Tax support

Sean Kilcarr Editor sean.kilcarr@penton.com Tim Brady Business Editor tbrady@writeuptheroad.com

The Mineta National Transit Research Consortium (MNTRC) recently released a report based on three years of public opinion surveys regarding taxation and transportation. While those polled said they’d support fuel tax increases for specific transportation needs such as maintaining roads and/or building new ones, it was thumbs down on tax increases for vaguely defined efforts. For example, the survey found that a maSpecifics of jority (58%) of the 1,519 people polled would plans alter support a gasoline tax increase of 10¢/gal. to improve road maintenance; however, support public opinion plummeted to 20% if that tax revenue would only be “used more generally” to maintain and improve the transportation system. The group discovered that for tax options where the revenues were to be spent for undefined transportation purposes, support levels varied considerably by what kind of tax would be imposed. A sales tax (49% approval) was much more popular than either a gas tax increase (20%) or a new mileage tax (21%). In fact, MNTRC’s researchers discerned that “mileage fees” proved very unpopular under most scenarios—in the very low 21% support range for even a 1¢/mi. tax option. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the two most popular priorities for transportation funds were road maintenance and safety improvement, rated at 95% and 81%, respectively. None of those conclusions should really shock anyone, but at least we now have the numbers to back them up. AT

igital Ally has released video event data recorders (VEDRs) that do not require ongoing contracts or the purchase of additional software. Digital Ally’s VEDRs are said to provide liability protection and insurance and operational savings by recording vehicular accidents and providing proof against fraudulent claims. The DVM-250 and DVM-250Plus VEDRs record and store video, audio and detailed information from vehicle-involved incidents. Recordings may be set to automatically start when the vehicle reaches a specific speed, drives within specified GPS corridors or ranges, or any number of other customizable options, including violent maneuvers, shifting the vehicle into reverse, emergency lights, and door sensors. Recordings may also be started manually, such as to record criminal

The devices record 30 seconds prior to the moment a recording is triggered—either manually or when preset. Accidents caused by others, such as illegally turning in front of a VEDR-equipped vehicle, will also be recorded, providing valuable protection to the driver and their employer, Digital Ally said. www.digitalallyinc.com

n trucking, it’s all about the team. The best leaders are made from the best team members. What determines how the team performs during a crisis depends upon its leader. To be successful, a company needs quality leadership. Here’s a list of dos for a quality leader: ❑ Give feedback that moves the team forward. Compliment team members in the presence of others. Provide correction and criticism in private. ❑ Spread the knowledge. The more the entire team understands other members’ responsibilities, the more efficiently it functions. ❑ Encourage contributions and suggestions from all team members. Inclusion is always better than exclusion when needing top performance from an individual. It’s what creates the team. ❑ Show empathy and understanding to team members. This requires everyone to listen and understand what the others have to say and what they contribute to the team effort. To quote Lyndon B. Johnson: “There is but one way to get the cattle out of the swamps. And that is for the man on the horse to take the lead, to assume command, to provide direction.” Are you that person? Tool simplifies strapping A new strap winder from KenTool will save time and make securing nylon straps to a flatbed deck’s winch easier, the company said. To use the tool, drivers simply insert the winder into the winch shaft tightening hole and using an in/out motion, quickly wind the strap onto the winch spool. After the slack has been drawn into the spool, the driver engages the ratchet locking mechanism, and tightens the straps by inserting the handle end into the tightening holes and turning the shaft. The strap winder weighs 2.1 lbs.

endrickson International announced its SteerTek NXT axle is now available on International ProStar+, TranStar, and LoneStar models. A fabricated front steer axle, the SteerTek NXT includes continuous beam architecture that minimizes stress points for added durability while providing a superior strength-to-weight ratio, the company said. The rigid box-shaped cross section of the axle resists horizontal, vertical and twisting forces more effectively than traditional I-beams and is designed to manage the increased brake torque resulting from the stopping distance regulations. For brake option flexibility, it is compatible with both drum and disc brakes with either 5/8- or 3/4-in. fasteners. The design of the SteerTek NXT helps eliminate 23 lbs. of weight compared to traditional I-beam axles, Hendrickson said. It can be combined with Hendrickson’s monoleaf spring technology to form the Softek lightweight front suspension system. SteerTek NXT, which is available in capacities up to 14,600 lbs., can also be paired with Hendrickson two-leaf spring designs. A patented two-piece knuckle assembly simplifies kingpin bushing serviceability and includes a new double lip seal to further improve bushing life. In addition, integrated steering arm and tie rod attachments increase strength and further reduce weight, providing greater durability helping to reduce maintenance costs, the company said. The SteerTek NXT comes with a 10-year, 1-million-mi. limited warranty. The warranty coverage includes the axle beam, steering arm, knuckle assemblies and kingpins when used in Hendrickson approved applications in the U.S. and Canada. www.hendrickson-intl.com

Wide singles & safety

S

Stop and take note because I believe we may be on the cusp of a revolution in the truck tire industry. Like the tubeless tire on a single-piece rim that replaced the old multi-piece tube-type and radial-replaced bias, the trend towards replacing duals with wide singles is no longer a trend. Years ago the weight and fuel savings were not enough for most fleets to look past the shorter tread life. But the price fuel keeps going Understand safety of up and treadwear is improving so the before working number of converts continues to grow. with wide singles While all of this adds up to lower costs for fleets, it’s going to take a toll on the entities responsible for demounting and mounting these behemoths. A typical wide single assembly weighs about 250 lbs., which means lifting and maneuvering it puts more strain on the body. A truck tire changing machine is the best solution to this problem; in most cases, all the technician would have to do is roll it up on the platform and work the controls. But this type of equipment is expensive—and tire irons are not. That’s why a lot of technicians prefer to demount and mount tires on the vehicle. It’s a subject that comes with controversy for several reasons. First, by not removing the assembly from the vehicle, some service providers feel they will be held responsible for a future wheel-off since they didn’t torque the fasteners at the time of service. The deciding factor is the type of tire that will be mounted. If a new tire is being mounted, then the procedure can take place on the vehicle because federal law allows tires on single-piece wheels to be inflated while the assembly is still attached. If the tire has been retreaded

12 American Trucker/July 2012

or is returning to service, then it should be inflated in a restraining device because it could experience a “zipper” rupture; therefore, servicing the tire on the vehicle really isn’t an option. Personally, I see the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. On the plus side for the “on-the-vehicle” crowd, I definitely see the time and safety advantages associated with not lifting the assembly. My personal belief is that if a service provider does not loosen the fasteners, then a visual inspection of the wheel is all that is required. But I also recognize that ignoring someone else’s improper installation can be seen as contributing to the problem. New technology often creates new problems and this is only going to get worse as wide singles become more popular. Poorly trained technicians can do a lot of damage to the beads with tire irons, so knowing the qualifications of the individuals doing the work is important. Likewise, a tire changing machine in the hands of the wrong person has the potential to create even more damage, which means fancy equipment does not indicate the level of service. If fleets are going to start relying on wide singles for the majority of their tractor and trailer positions, then the people doing the work must be held to a higher standard. The consequences of a 250-lb. wheel-off are unimaginable, and a flat on the highway due to a torn bead is going to be very expensive. When technicians are properly equipped and trained to service wide singles, then the savings should be easy to recognize. When they are not, people are more likely to get hurt and the cost benefits will never be realized. AT

MOVING & STORAGE

Moving target Continual change a necessity to meet customer needs

W

ÒWe steer our business based on nine core values, including Ôoperational excellenceÕ as the primary driver, yet we are always seeking ways to improve our model,Ó says Gary Martin, executive vice president of administration at Clark & Reid Co., Billerica, MA. ÒWe have some of the same challenges as other moving and storage companies and unique issues we work hard to address. ÒFrom May to September, we have to continually build up our hauling capacity by finding and retaining top-quality drivers,Ó Martin continues. ÒThat challenge is ongoing, but itÕs even more pronounced during the busiest moving season.Ó The consequences of not having the resources to handle loads can go beyond just the loss of revenue for Clark & Reid. ÒOur primary relationships are with the companies that are paying to relocate their employees,Ó says Martin. ÒIf the employee is pleased, then the company will be too, creating greater business opportunities.Ó Compounding this challenge is the nature of the executive relocation services Clark & Reid provides to

Go to

Fortune 500 and other corporations. ÒWe canÕt hire just anyone,Ó Martin states. ÒOur drivers are in homes. In addition to being able to professionally pack and load their belongings, we need them to be trustworthy, considerate, punctual, and have excellent customer relations skills.Ó

INDIVIDUAL FOCUS Clark & Reid drivers, mostly independent contractors, are treated like valued partners. ÒWe know every driver by his or her first name,Ó says Martin, Òand we work hard to know them as individuals. We believe that Clark & Reid should be an attractive place to work for people with the right competencies, and who will be equally committed to providing quality service and helping us grow.Ó The company also has a formal method of rewarding drivers who bring in other qualified owner-operators. ÒDrivers can earn an additional 2% of their linehaul revenue as a bonus for every driver they refer and we hire, with no limit on the number of bonuses,Ó Martin explains. ÒAs long as both parties remain employed by

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

Clark & Reid, the bonus is paid for three years. ItÕs a long-term benefit that is apparent in every paycheck.Ó Clark & Reid has also developed a proprietary costing tool so drivers can accurately gauge their potential earnings for each load. ÒDetermining what drivers can take home is an industry challenge,Ó Martin says. ÒWith this tool, we estimate tonnage and by knowing the loadÕs origin and destination, we can provide the driver with a top line figure. We then estimate fuel, labor, packing material, and other costs and project a bottom line for each load. Drivers can always reject a load. ItÕs not effective for anyone to lose money, and if we canÕt help our contractors be successful, we wonÕt be either.Ó According to Martin, another contributor to the success of Clark & Reid is the decision it made 10 years ago to outsource maintenance to Ryder Transportation. Today, the company fleet of 11 Freightliners and about 50 Kentucky 53-ft. air ride electronic vans are maintained in a dedicated shop near the carrierÕs facility and at Ryder shops across the U.S. Clark & Reid traces its roots to 1902 when Michael Martin established a local package express company using horse-drawn trailers. In 1925, his son purchased Clark & Reid, established in 1910. Today, a third generation of the Martin family continues to operate the business, which for over 20 years has maintained a 100% on-time delivery record. ÒWeÕre driven by our values and a code of conduct that form our vision,Ó explains Martin.

shop talk MANAGER: Jose E. Davila Sr. TITLE: Fleet superintendent FLEET: General services administration/ City of Miami OPERATION: Municipal operation providing refuse, fire & rescue, police and other public services

The hydraulic question L

ike many fleet managers in both public and private industry, Jose Davila for years felt endlessly bombarded by vendors trying to sell his fleet on all kinds of “snake oil” purportedly able to boost truck fuel economy anywhere from 3 to 5%. “For the most part, none of that stuff ever worked,” he explains. Then, about three years ago, Davila got to test a new hydraulic hybrid truck: an AutoCar refuse chassis equipped with Parker Hannifin’s RunWise E3 Drive system. “I decided to test it in our stop and go urban environ-

ment in order to quantify their [fuel saving] statements,” he explains. The truck was tested for 2.5 weeks. “I would have been happy with the 30% fuel savings they claimed, but attaining 43% on the demo truck was very encouraging,” Davila adds. As a result, the City of Miami purchased four such hydraulic hybrid trucks and has another two on order. Even as the fuel savings rolled in, however, there were questions that needed answers. How easy would it be to maintain these hydraulic hybrid vehicles? Would maintenance intervals decrease or increase? Would maintenance costs go up or down?

F

The fuel economy improvements combined with the maintenance savings from the hydraulic hybrid propulsion system significantly shortened the return on investment (ROI) Davila crafted to justify the extra up-front investment. “Our two newest hydraulic hybrid trucks were purchased without a grant and ROI is projected at less than three years, especially now that we can accurately project the brake change cycle at six years not three,” Davila explains. “Additionally, each truck consumes on average 51% less diesel fuel than a non-hybrid, or 385 gals. versus 785 gals. That is a 400-gal. savings per month per truck.” In one year’s time, that means one hydraulic hybrid refuse truck saves 4,800 gals. of diesel, with the city’s four hydraulic hybrid refuse vehicles saving a combined 19,200 gals. of diesel per year. “In the past, if you were able to capture the ROI in five years you had a good product, but less than three years is unheard of,” Davila says. “Each truck will save the City of Miami $81,000 in brake changes alone during the six-year brake change cycle,” he points out.

PROBLEM

irst off, Davila says the City of Miami doesn’t have any diesel-electric hybrid trucks in its fleet, so he couldn’t do any direct maintenance cost comparisons. He found the hydraulic hybrid setup required much less maintenance when measured against the city’s diesel-only fleet, which uses automatic transmissions. initially projected brake change SOLUTION cycles“I on the hybrid at three years versus every four months on a non-hybrid with automatic transmission,” he explains. “In April of this year, we inspected the first hybrid put in service at the City of Miami back in November 2010, and the truck showed minimal brake shoe wear. The projected brake replacement cycle has now been expanded to six years conservatively, not three years as originally expected. The big savings, of course, comes from burning less fuel. Davila says the demo truck the city’s fleet tested yielded 43% fuel savings as compared to a traditional diesel-only truck with an automatic transmission. “When we purchased the first hybrid, fuel savings yield for the first month of full operation was 47% and 50% for the second month,” he notes. “It has increased slightly to 51% and maintained that level on average.”

Instead, we need to have a defined set of destinations and goals. The idea that we can take the best paying load regardless of its

destination is no longer an approach to running a successful trucking business. It’s not just selecting the most efficient route possible, knowing where the fuel stops and rest stops will occur, and coordinating them to maximize the available hours of service. It’s now what loads are we going to return with, and will the overall revenue create the needed profit? It’s how the freight lane from which each truck will operate is set up, plus having alternative plans in place in case a load should change or cancel.

SEARCHING FOR SUCCESS To develop successful freight lanes for each truck, you have to know where you are and what route you’re going to take to get to

Go to

where you’re going. Equally important is where you’re going to end up and how you’re going to get back to your starting point to begin the process all over again. This is accomplished by creating a lane optimization plan for each truck. Treat each truck as an individual business. Create a separate plan for each truck’s freight lane by answering the following questions: ❑ What is your main objective? What is the ultimate accomplishment you hope to achieve for this truck and driver? ❑ What does the future look like in the lane in which you plan to operate? ❑ How stiff is the competition? ❑ What’s your idea to beat the competition? (If your idea is a

lower price, stop here and save yourself a lot of aggravation.) ❑ Do you have funds to sustain the truck and driver for the 90 to 120 days it typically takes to build a profitable lane? ❑ Have you included a salary or draw in your expenses, which covers you and your family’s needs? ❑ What are the projections for truck and driver expenses over the next year? Two years? Three years? Five years? ❑ What are the financial projections for revenue for the same periods? Are they realistic? ❑ Will the business revenue exceed your expenses? When? (In other words, at what point will the cash flow from the truck and driver surpass the break-even point and begin turning a profit?) ❑ Do you know your daily, weekly, and monthly break-even points for this truck and driver? ❑ Have you set your hauling rates based on your break-even point, plus the money needed to grow? ❑ What are the worst-case scenarios? And what solutions do you have for them? ❑ Are you willing to put forth the effort to create the necessary solutions? ❑ Have you dug deep enough in your research that your expectations and projections are based in reality? ❑ Have you included in the lane planning a means for the trucker to receive quality time at home on a regular basis and still earn a decent paycheck for both himself and your trucking company? Once you have the answers to these questions you can start de-

veloping the freight lane for each truck. It’s important to remember that at no time should any customer account for more than 30% of your revenue. This holds true for the trucking company and for each individual truck. The typical carrier will have one or two direct customers for their outbound loads and a mixture of different

In this unstable economic environment, we need to have a defined set of destinations and goals to be successful. freight brokers and 3PLs for the return freight. Keep in mind the vast majority of return freight will be done in short legs to get you to the point of the best paying return freight. The best bet for a profitable freight lane is often making short runs for low revenue freight. But the real bottom line here is that over a 30-day period, when all the revenue from all the legs within the freight lanes of a specific truck are added together and the total expenses for the month are subtracted, there is profit to

meet your goals. It’s not a single load that makes or breaks the effectiveness of a freight lane; it’s the combination of the revenue of all the loads and how it compares with the total expenses required to run the lane. Just as in planning the different roads you’d traverse getting a load from origin to destination, you need to plan each step required to reach the plateau of where you want your trucks to reach each year. To pick the correct directions when driving to a destination, the most efficient and quickest route usually isn’t the shortest, most direct route. The same holds true when navigating up and down the business highway to reach your financial goals and grow your business. You can’t take that 18-wheeler straight up the mountain; you have to climb it one switch-back turn at a time.

IN THE END... Regardless of whether you are an owner-operator with one tractor, or a small motor carrier with a fleet of tractor/trailers, you must develop a solid lane optimization plan for each of your trucks and truckers to succeed. While there will continue to be all kinds of obstacles, by managing each of your trucks as an individual business and developing specific freight lanes for each, you can maneuver around each obstacle placed in your path. One tool for all

By Sean Kilcarr, editor

i

The search for a single diagnostic tool for every system continues

n the classic tale Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, the “one ring” created by the Dark Lord Sauron was viewed as an evil device, a tool of black magic that sought to subjugate all other magic and magical talismans under its singular control.

Yet in the truck maintenance and repair world, the creation of such an all-powerful tool would be a most welcome, indeed, wildly cheered, development. Te search for a universal tool that can diagnose all makes and models of commercial vehicles is ofen considered a “holy grail” of sorts for truck technicians. “There are some new and improved systems out there that are universal tools targeted at the aftermarket such as the Cojali Jaltest tool, Noregon JPRO, Nexiq SmartLauncher and Nexiq iQ,” notes Chad Marti, fleet services manager for Clarke Power Services, a firm made up of 29 truck repair facilities located across nine states and a member of the WheelTime network. “Tey are all trying to be that ‘one-tool-fits-alltypes’ system when it comes to maintaining Class 8 and medium-duty trucks. Tey all have a good start on that, but today there is no silver bullet that would cover anything and everything that your shop may need.”

the search continues

David Shock, worldwide product manager for Snap-on Business Solutions and Nexiq Technologies, stresses that developing a true onediagnostic-tool-for-all remains a primary goal for shop-focused firms like his, regardless of whether such a tool comes in the form of sofware or as an actual handheld device. “Diagnostic software and hard-

Go to

ware solutions continue to change as the commercial vehicle market continues to progress,” Shock explains. “The availability of information supplied by sensors throughout the vehicle enables diagnostic information to be sent via telemetric systems like those beginning to be offered by some OEM manufacturers.” That means vehicle diagnostics can be conducted via PC-based sofware solutions, such as those favored by many large fleets, as well as the ubiquitous handheld scan tools used in a variety of shop settings to gather information, guide repairs and help conduct preventive maintenance. “Te PC enables sofware developed by OEMs or the afermarket to be used with a vehicle interface. Tis solution, although expensive, has a high rate of return on the initial investment as the facility has the ability to complete repairs beyond preventive maintenance repairs,” Shock says, noting that the PC provides the technician more detailed information. However, handheld scan tools provide technicians with a simpleto-use product that requires a reduced amount of training, often containing licensed sofware from the OEM. “Te scan tool is a less expensive point of entry, and product choices provide for both low-end and highend solutions,” Shock points out. The lower-end scan tools in the

market are used for information and triage. The higher-end scan tools provide a reduced amount of information than that of the PC, but provide good information for repair. The choice of product is truly up to the fleet or afermarket repair facility.” “Systems from companies like Noregon and Nexiq will allow you to do that and actually use their program to do the basic diagnostics,” adds Clarke’s Marti. “If you need to go more in depth or they don’t have coverage for a certain vehicle, they will incorporate that OEM’s sofware into their portal. In doing that, however, it defeats the purpose of having a universal diagnostic tool for you still have to purchase and install the OEM program with these tools.”

no standard

Marti also thinks universal tools won’t replace OE diagnostic sofware completely, at least not in the near future. “Te universal tools are going to fall short when you get into some of the really in-depth troubleshooting and diagnostics,” he believes. Dave Reed, a fleet management consultant with Arsenault Associates, agrees with Marti. “We are obsessed with being ahead of the knowledge curve with ‘pre-event’ information, with knowing about things like low oil and tire pressure before they happen,” he explains. “Tis is what’s driving the proprietary tools by the OEMs. Each OEM has developed its sofware around its engine and major component technology. Obviously, this creates an environment where the one-toolfits-all concept will not work.”

cover story

With different engine variables from OEM to OEM, it is increasingly difficult to design a single diagnostic tool. It’s also an issue that’s not as cut and dried as it seems, Reed stresses. “The diagnostic tool being unique to each OEM is not the main issue; the issue is that OEMs have created business plans that force the customer to either send their trucks back to them for repairs or buy very expensive OEM software diagnostic tools, along with additional costs for upgrades,” he explains. He notes that there is no standardization of tire sizes, light bulbs, mirrors, wiring harnesses, seats or even the wrench size used to maintain today’s trucks, either—another reason why so many different diagnostic tools and software packages exist. “That’s why technicians have to purchase a $15,000 tool box to hold all of those different tools,” Reed says. “Trucking’s future, and certainly its history, is surrounded by versatility. With all of the different versions of engines, combinations of drivetrains, and everyday new developments, OEMs have to be able to function within their environment rather than being restricted to some ‘standard.’”

20 American Trucker/July 2012

Yet the real issues remain the cost and ultimate control over the diagnostic tools used in the truck repair world. “In our case, we are focusing on automated data collection and instantaneous reporting of critical information directly to management and technicians via on-screen notifications, phone and email,” Reed says. “Thus, a key goal for us is to have our software capable of integrating with any OEM, monitoring all systems and fault codes, feeding those fault codes to the technician already deciphered, and displaying a schematic of the problem area with indepth details for repairs,” he explains. “A repair order could automatically be opened, ready for time and repairs to be recorded and completed.”

TRIAGE APPROACH

Greg Reimmuth, vice presidentsales & marketing for Noregon Systems, believes that even OEMs would like to see some form of universal tool developed. “OEMs will continue to push the proprietary tools and implement tac-

tics that perpetuate that dependence on the dealer,” he says, with OEMs continuing to implement encryption codes to unlock proprietary data and bi-directional electronic controls on the vehicle. “But obviously, with all of this fragmentation [different engines, drivetrain, etc.] today, even the OEM dealers are looking for a one-tool-fits-all approach. Unfortunately, it does not exist today. And with the complexity of heavy trucks becoming more prevalent with ever-changing emissions and mileage mandates, the standard serial component diagnostic routines are becoming a thing of the past.” As a result, a triage approach to total vehicle diagnostic routines is becoming the norm, something that may help the industry go further down the one-tool path over time. “With the advent of our mediumduty coverage modules, those [customers] operating half-ton trucks through Class 8 vehicles now have a solution that works on one hardware platform, which is unprecedented,” says Reimmuth.

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

Clarke’s Marti notes, though, that the trick going forward will be to somehow merge together the capabilities of software packages and scan tools into one tool. “Some of the handheld devices are good for quick checks, but they fall short on the diagnosis side. It is one thing to extract the codes, but it’s another to start the troubleshooting process within the tool,” he explains. For instance, Marti says a scan tool may show that your ‘check engine’ light is on due to a fuel pump circuit code, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the fuel pump itself is bad. “Even though [technicians] may be able to extract the code and tell you what the code is, you still have to troubleshoot and diagnose it,” he continues. “PC tools allow you to go into the diagnostics deeper and more thoroughly. In many cases, the PC-based software packages give you troubleshooting information as well as wiring schematics

Diagnostic codes can be helpful, but they don’t always tell a technician what is causing the problem. and things like that.” And if a company is using different makes, models, and classes of trucks, those issues only deepen, Marti points out.

In the end, whether they like it or not, truckers will need to deal with the complex and diverse array of diagnostic tools to keep their vehicles up and running. AT

here are tens, if not hundreds, of different technological devices technicians use to maintain and repair trucks: laptop computers, diagnostic code readers, handheld scanners, plus a plethora of software packages to boot. In Europe, Volvo Trucks, a subsidiary of AB Volvo in Sweden, is now experimenting with a different, yet quite familiar technological pathway: making the plain old smartphone an ultimate reference book for truck technicians. “Firstly, consumer products are produced in larger volumes, resulting in a significantly lower price than industrial made-to-order devices,” noted Kerstin Hanson, project manager at Volvo IT, another AB Volvo division, in an interview last year. “Secondly, users already have prior knowledge of the way this technology works and are therefore more likely to embrace it as a new way of working.” Bengt Persson, senior vice president of quality and technical support at Volvo Trucks, said that the whole point of this research project is to figure out ways to streamline work.

Go to

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

Giving technicians service instructions via a smartphone that they already know how to operate saves them time and hopefully enhances the quality of their work, he explained. Persson pointed out that information unique to each type of truck chassis will be easily accessible on a technician’s very own smartphone, delivered either as text or through images and animation. There are a lot of potential benefits to using smartphones in the shop, Persson said, such as using animation to allow for repair instructions to cross language barriers. As smartphones are mobile and easy to carry, they will also make it easier for technicians to be updated with the latest information as they work, he added. “Today, the service technician constantly needs new skills and information as new technology develops and more truck models are released onto the market,” Persson added. “As each truck chassis model introduced becomes increasingly unique, it is impossible for technicians to know everything about every vehicle.”

Liftgates

A

A liftgate can make life easier for drivers and shippers alike. Whether you need a liftgate for a Class 8, a straight truck or a delivery van, there are options available. Concern over corrosion due to highway deicers and other roadway chemicals remains a key issue for customers of liftgate manufacturers. Anthony Liftgates recently replaced its powder coat finishing system with a metal polymerization (MP) corrosion protection process from PRP Industries. “PRP MP corrosion protection is a proprietary process that results in a molecular bond between a copolymer [finish] and the base metal [similar to the process that takes place when metal products are galvanized],” says Mike Bilinski, Northeast U.S. regional sales manager. All of Anthony Liftgates’ products feature lifetime warranty on the bushings, steel pump, motor enclosures, and heat-treated components. At Thieman Tailgates, customers are not only focused on corrosion and rust prevention, but are also looking for a number of other features. Level ride platforms, larger platform sizes, foot-activated cart stops, incab shut-off switch, and LED light options are among their requests, says sales coordinator Doug Greves. Greves says the company’s focus on improving liftgate reliability includes a low-voltage thermal switch, in-line fuse, dual pumps and motors, power unit enclosures, and molded switches. Thieman is also using more aluminum in its product line, which helps with rust prevention and also lessens the weight of the units. A new option is to put all liftgate components through a hot dip galvanizing process, Greves explains, adding that customization is always an option. “We feel the industry is becoming much more specialized and that’s why we focus on custom-designed units,” Greves points out. “If a customer has a special need, we use our engineering expertise to try and meet that request. Customer requests vary from galvanized units, all-aluminum units, deeper platform depths, bolton installations, and special paint options.” Tommy Gate Co. focuses its product line on cargo vans, pickup trucks, service bodies, flatbed, stake and van bodies, and dump bodies. It attaches underneath the vehicle in front of the rear bumper in a “bolt-on” installation that requires no welding. “It’s simple to control with little required maintenance and no rust-corrosion issues, and extremely cart-friendly,” says Francese. “Most cargo used with these panel vans will be wheel-based, so the Cantilever Series platform supports even large size carts and has built-in FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT THESE WEB SITES: cart stops.” The High-Cycle ANTHONY LIFTGATES R ai l g ate a c c om - www.anthonyliftgates.com modates 2,500- and 3,000-lb. capaci- INTERLIFT INC. ties and includes a www.mbb-interlift.com roller-based slider for a smoother, more THIEMAN TAILGATES predictable motion www.thieman.com/tailgate with decreased maintenance. “With self- TOMMY GATE CO. open and self-close www.tommygate.com features, the operator never has to touch the WALTCO LIFT CORP. platform,” Francese www.waltcoliftgates.com says.

At Sentry Insurance, we’ve been insuring truckers since 1991. In that time, our policyholders have driven more than 18 billion miles! That’s the equivalent of driving around the Earth 700,000 times – or – taking 75,000 trips to the moon. Our insured drivers put on a lot of miles and Sentry has been with them every step of the way.

Go to ForTruckersOnly.com to get a quote or find a local agent.

Property and casualty coverages are underwritten by a member of the Sentry Insurance Group, Stevens Point, WI. For a complete listing of companies, visit ForTruckersOnly.com.
