Here’s a scary trend truckers should keep an eye on: adding locallevel fuel taxes as a way to fund transportation projects. Nevada’s Clark County recently passed a two-year, 3¢/gal. tax hike that’s expected to raise $700 million for transportation projects across Southern Nevada.

The problem with such localized fuel taxes is they don’t count toward InternaLocal fuel taxes tional Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) caltake money out of culations, and that leaves carriers both large and small open to double taxation, trucker’s pockets said Paul Enos, executive director of the Nevada Trucking Assn. (NTA).

Now, NTA got an IFTA-like structure applied to Clark County’s local fuel tax initiative, but truckers in nearby Washoe County weren’t so lucky. In 2009, Washoe’s fuel tax hike initially started at 3¢/gal. but has increased by about 3¢ every year since.

How does that hurt? Take one Washoe-based carrier that drives a good portion of its miles in nearby California. The Golden State imposes a fuel tax of 44.5¢/gal., whereas Nevada’s state fuel tax is 27¢/gal. Ah, but truckers in Washoe County pay an additional local fuel tax of 13.5¢/gal., meaning they are shelling out about 40.5¢/gal. in total state and local fuel taxes. Yet that extra 13.5¢ doesn’t count towards their IFTA payments. The end result? NTA’s Enos said that firms must shell out an extra $120,000 in fuel tax payments to the Golden State per year.

That’s a bottom-line hit truckers can ill afford to take. AT

The “instant-install” OBD II device can begin working in as few as 22 seconds, while allowing companies to track their fleets inexpensively, the company said.

study of the North American Class 8 market by global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan projects that a strong equipment replacement cycle should begin between 2014 and 2015, creating an oversupply of used Class 8 equipment that should drive valuations marginally lower over the next several years.

“Our research suggests the equipment replacement cycle peaks every fourth or fifth year, thus [indicating] that 2014-2015 will be the next cycle peak ahead of a broader economic upturn in 2016,” said Sandeep Kar, global director of commercial vehicle research for Frost & Sullivan.

That upturn will also drive an increase in sales of both new and used Class 8 vehicles across North America, Kar explained, with sales rising from roughly 241,000 and 195,500 units in 2012, respectively, to some 327,000 and 237,000 units, respectively, by 2019.

Wallace Lau, a trucking industry analyst with the firm’s global commercial vehicle research practice, noted that even though used-truck valuations are poised to decline slightly over the next few years, OEMs are expected to put more focus and resources into the used market going forward.

“OEMs are getting far more involved in the used-truck space as such vehicles provide a more valuable revenue stream,” he explained.

If used-truck values increase, then OEMs pay less of a discount on their new truck models at tradein, Lau said. And if values go down, that provides an incentive for fleets to keep their trucks longer, thus in-

According to Lau, this increased OEM focus on the used-truck space is one reason why the recent slippage in dealership domination of the used-truck channel—down to some 70% of the market—is expected to reverse course and increase to as much as 78% by 2018. The study also finds a rising market share, albeit moderately high, for Internet-based usedtruck sales transactions, which accounted for 5% of total sales in 2012.

Frost & Sullivan’s research also discerned some interesting trends concerning Class 8 used-truck valuations. For starters, Lau said usedtruck values are highly dependent on several key factors, the major ones being model year and type, total mileage, engine displacement, and transmission type.

For example, a four-year-old North American Class 8 used longhaul tractor currently averages $47,475, which drops slightly to $46,200 for a regional-haul unit, then bounces up to $91,190 for a vocational model.

“However, pricing really also depends greatly on region and its market dynamics,” Lau indicated.

The pickups will be equipped with a 3.7L V6 engine and a factory-installed gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings to allow the half-ton vehicles to operate on either CNG or gasoline through separate fuel systems.

Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager, explained that CNG/LPG engine prep from the factory costs about $315 before the customer chooses a qualified vehicle modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors.

This should clear the way for other tire companies to follow suit and begin incorporating RFID so fleets can easily track their tires and retreads from cradle to grave. One of the big mysteries is how far will it go? Michelin reported that it was able to monitor pressure and temperature on buses during the 2012 Summer Olympics in London by linking the data from a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensor to the RFID tag. An RFID tag allows the tracking of truck tires and retreads electronically so an instant digital footprint of the fleet is virtually a few clicks away. However, there are two main issues that need to be addressed before we get carried away with the possibilities.

First, the commercial truck tire and wheel service industry as a whole is nowhere near prepared to manage this technology. In order for most fleets to benefit from RFID, there has to be uniformity across the sys-

tem. This means each individual vendor must have the necessary equipment and trained technicians to gather the data. It also means they need the capability to transmit the information electronically. Finally, there must be a universal electronic tool so the data can be gathered on any truck tire with RFID and transmitted directly to the fleet. Without those elements in place, RFID is destined to fail at the dealer level.

Second, fleets must decide how much information they want. Simple tracking of the assets and linking them to field surveys will save some time, but the logjam of physically checking the inflation pressure and recording and entering the data remains. RFID can be expected to speed up the process to some degree, but the truly measurable gains will only be associated when linking RFID and TPMS so the technician can eliminate those steps. And if the fleet wants to have the capability of writing data to the RFID, then the benefits must be clearly outlined because it may come at a premium.

RFID really isn’t all that scary. Any backlash from the commercial tire dealers should be minimal, as long as there is one universal electronic tool that covers all manufacturers. Most of them will see it as another opportunity to solidify relationships by providing services that others are not willing or able to provide. But it’s still different, which means the natural fear of change will cause some initial growing pains. Standardization is still the key to long-term success. As long as fleets demand global harmonization from tire companies, the long-term outlook for RFID should continue to improve. AT

Alternative options City fleet specs vehicles to meet changing regulations

Transportation has always been central to the city of Pomona, CA. Situated along a trade route used by Native Americans, the city, located in the state’s fertile valley area, was named in honor of the Roman goddess of fruit and trees.

Today, Pomona is home to over 149,000 residents who rely on a municipal fleet to provide a range of city services. Al Salcido, fleet & facilities services manager, heads up the Equipment Maintenance Fleet Services Div., which provides preventive maintenance, repairs and inspections, vehicle pool services, vehicle specification review and replacement recommendations, and the purchase and dispensing of fuel.

“We evaluate return on investment in technologies by making a business case to prove that new vehicles and equipment will cost less overall than older units,” Salcido says. “Recently, the City Council mandated that we purchase alternative vehicles as part of our replacement policy.”

The current Pomona fleet has 28 compressed natural gas-pow-

ered vehicles, including a 2012 Peterbilt Vactor sewer truck, a 2012 Freightliner tractor, and four Ford and GMC pickups. The largest single group consists of 22 Mack TerraPro Low Entry CNG refuse trucks fitted with 320-hp. Cummins Westport ISL G engines and New Way refuse collection bodies.

“In the case of refuse collection trucks, we were able to prove that the operating and maintenance cost for our diesel trucks exceeded the cost and financing for new units,” Salcido states. “Breakdowns cost overtime, while a two-year warranty on new vehicles adds up to substantial savings.”

UNDER PRESSURE Regulatory requirements also drove the decision by Pomona to purchase the 2013 model-year Macks. The South Coast Air Quality Management District had ruled out the purchase of diesel trucks in the region, Salcido notes, so the city was faced with a choice: either retrofit existing trucks with natural gas engines or buy new vehicles that

run on an alternative fuel.

“The air quality mandate changed the city’s refuse fleet in two good ways,” says Howard Morris, solid waste manager. “These trucks are quieter, and they save money on fuel.

Natural gas costs about $2.40 per diesel gallon equivalent and diesel is around $4/gal., so we know we’re going to save money on fuel in the long run.”

The Mack TerraPros are also addressing a weight issue, Morris notes.

“A lot of trucks in refuse operations can exceed bridge weight laws,” he explains. “Mack and its dealer, TEC Equipment in La Mirada, CA, solved that problem with a lighter suspension.”

City of Pomona departments operate 554 vehicles and pieces of equipment, 188 of which are assigned to law enforcement. Along with 132 miscellaneous equipment items, the fleet has 234 vehicles consisting of sedans, pickups, and medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Makes represented include Mack, Freightliner, Volvo, Peterbilt, Sterling and Elgin, Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Mercury, Nissan, and Toyota.

Pomona’s Equipment Maintenance Fleet Services Div. services its vehicles and equipment in an 11bay shop with a staff of 13 mechanics, supervisors and administrative personnel.

“With the city’s fleet called upon daily to provide essential services, it is necessary to utilize our resources cost-effectively and efficiently,” says Salcido. “In-house, we focus on preventive maintenance and statemandated safety inspections. We also contract out 20 to 25% of specialized work in areas where the investment in capital, training and inventory would be too costly for the services to be handled internally.”

s we look at what’s happening across the globe, particularly in the Middle East and specifically Egypt, it reinforces how global our economy really is. Egypt controls the Suez Canal and a number of important pipelines in the area.

Approximately 4 billion barrels of oil travel though the Suez Canal daily.

In 2006, 70% of our oil came from foreign sources; today, we are getting around 25% and the U.S. actually exports more than it imports.

So while the U.S. has significantly reduced its dependency on Middle East oil, there is still a ripple effect being felt here in terms of fuel prices anytime there is a disruption in oil flow anywhere in the world.

Fuel cost is the main concern of many trucking operations today. But with a bit of effort, fortitude and an ounce or two of tenacity, each trucking company owner and his/her truckers can turn this plight into an opportunity for more revenue and greater profits.

To begin the process, you must have the determination to look at the way you’re currently operating your trucks. It is imperative that you decrease fuel consumption as quickly as possible. An argument can be made that ‘time is money and miles driven takes time, so the faster my

trucks travel the more money I can generate.’ While this sounds good in theory, it doesn’t fly in real-world application. All it will do is put you into the hammer lane to eventual financial failure.

Critical mass is when the energy expended exceeds the energy required to accomplish a particular task. In trucker-speak, this is reached when the cost per gallon of fuel reaches the point where the fuel required to attain a greater truck speed exceeds the cost limits needed to turn a profit. In other words, “speed kills profits.” Having your drivers reduce their cruising speeds to between 55 and 65 mph will save you thousands of dollars each year.

FINDING THAT SWEET SPOT

It is very important for each driver and you, as the company owner, to know the “sweet spot” on each truck in your operation. The sweet spot is the gear, engine speed (rpms) and road speed that uses the least amount of fuel. It’s possible that a particular truck will get better fuel mileage at 63 mph than it would at 58 mph. Any good mechanic with a dyno and the specific truck’s specs should be able to tell you the best rpm and gear to minimize your fuel consumption.

nance program with emphasis on cutting resistance and friction— greasing at proper intervals, correctly scheduled oil changes, correct tire pressure and alignment, and rear axles, transmission, frame, suspension maintenance.

Tis machine (your truck), like all machines, has maintenance requirements that will not be denied. If they are ignored, there will be a significant price to pay for that arrogance. Te owner of the truck is the one who is ultimately accountable for the results of the [preventive maintenance] program. Install APUs in each tractor unit, or install shore power connections in each truck, which significantly costs less. q Investigate fuel-saving technology. Be careful not to be fooled by those attempting to take advantage of unsuspecting truckers and companies with bogus pills and items that connect to fuel lines. q Shop for your fuel way before you need it. If possible, check major truck stop Internet sites each day before your trucks roll. Check the price of fuel along your route

and plan accordingly. Because of the wild up and down fluctuations in fuel prices, you may need to adjust your plan each day. q Optimize the routes your trucks take on each load. Tis is not necessarily the shortest path, but rather the path of least resistance. It is the path with the fewest obstacles along the way (i.e., traffic lights, turns, mountains, construction, large cities with near-gridlock, rush hours, etc.). q Lead by example. The more people who conserve fuel, the lower the price will be; it’s the basic law of supply and demand. And even if the price doesn’t go down, conserving fuel should at least help stabilize fuel prices.

Tis is the best time to increase your freight rates. With the extreme increase in fuel prices and the publicity this has generated, shippers know that rate increases will follow.

If you don’t have a handle on your fixed, operational and fuel costs, now is the time to know these numbers. You can’t control what you don’t know and not knowing the costs of doing business is a quicker route to failure than raising fuel prices. We can’t control the price of oil on the world market, but we can control and monitor our own cost of doing business. dmond Public Schools comprise the fourth largest public school district in Oklahoma, serving roughly 22,500 students and employing more than 2,500 people. Yet it takes care of its 150 bright yellow school buses and other assorted light vehicles at a single, central seven-bay maintenance facility staffed with five technicians who handle everything from engines to tires.

J. L. Fuller has been the Edmond School District’s transportation supervisor for almost nine years. After he began working for the district, he found that bus tires

were stored on metal racks housed in two 40-ft. storage containers out in the parking area.

The reason? The shop simply didn’t have the storage space for spare tires, yet had to keep a number of spares on hand in case a school bus suffered a flat or damaged tire. “You can’t have a school bus sit stranded or be taken out of service just for the lack of a tire,” Fuller explained.

But the storage containers were not easy to access, were exposed to the elements, didn’t have heating or air conditioning, and were “just a pain in the rear” to use, he says. Thus, an alternative needed to be found.

uller himself isn’t a veteran of the transportation industry; he actually came into the field after retiring from a financial document printing company But he knew that taking care of school bus tires, like truck tires, is no easy task as a single front tire alone can weigh 90 lbs. while the ones on the rear axle can weigh 100 lbs.

So, he huddled with his technicians to explore some tire storage options, and they eventually settled on a storage system developed by Allentown, PA-based Stanley Vidmar. The fully motorized vertical tire storage system selected by the Edmond School District occupies just 12 ft. x 15 ft. worth of floor space, so it could easily fit within the shop. Not only can the unit handle various tire sizes up to 44 in. in diameter, only one operator is needed to rotate carrier frames, locate desired tire sets, stop at proper position, and safely remove tires at floor level.

“We can store up to 72 of our big bus tires in it, or a total of 96 tires if we combine a mix of bus tires and light-vehicle tires,” Fuller explains. “The big savings from this system for us is time. To fully change a set of tires on a bus, a technician would have to walk outside

and retrieve them one by one from our storage containers—lifting and moving them by hand,” he adds. “Now the tires are available right inside the shop. We save at minimum a half hour when we need to change a tire.”

On top of that, the Stanley Vidmar storage system can also hold what Fuller calls “fully ready tires,” meaning tires already mounted on wheels. “If a bus comes in and needs a quick change, we can get them in and out fast and then go back later to remove the old tires from the wheels. It helps make the shop more productive.”

It also makes it safer, too. The motorized selector and walk up/down ramp means no physical lifting or carrying of tires is required, making tire retrieval more ergonomic and lowering the potential for workplace injuries.

Fuller credits the experienced technicians in the shop with helping select a tire storage system that best fits their work environment. “My management style is to listen to people with the hands-on experience, then move towards finding a solution to meet their needs and that of our budget,” he explains. “I enjoy challenges and I am fortunate to work with some great technicians who enjoy solving similar challenges as well.”

Managing tires from cradle to grave can reduce overall costs

ires need not be the problem child bedeviling your operating budget year after year by demanding premature care and costly attention.

Not if you ensure everything within reason is done to baby tires along their path from cradle to grave—that is, from initial purchase to final disposal. “There’s rocket science when it comes to tire development, but not when it comes to tire maintenance,” points out Tom Fanning, director of replacement truck tire sales-North & Central America for Continental’s Vehicle Tire Group. He contends that what pays off most in the end is “simple but thorough attention” to the basics throughout a tire’s lifespan.

Of course, reducing tire expenditures via lifecycle cost control is nothing new. But given recent changes in the truck-tire market, the thinking about how to do so has evolved. What hasn’t changed is that tires remain expensive assets—and thus valuable ones as well.

“The cost of tires represent a significant portion of a fleet’s operating expense—typically, second only to fuel,” remarks Rick Phillips, senior director of sales-Commercial & OTR Products for Yokohama Tire Corp.

“Consequently,” he adds, “a wellmanaged tire program actually reduces cost per mile and provides a competitive advantage for the fleet.

This requires two kinds of investment. The first is in a quality product, and the second is an investment in maintenance.”

Indeed, to hear truck-tire experts, getting the most out of these highdollar rolling assets is all about control, from start to finish. And that control should begin even before a tire is fitted on a truck wheel.

SMART BIRTHING

First things first, truck owners should thoroughly consider exactly which tire to buy for a given application, whether the tire is being pur-

chased as a replacement for an existing vehicle or as an OE fitment on a new truck or trailer.

Donn Kramer, director of product marketing innovation for Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems, says that buying a new truck affords the “best opportunity to get the best performance possible across multiple tire attributes.”

He recommends fleets consider tire makers’ claims for a given tire regarding its potential contribution to fuel economy, its casing’s retreadability and estimated total lifespan, and its original miles-to-removal expectation. “Start with the tire specified by the OEM,” Kramer advises, “but speak with your tire dealer about attaining that tire at the best possible price.”

Continental’s Fanning points out that it “costs some $500 more to buy a premium replacement drive versus paying a $20 upcharge to get that same tire when ordering a new truck.”

Aaron Murphy, vice president of China Manufacturers Alliance (CMA), which markets Double Coin truck tires, says that fleets should “understand that paying a premium at the OE level—that is, not settling on the standard tire available—might mean a bit more

initial investment when purchasing the equipment, but the overall cost per mile will be driven down by having the correct tire in the correct application.”

According to Guy Walenga, director of engineering-commercial products & technology for Bridgestone Americas, the first consideration when buying a tire should be whether or not the fleet plans to retread it later. “Most, but not all, fleets do retread,” he points out, “so they should look for a brand that delivers a casing that’s reliable for retreading.

“From there,” he continues, “the decision should focus on buying tires for individual wheel positions for each vehicle application. The goal is to start out with the best possible product that won’t compromise either original tread life or the mileage that can be obtained by retreading.”

UP FRONT

“Quality tire products cost more up front than some of the cheaper alternatives, but have proven to provide a lower cost of ownership over the cycle of the tire,” maintains Yokohama’s Phillips. “There is a reason a ‘cheap’ tire is cheap and that’s the reason you won’t find it in major fleets with well-managed tire programs.”

Phillips contends there are four basic elements to a quality tire. To begin with, it must provide “longlasting, trouble-free original tread life. Technology has improved tread compounds and design elements that, when put in the right application, greatly increase new tire performance.”

Secondly, expect low rolling resistance to enhance fuel efficiency.

“For every dollar spent on diesel fuel, a good bit is consumed just to overcome the rolling resistance from the tires,” he points out.

Next, consider how dependable the casing is for retreadability. “The casing a fleet chooses is the founda-

cover story tion of its tire program,” Phillips says. “A quality casing not only promotes original miles and fuel efficiency, but also extends the lifecycle of the product through retreading.”

“Lastly,” he adds, “a good distribution network that is able to provide quality service 24/7/365 is imperative—as tire-related downtime essentially adds to overall tire cost.”

“Some tires, when placed in applications or wheel positions where they are not primarily intended, can see a reduction of up to 50% of the original tread mileage,” CMA’s Murphy points out. “That’s lost money on the road. But spec’ing tires isn’t always about the most popular or highest/lowest price of the tire. Some fleet use is very specific and requires specific tires to match [the fleet’s] needs.

“Steer, drive and trailer position tires all have unique tread designs,” he adds. “Siping and decoupler grooves and any other irregularwear fighting features that help specific tires perform optimally during their initial life, prior to retreading, should be considered.”

GREEN VS. GREEN

Not so long ago, tire suppliers spoke of how fleets could best approach the trade-off between selecting a tire designated for long tread life and one designed to enhance fuel efficiency. But now they indicate that compromise may be less of an issue for many fleets due to engineering and manufacturing advances as well as changes in the regulatory environment for fleets.

“The primary focus of progressive fleet managers and truck owners is to optimize the tire’s performance and its original tread life,” says CMA’s Murphy. “If there are government regulations that require the use of low rolling-resistance (RR) tires, then a fleet manager may have no choice but to purchase low RR tires.

“However,” he continues, “in to-

Bridgestone’s Walenga says that once a fleet’s decided on the right tire for its applications, fuel economy benefits should be examined.

“Higher-mileage operations will get more savings from a fuel-efficient tire. A good place to start is with tires that are on the EPA’s SmartWay-verified list.

“Most premium steer and trailer tires are already fuel-efficient, so the real choice between fuel economy and tread mileage comes with drive tires,” he continues. “If they’re not running in California, where fuelefficient tires are required, fleets can look at weighing the value of a longer-wearing tire.”

Paul Crehan, director of product marketing for Michelin Truck Tires, says to bear in mind that “every manufacturer’s tires on the SmartWay-verified list—across all their product lines for that matter—vary by performance quality.”

In other words, SmartWay verification should be viewed as a starting point when deciding which fuel-

efficient tire to purchase. “Tire price points exist for a reason,” Crehan adds. “They are logical. Tire-dealer networks and services vary as well.”

Walenga says that “whenever diesel is over $2/gal., the fleet will come out ahead with the more fuelefficient choice.”

FUEL FACTOR

“The only point at which mileage to tread wear-out trumps tire fuel efficiency is when diesel is priced at less than $1/gal.,” remarks Continental’s Fanning.

“It’s true that getting more miles from a tire will lower the tire cost per mile (CPM),” says Walenga, “but there’s a disconnect as most fleets don’t calculate a tire’s contribution to fuel economy as part of tire CPM. Often, two budgets are being managed separately—tire and fuel—yet only one manager is making the purchase call.”

Goodyear’s Kramer concurs, remarking that “it can be a real dilemma for fleets to merge tire and fuel cost figures. And tire dealers need to recognize there are in reality two tire buyers at most fleets and work to educate both.”

cost of fuel saved when calculating tire CPM. Fleets can also seek out tires that, to coin a description, offer a hybrid solution to the green versus green decision. For example, Kramer reports there are new drive tires that provide “both fuel efficiency and long miles to removal” by combining fuel-efficient rubber compounds with wide, deep treads.

BREATH OF LIFE

Inflation is an absolute must— “air is what holds the tire up,” says Michelin’s Crehan. “Stickers can be used to post inflation instructions, and it should be made very clear who is responsible for checking inflation and that they do it on a regular basis.”

“Only good things come out of keeping tires correctly inflated,” remarks Al Cohn, director of new market development & engineering support for Pressure Systems International (PSI), which manufactures the Meritor-branded tire-inflation system.

“Consider what happens when a fleet buys a fuel-efficient tire at a premium and does not keep it properly inflated: It won’t get the performance it paid for,” he continues.

“And keeping tires inflated to provide an even footprint on the road

will also decrease irregular tread wear, which will help avoid early tire failure.”

Properly inflated tires will also provide less rolling resistance and will quickly discharge any heat generated, keeping internal heat levels stable, Hankook Tire notes. As heat builds inside the tire, the chances of internal damage to the tire grows, the company says.

Over-inflation can create a harsher ride and result in tires that are more easily damaged by road debris, Hankook adds. The same can be said for under-inflation, which increases wear and causes sidewalls to overflex, diminishing the tire’s integrity.

Josh Carter, president of Aperia Technologies, which produces the Halo tire-inflation system, points out that “data that has been captured over the years and extensive on-road studies have shown the savings potential from correct inflation to be significant.”

Carter contends that the “reality of inflation” is complicated as “ambient temperature, sun-heating, load and other operating variables make it hard for even the most diligent driver or maintenance personnel to know how much air a given tire needs added or removed—as overinflation is often overlooked.”

“We’d love to see inflation checked daily, but realistically at least weekly,” Goodyear’s Kramer advises. “Longhaul trailer tires do not get checked very often. Bear in mind that needed repairs on these tires can be masked if an onboard central inflation system is used and no one actually checks the tires for long periods.”

“A high percentage of for-hire and private carriers do not have a documented tire-maintenance manual, so their maintenance programs for tires and wheels are not well communicated to their personnel and to their outsourced tire service providers,” concurs Peggy Fisher, president of TireStamp, which provides tiremonitoring and tire-asset management systems.

“These written policies should cover such key items as casing management,” points out Crehan. He says it’s especially important to write down how casings should be handled. “ T h e w r it t e n policies on tire care should kick in as soon as tires enter the fleet and reflect the fleet’s unique operation,” continues Crehan. “For example, how far trucks travel in a given day will affect the policies.

“The structure has to be in place,” he adds, “so that the fleet’s tire department or vendor knows what to do by vehicle application and wheel position. It’s also critical to have a road-service policy and one regarding the condition of tires needed to adhere to any vehicle resale or lease agreement.”

“Most fleets consider premium truck tires to be assets,” Walenga wraps up. “They’re expensive to buy, but their potentially long service life can bring down operating costs.”

Actually, both. As a truck driving school, we use trucks in the course of training new truckers. We own four tractor-trailers in our training facility that students use daily in their endeavors. Road Runner Shipping is our small trucking company that operates OTR.

We have both. Many of our loads are dedicated runs; however, sometimes we need to go wherever the load takes us. We operate regionally, east of the Mississippi River.

How is maintenance handled? Your own shop or jobbed out?

We use local mechanics. We feel using local mechanics is a contribution to our community and keeps costs down.

There are three shops in Weakley County, TN, that we try to use when addressing our maintenance needs. These same shops handle any major repairs.

What three challenges do you face with maintenance? How do you resolve these?

Preventive maintenance is done every 5,000 to 10,000 mi. to keep our trucks running in top condition. When the truck is in for driver home time, we schedule maintenance at that time. This prevents loss of wages for the drivers and revenue for the owners.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?

Proper tire inflation is key in getting the optimum amount of fuel mileage and reducing tire wear. Keeping trucks serviced properly is also a help.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer?

Age and miles determine when to invest in a new truck. When the cost of maintenance is higher than money spent on a newer, more reliable truck, it’s time to change.

Having maintenance completed in a timely fashion is one concern. Any time a truck’s down, wages are lost. Repair shops must know this. It sometimes requires us to be quite assertive when dealing with OTR shops to get necessary repairs and maintenance done in the shortest time at a reasonable cost. Finding a shop in another state and getting fair results can be an issue. We have a service we use for advice about these dilemmas in making an educated decision.

Tire pressure monitoring

U

Users of tire pressure monitoring (TPMS) and automatic inflation systems are finding multiple benefits from the solutions, including improved fuel economy, according to industry experts. “TPMS improves tire inflation, which results in better fuel economy,” says Peggy Fisher, president of Tire Stamp. “Tests of systems at two fleets by FMCSA resulted in a 1.4% improvement in fuel efficiency.”

Frank Sonzala, executive vice president at Pressure Systems International, which makes the Meritor Tire Inflation System by P.S.I., notes that fuel economy can drop by as much as 3% if tires are running at reduced air pressure.

“One of the primary reasons a fleet should spec automatic tire inflation systems is because rolling resistance increases as tire pressure is reduced,” he says, “and that means poorer fuel economy.”

Properly inflated tires can also experience longer tread life. By some estimates, every 10 psi of under-inflation causes tire tread to wear between 9% and 16% faster. Likewise, 10% over-inflation will cause 5% faster wear.

“Tire pressure monitoring systems allow fleets to take early action with regard to tire problems before there is a safety or maintenance issue that has to be corrected,” says Alex Chmiel, director of truck tire marketing for Continental Tire the Americas, which introduced its

ContiPressureCheck system earlier this year. “In many cases, the cost of at least one service call per year can be avoided by maintaining tire inflation.”

Matt Wilson, business unit director–controls at Hendrickson Trailer Commercial Vehicle Systems, says advanced TPMS can prevent over-inflation, which can occur when the outside temperature changes. The company’s TireMaxx PRO, an option on Intraax and Vantraax trailer suspension systems, monitors and inflates or deflates tires based on changing environmental conditions.

Bob Montgomery, vice president-Intelligent Transportation Systems at Stemco, points out that while TPMS makes it simple to know when a tire is not inflated properly, the system should also make inflation information available to maintenance personnel. “Most of our customers have told us that the system has saved them road calls because it notified them that a tire was losing pressure.”

The BatRF TPMS by Stemco uses RF-enabled sensors mounted on the outside of the tire. In addition to flashing a red LED when a tire is below a target pressure, the system can also show the last three low tire events stored in each sensor and transmit that data to an accessible database.

ContiPressureCheck includes sensors that measure inflation and temperature in tires and a communications system that sends real-time data to an in-cab display. The reusable sensors are located inside a protective rubber container and are glued to the inner surface of the tire.

SmarTire TPMS by Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems provides real-time tire alerts such as pressure and temperature data through an integration with the manufacturer’s SafetyDirect system. Information can be viewed on an in-vehicle display or OEM dashboard, or by remotely using the SafetyDirect portal. The latest version of SmarTire for tractors automatically detects the SmarTire Trailer-Link TPMS, which wirelessly transmits information on trailer tires directly to the tractor.

Tire Stamp’s TireVigil TPMS and TireVigil TPMS Trailer, which automatically connects to the tractor system, combine TPMS with vehicle tracking to provide remote diagnostics.
