Future is now

T

“The future’s so bright, you gotta wear shades.” If you’re old enough to know the Timbuk3 song or video, and if you’re still trucking, you’re probably enjoying the nice career that you’ve made for yourself. The question—one I hear routinely from long-time owner-operators—is whether or not you’re a dinosaur, a species on the verge of extinction. Many true pros are understandably frustrated: regulation, high fuel costs, expensive equipment and, most New editor critically, stagnant rates. And a lot of folks have quit, and who Kevin Jones sees could blame ’em? Of course, more than a have come back to trucking because, opportunity for few well, that’s what they do. trucking pros There’s going to be even more opportunity for those owner-ops and small fleets who are still rolling, who have managed to pay the bills, who have done things better than most, and who have grown to understand this great business. As the new editor of American Trucker, my goal isn’t to tell you how to do things right—I’m not out there every day hauling freight. But I am looking at the world—at equipment, the economy, government policy, technology—from the perspective of truckers. So drop me a line anytime or, even better, introduce yourself if you see me wandering around a truck stop with a notebook. That’s how I learn what’s truly important. “Things are going great, and they’re only getting better!” AT

Navistar boosts ProStar fuel economy

T

ruck and engine maker Navistar is rolling out a new fuel efficiency package for its International ProStar highway tractor dubbed the ProStar ES (efficiency specification). The ProStar ES comes with a “full aerodynamic package” combined with optimized drivetrain and low rolling resistance tires. Jodi Presswood, vice president of the heavy-duty truck product line, said the ProStar ES package offers up to 11% better fuel economy versus a 2010 ProStar model equipped with a 13L MaxxForce engine and 10-speed manual transmission. “The ProStar ES represents the next level of fuel efficiency,” he explained. “We’re calling this an ‘ecosystem,’ if you will, to enable the most fuel efficiency possible.” Presswood added that pricing is based on the combination of features a customer selects. “But it’s more than just a product spec,” he stressed. “This is not a static offering; what we’re rolling out...is what’s best available today. We’ll be continually upgrading this spec.” He also noted that a three-year subscription to Navistar’s OnCommand system is part of the ProStar ES package. The OEM’s predictive diagnostic system includes a portal that monitors vehicle performance in real-time to ensure maximum operating efficiency. Presswood also said that Navistar’s performance engineering team, which developed the ProStar ES, can be enlisted to help further optimize the package with customer-specific

The ProStar ES offers up to 11% better fuel economy vs. the previous model. specifications based on vehicle application and duty cycle. Aaron Peterson, Navistar’s chief performance engineer, noted that the ProStar ES package addresses the top three areas of highway tractor operation where fuel economy losses are the largest: aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, and engine mechanical losses. Component offerings being made available with the ProStar ES package include: T Eaton-Cummins SmartAdvantage powertrain, which pairs the 15L Cummins ISX15 with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission (AMT), will provide a 3 to 6% fuel efficiency improvement. T Navistar proprietary 13L N-13 engine, which is offered with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed AMT, will deliver a 3 to 6% fuel economy boost. T Low rolling resistance tires will be offered. T Several axle configurations, including two 6x4 models—the Meritor 14X and Dana AdvanTek 40—along with the Meritor FUELite 6x2 model, will be offered. www.internationaltrucks.com

trucking insights

Filling up with LTL freight

I

f you are a truckload carrier running less-than-full trailers, then consider picking up less-than-truckload shipments. Called asset utilization, this type of setup lets you maximize the space on your trailers. If the load in your trailer has not met its maximum gross weight and there is floor space available, you might be able to fill the gap in the trailer with a partial load. Most partials pay a higher rate per CWT (centum hundred weight) of cubic space than the rest of a truckload, and the money it adds to the overall revenue can increase your bottom line significantly. To find these LTL loads or partials, you can utilize a load board or check with your list of freight brokers whenever you have space available. To calculate a rate, take your standard truckload rate and divide it by the total linear feet on your trailer floor. Then determine how many feet the partial load will require. Consider that a 15-ft. partial load in a 53-ft. trailer takes up 28% of the floor space. Multiply your truckload rate for the time and distance required for the load by 28%. Then add a partial surcharge of 20%. For example, a $3,000 truckload rate times 28% equals $840, plus 20% ($168) equals a total partial rate of $1,008. Voila! Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Solutions in search of problems Electronic logs, speed limiters among items on a “hectic” FMCSA 2015 calendar

T

he year 2015 looks to be a busy one for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), both in terms of the number of items on the regulatory agenda and in their significance to the trucking industry. Among the highlights are a revamping of the way carrier safety is evaluated and rated, an electronic logging mandate, a speed limiter requirement, a drug and alcohol testing database, possible changes to insurance minimums, and driver coercion protection. American Trucker spoke recently with Ryan Bowley, director of government affairs for the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. (OOIDA), about issues truckers should be aware of. High on the OOIDA list is FMCSA’s reconsideration of minimum levels of financial responsibility for carriers, including liability coverage. Those levels are currently at $750,000. Bowley calls the effort “a solution in search of a problem.” “Nowhere have I ever seen an agency move forward with addressing a requirement that has a 99.9% success rate,” Bowley said. “Owneroperators, small-business truckers, everyone across the industry—unless you’re the biggest of the big fleets—should be watching, be engaged and be concerned about the impact an increase would have.” The electronic log rulemaking is “always a hot one” for OOIDA, which successfully challenged the previous rule in court by arguing that the regulation did not address driver harassment.

6 American Trucker/February 2015

“The agency has put the cart before the horse,” Bowley said. “The [ELD] supplemental notice came out before FMCSA had even gone out on the street with their driver harassment survey. We also had a lot of problems with the survey when it came out and the analysis. It was typical FMCSA science: There were a lot of holes. We don’t think they addressed a lot of

our concerns or the court’s concerns over driver harassment.” Additionally, the harassment objection was just one among many in the OOIDA case—and it was sufficient for the court to throw the rule out. But the association believes a number of its other issues were valid, Bowley explained, and those are still “live.” He declined, however, to go into detail and discuss OOIDA’s plans as the ELD rules move forward. As for a speed limiter regulation, OOIDA contends a resulting increase in speed differentials between heavy trucks and other traffic will have a negative impact on safety. “Both FMCSA and NHTSA haven’t really looked at the other side of the coin,” Bowley said. As does American Trucking Assns.,

OOIDA questions moving forward with a new safety rating system based on CSA and the “well documented” problems with it. “It’s not just the methodology of CSA,” Bowley said. “You’ve got a system that takes into consideration over 750 different regulatory violations, and fewer than 20 of those have a connection to crash propensity. We really need to take a good hard look at the body of regulations to determine which have a causal relation to crashes—not just a correlation.” One area of federal regulation that OOIDA “very, very much” supports is the development of entry-level driver training standards, which has languished at FMCSA for years despite a mandate from Congress. The agency did initiate a negotiated rulemaking in late 2014, meaning that the drafting and review process would be shortened if a committee of stakeholders can agree on what those standards should include. “At least within some levels of the agency, and certainly across the industry, there’s anxiousness to get moving on this,” Bowley said. “But we need to make sure it’s done in a deliberate manner that assures there’s good input from all sides and we actually get a rule that makes an impact, not just something that lets you check a few boxes and that counts as driver training.” And these are just the items at the top of the list that owner-ops and small fleets need to pay attention to. This combination also allows for additional transmission PTO clearance, which is a plus especially for construction applica-

tions,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. The cabovers can be spec’d with the PX-7 engine at a new top rating of 260 hp. and 660 lbs.-ft. of torque in addition to a new 200 hp. and 520 lbs.-ft. torque rating. The standard engine rating is 220 hp. with 520 lbs.-ft. of torque mated to an Allison 5-speed transmission. Both models come with 22.5-in. tire and wheel packages. A 19.5-in. tire and wheel option is also available for the K270. A standard air-ride driver’s seat and two-person bench seating is standard for each model. The single-seat option is available as well. Wheelbases range from 142 to 242 in. in 12-in. increments. www.kenworth.com

Lighter tanks unveiled

A

gility Fuel Systems said it has produced a new behind-thecab compressed natural gas fuel system that has a higher capacity and lighter weight. The updated system holds 160 DGE (up from 155 DGE) and weighs 500 lbs. less than the previous model. The higher capacity and lighter cylinders of the new system were designed by Agility Hexagon, a joint venture of Agility Fuel Systems and Hexagon Lincoln. The system utilizes four of the newly designed cylinders, for a total weight of only 2,050 lbs., and requires only 311/4 in. of frame rail space. Depending on application, the system can deliver a driving range of more than 600 mi. before refueling. While it serves as a stand-alone

system, it can also be packaged with 126 DGE side-mounted systems for a total capacity of 286 DGE and a range in excess of 1,100 mi. The Type 4 cylinders, which are plastic-lined and constructed with carbon fiber, are more than 70% lighter than steel tanks and not subject to corrosion. Both fast- and time-fill receptacles are easily accessible and come complete with an easy-to-read highpressure gauge for accurate filling. Area pressure relief devices monitor a larger area than “point” pressure relief devices. The system can be mounted inside existing fairings to maintain the truck’s aerodynamic profile. www.agilityfuelsystems.com

FMCSA seeks more insurance coverage Thinkstock

T

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is making a long-awaited move to seek increased liability coverage for trucking operators via a notice of proposed rulemaking. A similar FMCSA effort launched earlier last year came to naught after the House of Representatives voted back in June to prevent the agency from boosting the minimum level of financial responsibility for motor carriers above the current $750,000 requirement—a requirement that’s been unchanged since 1982. In many ways, FMCSA is actually playing catch-up in terms of carrier insurance levels demanded by shippers and brokers, Robert Moseley Jr., chairman of transportation practice at the law firm of Smith Moore Leatherwood, told American Trucker. “The main driver of higher insurance amounts required of trucking companies is not FMCSA [rules]; it’s the freight contracts,” he explained. “Most shipper and broker [freight] contracts require $1 million in coverage, and they’ve required that for a long time.” Yet Moseley emphasized that a regulation mandating higher insurance coverage levels for motor carriers will most likely raise insurance costs across the board—even for carriers that maintain insurance coverage levels well beyond the $1 million level. “Let’s say you have $2 million in overall coverage,” he said. “You’ll have to pay a higher premium for that [coverage amount] under the

An increase in insurance liability minimums could cost trucking companies thousands of dollars more per year. proposed FMCSA rules because now the cost of your ‘primary’ insurance is going up as it is being raised from $750,000 to $1 million, or whatever level FMCSA settles on.” He added that trucking companies will most likely seek to recoup increased insurance costs through higher freight rates. Moseley noted that in 25 years of practice, he’s only dealt with “a handful” of cases where carriers had to pay plaintiffs the full amount of their insurance coverage; however, he stressed that coverage exceeding industry minimums is usually the wisest option. “If you operate around 10 trucks, you can get away with maybe $1 million in coverage,” he explained. “But once you reach 40 or 50 trucks, you’ve got large enough accounts receivables to make you a big target.” As part of a renewed effort to propose changes to current trucking insurance rules, FMCSA said it is now soliciting information based on 26 questions regarding “financial responsibility.”

In 2013, cargo-theft activity “concentrated in the fourth quarter with a cumulative 242 incidents,” according to a white paper released by logistics-security provider FreightWatch International titled “Combatting Cargo Theft—The Secret Sauce Is Common Sense.” The paper reports a “significant rise in driver theft incidents.” FreightWatch defines those as crimes that involve direct theft by a driver or a driver’s voluntary collusion or complicity as well as those in which a “deceptive criminal” poses as a driver. “Typically a crime of opportunity, thefts by drivers fluctuate in volume year-toyear,” pointed out the paper’s author, Eric Kready, manager of FreightWatch’s Supply Chain Intelligence Center. “However, this method reached an all-time high in 2013, with a 76% increase over 2012 and a 389% increase over 2011.” Kready contends that this growing trend—surreptitious drivers—warrants acute awareness. Limitations on available carriers regularly necessitate brokering as well as re-brokering to the second, third, and sometimes fourth order. Kready advised adhering to the “10 fundamentals of logistics security.” They are: T Background investigations T Facility preparedness T Security-awareness training T Keep current on theft trends T Holiday awareness T In-transit security policy T Reduce the time loads are unattended T Route and lane variation T Covert tracking technology T Layered approach

emember the movie Ground Hog Day? Bill Murray played a TV meteorologist who loathed his job, but got stuck repeating the same day over and over until he learned what his mistakes were and learned how not to repeat them. So, you ask, what does this have to do with my trucking business? Well, we all have slumps in our lives, and the trucking business is not exempt. And a slump can be caused by many different things or events. A mid-winter slump is caused by too many weather-related delays that start taking a toll on both personnel and equipment. By the time we reach the month of February, we’re near the point of no return, wanting to just park everything until the ice and snow are gone. The cyclic seasonal slump happens at different times of the year for individual hauling segments. Typically, package delivery peaks from October through early January. By the time February begins, it’s almost like someone pulled the revenue rug out from under you.

business of trucking

The same can be said for hauling household goods, where peak months are May through September. For a mover, the month of January is tough. Most people don’t move during the cold and snowy winter months unless they absolutely must. However, the tow truck and recovery operation is extremely busy during those same winter months and again during the busy travel months of summer. An unexpected slump is usually caused by outside influences. It could be a labor strike at a plant out of which you haul, or a customer changes ownership or management and the new people handling shipping have their own list of carriers they use—and you’re not on that list. It could also be a disaster such as a fire, flood or earthquake that damages or destroys the physical plant to which you ship or deliver loads. Business slumps can happen for any number of reasons. So, what do you need to do to get past the slump? For starters, try to identify the cause, then develop a strategy to reverse the effects. Most downturns are temporary and will eventually reverse themselves, but don’t just ignore them. It’s all about maintaining your marketing focus and increasing your marketing efforts to find the needed freight. Every carrier needs to search constantly for new shippers even during the good times. You never know when that great customer you’ve depended on may make the dreaded “we no longer need your trucks” call. Having replacement shippers in the wings is crucial to maintaining your necessary revenue flow. Contact customers or shippers you’re currently

doing business with to check if they have additional tonnage to be hauled. Triple your sales and freight search efforts. The seasonal slump is a yearly occurrence, so you need to look for a business opportunity that’s seasonal and utilizes your equipment and/or your employees. One heavy-haul company owner I know who is based in the snowbelt uses his drivers in the winter to operate snow-removal equipment. He contracts with shopping malls, schools, and manufacturing plants. And the owner of a gravelhauling company with a fleet of dump trucks has equipped each of his 10-wheel dumps with a snowplow blade and salt spreaders.

TRAINING & REPAIR Use a seasonal downturn as an opportunity to do the major repairs and fixes to your equipment so it’s ready to go when business picks up again. It’s also a great time to review your business plan or train personnel. Now is the time to make the changes necessary to achieve business goals. Look at your cash flow and see how it can be improved. You can also step up sales efforts to ensure you have back-up shippers to protect against future slumps. Whether it’s a seasonal, cyclic downturn or an unexpected slump, a successful method to increase freight-hauling sales is the tried-and-true promotional deal. It’s great for creating a quick source of revenue in a short time. But make sure the hauling rate you provide is no lower than your operation’s break-even point (which needs to include all ex-

penses, including your salary). Develop a special offer for existing shippers. Set a short time period for them to take advantage of the promotion so they must take immediate action or forfeit the right to the deal. Contact each prospect and make them aware of the special offer; let them know this is in appreciation of their continued use of your hauling services. Contact recent freight prospects and tell them of this special onetime offer and encourage them to take advantage of your quality freight hauling services. Business downturns can be beneficial if handled correctly. They provide the time necessary to review past mistakes and adjust operations so they are not repeated. They give you the opportunity to try a new approach that may result in a more efficient way to operate. And for that mid-winter slump, I suggest planning to earn enough money during the previous 11 months so you can go to South Florida, or maybe even take the employees on a Caribbean Cruise in February. I know of a company owner who does this every year. His entire company is so fired up and ready to focus on the business for the next 11 months that their earnings exceed what they used to make in 12 months by more than enough to pay everyone’s salary, the fixed expenses of the company … and the cruise. Happy Groundhog Day. Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. Join Brady in the Trucking Business Community at www.truckersu.com.

Smartly cutting costs

D

During a recent trip to Germany for the Tire Technology for Commercial Vehicles Conference, I had the pleasure of meeting several European tire professionals. As the only American in attendance, I spent a lot of networking time explaining how the North American market operates. One aspect that the Europeans had a hard time understanding was the fact that large U.S. fleets could control Technologies which components (and tires) are specified on to cut tire costs new equipment. My presentation await adoption on truck tire labeling requirements raised a number of questions regarding the identification of lowrolling-resistance (LRR) tires and the popularity of the SmartWay program. Most attendees had never heard of SmartWay, so they were amazed at how a voluntary government-sponsored marketing campaign could launch the sudden popularity of LRR truck tires in the U.S. My reasoning for calling the popularity of LRR truck tires “sudden” is based on the fact that by my last count, the number of SmartWay-verified truck tires more than doubled between 2013 and 2014 while the number of companies that offer SmartWay tires almost tripled. But one area where truck tire technology remains at a standstill is radio frequency identification (RFID). My European counterparts were shocked that despite the millions of dollars in tires and retreads that large fleets manage, there is virtually no interest in RFID. And when we discussed potential cost benefits, it was even more difficult for them to understand why the North American truck tire market has not embraced the advantages of electronic tracking and recordkeeping. Equally puzzling was the lack of popularity for

traditional tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). I explained how automatic tire inflation systems (ATIS) have basically taken over the trailer market and why they will never do the same for trucks and tractors. Apparently, ATIS is not very popular in Europe because attendees were fascinated by the simplicity and effectiveness of using the air brake system to provide a constant supply of inflation pressure to the trailer tires through the axle. During the passenger and light truck Intelligent Tire Technology Conference held concurrently, I listened intently to discussions on the prospects for attaching TPMS sensors inside tires. And while it definitely represents a lot of “blue sky” thinking, I couldn’t help but wonder if it would revolutionize the truck tire industry. Putting sensors in tires allows manufacturers to use energy harvesters, so there is no battery life to worry about. And since the big fleets have so much influence on the manufacturers, it shouldn’t be difficult to convince the tire and truck companies to agree on a universal platform. Of course, cost would be a major factor, but if the sensor could last the lifespan of the new tire and subsequent retreads only to be removed and reattached to the next new tire in order to repeat the process, fleets would only have to buy them once. Surely, the return-oninvestment concerns would be completely eliminated if a TPMS sensor lasted forever. Undoubtedly, there will be a few sensors that bite the dust as the result of an impact that instantly deflates the tire, but the remaining run-flat scenarios could become a thing of the past with ATIS for the trailers and intelligent steer or drive tires that notify the driver when they are losing air. P

owertrain integration emerged as a focused truck marketing pitch several years ago, and the concept has quickly become an industry standard. Simply, it makes sense: link engines, transmissions, and even axles together into a single, seamless package and reap the benefits of fuel savings and improved vehicle performance. Mike Roeth, executive director of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), says that such integration also goes far beyond fuel savings and engine responsiveness. In his view, a range of benefits from maintenance-related cost savings to safety are possible as a result of increased integration. “Once you electronically connect the powertrain, the door is wide open to all sorts of future enhancements that you can gain [without] making mechanical changes to a truck,” Roeth explains. He points to the group’s recent work analyzing the potential benefits

of automated manual transmissions (AMTs). On the conservative side, fuel savings of 1% to 3% are possible; however, Roeth says there is potential for additional savings because the electronics underpinning the AMT can generate benefits when integrated with electronics within the truck’s engine, axles, and other systems. “What we’re finding is that AMTs are many times an ‘enabler’ for greater fuel savings, as they are integrated with the truck’s other systems,” he says. “It’s like buying a smartphone to get better cell phone capability and then realizing it can do a lot more like surf the web and access email.” Brad Williamson, manager of powertrain marketing for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), notes that powertrain integration development must include a more holistic view of single-system capability. “In the past, the electronics would be combined but never developed together,” he explains. “Today, integration means understanding what the end goal of the system is and beginning development with that end in mind. It is also looking at the entire system—engine, axle, transmission, driveline, truck, etc.—and developing a truly integrated [package] that meets drivers’ needs for performance and owners’ needs for profitability

and uptime.” The safety aspect comes into play with systems like Detroit Assurance, which offers active brake assist and adaptive cruise control by integrating a truck’s brakes, radar and sensor technology with Detroit-branded engines and transmissions. “It’s really about the feel, the smoothness, and how we can better integrate the intelligent controls with the truck,” explains Williamson. “That’s the main piece.” It’s important not to forget the back-end benefits of powertrain integration when it comes to warranty coverage, maintenance service and parts support, he adds. “[Integration] is really about looking at the entire truck ownership experience and making it a better product for the customers’ ownership life,” Williamson says. “What that also does for customers is make the dealer a true one-stop shop for all things integrated. This eliminates the need to send an engine with repairs to an engine distributor or axle issues to an axle supplier.”

MORE THAN MESHING The real driving force behind powertrain integration efforts, notes Mario Sanchez, director of technical sales support for engine-maker Cummins, is the software linkage between engine and transmission along with potentially other components. “It is more than just better meshing of the transmission and engine,” he says. “The engine and transmission are linked, constantly communicating and adapting to the operating conditions due to critical data sharing. That leads to more efficient

American Trucker/February 2015 21

cover story operation with more time spent in the sweet spot of the [engine’s] rpm band, which means fuel cost savings. The operational efficiency an AMT provides also means less driver fatigue and an easier overall driving experience.” Since 2013, Cummins has partnered with Eaton Corp. to develop several SmartAdvantage integrated engine/AMT packages, which combine Cummins ISX15 or ISX12 diesel engines with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed AMT. For natural gas engines, Eaton and Cummins Westport, a joint venture between Cummins and Canada’s Westport Innovations, offer an integrated powertrain package that combines the Cummins Westport ISX12 G engine and the Eaton UltraShift Plus AMT. Ryan Trzybinski, product planning manager for the Eaton Vehicle Group, notes that integrated powertrains hinge on what he calls “highly optimized control logic” to deliver fuel savings of between 3% and 6% on a consistent basis. Eaton is now working with Paccar Corp., parent company of Kenworth Truck and Peterbilt Motors, and Navistar on similar integrated packages. The linkup with Paccar’s MX13 is called Fuller Advantage with Small Step S-Ratio at Kenworth and dubbed APEX at Peterbilt. Anthony Gansle, marketing manager for on-highway product at Peterbilt, notes that APEX is a fundamental part of the OEM’s EPIQ fuel efficiency package, which aims to improve overall fuel efficiency by up to 14%. The package is available exclusively on the Peterbilt Model 579 tractor. “In the past, traditional methods to improve fuel economy usually resulted in a trade-off of reduced performance. For instance, lowering the rear axle ratio typically meant lower startability and less power,” he explains. “Today, improved tech-

Eaton is now creating integrated powertrain linkages with Paccar’s MX engine line for Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks. nology has helped minimize those trade-offs. The proprietary communication software developed for APEX is proof of that, resulting in both improved fuel efficiency and performance.” OEMs are deploying such powertrain integration packages with the goal of delivering increased fuel savings. Navistar, for example, relies on two such integrated packages for its ProStar ES highway tractor unveiled late last year. Through a combination of the powertrain packages and other initiatives, the ES offers up to 11% better fuel economy versus a 2010 ProStar model equipped with a 13L MaxxForce engine and 10-speed manual transmission, says Jodi Presswood, vice president-heavyduty truck product line at Navistar. Aaron Peterson, chief performance engineer at Navistar, notes that the setups include the Cummins/Eaton SmartAdvantage combination and a combination of Navistar’s 13L N13 engine with the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed AMT. Both offer a 3% to 6% fuel economy boost. Kurt Swihart, marketing director at Kenworth, adds that the need to

22 American Trucker/February 2015

boost fuel economy while simultaneously improving drivability rests at the heart of OEM powertrain integration efforts. “On the fuel economy side, software calibrations between the engine and transmission optimize rpm during acceleration, deceleration, pulling hills, and coasting down hills to maximize fuel economy,” he says. “In addition, targeting low engine rpm allows transmissions and axles— both with optimized gear ratios—to minimize parasitic losses throughout the powertrain, improving fuel economy.”

SPOTTING SAVINGS On the drivability side, Swihart continues, those same shared calibrations improve vehicle control at slow speeds and when pulling hills, for example. “The end result is a more fuel-efficient truck that provides an improved driving experience. This helps customers increase their profitability,” he notes. Swihart also believes that the benefits of powertrain integration can be gained regardless of whether truck owners follow the proprietary or non-proprietary path.

Coolant basics MANAGER: Bob Slaughter TITLE: Director of fleet maintenance COMPANY: Murphy Brown Trucking OPERATION: Private fleet running 300 tractors pulling 430 livestock and feed tank trailers

K

eeping trucks up and running is job number one at any fleet, yet the stakes are much higher when that fleet hauls livestock. Murphy Brown Trucking is that fleet, hauling live hogs and feed for Warsaw, NC-based Murphy Brown LLC. The company includes 450 companyowned farms and 2,000 contracted farmers and growers in 12 states, producing some 16 million hogs every year for Smithfield Foods. Murphy Brown Trucking tackles the transport of

hogs and feed with a private fleet of 300 day cab tractors and 300 livestock trailers plus 130 or so feed tank trailers. Drivers typically operate within 100 mi. of their domicile so they are usually home every night. It falls to Bob Slaughter and his team of 40 technicians scattered among six shops to keep all that equipment up and running. Slaughter believes that the basic “blocking and tackling” of preventive maintenance (PM) is critical to keeping downtime to a minimum and preserving resale value.

O

Above all, though, Thompson emphasizes that taking a holistic view of the coolant system—not just the coolant itself—is critical within a truck PM strategy. “You need to look at the environment within which a truck works, the temperature variation it’s exposed to, and the condition of the equipment overall as well as the coolant system,” Thompson says. “A properly maintained coolant system lowers the freeze point and raises the boiling point, protecting the engine across all seasons.” Murphy’s Slaughter points out that the different operating conditions of his fleet’s trucks necessitate a more watchful eye on engine coolant. The use of improper coolants and/or inadequate cooling system maintenance can result in overheating engines and “pitting” in piston linings if the coolant leaks into the engine oil, adding up to some very expensive repairs. “While coolant checks can be things people tend to ignore, coolant problems can lead to a $30,000 engine repair bill,” he explains. “That’s something you can’t ignore.”

PROBLEM

ne of the basics that Slaughter and his maintenance team focus on is engine coolant. It is checked for every truck at every oil change, which is usually anywhere between 25,000 and 30,000 mi. “We make coolant checks an important part of our PM process,” Slaughter explains. “My philosophy is to invest in a premium long-life coolant at the start and then check it regularly to make sure the pH level is the proper balance, for starters.” Susan Thompson, product information team manager and technical service manager at WIX Filters, stresses that the type of engine coolant in use by a fleet will dictate its PM strategy to a large degree. In general, engine coolants are either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol based, she explains, with the key difference being the type of chemical additive package within the coolant. As time goes on, some chemical additives get “used up” and need to be replaced. However, newer organic acid technology (OAT) additives require that the coolant itself be completely replaced—usually at a 150,000mi. interval—once the additives get used up.

Use of PacLease equipment allows fleet to pay closer attention to routes, distribution patterns

T

Two things are on the mind of Manny Rangel Jr., president of Amigos Logistics, the transportation arm of Amigos Foods, where he serves as CFO. “New driver hours-of-service regulations have forced us to rethink many of our distribution patterns,” he says. “We now approach routing on the basis of ensuring drivers have enough on-duty time left to make stops we promised customers before a mandatory rest period begins. Sometimes we have to split routes to stay within the boundaries of the law. “CSA scores have also become a much larger part of our thinking,” Rangel continues. “Enforcement activity has been growing over the past two years, and negative ratings can impact our image with customers, not to mention point to unsafe practices. That has led to a more concerted effort to adjust operations and educate drivers, so everyone here understands how this affects them and the company.” Amigos Foods serves food processors and retail customers across the country with a full line of beef, pork, poultry, lamb, seafood, and

cheese items. The company operates from distribution centers in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix. Along with growth in its business came the need for a reliable fleet to serve an expanding customer base. In the company’s Chicago location, 30 trucks are delivering around the city’s metropolitan area, as well as to distributors, grocery stores, and restaurants up to 200 mi. away in Indianapolis. A typical Amigos Foods truck makes 10 to 12 stops daily. Amigos Foods also serves customers as far away as 800 mi. east to New York and in all states between there and Illinois. “New York is a growing market for us and it works well since we can make a delivery, then backhaul seafood from the East Coast for Midwest distribution,” Rangel says. “When we opened our Chicago branch in 2001, we operated our own fleet,” he explains. “However, breakdowns hampered our ability to meet delivery commitments. Ensuring maximum uptime is ultimately the key to our operation’s success. “We needed to take a different approach,” Rangel continues. “Leasing solved the problem, but at one time

we were leasing and renting trucks from three different full-service companies. What we learned was that the quality of a company’s rental trucks is a big indicator of the quality you can expect from leased units and the service you can expect from a full-service provider.” Now supplied by PacLease, the Amigos Foods fleet in Chicago includes nine medium-duty trucks with 24-ft. refrigerated van bodies. Most are Peterbilt Model 337s, and the newest is a Model 220 cabover to handle some tight areas in Chicago. Bodies for the trucks are supplied by Kidron and Morgan and are equipped with Carrier or Thermo King refrigeration units. The fleet also includes Kenworth T680 and Peterbilt Model 386 units. The sleeper-equipped tractors are powered by 485-hp. Paccar MX-13 engines for long-haul operations. “Leasing from PacLease has solved our equipment reliability problems,” says Rangel. “Looking back, that’s really no surprise because PacLease rental trucks were all well-spec’d, late-model vehicles. Other companies had older, termedout lease units in their rental fleets. There was a huge difference in philosophy when it came to offering rentals. “The right combination of leased vehicles and a full-service provider has allowed us to continue to build an efficient distribution network to support our aggressive business plan for growth,” Rangel states. “We began in Houston in 1994, expanded to serve the Midwest from Chicago in 2001, and in 2006 opened operations in Atlanta and Phoenix to service the eastern and western regions of the country and truly become a player on a national scale.” AT

How are maintenance and minor repairs handled? What do you do yourself? Have done by a shop? Do you use an OEM shop (truck dealer or engine manufacturer shop) or an independent truck repair shop? Most repairs are done when I’m at home by a local shop. Shane Wilcox, owner of Wilcox Enterprises, specializes in Detroit and all minor and major repairs. Preventive maintenance includes keeping air pressure up by checking with an air gauge and adjusting brakes every week. This way I can check under the vehicles.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires? Which brand of tires do you prefer? Do you use retreads?

Archuleta Transport Owner: Gilbert Archuleta Location: Colorado Springs, CO Gilbert Archuleta hauls mostly produce with his model-year 2000 Peterbilt and Utility refrigerated trailer. In business since 1978, Archuleta is currently leased to PLH Enterprises, hauling freight on demand.

I keep tires inflated to proper levels; balance and use balance rings. On my truck, I prefer Michelin on the steers and Toyo on the drives. As for retreads, some people like them. For me, I will not put a retread on my vehicle.

Do you stock parts for your trucks or purchase as needed?

How are major repairs handled? What do you do yourself? Done by an OEM shop or an independent truck repair shop?

As required, I carry extra headlights and fuses, as well as tail lights, clearance lights, and alternator belt. I purchase items when needed.

When forced to do any type of repairs, I’ll look for a major name shop to [handle] warranty work.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer?

What are three challenges you face with your maintenance/ repair program? How do you resolve each?

For the truck, it’s when it starts, as they say, to ‘nickel and dime’ you. In my case, with a reefer, it’s when the trailer cannot hold temperature.

In summer, it’s the heat—keeping correct air pressure in the tires, proper coolant level, checking fan belts to see if they’re cracking or stretching, and greasing my vehicle. In winter, I make sure that the fifth wheel stays greased; it not only helps with maintaining control, but it also helps with the fuel economy. Depending on the weather, [I also] get a truck and trailer wash to get all the chemicals off and try to keep erosion down.

What do you do in regard to maintenance/repairs to minimize downtime? I do the same thing every day. I get in the habit of checking the vehicle the same way all the time. This way, if you see something that doesn’t look like it did yesterday, you’ll know. But let me emphasize, on your restart, go over your vehicles closer than your everyday pretrip. Fifth wheels T he single biggest fifth wheel trend we’re seeing among fleets is to automate the coupling process, explains Rich Carroll, vice president-sales & marketing at Jost International. “Changing driver demographics and rising insurance costs, along with the need to focus on driver satisfaction and safety, is leading to the desire to eliminate this manual task with cab-actuated air release systems and advanced sensor systems.” The Jost air release fifth wheel operates independently from the standard release arm, and the system is protected by an interlock which requires that the vehicle is stopped and the trailer brakes set before air is provided to the cab controls. Jost is working to develop sensor systems to help ensure safe coupling, Carroll notes. Aaron Puckett, director of national fleet sales at Fontaine Fifth Wheel, also points to a focus on products that provide improved comfort and awareness for drivers. “Systems designed to help drivers properly, safely and easily couple tractors to trailers are in demand,” he says. “An air release option is being adopted by more fleets for driver satisfaction and retention, [and] providing SAF-Holland offers NoLube the ability to open the fifth wheel from the cab can also technology enhance safety.” Puckett also points out that Fontaine’s TechLock electronic lock indicator helps improve safety by employing sensors that let the driver know when the kingpin is correctly positioned inside the lock and the fifth wheel is closed. Additionally, the company’s SmartLock visual lock indicator adds to the visual inspection and tug test procedures necessary for proper coupling. The dual assist camera system launched this past fall by Fontaine features two video cameras that give the driver a clear picture of the fifth wheel and approaching trailer. The cameras, which are wired to a display in the cab, are mounted back-to-back behind the fifth wheel and low on the frame to prevent damage from the trailer’s kingpin. With the Fontaine system, the cameras automatically turn on when the truck is shifted into reverse. As the trac-

As the camera setup passes under the kingpin, the video feed in the cab automatically switches to the camera facing the fifth wheel, allowing the driver to watch the kingpin enter the fifth wheel. Wendy Cowan, director of product planning & market development at SAF-Holland Powered Vehicle Systems, says a new air release option for the SAF-Holland FWAL fifth wheel line provides driver comfort while reducing the potential for injury. All standard-duty Holland fifth wheels are now available with the air release system. Along with weight savings, Cowan adds, some fleets desire fifth wheel features that help cut maintenance costs. “Our FWAL forged aluminum fifth wheel offers the benefit of Holland’s NoLube technology, which eliminates the need for lubrication of the fifth wheel locking mechanism as well as the top plate surface,” she says. Jost is seeing dealers order its “no-tilt” offering on stock trucks, Jost offers air release option notes Carroll. The simple mechanism that does not require tools to convert the fifth wheel features pivot stops that keep the top plate rigid when required, such as in frameless dump trailers where articulation is provided in the trailer upper coupler. “When the pivot stops are disengaged, the top plate articulates,” he explains. “This design provides flexibility to satisfy the needs of different types of vocational FOR MORE INFORMATION, applications.” To improve safety and VISIT THESE WEBSITES: retain drivers, fleets are Jost International specifying systems and www.jostinternational.com components that make life on the road easier.
