Prediction time
I
If you thought 2011 was interesting, just wait until this year really gets started. As it stands right now, we could witness a continued economic revival or get ringside seats to watch the sequel to the “Great Recession.” I think that tells you something about the new year, when there is no middle ground to be found amid the economic prognostication. With that being said, here are some There is no predictions from Nariman Behravesh, chief middle ground economist for consulting firm IHS Global. The good news, in Behravesh’s view, is in 2012 that U.S. domestic risks have diminished. Consumers seem willing to spend, and businesses are more disposed to hire. U.S. gross domestic product growth should average between 1.5% and 2%. Behravesh thinks commodity prices, though, are likely to get pulled down by weaker global demand. The biggest demand-side risk is the possibility of a hard landing in China. In the case of oil, markets are worried about an escalation of the conflict over Iran’s nuclear weapons program. That said, the most likely scenario is for the price of oil and other commodities to fluctuate around current levels. With world growth softening and commodity prices off their peaks, inflation in every region of the world will decline. Only a total financial meltdown in Europe or a sharp slowdown in China’s growth could hamper what otherwise will be a year of steady growth. There you have it. Let’s just hope the rosier parts of Behravesh’s predictions are the ones that come to fruition. AT

reight doesn’t exist at the trucker’s convenience. It’s there or not there to facilitate the needs of local consumers, whether those consumers are private citizens or manufacturers. Capacity is an area-by-area, freight-lane-by-freight-lane issue. Some areas and lanes will always be out of balance with more loads than trucks; others will have fewer loads than trucks. The assumption that it’s all the broker’s fault is mostly hogwash (there are very few exceptions). Truckers need to understand the dynamics of the freight they haul. It’s about having established lanes, knowing the truck-toload ratio for both the area from which you are loading and the area to which the load delivers, and basing your rates on that information. To venture into an area without this information is like reaching into a dark hole; you never know what you might find. It could be empty, it could have a rattlesnake, or there might be a treasure. The same can be said about taking a load to an unfamiliar destination. Chances are your truck will either come out empty or you’ll get bit. Your established lane is the treasure. Remote weight monitoring T ruckWeight, a provider of wireless onboard truck scale technology, is now offering customers the Virtual Weigh Station. The free software allows users of the company’s onboard wireless sensors for mechanical and air suspensions to quickly and easily monitor and record weights. Using a small receiver with a USB cable that connects to any Windowsbased laptop in the cab or desktop computer in the office, weights may be uploaded from the TruckWeight onboard sensors, according to the company. In addition, TruckWeight pointed out that with a range of 500 ft., the software will report and record individual axle weights “with an excellent screen view, as well as gross vehicle weights with an easy touch to change from rig to rig.” Reports can be automatically generated in an Excel format.

Users can monitor the weight of a vehicle remotely with software.
The Virtual Weigh Station also gives operators the option to tare each individual part load as it is added to the rig and record the net weight of each dump while keeping a running total. Just go to www.truckweight.com for a copy of the user’s manual and to view the video tutorial.
New side fairings option
A
erofficient has released new fixed side fairings made from automotive-grade TPO material and weighing just over 100 lbs. The hinged three-panel construction, which consists of a top, middle and bottom panel, was quality-tested to validate the design, the company said. The panels have a 10-year expected life span. The hinged design allows the fairing to clear 24-in.-high obstacles without suffering any damage. The bottom panel swings 180 deg. and can bend 90 deg. in either direction.
16 American Trucker/January 2012
A panel takes just one hour for installation by two technicians and does not require any special tools. “We started our business by asking operators what they wanted in a side fairing product. We got very clear answers: durability and light weight,” said CEO Jim Reiman. “Industry executives want to save money, not spend money fixing broken fairings.” An optional landing gear wrap to shield refrigeration fuel tanks is offered as well. www.aerofficient.com

Working together
Y
Years ago, I spoke at a conference and made some remarks regarding the outdated rim matching and mount/ demount wall charts for truck and bus tires from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). From the stage, I never really know who is in the audience, so I wasn’t completely surprised when someone from the agency contacted me a couple of weeks later to discuss my criticism. After minutes on the phone, Industry input aitfew became obvious that my should be commuresults in new issues nicated to a wider group of officials so a meeting safety charts OSHA was scheduled. Like most government agencies, resources are limited within the Dept. of Labor for these types of special projects. Since OSHA did not have the budget to start from scratch, we agreed to put together a team of experts from tire, wheel and tool manufacturers to develop and submit the drafts that could serve as the basis for the new charts. Under the umbrella of the Tire Industry Assn. and the Rubber Manufacturers Assn., the industry set out to update the information. In the process, the two-chart set was expanded into three charts to allow the demounting and mounting information for multi-piece and single-piece rims to be listed separately. After a lengthy period of development and review, OSHA released the new charts on Nov. 30, 2011. It’s been decades since OSHA and the tire industry have worked together for the common good of the general worker, yet this is exactly how the system is supposed to work. The industry expressed concern over the dated information, the government listened, and then they acted on those issues with industry input. Both sides worked together to update the content for the good of the
18 American Trucker/January 2012
workers. After all, the top priority of everyone involved throughout the project was to improve employee safety. For example, in the old mount/demount chart, there was no mention of circumferential zipper ruptures in steel cord radial truck tires. If technicians do not know what to look for, they can suffer serious or fatal injuries after they are struck by the blast of air or the assembly. The new tubeless tire wall chart includes a picture of the bulges in the sidewall and includes the industry-recommended practice for inspecting and inflating tubeless radial truck tires to help protect technicians from injury. It’s always been said that you should “police yourself before the government decides to police you.” Fleets that perform any aspect of truck tire service likely fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.177, so these new OSHA charts must be available in the area where tires are serviced. Fortunately, OSHA took our advice and converted the traditional wall charts into an easily printable booklet, which contains the exact information and provides the same level of compliance as the posters hanging on the wall. In fact, OSHA declined to print the posters and has chosen instead to distribute electronic versions of the wall charts and the booklet on their website so those in the industry can print whatever works best for them. Truck tire and wheel service is inherently dangerous, which means proper training is the first step toward reducing the chances of an accident. The new OSHA charts do a great job of identifying the most common risks and outlining the procedures that are necessary to minimize them. So don’t delay. Just go to www.tireindustry.org/cts.asp to get your free copy of the new OSHA charts. AT

Safety first
F
Attention to maintenance details keep trucks running safely
For the North Canton, OH-based Kenan Advantage Group (KAG), specifications and maintenance practices are key elements in ensuring safety remains a top priority for North America’s largest bulk transportation provider to the petroleum, specialty products, and merchant gas industries. “Our equipment is purchased to meet our needs for durability, efficiency, low cost of ownership, and safety,” says R.J. Molder, vice president of fleet services at KAG. “Considering the petroleum and chemical products we haul, we’re especially focused on setting the bar for highway safety.” KAG serves customers from about 125 terminals and 175 satellite locations in 38 states with a fleet of 5,000 tractors and 6,000 trailers. The company’s focus on safety includes spec’ing Bendix ESP (electronic stability control) with ATC roll stability control systems on its Volvo, Mack and Peterbilt tractors. “We’ve also been adding Bendix Wingman for its adaptive cruise control features on new power units and using onboard recorders to report events related to roll stability,” Molder says. “That information helps improve and change driver behavior.” On its LBT fuel tankers, KAG is addressing safety with Haldex ABS
20 American Trucker/January 2012
and trailer rollover stability systems and by spec’ing models with the lowest possible center of gravity. Double conical or tapered barrels keep the load as close to the ground as possible, Molder explains, and a 77.5-in. track axle improves stability by widening the footprint of the trailer.
PRESERVING TRACTOR LIFE KAG tractors are kept in service for at least 700,000 mi. before replacement, and any vehicle that receives a major overhaul may be operated for an additional two years. “We have a very comprehensive preventive maintenance program for our equipment, and we’re using technology to manage those activities more effectively than ever before,” Molder says. KAG’s maintenance program is managed in each business unit by a regional maintenance supervisor and a lead technician or supervisor at each shop. A centrally located fleet services administrator oversees all work. A large number of inspection, maintenance and repair transactions take place for the fleet in various locations, so ensuring a consistent level of service customized to the fleet’s requirements and needs is essential. Central to that effort at KAG is MVASIST, the Internet-based system developed by Decisiv and offered by
Go to
Volvo Trucks North America. The service management platform holds all fleet- and truck-specific information and communication about service events in online folders, regardless of where service is performed. For outside work, MVASIST provides dealer personnel with information on warranty, previous service events and established parts pricing. The MV Preferred Fleet-Purchasing program from Volvo Trucks and Mack Trucks provides parts, maintenance and repairs, and roadside assistance. With Decisiv’s help, KAG has developed a “Kenan Inspection” in MVASIST. Required anytime a company tractor is at a company shop or dealership for service, the inspection covers tires, lights, seat belts, and safety equipment. KAG also uses TMT Fleet Maintenance software from TMW Systems, which is fully integrated with MVASIST to incorporate data from internal and external service events. “As we continue to experience steady growth,” Molder says, “specifying new equipment and effectively managing and maintaining it is increasingly important for ensuring lower costs, higher reliability and most important, uncompromised safety.”

A green path to savings Being green is almost second nature to Pete Overgaag—indeed, he’s green “four ways,” as he likes to tell an audience. First, for starters, his family’s business, Hollandia Produce, just notched its 41st year in the agricultural business. The second way it’s green deals with the company’s shift to “greenhouse farming.” “We grow all our produce hydroponically, including butter lettuce, 3 in 1 lettuce, upland cress, and red butter lettuce, delivering it fresh and alive,” he explains. Growing lettuce this way also helps Hollandia substantially reduce the number of pesticides it uses, since the greenhouses keep insects out. Third, the business completely changed the color of its trucks, moving from a traditional blue—harkening back to one of the three colors of the national flag of Holland, where Overgaag’s parents emigrated from in 1968—to
deep emerald green to reflect the produce grown by the company as well as its environmental sensibilities. That brings us to the fourth green in Overgaag’s mantra. When one of Hollandia’s tractor-trailers came due for replacement in late 2010, he decided to purchase a compressed natural gas-powered Peterbilt Class 8 daycab tractor. However, Overgaag notes there’s a silent yet critical “fifth” piece to the company’s green strategy as well—how it plans to save money with its new green tractor-trailer, especially in terms of reducing the fleet’s maintenance budget. “Overall, we expect to be able to keep our hybrid reefer trailers for 10 years,” he explains. That might even be expanded in the future as more of the distribution centers Hollandia currently delivers to begin to offer plug-in capability for refrigerated trailers.
Surprisingly, he discovered, the biggest savings projected to be produced by Hollandia’s new green vehicle will come from the trailer. For starters, the Utility VS2RA reefer trailer is equipped with underside fairings to help reduce drag, boosting the fuel efficiency of the entire vehicle 12 to 24% depending on how and where it operates (the aerodynamics save the most fuel at highway speed while doing little in stop-and-go style operation). Yet it’s the hybrid diesel-electric Thermo King Smart Reefer unit that really improves the cost savings profile of this new green equipment in a number of important ways, Overgaag says. “First, it’s a ‘plug in’ reefer, so when it’s backed into our cold storage warehouse for loading, we don’t have to operate its diesel engine to cool it down,” he explains. “That’s huge because we load our trailers during the day, meaning the reefer can stay in operation for 10 hours sometimes.” The drivers disconnect from shore power at night
when they make their delivery runs, Overgaag notes. The significant reduction in operating hours for the reefer’s diesel engine saves money in several critical ways, he points out. “First, it’s saving us a lot of fuel. Second, we need to perform less maintenance on the unit itself because of those reduced operating hours,” Overgaag says. Translation: The Thermo King dealer two hours away in Los Angeles will probably only need to send one of its technicians out to Hollandia’s location once a year to conduct preventive maintenance chores versus three times a year for comparable diesel-only reefers. “We’re not just saving on the maintenance itself here; we’re saving on the trip time charges for having a mobile technician come out here as well,” Overgaag notes. Such savings are predicted to be pretty significant because the reduced wear and tear on the hybrid reefers resulting from more plug-in usage means Hollandia can extend its trailer ownership cycle by five years.

business of trucking
Road to Success I B Y T I M B R A D Y, BUSINESS EDITOR
’ve got an idea for an incentive and advancement program to help reduce driver turnover, provide comprehensive training for entry-level truckers, and create a self-driven career advancement program. What if carriers embraced a career ladder comprised of student, trainee, apprentice, journeyman, master trucker, and master trucker trainer? In order to advance from any of the five levels, the trucker must pass
a skills and knowledge test administered by a third party (not the carrier). Here’s an outline of the levels as I’ve envisioned them. Student trucker: The student would undergo a training period of 480 hours spread over three months. It would include 240 hours behind the wheel including highway and city driving, backing and tight quarters handling, and understanding the mechanics of a truck. The remaining 240 hours would

be spent in the classroom learning regulations, CSA, and paperwork requirements. Trainee: Once the entry-level trucker graduates from trucking school and receives that CDL, he/ she would be placed with a master trucker trainer for a minimum of six months at his/her carrier. Apprentice: After the trainee becomes an apprentice, he/she is teamed with a journeyman or master trucker for a minimum of one

year. The apprentice gains additional experience by sharing driving with the lead team driver. Journeyman: To become a journeyman, meaning a solo driver or lease operator, the apprentice must complete 10 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) and pass a skills and knowledge test. He/she must also have a minimum of 12 months and 100,000 mi. of accident-free experience, with no major traffic or out-of-service violations. Master trucker: This requires an additional 30 hours of CEUs covering driving, freight handling and trucking business skills, and knowledge. He/she must have a minimum of five years and 500,000 mi., pass a master trucker’s skills and knowledge test, and have an accident-free driving record. Master trucker trainer: In addition to the required 30 CEUs to become a master trucker, he/she must complete a truck driver trainer certification course worth 30 CEUs via a written test and skills exam. Te trucker must be accident- and ticket-free for a minimum of five years to receive this certification. Since we are in tough economic times (and even if we weren’t), where can an individual get the money for almost two years of training before driving on their own? The answer lies in how much it’s currently costing the industry and its carriers to maintain a safe fleet of truckers. With the increase in turnover, the lack of available people interested in either becoming truckers or becoming career truckers, the cost of finding qualified and well-trained individuals is becoming higher each year. Added to all of this, when the current longtime career truckers (read the Baby Boomer generation) begin retiring,
Go to
the number of truckers will be reduced even further. Having spent over 20 years and 2.5 million mi. driving a tractor-trailer, I know how long it takes to become a proficient, skilled trucker. I can tell you three weeks in truck driving school and a couple of months with an underqualified driver trainer don’t even begin to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to be a trucker. From my experience, it takes 500,000 mi. and about five years to become fully skilled. Under the current pattern of
Creating an opportunity for advancement will reduce turnover training, you have drivers with six months of experience teaching trainees winter driving skills when the trainer has never driven a truck through the winter. Tere is currently a disconnect between training and the required skills needed to drive a truck, which is creating a greater safety hazard. All you have to do is traverse any Interstate afer a major snowstorm and see all the trucks off in the median or in the ditch to know the training is incomplete. Te cost of damage to trucks and freight and loss of product getting to market is staggering, not to mention the cost of workers’ compensation payouts and increased premiums due to injuries. One of the biggest problems in the industry for smaller trucking companies is that unless a carrier is self-insured, they’re unable to hire trucking school graduates. Insur-

ance requirements generally mandate they must wait for that driver to have at least two years of experience. Tis program would allow carriers to ‘grow their own’ properly trained truckers through the student, trainee and apprentice program. In the long run, reduced turnover and insurance costs would make this program a more cost-effective option. It also creates a career path truckers can follow for advancement if they so choose. A career path would also reduce turnover for a carrier, significantly shrinking costs (it currently can cost $15,000 to $25,000 to hire a trucker) and lower the abysmal turnover rate, which is approaching 80%. A carrier with 10 drivers could potentially save up to $150,000 per year if they reduced their turnover to just 20%. Where’s the money going to come from to fund this type of program? From the savings in the reduction of other costs as a result of higher quality training and retention. For a 10-driver carrier, the savings would exceed the cost to fund this program by several thousand dollars, all of which enhance the carrier’s bottom line. With increased scrutiny by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, retirement of truckers who are part of the Boomer generation, and fewer individuals wanting to endure a trucker’s lifestyle, the industry needs to develop a new business model for how it hires and works with its truckers. Tis trucker incentive and advancement program addresses many of those challenges with a proactive approach. AT

f you think it was tough to find the right type of used truck for your business by the close of 2011, you’ll find that the pickings are even slimmer as this year gets up and rolling, according to Steve Clough, president of Arrow Truck Sales. The reason boils down to simple math, he explains. The inventory of used trucks in any given year is directly proportional to the number of new trucks built and sold some three to four years in the past. Based on that algorithm, for example, it’s easy to see why 2010 proved to be a banner year for used-truck buyers, as that’s when 2006 and 2007 model vehicles started moving into the market. Those were record years for factory shipments in the Class 8 business as 371,916 and 201,278 new units, respectively, hit the road in North America, according to data tracked by FTR Associates. During the Great Recession years, though, new-truck production plummeted. As a result, the pipeline that feeds the used market started to dry up last year. Clough says that the availability of three- to four-year-old trucks with 300,000 to 400,000 mi. on the odometer dropped 35% in 2011 compared to 2010. He expects that availability to decline another 20% this year.
SHRINKING SUPPLY
By 2013, Clough explains, availability should go down another 11% because that’s when the used-truck market will be relying on trucks produced in 2009, one of the leanest production years in the history of the Class 8 industry. During that year, only 119,714 factory shipments reached North American highways and byways, according to FTR data. “That’s, of course, assuming the industry stays with the three- to four-year trade cycle,” he points out. “We’re seeing some movement to
Go to
five- and six-year trade cycles now, but not a lot.” Zach Bourn, director of used equipment for Paccar Financial, adds that most fleets are talking about “replacement” units versus “growth units” in 2012. “When you combine that with a truck market forecasted to be higher in 2012 than 2011, there will just be more trades,” he says. “However, very few units by historical standards were purchased new in 2008 and 2009, thus making for continued tight supply of late-model, lowmileage trucks.” Bourn points out that low-mileage aerodynamic products will continue to remain in demand on the used-truck sales lot through this year. “Pre-2008 model-year traditional models will command top dollar due to scarcity in the marketplace, while daycabs and models with smaller sleepers [less than 63 in.] will continue to stay ahead of a typical over-the-road [OTR] configured tractor for all model years,” he notes. John Diez, senior vice presidentasset management for Ryder System, notes that this year “will be another strong year” for used-truck sales, and he doesn’t expect pricing to fall off much at all. “There will be strong demand for OTR tractors, and there will be continued challenges for customers

looking for late-model, low-mileage units,” he says. “Daycabs will continue to sell very well versus sleepers.” On the medium-duty side, Diez notes that there is more stability in terms of inventory and pricing as this year unfolds, but stresses “pricing will be up year-over-year for these units.” Steve Tam, vice president-commercial vehicle sector for ACT Research Co., notes that used-truck prices averaged 25% higher at the end of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010, and he expects such a price premium to stick around as inventories will remain thin for at least several more years. “We’re going to continue to see some price depreciation through 2012 and 2013, but base prices will remain above historical averages for a while despite the fact that usedtruck age and mileage continue to rise,” Tam says. “We’re going to continue to be in this situation as we’ve been deficient in manufacturing new trucks for several years.”
SALES STAY STRONG
Tam stresses, though, that the price premium for used trucks cuts two ways: While it raises the equipment acquisition cost for operations that rely heavily on used trucks, it also boosts trade-in values, and higher trade-in values are one reason newtruck orders and sales stayed robust through the end of 2011. Mike Stephens, manager for Ryder Vehicle Sales in Dallas, TX, recently told American Trucker that while he’s seen good times during his 18-year career selling used trucks, he’s “never seen it like this.” In particular, he’s still seeing many more fleets than usual coming into the used-truck market, buying five or six trucks at a time. He says fleets and owner-operators alike are more willing to purchase
American Trucker/January 2012 27
cover story higher mileage equipment—as long as it’s clean and well-maintained. “It’s been tough to keep up with demand right now. Buyers are willing to pay for good equipment with the right specs … and we’ve also seen a lot more larger fleet customers [buying used trucks] than in the past,” Stephens says. Jack Mitchell, vice presidentremarketing for Penske Truck Leasing, stresses that this creates a “positive outlook” for used trucks of all classes in 2012, and while inventories will remain tight, the pricing side will remain stable. “The demand for daycabs will remain strong, as low-mileage, late-model trucks are still very hard to find,” he adds, echoing Paccar’s Bourn.
MILEAGE MATTERS
Mitchell notes that the market for vocational models has nowhere to go but up. “With construction improving, vocational models should be selling better,” he explains. “The market for sleepers, however, has changed. There were so many a few years ago, but now inventory is shrinking and thus mileages will go up.” As for Penske, Mitchell says the top end of acceptable OTR usedtruck mileage is now moving from 500,000 to up around 650,000. Looking ahead, Penske foresees used-truck values dropping, all in accordance with the mileages that are available. “Mileage definitely plays a major role,” Mitchell explains. “We are seeing situations where fleets are holding onto their equipment longer and in some cases directly competing with us as they’re selling the equipment themselves.” Arrow’s Clough feels mileage affects trades. “For one, we can’t really see widespread extension of the initial ownership cycle beyond four years. Once you get into the higher mileage bracket, you’re see-

with what will be new to the market—the 2007 emissions standards.
EMISSIONS TWIST

Demand for trailers remains strong
D
ata compiled and analyzed by ACT Research Co. as 2011 came to a close indicates that demand for commercial trailer net orders surged in November of last year, with 28,393 trailers added to the order board. According to the firm’s data, this is the strongest monthly order volume for trailer makers since March 2006. “November’s numbers confirmed that recent strong quotation activity at the OEMs was real,” says Frank Maly, director of CV transportation analysis & research with ACT. “The backlog/build ratio jumped to 51/2 months at the end of November, an advance far above expectations.” As a result, the trailer industry ended 2011, in his words, on a firm note, “which means a strong start to 2012.” Dick Giromini, president & CEO of trailer maker Wabash National, pointed out in the company’s third-quarter earnings statement last year that trailer makers would be focusing on obtaining “better margins through continued optimization initiatives and an improving mix of higher margin orders. “Longer term, as we enter the 2012 order season, we are committed to improving pricing and margins,” he notes. “Our industry is still early in the recovery cycle, and we are well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for new trailers.”

Upping guarantees
A
Slacking sales of new trucks in the past means fewer used trucks will be available in the present. system prior to remarketing,” he says. “In addition, some used-truck sellers may also include some sort of warranty provided by a third party to put buyers at ease.” Bourn also thinks another major challenge for used-truck buyers will be structuring their financing to provide for a payment to fit their cash flow. “New- and used-truck prices have increased between 15 and 25% over the last three years. Overall financing terms remain between four and five years for late-model equipment, [with] shorter [terms] for earlier models,” he says.
year-over-year, but “retail pricing” may spike, Mitchell says. “For example, we’re selling a 2006 International 8600 model with low mileage for $11,000 more as compared to just a year ago,” he says. It all adds up to difficult decisions for truckers, who are seeing prices go up, inventory go down, and financing remain tight. And for those who rely on their trucks to make a living, that is a combination that puts added strain on the bottom line. AT
s higher mileage equipment begins entering used-truck inventories across the U.S. in larger numbers, greater efforts are being undertaken to reassure customers about the quality of the iron they’re buying. For example, last October, SelecTrucks, a division of Daimler Trucks North America, introduced what it dubs a new “pre-owned truck certification” called SelectCertified. In addition to a standard 12-mo./100,000mi. Select Limited Warranty, all SelectCertified trucks include a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. The company added that its SelectCertified certification process also includes a 148-point inspection by factory-trained Freightliner technicians; all mechanical and cosmetic components that fail inspection are repaired or replaced to original OEM standards; the engine, transmission, and rear axle(s) fluids and filters are replaced; dynamometer testing is conducted; a full federal DOT inspection and certification is undertaken; and the truck undergoes a comprehensive five-step interior and exterior detailing experience.
PRICES UP
“I think more used-truck buyers will ask for retail loans with balloon financing to keep payments at historical levels, while lease financing may become more prevalent,” Bourn adds. Yet Penske’s Mitchell thinks finding low-mileage equipment at the right price will remain the preeminent hurdle for used-truck buyers. “There is just not that much on the ground right now that was traded [last] year,” he says. Due to the continuing shortage of used equipment, used-truck tradein values should remain fairly level

DEF
T
The marketplace for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) in the U.S. has increased dramatically since 2010 emissions regulations went into effect. DEF is used to treat the exhaust of engines running selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology. Experts believe DEF consumption will double this year to between 140 million and 150 million gals. If you’ve got questions about this latest technology, you’re far from alone. Chad Dombroski, director, Air1, Yara North America, notes that customers are asking many questions. First on the list are concerns about purchasing the correct amount of DEF to contain costs and locations where over-the-road drivers can find the additive. “If using or buying DEF is new to a customer, we help figure out what makes the most sense from a cost/practicality standpoint based on the number of vehicles in their fleet, the amount of diesel consumed per week, and storage capabilities,” Dombroski says. “To help our customers locate retail DEF, the Air1Mobile Locator App for iPhone and Android [devices] allows customers to search by city, state or zip code; calculate distance to the nearest DEF location; and view the retailer’s address,” he adds. Air1, which is the brand under which Yara sells DEF in the U.S., is available at more than 600 public filling stations, truckstops, automatic filling stations, chemical distribution depots, and most major truck dealerships. Dombroski adds a few words of advice for fleet owners when dealing with DEF: ❑ Protect it from fuel, oil, grease, water, dust, dirt, metal and detergent contamination. If the equipment needs to be cleaned or rinsed internally, use de-mineralized water or DEF. Don’t use tap water. ❑ Use dedicated DEF equipment for storing and dispensing. Don’t use funnels and bottles used for other fluids. Don’t refill previously used DEF containers. ❑ Store DEF between 12 and 86 deg. F to maintain its optimal shelf life of 12 months. Do not store DEF in direct sunlight. At Terra Environmental Technologies (TET), which produces TerraCair, the marketing and selling of DEF is like any other product. “The TET/TerraCair customer is looking for the same

things as any customer buying any product: quality, reliability, availability, product, and performance integrity,” says John Beumler, marketing manager. “Once we’ve satisfied the customer that we can address these areas, we can discuss sizes, prices, and build a long-term relationship.” For availability, customers want to know they won’t have delivery hiccups or backorders and TET is able to meet their growing DEF demands, Beumler says. “Our customers have a direct link to the manufacturer. CF Industries, TET’s parent company, is the leading urea producer in North America. “Tankers of TerraCair are delivered to our small-pack packagers to fill the 1-gal. and 2.5-gal. jugs you see on the shelves,” Beumler adds. “However, before we off-load that very first shipment at TerraCair’s small-pack packagers, our quality team certifies each location to ISO 22241 International DEF standards. Similarly, when we off-load a 5,000-gal. tanker or stainless steel rail car, we perform the same internationally mandated quality training and check-off processes.” At Old World Industries, Charles Culverhouse, DEF equipment business manager, advises customers to watch for products that don’t meet their individual needs. “Many of our customers are looking for more costeffective DEF storage and dispensing solutions.
