Taxman cometh

W

We all know the old saw about the only two certainties in life (those would be “death and taxes” of course), but truckers should expect a keener focus on the second of those certainties in the not-so-distant days ahead. According to a recent survey of 890 corporate tax executives conducted by consulting firm KPMG, the federal government and states are turning up the heat on With revenue corporate tax audit activities. Nearly two-thirds (61%) of those corshortfalls, taxes porate tax executives polled by KPMG said federal tax dispute activity had are heading up increased in the past 12 months, while more than one-third (37%) said the total number of state tax audits in jurisdictions in which they do business increased. The majority of respondents to KPMG’s survey expect this trend of increased audit activity at the federal and state level to continue. Over the next 12 months, 67% of the respondents expect federal tax dispute activity to increase, while 53% expect state tax audit activity in jurisdictions in which they do business to increase. “Federal, state and local governments are all taking extra measures to ensure that they are not leaving any corporate tax revenue on the table as many are facing budget shortfalls,” noted Frank Lavadera, principal-in-charge of KPMG’s Tax Dispute Resolution Services Network. And you can bet that the taxman is going to remain focused like a laser on the business community for some time to come. AT

emember, you are in charge. Most of what happens in your business is within your control, if you know what lies ahead. You can’t control certain events, but you can steer around them or take a different route to reach the financial destination of your business. The business of trucking is cyclical. It’s always going to have its ups and downs. We can’t control weather, fuel prices, regulations, competition, etc. We can prepare for worst-case scenarios, control and manage what we can, and have a strategic plan in place if business begins to waiver and fall. The most important part of this is to understand the possibilities and then have a plan to deal with each one should it occur. The more prepared you are with multiple options, the smoother your business will run. You wouldn’t drive over a mountain pass in winter without snow chains hung on a rack ready for use; you hope you don’t need them, but you’ve got them if necessary. It’s all about planning regardless of whether you’re talking about rolling down the road or finding a replacement load for the one that just canceled. It’s about being one step ahead at all times, and staying in control. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. lean Diesel Technologies announced that its Purifilter Plus diesel particulate filter (DPF) emissions reduction system has received an expanded verification from both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB). It is now approved for retrofit in 2002 through 2009 model-year exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) heavy-duty diesel engines manufactured by International Truck and Engine Corp. Purifilter Plus, which reduces emissions of diesel particulate matter by more than 85% and meets 2009 nitrogen dioxide emissions limits, combines a passively regenerating ECS Purifilter DPF with the active regeneration components of an ECS Combifilter. This results in a hybrid DPF that has no minimum exhaust temperature requirement, making it efficient under even the most challenging vehicle operating conditions, according to a company announcement. The manufacturer said that the user can easily maintain the system by periodically plugging it into a regeneration control panel that may be shared between several vehicles, thus reducing the maintenance requirements when compared to traditional passive DPF solutions. The Purifilter Plus line of products is available in retrofit applications for a wide variety of small and large fleet operators such as municipal, state and utility fleet vehicles, refuse trucks, and urban delivery vehicles, which are being required to comply with increasing government-mandated emissions reduction requirements. Full verification details are available on the EPA website at www.epa.gov and the CARB website at www.arb.ca.gov.

Finding a foothold

W

With the recent announcement from Continental that the first licensee has been signed for its new ContiLifeCycle dealer network, fleets can expect more changes in the already crowded lineup of retread manufacturers. Prior to the Continental expansion, Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin (the Big Three) were the only tire companies to offer a retreading system for their new tire dealers. Now that there is another in the game, Retread success player the industry should for more still depends on prepare shifts. and forecost, performance most,First it’s important to recognize that there is very little “new” retread business so any gains by one company will likely come at the expense of another. According to industry estimates, about 14.3 million truck tires were retreaded in 2010, and more than 93% of that business was controlled by Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin. While each of those tread rubber manufacturers have company-owned retread plants and distribution channels, they still rely heavily on their independent dealer network. Retread technology has improved significantly over the past few years, which makes it much easier for a company like Continental to enter the race. Many of the independent retreaders that are still in business have the in-house expertise and equipment to make any system work because they have learned to become less dependent on the tread rubber companies. In the old days, switching from one supplier to another was a lengthy process that could interrupt business for an extended period of time. With the advancements in technology, it’s reached the point where some retreaders could switch suppliers

16 American Trucker/December 2011

tomorrow without skipping a beat. The current marketing strategies for the major retread manufacturers put a lot of emphasis on the premise that using Brand A’s rubber compound and design that is identical to the Brand A original casing will yield better performance. While I don’t have any data to prove or disprove that ideology, I can say that the appearance of a “replica retread” can be difficult to distinguish from a new tire to the untrained eye. At a recent Technology & Maintenance Council SuperTech meeting, the contestants and attendees were asked to “spot the retreads.” Sponsored by the Tire Retread and Repair Information Bureau, it was surprising to see how many people had trouble determining which tires were retreads and which tires were brand new. For someone like me, it’s easy because I know what to look for. But the average fleet executive or technician is going to have to look very closely to tell the difference. It’s difficult to predict whether or not ContiLifeCycle will cut into the market share of the Big Three because so much of that business is tied to national accounts. Another retread company named Marangoni entered the North American market about 13 years ago and a lot of people thought they would never make it in the U.S. under similar conditions. They’ve now grown to hold a 4% share of the retread business because they have independent retreaders who believe in the product. In the real world, however, physical appearance and marketing campaigns have very little meaning to a fleet. It’s all about cost and performance, so the success of any retread company will be determined by the customers— as it has always been. AT

Getting it right Hauler focuses on spec’ing the right equipment for the job

I

I t’s hard to say what the largest or heaviest item is that Parish Leasing has handled as a heavy haul carrier. For Eric Parish, vice president of the seven-year-old Ellisville, MS-based family-owned business, it’s a toss-up. “There was the 24-ft., 7-in.-wide boiler weighing 170,000 lbs.,” Parish says. “We also use Schnable style 9and 13-axle trailers on a fairly regular basis to move equipment to wind power job sites.” The Trail King Hydraulic Schnable System trailers at Parish Leasing are designed specifically to load and unload wind tower sections. Using cylinders that lower and tilt the towers for transporting and for placing them into position, the unique trailers can carry heavy and oversized loads in such a way that the load, suspended between the two ends of the cars by lifting arms, makes up part of the vehicle. Parish Leasing also fields 7- to 13-axle lowboy trailers for handling a variety of heavy loads, including transformers and other oversized and overweight items. Fifty-five ton trailers are used to haul concrete houses. Operating across the U.S. and in Canada, the diversified company also fields 15 Reitnouer flatbeds, including five new units purchased this year, to haul more traditional freight.

A particular specialty is handling produce, such as palletized loads of onions in 50-lb. sacks, on the flatbeds equipped with aluminum side kits. That equipment, Parish notes, lets the carrier haul traditional loads to help eliminate empty mileage on backhauls.

TRUCK SPEC’ING While a large part of his focus is on trailers to haul heavy loads, Parish has not lost sight of the need for highly capable power units. In the fleet are 25 Western Star tractors dating from 2007 through 2012 models. Another three 2013 models are being built for the company. Parish Leasing’s primary tractor is the Western Star 4900 in configurations including SB with a setback front axle, the SF set-forward axle design, and a few with low-ride heights. Some units are equipped with the OEM’s 54-in. low roof Stratosphere sleeper and others are day cabs. “We need to be able to handle legal loads as well as heavy hauls with payloads of 140,000 lbs.,” Parish relates. “Weight distribution is very critical so we use different tractor configurations to get the right amount of [weight distribution on each] axle. We spec front axles

rated from 14,900 to 20,000 lbs. and wide track rear axles with air ride suspensions. We also have models equipped with 52,000-lb. two-speed rears and 20,000-lb. Hendrickson pusher axles. The newest Western Stars in the Parish Leasing fleet are powered by Detroit Diesel DD15 engines rated at 560 hp. and 1,850 lbs.-ft. of torque. Earlier DD15 engines in the fleet are rated at 505 hp., and there are some 2007 models with Caterpillar C15 engines rated up to 650 hp. and 2,050 lbs.-ft. of torque. Eaton Fuller 13-, 15- and 18-spd. transmissions have been standard at Parish Leasing, but the most recent orders have called for the manufacturer’s 10-spd. gearboxes. “We made the change without sacrificing performance,” Parish explains. “The 10 spds. are covered by extended warranties, weigh less, and we’ve seen an improvement in fuel efficiency, with those tractors now averaging almost 7 mpg. “To handle heavy hauls reliably, efficiently and safely, you have to know your equipment needs,” says Parish. “The right suppliers help us make the best choices so we can rely on our fleet to get the job done successfully and continue to expand our business.”

very trucker knows to keep his eyes focused on what’s in front of his truck and what he can see in the mirrors. But it’s equally necessary to anticipate what’s happening over the next hill, around the next bend, and beyond the horizon so he’s more prepared for what the road will toss into his path. For example, the trucker observes what the trucks look like coming from the other direction. Much like

grandma’s weather forecasting, if the truck is wet, it’s raining up the road; covered with ice or snow, there’s frozen precipitation not too far away. Then there’s looking at the sky on the horizon, the old mariner’s “red sky in morning, sailor take warning” is excellent advice for truckers. The type of clouds or heavy dust in the air all indicate what’s to come. This same vigilance needs to be applied by trucking company owners as they look ahead to what the

To stay ahead in the freight-hauling game, you need to stay on top of all the possible scenarios that might happen over the next year. Too many truckers tend to rely strictly on trucking industry news to assemble their strategic planning. business of trucking sites that you should check that will provide relevant information. It’s about knowing all there is to know in the niche in which you haul. You need to be knowledgeable in every aspect of your customers’ business. Here’s a list of information to help you achieve this goal: ❑ Is your customer’s industry growing or shrinking? As a hauler, you need to be aware of everything from companies being acquired and absorbed, to moving operations overseas, to being an industry in decline. On the other side of this coin, is this an industry on the verge of expanding, and at what rate will this expansion occur? Are stock prices going up more than down, or the reverse, or do they seem to be stagnant? What types of government regulations are being considered and which are being implemented and when? Are these going to have a positive affect or a negative impact on what you haul?

As you can see, there are a number of events and actions involving your shippers and receivers that can and will impact your hauling business. The more you know in advance, the better decisions can be made on who and what to haul and where it’s most profitable for your operation. The resources for this specific information include the local business

This will mean products sold could be things like crafts, gardening supplies, movies, games, and other means of home entertainment. ❑ Inventions: Some of the best ideas and inventions come from our darkest times. Even Budweiser, the ‘King of Beers,’ profited during Prohibition by selling canned water and barley cereal.

NEWS SOURCES When doing your research, go to the websites of industry-specific trade magazines, as well as major financial publications such as Barron’s, Bloomberg News, Kiplinger Report and Wall Street Journal. ❑ What about specific shippers and their customers? Are they individually increasing or reducing their workforce? Are they consolidating operations? Are they cutting costs? Increasing production, or are they losing or gaining market share? Another excellent source is for you to set up a ‘news alert’ on Google News for the companies and industries for which you do your hauling. This will provide you with daily or weekly alerts to the events involving your customers, lending you insight as to what might happen in the future. What about the customers of your customers, the American consumer? Additional information could come from how businesses respond to the changing habits of consumers. New federal GHG/MPG mandates putting pressure on motor oil

T

ruckers never want anything but the best protection and fuel efficiency for their expensive engine investments, and that is especially true of independent truckers and small trucking operations, which rely on the reliability of those engines to keep producing revenue. And engine makers and truck OEMs continue to work diligently toward solutions that satisfy those concerns. Bolstering the confidence of everyone involved are the lubricant suppliers, who not only play an important role in engine durability, but whose role will be expanding significantly as mandated greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG) and miles-per-gallon (mpg) regulations begin to phase in three years from now. Truckers will expect motor oil to contribute to the process in meeting those requirements. That’s why engine makers have already petitioned for a new American Petroleum Institute (API) oil-service category to be in place by the time the new federal rules go fully into effect. Under the rules, buses and medium- and heavyduty trucks as well as pickups and vans will be required to meet federally mandated fuel-efficiency levels designed to reduce the amount of GHG emissions they produce. Developed jointly by the Dept. of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with input from the trucking industry, environmental groups, and state governments—especially California—the standards will go into effect in stages from 2014 to 2018 and impose different fuel-efficiency targets based on the size and weight

Go to

of given vehicle types. For example, most tractor-trailers will be required to achieve up to about a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and GHG emissions by model-year 2018, which the government estimates will save up to 4 gals. of fuel for every 100 mi. traveled. Vocational vehicles, including delivery trucks, buses, and refuse trucks, will be required to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by about 10% by model-year 2018, which should save an average of 1 gal. of fuel for every 100 mi. traveled.

VARYING TARGETS For heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans, separate standards are required for gasoline- and diesel-powered trucks. These vehicles will be required to achieve up to about a 15% reduction in fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by modelyear 2018. Within each truck category, more specific targets are laid out based on the design and purpose of the vehicle; for example, a semi-truck with a low roof vs. one with a high roof. Fuel-efficiency gains will be charted for each year and for each vehicle category and type.

Although it is yet far from certain, it appears very possible a new API oil-service category—one that would supplant the current CJ-4 category— will be developed and put in place to address changes that likely will be made to medium- and heavy-duty diesel engines by the time the rules kick in. “The industry is currently working its way through the API [oil-classification] process outlined in API 1509 with regard to evaluating the need to develop a new API service category to address the greenhouse gas/mpg regulations that have recently been put in place,” advises Jeff Torkelson, Ph.D., technical manager-commercial & industrial lubricants, Valvoline New Product Development Labs. “The group working on this is called the New Category Evaluation Team, or NCET, and is made up of representatives from the Engine Manufacturers Assn. (EMA), API and the American Chemistry Council (ACC),” he continues. “Their recommendation will be taken forward to the Diesel Engine Oil Advisory Panel [of the American Society of Testing & Materials (ASTM)] and ultimately API. The formation of NCET is the first step in the process of developing a new category. EMA has asked for a new category of engine oil—now known as PC-11 (for Proposed Category 11)—to be available for first license on Jan. 1, 2016.” Heading up API’s PC-11 NCET is Dan Arcy, OEM technical manager for Shell Lubricants. He explains that the team consists of three member representatives each from API, EMA and oil additive suppliers as well as testing-lab representatives.

American Trucker/December 2011 25

cover story Future heavy-duty diesel motor oils may be lowviscosity products to help ensure the highest mpg possible.

Each time an NCET is formed, its charter is “to look at all information being presented by engine makers to see how developing and releasing a new API category would affect the marketplace, other existing API categories, and the environment. “The team must also consider the timing of the request, whether or not there are tests available [to prove it out], and is there sufficient data to support changes in engine design,” Arcy continues. When its work is done, the team makes a recommendation to the ASTM oil panel on whether to proceed with a new category or not.

THE APPROVAL PROCESS He adds that the team’s recommendation can be a definite “Yes” by consensus or it could be a “No,” but with reasons cited for the denial. At this point in time, Arcy notes, it is too soon to know when a decision will be reached, but “hopefully as soon as possible. There are many stakeholders who have commented on this and the team must take it all into account.” Valvoline’s Torkelson says that along with the impact of the new rules on motor oil, “PC-11 oil will also address concerns that have

been raised by EMA. These mainly have to do with newer engine designs already introduced or expected to be introduced into the market in the near future. “The main parameters that EMA is concerned with . . . are a more robust oxidation test, a more representative shear stability test, a better aeration test, and a test that incorporates a biodiesel compatibility aspect,” Torkelson adds. Not every major oil supplier agrees to the blanket assessment held by several formulators that future diesel motor oils will have to be of lowviscosity formulation to ensure the highest mpg performance possible. However, lower-viscosity oil appears to be on the table as the possibility of launching PC-11 is investigated. “We feel that an extensive industry-wide education program with active participation from members of EMA, API and ACC will be necessary to overcome likely misgivings from fleets and operators that will have a hard time accepting non-traditional heavy-duty viscosity grades such as 5W-30,” points out Torkelson. “The team set up to develop the new API category of oil will ensure that the testing necessary for PC-11 oils is robust—and the group will focus

heavily on durability for any lowerviscosity grade oils.” He notes that Valvoline is “actively field-testing lower-viscosity grade oils to understand durability concerns.” Torkelson adds that Valvoline is already “starting to hear a bit of communication from OEMs actively looking for higher mpg performance from current API CJ-4 oils.”

IMPACT OF LOW VISCOSITY With that development and with PC-11 in mind, he advises that “lower viscosity is the most significant property that will impact engine oil’s contribution to fuel efficiency. Valvoline has been conducting extensive studies . . . including numerous SAE J1321 fuel-efficiency tests, fleet testing and engine stand testing, and is at the forefront of understanding how formulation parameters can influence fuel efficiency. Other formulation options other than just lower viscosity can be used to influence fuel efficiency, but low viscosity is the major factor.” “Between 2014 and 2018, we know the rules will get stricter,” says Mark Betner, product manager-heavy-duty lubricants for Citgo. “We’re talking 20% more fuel efficient on a carbon dioxide per ton mile basis [of mea-

surement]. That bogie has brought engine makers back into the discussion about motor oil. “As truck OEMs look at everything ahead of the new GHG and mpg rules taking effect, why wouldn’t energy-efficient lubricant formulations be considered?” He says the only caveat that will matter is that the contribution of the oil to improving truck miles per gallon will have to be cost-effective overall. According to Betner, it pretty much goes without saying that the industry will have to look at lowerviscosity oils, but it will have to do so “holistically” by factoring in all aspects of their performance, including drain intervals.

FUEL-EFFICIENCY BENEFITS

“If all these factors come together,” he advises, “it’s realistically possible a new oil-service category could be introduced by 2016 that could include fuel-efficiency benefits.” Betner cautions, however, that API categories aside, before there will be widespread acceptance of low-viscosity oils by fleet owners, the supplier community will have to work to overcome what he calls the ‘viscosity-fear syndrome’ held by many truck operators: the unfounded concern that viscosity grades lower than 15W-40 will not provide the same degree of engine protection. Jim Gambill, manager of direct marketing for Chevron Lubricants, says it’s a “known fact” that lowering viscosity will increase fuel efficiency, noting that some suppliers claim as much as a 2% increase for a Class 8 rig. Chevron, though, is more conservative. “We put the fuel-efficiency improvement with a 10W-30 oil vs. a 15W-40 at 1% for a Class 8. That’s with durability maintained and allowing for OEM-approved oil-drain intervals.” He says that “with midsize trucks and their 6L to 8L engines, the proof is deeper as their rpms are higher and

Go to

they typically idle more. For these trucks, there are claims of a 4 to 5% improvement in mpg that we agree with as well.” Gambill points out that lower-viscosity oil still has a way to go to gain wide acceptance from fleets as 15W40 oil accounts for 93% of the oil sold in the trucking market. “There is some speculation on our part that whether or not the next oil category will be driven by fuel efficiency or durability or both, our customers have said they clearly want both,” he continues. “To achieve this, we may have to look at all the lubricant and fluid links in the chain to attain the sort of mpg improvement that may be sought to meet the potential new rules.” Indeed, according to Gambill, when Chevron looked at what could be done to boost fuel efficiency on off-road equipment, it found that making changes in hydraulic oil alone could boost mpg by 8%. “We’ll continue to look at places [to make improvements] where we had not before, but we also must always balance the risks to operators against the rewards they may attain.” When it comes to customers, he adds, “we have noted that the average age of trucks has climbed with many now 10 to 15 years old. We have to

think about these operators as well. They may be doing fine with fuel efficiency, but engine durability is their big issue.”

MAKING THE SWITCH

Shell’s Arcy says fleets can switch from a 15W-40 to a lower-viscosity oil anywhere in North America “with no problems at all”—but they should check first with their engine maker on their specific guidelines. “There can be a 1 to 2% mpg gain from moving from a 15W-40 to a lower-viscosity oil,” he states. “There’s a definite fuel savings when comparing apples to apples without compromising oil performance, including engine durability and drain capability. But actual savings will vary by application, by truck and by engine, and by the model year of the engine as well.” Chevron’s Gambill advises that the key thing to keep in mind in all these discussions is that “oil must be formulated properly for the given situation—the truck and its application. Fuel economy is important to everybody, but oil’s main role remains ensuring engine durability. “When you think about it,” he adds, “the number-one way to be green is to make things last as long as you can.” AT

Slotting in the shop time needed to address relatively small items such as oil filters on a fleet’s maintenance schedule can be tricky, but failure to do so can result in costly downtime in the field. Leading oil filter companies say that costs remain the customer’s top concern, from extending drain intervals to increasing life expectancy. At Puradyn Filter Technologies, customers also want to know how they can reduce their maintenance cost and increase life to overhaul, says COO Kevin Kroger. “The Puradyn bypass oil filtration system helps to safely extend the oil drain interval by removing solids to below 1 micron,” he says, adding that independent tests validated a 70% efficiency rate at less than 1 micron. “It works in conjunction with the engine’s full flow filter. With tighter tolerances in new diesel engines, particulate removal below 1 micron keeps the engine continuously clean, reducing engine wear and keeping engine tolerances in check for longer periods.” The Puradyn system removes any water or gaseous contaminants through the system’s evaporation process while “base additives consumed in combustion are continuously replaced through our patented slow-release additive package incorporated within our replacement filter element,” Kroger explains.

Cost remains only one concern for truckers

ENGINE PROTECTION

“Our customers are looking for highly engineered oil filters that protect their biggest physical investment—the engines in their trucks,” says Mike Harvey, brand manager for Wix Filters. “In this economy especially, they are also looking to save money and minimize downtime.” With those goals in mind, Harvey detailed a new oil filter technology Wix introduced this year called ecoLast. “During close to 2 million test miles, this new technology more than doubled oil-drain intervals,” he says. “Doubling the length of oil-drain intervals can save fleets about $100 to $200 per vehicle annually when compared to oil changes using standard oil filters.” The system uses less oil and fewer filters, which equates to lower maintenance costs, adds Harvey, esti-

mating that a fleet of 2,000 trucks could save a quarter of a million dollars annually with the technology. “Wix’s ecoLast oil filters are a direct replacement with no changes or modification required to the vehicle, meaning ecoLast can be easily and safely adopted by any fleet,” Harvey points out.

EMISSIONS IMPACT

Emissions regulations have changed what fleets require of their engine oils, says David Cline, product manager-oil filtration systems for Parker Racor, and that has changed the requirements of oil filters. The chemicals required to treat exhaust in modern engines is ending up in the lube oil, Cline maintains, resulting in the “crankcase becoming the trash can for soot particles, fuel dilution and oxidative by-products such as varnish and sludge. The standard cellulose spin-on oil filter will no longer give the life, contaminant capacity or performance required by the FOR MORE INFORMATION, latest oil-operated VISIT THESE WEB SITES: components such as injectors and BALDWIN FILTERS www.baldwinfilter.com turbochargers,” he says. lose, synthetic, and glass-blown media to find solutions for customers and packaging it “in a system or a module providing efficiency and capacity … at an economical price.” “Testing is performed to ISO and SAE standards as well as some internal Parker Racor test procedures tailored to smoking out the things that standard testing cannot find,” Cline says. “Second to the media development is the packaging. Today’s engine compartments are reduced into smaller frames for many different reasons. Engine-mounted components such as the oil filter lose real estate by taking second fiddle to emissions-related devices such as an EGR cooler, second turbocharger, or a crankcase ventilation device.”

EXTENDED DRAINS

Fleets are also looking for filters that extend drains in a cost-efficient manner. “Customers are asking for high-quality, high-performance oil, fuel, air, hydraulic and coolant filters that are

designed to specifically protect their engines, all at a fair price. It is very important that the correct filter design be used on the engine to ensure optimum engine protection. Our design philosophy is simple: Meet or exceed the OEM specification,” says Steve Englund, senior product management administrator for Baldwin Filters. “In many cases, the Baldwin customer is able to utilize our filters for extended drain intervals, which helps them to reduce operating costs over time.” Baldwin is a “vertical manufacturer,” meaning it manufactures nearly every component used in its filters. This helps it meet customer needs while also continuing the investment needed to advance the quality of its products, England explains. “Baldwin Filters is constantly investing time and money into new product development as well as existing product improvement,” says Englund. “Our engineering team utilizes an in-house, state-of-the-art laboratory that includes the capability to test our product designs under many conditions.”

THE 2011 GRAND CHAMPION Bill Warner Jr. Bill Warner Jr. Trucking Circleville, WV

t’s not easy for American TruckerÕs editorial staff to pick a single truck from all the sweet iron chronicled in our Readers’ Rigs section and declare it the “best of the best” for the year. But sometimes a vehicle just seems to stand forth as the winner right from the moment we lay eyes upon it. Such is the case with Bill Warner Jr.’s fully restored 1989 Ford Aeromax LTL 9000.

I

Bill Warner Jr. spent five years restoring this Ford Aeromax to like-new condition for a simple reason: He started his trucking career behind the wheel of one.

Warner set out to restore this particular Ford to what he calls “brand new on the dealer lot” condition for a simple yet unsurprising reason: Both he and his father started their trucking careers behind the wheel of Aeromax models, and although Warner freely admits that Peterbilts are his favorite, he remains deeply attached to Ford’s long-since vanished tractors. “My dad started out driving Fords, and I got a brand new one in 1988 myself,” Warner explained. “We must’ve had 15 or 20 of them over the years.” Tose Aeromax models were everywhere back then, he said. In a strange twist of fate, the 1989 Aeromax LTL tractor Warner restored is the very same truck he glimpsed back in the 1980s hauling fuel in and around the Manassas, VA, area, a place Warner and his dad operated their Aeromax dump trucks during the week before returning to tiny

Circleville—a stone’s throw from Seneca Rocks, WV, which is now home to Warner’s repair shop. Warner began restoring trucks in the early 1990s and started looking for, in his words, “hard-to-find” models at “pride and polish” shows. Today, his fleet of 20 trucks includes a beautiful Kenworth K100 cabover and Peterbilt Model 359 long nose tractor, yet he still hankered to find a Ford he could bring back to life. As luck would have it, five years ago he found this particular Aeromax not

far from where he lives, and he set about restoring it with his son Cody, then all of nine years old. As parts are almost impossible to find for the Aeromax, he ended up crafing some of his own, such as the front bumper and plastic “cradle” for the sleeper. He also made a few “minor” modifications, such as stretching the frame out an extra 52 in. (giving the truck a 276-in. wheelbase), installing modern air-ride seats, and shifing the fuel tanks to install steps. All in all, though, Warner achieved his goal with his Aeromax restoration as the truck now looks like it indeed just rolled off a dealer’s lot—despite having over 590,000 mi. Equipped with a Caterpillar 425hp. engine and 15-spd. manual Eaton Fuller transmission with overdrive, Warner’s Aeromax sports hand-crank windows, AM radio, even cloth carpeting for the cab floor and doors. Warner’s only regret, though, is that his father passed away before he finished work on the truck. “He would have absolutely loved it,” he said.
