Lights and CSA
W
Who could’ve imagined the trouble the simple, humble tail light would cause truck operators within the context of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program. Case in point: Mark Blackford, national fleet manager for light maker Grote, noted in a white paper pubOne light being lished late last year that lighting infractions are not only causing CSA violations out can trigger directly, they offer what he dubbed an opportunity to conduct more detailed bigger problems vehicle inspections. Not counting headlights, lighting accounted for 647,125 inspections, resulting in 865,304 violations, Blackford said. By comparison, Grote found that over the same time period, the six CSA brake categories yielded just 497,849 inspections and associated CSA points. The company also discerned that the number of violations is 1.7 times the number of inspections. This indicates that when an inspection is conducted for one possible issue, in 7 out of 10 cases, that can result in further violations being ticketed. “Lighting infractions are by far the easiest problems to spot,” Blackford said. “Once the rig is pulled over, the procedure is to check the entire trailer and cab for any other infractions.” Something to keep in mind the next time you choose to run with even just one light out. Program open to fleets of all sizes G oodyear Tire & Rubber has opened up its Smart Fleet program to owner-operators and small to midsized fleets. “The new Goodyear Smart Fleet program has been designed for customers who want ‘the best of the best’ and gives owner-operators through midsized fleets access to benefits that up until now were reserved for Goodyear national account fleets,” said Jose Martinez, business solutions manager, Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems. Owner-operators and fleets that join the program will enjoy access to premium Goodyear-branded truck tires and technologies, including Fuel Max technology and DuraSeal technology; online, published pricing on new tires, retreads and services all honored by participating authorized Goodyear commercial tire dealerships; and a 24/7 roadside service program offered through the Goodyear-FleetHQ suite of business solutions. The program includes customized tire performance and service activity reporting, as well as tools to help fleets lower their operating costs and improve their results. “All prices will be published at national account rates, which eliminates uncertainty around price,” said Martinez. “Smart Fleet members will receive the same pricing at any participating Goodyear commercial tire dealership nationwide, so there are no pricing surprises whether on the road or at home.” Smart Fleet members also will

Thinking ahead T
he new year is here, but have you started thinking about 2015 yet? You may be wondering why you should concern yourself and your small carrier with another year’s worth of planning. What’s so special about 2015? Well, that’s the year the Panama Canal expansion project is scheduled to be completed. For years, Houston, TX, has been planning to take over the “front door” for all Asian goods coming into this country—receiving container ships by the hundreds of thousands. If your carrier regularly routes trucks on (or crosses) the I-69 trade corridor from Mexico to Chicago, you’re going to be significantly impacted. Whether it’s dealing with more construction to carry the increased truck traffic or simple congestion, your travel time, dock times and log books will be impacted. Is your motor carrier prepared to deal with such an onslaught that may turn the heart of Texas into something that resembles California gridlock? It’s not too early to start planning alternate routes, team-driving solutions, or other innovations to make sure your trucks arrive safely at their destination. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Lightweight bumper
H
endrickson Bumper and Trim has released the Aero Clad lightweight, corrosionresistant bumper for the Coronado SD. The Aero Clad bumper offers a bright, mirrored finish and is over 150 lbs. lighter when compared to traditional steel bumpers, Hendrickson said. Aero Clad is made from a bi-metal material that bonds stainless steel and aluminum together at a molecular level. The result is a chrome-like finish that will not rust, peel or fade over time. In addition, the material maintains a higher yield strength despite its lighter weight. Coronado SD bumpers in Aero Clad are available through the Hendrickson All Makes program and can be purchased through Freightliner dealers. Aero Clad is of-

Web-based routing
T
rueTrack, Rand McNally’s webbased solution, allows fleet managers to control the in-cab routing experience and track a driver’s adherence to predefined routes. Powered by IntelliRoute, TrueTrack allows fleets to dictate when warnings or alerts are issued, and drivers are proactively advised (at a fleet-specified distance) of what is ahead, including posted speed limit changes, toll roads, sharp curves or steep declines. A company address book allows fleets to upload a spreadsheet of locations into TrueTrack and then have those locations downloaded into in-cab devices. These can then be organized by account or location.

On-the-go training
TrueTrack works in conjunction with Rand McNally’s suite of mobile fleet management solutions, the TND 760 and TPC 7600, and will be available via the Rand McNally Connect web portal, the company’s online command center for its mobile fleet management solutions. Also, fleet managers can control the type of route computed on the in-cab device. Route settings include restrictions for 53-ft. trailers, 48-ft. trailers, double, triple or straight truck configurations. Routing can be set to adhere to hazmat routes, avoid tolls or take the shortest or fastest route. www.randmcnally.com
ro-Tread driver training from Instructional Technologies is now available on smartphones and tablets in addition to computers and onboard devices. “Whether a fleet issues companyowned mobile devices or expects drivers to bring their own device, smartphones and tablets have been adopted faster than anyone could have guessed,” said Jim Voorhees, president and CEO of Instructional Technologies. “By letting drivers take lessons on mobile devices at a time that’s convenient to them, a fleet is spared the expense of classrooms, traveling, and non-driving hours for drivers.” Pro-Tread Mobile offers the company’s top 20 lessons, including CSA, hours of service, speed management, hazmat loading, and placarding. www.instructiontech.net

More than tires M
ichelin Americas Truck Tires has launched an expanded version of its ONCall emergency road service (ERS). Version 2.0 adds mechanical and towing services to its current tire service offering. With the new mechanical breakdown services, customers can receive coverage for roadside repair of lights, brakes, suspension work, jump starts, fuel delivery and lockouts. Diesel technicians are also available 24/7 to help identify potential issues and work with drivers to determine the most cost-effective solution. Michelin national accounts will also have access to a simplified billing process through centralized invoicing. Under the new towing service, Michelin will arrange transportation of a Class 5-8 truck to the customer’s location of choice. In the event of truck abandonment, ONCall 2.0 will provide secure storage and cleaning options. “Michelin’s emergency road service is now more than tires,” said Vic Koelsch, COO of Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “Michelin ONCall 2.0 brings fleets peace of mind by providing consistent service, event transparency, and accountability for all breakdowns. Every maintenance manager would like to be on site at every breakdown event to manage it properly. ONCall 2.0’s innovative tracking and reporting features allow the service manager to be there virtually and optimize vehicle uptime.” FixPix and LiveTrack are two other services that are designed to give fleet managers visibility of their remote assets. LiveTrack allows managers to fol-

Fleets can also access the event viewer for post-event reporting with case-specific details of mechanical, towing and tire service calls. FixPix provides photos of serviced tires and work orders, which can only be taken at the breakdown site. These can be viewed online. FixPix is intended to deliver an extra measure of trust and accountability to tire ERS, ensuring assets are managed correctly. This service is available at Michelin Commercial Service Network and other participating dealers. According to Koelsch, fleets do not have to be running Michelin tires to use these comprehensive breakdown services, “but we obviously would like them to use our tires, too.” For operations adding natural gas vehicles to their fleets, he also noted that no special provisions have been made at this point to deal with natural gas-powered trucks, but if there is a need for help with a natural gas vehicle, ONCall technicians will try to lend a hand or identify other sources for emergency support. www.michelintruck.com
Added levels of safety M
obileye has added a new “enhancement box” to its collision avoidance system that takes safety to a new level for drivers. The enhancement box can be used to automatically activate different functions of the vehicle when safety alerts are generated, such as turning on the hazard lights or turning off the radio. Three configurable outputs can be connected to different functions of the vehicle, providing fleet and safety managers the ability to tailor the system to their needs. For example, connecting the hazard lights to the enhancement box can cause them to be lit or to blink when a forward collision warning is activated. The box can also mute the radio and add haptic warning via a seat vibrator. www.mobileye.com

E Capital Fleet Services has reached an agreement with Amerit Fleet Solutions for contract vehicle maintenance services through GE’s TruckVantage fleet management service. Amerit will provide on-site and mobile maintenance. TruckVantage’s on-site maintenance program brings technicians into existing customer garages. Services offered include maintenance and repairs for trucks, trailers and material handling equipment, as well as parts inventory management and safety inspections. TruckVantage mobile maintenance allows GE customers to access Amerit’s Mobile Service Centers, which are fully customized “rolling garages” that can be deployed to serve fleet maintenance needs. Mobile maintenance allows clients to schedule repairs and preventive maintenance on-site at their facilities, eliminating the expense and downtime associated with transporting assets to other maintenance providers. “This agreement is an important element of GE Capital Fleet Services’ ability to offer a more comprehensive truck maintenance solution,” said Brad Hoffelt, senior vice president and general manager of products and services at GE Capital Fleet Services. “Through the Amerit on-site and mobile maintenance programs, customers can cut downtime, keep costs stable and predictable, and spend more time focusing on core operations.” “Combining Amerit’s proven success in deploying fleet maintenance service solutions anywhere in the U.S. with GE’s current TruckVantage program creates a unique, comprehensive approach to solving the challenges many of the fleets in the U.S. face today,” said Dan Williams, CEO of Amerit Fleet Solutions. www.gefleet.com

Roadside repairs
T
There is nothing more frustrating than being told that a simple puncture in the shoulder of a truck tire is not repairable. After all, the difference between the location of a repairable puncture and one that is not is often measured in millimeters. For decades, the only puncture repairs that were allowed in the field had to be located in the crown area, which the center of the Technology now istread approximately 1 to 1 1/2 in. from each allows roadside edge. Injuries outside crown area in the shoulder repairs the shoulder had to be referred to a full-service repair facility or a retread plant. One of the main reasons that standard puncture repair materials were not allowed in the shoulder area was the simple fact that the repair unit itself (or patch) would extend into the sidewall. If the edge of the repair unit or the edge of the reinforcing ply material in the repair unit was located in the high flex area of the sidewall, it’s not a matter of if it will fail but when it will fail. As a result, a significant number of tires were unnecessarily scrapped because the fleet did not want to wait or pay for a full section repair. The Tread Rubber and Tire Repair Materials Manufacturers Group (TRMG) is an organization that establishes recommended practices for the tire retreading and repairing industries. For the past few years, TRMG has been working on a document that would outline the industry guidelines for a “reinforced shoulder repair,” or RSR. At the recently held Global Tire Expo in Las Vegas, TRMG led a seminar based on the guidelines it approved the previous day—and during that hour in the Las Vegas Convention Center, it was
the start of a new era for the truck tire repair industry. The key to success for the RSR is the positioning of a larger and longer (but more expensive) repair unit. Standard puncture, or nail hole, repair units are the smallest of the repair materials because the primary purpose is to stop the air leak when the injury is in the crown area of the tread. There is very little flexing in that area, so adhesion is not a problem and the need for reinforcement is minimal. Unfortunately, the same materials cannot be used for an RSR. When a standard low-profile 22.5-in. truck tire travels one mile, it makes about 512 revolutions. This means each sidewall cable flexes 512 times in a mile or 51.2 million times during its first 100,000 mi. That’s a lot of flexing. The longer repair unit in the RSR makes sure the ends of the patch and the reinforcing ply material are anchored in a non-flex area. If the RSR is installed correctly, it will withstand the millions of flexing cycles it will experience during its lifetime. Commercial truck tire dealers and retreaders finally have a reliable and economical tool to repair small punctures in the shoulder area. For some fleets, the RSR will lower tire costs because the expense/time of a section repair becomes unnecessary. And while the RSR will probably cost a little more than a nail hole or puncture repair, it will keep a lot more tires in service and prevent some tire purchases on the road. Injuries in the sidewall and those larger than industry recommendations will remain section repairs so nothing changes in that regard. But the simple puncture in the shoulder can now be safely repaired in the field, and that’s great news for everyone in the tire and transportation industries. AT

TANK
Fluid approach Tank fleet is addressing multiple challenges
V
V ehicle weight has always been an issue for tanker operations like Venezia Bulk Transport Inc.; however, it’s even more of a concern today. “In some instances, we get paid by the gallon,” says J.P. Venezia, maintenance systems and food compliance manager. “With the latest emissions technology, our new vehicles are heavier, so we’ve had to change a number of specifications just to be able to maintain cargo weights.” Ten years ago, Venezia explains, a typical tractor in the company fleet had a full set of fairings, dual fuel tanks, and dual drive tire and wheel assemblies. Today, some of the latest models have no fairings, single fuel tanks, one less battery, stationary instead of sliding fifth wheels, and wide base single tires on aluminum wheels. “Reducing weight is a very big issue,” he states. “Otherwise, we’d be hauling less product per load, which impacts our bottom line and raises costs for customers.” Established in 1967, the Royersford, PA-based, family-owned Venezia operates liquid, dry bulk and specialty divisions from 12 terminals in six states. Its liquid tanker
fleet includes propane, insulated trailers for hauling liquid asphalt, and stainless steel and aluminum compartmented and single barrel units. Regardless of the load, effectively holding the line on fleet costs is a primary consideration at Venezia. “We try and domicile equipment so it is positioned to serve our customers, but that can also create challenges when it comes to managing information on equipment and maintenance operations,” Venezia says.
ELECTRONIC PATHWAY Until 2001, Venezia explains, that challenge was compounded by the use of a paper-based management process that required two full-time data entry clerks. The company had been using a TMW Systems enterprise management solution since 1999, so it began employing TMT Fleet Maintenance, TMW’s equipment and shop management software, in all of its facilities. Not only did this investment quickly pay for itself, it continues to generate direct and indirect savings. “Initially, we were able to reduce

our costs simply by implementing touchscreen data capture technology in our shops, which allows technicians to create repair orders and track labor time and parts usage,” Venezia reports. “We also saw parts inventory costs drop 10 to 15% by using centralized volume purchasing and automatic replenishment capabilities. In addition, there has been a 15-fold increase in warranty recovery from the ability to track covered items. “The data in the system generates savings by enabling us to effectively evaluate the cost-effectiveness of extended warranties based on past performance,” Venezia continues. “We also use the data to pinpoint the optimal lifecycle of equipment and determine when it would be most beneficial to replace vehicles.” Venezia is equally committed to safety. The company’s safety program has been developed to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations and includes quarterly safety meetings and product awareness training for all its employees, not just drivers. “A safe operation is organized, clean and efficient,” Venezia says. “If everyone strives to avoid accidents, we will be in a better position...to operate safely [and] improve the total performance of our company. “Every day, so that we offer the best possible service for our customers, we have to meet challenges that include fielding safe, reliable and productive equipment,” Venezia adds. “We do so by using our more than 45 years of knowledge and industry experience, and by employing dedicated people who are always ready to provide value through creative problem solving and continuous improvement.”

9stepsto avoididletime When freight slows, the time is right to take care of tasks that often get neglected BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR
I
n some ways, we all wish our business would be pedal to the metal all year long with more freight, more customers, and the resulting higher rates. In the real world of trucking, however, we deal with the ebb and flow of freight availability. There are times when the phones are ringing off the hook with calls from shippers needing their freight covered, but there are also times when the phone is silent and you have to scrape every known barrel to keep your trucks rolling with cash-flowing freight. You have many options on how to deal with slow periods. Parking your trucks or laying off drivers and office staff is one common solution. But what if you’d prefer not to lose quality people, even for a short time? Here are some suggestions on how to work through a slow freight period.
1. Perform maintenance and repairs A good time to bring in your road equipment, have it thoroughly inspected, and take care of every item requiring attention or repair is when freight is slow. When you’re rolling hard, a lot of the little annoyances are set aside for a “more convenient time.” Now is that time. The same can be said for your facilities, i.e., office, shop, parking area. This is the time to schedule maintenance and repairs. For example, those jarring potholes in the parking lot, the cracked window, even things like carpeting or painting, which entails emptying offices of furniture to
trucking industry is changing every day with new technologies and tools. Your employees should be aware of the constant flow of new rules and regulations. Not to mention, it’s also best to be proactive when it comes to safety training.
4. Brainstorm This is a great time to find out what ideas others have to improve the efficiency and profitability of your operation. Organize several different brainstorming and problemsolving sessions. Sessions should include both group meetings and one-on-one discussions with individual employees and contractors. Include mechanics, dispatchers and salespeople in the mix. It’s best to have the group brainstorming sessions in an off-site location, in a more creative environment that’ll literally force your people to think outside the box.
5. Meet with your best customers
2. Upgrade computer systems and software
Find out what their plans are for the future and how you can help them achieve the goals they’ve set for their company. Look for new ways to work together for the benefit of both operations. Don’t forget to include any freight brokers from which you regularly obtain freight and distribution center managers.
Again, the slow periods provide the opportunity to do the upgrades and then bring everyone up to speed on how to operate and use that new equipment and software.
6. Review your financials
do the job. Nothing invigorates an office staff more than fresh paint and new carpet.
3. Schedule training The time to bring on the education is when you don’t need to have a full staff running your operation. The

range and be sure it’s in line with your capitalization goals. Take the time to reflect on the past year and see how changes can position your carrier for success moving forward.
7. Review your business plan Any business, especially a trucking company, is never a static operation. What the initial plan was when you opened your doors reflects what the business should look like today. Certainly, adjustments had to be made along the way as conditions changed. It’s very important to go over your business plan, make changes to it that show how you’ve responded to challenges along the way, and then analyze your plan to see what else needs to change to reach your current and future goals.
8. Evaluate your marketing strategy How are you going to maintain your current customer and freight base and how are you going to grow it? What are the best methods to find customers who fit into the niche you’ve developed? Where will you get the biggest bang for your marketing dollar?
9. Review the freight lanes for each truck Don’t presume everything will remain as it is within each freight lane. It’s very important to have alternative freight sources set for when a load cancels or is delayed, or when a shipper suddenly stops using your company to haul their freight. Be a scout; be prepared.
All nine of these options have different levels of importance for each carrier. As the owner/manager of the operation, you need to prioritize which ones require immediate attention during a slow freight period. Keep in mind this is all about keeping you and your company ahead of your competition. Low freight periods used to your benefit by following through with these activities are what will prepare you for the challenges you and your team will face when freight picks up. Idle time can cause you and your staff to worry about that lack of freight. Instead, use that time to hone skills and ready your operation for the next rush of business. Each month, from February through October of this year, we will explore these nine steps in greater detail to help guide you through every activity and obtain the best results for your trucking operation. cover story
O
nce upon a time, the trucking industry moved in cyclical fashion, with swings in freight demand reflected through the upward ticks and nosedives of heavy-vehicle sales. While such boom and bust cycles created equal amounts of joy and desperation among carriers large and small, at the very least they were a fixture of the trucking landscape—dreaded at times, surely, but expected nonetheless.
Then came abnormal sales surges to avoid sticker price increases associated with emissions regulations promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The coup de grace, though, came with the Great Recession of 2007-2009, an economic calamity that came hard on the heels of a massive truck overbuy in 2006. Those two events completely upended the traditional buying patterns of the industry, convincing many to hold on to equipment and curbing fleet expansion efforts. This led to a flattening of truck sales that persists to this day.
THE GREAT UNKNOWN
“It’s been a stable environment for truck sales, but in many ways the industry has struggled with it because the industry is used to the swings,” explains Jonathan Starks, director of analysis for research firm FTR Transportation Intelligence. “No one is really used to this.” He adds that this flattening of sales is also a result of the sluggish economic climate that’s gripped the U.S. since the end of the Great Recession in 2009. “When is the last time in history we’ve seen the U.S. economy grow at an average of 2% for several years straight?” Starks asks. “Put another way, if the economy grows at 4% or more, you can clearly see what’s driving it. If the economy contracts
by 3% or more, you can see what’s driving it. But when growth hovers around 2%, that means there’s a mix of both positive and negative factors at work, and so it’s still hard to see any sustainable upward movement developing.” And that lack of sustainable upward movement has kept a firm lid on truck and trailer sales, he says, a situation FTR doesn’t expect will change anytime soon. Indeed, FTR projects that order rates for Class 8 trucks will reach just 243,000 units when 2013 numbers are finally tallied up, rising to 262,000 units this year and 275,000 units in 2015—not bad numbers but not great ones either. Order projections for trailers will follow a bumpier path, FTR believes, hitting 236,000 units when 2013 numbers are reported, rising to 237,000 units this year, and then falling back to 215,000 units in 2015. Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst at ACT Research Co., dubs the current economic climate the “Great OK,” where things are “too good to be sad and too bad to be happy.” While he believes there will be a gradual improvement in the U.S. economy this year, that improvement will be lackluster and the absence of what he calls economic vibrancy will keep truck buyers cautious as well. “It isn’t that there is uncertainty.
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
People are not really worried that everything will fall apart again,” Vieth observes. “[But] until we get stronger economic activity, we will continue to move more sideways than ahead. If we could get just a little more economic growth … that’s what we are waiting for.” Lana Batts, president of Driver iQ and a former president of the Truckload Carriers Assn., agrees, noting that fleets have to believe that the economy will continue to improve before they begin adding capacity. Therein, of course, lies perhaps the biggest wrinkle in the truck buying and selling landscape: Not only are there many old trucks still in operation—meaning fleets continue to delay buying new iron— when carriers do decide to buy, it’s only to replace current units not to expand their operations.
BEEN HERE BEFORE
“If you go back to 2003, there were 1.99 million Class 8 trucks in the U.S.,” explains Vieth. “In 2014, there were 1.99 million Class 8 trucks, exactly the same number—zero percent growth.” Still, Vieth points to a critical statistic: Back in 2003, there were 1.41 million trucks eight years old and younger. But as 2014 begins, there are 1.26 million trucks eight years old or younger, a decline in younger trucks of 12%. David Hames, general manager, marketing and strategy for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), notes that operating older trucks can create a double whammy for fleets. The first revolves around maintenance costs, he says, as trucks six to seven years old cost fleets about 16¢ to 17¢/mi. to maintain versus just 1¢ or 2¢/mi. for one-year-old trucks on average. “Older trucks also have a higher propensity for maintenance problems and that means a greater like-

cover story lihood of maintenance-related CSA [Compliance, Safety, Accountability] violations, so fleets get hit with higher costs of operation plus CSA issues,” he notes. For those reasons, Batts believes the tipping point age-wise for trucks still remains around five years old, and there’s no getting away from it if a fleet is running lots of miles. “It is pretty tough to have a truck that old if you run about 100,000 mi./year,” she notes. “[It’s] tough on the carrier.”

their older counterparts,” adds Tom Fansler, president of Vusion, which uses predictive analytics tools to help fleets accurately assess real fuel economy and other operating costs vehicle-by-vehicle, lane-by-lane. According to Fansler, Class 8 day cabs, for example, have seen a net improvement of 1 mpg between calendar year 2007 and 2013, with sleeper-cab tractors witnessing a 0.9 mpg improvement, although not all truck manufacturers are doing equally well. To put it another way, EPA 2007 trucks tended to get about 6.2 to 6.3 mpg, notes ACT’s Vieth. With trucks built in 2010 and later, it is fairly easy to get 8 mpg or more. For trucks operating 100,000 mi./year, that can equate to 4,200 gals. saved per year per truck.
Then there’s the fuel economy improvement being seen with newer equipment, a development that’s convincing a lot of carriers that the time may be right to buy new iron, even ahead of schedule, says Dale Tower, vice president of remarketing services for AmeriQuest Transportation. “On the one hand, we’ve seen a spike in [orders for] glider kits as fleets seek to escape the cost of new equipment,” he explains. “But on the other, the dramatic fuel savings—especially with 2014 and 2015 model-year equipment—is so good some fleets might find it is not worth keeping 2011 and 2012 model-year trucks.” “New SCR [selective catalytic reduction] trucks are performing significantly better, in general, than

LATE-MODEL OPTIONS
There is, though, a large swath of fleets seeking to avoid paying the higher sticker prices for new equipment. Global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, for example, notes that the average price of a new Class 8 tractor ranges from $110,000 to $125,000 per unit—an uptick that can be in the range of $30,000 per unit when compared to a 2006 or 2007 model truck, adds DTNA’s Hames.
The fuel economy gain achieved with new trucks is driving some buying decisions.

cover story significantly. Pointing to NADA pricing data, Clough says a fouryear-old highway tractor spec’d with a fuel-efficient “aero” package and 500,000 mi. on the odometer commanded $64,625 in December 2012, a number expected to slip only slightly to $61,100 in December 2013. By contrast, that same style of truck went for just $31,056 in December 2009.
Fleets buying new are seeing higher resale values for their two- to three-year-old equipment. When combined with the $30,000 to $50,000 price tag for a new trailer, Frost & Sullivan says that pushed the average cost for a single tractortrailer unit up to between $140,000 and $175,000 in 2013. That’s why many fleets are focused on buying late-model, low-mileage used trucks to replace their own aging vehicles. Research firm Polk notes that registrations of used commercial vehicles rose over 9% during the first half of the 2013 calendar year compared to the same period in 2012, while new commercial vehicle registrations during the first six months of 2013 increased by just 0.5% year-over-year.
STRENGTH IN USED MARKET On top of that, used commercial vehicle registrations during the first nine months of the 2013 calendar year were up just under 8% over the same period in 2012, with nearly 527,500 used commercial registrations recorded during the JanuarySeptember timeframe. This is the second best nine-month level of used transactions since Polk started tracking the data back in 2004, notes Gary Meteer, Polk’s director of aftermarket & commercial vehicle solutions. “The strength of used commercial vehicle transactions … reflects a competitive market for clean used equipment as it becomes available,” he adds, pointing out that by contrast, new commercial vehicle regis-

trations during the first nine months of 2013 increased by just 2.8% over the same time period in 2012. He also says that used transactions accounted for 53% of total commercial vehicle transactions during the July-September time period. Prior to the 2009 calendar year, used transactions accounted for between 41% and 48% of total registrations during the 2004 through 2008 calendar years. While the current level is down from 68% in the first two quarters of the 2011 calendar year, used transactions as a percent of total commercial transactions remain significantly above historical levels, Meteer emphasizes. Thus, that market trend is expected to keep the price premium for used Class 8 trucks elevated for a while, even though the average age and mileage of available used models in inventory is expected to keep increasing, according to Steve Clough, president of Arrow Truck Sales. Clough notes the percentage of three-year-old used trucks being sold dropped to 11% in 2013, compared to 28% in 2006. By contrast, the number of six- to seven-year-old trucks being sold in the used market jumped to 45% in 2013, up from 28% in 2006. The average mileage of used models is also on the rise, Clough points out, climbing to 537,000 mi. in 2013 compared to 479,000 in 2006. And the value of such equipment is up
“That, of course, is good for the new-truck buyer, as a higher residual value means a higher trade-in value and thus a lower net cost to buy a new vehicle,” he explains. “But for the used-truck buyer, that translates into higher acquisition costs, a higher down payment, a higher monthly payment, and higher maintenance cost since used trucks on the market today feature emissions control systems of some sort.” With higher costs for both new and used trucks, as well as the fact that freight rates have not yet gone up while driver wages and other expenses generally have, fleets are still expected to maintain a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to acquiring replacement vehicles. “I don’t think we will see the truck sales numbers of 2005 and 2006, at least not soon,” says Batts. “Costs are up a lot for new trucks, and rates have not gone up proportionately. “It’s very simple: If [carriers] don’t have freight, then they won’t buy trucks,” notes Eric Starks, FTR’s president. “Most large carriers have already modernized their fleets largely with new tractors though not trailers. All the others right now are not buying,” he explains. “At some point they will say [they’re] too old and get rid of [them], yet they will remain conservative and not add capacity. Even by 2016, we expect sales to be driven largely by replacement demand not fleet growth.” AT

he driveshaft is a component considered out of sight and often out of mind for most fleets simply because it’s tucked underneath a truck. Yet it’s a component that nonetheless needs maintenance, explains Dave Perkins, director of maintenance for Fraley & Schilling (F&S). Consequently, shops must devote time and money to taking care of it. That’s why Perkins is constantly on the lookout for what he calls “time-saving” components. He also notes that getting “a little extra time” maintenance-wise provides his team of technicians with an opportunity
PROBLEM
P
to focus on some of the intangible attributes of truck equipment care. “We like to put some additional effort into sprucing up the cabs for our drivers,” he says. “We’ll go in there and vacuum the floor and basically clean out the truck more than we normally would. It’s an extra benefit we like to give our drivers.” Whenever F&S contemplates a spec change for its equipment, Perkins not only looks to ensure big benefits are accrued, such as lower weight, fuel economy improvements, and lower maintenance costs, but whether the change can deliver extra time savings as well.
erkins found some of those little extras when F&S decided to try Dana Corp.’s Spicer Diamond Series driveshaft on six Kenworth tractors it purchased back in October 2011. The fleet added the driveshaft to a drivetrain system that included the Paccar MX 455-hp. engine and an Eaton Fuller FR Series 10-speed manual transmission. Instead of a typical two-piece driveshaft connected by a U-joint, the Diamond Series is created through a proprietary manufacturing process that pairs steel end fittings with a high-strength aluminum tube to create a singlepiece driveshaft weighing up to 40% less than traditional steel driveshafts. The design aims to reduce maintenance, corrosion, friction, and wear while allowing smoother, more convenient installation and operation. When first approached, Perkins worried that this new driveshaft wouldn’t be durable enough to handle the higher torque produced by F&S’s trucks because of its aluminum construction. A second concern was whether it would fit within the undercarriage, since the Diamond Series has a slightly larger diameter than traditional models.
“Even with our concerns, spacing remained a nonissue for our fleet, and we were able to properly fit the driveshaft with no problems at all,” Perkins says. “While saving weight was the biggest factor in our decision to install the six new Diamond Series driveshafts—saving 70 lbs. per truck—we also are expecting to realize some maintenance benefits,” he explains. “With a standard two-piece driveshaft assembly, we would typically have to change the carrier bearing and U-joints after four or five years of service. That won’t be necessary because it is a one-piece assembly. “At first, some of my associates and I did have concerns because this is a new technology, so we kept a close eye on the weld that connects the steel end yoke to the aluminum tube,” Perkins continues. “After two years and 200,000 mi. of service now on all six of our trucks with the driveshafts, we have had no issues at all. The weld is a strong one and just as secure as the day it arrived.” He adds that the two hours of time it takes to change the carrier bearing and U-joints may not seem significant, however, the time adds up quickly for a fleet of 470 —SEAN KILCARR trucks.

Aerofficient fixed fairings for trailers featuring bottom panels that swing in and out to pass over obstructions are available in “toe-in” and “landing gear wrap” models and will not interfere with intermodal trailer lifting equipment. DuraPlate AeroSkirts from Wabash Composites are available in sizes for 28-, 48- and 53-ft. trailers. The division of Wabash National Corp. recently produced its 100,000th DuraPlate AeroSkirt. Utility Trailer’s line of side skirts features a bracing
The use of aerodynamic devices is expected to grow
system that allows the skirt to flex inward and outward. Mounted on galvanized high tensile steel braces, the USS-120A-4 skirt is made of fiberglass reinforced plastic. The SmartTruck UT6 Plus Trailer UnderTray system incorporates the company’s side fairing design and is installed inside the footprint of the trailer. The AirFlow Deflector for trailers is designed to control airflow around the axle. Mounted on the axle assembly, the deflector slides with the rear axle. ATDynamics offers its TrailerTail to eliminate drag at the rear flat surface of the trailer. TrailerTail AutoDeploy systems eliminate driver interaction with the device altogether. The systems utilize radar technology mounted under the trailer to measure vehicle speed and automatically deploy the TrailerTail at 35 mph. Also available is the TrailerTail AutoAware system, which adds a driver notification light on the front left corner of the trailer. Airman’s AirWedge II forces airflow to break vacuum at the rear of the trailer. Transtex Composite produces the Maximum Flex Skirt, which is designed to accommodate trailers used in intermodal rail loading applications. One other way to reduce aerodynamic drag around trailers is to use wheel covers. The Deflecktor, designed with fabric and stainless steel wire for use on 22.5 x 8.25in. aluminum and steel wheels and 22.5 x 14-in. widebase wheels, does not require tools for installation. RealWheels Aero Covers for 22.5- and 24.5-in. aluminum and steel dual and wide-base single wheels feature ventilating ports to help eliminate corrosion. Made from stainless steel, the Aero Covers are available with braided stainless steel air valve extensions.
