearing is defect-free. www.skf.com

Tracking tires for life

I

It appears that the possibility of passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags in truck tires may become reality in the near future. This technology will allow tire manufacturers to electronically establish each tire’s “birth record” for inventory, service life and warranty purposes. As an added bonus, the tags should have extra memory storage to inIt is now possible accommodate life programming er the tire is put to follow a tire’s aft into service. While most fleets would entire lifecycle unanimously agree that RFID tags are a good thing, they would also agree that the perceived benefits still do not outweigh any cost so it cannot be added to the price of the tire. This “include it at no extra cost” attitude has made it tough on the companies that manufacture truck tires. There are basically three ways that a tire manufacturer can attach an RFID tag to a tire: Build it into a patch and install it on the innerliner or outer sidewall; glue it directly to the innerliner; or cure it into the tire during the manufacturing process. The first two approaches are extremely labor-intensive so the added costs make them an unlikely long-term solution. Building the tag into the tire seems like the most obvious choice, but fleets would be amazed at how complicated the curing process is for a truck tire and how the addition of a small RFID tag and antenna can lead to big problems down the road if not done properly. Despite the numerous roadblocks and cost considerations, it appears that tire companies have finally reached the point where some of them have perfected the process and justified the costs from an internal

16 American Trucker/ r/February 2010

standpoint. It takes a lot of resources to track every tire for inventory purposes and an equal amount of money to process the warranty claims. The sad truth is that RFID tags will probably put some people out of work, but the reality is that we are at the beginning of the digital age of trucking so tires are simply the next component to go that route. Fleets will definitely be able to take advantage of the in-life programming aspects that should accompany this technology. Each tire can be assigned a unique identification number so it can easily be tracked throughout its service life. The accuracy of cost-per-mile calculations will literally improve overnight when mileage, repairs and retreads can be wirelessly attributed to each individual tire. Just tracking and accounting for the assets will be as easy as pointing a reader to the sidewall and pressing a button or two before downloading the information into a database or spreadsheet. Fortunately, steps have been taken to help ensure that the industry collectively agrees to use a common programming language and protocol for RFID tags so fleets, service providers and retreaders will not need multiple readers to accommodate different manufacturers. There is also universal agreement regarding the physical location of the tag on the tire as well. Even though the holy grail of imbedded RFID tags that also monitor tire inflation pressure still appear to be years away, the first generation of this new technology will provide numerous benefits for the tire and transportation industries. When tire assets are properly tracked and managed, fleets can take steps to lower operating costs and maximize cost per mile.

hen emissions specifications for future engines were being discussed in the late 1990s, it was difficult at the time to see beyond the pessimistic shouts of those who thought the truck world was going to come to a dead stop. With only cursory testing, owners and operators complained even before the engines were out about poor fuel economy, problems with oil and even shorter engine lives. It wasn’t as bad as fleets had feared. To be sure, these lower-emissions engines got less fuel economy and the issues of increased heat plagued these powerplants, but it wasn’t as bad as had been predicted. “The sky didn’t fall with the ’04 emissions engines,” says Terry Williams, editor of Penton’s Truck Blue Book. “It wasn’t as bad as everyone thought,” adds Darry Stuart, former chairman of the Technology and Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Assns. (ATA), whose consultancy DWS Fleet Management Services is based in Wrentham, MA. “There was talk of shorter engine life but that didn’t prove out. There was talk of accelerated iron particulates in oil samples, but that never proved itself out either.” Stuart says there was some engine life shortage but that it has been mitigated by normal maintenance “There ering of 650,000 ut that’s of things 0,000 or ne would fter that, hen you

duty diesel engines to emit no more than 0.1 grams per brake horsepower-hour (g/bhp-hr) of particulate matter, 2 g/bhp-hr oxides of nitrogen and between 0.4 and 0.5 g/bhp-hr of non-methane hydrocarbons. Even before that, in 2000, EPA issued more stringent regulations beginning with 2004 engines. The goal was to eventually reduce smog-causing emissions from diesel trucks and buses by 95% beyond then current levels. Soot emissions would be reduced by 90% beyond then current levels as well. To help meet these more stringent standards, the initial proposal also required the sulfur content of diesel fuel to be capped at 15 ppm—a 97% reduction. The first phase was considered 2004, and 2007 engines were considered the second phase of the reduced emissions plan, requiring the addition of diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems. Despite the cry from diesel makers and some truck owners about these equipment changes, the good news for used-truck buyers is that because of robust scrutiny and testing, these engines are extremely well understood. Buyers should know exactly what questions to ask and where to look for engine problems. “There’s a lot of

familiarity with the ’04 engines,” says Williams, “because fleets have had a lot of time to monkey around with them.” Indeed, in attempts to increase mileage, reduce expected wear and make sure they complied with EPA regulations, the ’04 engine may be one of the most wellstudied in recent history. “The biggest thing is EGR [exhaust gas recirculation] maintenance,” says Rick Clark, vp-sales at National Truck Protection Inc., an independent provider of warranty and service contracts to the trucking industry, headquartered in Carlstadt, NJ. “Everybody has different issues, but they all have the same overall problem—which is EGR. Any engine post Oct. 1, 2002, in general will have EGR problems and with ’04 engines almost everyone has EGR problems.” In diesel engines, EGR systems recirculate a portion of the engine’s exhaust gas back into the engine cylinders, replacing some of the excess oxygen in the pre-combustion mixture. Nitrogen oxide is produced when a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen is combined at high temperatures, so by reducing the oxygen component, nitrogen oxide is also reduced. Because diesels normally operate with more air than needed, EGR emissions reductions can be significant, especially during idling where large amounts of excess air are usually drawn.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG The downside of EGR systems is that the gas recirculated back into the cylinder introduces contaminants that increase wear because of the particles themselves and the higher heat. The particulates that are not burned in the power stroke also lead to a less efficient engine. The particulates can also increase

cover story engine oil acidity, which means that recommended oil changes become even more crucial. The increased soot also made DPFs necessary to meet the more stringent 2007 emissions regulations. One of the overriding issues of EGR engines is that of increased heat. “For the 2004 engines with EGR, your engine component wear is greater because of heat and increased soot with gases going back into the cylinder,” says Ken Eggen Jr., president of operations at Q Fix 24-Hr Truck Services, based in Louisville, KY. “Coolant can also get into the oil and that increases wear in cylinders. Where we used to get a million miles, we might get 750,000 instead. ... Decreased engine life without some rebuilt components is an absolute fact.” Eggen notes that main bearings and cam bearings also are components subject to increased wear. “We’re also seeing water pump prices skyrocketing because they’re failing rapidly.” Because more components are needed in EGR-type engines, there’s more to break down, says

Spotting potential EGR failures requires more than just a visual inspection.

Clark. “We’re seeing EGR component failures ... like EGR valves and coolers.” Because of EGR cooler leaking internally and coolant entering the engine intake as a result, Clark has recently seen hydraulic lock situations that have bent the connecting rod in at least one valve. “We’ve had two of these cases recently. They cost around $7,000 to repair.” As far as other heat-related problems, Clark has seen fan hub grease dry out in addition to belts and hoses that have deteriorated from

increased heat. “We’re also seeing more oil consumption-type jobs.”

HIDDEN TROUBLE Because belts, hoses and wiring break and deterioration are simple to determine with a visual inspection, these are not big problems for potential buyers. “With a good inspection you should see these types of issues,” says Clark. EGR failures require more work because you can’t see the problems with a visual inspection. “If you have an EGR failure, you’ll have smoke, no power and noise, a heavier noise than a miss.” These are clues, he says. Adds Stuart: “I think of EGR problems as ‘ghost’ costs as opposed to those you can touch like brakes or tires. You can touch and bend wire to see if it’s worn. You can make these inspections in five seconds. ... These types of issues have probably been addressed.” For 2007-compliant engines, DPFs bring their own hidden problems to the table. “The main issue with DPFs is internal cracking,” says Eggen. He notes that exchanging a dirty DPF for a clean one costs about $2,000. If the bore is cracked, it could cost $3,500 minimum, but you won’t know it with just a cursory visual inspection.

cover story

Pricing of trucks with ’04 and ’07 engines remains competitive. When EGR engines first hit the road, there was talk of cleaning DPFs at facilities set up around the country but that didn’t occur, says Eggen. “That was a fallacy; cleaning machines costs upwards of $40,000.” Because of the high cost, very few cleaning facilities exist so drivers tend to replace the DPF instead of getting it cleaned. For Clark, the most important precaution that a used-truck buyer can take is a dynamometer inspection. “Anyone who’s buying a truck should have an inspection, and we recommend a dynamometer inspection. You should look for compression in the cooling system. Look for the

amount of blow-by you have. That’s the amount of gases that get past compression rings that push down on the oil. ... Measure your overflow where your engine breathes. It is the best indicator to look for worn rings.”

BE THOROUGH Clark adds: “Check the ECM [engine control module] for fault codes and true miles… the ECM will show true miles. When we write contracts, we look at true miles from the ECM and odometer miles.” He recommends that only authorized OEM dealers make engine repairs, and the maintenance history should show that. “If I’m a buyer, I want to dig into

the maintenance history as much as I can,” says Eggen. “Oil drain intervals are critical because of contamination of oil by soot and ash. I’d want to know what oil they ran. Generally, I want to see Tier 1 quality engine oils.” As for pricing, Williams is beginning to see a normal pricing spread between the ’04 and ’07 engines meaning that the used market is not placing an undue premium on either one, even though the ’07s tend to get better mileage than the ’04s. He also notes that many fleets have skipped the ’07 cycle and are going directly to the 2010 models. “From a used standpoint, there are a lot of ’04 engines on the market, which will not help [support higher] prices.” The 2010 engines will lower emissions still further with most engine makers using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology (others will employ an advanced EGR system only). With SCR technology, vaporized diesel exhaust fluid (DEF is a mixture of purified water and urea) and hot exhaust gases enter a catalytic converter located in the exhaust system after the diesel particulate filter. When the DEF reacts with the catalyst, it forms nitrogen and water vapor, both safe gases. Adds Williams: “The 2010 engines cost $11,000 to $12,000 more, and it will be interesting a year from now to see which emissions solution works best.” In September, Eggen was part of a focus group with some very large truckload fleets, and there were only five SCR engines being tested among them. “They’re running some SCR engines in fleets but not enough yet to see significant issues,” he says. “I was shocked that there were so few out there.” For now, the warning for usedtruck buyers remains the same: Do your homework and inspect carefully.
