Imagine for a moment that the U.S. replaces Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest oil producer. Think about that for a minute. Not only would the U.S. be able to fulfill its own petroleum needs, but it could export tons of the black stuff for top dollar. That vision could become a reality sooner than we think if a new report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) is anyA reversal of where close to accurate. According to one of the scenarios withenergy fortunes in the group’s 2012 edition of its annual are on the horizon World Energy Outlook, by around 2020, the U.S. should become the largest global oil producer—overtaking Saudi Arabia. By 2030, North America as a whole is predicted to become a net oil exporter, thus switching the direction of the international oil trade towards Asia. Indeed, the IEA predicts that almost 90% of Middle Eastern oil exports will be heading to Asia by 2035. The end result is that the U.S., which currently imports around 20% of its total energy needs, will become all but self-sufficient in net terms. Yet while those regional dynamics change, global energy demand will push ever higher, growing by more than one-third by 2035, with China, India and the Middle East accounting for 60% of the growth. Just think about that for a minute. No longer will the U.S. be tied strategically to the Middle East. Gotta like the sound of that. AT

DEF quality counts
T
here’s more to DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) than meets the eye, according to Old World Industries, a supplier of the fluid required for EPA 2010 diesel engines to remain in compliance while out on the road. And as more and more EPA-2010 emissions-compliant trucks and tractors hit the secondary market, it’s important to know what to look for, said Old World. Old World markets its product as BlueDEF and describes it as a ureabased fluid that converts the pollutant NOx into harmless nitrogen and water in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions-control systems. It is distributed through dispensing systems designed by Blue1USA and Micro Matic Industrial. “The challenge for the industry will be to maintain ample and uninterrupted supply as demand for DEF grows,” said Old World’s Kal Mahmood, senior vice president of commercial & OEM sales. “Our extensive supply chain offers an established distribution infrastructure. Few manufacturers have the opportunity to supply and distribute to so many diverse networks as we do.” “DEF will be a 150-million gal. market by next year—making it equivalent to the coolant market,” pointed out Old World vice president Frank T. Cook, Ph.D. “And DEF is a very competitive market because the product is 60% water,” he continued. “But unlike some other [water-based] commodity products, the purity of DEF is of great importance as the quality of the product is critical to vehicle performance.” Cook described BlueDEF as a
As trucks requiring DEF hit the secondary market, it’s important to know what the fluid is and what it is not. nontoxic solution of 67.5% purified water and 32.5% “ultra-pure” automotive-grade urea. “BlueDEF is stable, colorless and odorless, and meets ISO Standard 22241 for purity and composition and is an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified diesel exhaust fluid. These are the highest quality and safety standards in place to ensure optimum SCR performance. “We feel it remains critical to inform the market about how important DEF purity is,” he stressed. He said if it is not handled, transported or stored properly, large batches of it can be contaminated by very small amounts of foreign substances—such as a spoonful of salt added to a bulk tank of DEF. “Purity [of DEF] is key to catalyst function and integrity as SCR systems are very sensitive to chemical impurities in the urea solution,” he stated. “That’s why users are precluded from ‘mixing their own’ DEF and from putting in additives of any kind.” He added that the use of DEF helps improve diesel engine fuel economy of up to 5%, allowing truckers to gain a reduction in overall operating costs.

Snowball marketing S
o you’re wondering what to do to grow your trucking business. You’ve got plenty of ideas, but you don’t have a big marketing budget. Here’s one low-cost idea to get you started: There’s a charity fundraiser coming up, and your trucking company usually makes a donation. How about doing something different this year, especially if there’s an annual winter carnival? First, get the local scout troops together and have them make lots of snowballs. Pile them up on one of your flatbeds as “The World’s Biggest Snowball Stockpile.” Have the local charity charge people a couple of dollars to step up and use those snowballs to throw at specified targets, with prizes for the best shots. Be sure someone wins something nice from your company—maybe a pair of tickets to the local theatre production, or vouchers for dinner at a local restaurant. And hang your company banner from the flatbed, so everyone sees your trucking company’s name all day long. The charity will thank you for this new fundraising idea, and you’ll get lots of free publicity from local media. You don’t have to pay someone big bucks to come up with marketing ideas. Just keep thinking. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Pressure points
T
Trucking professionals have seen the word “cold” molded on a tire’s sidewalls next to the maximum load and corresponding inflation pressure for decades. It basically means that tire pressures should be checked when air temperatures and tire temperatures are the coolest. During the summer months, when the average low temperature is between 60 80 deg. F across There is a proper and most of the country, inflation pressures time to check cold are probably the most throughout inflation pressure consistent a fleet. But in the fall, ambient temperatures can have a much wider spread, which leads to problems. For example, at the time this article was written, the lowest high temperature was 38 deg. F in the Northern Rocky Mountains; the highest high temperature was 91 deg. F at the tip of Texas and Southern Arizona. A truck that leaves the North with tires inflated to 100 psi will have inflation pressures that read around 110 psi when it reaches the South, and “cool” off to an ambient temperature that is about 50 deg. warmer. Likewise, the truck in the South that starts at 100 psi in 90 deg. F weather will read about 90 psi when the temperatures reach around 40 deg. in the North. The general rule is that inflation pressure changes by 2 psi for every 10 deg. F change in temperature. When the tire gets hotter, the inflation pressure goes up because the air molecules increase in volume; when the tire cools, the temperature goes down because the volume of air decreases. It’s called Boyle’s Law and it states that pressure and volume are inversely proportional so in a contained pressure vessel like a tire, any changes in volume will be reflected in pressure.
14 American Trucker/December 2012
This is an important time of year to check inflation pressures. Tires that have been getting through the summer months with partial underinflation are soon going to be exposed to cooler fall mornings. At 95 psi, a 295/75R22.5 can carry 5,070 lbs. in a dual application, so the tires can support the full 20,000 lbs. allowed on a single axle in most states. In the previous South to North example, the carrying capacity drops to 4,690 lbs. when the inflation pressure falls to 85 psi. This means a fully loaded vehicle will be overloaded even though the tires were able to carry the weight the previous day when the temperatures were warmer. It’s also important to note that in the same South to North example, the 95 psi tire may still read close to 95 psi when it first reaches the colder temperatures. While the increased heat from the flexing sidewalls causes the temperature and inflation pressure to rise, the cooler air temperatures offset those increases to some degree. In the North, the technician or driver who sees 100 psi on the gauge at the end of the day is practically guaranteed to see much lower inflation pressures the following morning. Maintaining proper inflation pressure is vital for tire performance and fuel economy. Underinflated tires are more prone to failure and irregular wear and can quickly have a negative impact on the bottom line. Nobody wants to check tire pressures on a chilly fall morning, but the consequences of ignoring the change in temperature can be expensive. And while it should be done on a regular basis regardless of time of year, the process of installing “winter air” is more important than ever with tire and fuel prices near record-high levels. AT

HEAVY HAUL
Spec’d right Choosing the right equipment and staying focused are critical elements in moving the largest loads
N
Neil Perkins could be forgiven for understating what he means by “big, heavy things.” The president of Northfield, MN-based Perkins Specialized Transportation Contracting is referring to transporting extreme dimension and super-heavy cargo—payloads that generally weigh between 100,000 and 800,000 lbs.— and have included things like steam turbines, bridge beams, and even gun mounts for naval destroyers. “Typically, our cargo is too heavy for conventional highway transporters up to and including 19-axle combinations,” Perkins explains. “It also cannot be cleared for dimensional rail transportation and is too heavy to lift by helicopter.” In 2011, Perkins began handling its largest load ever, transporting the first two of four steam generators it was contracted to haul over more than 950 mi. from a power plant in California to a storage site in Utah. Each generator measured 47 ft. long by 15 ft. wide by 14 ft. 9 in. high and weighed in at 804,000 lbs. Loaded,
the rig stretched 399 ft. and had a gross combination weight of 1.5 million lbs. For Perkins, finding and retaining good qualified field operations personnel is the number-one issue the company faces today. That includes highly trained drivers and crew members, escort operators, and supervisors. As much a contractor as a trucking company, the firm focuses as much effort on having the right equipment as it does on employing the right people. “We have seven full-time engineers in-house who design our vehicles and work with suppliers to plan exactly how the equipment will be specified,” says Perkins.
MULTIPLE CONFIGURATIONS
Trailer equipment in the Perkins operation can be configured in over 4,000 different combinations. Suppliers include Goldhofer, Trail King, Aspen, XL Specialized, and Talbert Manufacturing, as well as other manufacturers.

A fleet of 26 tractors used for both pushing and pulling loads has been specifically designed by Perkins to handle extreme weights under all types of road and weather conditions. “We review our tractors on a five-year rotation because it’s a very involved process,” explains Perkins. “About a year before we’re scheduled to replace tractors, we’ll start reviewing specs and asking manufacturers for proposals.” In general, a tractor in the Perkins fleet weighs 34,000 lbs. empty, about double the empty weight of an overthe-road tractor designed to handle general freight. The price difference is also significant—each Perkins tractor costs about $400,000. Currently, the newest tractors at Perkins are Mack Titan models. They feature 605-hp. hether you’re a truck fleet or a trailer factory, welding is usually a part of the shop picture. Fleets that run their own maintenance shops often call upon a welder for frame repairs or to make other fixes requiring an acetylene torch to fuse metal together. It’s no different in a trailer factory, either, where welding is a crucial step in fusing together essential components of a trailer’s structure. But the fumes and gases emitted during welding can be hazardous to a person’s health, so maintenance shops and/or factories where a lot of welding takes place typi-

T
o solve this two-sided problem, Felling enlisted the services of KVA Engineering, an air handling company located in Corcoran, MN. KVA installed three “air exchange” ventilation system units at Felling’s facility, with the first installed in 2008 and subsequent systems installed in 2009 2011 as part of plant expansions. SOLUTION andFeela says that because welding fumes are hot and hot air rises, the air exchange system is located near the ceiling with high efficiency exhaust fans designed to capture welding fumes and gases at their source and remove them so that they never enter the welders’ breathing zones. Use of welding guns also help to extract fumes from the air, he notes. Feela adds that ducts are evenly distributed throughout the welding bays so the ventilation system pulls the fumes and hot air away from wherever a welder is working. Consequently, it keeps the air quality clear. Once the welding fumes and hot air are captured in the ductwork, they are transported to the filter unit and fan at a rate of about 3,000 ft./min. They are then pushed through a high efficiency cartridge filter with a 99.9% efficiency rate, thus returning clean air back into

cally rely upon heavy-duty exhaust fans to vent vapors. For shops and other welding facilities located in notoriously wintry states such as Minnesota, however, venting systems end up bringing in super cold air from outside the building. This not only causes discomfort among personnel but also boosts the facility’s heating bills. “That’s one of the big problems with a traditional venting system; all of the building’s heat gets drawn out while letting all the cold air in,” explains Doug Feela, maintenance director for Felling Trailers. He says Felling’s air purging system allowed an enormous amount of heat loss, especially in the winter months.
the plant. After all of the air is cleaned, it is recirculated through the ductwork into the welding bays. The system pulls 100% of the welding fumes out of the welding bay and exchanges the air within 10 min., making it extremely efficient. Not only does this process keep the air nice and clean, it provides a cleaner work environment and improved air quality for workers—all while minimizing heat loss. “Installing this air exchange system in our facilities was well worth it; there is a night and day difference,” notes Feela. “The air is recirculated at high speed to cleanse it of fumes, yet the heat doesn’t go away; we maintain about 61 deg. F in the plant. While the ‘air exchange’ systems were initially costly, we built up significant savings from the heat retention as time went on.” He adds that there’s also the huge benefit of keeping personnel comfortable, and they don’t need to wear heavy jackets and gloves like before to stay warm during the workday. “We’ve found that it’s made them far more productive,” Feela says. “We’ve realized several different sets of savings versus our old exhaust fan system.” —SEAN KILCARR

The road ahead
End of the year is perfect time to review your business plan B Y T I M B R A D Y, B U S I N E S S E D I T O R

t’s that time of year. Do you know where your business is? If not already completed, it’s time for that inquisition as to where your business was a year ago, six months ago, and where it stands today. This is the only way you can determine its direction for the following year. Yes, this is the time for family, friends and holiday celebrations. Unless you have a definitive plan of action for your company for next year, however, the celebration may be very short-lived. Let’s examine the process of
evaluating your company: revenue, costs, customers, vendors, employees, and contractors. ❑ Review and update your business plan. Many people think a business plan is a document required to obtain financing and attract investors. While that’s one purpose of a business plan, its most important purpose is as a road map with directions you can reference to move your company towards continuing profits. Review your plan annually at a minimum; evaluate whether the original plan is working; and make adjustments where needed to sustain and grow the operation.

Not having a business plan—or not conducting a regular review of it—is like having a set of complicated directions to a delivery point and attempting to find it by relying on your memory. The chances of making a wrong turn and ending up someplace you hadn’t intended are increased substantially. ❑ Financials. Make sure your financial records are complete and organized, including your profit and loss statement, balance sheet, revenue statement, and cash flow statement. This allows you to check the financial health of your business. Did you achieve the revenue

goals you established a year ago? At what rate did costs go up or down over the past year? Did your overall business improve or decline? Is there a pattern that can be discerned across your financials? Is this a positive or negative pattern? You’ll see a distinct picture develop from a study of these documents. Graphs of each of these documents will make it easier to decipher and distinguish patterns. You’ll more easily see when boom periods occurred and when low revenue times happened, and how they affected both profitability and costs during each of these periods. ❑ Operations. You most likely noticed some inefficiencies in your business from the financials review. What were the recurring problems that you encountered? Maybe your load finding process can be streamlined, or shippers’ and receivers’ loading/unloading can be streamlined. Maybe it’s time for defined freight lanes for each of your trucks. Analyze these weaknesses and develop a strategy for fixing them. ❑ Marketing and sales. Review your marketing plan. If your strategies aren’t working effectively, develop ideas to reach out to current customers while also finding and cultivating new ones. If you don’t have a marketing plan, make that a priority for the coming year. This is also a good time to review your sales strategy. Good customer relationships are important to your business. Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of your employees and contractors over the last year. Did they achieve the goals you established for them? Did you receive favorable reports from shippers, receivers, freight brokers, or others they had contact with regarding your business? What was lacking in customer service that needs to be addressed? Did any of them shine in how they handled a difficult situation? Could this experience be used to teach others how to handle the next challenge? What was your employee turnover rate for the year? OIL CHANGE Modern engines are pushing the need for more choices

n just a few years’ time, the heavy-duty engine oil arena is very likely to get more complicated for truck owners—albeit for very good reasons. The release of a new American Petroleum Institute (API) service category for heavy-duty motor oil (such as the current CJ-4) always starts with a discussion by engine makers and lube formulators of a “Proposed Category” (PC). That’s not unusual. But this time around, the Proposed Category under discussion—PC-11—may well lead to the release of not one but two new API oil-service categories. To fully grasp what’s now driving heavy-duty engine oil development and thus PC-11, first look at the next wave of federal environmental rules for trucks. In a few years, truck OEMs in concert with engine makers will have to meet greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and corresponding miles per gallon (mpg) increases for commercial vehicles that will go into effect in stages from 2014 to 2018. Truck and engine builders are expecting motor oil to help them hit those targets. That’s why they have petitioned API for new oil-service categories. If created out of PC-11, the new categories would supplant the current CJ-4 category and become available for licensing via API by oil formulators on Jan. 1, 2016. The entity charged with recommending whether to proceed with a new oil category is called the New Category Evaluation Team (NCET). It’s comprised of representatives from the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Assn. (EMA), API, and the American Chemistry Council (ACC) as well as members drawn from oil additive suppliers and industry testing labs. NCET must consider “all information being presented by engine makers to see how developing and releasing a new API category would affect

the marketplace, other existing API categories and the environment,” advises Dan Arcy, global OEM technical manager for Shell Global Solutions and NCET chair. “The team must also consider the timing of the request, whether or not there are tests available [to prove it out], and if there is sufficient data to support changes in engine design.” NCET’s recommendation will either be a “yes” or a “no” by consensus. According to Arcy, a decision on whether or not PC-11 will be split into two proposed categories will likely not be formally made until sometime next year. If NCET does recommend proceeding, creation of the new category is taken up by the Heavy-Duty Oil Classification Panel of the American Society of Testing & Materials (ASTM). This panel is charged with setting limits and verifying testing for the development of API oil classifications. The technical specs are ultimately relayed to API for licensing. “PC-11 was launched to address the reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from truck engines [due to the GHG/MPG rules] and to help engines be more fuel-efficient,” says Arcy. “The PC-11 challenge will be to develop specs for engine lubes to meet the need to cut CO2 and provide a fuel-economy benefit while not compromising engine life and durability.” And that is such a tall order that EMA “recommended that PC-11 be

split into two subcategories because of the desire to improve fuel efficiency while ensuring corresponding [protection] performance levels,” Arcy relates. If they come to fruition, each of these new categories would help engines meet the lower CO2 standards of the GHG/MPG rules. Now the kicker: The difference between the categories would center on their impact on fuel efficiency. Under the dual-oil scenario, the first new category would be formulated to “preserve the historical heavy-duty oil criteria [as represented by the current CJ-4 category] and be backward-compatible with existing on- and off-highway engines,” explains Arcy. While the second new category would also maintain engine durability, it would, in addition, deploy a lower-viscosity formula to significantly boost fuel efficiency compared to current CJ-4 15W-40 oils.
OIL DRIVERS
What’s more, according to Arcy, that second, fuel-efficient oil would provide only “limited backwardcompatibility,” the actual scope of which would depend on OEM and engine maker requirements and vehicle applications. There are other drivers pushing the development of PC-11. “NCET wants to address changes in the hardware of engines manufactured since 2006 as well as deal with the obsolescence of many of the engine tests used to develop an oil-service category,” says Arcy. “It’s worth noting that by the time work is done on this new category or categories, 10 years will have elapsed since the last category [CJ-4] came out.” The lubrication engineer who has chaired the ASTM Heavy-Duty Oil Classification Panel for the last 25 years—during which time seven new oil-service categories have been

ENGINE ISSUES
OEMs want a new oil category to assist in reducing fuel consumption. introduced—is Jim McGeehan, global manager of diesel engine oil technology for Chevron Lubricants. He affirms that the stated goal of EMA to have two new categories in place for licensing in 2016 is “still the position today, and there is no indication they will change it.”
DURABILITY MATTERS
“Having [just] one oil that does it all is not feasible based on how the OEMs will specify their approvals,” McGeehan asserts. “For the offroad vehicle segment of customers, those OEMs have indicated today they want an oil that is backwardcompatible with a normal oil film thickness for the upcoming new category; they are more interested in durability of their engines than fuel economy. “On-road vehicle OEMs are interested in trying to achieve the best fuel economy from their vehicles to meet upcoming federal regulations but also to support customers who are trying to minimize the impact of fuel costs,” he continues. “This means that an on-road customer may have a choice between normal film thickness or one that is thinner based on the fuel economy performance they are targeting.” McGeehan adds that it is also
“possible that, after testing, onhighway vehicle manufacturers may decide the fuel economy oil is backward-compatible with their older vehicles. If so, then more fleets may adopt the maximum fuel economy formulation that has a thinner viscosity film to try and incrementally improve fuel economy performance and help lower their total cost of operation.” “The new fuel-efficient, heavyduty engine oil will, by design, provide improvements in fuel economy,” remarks Victor Kersey, technical director for Valvoline Commercial Products. “The degree of improvement will be affected by engine make and model, driving conditions (both driver and duty cycle), and the oil’s ability to maintain fuel efficiency throughout the oil drain interval. “It will be less challenging to formulate two oils,” he continues. “One will be a fully backward-compatible product with possible traditional viscometrics, such as SAE 15W-40. The second will be a lower-viscosity oil providing fuel economy benefits. Backward-compatibility is unlikely for the 5W-30 lower-HTHS (high temperature/high shear) FE (fuel economy) version.” “I believe that the technology will

Roll all the expectations together for what PC-11 will have to accomplish and the list of expected improvements to heavy-duty motor oil that Shell’s Arcy touts includes better oxidation stability, aeration, and shear stability; less adhesive wear or “scuffing”; and compatibility with engines running biodiesel blends. Along with helping meet GHG/ MPG targets and continuing to protect engine life and durability, PC-11 will also need to consider concerns raised by engine makers regarding the interaction of motor oil and engine designs as well as the updating of the various engine tests deployed to prove out a new category. Kersey observes that the need for PC-11 is also driven by the “increased use of biodiesel fuel, engine oil foaming concerns, and improved protection from higher engine operating temperatures.” He says the upshot is “engine oil formulators will be facing several new oil performance tests with PC-11. These are likely to include new oxidation, ring wear, piston scuffing, oil aeration, and viscosity increase tests.” Chevron’s McGeehan says that some engine tests will be carried over from CJ-4 based on their “current robustness.” He also points out that several tests are being developed for this category along with corresponding test-limit recommendations. “An example of some of the possible new tests under development are the Mack T-13 and Daimler DD13 [Daimler OM 471], which are designed to measure wear and piston liner scuffing, respectively,” McGeehan notes. “However, these

tests have not reached the point of development for inclusion into the category-testing program as of this date. The final decision...will be decided by June 2013.” Lower-viscosity oil grades will appear prominently on the table as PC-11 is investigated and presumably advances, whether to one or two new service categories. “Engine wear protection with fuelefficient technology will be a goal [of PC-11],” relates Citgo’s Betner. “We have had fuel-efficient oil technology in the marketplace for some time, however, with excellent results in terms of engine life and engine wear protection. “There’s no mystery to fuel-efficient [oil] technology,” he continues. “Engine oil viscosity in diesel engines is the key driver to achieving fuel efficiency. If fuel economy is the main driver behind reducing CO2 per tonmile, then the contribution of engine oil fuel efficiency will be the main component—and again, that will come through [lower] viscosity. “In my opinion,” Betner adds, “we have the capability and technology to deliver on both [fuel efficiency and engine protection]. It’s a matter of how well this [two-oil scenario] can be introduced to the industry.” According to Chevron’s McGeehan, moving to lower-viscosity oils “enables fuel economy improvements.” He says that today, 85% of the oils in the marketplace are SAE 15W-40 as API CJ-4 or CI-4 PLUS oils. “Chevron markets lower-viscosity grades, including SAE 5W-30, SAE 5W-40 and SAE 10W-30, that meet API CJ-4 and have fuel economy benefits over our primary SAE 15W-40 viscosity grade,” he notes. “Currently,” McGeehan adds, “the SAE 10W-30 grade is growing the fastest of all the grades because of its fuel economy benefit and the fact that engine manufacturers such as Volvo, Detroit Diesel and Cummins are now recommending this grade, particu-

past lesson
Looking ahead at the challenge of bringing two oil formulations to market, Citgo’s Betner invokes a lesson from the past. “It was difficult for some fleet owners to depart from single-grade oils when SAE 15W-40 was introduced. Back in the early ’80s, after making a presentation to
a large fleet in an attempt to explain how SAE 15W-40 could help, I was told that 15W-40 would never work in diesel engines. Thirty years later we know how that came out.” Valvoline’s Kersey says there is concern about the potential for confusion among customers. “The burden will be upon the industry to properly educate end users on viscosity grades, performance levels/API categories, backward-compatibility effects, durability concerns and fuel economy.” “There are many challenges associated with a new category, especially one with the potential complexity of PC-11,” says Chevron’s McGeehan. “For example, the label must be very different for the [resulting] ‘SAE XW-30’ to prevent misapplication. The backward-compatible oil may be named API ‘CK-4’ and the maximum fuel economy formulation could go by another API designation, such as ‘API HD’ oil.” However the nomenclature is worked out, it will matter greatly to clearly communicate the difference between the two oil categories—if indeed there are two—to all users of heavy-duty engine oil come 2016. Changing engines in today’s vehicles to meet emissions requirements are having a ripple effect on oil filters. Higher temperatures, flow rates, and larger amounts of contaminant are changing the demands of filters and forcing manufacturers to adjust their product lines. “Baldwin Filters has evolved along with the industry. Sometimes it is hard to distinguish newer technology just from the appearance of the filter,” says Ken Stirn, directorproduct management at Baldwin Filters. “Continuing research and development allows Baldwin Filters to implement the latest media and design technologies that will not only allow us to meet the engine requirements but exceed them in many cases. This ongoing R&D will allow us to be at the forefront of emerging filtration technologies.” Baldwin’s high velocity dual-flow model filter line is designed to meet these requirements. The filters provide improved engine protection during extended oil drain intervals, high idle time, and harsh operating conditions, the company says. The filters have one inlet and one outlet; oil flows through the filter and is sent directly to the engine rather than a portion of it being returned to the sump. The filters can be used on Cummins ISM, ISX and Series 600 engines. Puradyn Filter Technologies is extremely focused on helping fleets extend drain intervals. According to Kevin G. Kroger, president & COO, the safe extension of the oil drain means maintaining the chemical balance of the oil while removing solid contaminants that can create friction wear. It is also “important to make sure that the filtration performance of the bypass filter removes solid contaminants to below 1 micron. This is the oil film clearance found in engines, thus reducing engine wear, new oil purchases, waste oil generation, and downtime,” he adds. Going forward, Puradyn is working with polymer technologies that are “providing ways of improving the filtration efficiency of our system as well as disbursement of the additives and improved liquid contaminant removal,” Kroger says. “Wix Filters’ new XP oil filter line is engineered for today’s toughest driving conditions,” explains Donald Chilton, North American product development manager

for Wix Filters. “Wix XP filters provide the ultimate protection, offering technology for the latest advancements in synthetic oil and extended mileage.” Introduced in 2011, Wix ecoLast oil filters capture dirt and soot like a traditional filter but use media to “sequester” the acids in the oil. Wix says the ecoLast filtration media has no similar competition on the market and does not rely on slow release Wix says its eco- technology. In addition, the media is Last is unique to effective with both conventional and the market in the synthetic lubes as well as with biodieway it “seques- sel, LPG, gasoline and diesel fuels, the company notes. ters”acids. Purchasing a filter that just meets extended oil drain requirements, though, is not necessarily a recipe for success for any fleet. “Selecting the right lube filter is … balancing efficiency, capacity and restriction,” says Rod Radosevich, marketing manager for Donaldson Filtration Solutions. “Donaldson Synteq media technology provides the optimal balance of all three. Our Endurance lube filters remove more than 90% of contaminants 10 microns or larger, compared to 50% or fewer for typical cellulose filters [with] nearly double the contaminant-carrying capacity of standard cellulose filters.” The company also recommends its Endurance EOA7376 oil analysis test kit. According to Radosevich, oil analysis offers high fuel dilution, which can result in oil thinning, reduced oil pressure, and allow harmful metalto-metal contact. It can detect when fuel, excessive soot

Cline recommends getting an oil service before the suggested manufacturer’s oil drain interval. “If I had an option for a bypass oil filter on my new truck, that would come before anything else,” he says. “An OEM oil filter and bypass oil cleaner like the Racor absolute bypass oil cleaner … reduces the particle count cleanliness level to below standard filtration level [and] removes moisture, soot and wear particles.” The absolute bypass oil cleaner filters oil down to 3 microns and absorbs moisture, Cline says. 10% of the lube oil supply and runs it through a highspeed rotating cartridge [removing particulates and soot],” he adds. Luber-finer offers the Imperial XL (extended life) filter, a premium-quality, heavy-duty lube filter that it says is for high dust, off- and on-highway applications, and extended drain intervals. A spin-on oil filter, the Imperial XL design features increased capacity and improved performance during low temperature start-ups and full load operations. Luber-finer says the filter is designed to be lighter and easily recycled with as much as 15% increased media capacity. The filter is made of micro-glass synthetic and cellulose media that provide high filtering efficiency and dirt-holding capacity, the company said. Cummins Filtration recommends a bypass filtration system. Bypass systems are capable of removing smaller micron-sized particles. To deal with this, the company offers the Fleetguard line of filters, including its Venturi Combo Design filters. According to the company, the Venturi nozzle directs an optimized flow of oil through the stacked disc media section, which offers up to four times the total capacity of a full-flow only filter.

t’s not easy for American Trucker’s editorial staff to pick a single truck from all the sweet iron chronicled in our Readers’ Rigs section month after month and declare it the “best of the best” for the year. And while Larry and Jeanette Pruitt’s 2007 Mack tractor might not be an old school classic or covered in chrome and bling, a certain special “something” kept bringing our team of judges back to it. For starters, it’s a truck dedicated to two of Larry Pruitt’s passions: firefighting, which is something he’s done since age 15, and truck driving. Both Larry’s father and father-

in-law were truckers, so it seemed to be a natural second job for him when not donning his heavy rubber boots and gear to battle blazes. “Indeed, I used to ride with my dad a little when I was a kid,” Pruitt told American Trucker. When he got a paid firefighting job in St. Louis 20 years ago, he settled into a “split routine” of sorts: 48 hours on duty as a fireman, followed by four days off —days when he jumped behind the wheel of a dump truck to haul topsoil. A Mack truck fan, Pruitt eventually turned in his dump truck for a highway tractor so he could pull tankers for his father-in-law’s (now brother-in-law’s) business.

A few years back, Pruitt recalled seeing a 2007 Rawhide model Mack Pinnacle tractor operated by Circuit City in his rearview mirror. “‘Man,’ I said to myself, ‘what a sharplooking truck!’” Pruitt related. As it happened, he got his hands on that very same unit when Circuit City went belly up and the tractor ended up at a Mack dealer he knew in St. Louis. Originally, he felt a fresh coat of paint and little touches of chrome would be all that he’d need. But a spur-of-themoment entry into the Truckers Jamboree held at the Iowa 80 Truckstop—where his Mack won a prize—encouraged him to turn things up a notch … or five. “I have two antique Mack trucks and the first thing I told myself was that I needed a theme for this one and that I should stick with that theme,” Pruitt said. “For me, it was a no-brainer to go with the firefighter theme.” Pruitt took a year getting the paint color and graphics just right, adding a firefighting “bulldog” in full regalia not just on the hood but on the gearshif as well. Te best part, Pruitt said, are the awards he’s received for all the work he’s put into his Mack. “I remember sitting on an overturned bucket with a cup of tea at about 3 a.m. afer polishing [the truck] for what seemed like forever. I kept telling myself, ‘I’d better win something for all this work or I’ll have to seriously rethink what I’m doing here,’” he recalled. “Now, I just laugh at myself for thinking that.”
