Death by speeding

I

It’s more than a little ironic that despite all the rhetoric flung hither and thither concerning the threat fatigue poses to highway safety—especially where truck drivers and hours-of-service (HOS) regulations are concerned—it turns out that speeding poses a far more imminent and larger safety issue. According to a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Assn., Speeding of all speeding remains a factor in one-third of vehicles needs traffic deaths every year. In 2010 alone, some 10,530 people lost to be addressed their lives in speeding-related crashes in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, representing 31% of all traffic deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s more than twice the number of people (3,675) who died in truck-car collisions that same year. Here’s the kicker though: Since 2000, traffic fatalities linked to speeding have increased by 7%. Between 2007 and 2009, even the number of fatal truck-involved crashes fell 31%, according to numbers tracked by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. It’s interesting to note that while the trucking industry is pushing hard to get a speed limit cap of 65 mph placed on heavyduty engines, no similar effort is taking place on the four-wheeler side of the highway safety ledger. Safety groups might want to take a look at that. AT

f you strip away all of the technology in trucking, it still comes down to the ability of the trucker to load, drive, and unload product from Point A to Point B. The skills required to do this efficiently and profitably have remained consistent for over 77 years. Shippers want on-time, damage-free, and event-free movement of their items—and that’s what a trucker needs to provide. To do this and make a profit, the trucker has to show the shipper that his company will provide top-notch service at a reasonable price, and one that is profitable for the trucker, carrier and receiver. This comes from selling the value, not the price, of the service. There will always be someone with cheaper prices, but will they provide the best service? You must always sell better not cheaper. Prove value to the shipper by showing that in the long run, your higher price is the result of better value. That means no damage and immediate resolution to any damage claims with no hassle on every load. There is a point when it comes to pricing a move wherein value exceeds price. You must find that critical mass figure to be successful. With all of the increased attention that CSA has placed on the condition of truck tires and wheels, the physical appearance of the assemblies is more important than ever. While most tires appear to be round and black to the average law enforcement official, the wheels are a completely different story. After all, from a distance all tires basically look the same, but rusty wheels are noticeable across four lanes of traffic. That is one of the Wheels that look reasons why aluminum wheels have grown in rusty will draw popularity over the but even they are officers’ attention years, subject to the effects of age and ice-melting chemicals. The wheel companies have made tremendous progress in developing new finishes that can withstand the constant abuse of our nation’s highways, but they come at a higher cost when compared to standard aluminum wheels (which are already expensive). But the real issue is steel wheel refinishing—the appearance of reconditioned steel wheels does not last as long as the original finish. One of the reasons is that the wheel manufacturer has the advantage of starting with perfectly bare steel. Perhaps the most difficult aspect of steel wheel reconditioning is the removal of the existing finish. If the shot blast material is too large, it can create severe pitting on the surface; if it’s too fine, it can have the same effect as sandblasting and actually reduce the thickness of the metal. Of course, the challenges do not stop with the removal of the old finish. Bare metal can develop flash rusting in a matter of minutes. Modern wheel manufacturing plants utilize various stations throughout the process so there isn’t a lot of time for unprotected steel to develop any

10 American Trucker/April 2012

rust. Most of the tire dealers and retreaders that refinish wheels have a limited amount of space and employees dedicated to the process. In a perfect world, the wheel would be cleaned and coated shortly after the old finish was removed, but the world is far from perfect. Another reason why refinishing a wheel is much more difficult than applying the original finish is that the application of a primer is critical for long-term performance. While it can be accomplished in the aftermarket, it requires more precision on the part of the operator because the total “paint” thickness cannot exceed 3.5 mils, especially around the bolt circle. In many cases, the operator who removes the old finish is also responsible for applying the primer and final coat, so it takes a special skill set to achieve consistency. Even with all of these obstacles, I think the current wheel refinishing industry does a remarkable job given the economic restraints placed on them by the market. Fleets constantly pressure suppliers for better prices and performance, but the margins are so small that most companies look at it as providing a service rather than it being a profit center. Wheel refinishing will never be their core business, so the amount of resources dedicated to it will continue to be limited until something changes. The basic technology for high-quality aftermarket wheel finishes is already in place. But the price would have to approach the cost of a new wheel in order for it to perform at the level that fleets want. If the market is willing to pay a premium price for a premium product, then I’m positive that there are companies out there that will make the investment. Until then, fleets will continue to get what they pay for. AT

Cat power Firm pushing new CT660 to the limits

J

James Zambero has seen a lot of equipment in 32 years with O&G Industries. From roles in parts and purchasing, as maintenance director for 10 years and as vice president since 1996, he has worked with suppliers to ensure the fleet is ready to meet the company’s needs. Headquartered in Torrington, CT, O&G Industries is a privately owned company now in its third generation of family management. One of the largest construction materials and services companies in the Northeast, O&G provides building and heavy civil construction services, and a variety of construction materials. “We field 103 Oshkosh ready-mix trucks and 115 tri-axle dumps, primarily Kenworth models with bodies supplied by Universal Body and Equipment in Oakville, CT,” Zambero says. “Our dump trucks haul materials and construction equipment over onand off-road terrain. When it comes to equipment, we need trucks that are built for our operation.” Zambero’s knowledge of exactly what that entails has led numerous manufacturers to seek out his advice.

12 American Trucker/April 2012

About three years ago, Caterpillar came calling. “Cat came to us and said they were getting into the on-highway vocational truck market,” Zambero recalls. “Their idea was to design a single platform that could be equipped with a variety of bodies. We told them that a cookie-cutter approach would not work for us because our trucks have to be built for our needs, including considerations such as axle spacing. “After our initial discussions,” continues Zambero, “Cat contacted us to see about sending a field engineer to work with our staff and drivers. He spent a lot of time getting a firsthand look at how our trucks are used. When Cat called again to see if we would operate one of six pilot models of its new CT660 on-highway truck, we were very interested.”

FAVORABLE RESULTS

In September 2011, O&G took delivery of a Cat CT660. Equipped with a setback front axle and dump body, a 475-hp. Caterpillar CT13 engine, and Cat’s CX31 automatic transmission, the truck has been running side by

Go to

side with other units in the fleet. “Most of our trucks have 15L engines and manual transmissions, so we were very surprised that the Cat 13L diesel and the CX31 6-spd. transmission provided more than enough power for the roads we travel and the loads we haul,” Zambero relates. “The CT660 is also lighter than our other dump trucks. With the ability to haul 25.3-ton payloads, the Cat can handle as much as 1,500 lbs. more than some of our other units.” Initial fuel-efficiency comparisons are also favorable. “We’ve compared the Cat to other trucks hauling the same materials on the same routes,” Zambero says. “So far, the CT660 has consistently run at more than 5 mpg compared to an average in the high 4 mpg range for other units with automatic transmissions.” Founded in 1923 with two trucks and a steamroller, O&G Industries is still focused on meeting its vehicle and equipment needs. “We have to do our homework so we can buy the right equipment,” Zambero states. “Working with suppliers goes a long way toward making that happen.”

shop talk MANAGER: Bruce Donatelli TITLE: Supervisor, Office of Fleet Management FLEET: City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA OPERATION: Municipality responsible for the acquisition, assignment and maintenance of about 6,300 vehicles and related equipment.

Storage solution Efficiency and productivity are watchwords in any fleet operation. But when you are tasked with supporting 43 different departments operating over 6,000 vehicles and pieces of equipment involved in everything from snow removal, trash collection, and roadway paving to police, fire, rescue, and runway support operations at the nearby international airport, those two words are often the difference between success and failure. That’s particularly true when it comes to dealing with the many varied parts required to keep such a diverse fleet up and running. “Manufacturers make a lot of changes to part design and shape from year to year,”

PROBLEM

notes Bruce Donatelli, a supervisor with the city of Philadelphia’s Office of Fleet Management (OFM). “To improve productivity, we sought to consolidate most of our parts storage from bulky, traditional shelves on our third floor down to more flexible, space-efficient shelves in our first floor service bays, where the work actually gets done.” The cramped spaces in OFM’s 16 shops alongside the continual introduction of new vehicles and parts make efficient parts management difficult when using the traditional (and often inflexible) storage methods commonly seen in the maintenance and repair shops of most municipalities.

Philadelphia’s OFM decided to experiment with a flexible type of storage system developed by Tatany, PA-based Equipto called V-Grip. Donatelli said OFM liked what it saw. “The option to add or adjust shelves, drawers, or other accessories as needed helps us maximize storage density where it is needed most, next to the service bays—even if part sizes or configurations change,” he says. He explained that the main drawback of traditional modular drawer cabinets on casters is that they are essentially unchangeable steel boxes, unable to efficiently accommodate changing part sizes, shapes, weights, quantities, or configurations. As needs change, for instance, storing washer-sized parts in 6-in. drawers could waste a large amount of space, as could stashing 3-in.-high parts on a 24-in.-high shelf. Also, as fixed parts storage capacity often lags behind need, clutter results with parts too often stored on the floor, on top of cabinets, and stacked in boxes. That’s where Donatelli said the V-Grip helped out. “We at least doubled our storage in a limited space,” he noted. “We added vertical storage with a deck over the mezza-

nine above our shelves with stair access. This gave us the room we needed for bulky items such as doors, hoods, fenders, and body panels.” V-Grip is designed to allow parts managers to adapt and create denser storage capacity as it can be interchanged in the shelf cavity as business dictates. Since each shelf, drawer, or accessory is individually mounted to upright posts using a proprietary bracket system, they are individually adjustable and can be added at any time without disassembling the unit, Donatelli said. The system features shelves with up to 400 lbs. capacity that can be adjusted at 3-in. increments for storage of bulk items and items of different sizes. For small- to medium-sized parts, drawers in 3-in. increments can be added, along with drawer or shelf dividers to keep small parts from mixing. Locking and see-through doors in various combinations can also be added for more security along with visibility. To lock down the entire system, the mobile aisles are rolled together and locked down with a single key, improving shop floor productivity.

Batteries

O

One of the most overlooked components in the trucking industry, unless your truck doesn’t start, is the battery. Demands on batteries have grown through the years mainly because anti-idling regulations require trucks to be turned off more frequently. And if a truck consistently runs in cold weather, there is added concern. Most customers are asking for “starting batteries that can provide up to 1,150 cold cranking amps (CCA) to get their trucks moving,” says David Kelly, product marketing manager for Paccar Parts. “Operators in predominantly warmer climates want batteries that offer more longevity than cranking power. But regardless of the climate in which they run, operators need batteries with high-quality components to handle the rigorous environment of a commercial vehicle.” The TRP Parts line of batteries includes both standard lead-acid designs and absorbed glass mat (AGM) technology, Kelly says. “The TRP dual-purpose batteries allow for more frequent discharge and recharge with their heavier, thicker plates,” he says. “Fiberglass strands embedded into the plate surfaces lock active material to the plates, preventing shorts between the plates.” Brad Bisaillon, sales manager-strategic accounts & transportation for Trojan Battery Co., says that with more electronic devices in cabs, demands on batteries continue to grow. “Batteries have become application-specific,” says Bisaillon. “For example, Trojan manufactures the TransPower ST 1000 Group 31 AGM for starting applications, and the OverDrive AGM 31 for heavy-duty cycling applications such as battery-powered APUs and liftgate applications.” AGM batteries, Bisaillon says, are suited for over-theroad applications where electrical demands are highest. “Trojan’s TransPower ST1000 is a high-performance, heavy-duty starting battery with a cranking power of 1,000 CCA,” he says. “It is engineered with a combination of highdensity paste and a thick wire grid design. The heavy-duty plate construction can deliver nearly double the battery life of a standard flooded starting battery [and] features a 48-month full replacement warranty.” “We have found that the battery must be able to handle the drain of the increasing number of heavy-duty truck accessories that require deep cycling batteries like auxil-

business of trucking

B Y T I M B R A D Y, BUSINESS EDITOR

Basic training Return to the fundamentals of your business when difficult times arise

I

n a football game, if a team is behind, a quality coach always returns to the basics and concentrates on executing fundamental techniques with precision, staying focused on reaching the goal line one yard at a time. In the world of trucking, it isn’t any different; when the going gets tough, it’s time to return to basics.

16 American Trucker/April 2012

Tough could be that you just lost a major customer’s shipping contract; it could mean your costs are outpacing your income; or accounts receivables are much larger than the bank account balance. To get back on top of these or similar situations, you must focus on the basics of business, much the same as the coach will focus on the basics of the game.

Go to

Each situation outlined above— service, efficiency, and expenses— can be resolved by focusing on a few basic business principles. Constantly farming and cultivating new business is a way to help deal with the loss of a major shipper as a customer. There are many variables that can suddenly change your company’s relationship with a customer. For example, the owner’s daughter marries someone in the trucking business; the company is sold to new owners; there is an extreme drop in business; or a multitude of other possibilities. The way to guard against this is two-fold. Remember, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. No single customer should represent more than 30% of the total revenue of

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

your business. Second, always have other customers waiting in the wings to replace any loss of business. Track current shipping customers to see if there are other opportunities to haul additional loads. You must constantly farm for new business, even when your carrier is running at capacity. Ever notice that teams with a deep bench packed with talented players to replace those injured or tired seem to win more games? There’s no difference when running a motor carrier; the deeper the customer bench, the more consistent the revenue will be.

RISING COSTS

What if costs outpace revenue? Tis indicates one of three problems, or maybe even all three. One, costs have increased without an equal or greater increase in hauling rates. Two, the business environment has changed. Tere may have been a good load-totruck ratio in the lanes in which your trucks operate, but now there are fewer loads than trucks, causing rates to fall. Tree, costs are out of control and need to be reined in. Again, we’re going back to the basics of business; you need to do a cost analysis to find out why there’s a cash leak. It could be as simple as equipment that’s been idled due to lack of business. If that’s the case, the equipment either needs to be sold or its fixed costs need to be rolled into the cost of the entire operation and divided equally among other equipment that’s still producing revenue. Not sure how to do a cost analysis? Start by answering the following questions: q What would happen if you reduced or eliminated an expense? q How necessary is the item, service or person?

Go to

q What would happen if the item, service or person were reduced in frequency of use? Or eliminated altogether? Would it lower or improve customer service? q How would it affect the overall efficiency of your drivers or your carrier? q Would something or someone else have to replace or fill the void lef by reducing or eliminating this cost? q Would reducing or eliminating the expense cause other costs to increase or decrease? By how much? q What is the net result of increased costs or savings after you have completed the reduction or elimination? By answering each question,

“The deeper the customer bench, the more consistent the revenue.” you’ll have a much better picture of how well you’re in control of your costs and what items could be reduced or eliminated for a positive result. The final situation outlined above is having your accounts receivable balance higher than the carrier’s bank balance. This is a cash flow problem, ofen directly traced to your carrier’s DSO (days sales outstanding). Tis is the average number of days that a company takes to collect revenue afer a sale has been made. Te lower a DSO the better, with the optimum being collecting at the time of delivery or at the time of loading. Te longer the time it

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

takes from dispatching a load to collecting for the service, the higher your carrier’s DSO. A high DSO number shows that a carrier is selling its hauling service to customers on credit and taking too long to collect money owed. Any time DSO exceeds 31 or more days, the financial strain placed on the carrier builds. It’s not uncommon for a carrier’s sales to be excellent and at capacity, but because the DSO number is too high, the company doesn’t have the needed cash to operate. Tere are only a few ways to deal with this dilemma, from least to most costly. Solution one is to collect what’s owed your carrier in a shorter time—COD, FOB or within five days of delivery. Solution two is to have a temporary source of cash either in reserve or in a revolving line of credit. Te third is to have a factoring company purchase your high DSO accounts receivables at a discount.

SHIPPER SCREENING

The ‘last resort’ is to either sell or hire a bill collection agency. But if your carrier has reached this impasse, you need to look at the criteria under which you’re screening potential shippers. If your carrier is spending too much time chasing receivables, you’re sacrificing time needed to create new revenue sources or neglecting other critical duties, which can’t be good for your business. Success in trucking is like any team that desires to be the winning team. Te carrier owner who concentrates on mastering the basics of the business of trucking will be the winner. AT

ime used to be that if a truck went down on the side of the road, more than a little luck would be required to get it back up and running on the asphalt quickly.

Aside from obvious malfunctions, such as a blown tire or hatched turbocharger, neither fleets nor drivers can ever be entirely sure what might be wrong due to the increasingly more complex web of electronics controlling the modern-day truck. On top of that, the hit-or-miss vagaries of finding a tow truck—let alone a mobile technician—capable of making it to the breakdown scene and fixing the particular problem adds to the aggravation suffered by truckers stranded at the roadside. Now, though, that’s changing, and in a hurry, as a variety of technological resources and specialized roadside services are being brought to bear on the problem. “We have always relied on the driver to monitor and maintain the health of the vehicle while on the road,” explains Eric Manegold, vice president-business development for commercial vehicles at Zonar Systems. “Now technology has dramatically expanded that circle of care.”

Sensor-driven monitoring of the truck’s engine and other systems is the key to making remote diagnostics work at the roadside; something Zonar is intimately familiar with as it helped develop Daimler Trucks North America’s (DTNA) Virtual Technician (VT) system. “What is great about Virtual Technician, for instance, is that there is a constant stream of data coming in from thousands of vehicles that are connected 24/7,” Manegold says. Telematics has long been used to provide wireless communications between fleets and their vehicles, but

Go to

until recently has mainly been limited to real-time communication between driver and dispatcher—not the truck and the fleet, dealer or other maintenance facility. DTNA’s VT system—now standard on all 2012 Freightliners powered by Detroit engines—uses a black box/transmitter supplied by Zonar as well as a cloud-based computing platform to provide remotediagnostics directly to fleets. VT transmits real-time engine diagnostics with performance indicators to the Detroit business unit’s Customer Support Center, which then communicates to fleet owners any potential performance issues as well as service scheduling based on the data pulled off the truck. According to Tim Tindall, director of sales for Detroit Components, VT’s reporting to date has determined that more than 93% of the issues identified by indicator lights are easily corrected and can wait until the most convenient time for the customer to be addressed—meaning the truck can keep on rolling “Te device recording engine data is running all the time,” Tindall says. “It keeps the previous 30 seconds and the next 15 seconds surrounding any event off any sensor on the vehicle. Te onboard Zonar device transmits the data to our center where our experts perform the diagnosis, going well beyond reading fault codes. Troubleshooting is done by experts who can tell the trucker what the issue is, how crucial it is, and what it will likely take to fix it.” DPL America is another firm selling a remote-diagnostics system directly to fleets. Unveiled earlier this

year, the capability is part of the company’s Titan equipment-monitoring system. Titan provides wireless monitoring and remote tracking of both over-the-road trucks and off-road equipment. Te system’s features include remote access to and real-time delivery of diagnostic fault codes, fuel consumption, idle vs. work time analysis, engine direct hour meter/ odometer readings, and temperatures and pressures.

GROWING SOLUTIONS

Titan “allows managers to wirelessly monitor all assets continually and accurately from a robust, Internet-based sofware package,” points out Tony Nicoletti, director of sales & business development at DPL America. “Te concept of diagnosing an asset in the field without having to send a technician is now a reality.” OEMs Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks North America are also planning to roll out full telematics-based remote diagnostics systems. Navistar, too, is working toward this goal and already offers some remote-diagnostics capability to customers operating its International-branded trucks. Volvo recently launched what it’s calling Volvo Truck Support Services, an integrated menu of services offered from a single source, which will eventually incorporate remote diagnostics capability. Central to the new offering is bundled roadside protection service provided at no charge on all trucks during the base two-year warranty period. It also includes the company’s Volvo Action Service, which allows owners to begin and manage a repair either online or over the phone. Te third element in the standard service bundle is a web-based tool for managing the entire repair process from receiving estimates directly from dealerships to issuing purchase orders and maintaining an electronic

cover story record of all service activities by individual vehicle. Called ASIST (short for Automated Service Initiation System), it is a web-based platform also offered at no charge with the purchase of a new truck. Other support options available through the new single source service include full contract maintenance, leasing and rental, extended warranty coverage, online access to parts searches and purchases, and around-the-clock access to purchase and repair histories. “Bundling truck support services can help protect assets, improve operational efficiency, offer a ‘one-stop shop’ for service and parts information, and provide options to manage costs,” says David Pardue, Volvo Trucks vice president, aftermarket solutions. Yet even if an issue is determined to be serious enough to shut the truck down on the side of the road, drivers can readily tap more resources to get repaired and running again, with far more detail concerning estimated time of arrival, service charges, etc., than in the past. TravelCenters of America’s RoadSquad, for example, is a fleet of more than 400 emergency road service vehicles now equipped with GPS tracking technology located across

GPS GUIDED

“Our GPS technology allows us to know exactly where to find the downed driver and provides service technicians that drive our emergency service trucks with detailed directional information to the breakdown site,” notes Tom O’Brien, president & CEO of TravelCenters. “Our national dispatch center knows exactly where everyone is; that allows us to provide more accurate arrival time and status information to downed drivers, lowers our response times and gets our

customers back in business faster.” He adds that TravelCenters invested significant capital in the new system, which also provides critical RoadSquad fleet maintenance, operation and driver performance data. “This data is critical to optimizing inservice time of all of the vehicles in the RoadSquad fleet, further enhancing our ability to respond to customers’ needs and get them back on the road,” O’Brien says. Drivers with iPhone or Android smartphones can call RoadSquad with a touch of a button through TravelCenters’ “TruckSmart” mobile app, allowing the driver to provide the exact latitude/longitude coordinates of the breakdown to RoadSquad dispatchers, he noted. Such third-party roadside support systems offer truckers a more cost-effective method for managing breakdowns, argued InterStar North America in a white paper it published last year. Entitled “The Cost of Managing Truck Breakdowns,” InterStar stressed that the cost of managing roadside repairs goes beyond towing fees, parts, and maintenance service to include other “soft costs.” “The true cost of an employee goes beyond his or her rate of pay. Human resource analysts say that the ‘loaded’

cover story or true cost of an employee is 25% higher than the rate of pay once you include typical employee expenses such as hiring costs, training costs, equipment costs and insurance benefits,” InterStar reported. “Based on that statistic, employees managing road service in the trucking industry cost trucking fleets $23.13 per hour.”

THE TRUE COST

To successfully manage a single emergency breakdown event, from start to finish, a significant amount of employee time is required. This includes: ❑ A driver will place 1.2 phone calls, on average, before reaching a dispatcher (or other employee managing road service) and providing all of the breakdown details such as his or her location, equipment information, the problem with the equipment and other vital service details. ❑ The dispatcher will spend time using a breakdown book, internal vendor database, or an online vendor database to determine a list of potential service vendors. Once the call list is determined, a dispatcher places an average of 2.4 phone calls to speak with a service vendor, provide all of the breakdown information, discuss payment information, and receive an estimated time of arrival (ETA). ❑ The dispatcher will place another 1.1 phone calls to provide the driver with the service vendor’s ETA. ❑ After communicating the ETA to the driver, many companies will spend time placing phone calls or sending emails regarding the breakdown to other employees or to the customer regarding a potential delivery delay. ❑ An additional 2.8 outbound calls are placed to the servicing vendor and driver to follow up with the repair to make sure the vendor showed up on time, the repair was completed to satisfaction, payment arrangements were made and final phone calls and/

Diagnostics can now determine if an issue needs immediate attention. or emails are completed to other personnel or the customer waiting on the freight. Total company time invested in the above processes equates to roughly 2.15 hours per breakdown. There are also additional “soft” time investments required as well to successfully manage a breakdown. These include: ❑ After the repair is completed, the dispatcher or an accounting employee will receive an invoice or receipt from the service vendor. If the vendor was not paid at the time of the repair, the invoice will need to be reviewed and processed for payment. If the vendor submits a receipt, many fleets will file the receipt and/or log the payment details in an internal system to close out the service and payment. ❑ To help improve maintenance and equipment purchasing decisions, many fleets will spend time creating and reviewing reports to analyze breakdowns including locations, the type of equipment breaking down, tire usage, vendor costs, etc. ❑ Total company time invested in the above processes: 1.6 hours per breakdown. Many truckers do not account for all of the time spent to fully manage a repair, InterStar stressed, noting that although an average

Go to

breakdown will take 2 hours from the initial breakdown request to being back on the road, a trucking company will allocate 3.75 hours per breakdown when all processes are accounted for, spending $86.74 per repair as a national average, the company calculated.

COST SAVINGS

By contrast, InterStar said it charges a $55 fee to manage a repair, reducing a company’s per breakdown management cost by $31.74. That may not sound like a lot, but based on the company’s internal and shared fleet customer data, InterStar determined that an average tractor/ trailer combination will suffer about one emergency breakdown per year. That’s $31.74 per vehicle the company owns, and perhaps even more if the equipment is older and suffers higher-than-average breakdowns. “A fleet will also potentially save hundreds of thousands of dollars by not purchasing systems and software required to develop an efficient in-house breakdown call center,” the company noted. That’s precious money added back to a fleet’s bottom line; money that helps provide a bulwark against a variety of unexpected costs that are just part of doing business in the rough and tumble world of trucking.
