In a lot of ways, we’ve entered a new age for trailers—though it’s a transi ion that’s taking place almost soundlessly, with little if any hoopla. “Over the past decade, OEMs have built more bulletproof trailers, ones capable of longer-than-expected lifecycles,” Steve Tam, vice president-commercial vehicle sector at ACT Research Co., told me. “The mismatch is that the trailer’s box lasts longer than the chassis,” he explained. “Some fleets, such as Fleets are looking Wal-Mart, are looking at whether it would be more cost-effective to for ways to get more refurbish older trailers versus buying new units. With their scale, that life out of trailers could be the cheaper option.” Tam stressed that this refurbishment strategy has been a success for Class 8 trucks, with OEMs and independent firms becoming quite adept over the years taking used Class 8 sleeper tractors and turning them into day cab models. “This strategy is now coming to the trailer market,” he noted. Rob Fortney, general sales manager for Wabash National, added that some fleets are switching back to older-style trailer specs to not only extend life expectancy but lower maintenance costs as well. “We continue to see larger truckload dry freight carriers return to mechanical or spring suspensions,” he said. “While there is an initial cost advantage, there is also a saving in terms of alignments, springs and shocks.” These are just a few of the trends that trailer manufacturers are deploying to meet ever-changing customer needs. The tool’s slide ram design is used to drive a heat-treated punch into the valve stem seat to pop it out of the rim after the wheel has been demounted. The tool includes a rubber safetygrip drive handle and a vibrationabsorbing rubber grip on the outer tube. Pinching is prevented by a protective flange at the top of the tube. The role supply plays on rates

I

n the world of freight, hauling rates are almost always set by the law of supply and demand. It’s the truck-toload ratio that determines the rates, along with the urgency of the shipper to get that load to its destination. When there are more trucks than loads available in an area, the rate will be low; the opposite is true when tonnage outpaces truck availability. For success, you need to develop a truck-to-load saturation plan that’s in your favor in the majority of locations at which your trucks pick up and deliver. That means you need more loads than available trucks. There will always be carriers who underbid your rate to a customer (unless the government gets back into the rate-setting business). So remember, be careful what you wish for. A better bet for a carrier would be to learn the break-even points on each piece of equipment operated and what’s needed to sustain and grow. This becomes the carrier’s hauling rate range. Then when the carrier hauls freight, completing a lane or run, those revenue needs will be met. A carrier without a hauling rate range based on the break-even point and capital needs puts itself at the mercy of the brokers and shippers. It becomes a financial accident waiting to happen. oftware-as-a-Service (SaaS) has emerged as a cost-effective option to obtain software packages for many businesses in the past few years. Now, according to one expert, there may be an even better financial option on the scene. “An alternative to conventional SaaS is On Demand Software, a product that offers a similar enterprise solution that can be hosted or installed locally or externally, but without a capital-intensive purchase up front,” said Gene Gander, vice president-business development for CargoWise. “This enterprise solution provides the same degree of service, but the application fees are based solely on the actual number of users and the amount of service access, which can vary from month to month.” Offering many of the same benefits as an SaaS solution, On Demand Software affords clients the financial flexibility going forward that would not otherwise be possible with a traditional software model, he explains. “The client does not have to have an impossible cognitive vision of what future business requirements will be over a given period of time,” said Gander. “Traditional capitalized purchases place an immense burden on a company trying to avoid overbuying or underbuying.” According to Gander, On Demand Software models offer a number of benefits, including the ability to purchase the exact amount of functionality needed; quicker deployment of the software and the ability to add modules quickly and as needed; reduced IT resource maintenance; and the ability to ramp up or scale down functionality as needed. “The On Demand Software model can add efficiency and cost savings for both the vendor and customer,” Gander said. www.cargowise.com

Devices are not a cure-all

I

not often that I take a stand on something, because everyday job precludes me from saying anything too troversial. But I’m seeing more and more devices beg used to identify potential wheel-off incidents. Some of these particular devices are now evolving into some interesting concepts on the original theme. Since I’m not sure how to accurately describe the entire category, I’m going to start by referring to the colArrows give ored plastic arrows that warn a driver fleets a false and/or maintenance person when a lug sense of security nut has “backed off.” As I see it, the concept of the arrow is that when a nut and stud lose all of their tension, centrifugal force will cause the nut to become loose. If all of the plastic arrows are aligned in the same direction immediately following installation, then any loose nuts will be easy to find because the “points” will not line up with the other arrows. It sounds so simple and obvious that you would think every truck should have them. The fact is, the arrows cannot identify a nut and stud that has lost tension to the point where it cannot support the weight of the vehicle and its cargo even though it still appears to be tight. Nor can the arrows identify a substandard wheel stud that is incapable of producing sufficient clamp load with the correct amount of torque. And if the nuts and studs have been overtorqued (as many have been), those little colored arrows will all point in the same direction like soldiers in formation. I personally believe that most commercial wheel and rim fasteners are overtorqued, however, I don’t have any data to support this. Since the “tighter is better” mentality appears to be at least a decade away from changing, I es-

Go to

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

timate there are literally millions of studs that are either approaching or passed the yield point where permanent damage has occurred. These fasteners can be difficult to spot because they are stretched to the point where they are unable to maintain sufficient bolt tension after installation but are still intact. Checking the torque after a few miles might identify a fatigued stud, but it’s unlikely that the little colored arrow will ever move. Like the misdirected and irresponsible marketing approaches to nitrogen inflation that suggest a tire need not be checked after being inflated with (almost) pure nitrogen, the little colored arrows can give the same sense of false security. And like the legitimate benefits of nitrogen inflation, I must acknowledge that you will find an occasional lug nut that begins to loosen and back off (if the driver bothers to check). But in the real world, little plastic arrows are not going to prevent wheel-offs any more than nitrogen inflation will prevent roadside tire debris. Both may help people sleep better at night, but neither can account for all of the factors that lead to loose wheels and failed tires. The only way to prevent a wheel-off is to properly install the components with the correct amount of torque and then check the torque at periodic intervals. If the little plastic arrows are incorporated into a quality wheel torque program, then there’s no harm in some additional protection. But if fleets are going to rely on those arrows to identify a potential wheel-off without taking any steps to ensure they were installed correctly in the first place, then I know a guy with a line on some dashboard hula girls that can spot an unbalanced tire just by the way they shake. have to be an industry old-timer to remember detection systems meant mirrors—rearview wasn’t that long ago. Today, there are many ct detection systems from which to choose, based on many different technologies—from camera systems to sonar, radar, sensor and infrared solutions. The industry has also begun moving beyond thinking in terms of free-standing, add-on systems to sophisticated, integrated vehicle-based safety systems, or IVBSS. In November 2005, the U.S. DOT and a private consortium led by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) began a multi-year project to develop an integrated vehicle-based warning system. The system is intended to provide forward crash warnings; lateral drift warnings when a driver may be inadvertently drifting into an adjacent lane; and merge warnings for unsafe lateral maneuvers. Cornering speed warnings are also part of the program. They are designed to warn drivers when they are going into a curve too fast and are in danger of losing control of the vehicle.

New products offer more control, safety

ON THE MARKET As work continues to perfect fully integrated vehiclebased safety systems, developers of solutions to address one or more object detection needs have not been idle either. The line-up of products available to fleets today has never been broader, more technologically sophisticated or feature-rich. Here are some of the object detection/collision avoidance systems available now: ASA Electronics: Offers the Voyager line of rearview monitors designed to enhance visibility for drivers during backing and lane-change maneuvers. Various monitors, including those with up to quad-screen capability, accept input from two, three or four vehicle-mounted cameras. Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems: Offers the radar-based Bendix Wingman ACB, Active Cruise with Braking system, which is integrated on the vehicle with the Bendix Electronic Stability Program. It is designed to maintain the preset cruise control speed, but also is set to maintain a safe following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead by dethrottling the engine,

progressively applying the engine retarder and then applying the foundation brakes. Flir Systems Inc.: Provides the trucking and rail industries with the PathFind IR thermal imaging night vision system that “sees” heat to help drivers spot pedestrians and animals in or near the roadway at night in time to react. Intec Video Systems: A pioneer in onboard cameras for object detection, Intec offers Car Vision brand rear and side vision video camera systems for a wide variety of truck applications, as well as integrated radar systems that constantly scan for obstacles and provide a visual and audio alert when something is detected. Iteris: Designs and builds the AutoVue lane departure warning system and a broad suite of vision- and radarbased active safety products, including a forward collision warning system. Meritor Wabco: Offers the OnGuard collision safety system and the SmartTrac stability control system, which can be electronically activated in the event of a safety problem or an abnormal event. business of trucking

trailer is the key piece of equipment behind the business of your trucking company. In other words, the trailer is what generates your revenue. What goes into the trailer, plus the distance it needs to move, is what a carrier needs to know to identify the revenue its trailers will generate. You can have the best trucker in the world driving the finest equipment on the road, but if the truck isn’t loaded to its full potential with quality, paying freight, the other things really don’t matter.

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

Skilled load planning is important in keeping that trailer full. Load density is the art of dispatching, which keeps the truck full whenever it’s rolling. It’s well documented that over 40% of all over-the-road trucks traveling American highways are partially or completely empty. This indicates efficiency isn’t really part of the plan for most carriers. Load density should be a major part of a dispatcher’s overall plan, regardless of size.

The trick here is to develop niches in the specific locations that offer the best freight rates. Find out who is shipping from those locations and who is currently hauling that freight. It is imperative you know and understand your entire market. Imagine a target with the bull’s eye in the middle. You must focus your attention on all the areas of that target, and learn about every bit of tonnage that comes in and out of those areas. This bull’s eye becomes your “freight lane.” If you only have one or two trucks, even a small freight lane

can provide more tonnage than you will ever need; however, you must do your homework. Always focus on your bull’s eye. When you schedule your outbound load, you should book a return load as well. The farther out you can schedule loads, the more revenue you will generate and the more efficient your operation will become. This planning doesn’t mean just knowing what you’re going to be doing tomorrow or for your next load. It’s a strategy for the future. Arrange as many preplanned, prerouted loads as you can with your shipping customers well in advance. This will make it easier to determine your costs and your projected revenue, and to be able to fill the gaps that invariably are going to occur. Creating a specific freight lane for each tractor-trailer unit or straight truck will provide you with flexibility when load plans are changed or canceled. Murphy’s Law says if a truck is going to break down or the load plan is going to fall apart, it will happen at the most inconvenient time and place geographically and financially. Always be ready for the unexpected with a backup plan. Spotlight deadheading and unnecessary sitting, and then focus your energies on eliminating these revenue destroyers. Shipping experts are now starting to advise companies to contract with different trucking operations of all sizes to ensure their loads are covered. The days of the exclusive hauling contract are coming to an end. Shippers are anticipating rate increases, as available loads increase and the number of drivers remains stagnant or starts sliding downward. With this happening, there has never been a greater opportunity for quality, service-minded trucking com-

More and more shippers are using additional carriers to protect against rising freight rates. This presents an opportunity for small trucking companies. panies and owner-operators to earn the revenue necessary to be truly profitable. Every mile a truck is driven costs money, whether loaded or not. Once a load is delivered, you only need to be concerned with the miles ahead and the time it takes to reach the destination of your next delivery. If a carrier doesn’t cover those empty miles or sitting costs, the results can be a financial hit that could jeopardize the future of the company. You must develop freight lanes to be successful as a small carrier. The unchanging nature of a planned freight lane (not dedicated freight from a single customer, but multiple loads from multiple sources) creates consistent revenue that can be supplemented by use of the spot freight market when preplanned loads fall apart. Finally, and most importantly, the advantage of a multi-leg freight lane is that you aren’t required to beat your break-even point on every leg of the trip. Some trips must be used to position your equipment in an

area where you realize better paying freight. The trick is to ensure that the good paying freight covers the loss associated with the positioning leg. If you do that, then any revenue you earn on the positioning legs can go straight to your bottom line and become profit. That trailer is your ticket to success if you correctly manage what is placed into it. Spend your time developing specific, multi-leg freight lanes for each trailer or straight truck you operate, focusing on the total distance and time they are loaded. In the final analysis, correct management of the loads on your trailers is the key to your success. If you take full advantage of all available freight within a freight lane, the results will have a positive effect on your bottom line. With proper care and maintenance, trailers are seeing more useful life

t’s no secret that trailers take a tremendous amount of punishment in terms of the brutal pounding they take, not just in day-to-day operation, but from prolonged exposure to corrosive ice and snow-removal chemicals. Faced with such stark realities, it’s no wonder that fleets would turn over their trailers after only a few years. And those used trailers weren’t viewed as much of a bargain by the market, either. Now, however, that’s all changing, fueled in no small part by dramatic economic shifts within trucking. For starters, the long emissions-reduction journey over the past decade significantly boosted both the price and weight of all diesel-powered trucks. For example, the first round of emissions regulations in 2002 added between $1,800 to $3,000 to the base cost of a new Class 8 truck. In 2007, an extra $5,000 to $10,000 got tacked on to sticker prices, followed by another $6,700 to $10,000 extra this year to meet the final round of emissions mandates.

BULKING UP Trucks are also significantly beefier now, too, bulking up by some 1,500 to 1,700 lbs. on average between 2007 and 2010 alone, notes Craig Bennett, senior vice president-sales and marketing for Utility Trailer Manufacturing. “As a result, fleets are looking for ways to reduce trailer tare weight, improve fuel economy benefits, make them more repairable, and last longer—all to generate cost savings for their bottom line,” he says. “Trailer design evolution is actively ongoing, but this evolution is largely in small-step increments

with relatively few major, single design change introductions,” stresses David Pickup, manager of product engineering development for Wabash National. Typically, he notes, trailer buyers tend to be somewhat conservative when it comes time to make purchase decisions and thus demonstrate a greater willingness to accept smaller incremental changes. “There is, however, an active demand for both unit weight reduction and increased floor loading capacity,” Pickup says. “These requirements are and will continue to be a driver [for] the use of newer, higher strength materials, together with associated changes in design to ensure their optimal use. We’ll also see increasing demand, driven by both legislative and environmental reasons, for the greater incorporation of aerodynamic devices into the trailer structure rather than as afterthe-fact add-ons.” Demand for used trailers, both dry van and refrigerated units, has also picked up over the past six months, especially for later model equipment, reports Kevin Nomina, Wabash’s used-trailer fleet manager. “We are also starting to see pricing rebound as well for the first time in nearly two years,” he says. “Supply is an issue. Customers seem to be keeping their equipment longer as trailers are being built of more durable material and lasting longer. Customers are not replacing their equipment as quickly as they once did.” With all of this in mind, fleets continue to look for ways to save over the long haul with their trailers, not only in terms of reducing tare weight to gain extra payload capacity and improve fuel efficiency

when empty, but to generate more productive life out of them. “Big customers are looking for weight savings first and foremost,” explains Hank Prochazka, vice president-sales and marketing for Fontaine Trailers. “Their power equipment has steadily gotten heavier with APUs [auxiliary power units] and new emissions standards, while their customers [the shippers] are trying to reduce costs by shipping more tonnage with every load. [The fleet] mind-set remains in the commodity purchasing mode [i.e., low price] until they examine what new technology can do for them.”

GETTING LIGHTER Prochazka adds that fleets today do not have to give up durability to run with lighter trailer equipment, but the up-front purchase cost is higher. That being said, he stresses that some fleets are gaining business with shippers by running lighter trailers that let them offer heavier payloads. “Designs will continue to evolve toward lighter tare weights, corrosion resistance, easier and less expensive maintenance requirements,” adds Stuart James, vice president-sales for Hyundai Translead. “Certainly, fuel economy is always on fleet operators’ minds, [as] fuel is a massive cost element for them that they never ignore. Low-rolling resistance tires seem to be an effective response at virtually no added cost.” Fontaine’s Prochazka notes that even flatbed carriers are investigating new component options to improve fuel economy. “Many have even moved to tire inflation systems to improve fuel economy and reduce tire wear. Fleets are also considering wide-

cover story base tires for fuel economy and weight savings, and we have noticed an increase in the flatbed demand for these tires,” though poor tire life caused by trailer flex and tire scrub is an issue when using wide-base models on traditional flatbed designs, he says. “Some fleets tell us they see improved fuel efficiency with them, while others report the exact opposite,” notes Hyundai’s James. “One fleet even mentioned different results in different parts of the country. That’s why wide-base tires still have a way to go before they can challenge the good old dual tire as the standard.”

THE AERODYNAMIC EFFECT

“While CARB [California Air Resources Board] regulations have forced fleets to investigate the use of aerodynamic devices to meet minimum requirements for transport in and out of California, some fleets are finding that the fuel saving is quantifiable and as a result have shown increased interest in the technologies to lower their operating costs,” notes Jim Brown, director of business development for the DuraPlate trailer products

Wabash notes that fleets are looking for trailers with fewer maintenance requirements. group of Wabash National. “Durability, cost and ease of maintenance remain key factors in the success of these devices.” Durability of the trailer as a whole is another big stress factor for customers these days, says Hyundai’s James, relating to both toughness and longevity. “What we are seeing is a requirement that the trailer must be in good condition when it reaches the point that they flush it from the fleet. In terms of battling corrosion, that is not as easy as it sounds,” he points out. “Motor carriers started favoring air ride trailer suspensions be-

cause they helped reduce damage to cargo while enhancing ‘empty ride’ for drivers,” says Steve Zaborowski, senior vice president-operations for Xtra Lease. “But we’ve been finding that air ride suspensions are more susceptible to damage when trailers are shipped via rail in intermodal operations.” Spring-ride suspensions are also easier to maintain, he adds, so in select applications, Xtra Lease is spec’ing more of them. “Now, don’t get me wrong; air ride suspensions are still very, very important in trailer operations,” Zaborowski stresses. “In certain applications, however, like intermodal, spring ride models are more durable.”

CUTTING MAINTENANCE

Additionally, trailer makers say customers continue to embrace lowmaintenance items related to wheel ends, tire inflation systems and electrical systems, says Rob Fortney, general sales manager of Wabash, adding to the reasoning behind this ongoing shift to mechanical or spring trailer suspensions. “We continue to see larger truckload dry freight carriers return to spring suspensions,” he says. “While there is an initial cost advantage, there is also a saving in terms of alignments, springs and shocks. Mechanical suspensions are also less

prone to damage due to tire failure or road debris and are less troublesome for intermodal applications.” Greater durability is also the reason Xtra Lease is favoring composite trailers versus more traditional “sheet-and-post” designs. “Sheetand-post trailers are designed with plywood liners and they can puncture pretty easily when hit with a forklift. And more punctures mean more repair work and downtime,” Zaborowski says. “Composite trailers, on the other hand, use galvanized steel, which makes them fairly puncture-resistant,” he says. “We even add in an extra scuff liner to further protect the cargo envelope, making it more durable.” Durability again influenced a spec’ing change two years ago, this time to help strengthen the trailer’s floor. “We’ve added extra cross members to give the floor more strength and boost the payload capacity of our 53-ft. trailers,” explains Zaborowski.

ADDED STRENGTH

“Instead of cross members on 12-in. centers, we now have them on 10-in. centers, shrinking to 8 in. over the last 4 ft. of the trailer by the door, where forklifts enter and exit,” he notes. “That has also boosted trailer payload capacity to the 24,000-28,000 lb. range versus 16,000-20,000 lbs.” Landing gear is now equipped with automatic lubrication systems to make it maintenance-free for the initial five years of a trailer life. Additionally, most of Xtra Lease’s undercarriages are built with galvanized steel and coated with a variety of paints to help better resist corrosion. This is also true for trailer brake shoes, which Xtra Lease now buys with special liners to help resist what’s called “rust jacking.” “The magnesium chloride and other chemicals they use to clear ice

Hyundai Translead says customers are focused on durability of trailers more than ever before.

and snow off the road can get into the brakes and cause the brake shoes to crack,” Zaborowski says. “It’s not a safety issue because we’d catch something like that during inspections when trailers enter and leave our yards. But it leads to shorter product life, costing us time and money to replace. By getting shoes with shields on them, we avoid that cost for us and our customers.” “Customers today, both fleets and private carriers, are concerned with value as it relates to initial investment cost,” says Wabash’s Fortney. “Corrosion resistance of both the under frame and the rear frame have certainly become a key factor for many customers,” he says. “That’s why we offer a hot-dipped galvanized rear frame and underride guard, as well as a full stainless steel offering. We are also working with a number of our suppliers to expand the number of other components we can offer with galvanizing, such as cross members, bogies, and support gear bracing.” Toughness also applies to trailer interiors, and work continues apace in this area. Great Dane Trailers, for example, continues to enhance its ThermoGuard liner material for refrigerated trailers as a way to lower lifecycle costs and extend ownership

periods for fleets. These efforts help shrink the impact of trailers on the bottom line. Introduced nearly five years ago, ThermoGuard includes a metallic layer that retards “outgassing” from foam insulation. Deterioration of the reefer trailer insulation is held in check longer, extending the usable life of a reefer trailer while reducing operational costs over that period, says Chris Hammond IV, vice president-dealer sales and operations for Great Dane.

COOL SAVINGS

“If you don’t lose your insulating ability, your trailer will last longer and the reefer unit won’t have to work as hard to maintain desired temperatures,” he explains. “That also means you won’t have to change the reefer unit’s oil as often and less fuel will be used as well.” As initial investment costs continue to climb for trailers, customers prefer to keep trailers in service for longer periods of time, says Wabash’s Fortney. “Improved floor systems and materials, as well as floor capacities, are of increasing interest,” he notes. Whether it’s aerodynamics, fuel savings or longevity, the modern trailer is certainly being reborn. AT

FIELD SERVICE

Always on call Utility faces challenges as it readies fleet for field work

W

ople depend on you ervice like electric s need immediate access to their trucks when emergencies strike. And when your service area covers 8,100 sq. mi. of mostly rural territory, your fleet is by necessity operating out of numerous district offices, and you have no central motor pool with spare trucks if one is out of service for any reason. The largest customer-owned power co-op in the country, Pedernales Electric Cooperative is headquartered 50 mi. west of Austin, TX, in Johnson City and has a fleet of some 350 trucks to provide field service. “We’re spread out all over central Texas,” says Jim Petty, the company’s fleet supervisor. With those vehicles domiciled at nine widely dispersed district offices, keeping every vehicle on the road and ready for any emergency “is our biggest challenge and has been for years,” he says. “We have to be prepared to make repairs and get it back on the road quickly so crews aren’t standing around waiting for a truck.” Not only is the fleet spread out, but a full one-third of the vehicles carry complicated hydraulic systems that require careful maintenance. While

Jim Petty (l), fleet supervisor for Pedernales, accepts the keys from Rick Hendricks of Kenworth of South Texas.

the co-op has a large number of vans and pickups in its fleet, the workhorses of its operation are 75 ‘bucket trucks’ and another 45 derrick trucks. “The equipment on them is more valuable than the chassis, and the maintenance is double that of just an ordinary truck,” says Petty.

LIFECYCLE COSTS

Further complicating the fleetreadiness requirement is the 10- to 15-year lifecycle of those Class 6 to 8 vehicles, a lifecycle that will include 3,000 to 5,000 hrs. of engine idle time to run the hydraulics for the extendable bucket and derrick booms. The solution for Pedernales is heavy reliance on contract maintenance, especially for chassis maintenance. “We do a large percentage of the hydraulics work, but only about 10% on the truck chassis,” Petty says. Most of the contract work is handled by manufacturers of the aerial equipment, who often sub out the chassis work to dealerships. “We’re a co-op owned by our customers, so we have to bid out everything and don’t have an established dealer network,” Petty explains. Having the equipment manufac-

turers bid on the entire vehicle maintenance contract works well. “It not only saves us time, but it gives us better price potential [on the subcontracted chassis maintenance work] and makes it easier to manage.” Like a number of other progressive utility companies around the country, Pedernales is also interested in diesel/electric hybrids. Earlier this year, it took delivery of a Kenworth T370 hybrid fitted with an aerial boom and bucket to begin testing the new technology in its service fleet. “We already had 10 hybrid sedans, but think it might be a good fit” for the service fleet, Petty says. The high idle time of those trucks is reduced substantially with the hybrid system since the hydraulic system can run off stored battery power and the engine only needs to run to charge the batteries when they run down. Not only does the fleet save thousands of dollars on fuel and maintenance costs, but “the crews love it,” according to Petty. With a standard truck at a work site, the diesel is running constantly, producing both noise and exhaust gas. “The hybrid just hums,” he says. “The crews love the quiet operation and the lack of exhaust.”
