Shrinking supply
I
Th supply of low-mileage used trucks favored by retail buyers is evaporating fa t; as a result, prices are starting to climb significantly for the first time in y s—a trend that may continue for a while, according to Steve Clough, president & CEO of Arrow Truck Sales. “There’s a used-truck shortage coming and we think supply is going to be tight for three or four years,” he explained during a presentation at FTR Associates’ 2010 Transportation Conference The used-truck held in Indianapolis back in September. I got a chance to sit down with market is definitely Clough at FTR’s meeting and talk about what’s going on in the used-truck mara seller’s market ket in more detail. And from what he sees, those selling used trucks are going to be sitting pretty, while buyers are going to find it far tougher. Clough said the reason used-truck supply will tighten is pretty simple: Newtruck production dropped to record-low levels during the recession, and fleets that typically bought new trucks went into the used market to buy large groups of trucks—usually in lots of 100 power units or more. Those buying patterns rapidly worked off the large overhang of used equipment that built up during the recession, he said. He pointed out that new-truck production slipped from 133,000 units in 2008 to 95,000 units in 2009 and is expected to finish out 2010 at only around 110,000 units—not enough to restock the used-truck market significantly. In sum, it’s going to be a seller’s market for a while when it comes to used trucks, with good deals for buyers perhaps few and far between. We’ll see how it all plays out in the months ahead. AT

The next generation of trailer tracking
Q
ualcomm Inc. has unveiled Trailer Tracks 210 (TT210), which it calls the “next generation in trailer tracking,” as it offers “more memory and processing power, embedded solar power, Bluetooth, and a more compact design.” According to the company, the TT210 solution delivers timely information about load status and location of trailers with enhanced features that improve the return on investment for fleets incorporating trailer tracking into their operations. TT210 is slated for commercial availability in the first quarter of 2011. TT210 is the successor to the Trailer Tracks 200 (TT200) untethered trailer management solution. Both TT210 and TT200 leverage the same Trailer Tracks host environment, so customers using either or both platforms will benefit from future host development and are able to manage their trailer assets from a single web portal, Qualcomm noted. Qualcomm has also announced that StarTrak Systems will offer its ReeferTrak to Qualcomm custom-

There is also an alert to indicate inadvertent lane departures and weaving within lanes. According to the company, monitoring can allow fleets to train drivers to stay in compliance with CSA 2010 safety rules. Distracted drivers, whether due to fatigue, cell phone usage, or other circumstances, will generally weave within a lane far more than a rested driver whose full attention is on the driving task, the company said. www.safetrak.takata.com

ouble Coin Holdings has received SmartWay verification on its FR605 steer-position tire. The FR605 is part of Double Coin’s fuel-efficient tire lineup, which consists of a series of tires including the FT105 trailer position tire verified by SmartWay in March, as well as the FD405 drive position tire verified in June. Double Coin said each tire was developed and is manufactured with advanced tread compounds and highly developed internal construction to provide lower rolling resistance and longer mileage. The FR605 features a five-rib tread design, extensive siping, and side shoulder decoupling grooves to further enhance even wear and traction. Currently, Double Coin said it is “actively working towards reducing the rolling-resistance values on all branded tires to meet potential future government regulations.” As a result, Double Coin said it plans to add additional products to the EPA Smartway list of verified technologies based on market demand and end-user requirements. All of the SmartWay-verified Double Coin tires will be on display at the ATA Management Conference show this month and at SEMA in November. www.doublecoin-us.com

GVAmerica has come out in support of the EPA proposal to streamline the process for certifying natural gas vehicle aftermarket conversions as “one of the most important steps government can take to expand the use of non-petroleum fuels.” The organization has supported the existing requirements, but contended that they are unduly restrictive when it comes to aftermarket conversions. “We commend EPA for recognizing that its regulations as currently written are not a good fit for aftermarket conversions,” said Jeff Clarke, general counsel and director of regulatory affairs for NGVAmerica, in an oral statement made during a hearing on the agency’s proposed rule changes. In supporting the proposed rule changes, Clarke made the following recommendations: ◗ Warranty. EPA should unequivocally state that converting a vehicle does not void the original manufacturer’s warranty. ◗ Certification fees. The EPA should allow aftermarket manufacturers to pay the certification fees at the end of each quarter or annually based on the total number of vehicles sold. ◗ Vehicles two years or older. The agency should specifically state that manufacturers can seek both a Certificate of Conformity for the new vehicle and approval for converting this vehicle after two years. ◗ Bench testing for heavy-duty vehicles. The requirement to use bench testing for heavy-duty vehicles is too restrictive and manufacturers should be able to use chassis testing that has been approved by EPA. This would help lower the costs of complying with the regulations. Legislation proposed last year is still waiting for action by Congress.

A two-way street
Used-truck salespeople and customers have mutual goals
B
uying or selling used trucks has to be one of the toughest jobs in trucking. It is a complicated business, no matter where you stand, with far too many variables for most folks to deal with. So what makes a master used-truck salesperson and what makes a master customer? If you are both a used-truck seller and a buyer, you might want to take a look at both sides of the board. Unlike chess, this game correctly played always has two winners. For starters, used-truck salespeople have to be experts on a wide variety of equipment makes and models, and the inventory mix changes constantly. Since the equipment is used, age and vehicle condition are two more complicating factors, as are the specs for any given truck. It makes knowing the standard features and options for a new truck seem, well easy. “Used-truck salespeople have to know a lot more about a lot of things, more models, more specs,” says Ernie Bendele, vice president of used-truck sales for the Peterbilt dealership network, Rush Enterprises, and a veteran truck salesperson. “If you are selling used equipment, it is a matter of expertise and experience. For example, you have to be able to appraise a truck and see what you have to do to repair it and what that will cost [before you can accept a truck in trade or price a truck for resale].” “You have to work harder to demonstrate ROI with used equipment,” says Kevin Hollaway, used-truck manager for the CIT Group in Illinois, which handles Kenworth, Volvo
Being a good salesperson means knowing about many different makes and models. and Isuzu trucks at most of its six central Illinois locations. “You have to work harder to earn someone’s business. For instance, most used trucks are out of warranty, so you have to be familiar with the various warranty packages available. Used-truck purchases are not usually planned purchases. They tend to occur in a short amount of time for a particular reason, such as the growth of the business, a need for better fuel economy, a fleet or shipper asking the carrier to upgrade to meet equipment performance expectations, etc. You have to be prepared to respond to that.” Used-truck customers themselves add extra layers of complexity. They may not know what their truck purchase options are in terms of suitability for their application, desirable features or cost. Good used-truck salespeople have to uncover those

parameters and qualify the potential buyer before even beginning to make recommendations. “A good salesperson has to be articulate, know the inventory on hand, know how to move someone to a like piece of equipment [if their first idea is not available or appropriate], be very knowledgeable, be a good listener and have a good memory, or take good notes,” says Hollaway. “You really have to be dedicated to the business because trucking is not a 40-hour-a-week job. People come back because they trust you. At CIT, we are known for doing the right thing, going the extra mile, earning the business, being fair. At the end of the day, a used truck is still a used truck and it has issues and creates issues. You gain more respect when you are honest and help people deal with those issues.”
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
“A person buying a preowned truck does not want somebody else’s junk,” Bendele agrees. “He is probably buying used because he may not run many miles or because he can’t afford the payments on a new truck, but he still needs something dependable that will get the job done. “People like me who have been in the business for a long time have a good repeat customer base. We’ve built up relationships and trust. People come back to a salesperson because they feel comfortable doing business with them,” he continues. “They like to work with someone who has gone out of his way to earn the business. “Used-truck customers are looking for someone who knows the product, is clearly working for the customer, understands his wants and needs, and understands and can help with financing,” Bendele says. “Truckers always have hard times— and these have been especially hard times. Some customers need a little guidance and they appreciate it.” Becoming a master used-truck salesperson takes time, so it is no wonder that many businesses have some sort of sales training program to try to give their salespeople a head start. Sixty-year-old Arrow Truck Sales Inc., for example, knows a lot about the used-truck business. In recent years, the company has been working to teach all its sales specialists how to do a professional, consultative job selling used equipment through its Master Sales Specialist competition. This summer, Arrow held the final round of its VNL Master Sales Specialist competition at its headquarters in Kansas City. Judges evaluated each finalist’s 15-min.

“walk-around” presentation of the features, advantages and benefits of a used Volvo VNL 780. Solid product knowledge, a professional and smooth presentation, and the ability to involve and engage the customer are key elements of the competition. For the Arrow sales specialists, this means being able to discuss a vehicle’s safety features; aerodynamic benefits; engine, transmission and drivetrain; serviceability; and comfort and convenience features as well as Arrow’s ready-to-work vehicle refurbishing and warranty programs. Like the company’s involvement in the creation of the Used Truck Assn. (which now numbers some 800 members), the Master Sales Specialist competition is all about professionalism and focusing on the customer. “For Arrow to be successful, we have to have customers and they have to be successful customers,” says company president & CEO Steve Clough.
Being a master used-truck customer is also a skill all its own, and used-truck salespeople are the first to acknowledge and value it. “We always appreciate it when a good buyer comes in,” says Bendele. “A good used-truck buyer has a stable business, an operating plan and access to the credit he needs. “Good buyers also know what they are doing and why. They are looking for a truck that is good and sound,” he adds. “They are often interested in a warranty, too, because they want that support when the truck is out there on the road.” “Good used-truck customers have solid business sense,” says Hollaway. “They are ‘hands-on’ in every way. They trust us and know that we want them to be successful. Selling used trucks is not a one-way street. It takes mutual respect. You have to regard one another as valued business partners.” —WENDY LEAVITT

Onboard recorder adds to vehicle safety
A
new black box data recording system has been added to the product line of T3 Motion. The MotionTrak 300 Series can capture video footage, GPS location, vehicle speed and g-force shocks in the moments immediately before and after an accident. GPS capability is integrated with Google Maps to track precise location. The system’s small cameras can be mounted discreetly to record video footage from any viewpoint. Software enables the user to see video footage from the vehicle’s perspective, overhead Google Earth location display, and numeric as well as graphical data on a single screen. The video footage can be searched frame by frame for detailed analysis.
The MotionTrak 300 can assist fleets in a number of different ways. PC-based viewing software and data sharing make export quick and easy. It can also help fleets optimize routes, encourage safe and efficient driving habits, assist in accident investigation, decrease fuel consumption, and even reduce insurance costs, the company said. www.t3motion.com

Used-truck sales climb at Arrow
U
sed-truck sales are up 60% year over year at Arrow Truck Sales, according to an announcement made, appropriately, on the company’s 60th anniversary. Credit applications are also up some 27%, while delinquencies are down. Inventory is also decreasing, Arrow’s president and CEO Steve Clough said during the anniversary celebration at the company’s Kansas City, MO, headquarters. “We are getting close to ‘normalized’ levels,” he said. Used trucks are at historically low values, according to Clough. In fact, they are lower now than they were in 2002. Back then, a model-year 1999 Class 8 truck with a medium-sized sleeper sold for about $35,000. In 2009, a model-year 2006 Class 8 truck with a medium-sized sleeper was retailing at about $30,000. Sales will continue to improve, “barring any catastrophe,” he said, and inventory will continue to decline. Clough noted that the inventory of used trucks three to four years from now will be “very low” because of the dramatically reduced build rate for new trucks during the recession. New-truck buyers usually like to trade in trucks on a three- to four-year cycle, he said, but since so few trucks were built and purchased in the last three years, there won’t be many to trade. Exports also took a lot of used equipment out of the domestic market, explained Clough, especially in 2007, but exports are now down substantially, and 2007 model-year trucks with particulate filters won’t last long in many of the export markets without modification. “We try to discipline ourselves not to sell trucks where there is no infrastructure to support and service a particular vehicle,” said Russ Tedder, senior vice president, truck remarketing for Arrow. —WENDY LEAVITT

as finally dawned on me that there are no limits to man stupidity, which means there is a bright future the legal profession. For example, consider the foling warning found on a chainsaw: “Do not attempt to stop the blade with your hand.” Is it there because a lawyer thought some idiot would actually try to stop the blade of a chainsaw, or is it there because someone actually lost a hand? love to use Proper training on Lawyers the words “failure warn” because wheel assembly to it’s impossible to asanyone has a remains vital sume reasonable sense of intelligence. For this reason alone, I believe tires and wheels are accidents waiting to happen. The incredible amount of pressure inside an inflated truck tire is more than enough to cause a serious or fatal injury in the event of a rupture, while the combined weight of a loose assembly on the highway will devastate anything in its path. Our federal government recognized the risks decades ago and passed a law (29 CFR 1910.177) under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to protect employees and motorists from these dangers. While that legislation has been in place since the late 1970s, it still amazes me that professional tire and transportation people have no idea it even exists. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the risks associated with truck tires and wheels is the fact that most of the “experts” tasked with the maintenance and service of the assemblies are not qualified because they have never been trained. There are basic steps that must be followed every time a tire or wheel is serviced, so the lack of proper training is prime real estate for a plaintiff ’s attorney

trying to build a negligence case around the failure to perform a recognized part of the process. Likewise, it’s ultimately the responsibility of the driver to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate, yet few of them know the difference between a torque wrench and a breaker bar. I’ve watched countless companies get dragged into lawsuits that had nothing to do with their failure to do anything. The fact that they were remotely associated with the events leading up to the accident was sufficient to name them as an additional defendant. And once they are under that microscope, every detail of the operation is scrutinized. If a wheel becomes loose and damages property or causes personal injury, the company that owns the vehicle must be prepared to defend the installation and maintenance practices for that assembly as well as remaining assemblies. And when outside vendors are responsible for that type of work, each of them can be put under the microscope as well. Accidents happen, so every measure put in place to prevent accidents must be communicated to everyone in order for those measures to be followed. If one maintenance facility or vendor is taking shortcuts or failing to follow the recommended service or maintenance practices, then the entire organization is exposed. If one driver looks the other way when a technician grossly overtorques the lug nuts and fails to notify the appropriate person to have it corrected, the entire organization is exposed. If one retreader allows a marginal casing to slip through production, the entire organization is exposed. Once you are under oath to tell the whole truth, you will always be asked what you did to prevent the accident. If the answer is “nothing,” then get out the checkbook. AT

Automatic tire inflation
S
Sa nd cost-conscious fleets have always kept a w ye on tires, but with the advent of CSA 2010, F going to be doing the same. It is no surprise, t that more fleets than ever are considering automatic tire inflation systems to help them measure up to the CSA Maintenance BASIC, with its high-penalty emphasis on tire safety. “When it comes to CSA, we are here to help,” says Al Cohn, director of new market development and engineering support for Pressure Systems International (PSI), which provides the Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS). “Fleets are penalized under CSA for flat, underinflated and damaged tires. “The payback can be less than one year,” says Cohn. “Fleets will immediately see a significant reduction in roadside, tire-related service calls, for instance. That is the biggest benefit that shows up right away.” Meritor’s Tire Inflation System by PSI is available with ThermAlert, a system designed to detect when air is escaping from the axle’s thermal plug and out through the hubcap tee vent, which occurs if a wheel end is operating at an abnormally high temperature. The MTIS indicator light comes on to alert drivers to find a safe place to bring the tractor and trailer to a stop.
Systems will help with CSA compliance
AUTOMATIC AIR ADJUSTMENT Hendrickson International recently introduced a new feature to TireMaax, its tire inflation system. The TireMaax Pro, which will be available in the first quarter of 2011, is designed to automatically inflate and deflate tires as needed using air from the trailer’s air reservoir. The ability to deflate tires is important, according to Matt Wilson, controls business unit manager for Hendrickson. “Being able to deflate tires enables the TireMaax Pro to respond to ambient air temperature changes, which can increase or decrease tire pressure,” he says. “It also allows you to balance tire pressures across all tire locations to reduce scrubbing and improve wear.” Wilson says that Hendrickson also recently made the decision to discontinue the TireMaax EC in favor of the mechanically controlled TireMaax CP. “The TireMaax CP is very popular with fleets,” he says. “It is simple to operate

and easy to maintain, particularly on trailers.” The Spicer Tire Pressure Control System from Dana Corp. is designed to operate in two modes (loaded and unloaded), and in three terrain settings (highway, offhighway and emergency). According to the company, the combination provides six pressure settings to help fleets operate effectively across a wide variety of conditions. In May of this year, FleetAir acquired the PressureGuard system from Bearing Technologies. Jeff Therber, co-owner of FleetAir with industry pioneer Clyde Stech, says the company has developed and tested a tire inflation system for drive axles. “We have the technology tested and ready to work,” says Therber. “We are just determining how to best bring it to market. We are also about to begin installing a tire deflation option for the PressureGuard system.” The inflation system from Airgo Systems uses the most cubic feet of air volume in the tire inflation industry, according to the company, which means that it can put more air into a tire to accommodate for larger air leaks.

State of mind
Avoiding problems with CSA 2010 requires changing your thought process on maintenance, training programs
B
eing a business owner in the trucking industry takes a particular mind-set that’s different from most other small-business operators. One of the biggest challenges facing owners in this industry is the large number of regulations. And now with CSA 2010 coming online in the next couple of months, it is going to be much more difficult to run on the darker side of that ‘regulation gray line’ we all tend to push up against. This probably will result in you operating your business differently than you have before. Instead of thinking of ways to skate around the regulations and constraints to avoid detection, you now need to understand how these regulations and constraints can work in your favor. According to the FMCSA CSA 2010 website, “CSA 2010 re-engineers the existing enforcement and

WHAT’S INVOLVED? This new CSA 2010 operational model has three major components: ◗ Measurement: CSA 2010 measures safety performance in new ways, using inspection and crash results to identify carriers whose behaviors could reasonably be assumed will increase crash liklihood. ◗ Evaluation: CSA 2010 helps FMCSA and its state partners correct high-risk behavior by con-

tacting more carriers and drivers. Interventions are tailored to their specific safety problem, as well as a new safety fitness determination methodology. ◗ Intervention: CSA 2010 covers the full spectrum of safety issues— from how data is collected, evaluated, and shared to how enforcement officials can intervene most effectively and efficiently to improve safety on our roads. This new enforcement system will make it much more difficult for a carrier or any of its drivers to slip through this new safety net. Both carriers and drivers must now be more aware of each aspect of their operation covered under CSA 2010. Let’s look at the positive side of CSA 2010. The main focus of this program is to go after the worst offenders. If you run compliant and within the boundaries established

Losing weight
Switching to lighter vehicle components has its advantages BY BRIAN STRAIGHT, MANAGING EDITOR
D
o more and do it more efficiently. That has become a major goal of truckers across the country in the last few years, particularly for smaller operators trying to weather the recession. The first part of that statement, do more, is as simple as it sounds. Truckers have been looking for ways to make their trucks more productive. As for efficiency? That could take you down a number of roads, from better routing to improved fuel economy. To accomplish either task, though, takes a concerted effort to find the right answers and execute a plan. For many fleets, some of those answers are the result of taking weight out of their trucks. Sounds simple, right? It is if you are buying a new truck. Spec’ing the right components at the time of purchase can make a big difference. A lighter truck means more payload capacity and a better mpg figure. If you run 1,000 trucks, a 0.1 mpg improvement can add up to big bucks over the course of the year.
NO ONE SOLUTION
If you’re a small fleet operation, or even an owner-operator with just a single truck, that dabbles only in the used-truck market, modern technology may be a few years away for you. But what if you need more payload capacity now? Or want better fuel mileage and can’t afford to purchase a new truck? The answer, it seems, depends on who you speak with. “It depends strictly on the financial payback,” says Bryan Martin, president of Joplin, MO-based 4 State Trucks. “[For long haul] I’m going to say it’s maybe not worth it.” 4 State, which is home to the Chrome Shop Mafia, perhaps best known for its participation in the popular show “Trick My Truck,”

specializes in aftermarket add-ons. Martin pointed out that truckers could see 500 lbs. or more of weight savings under some scenarios, but that the benefits are limited unless you get paid to haul bulk commodities, such as those in dump or liquid product applications. Because most tractor-trailers cube out before they weigh out, any benefits due to weight savings generally apply only to mpg. And if you own only a few trucks, that savings might not provide enough return on investment to install lighter-weight components. “Just by weight savings, I’d say fuel gains are minimal,” Martin says. “Now, if you switch to widebase tires, there is a dual benefit of the weight savings and improved fuel efficiency. “I get a lot of people who wish their trucks were lighter, but what we get at 4 State Trucks is a lot of conversation,” he adds. “If you want the [bigger] sleepers, you’re going to have to deal with the extra 500 or so lbs.” Martin advises truckers to start simple: clean out their trucks. “The biggest weight savings I see is to just clean that doggone thing out,” he says. Look for items not needed in the truck like extra tool boxes, and “ask yourself, do I really need this? That can save you 200 or 300 lbs.,” Martin says.
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
For those operators who want to cut the weight on their vehicles, there are some options out there. “Going to wide-base super single wheels ... that’s probably the best bang for the buck,” Martin says. Wide-base wheels and tires could potentially save a tractor-trailer unit over 1,000 lbs., according to Kevin Lowery, director of corporate communications for Alcoa and a member of the communications committee of the Aluminum Assn.’s Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG). “The biggest opportunity is on the wheel front,” Lowery says. “Converting from steel to aluminum wheels can result in a significant amount of weight savings.” Lowery estimates that you could save between 600 and 1,200 lbs. on a tractor by switching to aluminum wheels as compared to steel options. That savings can grow if dual assemblies are converted to wide-base wheels.
ADVANTAGES OF ALUMINUM
The LvL One aluminum wheel from Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products can save up to 650 lbs. over a tractor-trailer with steel wheels, the company says. The LvL One is 2 lbs. lighter than Alcoa’s previous aluminum offering, proving that even aluminum can get lighter. Each wheel is 30 lbs. lighter than a typical 24.5x8.25-in. steel wheel and still boasts a 7,850-lb. rating. Alcoa also offers an online calculator to show the fuel savings and/or payload increase available with its aluminum wheel options. The CalcuLighter allows for the input of variables, including fleet size, to calculate the savings of converting wheels to aluminum. It will also provide a return-on-investment calculation, Lowery says. Accuride Corp. offers aluminum options under its Duplex line. Forged from a single piece of alumi-

cover story num, the lighter weight offers the chance for increased payload and fuel savings, the company says. Aluminum wheels also offer additional benefits, including lower maintenance and operating costs. Duplex wheels offer load ratings up to 12,300 lbs. and are available for steer, drive, and trailer axles in widths of 12.25 or 13 in. For those truckers who wish to switch to wide-base tires, aluminum wheels can cost you. To combat that higher cost, Hayes Lemmerz offers a wide-base steel wheel for tubeless dual replacement applications that it says is less expensive than aluminum models, yet offers a 166 lb. per axle savings over competitive steel wheels.
A COMPLETE PACKAGE
Lowery says that converting to aluminum wheels offers benefits regardless of the product being hauled. “It doesn’t matter what you are hauling,” he says. “It matters what you haul and how much you traditionally weigh. It’s very beneficial to everybody.” If the decision is made to switch to a wide-base wheel, then there is also savings gained in the use of a wide base tire Michelin Americas

meet the criteria. Michelin’s X One line of widebase tires can save a tractor-trailer close to 1,400 lbs. when combined with aluminum wheels, according to the company. When switching from a truck with aluminum wheels and dual tires, the saving is as much as 716 lbs. That grows to 1,346 lbs. when a tractor-trailer unit is switching from dual tires on steel wheels to X One tires on aluminum wheels, according to Michelin. The company also claims a fuel savings and provides an online calculator to estimate the savings according to individual truck(s) specs. BBTS offers its Greatec M825 wide-base drive radial and the Greatec R125 wide-base trailer radial. Chris Hoffman, manager-TBR & retread product marketing, says the company’s M825 wide-base tires weigh less than the dual assemblies they replace. “These fleets may be able to convert weight saved into extra revenueproducing payload,” he says. “We recommend fleets also consider switching to Greatec R125 widebase trailer radials for all-around weight-saving advantages.” Beyond tires and wheels, weight gains can be seen in other areas
Go to
In addition to improving fuel efficiency, using wide-base tires can reduce weight. area where aluminum replacement parts can be used. Anytime a component needs to be replaced, it is advisable to look for a lighter weight alternative. Hoods, bumpers, trailer doors, lift axles, and suspensions are all areas where lighter-weight components are available.
HOOKING UP TO WEIGHT LOSS
Fifth wheels are another area where savings can be had. For example, Fontaine Fifth Wheel claims its Ultra LT is the lightest slider system on the market today. The company says the system weighs within 3 lbs. of competitive aluminum models while offering the strength of steel. With a 50,000-lb. vertical load and 150,000-lb. drawbar pull rating, the fifth wheel is said to offer 100 lbs. or more of savings over competitive products. SAF-Holland is also expanding into aluminum fifth wheels. “Time used to be that fleets weren’t interested in saving weight unless it totaled 100 lbs. or more,” explains Mike Ginocchio, vice presidentproduct planning for fifth wheels. “Now, even savings of fewer than 100 lbs. are a big deal, especially in light of the weight increases due to

cover story the addition of emissions con technology.” According to SAF-Hollan saving just 75 or 100 lbs. can translate into an extra 16 gals. of liquid a tanker can carry per trip. “Over [the course of] a year, you could make one extra delivery per tanker with just that weight savings—and that revenue adds up,” says Ginocchio.
ance costs, improved durability nd higher resale value.
EVERY POUND MATTERS
IRON SUPPLEMENT
Jost International has chosen another path to savings. Using iron top plate, Jost has been able to slice 40 lbs. off its fifth wheels. And that’s just the beginning. “You also have to remember that the top plate of the fifth wheel is only half the equation; there’s the slider assembly, mounting brackets, etc.,” Rich Carroll, vice presidentsales and marketing, says. “You can save up to 100 lbs. by making design changes to the component assemblies around the fifth wheel if you look at the big picture.” If you have a slider system, 4 State’s Martin suggests considering a switch. “If you have a slider, you can go to one that is either fixed or a shorter slide.” Many people believe that shifting to a smaller fuel tank, particularly if you run shorter routes yet purchased a truck that was previously used in over-the-road applications, is a good option. That smaller tank might seem like a savings, but Martin says to beware of that. “Even smaller fuel tanks may not be worth it because you want to take advantage of cheap fuels,” he says, adding that shorting your truck several gallons of fuel at a lower price might eventually offset any savings as you “replace” those gallons at a higher price elsewhere. Going lighter, of course, offers the opportunity for more payload. But
Switching to aluminum wheels can add up to big weight savings for fleets. it also improves the fuel efficiency of the vehicle, and that is why many companies today are considering lighter-weight components. The increasing use of highstrength aluminum has seen 30 consecutive years of growth in commercial vehicles worldwide, ATG reports. The organization says aluminum has many other benefits besides allowing for more payload capacity. Among those are improved fuel economy, reduced emissions associated with greenhouse gases, lower mainte-

For every ton of aluminum added to a fleet, there is the potential to save 37 tons of CO2 over the life of the vehicle, ATG claims; however, few small operators are adding a ton of aluminum. Fortunately, the benefits come with ach pound that replaces a steel omponent on the truck. According o ATG, 18 lbs. of CO2 is saved for ach pound of aluminum used. If a fleet is able to reduce the weight of Class 8 tractor-trailers by one ton, ATG says it will see an annual fuel savings of 588 gals. For every 4 lbs. in weight reduction, ATG says the fleet could see a 2-3% reduction in fuel consumption. Whether it’s tires or wheels, fifth wheels or bumpers, there is weight to be saved. That much is clear. What is not so clear is whether you should embark on this path. Many companies now offer online calculators to help in making the final decision. In the end, though, only the individual knows whether the cost is worth it. AT

MUNICIPAL
Building variety A county fleet includes everything from golf carts to front loaders
L
L mos County is the smallest co y far in New Mexico, coverin 109 sq. mi. But it’s a mountainous region known for its physical beauty and home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which makes it a growing community with fairly high density for the West. It’s been named to a number of “Best Places to Live” lists, and according to the 2000 U.S. Census has one of the largest number of PhDs per capita and the fourth highest median household income in the country. And that means it has a large, active municipal fleet operation providing the kinds of services such a high-profile community requires. When you manage a municipal fleet, you find yourself responsible for lawn mowers and front loaders and everything in between that moves on wheels and has a motor. With a fleet of 540 vehicles, that’s a perfect description of the Los Alamos County municipal operation. “We provide preventive maintenance, repairs, towing, fueling and acquisition services for a very diverse fleet,” says Marina Wells, the fleet division manager. Besides lawn mowers and golf carts, the county operation provides trucks for refuse collection, landfill operations, road repairs, parks maintenance, utility
service and emergency response. While the golf carts have their own dedicated shop and maintenance technician, everything else is handled by eight technicians at the county’s central shop facility. “Our technicians are pretty skilled,” says Wells. “They put their hands on just about any kind of vehicle you can think of.” A NEW CHALLENGE One of the more unusual “things” the techs will need to accommodate is the state’s first hydraulic diesel hybrid refuse truck, which just went into residential service in September. A Peterbilt Model 320 Hybrid with an Eaton HLA system and side loader body, it captures braking energy as compressed hydraulic fluid and uses that stored energy for launch assist and acceleration, making it perfect for stop-and-go applications. “We just put it into service, so we’re really in a training and testing phase, but the driver feedback is good and it’s been running smoothly with no issues,” says Wells. “If it goes well, we’re planning on ordering two more—one more side loader and a front loader.” Fortunately, the county has little trouble recruiting capable, qualified

techs, both from other local entities and the private sector. “Our pay is significantly better than most,” says Wells, who herself has an impressive history in fleet management. “Right out of college, I went to work at the [Los Alamos National] Labs, where they assigned me to rebuild their fleet operation,” she says. Five years later, the lab fleet was recognized by the Dept. of Energy for its excellence. Wells then moved to New Mexico’s Dept. of Transportation, where she was responsible for analyzing management data for 5,000 vehicles before taking her current job. From a management standpoint, Wells is focused on implementation of a fleet management software system. Fleet Focus, a web-based hosted system from Asset Works, captures real-time shop labor as well as tracking maintenance and repairs. “We charge back our municipal ‘customers’ and we want to be sure they’re getting full value for the services billed,” says Wells. “As a supervisor, now I can monitor productivity and repair status in real-time from my computer. In the near future, we’ll open that monitoring to our customers as well, so they can check on the status of repairs and vehicle availability.”
