HOW DOES BRIDGESTONE STACK UP IN TERMS OF RETREADABILITY?
Fact: Bridgestone casings are #1 when it comes to retreadability. BASys data from over two million casings prove that Bridgestone had the lowest percentage of tires that could not be retreaded due to conditions related to casing construction. Lower than Michelin or Goodyear. And conďŹ rming what many have long suspected: A Bridgestone tire investment is a smarter tire investment. Get the facts at retreadinstead.com.

Funding crisis

Can you imagine a world where fewer federal government dollars are spent on transportation infrastructure? A world where a “less, not more” philosophy rules the political day? Well, based on discussions currently occurring in transportation policy circles, we may be heading toward such a world—and a lot more rapidly than many in trucking might think. Increasing In September, the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) and the Eno Center for Transporrevenues are a tation published a report, titled “The Consequences of Reduced Federal Transportation thing of the past Investment,” that attempted to outline the possible consequences of reduced federal surface transportation funding. “Current fiscal and political realities suggest that federal transportation spending will be stagnant or even declining for many years,” said BPC Visiting Scholar Emil Frankel. C. Kenneth Orski, a noted public policy consultant, added that proponents of more robust spending ignore the political realities of mounting federal deficits and the shadow of a $16 trillion debt hovering over all fiscal decisions. Such a cut in funding would fall unevenly on various states, he pointed out, as some states are more dependent on federal funds than others. For example, while 10 states rely on federal funds for less than 25% of their overall transportation spending, 14 states rely on the feds for more than 40% of transportation dollars. And that’s the new reality to which we all must adjust. AT

renewed effort is underway at Bridgestone Commercial Solutions (BCS) to get motor carriers large and small to view their tires as longterm “assets,” much like tractors, trailers, and other trucking-related equipment, rather than as commodities to be compared merely on purchase price. During an all-day event that included a tour of Bridgestone’s nearly 2 million sq. ft. truck tire plant in Warren County, TN, and its North American Manufacturing Education Center attached to its LaVergne Firestone truck tire facility, BCS executives explained that using “lifecycle costing” strategies remains the best way to ensure fleets achieve a return on dollars invested in tires. “It’s about focusing on a total solution when it comes to tires, not just the purchase price,” explained Kurt Danielson, president of BCS. “It’s easy to make a cheap tire and get it out there. What’s not easy is ensuring that tires help improve the fuel economy of tractor-trailers, that they help keep trucks up and running. It’s that additional value that helps fleets be profitable and successful.” Bridgestone’s Ecopia line, for instance, is a tire line designed to be retreaded multiple times if maintained properly, further lowering tire lifecycle costs for a fleet. “A retread costs only 35% to 45% of what a new tire costs, so the longer a tire casing can be used, the more its cost per mile declines,” noted Guy Walenga, director of en-
Bridgestone believes that tires should be considered an as asset. gineering for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. Part of that savings comes from using less oil, as it takes 22 gals. of oil in the construction of a new tire, versus just 7 gals. for a retread, Scott Damon, vice president of manufacturing, pointed out. Improving the low-rolling resistance characteristics of truck and trailer tires, both when new and as retreads, further improves those cost-per-mile metrics, Walenga stressed, as a 5% improvement in rolling resistance equates to a 1% gain in fuel economy. It’s not just the tire itself but what wraps around it, especially when it comes to retreading, explained Danielson. “Buying just a ‘good tire’ is not good enough anymore,” he stressed. “As we went through the Great Recession, a lot of trucking companies survived by tightening up on their business. That’s why we believe the key to maximizing tire value going forward is to view them as assets and not commodities.”

o help make a successful deal, following are eight simple tactics you can use: ❑ Be prepared: Have a plan of action in place on how you’ll handle the negotiation. Know the other party’s needs and desires. ❑ Elevator speech: Prepare your initial presentation as an elevator speech: concise, to the point, and easy to understand. ❑ Present your offer first: Establish an anchor point around which a negotiation will revolve. This anchors the negotiation in your favor. ❑ Seller high, buyer low: As the seller, make your offer higher than what you’ll accept. As the buyer, make it lower than you’re willing to pay. ❑ Be likeable: Create an environment where the buyer is willing to listen to you throughout the negotiation. ❑ Listen to his points: Then repeat his concerns and important points. Let him know that what he says is important. ❑ Be passionate: Show that you believe in your position and your offer; you’ve done your research and are a serious participant in this negotiation. ❑ Keep to the facts: Opinion is easily disputed and dismissed; facts backed up by data and research drive a point home—and a negotiation forward. and McNally has published the 2013 Large Scale Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas. Last published in 2010, the map features tear- and water-resistant pages, a spiral binding for stay-flat pages, and maps that are larger with bigger type than those in the regular book. The atlas is available at TravelCenters of America and Petro Stopping Centers locations nationwide. The atlas features a completely revised state and province maps section with better urban area representations than in the past, more
spatially accurate road network and recalculated mileage, and a larger map scale font with anti-glare pages. There are also more city maps than ever before. The company has added eight cities and one downtown map, bringing the total inset maps in the atlas to 387. Easier-to-read map coloring of state-designated truck routes and National Network routes are included to provide the best route possible for truckers. www.randmcnally.com

enworth Truck has released glider kits for several models to help owners who wish to bring an older truck back to “new” status. Available for the T660, T800 (split fender configuration), and W900L models, the kits are designed to be mated to EPA 2004 engines and matching transmissions. All sleeper sizes are available, Kenworth said. Customers can spec the kits directly from the company. According to Kenworth, a 12% Federal excise tax will apply when a glider kit is used to repair a de-commissioned (wrecked) vehicle, change its intended service (for example, from tractor to a full truck), or where the restoration cost exceeds 75% of the value. ustom Truck is offering factory reman’d Caterpillar engines for the growing glider kit truck market. The engines, 1999 C-15 and C-16 powerplants, can be used in any area where EPA standards are not mandated for all trucks. According to Kustom, installing a factory reman’d Cat engine allows customers to put a pre-emissions engine into a current production chassis. The engines do not require DPF or SCR. All Caterpillar factory reman’d engines qualify for a new truck engine warranty that covers the engine from flywheel to front cover, the company said, ranging from 24 months to 36 months. All Caterpillar factory reman’d engines have the option to add an ESC Plus warranty that can extend that coverage out to 60 months or 500,000 mi. to include the turbo, water pump and injectors. The base warranty typically covers parts and labor as well as towing to the nearest authorized repair facility, while the Cat ESC warranty covers parts and labor. www.kustomkits.com

Lock out, tag out
I
If you’re looking for an example of a government agency that performs regular inspections of the workplace, look no further than the Mine Safety and Health Administration, or MSHA. MSHA governs all of the mines in the U.S.—from the local gravel quarry to the mammoth open pit and underground mining operations. When it comes to maintaining or repairing the equipment that operates in these environMSHA inspectors Take steps to ments, always make sure the “lock tag out” rule is reguprotect those out, larly followed to prevent an under trucks accident. The trucking industry could learn a valuable lesson from their brothers in mining. In the past two years, a total of six people have been fatally injured in the types of accidents that lock out, tag out is designed to prevent. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), here are a couple of examples: ❑ Worker performing maintenance on a tow truck was killed when he was hit and dragged by the moving truck. ❑ Worker checking the rear brakes on his truck died after the truck ran over him. ❑ Worker servicing a truck’s brakes was killed after the truck moved in reverse and struck, dragged, and ran over her. ❑ Worker adjusting the brakes underneath a tractortrailer was crushed when the truck rolled forward. Most of those accidents occurred at trucking companies, so it’s time for the industry to step up and recognize that there may be a problem. And with all of the emphasis on brake and tire inspection under CSA, the number of people crawling underneath tractors and trailers is
14 American Trucker/November 2012
only going to increase. Rather than wait for the issue to escalate or hit home, I think every fleet should implement and communicate a lock out, tag out procedure when equipment is being worked on or inspected. It’s unfair to speculate on the details regarding those six accidents, but it’s also reasonable to think that at least a couple of them were preventable. For example, if the correct wheel chocks are in place whenever a vehicle is being inspected, maintained or serviced, it’s unlikely that any sudden or unexpected movement will put an employee at risk while they are under the vehicle. It’s an extra step and an extra expense, but the consequences are pretty clear if something goes wrong. Likewise, drivers are reluctant to give up their keys, but that is the only way that a technician can guarantee that someone doesn’t jump in the cab and drive off while they are servicing the tires and brakes. It happened to me when I was a young technician, and I can tell you from firsthand experience that it scares the life out of you. Establishing a lock out, tag out procedure is only the start. It needs to be communicated to each employee so anyone who comes in contact with the equipment follows the steps and is aware of the signs that indicate a vehicle is not to be moved. And whenever there is a chance that someone could be underneath the vehicle for any reason or length of time, there should be a system in place to prevent unforeseen movement and warn everyone that work is being performed. Finally, outside vendors who perform service on trucking company property must be held to the same standard. So the message to everyone is lock out, tag out, or get out (and don’t come back). AT

Expert help Leasing helps ensure timely delivery and cost control
G
Gold Star Foods, Ontario, CA, has been leasing trucks and tractors for over 20 years because it allows the company to concentrate on delivering goods in a cost-effective, timely manner. “Full-service leasing also helps conserve capital resources for other projects, like the recent construction of a new main warehouse,” says CFO Greg Johnson. “We can’t justify committing the kinds of resources that full-service leasing companies have to manage our fleet,” he adds, “including their expertise in helping spec more efficient and productive vehicles, in meeting environmental and safety regulations, and in providing maintenance that keeps downtime to a minimum.” Johnson points to the latest California Air Resources Board requirements for transport refrigeration units (TRUs) as an example. Beginning Jan. 1, 2013, TRUs that are compliant with the state’s in-use performance standards need to be listed on
the “100%-Compliant Carrier List.” “We’re a $200-million business, but we’re not experts in fleet management or maintenance,” says Johnson. “Especially here in California, it’s difficult to keep up with the latest rules, regulations and requirements that come with operating refrigerated delivery vehicles.” Johnson says Gold Star needs to maintain its focus on supplying fresh and frozen goods as well as supplies to over 300 school districts throughout the southwestern U.S. Gold Star must be able to rely on its fleet to make those deliveries. Currently, the operation includes 49 trucks and 33 tractors, all fielded under full-service lease agreements. There are also 45 refrigerated trailers, a company-owned mix of makes and models. Thermo King dealers service the fleet’s refrigeration units, and an independent repair service handles routine trailer maintenance and repairs. Last year, Gold Star began do-

The deal with PacLease has brought 27 Peterbilt straight trucks and 10 Peterbilt tractors into the fleet in the past year. Included are Model 337 trucks with Paccar PX-8 engines and Eaton automated transmissions, and Model 386 tractors with Cummins ISX engines and manual Eaton gearboxes. The trucks are fitted with 24-ft. bodies equipped with Thermo King refrigeration units and Maxon liftgate/ramp combinations. An in-depth needs assessment by PacLease led to specification recommendations based on the company’s duty cycle and adds to the vehicles’ resale value at the end of the lease. Rush Truck Leasing also developed an on-site maintenance program for the fleet, while also providing 24/7 coverage and rental equipment assurances in the event of a breakdown. “Reliability, in terms of equipment and service, is what allows us to make critical deliveries and provide excellent customer service,” Johnson states.

MANAGER: Patrick Sacor TITLE: Chairman & CEO FLEET: ICT Holdings, Glendale Heights, IL OPERATION: Multidimensional freight delivery and support provider When ICT Holdings got into the freight business two years ago, it faced what Patrick Sacor, chairman and CEO, calls a “diversification” issue. “The real trick in the freight world now is how to maximize diversity of service yet also maximize efficiency at the same time,” he explains. PROBLEM “Transportation is typically a very lowmargin business, so you need to diversify your reach in order to build revenue, but you must also keep a very tight rein on expenses.” The question, then, seemed to be how to get wildly disparate services—everything from truck sales and leas-
ing to logistics, freight, even truck and trailer maintenance work—to function together as a single business entity under one roof. “In this industry, you want to have a lot of options, especially when it comes to maintenance,” Sacor says, which is why ICT decided to operate its own maintenance shop within its “all-in-one” freight facility concept. “The logic is that doing it ourselves would help us control costs and improve on-time delivery service for our own trucks,” he points out. “Eventually, we’d also be able to offer maintenance service to the public as well as to further lower our cost profile.”
ICT brought its “all-in-one” vision to life earlier this year after purchasing and then overhauling the former 23,000-sq.-ft. Chicago Select Trucking building in Glendale Heights, IL. This created what Sacor calls a “freight hub” for all of ICT’s freight transportation-related companies: ICT Logistics, ICT Leasing and Truck Sales, ICT Services and Repair Center, ICT Transport (dry van trucking), ICT Refrigerated, F&F Transport (a flatbed carrier), and ICT Real Estate. Sitting on five acres located less than one mile from Interstate 355, a major transportation artery, Sacor says the facility collects all aspects of ICT’s freight support matrix into one facility, providing what he calls “end-to-end” transportation services. “Our Glendale Heights location will also be the flagship for the ICT brand as well,” he notes. “Eventually, we want to create hub branches across the country based on the Glendale design.” ICT’s Glendale location includes 20 service bays, one wash bay, and a secure truck parking yard, Sacor says, staffed with 10 technicians, one head technician, and a general manager dedicated to just the maintenance operation.
“We can handle most maintenance needs for our fleet and eventually for outside customers, including light body work,” he points out. By having its own maintenance and repair operation within the facility, Sacor says ICT expects its maintenance-related costs to be only about one-third of what they would be otherwise. “We should also be able to go to a customer and show them we can provide better on-time delivery because we can control the maintenance on our equipment,” he adds. “As we expand, this model will help us improve those ontime factors as well. The next satellite branch we’re looking at opening will be in Arkansas, allowing us to not only create long-haul ‘drop’ locations to swap loads and thus help improve home time, but also as maintenance/repair locations so our trucks and others can obtain service where their loads are being turned over.” That multifaceted approach, he says, will be one of the key factors in ICT’s growth plans. “Our feeling is if we’re going to have facilities like this support our freight, logistics, truck sales, and leasing operations, why not offer the maintenance for the equipment as well, right in the same building?”

business of trucking
Be wary of success Resting on your laurels can cause your business to spin out of control
B Y T I M B R A D Y, B U S I N E S S E D I T O R
W
e all have experienced the sweet taste of victory and the agony of defeat. The first time for many of us was as a child playing a sport or a board game. Winning created a feeling of euphoria; losing, one of depression and failure. So why would anyone need to be wary of success? Both winning or losing need to be dealt with in very similar ways. We’ve seen the sports contest in which a team comes out strong—doing everything right, amassing points on the scoreboard—only to falter in the crucial last portion of the game and wind up on the losing end. What caused the seemingly perfect execution to turn into a failed attempt? Overconfidence. This is
euphoria of success more than the challenges you faced either getting there or the ones that come from failure.
where people, whether playing sports or operating a business, begin to overestimate their abilities and miscalculate the capability of the competitors they just bested. The kill point of your business comes the moment you let overconfidence lead you to let down your guard; the point where you start resting on your laurels. This is when all the hard work and effort you put in to reach that point no longer becomes the identifying trait that defines your business. In trucking, just like any other competitive business, owners and managers must recognize that after the successful execution of a plan, their next job is the difficult task of bringing their employees and contractors back to reality. You must maintain the desire to move forward to the next victory. As the company owner, you must fear the

AVOID ACTING ON POTENTIAL
Following are a couple of examples of success gone bad, along with how to avoid the outcomes. First scenario: The operative word here is “potentially.” Every small-business owner who has succeeded over time remembers thinking he’d landed that one elusive, large customer who would take the business to the stratosphere; however, what actually happens is that customer never quite comes through. The small company is left holding the proverbial (empty) moneybag and is saddled with equipment that can’t be utilized, employees who have to be laid off, and expenses that can potentially bury the operation. Avoid the “potentially” trap: Never assume that just because this potential customer contacted you means they want to do a large amount of business with your company. Treat
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
them the same way you’d treat any potential client: provide them with information and pricing, but require the same arrangements you insist upon with your smaller clients. Do not hire additional personnel or acquire equipment until you are sure their amount of business needs such an investment. The majority of big corporations aren’t going to do large volumes of business with a small company unless that company is unique and there isn’t any other business doing what it does. In that case, the large company will oftentimes attempt to buy out the smaller business. R e m e m b e r, unless you’re negotiating directly with the CEO and/or chairman of a large corporation, the people you’re dealing with need to sell a manager further up the food chain on why their megacorporation should do business with your small company. Each step on this ladder holds someone who has the power to nix the entire deal. So, again, treat them as if they’re going to provide the same amount of business or less than your smaller customers. What if the larger company wants you to commit a large percentage of your company’s assets in providing them service? If you accept, realize you’ve just given up financial control of your company. As a rule of thumb, never allot more than 30% to a single customer, no matter how tempting it is. If that customer decides to cut
Go to
back or cancel your services, it’ll be very difficult to rebound if they are responsible for more than 30% of your business.
AVOID RAPID GROWTH
Second scenario: Be aware of the dangers that come with expanding faster than your real growth potential can handle. Say a company had real success over several years, carefully controlled its growth, added equipment and personnel only when capital for growth became available, and the business generated necessary revenue to support the expansion. With this type of success, others take notice, i.e., a banker, investor group or a combination of the two. Someone calls the company owner and says all the right things such as wanting to help the company grow and willing to lend funds to accomplish the dream. Or it could be he/she decided that growing one truck, one driver at a time is just not getting the company to the goal envisioned fast enough. The company is hocked to the max; six months later, it is on the auction block and the owner is looking for work. What happened? Avoid expanding just for the sake of expanding. Expansion at a speed greater than the velocity at which the company is accustomed to growing will, in fact, run it into the ground. The faster the growth, the greater the
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
possibility of financial damage. Growth should always be approached with caution. Much like going down a mountain pass in a truck, you never go down that mountain any faster than in the gear which keeps you from increasing speed. Slower is better; faster is disaster. Expanding and growing a business isn’t any different. If you only fail when you haven’t learned from your mistakes, then you can only succeed if you don’t rest on your laurels. If you fail, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, evaluate what caused the failure so it’s not repeated, and jump back into the fray. In success, you take a moment to celebrate, pat one another on the back, evaluate what brought the success, and get back to the job at hand. Success is not a gift. It’s always earned and must be worked at constantly and nurtured carefully in order to continue. Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@ writeuptheroad.com or call 731749-8567. New federal rules pushing development of more fuel-efficient tires and retreads
G
overnment forces bent on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from commercial trucks through increased fuel efficiency are driving manufacturers of truck tires and retreads to build products that deliver the largest possible contribution to miles-pergallon performance. That’s why tire and retread suppliers are all about closing what can be termed the mpg loop—the contribution rubber on the road makes to truck fuel efficiency, whether it’s as an original tire, a replacement tire, or as one or more retreads in fleet service. Among the first developments to accelerate the birth of more fuel-efficient tires and retreads was the GHG limits placed on certain highway tractors, which were put forth by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) back in 2008 and came into effect in 2010. CARB, by the way, estimates that by the close of 2020, its GHG reg will have saved truck operators “about $8.6 billion when diesel fuel consumption is reduced by as much as 750 million gals. in California and by 5 billion gals. across the nation.” And per CARB, that fuel-efficiency gain will come thanks to “improvements in tractor and trailer aerodynamics and the use of low rolling resistance tires.”
PRESSURE POINT
At pretty much the same time the CARB rule came about, mpgsavvy truck owners as well as those responding to environmentally conscious shippers began to increasingly seek out tires that met the fuel-consumption criteria required for verification by the voluntary SmartWay program launched by

the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Yet another mpg pressure point being applied to tires is the federal GHG rules that will begin to be imposed on commercial truck OEMs starting less than two years from now. And to be sure, the contribution retreads can make to closing the mpg loop has at last caught the spotlight in a big way. In June, as part of its SmartWay program, EPA started a fuel-efficiency verification program for “tire retread technologies for use on linehaul Class 8 trucks.” EPA states that the resulting verified “low rolling resistance retread products” will provide cuts in fuel consumption of at least 3% compared to the “most popular retreaded products now in use.” Retread suppliers must test their products and demonstrate they meet the required performance criteria to be listed by SmartWay as verified retreads. EPA notes that to obtain the minimum fuel-consumption reductions, “verified tires or retreads must be used on the drive and trailer positions, with EPA-verified steer tires, and all tires must be properly

inflated according to the manufacturer’s specifications.” “The additional expansion of the voluntary SmartWay program plus the CARB and GHG rules for OEMs together are pointing the industry in the right direction for improved fuel efficiency,” contends Guy Walenga, director of engineering-commercial products & technologies for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. “The goal, of course, is to reduce vehicle emissions for cleaner air and the side benefit is less fuel will get burned. It’s a win-win all around.”
FAST TRACK
Make no mistake, retread makers are making fast tracks to attain SmartWay verification. “We are in the testing phase of our fuel-saving products [for SmartWay verification] by one of the major EPA-approved U.S. testing labs,” relates Giampaolo Brioschi, product manager for retread supplier Marangoni. “As soon as we have the results, we will apply for the SmartWay approval,” he continues. “In our case, we have combined Marangoni’s splice-less Ringtread technology with advanced compounding and tread designs to maximize fuel efficiency while maintaining very long mileage and increasing reliability.” Continental Tire the Americas’ Commercial Vehicle Tire unit has already submitted two low rolling resistance retreads for SmartWay verification: the HDL Eco Plus ContiTread (drive-axle retread) and the HTL Eco Plus ContiTread (for trailers). “Because of the adoption of these standards by the SmartWay Trans-

port Partnership, the importance of manufacturing retreaded truck tires that perform just as well as new products has been brought to the forefront,” says Paul Williams, Continental’s executive vice president for truck tires, the Americas. “Our ContiTreads have always been made with the same standards and tread patterns as our new tires, which are the largest number of products verified by SmartWay today for low rolling resistance,” he notes. Paul Crehan, Michelin’s product marketing director, says the company’s process to attain SmartWay verification of its retreads is under way and will result in the “approval [of] a wide range of our products.”

doing lots of testing with the OEMs and working on a new generation of tires” with the GHG rules in mind. “And the GHG specifics only suggest what the contribution of tires may be. But there’s the strong possibility that in the next five to 10 years, a 10 to 15% improvement in tire rolling resistance will be seen,” he predicts. “Keep in mind a 5% decrease in rolling resistance equals a 1% gain in fuel efficiency.” Stansbie adds that such a performance mark as 10 or 15% better “has not yet been stated by SmartWay, but it has been suggested.” Stansbie points out that, in general, the bigger challenge ahead for tire and retread makers is not what SmartWay, which is oriented toward long-haul trucking, or the federal GHG reg may require, but what must be done to reduce the rolling resistance of on/off-road tires.
FINE-TUNING He says the upshot of the GHG impact is that OEMs “may ask us to fine-tune rolling resistance further” to improve the mpg performance of more truck types. “And because the

tors, tires will play a larger role. So the engineering will continue to be a work in progress.” As to whether fleet owners should be concerned that the harder push now on for tire/retread mpg gains might lead to trade-offs in durability and retreadability, Double Coin’s Murphy says there’s no doubt that’s a consideration when any manufacturer modifies its products. “The durability/retreadability can’t suffer due to these mpg/GHG requirements or the overall tire costs to a fleet will increase,” he continues. “Te key for us is to optimize all aspects of the tire’s functionality and performance so that the lifecycle costs of a Double Coin tire continue to be attractive to the end user.”

This in turn helps the retreadability and durability of the tire. “However,” he continues, “there are certainly other trade-offs for fuel efficiency. tread patterns, casing components, rubber compounds, and a myriad of technical developments.” Michelin’s Crehan says that to meet the specifics of the federal GHG category for heavy-duty trucks, there are six approaches OEMs can access to meet the targets. These are aerodynamics, weight reduction, extended idle shutdown (such as via APUs), speed limiting, and drive- and steer-axle tires with low rolling resistance. “Selecting from these choices, the OEMs can make various adjustments to meet the heavy-duty GHG goals,” he explains. “For vocational trucks, though, only the steer and drive tires will matter, as those vehicles are not running fast nor do they have persons sleeping in them.” Crehan notes that Michelin’s “general position” on both the SmartWay program and the CARB and GHG rules is positive. “Environmental sustainability and fuel efficiency are the targets and that is being well communicated to the trucking marketplace.”
CLOSING THE LOOP Bridgestone’s Walenga reports that the tire maker has been working with truck OEMs it supplies for the past three to four months to get them the tire data they will need for their GHG calculations. “The way it’s working is that if an OEM expects to use a particular tire on a certain truck, they need average rolling resistance quotients from us,” he explains. “And they need that data for each and

every tire model they will buy. As it happens, our line of tires that are SmartWay-verified will handle most of the expected truck applications under the GHG rules.” Along with his contention that the advent of SmartWay-verified retreads will help close the mpg loop, Walenga says the positive upshot of the GHG rule will be “more fleets ending up with more fuel-efficient tires on their new trucks. From there, more fuel-efficient tires will get out into the marketplace. And fleets will be wise to buy replacement tires and/or retreads that are fuel-efficient to keep the mpg gains going for them.” Double Coin’s Murphy points out that the truck tire market extends beyond tires that must meet specific mpg/GHG requirements. “Each fleet has its own criteria for operating,” he contends. “Standards like SmartWay or CARB may dictate to certain users which products to utilize. While it’s an important product, especially for linehaul fleets and those that participate in programs like SmartWay, Double Coin still
“Tires today are more fuel-efficient than they were just a few years ago ... and will improve further.” produces and sells more tires that aren’t on the verified technology list at this time. “In the replacement market,” he continues, “there are many applications where the need for verified technology is not mandatory due to applications or other requirements. I will say that both power unit and trailer OEMs are focusing heavily on the SmartWay-verified technology products at this time. Fleets and other end users seem to be turning towards products

that can help their bottom line and lower costs.”
NO COMPROMISE
Yokohama’s Phillips says that fuel-efficient tires have “absolutely” become a de facto standard spec at many fleets. He says the truck’s application helps determine the need for fuel efficiency, “but for most linehaul and many regional operations, fuel efficiency plays a major role.” “There’s always a risk involved when buyers feel forced to do something,” Michelin’s Crehan observes of the impact of the CARB and GHG rules on fleets. “But to be sure, a balanced approach is being taken by tire makers.” He says it’s Michelin’s view that “no compromise in tire performance is required to meet the new rules” and that fleet owners should have “no inherent concerns around performance” about the tires they will be getting. “That being said,” Crehan cautions, “it will still be important for fleets to work with their [dealers] to spec trucks—including their tires—correctly for the best performance in their given application. Plenty of fleets already approach fuel-efficient tires as de facto specs,” he advises. Yet others do not view them that way. “Per CARB, fleets operating in California will need SmartWay-verified tires and others will need them if required by certain [green-conscious] customers and, of course, new trucks starting in 2014 will come with low-GHG tires,” notes Crehan. “To be sure, the awareness of the effect tires have on fuel consumption is becoming more clear,” he adds. “Still, right now, there are many fleet managers who can ‘see’ their tread wear—but not the impact tires have on their fuel costs.” AT

Wheels
M
Many resources have been dedicated to producing fuelefficient tires that offer increased mileage. Reducing lifetime operating costs and weight are among other concerns customers have when it comes to today’s wheel options, manufacturers say. Alcoa Wheel Products is one of several manufacturers offering aluminum wheels that can reduce weight, provide improved fuel savings, more payload capacity, and faster return on investment. “For added fuel savings, Alcoa offers the 22.5 x 14 in. wide base aluminum wheel, the lightest in the industry [at 58 lbs.] and when coupled with SmartWay-certified wide base tires, it improves rolling resistance for fuel savings,” says Brian Thomas, marketing communications specialist. According to Thomas, a fleet switching from single steel 22.5 in. wheels to 14 in. wide base Alcoa aluminum wheels can reduce the overall weight of an 18-wheeler by nearly 1,400 lbs. “With larger payloads, due to the weight savings, trips are reduced. And since Alcoa wheels are infinitely recyclable, they’ll never see a landfill,” he adds. Another benefit of aluminum wheels, Thomas says, is in the area of maintenance. “Aluminum wheels don’t require continuous refurbishing [as] steel wheels do, such as removing rust and paint,” he says. “For example, Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels clean easily with mild soap and water; no polish is needed. ” Responding to the growing popularity of aluminum wheels, Accuride Corp. was set to invest nearly $20 million in capacity investments this year, following a $35 million investment in 2011 along with the purchase of Forgitron Technologies. The Forgitron purchase provided Accuride access to an 80,000-sq.-ft. aluminum wheel manufacturing plant in Camden, SC. The inclusion of that plant increased Accuride’s manufacturing capacity 21%. In 2011, Accuride launched the Mega-Line at its Erie, PA, plant. The Mega-Line employs a fully automated manufacturing process that uses a centralized, closedloop system for chip and coolant management. The line’s eight robots take a forged spun and heat-treated raw wheel through the turning, pre-stress, milling, coining and

Rösler surface finishing processes to produce durable, high-gloss aluminum wheels that are ready for shipment with Alcoa Dura Bright zero manual intervention. Accuride says its Accu-Armor aluminum wheel surface treatment offers a low-maintenance finish that never needs polishing and is resistant to scuffs and scratches as well as low- and high-pH chemicals commonly used in truck washes. The company says that this year’s investments include facility improvements; new machining lines; and equipment intended to optimize material flow, standardize wheel machining processes, and achieve greater surface-finish consistency for its aluminumwheel product lines. Newly formed Maxion Wheels, which was created when Iochpe-Maxion completed its purchase of HayesLemmerz earlier this year, believes it is positioned well to serve the growing needs of customers. “For years...original equipment truck manufacturers [have been trending] toward shifting their manufacturing to Mexican-based facilities,” says Mark Fonte, marketing manager for Maxion Wheels Commercial Vehicles NA. “This trend drove the demand for a second steel wheel manufacturer in the Mexican market. At Sentry Insurance, we’ve been insuring truckers since 1991. In that time, our policyholders have driven more than 18 billion miles! That’s the equivalent of driving around the Earth 700,000 times – or – taking 75,000 trips to the moon. Our insured drivers put on a lot of miles and Sentry has been with them every step of the way.
