Healthy impact

W

We’ve all heard the old maxim, “You are what you eat.” Most likely, too, we’re sick to death of hearing the steady tsk-tsking emanating from government officials of all stripes about how the lack of exercise and poor food choices contribute to rising obesity rates in this country. Yet, there’s a very distinct link between health, wellness and worker productivity being detected by researchProductivity ers these days, and that holds an awful lot of importance for trucking. It’s no secret that is linked to concern over driver fatigue is helping fuel more regulatory initiatives and commercial vehicle poor habits enforcement efforts—and fatigue is intrinsically affected by base-level health. Researchers from Brigham Young University, the Health Enhancement Research Organization, and the Center for Health Research worked jointly on a study of 19,803 employees working at three large, geographically dispersed companies. Their research concluded that even one unhealthy behavior increases the likelihood of lost productivity. So, for example, employees with an unhealthy diet were 66% more likely to report having experienced a loss in productivity. Researchers also discerned that employees who exercised only occasionally were 50% more likely to report having lower levels of productivity, and smokers were 28% more likely to report suffering from a drop in productivity than non-smokers. None of those findings should be surprising, of course. But they should reinforce efforts to encourage a healthier lifestyle. AT

Suffering from flashes of BFO W

hen someone asks how long you’ve been in trucking, what is your response? And when someone asks whether or not you enjoy what you are doing, how do you respond? Well, if your answers bring the gears in your head to a screeching halt, grab a paper and pencil. Jot down your answers to the following questions as fast as you can. Don’t think about it; just write the first response that comes to your mind, then watch some BFOs (blinding flashes of the obvious) emerge. ❑ What do I dislike most about running my small fleet? ❑ What keeps me coming into the office every day? ❑ What is my favorite part of the business? ❑ Where do I want to be in two years? Five years? ❑ Do I need to expand or cut back to get there? ❑ What will it take to achieve those goals? ❑ What would I do if I wasn’t in the trucking business? There are no easy answers to these questions. But this approach could substantially improve your trucking lifestyle. So, are you staying in trucking? Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. lean Diesel Technologies, a clean technology emissions control company, is offering leasing options for its ECS-branded diesel particulate filter retrofit solutions. The special offers are done in partnership with American Infrastructure Leasing (AIL), a provider of leases for aftermarket trucking equipment in North America. Under terms of the program, AIL will provide the capital, which is expected to enable qualified trucking companies to acquire Clean Diesel retrofit solutions on terms that are convenient and financially attractive to their businesses, said Lyndon Smith, Clean Diesel’s vice president and general manager.

“Mandated emissions reduction programs require fleet owners to replace or retrofit vehicles by certain deadlines, such as the California Air Resource Board Truck and Bus Regulation deadlines that begin this year. The requirement to retrofit one to several vehicles often results in the need for our customers to reprioritize their capital and financing needs, and this can become a burden for them,” Smith said. Under the program, AIL will provide equipment leasing options for the full range of DPF retrofit solutions available from Clean Diesel. www.cdti.com

Software update adds customization

A

LK Technologies has enhanced its PC*Miler 26 with more effective route visualization and customization. Interactive features of the release include satellite imagery, new map styles to customize the look and feel of the maps, additional zoom levels for more granular framing of the map window, and drag routing. The fastest routing option allows users to take advantage of real-time and historical traffic information, provided by Inrix, to find the preferred route to the destination. These routes may be longer in distance but are less congested compared to the standard PC*Miler practical and shortest routes, ALK said. PC*Miler | Traffic data can also be used for more accurate transit times and ETAs with all routing types. Users can set the time of departure, desired time of arrival, day of week, and time of day to calculate ETAs. For additional optimization, according to ALK, fastest routes are considered when least cost routing is generated. RouteSync ensures operational consistency between dispatched routes and actual routes, delivering the guidance to drive the miles that are being billed. With RouteSync, routes and preferences are sent directly to the latest version of ALK’s CoPilot Truck navigation software in the cab. In addition to maintaining route compliance, RouteSync reduces non-revenue mileage, improves load profitability, and increases driver satisfaction. Users can interactively verify and edit imported custom places using the map. There are four new toll discount programs in PC*Miler | Tolls. Also included are time zone designations in the route entry window and the ability to generate custom road and geofencing reports. www.pcmiler.com

PARTS

Beyond the price The source and quality of replacement parts can mean the difference in truck uptime

S

ystems to make ordering and controlling parts inventory are a great boon to fleets, but given the wide variety in parts choices and prices, there’s still one important question that needs answering: “What’s in that box I bought?” The array can be bewildering and the differences substantial even if they may not be readily apparent, so it’s important truckers understand the differences if they want to choose the best balance of initial

price, quality and reliability for their particular applications. Let’s start with the general categories that denote good-better-best quality. The “best” level is what most classify as OEM parts, that is, parts coming from the original manufacturer of the truck. Designed as an integral element of a larger assembly, those parts will be identical (or occasionally updated) from the ones originally installed during the manufacturing process. For example, gear sets from the company

that made a truck’s transmission, or a brake cam from the original supplier of the foundation brake system are considered genuine OEM parts. OEM parts are almost exclusively available through the manufacturer’s truck dealers. Warranties for OEM parts are usually 1-yr./unlimited mi., but sometimes can extend to the full warranty period of the vehicle. Branded parts are similar to OEM parts, coming from major component suppliers to the truck manufacturers and representing identi-

maintenance cal replacements for the parts used on the original new truck. Eaton, Meritor and Bendix, among others, offer OEM replacement parts for their various products under their own brand names. One significant difference is many component suppliers also sell under their brand name replacement parts for assemblies made by others. Branded parts are distributed through truck dealerships, independent parts networks, and the companies’ own dealers. Warranties for branded parts vary, but are usually similar to OEM parts. Moving to the “better” category are what those in the truck aftermarket call “all-makes” parts. These are generally lower cost than OEM parts and cover more than a single brand of truck or component. They are consolidated from many sources and most often marketed under a single name. The consolidator may be a truck OEM selling under a unique name such as Daimler Trucks’ Alliance brand or independent parts networks such as NAPA. Major component manufacturers such as Meritor also distribute all-

aftermarket calls both will-fit and white-box parts. As the name implies, will-fit parts are manufactured by third parties as replacements for branded or original parts. They are usually limited to high-volume items that can be mass-produced for the lowest cost possible. Since producers don’t have access to the original design documents, they are most often reverse engineered from new samples. White-box is a relatively new term for parts that come without any brand name. A subcategory of white-box parts are bulk or container-load offerings from offshore sources, which are often the lowest cost parts option. In either case, there is no name or brand attached to the part. The quality of will-fit and whitebox parts can vary greatly, as can functional life. Without attributable brand names, unknowns include manufacturing tolerance variables, testing procedures (if any), material quality and workmanship. Warranties can vary from none to limited replacement of failed parts. One other option is remanufactured goods, or remans. These are

maintenance components that have been disassembled into individual parts, which are then inspected and replaced or renewed when required before being reassembled into specifications that are similar to brand new components. Remanufacturing suppliers are usually medium to large assembly operations often run in separate plants by the makers of the original components. Performance and life should be equal to new, but prices are up to 60% lower. Warranties usually include parts and labor with national coverage. Remans should not be confused with rebuilt parts, which are usually single components that have been repaired to replace only the failed parts and generally do not meet original equipment specifications. And salvaged parts are just that, parts removed from scrapped vehicles and sold for reuse as is.

THINK TOTAL COST

Obviously, price differentiates the various parts categories, but a trucker needs to look beyond initial cost to accurately weigh the total cost of ownership for an individual truck and its intended application. Top quality is expected from an OEM or branded part, making it the choice for “anyone who is interested in retaining the original performance level and reliability of the vehicle,” says Paul Tuomi, director of parts sales for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). “Customers know that if they put [an OEM or branded part] on a vehicle, it meets our rigorous standards for durability, quality, fit. It’s buying peace of mind.” What might not be so obvious, though, is that the best category also brings consistency in materials, tolerances and other manufacturing variables, according to Terry

There are many considerations to make before purchasing a part, price being just one. Livingston, Meritor general manager for the aftermarket in the U.S. and Canada. “They should fit like a hand in a glove,” he says. “They’re not only made specifically for that vehicle, but as a global manufacturer we ensure consistency.” In comparison, a will-fit part is typically reverse engineered. “There is always a small range of tolerances in manufacturing,” says Brad Bagley, Meritor senior manager of drivetrain products. “If the sample they use [for reverse engineering] is on the high or low side of that and then you add their manufacturing tolerances, you lose that consistency from part to part.”

GOOD COMPROMISE

All-makes parts reduce the initial cost by “defeaturing,” according to Livingston. They can be a good compromise between durability and cost for owners of older trucks, he says. “At that better level, the feature set may be below a genuine OEM part, but you’re still getting the same warranty and nationwide availability” from DTNA’s Alliance parts group or other major parts

16 American Trucker/September 2012

Go to

suppliers, according to Tuomi. Allmakes is not just a product category, it’s also a distribution channel, he adds. All-makes suppliers like Alliance offer just that—parts for all makes, allowing companies running a variety of trucks to get what they need from a single source. Will-fit will certainly lower initial price, but the real cost could easily negate that original savings. “They may work at first, but if the maker doesn’t know all the mechanical requirements, you can end up with something that’s cheap at first, but costs more in the long run,” says Livingston. While will-fit parts carry a manufacturer’s name or brand, white-box parts don’t offer any identification. “They may be good—or not,” says Tuomi. “You don’t know where they came from, so the trade-off for low cost is risk because the manufacturer didn’t even put their name on the box.” As for remanufactured parts, “they’ve demonstrated their value for many years,” says Tuomi. “It depends on the supplier behind them, but there’s a lot of trust in the marketplace for reman parts.” AT

Solo doesn’t cut it

J

Judgment calls have been part of the tire industry since I was a teenager working out of a road service truck. Imagine driving 20 mi. into the middle of nowhere to fix what you think is a flat tire only to find out that the inside of the tire is a tangled mess of steel and rubber; that tire was flat long before the driver noticed. And since you just came from another jobsite, you don’t have a replacement, so you’re left with options: drive Going with a single two back to the shop to pick up a tire or tire is no longer a single it out. From standlegal practice point of thetheservice provider, the choice will always be to drive back to the shop and pick up a new tire. Attempting to repair a tire on the side of the road is complicated enough to begin with when the bolt is in the middle of the tread and well within industry guidelines. If even a hint of run-flat is present, the technician has to make a very difficult call on the spot. There are so many things that can go wrong and with the consequences so severe, most truck tire dealers prefer to just replace the tire rather than attempt a repair. But what happens when the driver and/or company refuse to replace the tire. It’s still a fairly common practice to demount the scrap tire and allow the vehicle to proceed with a missing tire on one dual. In fact, the general rule used to be that it was acceptable if the truck or trailer was empty because the unloaded weight would not overload a single tire in a twin screw or dual-axle trailer configuration. Fleets have been taking advantage of this practice for decades in order to save money on costly road repairs. In another prime example of wishing the question

18 American Trucker/September 2012

was never asked, it looks like the practice of singling out is in violation of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 571.120. This little-known regulation basically states that the sum of the maximum load ratings of the tires on an axle cannot be less than the gross axle weight rating (GAWR) established by the manufacturer. A 20,000-lb. axle must have tires that can support 20,000 lbs. Unfortunately, the standard 295/75R22.5 comes up 2,975 lbs. short when one of them is missing. Therefore, what used to be a judgment call is now clearly defined. It is a violation of FMVSS 571.120 to single out a tractor or trailer regardless of the circumstances. If the trailer is empty and 50 mi. from the terminal, the options are to have someone drive out with a spare or buy a tire. Trucking companies can expect more dealers to be less likely to single out any type of vehicle because they don’t want to be part of a possible lawsuit. I’ve personally had drivers swear on the lives of their children that they would get the tire replaced only to watch them come back a week later with the same bald or missing tire. Safety regulations are in place to protect the motoring public, so it’s easy to see why the sum of the tires cannot be less than the established GAWR. There’s no guarantee that the empty trailer with seven out of eight tires will stay empty until there is a full eight tires carrying the load. When it comes to regulations like FMVSS 571.120, the industry doesn’t have to like them, but we still have to follow them. I hope everyone enjoyed the free ride while it lasted because singling out truck tires is no longer an option when a tire needs to be replaced. AT

FIELD SERVICE

Customer connection Equipping vehicles with the proper tools improves customer satisfaction

T

The fundamentals of any service industry are to meet customer expectations. “It’s all about improving the customer’s experience,” says George Survant, senior director of fleet management at Time Warner Cable. “Today, however, expectations about service are more finely defined because for customers, a two-hour window can mean setting aside four hours in an already overloaded schedule.” Time Warner Cable’s wide-ranging effort to improve customer satisfaction is taking place across the 29 states where the company provides more than 15 million residential and business customers with entertainment, communications and information services. “We’re a large company with a high volume of demand for field service,” Survant notes, “and there is also the challenge posed by the highly variable time and service requirements inherent in this business. For our field service fleet operation, helping

achieve customer satisfaction goals is about fielding the right equipment and making sure it’s in the right place at the right time.” Reliable service vehicles are at the top of the list. “It sounds obvious,” he says, “but a three or four percent failure rate for items like tires and batteries means the same percentage of our service guarantees to customers is at risk, which, according to the operations team at Time Warner Cable, is critical. If we field the right equipment and maintain it effectively, we can eliminate those issues.”

UNIFORM EFFORTS The Time Warner Cable fleet has grown considerably through expansion and acquisition, and there is now a concerted effort to make a widely disparate fleet more uniform. The fleet’s primary vehicle is a standard van, and for the last few years Ford has been the company’s primary supplier. Some GM vans are

used as well. “Regardless of the make or model,” Survant relates, “a lot of detail goes into the layout, and into correct and consistent upfitting of ladder racks, light-duty aerial units, shelving, inside cable reels, and onboard power inverters, among other items. The goal is to turn what is essentially storage space into a mobile workspace at the best value.” A second critical element is the focus on ensuring that onboard parts inventories are adequate to meet the vast majority of needs when the vehicle arrives on site at a customer location. “Truck stock needs to meet most demands based on the customers you’re serving in a particular region and the distance to a parts supply,” Survant says. “The last thing a customer wants to hear after being sidelined for half a day is that the technician needs to come back later.” Third on Survant’s list for helping ensure customer expectations are met is having the fleet in the right place at all times. “The solution is to employ effective dispatch and operations management and planning practices,” he states, “and the use of AVL and GPS systems is also increasingly essential. “Across the field service industry, the appetite for accurate, extensive, real-time information about vehicles and operations has grown exponentially. We use it to analyze and improve our fleet and operating practices,” Survant continues. That fits perfectly with the goal of fielding a fleet that helps meet customer expectations, Survant notes. “I have been advised that at Time Warner Cable aggressive growth has meant making sure our entertainment, communications and information technology is leading-edge,” he concludes. “Today, we’re applying that focus to our fleet as well.”

ike many over-the-road fleets, Con-way Truckload wanted to find ways to improve the aerodynamics of its 53-ft. dry van trailers in order to save on fuel. Yet while a bevy of different trailer aerodynamic devices offered the carrier ways to boost the fuel efficiency of its big rigs, concerns about how they impacted trailer maintenance loomed large as well. “Instead of looking at the ‘utopia’ of test track fuel economy results, we try to take a look at things in the real world,” explains Randy Cornell, Conway Truckload’s vice president-maintenance. “In the real world, nothing is a perfect science; there

are just way too many variables,” he says. Take side skirts, for example. While they definitely reduce the drag created by moving a fully loaded trailer through the air, side skirts created other issues for the fleet—generated in part by their very design. “Part of the challenge with skirts for us derives from pretrip inspections,” Cornell explains. “The side skirt blocks the view of the trailer’s underside. We need to be honest with ourselves; skirts mean drivers will need to get all the way down on the ground to inspect the trailer underside. They also hinder their ability to look at the fifth wheel.”

A

rear axles, allowing for debris such as snow to build up in the gap,” he explains. “Also, the diffuser used to be mounted at the rear in a much more exposed position, so we had cases where drivers damaged them while backing into loading docks.” SmartTruck went back to its laboratory with the feedback and performed some re-engineering, which included testing new locations for the various UT-6 components to ensure they provided the same aerodynamic benefits while eliminating the previous problems. Now, the diffuser is located inboard of the trailer’s underride guard, protecting it completely. The wedge part of the UT-6 system was moved farther upstream from the trailer’s axles, with a long tapering wing helping it provide the expected aerodynamic improvement without being so close to the axle housing and wheels. Since those changes 18 months ago, Con-way Truckload has installed 1,800 of the UT-6 UnderTray systems on its trailers, with zero dollars spent on maintenance, Cornell notes. “And our drivers can still get under the trailer easily to conduct a proper pretrip inspection,” he points out. “That’s what really sold me on this.” —SEAN KILCARR

PROBLEM

bout two years ago, Con-way Truckload ended up selecting SmartTruck’s UT-6 Trailer UnderTray, a polyethylene plastic “wedge” attached to the underside of a trailer in front of the axles. Greenville, SC-based SmartTruck says its testing determined the wedge alone offered fuel-efficiency gain of at least 8.5%. SOLUTION aThose gains jumped to 11% when the full UT-6 trailer system, which includes the wedge along with a separate plastic attachment in front of the underride guard at the rear end of the trailer called a “diffuse,” and a “fin” running the width of the trailer’s top over the rear door was utilized. From a maintenance perspective, Cornell liked other attributes of the UT-6. The plastic material of the wedge can survive the abuse of the road and is bolted to the trailer using weather-resistant galvanized hardware and fasteners. Yet the initial positioning and shape of the UT-6 system didn’t work as well as expected, Cornell says. After receiving and installing 125 of the devices, Con-Way Truckload went back to SmartTruck and requested some changes be made. “The wedge itself used to be located very close to the

hat’s the one thing you will always remember about a company with which you do business? How you were treated as a customer. What’s the one thing you do if that company provides frustrating, aggravating customer service? What if you have to argue your way through the entire process, starting with the first person who answers the phone or stands behind the customer service sign? If the customer service rep can’t answer your question, or doesn’t have the authority to resolve your issue, yet refuses to consult a supervisor, it can leave a very sour taste in your mouth. If you’re like most people, you tell everyone you come in contact with about the experience—how bad it was and how it didn’t get resolved in your favor. We’ve all been there, done that. It could have been a cable company, phone company or a vendor/service provider to your business. However, the real issue is what customers are saying about your customer service, especially after they’ve had a service

breakdown or even a perceived service failure. Following are three scenarios as to how customers will react, depending on how well the problem was resolved: 1. Angry, unhappy and telling the whole world. In this age of Facebook, Twitter and online public forums, a breakdown in resolving a customer’s issue has the potential of going viral. And like the telephone game, the chances are what started out as a small problem turns into one of Armageddon proportion. 2. Okay with the results; plan on remaining a customer; and tell you they’re fine with the outcome. In this scenario, you are the only person who will know. 3. Amazed, bewildered, pleased beyond any expectations they had going in. They feel as if they’re the most important customer you have. Rest assured, in this scenario, customers will tell everyone with whom they come in contact what an amazing company you have; that you have people who really care; and that you’re actually interested in their business and wellbeing. You’ll jump through hoops to make them happy. So, how do you want your cus-

tomers, shippers, receivers and brokers to react when they’ve got an issue concerning your company? I’m presuming No. 3 is your pick. Exactly how do you go about providing that kind of high-end customer service when you’re a small or micro-motor carrier? It’s simple. Make sure the person who can really solve the problem is the one who answers a customer’s calls. Who’s that person in your company? If you’re the owner, that would be you. It’s not crazy. You must be thinking that you don’t have enough hours in a day now to take care of all your responsibilities, let alone taking all the calls of all the problems that come up in a day’s time—your company would be at a standstill. Let me be clear: I’m not suggesting you do something I haven’t been doing for years, both as a trucking operation owner and now in the business of providing information to the trucking industry.

THE RULES OF SERVICE

Following are a few basic rules we have in the company I co-own and manage: 1. All customer email comes directly to my partner or me. In this way, we can evaluate each email; if there’s a serious problem, we handle it quickly by providing the customer with an upper management resolution. As owners of the company, we have plenty of latitude to go far beyond what we could permit employees to do on their own. If it’s a simple request or problem, it also permits us to communicate with the customer that a) we’re very much aware of their issue; b) one of us has assigned a specific employee to handle it; and c) we’ll be monitoring it to make sure it’s resolved to their satisfaction. 2. All customer phone calls are

answered by my partner or me. We either handle the problem or direct it to a staff person for resolution. Again, that puts the customer at ease, knowing the top people in the company are aware of what’s going on and are monitoring the progress of the resolution. 3. While it should rarely occur, in those situations where an employee is unable to solve a customer problem, they need to be trained to know when to engage one of us in acheiving a final solution. Simply put, never argue with a customer. If they’re not happy with the resolution the employee has provided and it’s the last solution available to the employee, then return the customer to one of the partners for a resolution.

A TEAM OF SOLUTIONS

Our objective is to always take care of the customer. And just like a lateral pass works in football, if the receiver is blocked in his progress to the goal, give the ball to someone who has a clear path. In other words, it’s all about teamwork. I’ve followed this system of providing customer service and problem resolution for more than two decades, in offices with as few as two people to ones with as many as 20. When you have a problem with a company, you want to talk to the owner or CEO, and your customers are no different. If you can’t give your customers the resolution they want, at least give them the person they most want to talk to in the company. Keeping customers is just good business. Making the CNG choice By Wendy Leavitt, contributing editor 26 American Trucker/September 2012

Asking the right questions up front is mission critical

I

t is fair to say that natural gas has become the darling of the alternative fuel world, at least for now. The price differential between natural gas and diesel or gasoline is compelling, as is the fuel’s “green” emissions profile and the fact that the U.S. is producing lots of natural gas right here at home.

compression-ignited engines are slightly more fuel-efficient than spark-ignited, dedicated natural gas engines. However, a dual-fuel engine increases the complexity of the fuelstorage system by requiring storage of both types of fuel.

Compressed natural gas (CNG), in spite of its shorter operating range and generally lower GVW limitations, has enjoyed an early lead over liquefied natural gas (LNG). For many local or regional operations, it can be a rightsized solution for everything from beverage delivery vehicles to transit buses, sanitation trucks to the pickups in use by the parks department. If you are considering adding CNG vehicles to your own business, it is critical that you do your homework first, however. Natural gas requires some special considerations at virtually every step of the deployment process—from vehicle selection through financing and operations.

More truck OEMs are beginning to offer CNG vehicles that can be purchased right through a truck dealership. But most of the light- and medium-duty CNG vehicles in operation around the U.S. today resulted from a conversion process or retrofit, according to CNG Now, a website sponsored by companies in the natural gas industry. (Go to www.cngnow. com for more information.) Certified installers will usually only perform a CNG conversion on new or nearly new vehicles, CNG Now notes, and they use CNG “conversion kits” to do so. These kits must meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and/or California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements. Different states have different requirements, so you will want to make sure you know what the requirements are in your area before moving ahead with a CNG conversion.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHOICES

First of all, there is not just one type of CNG engine available. There are several choices, each with different performance characteristics. A Houston-based company called Nat G Conversions offers a good overview of the various types of CNG vehicles available: Dedicated: A dedicated CNG vehicle is one that runs only on CNG. Mixed fuel: Any vehicle that blends CNG with diesel or other fuels. In practice, there are some engines, like the Cummins Westport ISX, that use a small amount of diesel, but basically act as dedicated CNG engines. And some engines, like the Cummins Westport ISL G,

Go to

can operate on either CNG or LNG. Dual fuel: A dual-fuel system blends natural gas with diesel by injecting it into the turbocharger; however, the vehicle can still run on 100% diesel. That means if you run out of CNG you can keep going. Depending on the load, a dual-fuel system will use up to 50% CNG on average. Bi-fuel: Bi-fuel systems are also called “switchable” systems because you can switch between gasoline and CNG. The good news about all-CNG vehicles is that you don’t need to worry about buying two different fuels or about mandated emissions aftertreatment in the case of diesel; however, it does limit practical operating range. The good news about dual-fuel and bi-fuel vehicles is that so-called “range anxiety” goes away. According to the U.S. Dept. of Energy, “natural gas vehicles are similar to gasoline or diesel vehicles with regard to power, acceleration, and cruising speed. The driving range of natural gas vehicles is generally less than that of comparable gasoline and diesel vehicles because, with natural gas, less overall energy content can be stored in the same size tank as the more energy-dense gasoline or diesel fuels. Extra natural gas storage tanks or the use of LNG can help increase range for larger vehicles. In heavy-duty vehicles, dual-fuel,

FUELING AND GVW

Andy Douglas, national sales manager for specialty markets at Kenworth Truck Co., recently prepared a brief guide to help fleets considering natural gas, either CNG or LNG. He stresses the importance of taking into account the operating range for natural gas vehicles as well as the load you need to carry. “In general, if your operating range is over 400 mi., it is usually best to go with LNG,” Douglas says. “Under 400 mi., CNG can be an option.

American Trucker/September 2012 27

cover story CNG can be used up to 66,000 lbs. GVW, with some severe-duty applications going up to 80,000 lbs. GVW.” The task of building out a natural gas fueling infrastructure in the U.S. and Canada has been picking up speed over the past year, so range will, over time, become less of an issue. Even if natural gas is readily available along most truck lanes, drivers will still have to accept the fact that more frequent fuel stops are a reality with natural gas—especially CNG. The good news is that drivers don’t need special training to pump CNG, and many CNG stations compress the gas into onsite storage cylinders, notes Douglas, which allows it to be dispensed quickly. There is sometimes a tendency to over-spec when choosing natural gas fuel tanks, Douglas adds, since operators are in the habit of carrying a two- or three-day supply of diesel onboard. However, “in many cases, it is often impractical to carry much more than a day’s supply of natural gas,” he says. “Natural gas fuel tanks can also be expensive, so consider carrying only enough fuel for a full day’s work, plus a 10% reserve.”

HOW ABOUT ROI? Chesapeake Energy is certainly not a small fleet, but this megaoperation has lessons to offer about the ROI on CNG trucks that are applicable to carriers of any size. Chesapeake began to convert its entire fleet of almost 6,000 vehicles (80% trucks and 20% sedans and SUVs) to run on compressed natural gas in late 2007. According to Nate Pumphrey, director of fleet operations for the company, the conversion project has been going well. What’s more, the payback is there, too. “You have to remarket CNG vehicles where there is a demand and where there is [infrastructure and

In-house maintenance of NG engines requires special monitoring technologies. maintenance] support,” Pumphrey notes. “We trade our vehicles at 90,000 mi., while they are still under powertrain warranty. Recently, we’ve actually begun seeing residual val-

ues. There is an extremely strong demand for CNG vehicles at auction. Natural gas vehicles can command $5,000 to $6,000 more than their gasoline-powered counterparts.

CNG checklist

I

f you are considering adding CNG-powered trucks to your business for the first time, it is important to do a little homework first. Here is a checklist of critical questions: ❑ What will be the operating range for the CNG trucks? Generally speaking, it should be less than 400 mi. unless you are going to spec a dual-fuel or bi-fuel system. ❑ What loads will the CNG vehicles have to handle? ❑ Are there CNG fueling stations available (that can fuel trucks and not just cars) where you will need them? ❑ Does your state or region have a natural gas fuel tax? ❑ How will you handle maintenance—in-house or outsourced? If you plan to do your own maintenance, be sure to find out what it will take to upfit your shop and train your technicians to handle natural gas. ❑ Do you want to purchase a new CNG truck through a truck dealership or work directly with an independent upfitter to modify existing equipment? ❑ Are there incentives to purchase CNG trucks in your area? What about for used trucks that will be retrofit? ❑ Is financing available if you need it? Not everyone is offering financing for natural gas trucks. ❑ What certifications are required in your area for CNG vehicles? EPA certification? CARB certification? Both? ❑ What warranties exist? ❑ When do you expect to trade in your CNG trucks? Fuel tanks have to be inspected at 30,000 mi. Tank replacement, if required, can be very expensive. ❑ What are you expecting in terms of a payback period on this investment? Are you considering residual value in that calculation? If so, is there a market for used CNG vehicles in your area?

“We are cycling them back pretty early, we know,” he adds. “Tere is a temptation to keep them longer for the fuel cost-saving benefit, but it is a balancing act when you factor in maintenance. Te CNG vehicles require an additional filter change. And every three years, the fuel tanks have to be inspected and recertified. On the other hand, the cleaner fuel is reducing some maintenance costs. Most of our vehicles run about 30,000 mi. per year. “If other fleets would like to see our numbers, we are an open book,” Pumphrey says. “We are excited to share information about this.”

Truckers need to realize that natural gas vehicles require more frequent fill-ups.

maintaining Cng truCks Maintenance also requires some special considerations when it comes to natural gas-powered vehicles. If you do your own maintenance, your shop will require some upfitting to make it safe to service CNG trucks. For starters, shops must have methane detection systems and adequate air flow to comply with applicable federal codes, primarily the National Fire Protection Association Code 52 and Code 30. Heating systems will probably also have to be replaced, particularly those that use an open flame, such as waste oil heaters. States and municipalities may also have additional regulations of their own concerning maintenance of natural gas vehicles. While natural gas-powered vehicles have much in common with gasoline and diesel vehicles, technicians working on natural gas trucks should be trained and certified, as well. Technician training programs are beginning to spring up around the country, such as at West Virginia University’s National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium. Many fleets using natural gas vehicles are electing to outsource maintenance rather than make the required investment in facilities

and training. Ryder, for example, expects maintaining natural gas vehicles to become a differentiating factor for the company, according to Scott Perry, vice president-supply management for Ryder Fleet Management Solutions. “Maintaining natural gas vehicles is a major obstacle [for truckers] to market en-

try,” he says. Truck OEMs are also stepping up to help natural gas customers put good maintenance programs into place. “Dealer service is key,” says Douglas. “We will not build a [natural gas] truck without a great service plan in place. Tat is what needs to be done.” AT

Coolants

N

No matter the season, weather or economic predictions, it seems there’s always something for you to research, check out or look into. The continually changing information on coolants is no exception. Here’s the latest on these critical liquids to help your fleet’s engines run better. One of the growing trends is factory fills with extended life coolants. According to Jeff Snyder, industrial brand specialist for Chevron North America, part of Chevron Corp., customers are interested in learning more about extended life coolants, including how the coolants differ. “Environmental regulation changes have caused the need for ancillary equipment additions to diesel engines like EGR and SCR systems that [contribute] additional thermal loads to the cooling system, placing upwards of 35% more heat into the coolant,” Snyder says. “Although [total] cooling system capacities have increased in size, they have not increased equivalent to the additional thermal loads placed on the system. The net effect is a smaller cooling system per unit energy that puts additional stresses on the coolant product.” Snyder cautions that not all extended life coolants are designed the same. “The proprietary Chevron Delo ELC family formulations are better designed to handle the additional thermal loads of the modern diesel engine,” he says. “This can be seen by Chevron Delo ELC’s impressive pH control and longest service life claims in the industry.” The Chevron Delo ELC service life is 750,000 mi./ 12,000 hrs./8 yrs. with no extender needed, or 1 million mi./20,000 hrs./8 yrs. with extender added at 500,000 mi./10,000 hrs./4 yrs. Over at Shell Lubricants, Stede Granger, OEM technical manager, says customers are seeking high-performance coolants that meet OEM requirements “using the same or similar coolant chemistry as factory-filled in the vehicle at a reasonable cost. “In order to meet fuel economy and emissions requirements, heavy-duty OEMs are increasing power densities using turbochargers, inner coolers, high-efficiency aluminum radiators, and multiple cooling system loops to provide the necessary cooling,” Granger points out. “Since these engine and cooling systems contain a signifi-

cantly greater amount of aluminum, one phenomenon that has been observed is that nitrite-containing coolants may react with aluminum components causing unwanted reactions that can [cause] damage.” To counteract this, Shell offers nitrite-free HD ELC coolants that provide greater aluminum protection, he says. Shell also formulates its coolants with greater oxidation and thermal stability to combat the heat increase of engines. Lubegard offers a 2-in-1 coolant treatment that it said helps prevent corrosion and reduce temperatures. The company says the product prevents buildup of scales, deposits, and slime that cause overheating; extends the life of water pump impellers and seals; and is chemically engineered to reduce the surface tension of coolant, allowing it to more deeply penetrate metal surfaces at vital heat-transfer areas to prevent engine overheating. Old World Industries offers the Final Charge Global Extended Life coolant/antifreeze, a heavy-duty coolant said to protect cooling systems for 600,000 mi. of on-road use with the addition of the Final Charge Extender at 300,000 to 400,000 mi. You can’t grease it, if you can’t ’t find fi d it!

Use your existing Pressure Washer without crawling under your truck. It’s as easy as coupling your hose to our NEW Undercarriage Washer and guiding it under your chassis.

And now you can use it as a Surface Cleaner, too! Great for cleaning hard surfaces like garage floors and exterior walks and ramps.

At Sentry Insurance, we’ve been insuring truckers since 1991. In that time, our policyholders have driven more than 18 billion miles! That’s the equivalent of driving around the Earth 700,000 times – or – taking 75,000 trips to the moon. Our insured drivers put on a lot of miles and Sentry has been with them every step of the way.
