It’s been a great privilege to serve you, our readers, as American Trucker editor for the last six years. As I write this last editor’s page and shift over to editor-at-large, please join me in welcoming Kevin Jones to take over the helm. Kevin is no stranger to those in trucking circles, having covered this industry for nearly 10 years now A changing for various publications. A graduate of Stanford University and a resident of of the guard as Little Rock, AR, Kevin started out in the Kevin Jones takes newspaper industry before an opportunity to write about trucks for a living left over as editor him fascinated by the inner workings of global supply chains—and the critical role owner-operators and small carriers play in making them work. He ended up spending almost a decade talking to owner-operators from across the U.S. and even a few overseas, along with the CEOs of truck makers, mega-fleets and mega-brokers, all with the same focus: figuring out if the little guy can still compete effectively in the freight business. In short, you’ll find Kevin’s original take on all things trucking more than a little interesting. Kevin is simply a great addition to the American Trucker team, and I’m looking forward to working with him. So, here’s a toast to Kevin and to all of you out there in the world of trucking. Let’s hope 2015 brings business success and good cheer to us all. AT

Restart rules revert to 2013 standards

T

he $1.1-trillion omnibus federal spending bill Congress passed last month, which funds the government through September of this year, included a provision that suspends the controversial 34-hour restart restrictions in the federal hours-of-service rules until the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) conducts a “naturalistic” study of the pros and cons of the rule. While many in the industry have fought hard to get the restart rule adjusted or removed, there remains a possibility that it may return at some point. The restart restrictions that have been suspended required two consecutive overnight periods from 1 to 5 a.m. and limited use of that restart to once every 168 hours. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) inserted the rider language in the omnibus bill. The study would assess the operational, safety, health and fatigue effects of the provision. “The Collins rider would compel FMCSA to complete a ‘naturalistic’, that is to say, realworld, study of how those provisions impact trucking,” said Dave Heller, director of safety & policy for the Truckload Carriers Assn. “The intention of the study is to gather sufficient data to demonstrate whether the intent for having the two restart provisions is correct. The previous FMCSA study on this was widely viewed as not reflecting the reality of how trucking operates.” According to Heller, the study may confirm FMCSA’s contention that drivers who use the consecutive overnight periods to rest are safer. It

4 American Trucker/January 2015

Drivers no longer have to include consecutive 1 to 5 a.m. periods of rest in a 34-hour restart. also may confirm what the industry believes; that is, that it does not make safer drivers. In fact, it makes it more unsafe because additional trucks are on the highways during rush-hour periods. “Either way,” Heller said, “we won’t know which way it will go until the study is completed and we see the data it generated.” “Congress is due to take action on a surface transportation reauthorization bill this spring,” said Norita Taylor, spokesperson for the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Assn. (OOIDA). “One of OOIDA’s top priorities for that bill is significant reforms to FMCSA to return motor carrier regulations and enforcement to a focus on the issues that actually do have a strong relationship with crashes. “Part of that effort should be continued reforms to the HOS rules, including but not limited to the use of the 34-hour restart,” Taylor added. “We are hopeful that both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in the House and Senate will take action on all of these issues next year.”

trucking insights

Recruit to retain R

etaining drivers begins at the very first contact with a prospective truck driver looking to be employed by or contracted to your trucking company. You must strive to make a positive impression concerning your company; not just its policies, but how everyone will work together to make it a positive, profitable, long-lasting experience. For this to occur, the interviewer must provide the following to each potential trucker: 1. Provide the good, the bad, and the ugly details about the position for which he or she is applying. 2. Show the prospect that you have a clear and defined path to advance their driving careers with your company— from performance and safety bonuses to increases in pay. 3. Ask what’s needed: monthly takehome pay; home time; and any other concerns, wants, or needs he or she has regarding working for your company. 4. Be brutally honest with all of your answers. It is getting harder and harder to find top-drawer, qualified truck drivers. When you do find a candidate who is worth hiring, make an effort to keep him or her on board. Your success and profitability depend on it. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Sprinter eyes vocational market

T

he new optional 4x4 suspension package being introduced with the 2015 model Sprinter van is part of an effort by Daimler to increase its vocational market share. “It’s a great opportunity for us to win the business of the plumber in Bangor, Maine; the hotel resort in the Rocky Mountains; natural gas field workers in the Midwest; and oilfield operators in Texas,” Claus Tritt, general manager for commercial vans at Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) division, explained to American Trucker during a special ride and drive event at Sprinter’s U.S. assembly plant outside Charleston, SC. “It’s an even greater opportunity

Optional 4x4 suspension package is designed for more rugged applications. since at the end of the day, it is really a 4x2 suspension that provides 4x4 capability when needed. It’s an on-demand system,” he stressed. “So now we have a true van competitor to the 4x4 quad cab pickups.” While the 2015 Sprinter 4x4 van is not officially considered an “off-

roader” by the OEM, its factoryinstalled all-wheel drive system distributes torque at a ratio of 35:65 between the front and rear axle via an electronic traction system dubbed “4ETS” that’s push-button activated by the driver. The OEM added that the 2015 Sprinter 4x4 can also be equipped with an optional low-range gear that makes it even more sure-footed in difficult terrain. When the driver pushes the low-range button, gearing is shortened by 42% and traction power is increased accordingly. To help increase the slope-climbing ability of the van, MBUSA boosted body height by 4.3 in. in the front and 3.1 in. in the rear. —SEAN KILCARR

hevrolet has announced that its City Express compact cargo van is now available at dealers. The commercial vehicle is available under GM Fleet & Commercial’s Business Choice program, which provides qualified business owners with a $350 “upfit cash allowance.” Chevrolet is also offering City Express buyers “ship-thru service,” which sends the vehicle directly to an upfitter from the plant. The upfitted vehicle is delivered directly to the dealer once complete. “Our existing customers will love getting behind the wheel of the City Express when it’s at their Chevrolet dealership,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet & Commercial. “But we’re most looking forward to giving potential new customers the opportunity to experience one of many Chevrolet commercial vehicles that best fit their needs.” To make shopping and purchasing easier and more convenient, Chevrolet is providing web tools on Chevrolet.com that provide customization options for potential buyers. “We understand our customers are often too busy to step away from the office to visit a dealership,” said Peper. “[This] gives them the option to build a City Express online with their specific color, trim and even wheels, so that they are fully aware of the cost to their business before they meet with a salesperson.” Buyers also can compare the City Express to other vehicles in the marketplace, that is, “how it stacks up in areas like fuel economy, pricing, and safety.” City Express is covered by Chevrolet Complete Care, which includes scheduled maintenance for 2 years/24,000 mi. as well as 5 years/100,000 mi. of 24-hour roadside assistance and courtesy transportation. www.chevrolet.com

Bendix increases reman focus R esponding rapidly to the positive growth that’s been steadily lifting up the trucking industry, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems has been “reinvigorating” its remanufacturing of heavy-duty truck components for aftermarket sale, key executives explained to American Trucker at the company’s expansive manufacturing facilities in Huntington, IN. While this latest energizing of the component reman’ing that Bendix has been engaged in for nearly 40 years is an ongoing initiative, “signif-

icant changes in our remanufacturing processes have been completed in the last year,” Mike Pogorelc, Huntington plant manager said. “These developments are in response to the strong uptick in our business recently,” he added. “Bendix’s remanufacturing of components alone this year brought in $95 million in revenue,” said Henry Foxx, director of remanufacturing. Vector warranties boosted AT&T adds

C

arrier Transicold said it is boosting the warranties of its Vector trailer refrigeration units. The warranties for the hybrid Vector 8500 and Vector 8600MT units now include 4-year/8,000hour major component coverage for the engine, generator and compressor. This compares with 3-year/6,000-hour coverage on earlier models. Additionally, the APX control’s microprocessor and stepper valve modules are warrantied for 5 years/ 10,000 hours, one year longer than comparative control systems. “Vector systems deliver dual benefits of reduced maintenance and higher system reliability because they are less complex than conven-

tional mechanical systems and comparative semi-electric systems,” said Patrick McDonald, product manager-trailer. “Our latest-generation Vector units build on this legacy, employing a fully hermetic electric scroll compressor with 70% fewer moving parts than a traditional reciprocating compressor.” Warranties of unlimited coverage for 1 year and 3-year/6,000-hour limited coverage for the entire unit are still available. On the multi-temp Vector 8600MT, basic warranty coverage for the remote evaporators has been extended to 3 years/6,000 hours, triple the warranty of prior remote evaporators. www.transicold.carrier.com

Making a list

I

In the spirit of countdowns and resolutions (that rarely last) for the new year, I’m going out on a limb to make some predictions for the next 12 months. They will descend in order in keeping with the tradition of top 10 lists, but they are not ranked according to the likelihood of them happening or not happening. So, here are my top 10 predictions for 2015: 10. FMCSA will A few wishes recognize the flaws in the SMS methodology, to improve the so CSA scores will no longer be viewable by tire industry the public. 9. EPA will acknowledge that the bar for SmartWay-approved new truck tires is too low, so they set more stringent criteria for the designation. Under the new program, only a handful of tires from major manufacturers qualify. 8. The intermodal industry finally realizes that tubetype tires on multi-piece rims are not worth the risk. Rail and steamship lines collectively agree to phase them out over the next few years with total elimination by 2020. 7. Drivers get fed up with flat tires and start using air gauges to check the inflation pressure during every pretrip inspection. Fleets are so happy with the cost improvements that they agree to split the savings in the form of a bonus issued to every driver who uses a gauge. 6. Wheel refinishers develop a set of standards that they use to create a premium designation. Refinished wheels with the “seal of approval” are inspected at a higher level and have a finish that rivals the performance of new wheels. 5. Fleets agree to a national torque check program where drivers can get fasteners checked for the proper torque after wheel service at one of thousands of autho-

rized torque check centers. Loose wheels and wheel-offs are drastically reduced, saving lives and money. 4. There’s a major breakthrough in research to develop alternatives to natural rubber and the stress on the global supply is eliminated. The natural rubber cartel agrees to increase production, causing new tire and retread prices to fall. 3. Tire companies take the savings from lower natural rubber prices and agree to include an RFID tag on every truck tire. Fleets rejoice at the opportunity to develop tracking programs that can easily measure tire and retread performance, not to mention inflation pressure maintenance. 2. The trucking industry unites to implement a plan for TPMS that will make most of the nation’s fleet compliant by 2020. Sensors are utilized for trucks and tractors while trailers have the option of sensors or ATIS. 1. Fleets recognize that truck tire and wheel service should be left to the professionals who are properly trained to follow industry guidelines and procedures. Companies with in-house technicians provide their employees with the proper training, while those who outsource their tire maintenance only use vendors who can prove their employees are qualified. For the first time in the history of trucks, there are no fatalities related to the servicing of a tire in 2015. Math is not my strong point, so I cannot provide odds for my predictions. And to be honest, I would be surprised if even one of them were to come true because they all represent a serious departure from the current state of the industry. But the beginning of a new year is always full of hope, so it’s my turn to play optimist. AT

Small carriers andTCA TCA president Brad Bentley talks about organizational goals, how smaller carriers can benefit

n October 2014, the Truckload Carriers Assn. named Brad Bentley president, succeeding Chris Burruss, who resigned on June 26, 2014. Bentley previously served as co-chair of the Image and Communication Policy Committee. He is also a member of the board Brad Bentley of directors as well as the Recruitment and Retention Human Resources Committee. Bentley helped formalize TCA’s partnership with Wreaths Across America and promoted the Highway Angel program. He is active in the Commer-

cial Vehicle Training Assns.’ Marketing Committee and the American Trucking Assns.’ Communications and Image Policy Committee. Bentley has 26 years of experience in trucking-related publishing, writing, and sales. American Trucker had the opportunity to sit down with Bentley and discuss TCA’s plans moving forward into 2015 and how the organization will be available to help small trucking companies. What is the mission of the Truckload Carriers Assn.? Our mission is to address education, best practices, networking, image, safety awareness, regulatory education, and advocacy as well as promote an environment that cre-

ates healthy and satisfied drivers in the truckload industry. As the president of TCA, what will be the major focus of the organization in 2015? We are in the midst of a threeyear strategic plan that follows our mission statement. Creating a plan is only half of the process, however, and it is my job to make sure it is successfully implemented. Despite having a lot of ideas for things I would like to implement at TCA in the future, I realize it is important for me to focus on our core competencies right now. Specifically, I would like to increase the participation in our educational programs and networking opportunities, and

[improve] the frequency of positive media messages about the trucking industry. I also want to help TCA develop a more grassroots approach to industry advocacy and see us become a true resource for drivers and fleet members regarding healthy lifestyle options. Where will TCA concentrate its educational efforts? Driver recruitment and retention, regulatory compliance, and professional development of carriers’ internal staff [are focus areas]. What plans do you have to engage the association’s members in joining this push for educating truckers? We are partnering with a TCA member to provide online driver training programs that carriers can use to train their drivers on a number of topics such as defensive driving, HOS and logbooks, CSA, cargo securement, vehicle inspection, drug and alcohol awareness, and wellness. What is TCA’s goal in providing greater knowledge on the business of trucking to truckers? TCA’s goal is to provide leadership that will increase members’ productivity, profitability and ability to provide superior service; to advocate on behalf of its members; and to enhance the truckload industry’s ability to provide safe, high-quality, reliable truckload transportation services to the shipping public. What is the Truckload Academy? TCA recognizes that trucking industry professionals are on the go and that their responsibilities change as the needs of their organization change. Also, these busy professionals need training that not only keeps up with them, but provides the training they need when

they need it. Truckload Academy is TCA’s education, training and professional development program that offers convenient and affordable courses through its Truckload Academy On-demand (TAO), its online learning platform; through Truckload Academy Live Learning, its webinar programs; and through Truckload Academy Certifications. Why should a carrier with fewer than 10 trucks join TCA? The micro-trucking group is a difficult group to reach because the executives are so darn busy running the company and usually don’t have the benefit of many employees to help with their operations. Often, under-10 truck fleets are still a husband-and-wife operation. When we do get their participation, these executives benefit from the vast networking opportunities with other trucking executives. I think the best opportunities are within our meetings and conventions, since that ability to network is invaluable. Many of our member trucking companies are very familycentric and have always been willing to share information—even with their competitors. You don’t find that in many industries. What types of programs and help are there at TCA for the small and micro-trucking companies to help them improve their business and safety performance? Our Truckload Academy Ondemand is a great resource for small to micro-trucking companies to obtain information on many trucking-related issues. These include employment law, improving your CSA score, and creating a winning safety program, to name a few. The best thing is that the Truckload Academy On-demand is available 24/7, so members can access these

educational webinars any time that is convenient for them. What would the annual TCA dues be for a small trucking company with five trucks grossing around $900,000 per year? If someone is interested in calculating their annual TCA dues, they can log onto www.duescalculator. com, enter their total truckload revenue from last year, and hit “Tab.” Using your example, the annual dues would only be $448. As TCA president, what are the three most exciting projects you’re looking forward to working on throughout the next year? I am looking forward to working on our health and wellness initiative because it potentially impacts lives. I am equally excited about our “Best Fleets To Drive For” program because it identifies who the innovators are and it is driven by the drivers. TCA will also be rolling out some certification programs for fleet managers, risk management, recruiting and retention, and so forth. What do you see as the greatest strengths you bring to TCA, coming from the truck publishing world? If there is one word that best describes the media world in the past few years, it is ‘change.’ Technology evolved for customers and readers to consume their content differently, and I think the trucking industry is similar. From my experience, TCA needs to connect with and engage our members in new ways. I plan to lead us in that direction in 2015. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. SELFDRIVING TRUCKS:

Future or By Jim Mele, editorial director

s the self-driving truck this century’s flying car, or is it a true technological breakthrough that will transform the lives of drivers and the operations of fleets that employ them? Tough question, and the answer depends on who you ask. Lawyers and legislators will certainly have a say in the future of self-driving trucks and other vehicles on our roadways. And some thorny issues around drivers themselves will also need to be addressed if we’re ever going to realize the promise. But when it comes to the technology, we pretty

18 American Trucker/January 2015

much have the answer already. Before we get to that answer, though, we need some definition. As with most complex new tech-

Much of the technology has been developed. So, what’s missing? nologies, there’s confusion over what’s actually meant by a self-driving truck, or what is more correctly called an autonomous truck by the engineering community.

What we’re really talking about is a group of technologies that can be combined in a variety of ways to create levels of automation that relieve a driver of different responsibilities under a wide range of circumstances. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) formally divides vehicle automation into five levels. NHTSA’s Level 0 is no automation at all, with the auto or truck driver in complete and sole control of the vehicle at all times. Level 1 adds automation for specific control functions, with technologies such as electronic stability control or ABS. Level 2 extends that by combining two or more of those systems

fantasy? to take over control from the driver in specific situations. NHTSA’s example of a Level 2 vehicle is one where adaptive cruise control is combined with a lane sensing system to keep it centered in its lane and traveling at the same speed as the vehicle in front of it.

THE NEXT LEVEL What most of us would think of as a self-driving truck is classified as Level 3 by NHTSA, or what it calls “limited self-driving automation.” At Level 3, a driver could turn over full control of the vehicle under the right conditions for long periods of time. The vehicle monitors conditions around it and when necessary

turns control back to the driver, who is always available. Trucks that could drive themselves on highways either alone or in a platoon would be considered Level 3 vehicles. A fully autonomous, or Level 4, vehicle would be able to initiate and complete an entire trip without any driver input beyond entering navigation waypoints or a destination. Once directed to a destination, the Level 4 truck could even operate without anyone aboard. From this perspective, the selfdriving truck isn’t that always-inthe-future flying car, at least not at Level 3. In fact, most of the foundation technologies are already available in production trucks, or will be

within the year. And the final pieces needed to create the Level 3 autonomous truck are already well along in the development stage. “What I see is evolution, not revolution,” says Alan Korn, director of advanced brake system integration for Meritor Wabco. Early stages in that evolution could be considered the introduction of active safety systems like stability control and ABS, technologies that make control decisions solely on vehicle conditions. The first truly “big stepping stone” in the evolution of a self-driving truck was the introduction of heavy-truck collision mitigation systems like Meritor Wabco’s OnGuard and Bendix’s Wingman “because they make

cover story control decisions based on both the vehicle and the environment,” says Korn. “Taking control [of the truck] based on what’s outside the truck was, for me, a very large step technology-wise.”

WORKING TOGETHER The next steps in Korn’s evolutionary vision involve integration. First, in the very near future, discrete technologies like lane departure warning, smart cruise control and blind-spot detection will be integrated to give the driver 360 deg. vision of the entire tractor and trailer. That will help the driver reduce accidents but still leave them in full control of the vehicle. Fusing all that data with powerful processors and software would then allow automation of common control decisions, taking yet another major step toward the Level 3 self-driving truck, he believes. With such data fusion in place, technology can begin to develop trucks that can drive themselves for periods of time. According to Korn, the key is that such technology would have to outperform a human driver in terms of safety. Truck fatality numbers have dropped to below 1.5 for every million miles traveled, he points out. “Subtract the numbers that were not the truck driver’s fault, which would be the majority, and the technology would have to better that number before we could move to autonomous,” he says. “That’s quite a challenge.” Fusion of vision technologies is also seen by T.J. Thomas as the next key step in development of the selfdriving truck. Thomas, director of marketing and customer solutions for the Control Group at Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems, explains that the radar used in smart cruise control and blind-spot warning systems identifies the speed and distance of moving objects well, while the cameras used for lane de-

Electronic stability control represented a major advance in autonomous truck systems. tection can identify the things they see but aren’t ideal for judging relative speed. Using processors to fuse those two data streams is critical to making the reliable control decisions needed for even limited autonomous operation. Add in high-speed information from other vehicles on the road and perhaps the road infrastructure itself, and you face “what is probably the biggest challenge in terms of decision making for an autonomous vehicle—being able to gather and meld all that data,” says Jim Szudy, engineering manager for vehicle systems at Bendix. Since trucks carry systems from a variety of suppliers, there need to be standards and protocols for coordinating that information. “Making a left turn is easy, but what if there’s an emergency vehicle coming down the road, and the truck needs to make a decision?” Szudy says. “Some way to process all that data and use it to make the right decisions all the time is one of the biggest things still to be developed.”

READY AND WAITING While development work on information processing is still in the early stages, the systems needed to actually control a truck’s movements without driver input are already largely in production or will be within the next year or so.

Roughly 75% of the technology needed to produce a Level 3 selfdriving truck “is already in place,” according to Dennis Mooney, group vice president of global product development at Navistar. Like others involved in autonomous truck projects, he identifies the fusion of camera and radar information as the next step. “We’re already seeing it on some luxury cars,” Mooney says. “It lets us recognize objects that we couldn’t in the past, things like road signs and both moving and stationary objects. That keeps the vehicle from reacting to things it shouldn’t react to.” Another technology already working its way into production trucks is predictive abilities for control systems, according to Mooney. The latest automated mechanical transmissions not only keep the truck in the right gear, but by using 3D maps and other advanced location information can predict the shifts required for maximum fuel economy based on the terrain ahead. Autonomous systems that can anticipate road and traffic conditions would not only improve safety, but also make it possible to platoon trucks for better fuel economy, allowing a lead driver to perform steering, braking and other functions for trucks operating autonomously behind. “With lane detection warning al-

cover story developed a new architecture to merge those systems and added a high-capacity computer to get everything done in the appropriate way,” Zeilinger says. In its current state, he explains, the Future Truck 2025 can operate on a highway in “a highly automated mode,” though changing lanes or getting on and off the highway are still done under the driver’s control.

YES AND NO Autonomous trucks will change drivers’ responsibilities, but not eliminate the job. The next step is steering control, which he believes can be achieved with Volvo’s current electronically assisted steering system. “We already let that system take over [limited] steering in high crosswinds.” One more formidable challenge is the handoff of control from the autonomous systems back to the driver. “How do you figure out that the driver has taken over control again? How does the system detect that the driver is there and conscious?” Almqvist says. Despite all the technological progress, Almqvist isn’t convinced that the autonomous truck is about to take itself down the road anytime soon. “I guess I’m too much of a technician,” he says. “Things do happen quickly, but we’re talking about big objects moving around out there. On restricted highways, maybe, but mix in other traffic and drivers and you have much more complexity to take into account.”

A DECADE AWAY One OEM with a more aggressive view on the arrival of the selfdriving truck is Daimler Trucks. With great fanfare earlier this year, it unveiled a concept vehicle it calls Future Truck 2025 by having the tractor-trailer combination drive

22 American Trucker/January 2015

itself into a hangar filled with media as Daimler Trucks head Wolfgang Bernhard sat in the driver’s seat reading a newspaper. Three months earlier, the company had autonomously run the first version of its Future Truck at speeds up to 80 km/hr. with simulated traffic on a German motorway. The prototype is built on a current Mercedes-Benz Actros chassis fitted with both current production advanced systems and others still in the development stage. A radically new cab and interior was also crafted to up the “wow” factor at truck shows and other events. The project truck carries the third generation of Daimler’s active brake assist with full braking functions, as well as its current lane keeping assist, blind spot assist, attention assist, and predictive powertrain control. All of those systems but the blind spot assist are already in production, and the blind spot assist will be brought to market soon, according to Martin Zeilinger, head of advanced engineering for Daimler Trucks. Autonomous steering, which is not in production, was achieved by replacing the standard ZF hydraulic steering gear with an “electronically supported” one from ZF, “then we

Delivering a fully self-driving truck to the marketplace in 10 years, or even 20, probably isn’t realistic, especially when you take into account legislative and infrastructure hurdles still to be addressed, says Zeilinger. “But the reality is we have a lot of the technology behind us. Twenty years ago, the driver was responsible for everything—fuel economy, appropriate shifting, safety, hours on duty. Now we have technically appropriate solutions to help the driver with those things, and soon we’ll be adding automated braking. It makes things easier for the driver. “A good truck driver sees, hears and relies on their experience and then decides what to do, but they can also have a weak second,” says Zeilinger. “Even full electronics can’t have enough inputs to equal that driver’s experience, but it’s also really reliable and doesn’t have that weak second. The best thing for safety and economical operation is a combination of the two.” So, the answer to our original question is both yes and no. We’re on a steady technology course that sooner rather than later will bring us a self-driving truck. But the true sweet spot for truck fleets may be stopping short of NHTSA’s Level 4 full autonomy and instead give us trucks with self-driving attributes that complement rather than replace drivers. Spec’d to save MANAGER: Silas Fuller TITLE: Operations manager COMPANY: Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland OPERATION: Delivering meals to homebound senior citizens and other folks in need via a fleet of 28 vehicles

W

hen you work for a charity organization, every dollar saved is a dollar that can be turned over to provide more services. In the case of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, though, vehicle needs ate up precious operational dollars. “The mission of Meals on Wheels is to keep aging people living independently at home, and we do that by providing home-delivered nutritious meals,” explains Stephanie Archer-Smith, executive director for the nonprofit. “The more efficient

our vehicles are, the more meals we can serve to homebound individuals.” The age of the Meals on Wheels fleet, which numbers 28 vehicles including vans and pickup trucks with specially constructed stainless steel food delivery bodies, posed one of the bigger problems for Silas Fuller, the charity group’s operations manager. The older models not only burned more fuel but broke down more frequently. So, Fuller was faced with several tasks: modernize the fleet, lower operating costs, and increase vehicle uptime.

F

the van can be connected to electric shore power. This means that the vehicle’s engine is no longer needed to cool or heat the van’s interior sections, saving fuel and reducing engine wear and tear. “That’s the biggest part of the maintenance savings with the new vans right there,” he notes, pointing out that by moving to the new spec, Meals on Wheels cut its fuel and maintenance expenses 8%. “Eliminating engine idling really saves on maintenance in the long term,” Zambroski stresses. He adds that it took about a month to settle on the new specs, which were developed using information from both the fleet’s operation and Element’s suppliers. “The other benefit is that the lighter weight of this solution helps extend the geographical range of the vehicle as well,” he says. In the end, Meals on Wheels redirected the savings towards its mission of preparing and delivering over 800,000 meals a year. With the savings, the organization has been able to deliver an additional 1,000 meals a month. “That money means more meals on the street and more miles we can cover to deliver them,” says Jan Heifner, —SEAN KILCARR CFO of the charity.

PROBLEM

uller and Meals on Wheels turned to Element Fleet Management (formerly PHH Arval) to come up with a better vehicle specification aimed at attaining such savings. The first step involved switching to a vehicle lease model. This saved capital dollars and allowed the charity to obtain four new vehicles per year versus the two per year under its direct ownership strategy. Rich Zambroski, Element’s truck excellence manager, then stepped in with a brand new van spec with plug-in shore power capability to help reduce both fuel use and engine wear and tear. Zambroski tapped Sub Zero Insulation & Refrigeration Technologies in New York, one of Element’s suppliers, to craft a split configuration interior for the van using Ford E-Series vans as a base platform. The part nearest the driver contains the refrigerated section. A Thermo King V-200 reefer unit mounted to the vehicle’s roof keeps that area cool. The rear of the vehicle features an oven, powered by auxiliary power, for heating meals. Zambroski adds that both the hot and cold zones of

Driven to success Multipronged approach gives Oakley a leg up when it comes to safety, driver retention and customer service

At Oakley Transport, it’s all about meeting a number of goals simultaneously. “We’re focused on ensuring dependability and low cost per mile while retaining drivers, expanding business, and operating one of the most productive and safest tanker fleets in the industry,” says COO Johnnie James. Lake Wales, FL-based Oakley Transport is a transportation services provider. From terminals and facilities in several states, the company fields a fleet of more than 350 Volvo tractors and 550 Brenner, Walker and Polar stainless steel, 6,500- to 7,500-gal. food-grade liquid bulk, single compartment tank trailers. Moving forward toward meeting all of its objectives, Oakley Transport’s three-year plan includes replacing all of its tractors. New in the fleet are Volvo VNLs with the OEM’s D13 engines and I-Shift automated mechanical transmissions. Some units feature larger sleepers for longhaul drivers. “With a driver shortage hitting the industry head on, we’re being proactive in addressing driver

needs,” James states. “Our new Volvos have a large refrigerator, flat screen TV hookup, microwave connections, and factory-installed shore power systems and APUs to provide comfort.” Peter J. Nativo, director of maintenance, says that to boost payload capacity, Oakley Transport is reducing vehicle weight without compromising durability or safety. “We had some trailers built with a stainless steel material called Lean Duplex that can be used to create thinner walls because it’s a harder compound,” he explains. “The weight savings was 700 lbs. per trailer. We also cut tractor weight by about 100 lbs. with 12-in. sliding fifth wheels, and we spec’d Hendrickson Intraax AAT air ride suspensions on new trailers, aluminum wheels, air tanks and other lightweight items.” Fuel-saving initiatives at Oakley Transport are carried out by a fuel manager whose primary job is to look at the fleet’s miles per gallon and find ways to optimize efficiency. While average idle time in the operation is in the single digits, Nativo says

fuel economy is up with 2012 and newer model engines. Model-year 2012 tractors are getting 7.04 mpg compared to 6.5 mpg for the units they replaced, saving over $250,000 in fuel costs for those trucks during their first year in the fleet. Between 2013 and 2014, the company added 185 more units with new engines. Oakley is also outfitting tractors with Carrier Comfort Pro auxiliary power units. “The ROI on the APUs depends on the price of fuel,” Nativo explains. “At about $3.80 a gallon, the savings are $1,000 a month and the payback is about one year. With fuel prices down to $3.18 a gallon on average, the ROI is a bit longer, or about 13 months.” The emphasis on safety at Oakley Transport is seen in several ways. “We just purchased a training simulator and set up a program for all new and existing drivers that is customized for our fleet,” James says. “It cost us over $150,000, but we’re expecting a quick ROI from helping drivers react effectively to the hazards they encounter every day.” Specs at Oakley Transport also call for the Bendix Wingman Active Cruise with Braking system on tractors and Meritor Wabco RSSplus (roll stability support) systems on trailers. “We’ve had 25 Wingman systems since early [2014] and based on their performance made the decision to have our latest 100 tractors currently being built with the same system,” Nativo says. “Their value is proven by some reduced insurance rates and acceptance by drivers.” At Oakley Transport, nothing is being left to chance when it comes to taking advantage of opportunities to save costs, improve productivity, and enhance safety. I plan a bit ahead on my PM service, factoring in that I may have to pass it by due to a long line.

BY TIMOTHY BRADY

What type of freight do you haul? I haul precast concrete forms, that is, wall panels, double T’s and girders. Ninety percent of my loads are over-dimensional, averaging 12 to 14 ft. wide and 60 to 84 ft. long. The average piece weight is 58,000 lbs.

Are there regularly scheduled routes or is it on-demand pickup and delivery? My locations vary by jobsite. Typically, we haul within Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

What about maintenance/repairs to minimize downtime?

Owner-operator Owner: Rebekah Meadows Location: Richmond, VA Meadows pulls flatbed loads for JGR Inc. She has been in trucking for 15 years and currently operates a 2007 Peterbilt 379 with midroof sleeper powered by a Cat C15 500-hp. engine with 10-speed transmission that is being converted to a 13-speed.

I always do a thorough pretrip on my truck before I leave each day. OTR, I do the same before I leave my location. When I have downtime at home, either on weekends or during vacations, I go over my truck completely, checking for anything that may need to be fi xed or will need replacing.

What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance?

How do you handle maintenance and minor repairs? I do as much as I possibly can on my own—wiring, brake adjustments, clutch adjustments, lights, air lines and other minor repairs. I stay on top of preventive maintenance for my truck. I routinely grease it myself and get full PM service at Speedco.

How do you handle major repairs? It just depends on how major the repair is. If it’s something that can be done at home with assistance, and parts are available, it’s fixed here. For major motor or transmission issues, I use Eddie’s Truck Service in Richmond, VA, a local shop that specializes in Cat motors.

I do preventive maintenance on the truck within 20,000 mi., which is about the same as the manufacturer requirements.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires? Which brand? I do not run retreads. I prefer Michelin XDA5. To ensure longevity, always check your tire pressure; low inflation can wear faster as can over-inflation. I [try to] avoid hitting curbs and driving over anything. We’re always on a job site and there’s usually debris and metal on the ground. It’s not uncommon for me to get out and scan the ground before I back up to the crane or any other spot to stage or drop.

Do you stock parts for your truck or purchase as needed? What three challenges do you face with your maintenance/ repair program? How do you resolve each? The first major challenge is having the money for repairs. I do have an escrow account set up for repairs if needed. The second is not having a covered area in which to work on the truck. The weather has no mercy; I lay down cardboard when I need to be on the ground. Lastly, because I use Speedco for my PM services, sometimes it’s not convenient to wait in a long line. I cannot go under a load, so I have to wait until [I am empty] on my return trip.

Air and coolant filters A s fiber technology has improved, so has the ability to design and build better filters for heavy-duty diesel engines, notes John Gaither, director of heavy-duty engineering at Luberfiner. “The goal of filter designers is to catch particles without compromising filtration performance,” he says. “The fiber, the makeup of the paper that is in the filter, can provide for balance between the right amount of restriction and longer filter life. Filters that perform effectively protect engines, and longer intervals between filter changes reduce [costs].” Gaither explains that Luber-finer’s MXM Force air filters include MicroGold fiber technology that employs fibers that are smaller in diameter to provide more filtration area than standard filters. Cummins Filtration’s Fleetguard air filters feature a “direct flow” design and utilize NanoNet media that the company says extends time between service intervals. Offered are standard and custom plastic and metal air cleaners in a variety of types, shapes and sizes. Air filter elements are offered in several styles, including the Magmum RS and OptiAir lines. The design of Donaldson Blue Air Filters with UltraWeb media, according to the manufacturer, allows less contaminant to pass through compared to cellulose air filters through the use of smaller interfiber spaces to hold more submicron contaminant. The high holding capacity promotes longer filter life. Donald Chilton, vice president, product management at WIX Filters, says the company continues to invest in different air filter media types. “It only takes eight ounces of dirt to destroy a heavy-duty engine, making filter media the key to having the right product,” he says. WIX heavy-duty air filters feature embossed pleats and pleat stabilization beads that help the filter trap more dirt. The filters also have greater media surface area to stop more contaminants while maintaining low air flow restriction. Baldwin Filters has developed more than 30 “extreme performance” heavy-duty air filters, and will be adding to the product line that utilizes the company’s proprietary ProTura nanofiber technology. “With ProTura media,”

Technology is helping filters keep engines running cleaner

Englund explains, “fine contaminant particles load on the media surface rather than penetrating deeper, forming a ‘cake’ of contaminant on the media surface that from normal vibration falls to the bottom of the housing on the dirty side of the filter. More submicron particles then collect on the filter surface and the process is repeated.” The Racor division of Parker Hannifin Corp. makes a variety of air cleaner housings and filters. Its line of ECO Series spin-on disposable air cleaners includes the ECO II model with water-resistant media and the ECO III line for 250- to 400-hp. engines. More than 40% of engine problems originate in the cooling system, relates Lauren Lewis, product development engineer of coolant and chemical technology, Cummins Filtration. “Engine coolant can contain various contaminants that are harmful to cooling system components. Coolant filters are a reliable and effective FOR MORE INFORMATION, way to remove harmful particles and help prevent VISIT THESE WEBSITES: erosion, damage, leakage Baldwin Filters www.baldwinfilter.com and deposits.” Donaldson Blue coolant filters use Synteq media Cummins Filtration to remove fine contami- www.cumminsfiltration.com nants. A new line of heavyduty coolant filters recently Fram Heavy Duty Filters introduced by the Penray www.framheavyduty.com Companies features fiberglass-based filtering media Luber-finer incorporated into a triple- www.luberfiner.com layer design consisting of a structural steel screen with Parker Hannifin an epoxy coating wrapped www.parker.com/filtration in a non-woven sheet of polyester.
