It’s no secret that properly maintained components last longer, perform better and cost less to operate over the lifecycle of a truck. kimping on preventive maintenance (PM) almost always results in a false economy for any fleet—by resulting in excessive breakdowns, unscheduled maintenance and higher operating costs. “Spending money on maintenance is a given,” says Darry Stuart, president of Wrentham, MA-based Maintenance requires DWS Fleet Management Services. “But the focus should be on where management of the and where not to spend that maintenance money.” entire process I’ve known Stuart a long time now, and he’s forgotten more about maintenance than I know. After over three decades as a fleet manager in a variety of applications, he went out and opened his own “shop” so to speak. Stuart says fleets need to stay focused on the very basic—simple stuff such as using good quality greases and oils, monitoring tire pressure and wear, and checking brakes and electrical wiring. “First, you need to manage your PMs—to keep you on a regular cycle as to when they are conducted, on what vehicles, and at what cost,” he explains. “Next, you need to control and manage your parts inventory—to keep track of what’s going in and what’s coming out. Finally, you need to track your labor costs—and how you measure up against the industry.” At the end of the day, you need to remember that the way to be competitive is by managing your vehicle downtime and uptime better than the next guy. Driver comfort
Winning the logistics game
B
T
ose Corp. is entering the truck market with a product it said will improve driver health, comfort and safety while reducing fatigue by nearly eliminating road vibration and shocks. Designed to replace a typical air-ride seat, the new Bose Ride system incorporates several patented technologies to actively counteract what it characterizes as the most damaging “wholebody vibration” routinely endured by heavy-duty truck drivers. The new seat packages a highspeed electromagnetic actuator, a power amplifier, an electronic control unit as powerful as the ones typically found on a heavy-duty diesel, and sensors underneath an integrated driver’s seat. The company said the seat and base can be installed in most heavy-duty trucks in about two hours using the existing seat bolts, air line and a 12V power connection. The Bose Ride system actively counteracts both sharp inputs and vibration, nearly eliminating them for the driver’s body and keeping the driver’s head steady and level even over washboard or undulating roads,
Bose has incorporated technology to reduce fatigue in a new line of seats. explained Jim Parison, lead engineer on Bose’s truck-seat project. The system’s electromagnetic actuator can quickly react to sensor inputs according to proprietary algorithms developed over the last ten years by the Bose research team, Parison said. Power for the actuator, which can require up to 3,500 watts to react to those inputs, is provided by a regenerative amplifier that converts the vibration/shock energy into electrical power and stores it, drawing only 50 watts from the truck’s electrical system. www.bose.com
New aftermarket clutch line

rucking requires the same dedication to task as any sports team. Each team unit must pull its own weight. If the trucking company is late on pickups and deliveries, it weakens the team. If the broker is charging the shipper a fair hauling rate but is not paying the trucking company a reasonable rate for its services, it weakens the team. If the shipper or receiver constantly requires the trucks picking up or delivering to facilities to wait for hours before being loaded or unloaded, it weakens the team. For the team to succeed, every unit must work with the same goal in mind. As each unit—trucking company, broker, shipper and receiver— looks at its business model, members must be sure that model will benefit all team units and members. A team is a group of individuals working towards a common goal by working together as one. To create a well-oiled logistics machine, each of these separate teams need to become units of the winning team. This requires cooperation between each team unit, understanding the needs and wants of each unit, and all members working for the benefit of each other. Tag axles cut fuel costs, weight D ana Holding Corp. has introduced two new Spicer tag axles that improve fuel efficiency, reduce vehicle weight, and lower OEM installation costs. The tag axles will be offered via the Roadranger marketing alliance between Dana, Eaton Corp. and other partners, which provides a complete line of drivetrain components, systems, lubricants, safety products, and service tools. Jay Klinko, Dana’s senior product manager for heavy-duty drive axles, said that as much as a 3% gain in vehicle fuel efficiency is possible largely via weight reduction and an improved axle drivetrain design that minimizes energy losses. The total weight reduction makes the axle roughly 400 lbs. lighter than a traditional 40,000-lb. tandem arrangement, he said. When specified with either a Spicer S170 or Spicer S190 single-

drive axle in the forward drive position, Klinko said the axles also maintain the same 40,000-lb. GAWR of a traditional tandem axle, while maintaining up to 100,000-lb. GCWR. The single-axle design also requires 14 fewer pints of lubrication, providing additional weight savings and lowering maintenance costs over 6x4 tandem axles, he noted. Efficiency improvements are achieved by eliminating energy losses associated with inter-axle drivelines and rear-axle assemblies. Reduced installation costs are achieved by the elimination of the inter-axle driveshaft, rear axle head unit, rear axle shafts, and rear axle lube, Klinko added. www.roadranger.com

n innovative mobile washing system cleans up to 20 trailers on a single tank of reused water, saving both time and money, according to the manufacturer. The Vader I 5000 Series from Jim Manufacturing is a mobile brush washing system that reclaims 99.9% of the water that normally falls to the ground during the washing process. This water is then reused during the next wash cycle, dramatically reducing water usage. Clean water is used for rinsing. A trailer can be washed in six minutes, the company said. The system utilizes shielded brush action to remove road film, soot and chemical deposits, and is equipped with a wand with a reel-up hose so rims, mud flaps, and other hard-toreach areas can be detailed. Vitran Express is one fleet that is seeing the benefits of this system.
It can take as little as six minutes to clean a trailer with the Vader I 5000. “We want to have a good-looking image, and being on the road day in and day out, the trailers get a lot of road grime,” said Chris Smith, shop manager for Vitran. www.mobilewash.com/vader
obinair has introduced its 34988 Premium R-134a Recover, Recycle and Recharge (RRR) a/c machine. The company said the unit provides increased accuracy by giving the user the ability to inject dye; flush a vehicle’s a/c system with liquid refrigerant; and save before and after service data. An automatic dye inject feature injects UV dye into a vehicle’s system, eliminating the need to use a separate injector. It will also determine how much lubrication oil needs to be injected back into the system based on how much oil was removed during recovery. The unit provides a method of removing any liquid contaminants by forcing liquid refrigerant through an a/c system, or components of a system. A special flushing adapter, which can be purchased separately, accesses the a/c system at the compressor block, and flushes it with refrigerant, thus eliminating any residual oil or other liquid contaminants from the system. www.robinair.com

oran Manufacturing has unveiled several improvements to its Doran 360 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). These include a new valve stemmounted sensor that allows fleets to receive digital tire pressure and temperature data using Doran’s handheld SmartLink tool. With this feature, Doran said its SmartLink tool can be used to transmit a low-frequency signal that will activate the sensor and transmit the current data back to the unit for viewing. This enhancement provides a simple, fast and accurate method to obtain tire pressure readings. The Doran 360 is also being integrated with an onboard Windows-embedded computer and mobile communications system for truck and trailer fleets. The truth about torque
W
ed in the truck tire and wheel service nician 27 years ago, most wheels and d with the standard 1-in. impact wrench simply because we didn’t know any better. The market was dominated by demountable (or Dayton) rims and stud-pilot (or Budd) wheels, so the goal for most technicians was to keep the rims from spinning and the inner and cap nuts from Visual inspections outer breaking. There a few fleets are not enough in were that understood importance checking torque. the of proper fastener torque, but most of the industry followed the “good-and-tight” approach. A lot has changed since then. Hub-pilot wheels dominate the industry, while demountable rims and stud-pilot wheels are primarily used on older equipment and a few specialty applications. The good-andtight method for installing fasteners with an impact wrench still exists, but thankfully it is being replaced by torque wrenches and other tools that can deliver precise amounts of force. More and more fleets and tire dealers are realizing the importance of proper fastener torque because none of the hub, drum or wheel companies recognize impact wrenches as torque control devices. But torque wrenches are not magic wands that mysteriously guarantee the wheels or rims will stay on the vehicle. Every system has its own recipe for success and if the step-by-step procedures are not followed, the end result can be loose components—even if they were installed with the proper torque. The key factor for wheel and rim retention is clamping force, which cannot be
18 American Trucker/ r/April 2010
measured in the field. Therefore, technicians must be trained to follow the recommended guidelines before tightening the fasteners with a torque wrench. Although technicians can perform each step of the installation process and torque the fasteners to the exact specification (with a calibrated device), the wheels or rims can still become loose. For decades, the industry has recommended retorquing the fasteners after the first 50-100 mi. in order to identify components that may be in need of replacement or assemblies that were not properly installed. As someone with experience in legal proceedings, I believe the word retorque implies that it wasn’t done correctly the first time, so I’ve made it my personal mission to replace it with the words torque check. There should be little confusion when deciphering the meaning of a torque check. It implies that the fasteners were installed with the proper torque and then checked down the road. And while many drivers and fleets ignore the disclaimer at the bottom of most invoices that states that a retorque or torque check after the first 50-100 mi. is required, failing to abide by that warning can have catastrophic results. Like all mechanical components, degradation over time is unavoidable. Wheel studs and fasteners gradually wear out, but it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) for technicians to visually identify certain types of damage. That is why the torque check is so important. The torque check is not the only method for identifying a yielded stud, but it’s probably the most realistic and doubles as the best practice for preventing wheeloff accidents. AT

The cost puzzle Simply eliminating line items isn’t effective budget management
W
hen the going gets tough, the tough get going. In the world of trucking, this always seems to be the case. Trucking is a challenging business with so many unpredictable events or costs facing us each mile our trucks roll. We can’t control the weather, road construction, or a number of other outside events. Still, there are numerous things we can control, but this sometimes requires making some tough decisions. One of the most challenging and hardest tasks to undertake is the line-item cost analysis. What exactly is a line-item cost analysis? It’s the process of evaluating every single cost related to running your business. It requires careful scrutiny of the value the item or service provides, and determines how the expensed item affects, in a positive or negative way, the activities your operation must perform in the course of doing business. Too many businesses will take the cost-cutting knife and just start dicing and chopping expenses left and right without evaluating the overall effect these reductions or elimina-

tions have on the entire operation. In many cases, reducing or eliminating an expense does decrease a company’s break-even point. Sometimes, however, cutting an expense actually causes other costs to inflate. It becomes necessary to evaluate the net effect of any cut or reduction across your entire business. What is the result of the action to the overall efficiency and profitability of your operation? In other words, just because it reduces costs doesn’t mean it will increase profitability. As a drastic example, if a trucking company were to eliminate all fuel costs, it would have gotten rid of one of its highest expenses, but it also would have made it impossible to service its shippers as the trucks sat parked.
Go to
You must wisely choose where the ax falls. As you evaluate each expense required to run your operation, ask yourself these questions: X What would happen if you eliminate an expense altogether? X How necessary is the item, service or person? X What would happen if the item, service or person were eliminated altogether? Would it lower or improve customer service? How would it affect overall efficiency? Would something or someone else have to replace or fill the void left by eliminating this cost? X Would eliminating the expense cause other costs to increase or decrease? By how much? X What is the net cost increase or savings after making the cut? By studying the entire picture of what happens when you do away with any cost, you are able to see the far-reaching impact of your actions. You must spend money to make money, but it’s how wisely and carefully you invest those dollars into the cost of doing business that will determine your ultimate level of

success. A particular law of physics applies here: for every action, there is an opposite reaction. Most costs don’t exist in a void, so for every expense cut, there is a cost or time requirement needed to fill the void. For example, say you lay off your only dispatcher to save the cost of his or her salary. Obviously, your operation can’t run without someone dispatching the trucks. Now you have to perform the dispatching duties (along with the other tasks you are required to do) or have someone else in the office do it. The reduction of this expense might look good on the profit/loss statement, but what is the actual result in the overall operation? If your current tasks require you to monitor customers, farm for new ones, do the bookkeeping, and be the paymaster, how are those jobs affected by adding dispatching duties to your list of responsibilities? Both increases and decreases in costs and time must be evaluated. If your analysis indicates an increase in the company’s break-even point after eliminating the expense, then the next evaluation should look
Go to
at reducing rather than eliminating the expense. Will this decrease be effective in obtaining the necessary cost savings? What will happen if you reduce the expense instead of getting rid of it? Here are some questions you need to ask: X At what level is the item, service or person necessary? X What would happen if the cos of the item, service or person is reduced? Would it lower or improve customer service? How would it affect overall efficiency? Would something or someone else have to replace or fill the void left by this cost reduction? X Would the cost reduction cause other costs to increase or decrease? By how much? X What is the net cost increase or savings after completing the cost reduction? Use the example of the dispatcher. Look at the net effect of reducing the hours and pay of the dispatcher rather than laying him off. Measure the results by answering the questions in the second list concerning reduction of an expense.
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
After doing repeated line-item cost analysis, I have found that most large expenses like personnel, fuel, and vehicle maintenance and repair will cause the biggest increase in other costs if cut, thus negating any real savings. It’s usually the culmina-
tion of the reduction or elimination of the small costs that actually add up to the greatest net savings. Controlling costs in all areas is vitally important, especially in the large expense areas mentioned above. But constantly checking to see if there’s a cash drip coming from your cash flow faucet is one way to be sure your hard-earned cash isn’t going down the drain. w and retooled battery designs e trucking market these days— for tractors and medium-duty er. The battery needs of auxiliary power units (APUs) and trailer refrigeration units are also getting more attention as well. For example, take the Oasis Group 31 battery from Firefly Inc. Compared to conventional batteries, the Oasis is said to offer longer runtimes, faster recharge, improved high- and low-temperature performance, and longer calendar and cycle life. Firefly said it achieved these performance gains by removing portions of the lead metal used in traditional lead acid batteries, replacing it with a microcell composite material that enhances the chemical performance in the battery while resisting degradation. Then there’s the new battery from Trojan Battery Co. designed specifically for electric APUs. The OverDrive AGM 31 is a sealed absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery aimed at supporting idle-reduction systems on heavy trucks. With the ongoing implementation of anti-idling regulations across the U.S., Trojan said the need has never been greater for reliable, heavy-duty cycling batteries that provide steady power for electric APUs. The company believes electric APUs equipped with its OverDrive AGM 31 battery should start to see a return on investment in as soon as 12-18 months after initial use. The Odyssey 31-PC2150 battery, manufactured by EnerSys, is another 12-volt battery that’s being aimed at APU users. It features a pulse hot cranking amp rating of 2,150 amps for five seconds, much higher than the standard 770 cranking amps of most batteries. Even refrigeration system maker Carrier Transicold is getting into the battery business by recently rolling out the new PowerRush Platinum AGM battery to power refrigeration units and other Group 31 applications. According to Carrier, the design of the PowerRush provides 1,150 cold cranking amps (CCA) of starting power with deep cycling ability and cold-starting performance. The pure lead battery is said to retain 75% more power than typical Group 31 wet cell batteries at -4 deg. F (-20 deg. C). The battery comes with a four-year full replace-

ment warranty. The aftermarket is also getting new options, courtesy of TRP Aftermarket Parts, a division of Paccar. The company recently released a full line of dual-purpose batteries for truck, bus and other commercial vehicle applications. Available in either lead-acid or AGM format, TRP said its aftermarket batteries offer up to 1,150 CCAs for cold-weather reliability and as low as 650 for warmer climates. “While AGM batteries are more expensive than traditional lead-acid batteries, all it takes is one day of lost revenue to make it worth your while,” said Everett Seymoure, global brand manager for TRP. The dual-purpose nature allows for more frequent discharge and recharge, and the batteries include fiberglass strands embedded in the plate surfaces to lock active material to the plates to prevent shorts, the company said. Both battery types come with a two-year warranty supported by Kenworth and Peterbilt dealers nationwide.

Rebuilt or reman?
It’s up to you Its

When it comes to the choice between remanufactured or rebuilt parts, there is no one answer
D
eciding between buying a remanufactured or rebuilt part can be difficult at times, and it’s made even more confusing by definitions that can vary within the industry. “There’s a lot of terms out there, and some of it is just marketing,” says Bill Gager, president of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Assn. (ARPA), which also encompasses heavy-duty truck parts. Fortunately, most industry stakeholders agree on the following guidelines: X In a rebuilt part, components that appear to still be functional are cleaned and reused. Only parts that are worn or broken are replaced. In other words, the repair is done up to the level of failure. X In a remanufactured or ‘reman’ part, all components are disassembled and thoroughly cleaned or replaced and brought up to original specs. The overall part is tested to original equipment standards. Some remanufacturers fine-tune the definitions even further, which can be especially useful for explaining work done on complex parts like differentials. Thompson Motors of Wykoff and St. Paul, MN, which has been in business for almost 70 years, places its differential offerings into precise grades: X Used takeouts, which come from salvage and are inspected, carry a 30-day warranty. X Reconditioned, which are good used units from salvage, have been completely disassembled, cleaned and thoroughly inspected. They are reassembled with a new seal and some new parts to make sure they are quality products at a good price. They carry a 90-day warranty. X Rebuilt, which has new bear-

ing seals and thrust washers, may or may not have a new ring and pinion, several ‘excellent’ used components, and a complement of new parts. They carry a one-year warranty. X Reman, which always has a new ring and pinion as well as new bearings, seals and thrust washers. All critical wear components are new. They carry a one-year warranty. “For some people, if they could wash it, they rebuilt it,” says Rod Thompson, company president. He and others despairingly describe parts that are simply washed and repainted as ‘Krylon recon,’ a practice not seen these days except among shady operators. “We had one competitor—he’s no longer around—who cleaned and washed units and called them rebuilt units. That’s why we decided to spell out exactly what we do.” The company also handles other parts including power steering, air dryers and transmissions. “In today’s world, ‘Krylon reman’ is almost over with,” says Gager. “You can’t get away with it on today’s sophisticated components.” As parts become even more complex, especially electronic components, the lines between reman and rebuilt may become more difficult to discern as companies amp up their level of services and offerings.” “The lines can get blurry between
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
rebuilt and reman,” says Doug Wolma, general manager-reman, at ArvinMeritor. “The price of a sophisticated reman is not going to be that much higher than the price of a rebuilt. There’s not going to be a big difference. Reman is better quality, but the difference between rebuilt, reman and new is always price.” Wolma says that his company handles transmissions, axle carriers, driveline and wheel end reman, disc and drum brakes, and a new entry, steering gears. “We do all makes. It’s not just ArvinMeritor original products, but our competitors’ products as well.” The industry guideline is that a reman part will cost about 70% of a new OEM part. Those in the industry say that if the reman part is done correctly, it should last as long as the OEM part. How does a fleet decide what to do? The answer depends on the truck’s age; how long the fleet wants to use it; how the fleet uses it (longhaul, shorthaul, etc.); and, of course, the fleet’s budget constraints. “When a truck is new with a significant amount of capital value, it makes sense to spend more money on a new part,” Wolma says. “But when the truck gets older, especially if it’s on its second owner, and for sure when it’s five or six years old... there’s not enough value in that vehicle to justify spending $15,000 on a new engine or $9,000 for a transmission. You have to find a cheaper alternative. That’s the market we participate in. “If you have high horsepower trucks, for example, traveling coast to coast, then you need to spend money on bearings and rings,” Wolma explains. “Bearings are a good invest-

ACCESSIBILITY Another important factor to look for is accessibility. Is the part available? “Downtime is a huge factor,” notes Vanslambrouck. “The number-one question, other than quality, should be, ‘When can I get it?’ Although a fleet owner may prefer

ment because the duty cycle is longer—18 hours in one day and a lot of heat compared to a local farmer who only runs it 20 weeks a year.” One rule of thumb is to make sure that the most critical components of a part are new, advises Rich Vanslambrouck, national sales manager, Weller Reman Center in Grand Rapids, MI. “Look for items that can suck the life out of units like synchronizers, bearings, washers and magnets. They should all be new.” The company remanufactures drivetrain components and won the 2008 Heavy Duty Remanufacturer of the Year award from ARPA. “We disassemble every part, inspect it, and clean it. Cleaning is an important part of a reman, and we use a process that is proprietary to us,” Wolma says. “We make it so clean that we can even paint the interior of the case, which will help stop corrosion.”
a reman over rebuilt, he will choose the rebuilt—even for a brand new truck—if it’s ready to go in a few hours as opposed to waiting several days for a reman unit. This is a huge edge that rebuilders sometimes hold over reman units, and it has forced remanufacturers to take a closer look at how they handle inventory.” Vanslambrouck says that his company stocks 12,000 transmissions and differentials. They have 20 locations with 600 to 1,000 units in each location. “We have a 99% fill on every major make, model, speed and ratio Class 7 and 8. The fill rate is not just measured by three-day shipping. It’s on the shelf and ready to go when you call. It’s not easy or cheap to do

this, but it’s a value proposition that we offer to the industry.” ArvinMeritor also seeks to take availability out of the equation by leasing warehouse space. “We have 26 third-party warehouses where we store components. We can reach 95% of our customers in one day or less. Call in the morning and get it in the afternoon,” says Wolma. Rebuilders also tend to shine when it comes to relatively simple procedures like brake relining. Many rebuilders maintain there’s simply not that much difference, and trucks can get back on the road quickly with robust inventories of rebuilt brakes that can accommodate most makes and models. Another way that companies are differentiating themselves is by adding even more value to their reman and rebuilt products by making them better than some OEM parts. Jim Sharkey, vp-business development at Trax Mechanical Systems, which just opened a facility in Louisville, says that their reman brake shoes include hardening on the end that even some new shoes might not offer. “Corrosion is most critical if you have rust issues. You might get better coating on some reman units as opposed to new,” he adds. When a new part fails sooner than it should, OEMs often get a pass.

ONLY AS GOOD AS THEIR WORD
ArvinMeritor
They stand by their product and replace it as soon as possible. When a rebuilder or remanufacturer’s part fails, boy, do they hear about it. Often, especially in the case of electrical parts, the reman or rebuilder is not at fault. “With electrical parts, the biggest problem is installer issues,” says Joe Stilson, sales manager of Precision Rebuilders in St. Clair, MO. “For example, many installers are misdiagnosing alternator failures— it could be battery failure. They’re ‘failures’ that are not failures. We see faulty installations, not just for cars but across the board.” Gager agrees: “Electrical has the highest failure rate, but it’s also misdiagnosed the most.” This issue of diagnosis and installation will become increasingly important as more electronic components are added to trucks. [Availability of] reman and rebuilt electronic parts will boom because the parts are expensive, and it may be hard to find ones that are more than five years old.” “A legitimate reman [supplier] is not going to put anything bad out there knowingly,” Stilson says. “It costs too much to ship, and leaves a bad taste in a customer’s mouth. The majority of problems we see [with electrical parts] have more to do with diagnosis and installation than anything else.”
Driveline components are typical of the types of parts that can be rebuilt. Also, until the economy shows definitive signs of moving forward, many fleets will be reluctant to buy new until they are sure that times will be substantially better. All this activity will be in addition to normal incremental parts purchases that include reman and rebuilt. Reman and rebuilt will also get a boost from green initiatives. “In China, 70% of commercial truck parts must come from reman. These kinds of regulations will creep to Europe and to North America.
Parts must always be tested before they leave the reman or rebuilt facility. It’s important to know what was tested and what equipment was used. For instance, if a remanufacturer promises that the unit will perform up to OEM specs, you should understand how they’re doing it. Ask them how they test the part. “Testing is a key feature,” says Vanslambrouck. “Ask what type of dynos [dynamometers] are being used. The quality of dyno has a bearing on the level of inspection. Our dynos are our own customized dynos, and they can pick up gear noises that others cannot.” So, will it be rebuilt or reman? Before you decide, make sure that your research includes checking the facility. “Word of mouth is best,” suggests Gager. “Ask people in the industry. Trial and error is worst. Ask distributors, other fleets, other truckers…. You’re looking for credibility. We stress that it’s about the relationship. Price is price, but quality is subjective.” AT Rebuilt or remanufactured parts offer a cost-effective alternative for many fleets.
THE FUTURE LOOKS ROSY
28 American Trucker/ r/April 2010
ArvinMeritor
Reman and rebuilt will also grow as the economy and freight picks up. As the economy improves and truckers want to get back in the game, they will turn to reman and rebuilt as an alternative to replacing with new parts. This is especially true of trucks that have been parked against the fence during the downturn, many of which have been cannibalized to keep other trucks on the road. These sidelined trucks will need reman and/or rebuilt parts if new ones can’t be found.

CONSTRUCTION
All in the family Construction firm focuses on its people
C
Construction is one of those industries that looks simple on the outside, yet is anything but once you are on the inside. Hauling gravel, dirt, a sphalt—you name it—in dump trucks only looks like easy money. It’s when you start including wear and tear on equipment, driver turnover, plus the seasonality of the construction business that things get complicated in a hurry. Unless, of course, you’re Hilco Transport Inc. Celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, Hilco, which got its start as Long Brothers Construction, has a pretty simple formula for surviving and thriving in the rough-and-tumble construction business, starting, not surprisingly, with drivers. William Henry “Doc” Long founded Long, which still remains as a division of Hilco, not long after coming home from World War II. He felt that good people formed the backbone of any successful business, a mind-set his son, Gurney Long, Hilco’s president, maintains to this day. “We want our drivers to retire with Hilco, and that’s how we approach them,” Gurney explains. “Their experience and attitude is what keeps customers coming back to us. That’s why we pride ourselves on our service. That means a lot to them and to us. That’s why we spec extras in our
30 American Trucker/ r/April 2010
trucks where we can; why we spend time and money on various safety awards for them; and why at the end of the day we try to treat them like family. That’s why we’ve done so well over the years.” It’s also reflected in the lengths the company goes to provide its drivers and other personnel with top-notch training. Two years ago, for example, Gurney hired a veteran safety director from the airline industry to come in and create safety videos and training seminars for the company. Gurney and his older brother Charles joined the family business full-time in 1983. By then, their father was already deep into the second piece of his growth strategy: diversification. “He formed Hilco Transport to serve other areas of our customers’ businesses, such as hauling liquid asphalt, petroleum products, and municipal waste,” Gurney says. “In 2005, we started hauling liquid propane to offset the slowdown in liquid asphalt business during the wintertime and ...that’s helped us weather the economic troubles in the U.S. these last few years.” The two companies together operate a large chunk of equipment, namely 60 dump trucks and 108 tractors, with 95% Mack Truck models. “We maintain four specific tractor specifications for our various busi-
Go to
nesses, with two vocational dump truck specs for tri- and quad-axle models,” he notes. “Again, we look for every opportunity to upgrade them in terms of safety, longevity and driver retention.” Doc Long transitioned the family business to the second and third generations, with Gurney and Charles sharing operating duties along with their sister, Patty Hill. Charles’ daughter Wendi handled the construction side of the business with Long Brothers. But that changed in 2003 when Patty retired and Charles unexpectedly died. Now, Gurney runs Hilco while his son Jonathon learns the ropes. The third and final phase of Doc Long’s long-term strategy is to do-ityourself whenever possible, a belief shared by Richard Walford, Hilco’s vp-maintenance. “We like developing our own truck specs and doing all of our own maintenance, except warranty work,” Walford says, noting that most of his staff of ten technicians work out of a main shop at Hilco’s headquarters in Greensboro, NC, with others scattered among three satellite shops located at three other Hilco terminals across the state. The true icing on the cake, though, is that Doc Long is still around to witness the success of both his business and his family.
