I’ve talked about how employee health and wellness are becoming increasingly more critical to the bottom line of everyone in business. But this year, as those with trucking operations know, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has added a big new regulatory wrinkle to the wellness issue. According to Dr. Clayton Cowl, a physician in preventive, occupational and aeroMedical exams space medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Minare not to be nesota, the impact of the agency’s new rules, which go into effect in May 2014, are fairly taken lightly straightforward. First, medical exams will only count if they are performed by a specially trained and certified healthcare provider. Second, the rules make it more difficult for drivers who fail their exams to “doctor shop” to find examiners who will pass them, and examiners will likely be held more accountable if they aren’t thorough, Cowl warned. Cowl stressed that the Dept. of Transportation medical evaluation is oftentimes the only opportunity a driver might have for preventive medical care. “Granted, it’s more of a regulatory burden on the drivers and their examiners, but I also view this as an opportunity for healthcare providers to make a difference in their lives,” Dr. Cowl said. “It’s their chance to emphasize the importance of preventive healthcare and get them pointed in the right direction.” This is definitely something to think about as the focus on truckers’ health and wellness is only going to increase in the months ahead. Re-refined oil put to the test
In the rear-view S
T
o prove that its recycled and re-refined EcoPower engine oil can withstand the long-term wear and tear dished out by trucking operations, Safety-Kleen, with the help of Cooke Trucking, subjected it to a million-mile test that’s lasted nearly five years. “Our objective with this test is to open the eyes of fleet decision-makers,” explained Curt Knapp, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Safety-Kleen. Safety-Kleen engaged the services of third-party test firm Infineum back in 2008 to put the EcoPower engine oil through its paces. Infineum then tapped Mount Airy, NC-based Cooke for two of its Peterbilt 387 tractors equipped with Cummins ISX 455-hp. 15L engines to be the test vehicles, with each of those trucks in coast-to-coast team driver operation. Pat Fetterman, Infineum’s industry liaison advisor, said those two tractors typically accrued a 6,000-mi. roundtrip. The tractors were loaded out to 65,000 lbs. with mixed dry goods, mainly furniture, in reefer trailers to the West Coast while carrying 80,000 lbs. worth of produce back East. To beef up the severity of the test, Infineum set the drain interval for the EcoPower engine oil at 40,000 mi., well over the 25,000 drain interval recommended by Cummins. Infineum also sampled the EcoPower oil in both trucks at 15,000, 25,000 and when drained at

40,000 mi. for analysis. At the teardown, Fetterman noted that the engine components from both of Cooke’s tractors “looked exceptionally good for 1 million miles of use,” adding that “they look like what I’d expect them to look like if good maintenance practices were combined with a premium ‘virgin’ engine oil in this type of service.” By good, Fetterman meant that the engine pistons and lining showed little wear, with no cracks on any of the valve intake rocker arms, among other important metrics. Fetterman also pointed out that little to no wear occurred despite the heavy soot loading of the oil from heavy use of exhaust gas recirculation technology. Both engines used to test EcoPower were 2007-compliant, so the oil would carry a 4 to 6% load of soot in suspension by the time it reached the 40,000-mi. drain point. “Based on everything I’ve seen from this test, the oil drain interval could be pushed out to 50,000 mi. and engine life could be extended beyond 1 million miles,” Fetterman said. —SEAN KILCARR

ometimes you need to look behind you to know what’s ahead. We all need to apply to our trucking businesses what we learned when we were taught to drive an 18-wheeler; focus on what’s ahead of us through the windshield and keep our eyes moving to know what’s coming from the side and what’s gaining on us from behind. Many times it’s what we’ve already passed that will return to haunt us. A car tailgating an 18-wheeler is a danger to the occupants of that automobile. It also puts truckers at risk of injury or death caused by the tailgating driver running up underneath the trailer. In addition to delays and lawsuits, cost increases as a result of such an accident increase the financial impact for those involved. In business, the risks are very similar if you don’t look back before moving forward. The past will determine the future, and we must learn from our successes and our failures in order to move our trucking companies forward. There will always be times when putting the company in reverse is necessary to survive, and that’s when those rear-view mirrors to the past become invaluable. Natural gas interest strong in used market
T
he North American market for heavy-duty, natural gaspowered commercial vehicles will rise steadily over the next few years, reaching about 18,500 units by 2016, according to Andy Douglas, national sales manager for specialty vehicles at Kenworth Truck. “We expect that about 2% of the total heavy-duty vehicle build in North America will be natural gas,” he noted. That means about 5,100 heavy-duty, natural gas-powered trucks will probably be sold this year; about 9,500 in 2013; and about 12,500 in 2014. These are small numbers relatively speaking, but the growth in demand is still significant year-overyear. A market is also developing for used natural gas trucks, Douglas told American Trucker. “Not a week goes by that I don’t get a call about used natural gas trucks,” he said. Part of the reason for fleet interest is the current spread between the cost of natural gas and the cost of diesel. “The price of natural gas over the past three years has been consistently lower than diesel, in some cases by as much as $2 per diesel gallon equivalent,” Douglas said. Progress is also being made on developing a natural gas fueling infrastructure and that is “a real game changer,” he said. Douglas has helped prepare a guide for fleets ready to seriously explore the purchase of natural gas vehicles, including asking these critical questions: ❑ What type of natural gas (compressed and/or liquid) is available where you need it? ❑ What is your operating range?
10 American Trucker/October 2012
Kenworth is seeing increasing interest in used natural gas vehicles. ❑ How easy/possible is it to fuel your trucks at the natural gas stations that are convenient for you? “Dealer service is key,” Douglas added. “We will not build a natural gas truck without a great service plan in place.” The popularity of natural gas does not mean that hybrids and other alternative power options are no longer viable, according to Douglas. Far from it. “There continues to be an interest in hybrids,” he said, “although it has currently declined a bit.” The business cases for hybrids versus natural gas trucks are different, he told American Trucker. With natural gas, the value proposition centers on the cost differential at the pump between natural gas and diesel. For diesel-electric hybrids, it is about using less fuel overall. Right now, the business case may be a little better for natural gas, he observed, because the payback period may be somewhat shorter. Kenworth said that market share for the company hit 14.1% in 2011 and is already at 15.7% year-todate.

arrier Transicold has added a comprehensive diagnostic application to its APX control system. Virtual Technician monitors trailer refrigeration unit operation to identify potential problems. “The Virtual Tech application is like having a ride-along service technician watching the unit’s performance,” said Mark Fragnito, Carrier Transicold product manager-electronics. “It helps take the guesswork out of refrigeration unit service, making troubleshooting easier and faster, and improving equipment uptime in the process. ” Monitored components include refrigeration, mechanical and electrical as well as the APX control system itself. If the Virtual Tech application senses a problem, it activates the refrigeration unit’s amber external warning light to alert the driver, and the alarm LED flashes on the control system display module. When the alarm button is pushed, a text message describing the problem will appear on the APX display module. If a specific control module needs repair or replacement, that module’s red fault light glows for easy identification. For units equipped with telematics capability, the Virtual Tech application is capable of relaying system status and faults to a centralized dispatcher by way of Carrier’s DataTrak option. When the APX control system is operating in “technician mode,” the Virtual Tech application provides analytic and diagnostic information on the display module’s dashboard. The application also records system operation data so that performance reports can be reviewed. The APX control system is standard with Carrier’s new 2500 APX and 2100 APX models in the X2 series of trailer units. www.transicold.carrier.com

Proper torque checks
A
After a decade of helping bang the drum promoting proper torque, it appears the effort has not gone to waste. Most fleets and truck tire service providers fully recognize the importance of tightening fasteners with the correct amount of force. Thousands of torque wrenches have been purchased in the industry. And in a sign of progress, many of those wrenches are periodically checked and recalibrated because they so often. Setting proper are used With the stakes at all-time high, trucktorque remains a an ing companies now reto do business with safety concern fuse vendors who still subscribe to the old “goodand-tight” method with an impact wrench. A loose tire and wheel on the highway is a 200-lb. runaway wrecking ball that will destroy most things in its path. Since the fastener torque on the offending assembly cannot be determined prior to the accident, most investigators will check the remaining wheels for proper torque. If the vehicle has experienced good-and-tight service, the case against the trucking company will start to build. Fortunately, research does not indicate that a significant number of accidents are caused by “wheel-offs.” In fact, the American government does not specifically require proper wheel fastener torque nor does it constitute a direct violation under CSA. As long as the wheels are not cracked or broken and the bolt holes are not elongated, the vehicle is not in violation if none of the fasteners are missing or loose. And since CSA only assesses two points out of ten for wheel violations, they are not considered to be major safety issues. But that doesn’t mean the goal has been reached. While wheel-related accidents are few and far between
14 American Trucker/October 2012
from a statistical standpoint, the potential for a fatality is always present. The torque wrench has never been a magic wand because clamping force is still what keeps the wheels on the vehicle. Everything from the condition of the fasteners and components to the seating of the brake drum can have a negative effect on clamping force and cause a properly torqued assembly to become loose down the road. Problems like fatigued fasteners and improperly seated brake drums are difficult to spot in the field during installation. The best method for identifying most wheel end problems is to check the fastener torque after the first 50 to 100 mi. to ensure none of the bolts have lost tension. But studies have shown that a few left- and right-hand turns combined with some railroad tracks or speed bumps can create enough flexing in the bolted joint to cause an out-of-service condition to become evident. Truck tire service providers commonly include a 50 to 100 mi. torque check on every invoice so the driver is warned after wheels have been installed. If the wheels end up becoming loose a few hundred or a thousand miles down the road, the installer will point to the warning and request proof that procedure was followed. The bottom line? The owner and operator of the vehicle are responsible for the condition and maintenance of every mechanical component. Wheel issues do not appear to be on the CSA radar, and the growing popularity of properly torqued fasteners should keep it that way. The next frontier is to find a way to make torque checks part of every wheel maintenance program. It won’t be easy, but neither was introducing the torque wrench and look what that has done for the industry. AT

MUNICIPAL
Creating unity Varied fleet looks for common goals

Improving the operations of a single fleet is one thing; doing it for a series of disparate fleets under municipal budget considerations is quite another. That’s why a central management team in New York City meets regularly to share expertise and coordinate best practices and strategies. “We’re working hard on a coordinated effort for the management of our fleet,” says Keith Kerman, chief fleet management officer in New York City. “Moving forward on several fronts, we’re sharing ideas and implementing the best processes and practices we have in place throughout the city’s agency fleets.” The New York City fleet includes 27,000 vehicles operated by 60 city agencies. Over 23,000 of those units are fielded by seven agencies, known collectively as the fleet federation, including the Dept. of Sanitation, Dept. of Transportation (DOT), Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP), Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Dept. of Correction, New York Police Dept., and New York Fire Dept. The management arm for the entire city fleet,
including the other 53 agency fleets, is NYC Fleet at the Dept. of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS). “Historically, the client 53 agency fleets under DCAS had one management program, but the major fleet federation agencies employed their own practices,” relates Kerman. “Not only was there duplication of effort in some areas, we weren’t taking advantage of the best practices employed by some agencies.”
REDUCING FUEL One area of focus is a program for reducing fuel use, a part of PlaNYC, the citywide environmental program that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2017. “Based on success at the parks and sanitation departments,” Kerman explains, “we’re pilot-testing a biodiesel program for all agencies. In the last few months DOT, DEP and corrections have joined that effort, and next year we hope to add emergency services vehicles.” Alternative fuel vehicle programs are also in place and being developed

further. There are already over 5,000 hybrids in the NYC fleet, including cars, SUVs, and a growing number of Kenworth medium-duty trucks with Eaton diesel–electric systems. Additionally, the city has 100 Chevrolet Volts in service, and is finalizing contracts for electric Ford Focus and Nissan Leaf vehicles. The management of resources is also dependent on the third part of the city fleet’s strategy, a comprehensive fuel use tracking and accountability initiative. Using systems from San Antonio, TX-based E.J. Ward at 70 in-house fueling facilities, the fleet’s managers are monitoring usage patterns and analyzing data that they share with city agencies in discussions about fuel use reduction targets and how to effectively deploy vehicles. According to Kerman, a related initiative is a new car share program. Following a two-year pilot program at DOT, the city has contracted with Cambridge, MA-based Zipcar to implement citywide availability of the company’s on-demand vehicle system. “Pooling and sharing vehicles within agency fleets is helping reduce the size of our non-emergency vehicle roster without impacting services,” Kerman says. Procurement is another area of focus for the NYC fleet. Annually, NYC contracts $220 million in vehicle purchases, $100 million in parts and service, and another $100 million in fuel. “Agencies have common needs but have historically had separate specification, bid and contract processes,” says Kerman. “Through the contributions of vehicle, maintenance and operations experts from across the city, we are maximizing opportunities for improvement and developing programs that benefit everyone.”

T
ime is money in the emergency roadside repair business—and no one knows that better than Mark Shackleford. In 2003, Shackleford established a repair shop in Rossville, GA, along with a fleet of seven 24-hour emergency response service trucks covering the major highway corridors in Georgia and Tennessee plus parts of Alabama. “When I started out, I did everything no one else wanted to do—working at night, on weekends and holidays,” he explains. “Today we use an on call rotation for our roadside techs, with all of them sharing overnight, weekend and holiday duty.”
To provide faster and more efficient service, Shackleford has gone so far as designing his own storage bins and racks for his trouble trucks. Yet the initial parts search still proved a vexing hurdle for Shackleford’s team as his roadside technicians relied on data—especially for fuel and oil filters—contained in well-thumbed paper catalogs either at hand or back at the shop. So he kept searching for a method or tool his technicians could use to conduct parts research right from the roadside, without having to call back to dispatch for help or spend precious minutes tearing through dog-eared reference books.
A
and locate any filter needed during a service call. “And since we no longer use catalogs and manuals, we rely completely on the Luber-finer application to provide us with the information we need,” he notes. In addition to providing quick product search and cross-reference information, the mobile site allows his crew to quickly and easily look up the nearest Luber-finer distributor or reseller. “We keep a lot of parts on our trucks—from hoses to filters and brass connectors—so we can take care of almost any kind of roadside problem,” Shackleford adds. “We’re also constantly changing out parts that become obsolete or that aren’t required with much frequency, and the mobile app helps us there, too.” It’s all part of his effort to bring to bear as many modern-day resources as possible so his technicians can get roadside repairs done faster and with less hassle. “We do a lot more work on the front end so we save time and money both for ourselves and our customers at the roadside,” he explains. “In the end, tools like this mobile app make us more efficient, which helps get the customer back on the road a whole lot quicker.”
PROBLEM
s a long-time user of Luber-finer filter products, Shackleford got introduced to a new mobile application the company started: a parts “look-up tool” designed as an easy one-click reference device for filter product search and cross-reference information to help speed up filter changes. “All of my technicians use either Android smartphones or Apple iPhones so this mobile app fits how we work perfectly,” he explains. “We can even use it on tablets, which we’re also starting to use.” It may not seem like a big deal, Shackleford says, but every minute counts on an emergency roadside repair job. “We’ve got a 30-min. dispatch window when a customer calls in with a problem, and we provide them with continual updates: when our techs are on the road, how far they are from the disabled truck, when they arrive, what the diagnosis is, and estimated time to repair,” he points out. “When we’re working on a truck with a load of freight in the trailer, customers almost don’t care how much the repair will cost. They want that vehicle back on the road.” With the Luber-finer mobile app, Shackleford says his technicians can efficiently and accurately cross-reference

ne of the many challenges facing a small or micromotor carrier is that it requires several different and diverse skills to be successful. Three of the greatest skills are proprietary to each individual carrier: dispatching style, customer base, and hauling rate structure. The knowledge and information contained within those skills are what defines your company and separates you from your competitors. Provide this information to only those who need to know, as this information has a direct, positive benefit to your operation. With that said, another challenging area for many micro-carriers is the cost of expansion. One of the least costly means of expanding and growing your business
is through partnerships with other businesses. These augment your skills and knowledge by adding another company’s expertise to the benefit of both companies. So, who are some potential part-
ners? How about an already-established customer that you could work with to provide them with an advantage over their competitors? In return for helping them reduce costs in other areas, they would provide your carrier with a higher hauling rate. For example, say you have multiple trailers already loaded with their products (or stock from their suppliers) parked on your trucking company’s drop lot. This gives them savings in two areas: one, they’re not having to warehouse the load or include it in inventory until they need the product, saving the cost of

storage; and two, at the end of the year, since the vendor has shipped the product and the customer hasn’t taken delivery, neither has to include the items stored in your trailers as inventory, thus saving on taxes.
BroKErinG a dEaL
Another potential partner would be a freight broker who has shippers requiring specialized services that the brokers’ current carrier base is either unable or unwilling to provide; for example, a shipper that needs ground service rather than dock delivery, or placement and assembly of the delivered items at the receiver’s place of business. A third option would be a motor carrier that has equipment and/ or skills you and your drivers don’t have; for example, you may specialize in van loads, but a customer comes to you requesting flatbed service for a new product they’re offering their customers. While not in your plan to expand into flatbed service, wouldn’t it be best to keep your customer by having the other carrier haul the new products? Following are some questions you and your prospective partners should ask one another to determine if the partnership will help both companies work together more effectively: Carrier to customer/broker 1. What are the biggest challenges you face concerning your shipping or receiving? 2. How can my carrier help you meet these challenges? 3. What’s the best means for my carrier to deliver these solutions? 4. Are there gaps between what my carrier currently provides you and what you really need from us? 5. What are some other problems with which we can help you? 6. Are we providing services you don’t need?

Customer/broker to carrier 1. What are the biggest challenges you face concerning your pickups or deliveries? 2. How can my company help your carrier meet these challenges? 3. What’s the best means for my company to implement these solutions? 4. Are there gaps between what my company currently provides your drivers and what you really need from us? 5. What are some other problems with which we can help you? 6. Are we providing things you don’t need? Answering these questions will help you and your business partners reach solutions that are beneficial to all concerned. Te idea here is to establish strategic relationships with key customers and brokers, thus creating an alliance that results in more profitable business for each of you. Tis solidifies a bond between your companies, making it more difficult for a competitor to threaten the relationship. Here are a few more ideas for partnering with customers and brokers: q Have your customers come to your trucking facility and meet with department heads outside the sales department. One-onone, face-to-face interaction between customers/brokers and key people in your organization creates a tighter bond between the two businesses. q Use social media to link internal functions with external customers. Set up a private LinkedIn group to keep the information flowing between customers and departments within your carrier. Tis will help alert you to problems and challenges before they occur. q Have representatives of all the impacted departments attend regular meetings designed to improve

processes for those departments and the operation as a whole. q Map out a communications flowchart to ensure that the proper departments within each organization are communicating with each other for optimal results; then make sure department representatives in each company have met face-to-face. q Bring key personnel from the respective departments together regularly through onsite or online meetings and social media. The goal is to better understand the requirements of each department and each company, and how each can add greater benefit to the business relationship.
a word of caution
Te rule of not letting any single company or broker represent any more than 30% of your trucking company’s revenue still stands. Avoid this ‘all eggs in one basket’ approach when developing strategic partnerships. Remember, the greater the percentage of revenue a shipper or broker represents, the more potential for a negative impact if that relationship is severed. Being a small carrier or company doesn’t limit you to not using large company programs and procedures. A major advantage of a smaller organization is that it tends to be less bureaucratic. By tailoring programs and procedures to both the size and scope of your operation, you will discover ways to develop strong and strategic relationships. Tis strategic partnering will better sustain your carrier and provide greater opportunity for growth for all of you. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. More truckers are using chrome to stand out from the crowd
ress up any truck with a slick paint job, banks of bright lights, and gobs of chrome accessories and you’ll grab the attention of just about anyone anywhere you go in the U.S. Yet it’s also common knowledge that taking a truck from a simple cargo-hauling big rig to a rolling work of art can cost really big bucks—the kinds of bucks that often are hard to come by in the freight world these days. However, more truckers are choosing to take that “leap of chrome” these days—and not just to feed a hungry ego. A lot of small fleets, for example, the kind operating 15 to 50 trucks, can be found turning one or two of their tractors into glitzy “show models” as a way to reward veteran drivers and recruit new ones. Others are finding that even a little bit of glam goes a long way in terms of getting the attention of customers. Turning their trucks into rolling calling cards of sorts appeal to a shipper’s pride in getting their freight pulled by such unique pieces of decorated aluminum and steel.
IMAGE APPEAL
“I’d say about 60% to 70% of our customers in the chrome shop are doing it simply for self-satisfaction; they want their trucks to display a unique ‘personality’ and appealing look,” explains Bryan Martin, owner of 4 State Trucks and head of the “Chrome Shop Mafia” made famous on the Country Music Television show Trick My Truck.
Go to
“But there is a growing percentage of customers— individuals and small fleets alike—that are ‘going chrome’ for different reasons: to create an appealing image for clients, to attract and retain experienced drivers, or a little of both,” he says. “We’ve got three small fleets in our shop right now, each one operating between 30 to 50 trucks, that are each dressing up one of their tractors to send to trade shows and other public events to help their recruitment efforts,” Martin adds. “In fact, over the last eight to nine months we’ve seen a real uptick in small to medium-sized fleets asking us to do a truck ‘up to the nines’ for them.” Kevin Vinson is one driver that readily responds to such glamorous incentives. A 10-year veteran with Hoewing Trucking, a seven-truck fleet out of Canton, MO, Vinson is assigned to drive a one-of-a-kind rig by his employer not only to haul a variety of goods but enter into show truck competitions where possible. “The only time I get nervous about driving this nice truck is when judges are looking at it,” he

told American Trucker during the 2012 Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition in Joplin, MO, earlier this year. “It’s my pride and joy.” Looking different and thus catching the eye of potential customers is why Chad and Lisa Berry invested time and money into the family’s purple and white tractor-trailer— not green and gold, even though they are based out of Appleton, WI, where the traditional colors of the nearby Green Bay Packers NFL team typically hold sway. “We wanted to be different; to stand out,” says Lisa Berry, who handles the administrative side of the business while Chad does the driving. “Besides, I’ve always been a fan of purple and white.”
REFURB VS. NEW
Several other factors are at work in this ongoing chrome revival as well, 4 State’s Martin says. For starters, while his chrome shop saw work fall steeply off in 2008 and 2009,with 2010 only a passable year, a strong resurgence began in 2011 that continues well into this year, in part due to the market entry of higher priced 2010 emissionscompliant trucks. “A lot of our customers, who typically operate eight- and nine-yearold trucks, got to the point where they’d normally buy a new truck, and then they saw the new sticker prices,” he explains. According to industry data, on average, OEMs added roughly $1,800 to $3,000 to the base cost of a Class 8 truck in 2002 to meet the first round of federal exhaust emissions regulations, followed by an extra $5,000 to $10,000 per

cover story truck to meet the 2007 rules, and another $6,700 to $10,000 to meet the final round of emissions mandates in 2010. In sum, then, new 2010-complaint trucks can cost as much as $23,000 more than 2002 models—a big hike that’s convincing some of Martin’s customers to refurbish and rebuild their old trucks rather than buy new ones. “That’s what’s been happening over the last year and a half to a degree,” he says. “They’re finding they can completely overhaul their old truck and engine for less than buying new as well as afford to spend a little extra to make it look nicer and different than it was before.”
4 State Trucks’ Bryan Martin believes more truckers are choosing to refurbish their current rigs rather than buy new.
It ain’t chrome all on its own …
C
hrome shops rarely operate in a vacuum in the trucking industry, simply because there isn’t enough steady business to keep any one of them going. That’s why many of the best chrome shops in the country —like Bryan Martin’s “Chrome Shop Mafia” — function within a larger parts & service structure, which, in the “Mafia’s” case, is 4 State Trucks. Made famous on the Country Music Television show Trick My Truck, Martin says he specifically expanded 4 State’s new, used and salvage parts mix at his 40,000-sq.-ft. retail location just outside Joplin, MO, to create a “one-stop shop” environment designed to meet almost any parts need for a wider range of customers. “The key for us is parts diversity,” he says. “We don’t want all of our eggs in one basket. That’s why we offer new parts, used parts, and a ‘yard sale’ style setup for salvage parts so we can appeal to all levels of parts needs within trucking.” Martin’s philosophy is to offer a Walmart Super Store retail environment for parts, yet couple it with a mom-andpop approach to service, an approach that’s worked successfully for 4 State
Trucks since its founding in 1979. “We figure if we get someone in here once looking for a particular component, and we have it in stock and win them over with our service, they will always come back,” he says. Martin credits that approach to helping 4 State Trucks weather the Great Recession and sluggish economic recovery of the past few years. “When times get tough, there’s a lot more demand for used and salvage parts,” he adds. “And when times get better, sales of new parts, chrome accessories, full chrome shop work, etc., begin to rise. We want to be in a position to serve both ends of the parts market so we keep business coming in during the rough patches.” The same philosophy holds sway at Outcast Kustoms, another premier chrome shop and collision repair facility located in Mooresville, NC, a town located just off I-77 on the outskirts of Charlotte, NC. Outcast is the brainchild of April and Kelvin Locklear, who opened their first chrome, fabrication and repair shop in Florence, SC, back in January 2000, followed by the Mooresville location in July 2011. Reality TV fame in no small part helped April and Kelvin expand their chrome shop

business— just as it did 4 State’s Martin. Kelvin served as the lead designer for a time on the same Trick My Truck program, as well as stints with Speed TV’s American Trucker program and the Travel Channel show Outrageous Rigs. Locklear’s Mooresville shop, officially called the K&L Chrome Shop and Collision Center, is a 46,000-sq.-ft. facility that includes two paint booths (one large enough to hold big rigs, the other a smaller unit for painting body components), a plasma cutting machine for sheet metal fabrication, and all sorts of other truck repair equipment. While crafting custom trucks and conducting assorted chrome work is what fires the creative juices of the Outcast team, it’s not steady business. The real bread and butter of Locklear’s operation is collision repair work for truck owners, carriers, municipal fleets, and just about anybody else who walks in the door. Indeed, Outcast is looking to get into front-end alignment work to further diversify its service offerings as well as its customer base. Chrome looks good, but it usually just can’t pay the bills by itself.

Raising a ‘rat rod’
A big old-school B-Series 3406 Caterpillar engine powers the “Junk Yard Dog.”
The “Junk Yard Dog” got some last-minute work from the Chrome Shop Mafia, based out of 4 State Trucks in Joplin, MO.

In automotive circles, the term “rat rod” refers to a style of custom car that imitates or exaggerates the hot rod designs of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s while also appearing “unfinished,” that is, a vehicle that contains only the bare essentials to allow it to be driven. In the world of trucking, however, a rat rod is a commercial vehicle that starts out literally as nothing more than a hunk of junk before ultimately getting turned into a customized piece of rolling glory— all while doing so on the cheap. And it’s that particular philosophical thread that prompted Cory Bowen out of Seneca, MO, to go the chrome route. Affectionately called the “Junk Yard Dog,” his rig is weaved together from a 1994 Peterbilt 379 flat top he found headed for the scrap heap in Amarillo, TX. “It was a completely trashed truck headed for the salvage yard,” Bowen says. “But I saw it and decided to prove a point: that you could build a good-looking, show-worthy custom truck on a budget, just with odds, ends, and salvaged parts.” The only “original” parts on Bowen’s “Dog” are the cab and the frame; the BSeries 3406 Caterpillar engine, Eaton 18spd. manual transmission, axles, wheels, sleeper berth, exhaust stacks, etc., all came from scrapped trucks with different vehicle identification numbers and from various salvage yards. All were expertly pieced together with the help of the Chrome Shop Mafia in Joplin, MO. Bowen is particularly proud that truly “new” items are a rarity on the “Dog.” “The only things new on my truck are the seats and the deck plate. Everything else is scrap and salvage,” he explains. “For example, the entire cab interior came out of a wrecked truck. I got the fuel tanks from an old show truck, found some old wheels and polished them out, and got the exhaust stacks right out of a salvage yard.”

Held earlier this year outside Joplin, MO, top honors — along with $10,000— for the 30th annual Shell Rotella SuperRigs competition went to John O’Keefe, who snagged “Best of Show” honors with his 2007 Peterbilt 379 EXHD Legacy dubbed “Low Life.” The owners of O’Keefe’s winning truck, Todd and Beth Roccapriore, of Hebron, CT, donated that $10,000 cash prize to the YMCA of Joplin, joining $100,000 raised by the Shell SuperRigs event for “All Roads

O’Keefe’s “Low Life” rig also captured first place in the Best Interior, Best Theme, Best Chrome, Best Lights and Best Engine categories. Local resident Paul Rissler of California, MO, won Best of Show first runner-up and $4,000 with his 1996 Peterbilt 379 and T.J. Tire inflation
I
It’s well-known that maintaining correct tire pressure improves fuel mileage. But proper pressure can also improve tire life and reduce downtime caused by onroad tire failures. Manufacturers are working hard at incorporating the latest technologies into their products to ensure your tires remain properly inflated for the long haul. While users generally acknowledge the benefits of an onboard tire inflation system, there remains some trepidation about the systems. “One top concern is how easy it’s going to be to maintain,” says Frank Sonzala, executive vice president at Pressure Systems International (PSI). “The Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) has very low or nonexistent maintenance requirements with only one moving part. Also, the newer hoses on MTIS are designed for easy unscrewing of the hose from the Thru-T with a checkpoint right at that end.” MTIS by PSI comes with the optional ThermAlert, a device that alerts the driver and/or company of potential problems with an overheated wheel end.
Constant tire monitoring can improve mpg, tire life
LET THE AIR OUT “A current issue is whether it’s ever necessary to take air out of a perfectly good tire,” Sonzala continues. “From a safety standpoint, it’s very risky to ever let air out of a tire automatically while the vehicle is moving, and tire manufacturers support that view. A patent-pending pressure reduction valve for MTIS adjusts pressures manually and safely when a vehicle is parked overnight.” Sonzala said that PSI is planning several innovations next year to improve on a system that features a 0.0067 warranty ratio to sales. In addition to traditional tractor tire monitoring, more and more customers are interested in monitoring their trailer tires as well, according to Jon Intagliata, product manager for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems. With that comes requests for off-board notifications of tire problems, either in real-time or when the truck

arrives in the yard, he adds. “They want to better understand the features and resulting benefits of a tire pressure monitoring system as well as the advantages the Bendix system has over competitive offerings in the market,” Intagliata says. “The SmarTire TPMS system has sensors in the tire that provide direct pressure and temperature measurements. Stem-mounted sensors, on the other hand, cannot provide accurate information on the temperature of the air inside the tire.”
AUTOMATIC CONNECTIONS Bendix also has a number of new initiatives it is pursuing. “Bendix is in the process of FOR MORE INFORMATION, developing a TPMS VISIT THESE WEB SITES: system specifically for trailers that will auAIRGO SYSTEMS www.tireinflation.com tomatically connect to tractors equipped BENDIX COMMERCIAL VEHICLE with our TPMS and SYSTEMS display the data from www.bendix.com the trailer in the tractor,” Intagliata says. various telematics providers to provide off-board reporting of TPMS warnings.” Continental Tire the Americas knows first-hand what impact underinflation has on the life of a tire. “In the U.S., it’s estimated the average commercial truck or trailer is operating at about 12% below optimal inflation pressure, causing premature wear and failures,” says Alex Chmiel, brand and communications manager of the company’s Commercial Vehicle Tire Business Unit. “Just by maintaining optimal inflation, the average fleet is making tires last longer.” To address this, early next year the company will introduce ContiPressureCheck, “an active system [which] integrates sensors, a communication system, and a data processor into a single module adhered to the tire’s inner surface,” explains D.J. Frye, business development manager. “Sensors continuously monitor air pressure and temperature, avoiding measurement errors due to brake heating and sending data wirelessly to the truck’s electronic control unit. The ECU sends warnings directly to a cab display. The driver can immediately take corrective action.”
age or loss due to delays in addressing correctable problems. Because some fleet owners rarely if ever ‘see’ their trailers, this capability improves their ‘touch’ with the driver. “An early warning system will enable fleet management to actively communicate and manage driver actions in a safe and timely fashion dictated by the conditions of the tires and the road to keep the fleet rolling,” he adds. Improved communication and warning systems are part of AiRGO’s development efforts, Mullen notes. “All are designed to put the fleet managers in the driver’s seat when it comes to keeping the fleet on the road and increasing the bottom line by providing the best, most reliable and easiest to install system on the market. With these improved communication features, our customers will see the value of AiRGO’s T-3 system as unrivaled in the industry.”
The proper tire pressure can improve tire life and reduce downtime caused by on-road tire failures.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The T-3 offers a trouble-free design through a sealed bearing assembly with mechanical seal for long life, the company notes. Features also include cooler running hubs, fast and simple installation and hands-off operation for increased tread life and improved miles per gallon. The bottom line for fleets is that tire inflation systems can improve tire life, increase miles per gallon through proper tire inflation, and reduce downtime.
COMMUNICATION IS EASY One of the early makers of automatic tire inflation systems was AiRGO, which produces the T-3 system. “Our customers are asking us to design and implement improved alerting and communications for fleet and driver,” says Bruce Mullen, national sales manager. “The goal is to further reduce unanticipated fleet costs and dangerous conditions from tire dam-
