At what cost?
T
The mandate delivered by President Barack Obama back in February to the EPA and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to raise fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks is going to raise something else as well: sticker prices. One group that’s already worried is the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn. (OOIDA). The group Fuel efficiency estimates that the first set of fuel efficiency standards implemented back in 2011 has increases will boosted sticker prices some $6,200 per raises costs, but unit. “These new standards will continue to push the cost of new trucks skyward, by how much? thereby forcing many small-business truckers and fleet owners to hold onto older trucks and put off buying new equipment as long as they can,” said Todd Spencer, OOIDA’s executive vice president. Others, such as Sandeep Kar, global automotive and transportation research director for worldwide consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, believe that long term, the post-2018 fuel efficiency mandates will work out in the industry’s favor. “While it presents short-term pain for the industry, the President’s decision to elevate fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks is definitely a strategic move [that] will indeed deliver long-term gain both locally and globally,” he noted. Only time will tell whether those yet-to-be-written fuel efficiency rules prove a burden or benefit to the industry. AT

F-150 revamped with aluminum
T
he 2015 model of Ford’s iconic F-150 pickup unwrapped at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit features the use of military-grade aluminum alloys throughout the vehicle to improve dent and ding resistance and save weight, the OEM said. “To meet the needs of our truck customers, we created smart new features and a whole new approach to using advanced materials and engines to improve capability and efficiency,” noted Raj Nair, Ford’s group vice president for global product development, in a statement. “Overall, up to 700 lbs. of weight have been saved, helping the F-150 tow more, haul more, accelerate quicker and stop shorter while contributing to efficiency.” According to the automaker, the new F-150, which goes on sale later this year, features a range of four engine options. Those include a 2.7L EcoBoost with standard automatic “start-stop” technology; a 3.5L V6 engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing; a 3.5L EcoBoost; and a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8. The 2.7L EcoBoost engine also features a lightweight, compact design to deliver the same power as some midrange V8s, Ford added. The OEM pointed out that its “start-stop” technology not only helps save fuel but is “specially tuned” for truck customers to shut off the engine to save fuel when the vehicle is stopped except when towing or in four-wheel drive. The engine restarts

New 2015 F-150 trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines also get active grille shutters as a standard feature. The shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed and automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. New technologies are part of a wide range of design improvements that include: ❑ Integrated loading ramps, which enable easy loading of ATVs, motorcycles and mowers. ❑ 360-deg. camera view using exterior cameras to create a bird’s-eye view of the truck to assist in parking, maneuvering in tight spots, and navigating down narrow roads and trails. ❑ BoxLink, which is a combination of metal brackets and custom cleats used to secure a variety of accessories in the cargo box, from ramps to storage bins to bed dividers. ❑ Light-emitting diode (LED) headlamps and tail lamps. ❑ LED spotlights on side-view mirrors, which provide powerful, durable and bright lighting around the truck exterior. www.ford.com
trucking insights
Breaking the retail wall E
very micro and small trucking company owner faces a similar dilemma. You become dependent on brokers for freight, which means all you haul is wholesale freight. Finding direct ship customers is the answer, but how? If you are like many small-business owners, more often than not approaching a potential customer results in hangups and doors being slammed shut. If you can’t break through the retail freight wall, how can you grow your business? The answer? Instead of selling your hauling services, you need to do some freight prospecting. This is where you locate manufacturers, distributors and companies with freight to haul that works with your trucks. You then need to be available to provide those companies with your freight rates upon request. The difference? In the first example above, you’re asking potential customers to buy your hauling service. In the second, they’re coming to you and asking for a hauling rate; if it’s competitive, your trucks haul their freight at the rate you set. In other words, you’ve become an approved carrier for that shipper. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Documenting maintenance A rsenault Associates has added an Audit Trail option that provides a historical look at all maintenance operations logged into Dossier, its fleet management software. This includes what was done to the vehicle, who did it, and when it was accomplished. Additions, changes, and deletions as they apply to vehicles, parts, personnel, and work requested, done, or canceled are also tracked. According to the company, the chronological record of Audit Trail can help users find and then correct errors that were entirely inadvertent.
Audit Trail also provides critical documentation for purposes of regulatory compliance and personnel management. Records are easy to access as well. Every Dossier item has a details link that enables authorized users to view the complete history of that item in an event log. Items supported by Audit Trail in Dossier include unit (vehicle, typically), part, personnel, vendor, repair order, fuel item, customer, tire, purchase order, and part receipt. Information can be searched by user, item type, or time range. www.arsenault.com

Platform improves data flow
D
ata mining software provider Vigillo has introduced a new “big data” business intelligence platform for trucking fleets. Athena is an open-source solution that pulls data from a variety of sources, distills it into understandable information, and then presents it in a straightforward format. The solution is accessible through various devices and provides data-visualization through interactive dashboards. The initial Athena platform will launch with 12 basic channels focused primarily on trucking safety, efficiency and profitability, with the majority of data coming from public sources. In addition to gathering data from public sources, Vigillo will be working with other industry data sources such as legal, training and onboard system providers to capture relevant data from a wide variety of integrated channels. www.vigillo.com

new software solution from developer LinkeDrive is said to help drivers reduce fuel usage through real-time coaching. PedalCoach, which is available on smartphones, tablets or through in-vehicle integration with existing systems, constantly calculates the optimal fuel rate and dynamically adapts to the road, load and driver. According to the company, the advantage of this patentpending approach is that it sets a moving mpg target that doesn’t penalize drivers for hauling heavy loads or operating an older truck. www.linkedrive.com

In plain sight
I
I n July of 1988, President Ronald Reagan was giving a speech to the Future Farmers of America when he jokingly referred to the nine most terrifying words in the English language, ÒIÕm from the government, and IÕm here to help.Ó As if the demands on the trucking industry have not been enough with Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA), another federal agency has pronew regulations that Transition posed invoke the spirit of Reagan. Occupational Safety to electronic andThe Health Administration is proposing a transirecords could (OSHA) tion from the traditional reof workplace injuries make carriers’ porting using the annual paper Form to electronic. At a recent data public 300A informal public meeting, the agency was looking for input from industry stakeholders to help guide it forward with this new initiative. To the outside observer, this seems like a great idea since the elimination of paper in favor of electronic reporting should save time and money. But in true government fashion, the reality of the picture behind the pretty wrapping is drastically different than the perception. Undoubtedly, the most troubling aspect of the proposed electronic reporting of workplace injuries and illnesses is the fact that the information would be available to the public via the OSHA website. The agency cites the Open Government Initiative established by the White House as part of the reasoning behind the decision, but also states Ò[it] believes that public access to timely, establishment-specific injury and illness data will improve workplace safety and health.Ó Not surprisingly, union and labor representatives at the public meeting were overwhelmingly in favor of the
proposal. They cited example after example of companies that discouraged employees from reporting injuries and punished those who blew the whistle on unsafe work environments. The pitfalls of this tactic are too numerous to list given what we know about CSA, but the National School Transportation Assn. was the only representative of the trucking industry to speak at the meeting (other than the president of a local Teamsters union that had thousands of complaints from drivers regarding reportable injuries). Business representatives were opposed to the public release of this sensitive data, but the labor groups were equally united in their support. It is a classic management versus labor political football, and no one can predict which way OSHA will make it bounce. Officials at government agencies are always asking for examples of how a particular regulation is hurting or would hurt a particular business. Based on the testimony at the public meeting, OSHA officials have no idea how CSA data is being used by people outside vehicle enforcementÑand itÕs not in the business of improving driving safety. I urge the trucking industry to take action; otherwise, the information on annual Form 300A and other injury and illness records will become public. If OSHA doesnÕt change its mind, then fleets should be prepared for their injury and illness information to become public record so anyone can use it to paint any picture they want. City is cleaning up thanks to data integration
Keith Leech has served as fleet manager for the City of Sacramento since 2006 and for nearly 30 years has held management positions in the city’s public works and general services departments. “There have been a lot of changes over that time,” Leech says. “Today, we have business intelligence to make data-driven decisions that support continuous improvement of our fleet operations.” The City of Sacramento fleet of 2,300 vehicles includes 115 refuse trucks. The newest American LaFrance and Autocar models, with bodies from New Way and Wayne Engineering, are powered by Cummins ISL G natural gas engines and fitted with Allison MD3000 automatic transmissions. In 2009, the Sacramento City Council awarded a five-year contract for the purchase of the Zonar telematics platform and Electronic Vehicle Inspection Report (EVIR) on 100 refuse trucks and the integration of the solution with the city’s FleetFocus M5 maintenance management system from AssetWorks. The city’s fleet is maintained at five shops by 38 mechanics and 20 equipment service workers. With the integrated systems, vehicle data is captured on EVIRs.
Go to
The onboard telematics system transmits the information to Zonar servers, which makes it available to maintenance operations through FleetFocus, and automates the work order creation process. “When a refuse truck develops a mechanical issue out on its route, our department will know about it even if the driver doesn’t,” Leech explains, “and we often have a work order before the truck has returned to the shop. Downtime reductions are hard to quantify, but my feeling is that since the operators can’t perform inspections from the driver’s seat, we’re getting better defect reporting and we’re heading off failures.”
DRIVER INTERACTION Each refuse truck equipped with the EVIR system also has a handheld unit that the driver uses to perform inspections. The driver scans RFID tags at each inspection zone on the vehicle and indicates the status. The handheld device then transmits inspection results to the shop. “The integration also helps us educate the solid waste management department on the importance of thorough driver inspections,” Leech adds. “Before,

there was no mechanism to hold drivers accountable when their inspection reports were incomplete or forgotten.” Once a job is completed, FleetFocus updates information on the vehicle’s status in Zonar’s Ground Traffic Control software so dispatchers handling non-emergency city services know which units are ready to return to service. For example, solid waste department dispatchers use GPS technology to see real-time locations of refuse vehicles and re-route trucks when a pickup is missed or for some other need. The FleetFocus software also tracks all functions related to the maintenance of Sacramento refuse vehicles, including processing of repair and preventive maintenance work orders, capturing operating expenses, and tracking equipment usage, Leech notes. “The application of all this technology to our fleet has provided more efficient driving routes, a reduction in trip distances, tracking and reporting of idle time, and identification of vehicle problems, resulting in overall improvements in operational efficiency and lower fuel usage of more than eight percent,” Leech states.

ast month we began our nearly year-long series on tasks you can undertake during periods of slow freight with a look at how scheduling maintenance chores can ensure your trucks are in tip-top shape. This month we take a look at upgrading computer systems and their software. It’s very important to accomplish this particular task this year. As of April, Microsoft will cease to sup-

port and update its XP operating system. This includes the critical security updates of XP that we have become accustomed to installing over the past 10 years. So, if you have computers with the XP operating system, does this mean you need to purchase all new computers at a cost of hundreds if not thousands of dollars for the hardware plus new software? Not necessarily. “The one part of a computer that
wears out faster than any other is the hard drive,” says Eric Frilling, owner of Internet provider and computer repair company KenTenn Wireless in Union City, TN. “It’s the one component that is as much mechanical as it is electronic. It spins constantly while the computer is on, and like any mechanical device, it will eventually wear out. The good news is that it can be replaced with a new terabyte hard drive for under $100.

business of trucking “If storage space isn’t an issue, then consider a solid-state hard drive (SSD). It’s limited to 120 to 160 gigabytes of space, has no moving parts, and lasts longer than the spinning hard drive. An SSD costs from $160 to $250,” he adds. You may need to pay a computer geek to format the hard drive and install the new operating system. I recommend Windows 7 over Windows 8, as Windows 7 is compatible with most software that works in XP. The Windows 7 operating software will set you back between $60 for the barebones Home Edition to around $150 for the Professional version. To know which is best for you, you’ll need to know whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system.
What operating system are you running? To determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP, do the following: ❑ Click Start. ❑ Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
If you don’t see x64 Edition listed, then you’re running the 32-bit version of Windows XP. If x64 Edition is listed under System, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows XP.
TAKING PRECAUTIONS The Windows 7 package contains a disk for each. A 64-bit operating system can handle large amounts of memory—typically 4GB of RAM or more—more efficiently than 32-bit operating systems can. Not all computers are 64-bit capable, however, so before removing your old hard drive to upgrade to a new one, it’s recommended you copy and back up your My Documents and email client files (Outlook, Thunderbird, Opera, etc). It’s suggested you use something like DropBox.com, Google Docs or a combination of the two. This will protect your important files if the computer crashes or is wiped out by a disaster. These files will be available to download into the new hard drive. A thumb drive or an external backup hard drive can be used as well. You may also be able to use a USB 2.0 SATE/IDE cable to transfer the files. These can usually be purchased for between $5 and $25. Once you’ve upgraded to Windows 7, retrieve your My Documents files from the location and
20 American Trucker/March 2014
device you saved them to and copy them to the new hard drive. After you’ve reinstalled your email client program, import email addresses and any valuable emails you’ve saved. Reinstall the software that you had in the computer before the upgrade. Most software licenses allow the reinstallation of the program in the same machine, even though it has a new hard drive. For safety’s sake, you should check with each software manufacturer for what their individual license permits. Let them know that the hard drive was replaced and the operating system upgraded.
FINAL STEPS Don’t forget to reload your Internet and email security programs. Next, go to the Microsoft Update website and set up Windows Update for the operating system software. This will help keep your PC safe and running smoothly. You’ll get the latest security and other important updates from Microsoft automatically.
While Microsoft will no longer provide weekly critical updates for XP, the company did issue a statement in January that it will furnish malware assassin to XP users until mid-2015. What are the benefits of doing an upgrade in this fashion rather than purchasing new computers? ❑ The savings over a new computer system are substantial—several hundred dollars for each new computer, plus several thousand dollars if software other than that of the operating system needs to be replaced. ❑ Training for you and your employees is kept to a minimum, as most of the software is the same as what was in the pre-upgraded computer. Windows 7 is similar to XP. ❑ While each computer is upgraded, downtime may be held to a minimum. You can work on one computer at a time or one department’s computers at a time, thus causing as little operational disruption as possible. ❑ Critical capital for other needs and projects is saved by upgrading rather than replacing your entire computer system. ❑ Having computers that should be usable for the next five to seven years is a definite money-saver. Rather than purchasing an entirely new computer system during a time of economic uncertainty, you’ll have upgraded your current system to a point where it can serve you for the next several years. We can no longer operate without computers, but we must be vigilant and resourceful in keeping up with technology while not exceeding the capital investment capabilities of our trucking business. t should come as no surprise to fleets these days that commercial trucks continue to get more expensive as OEMs and related suppliers comply with a variety of emissions reduction and fuel efficiency mandates. So, how can fleets minimize the expense associated with their rolling stock—both at the time of purchase and over its lifecycle?
Te first step is to recognize the increase in equipment costs due to regulatory efforts over the last decade and one-half. Emissions reduction mandates are at the top of that list. Some $1,800 to $3,000 were added to the base cost of a Class 8 truck in 2002 to meet the first round of regulations, followed by an extra $5,000 to $10,000 in 2007, and another $6,700 to $10,000 in 2010 to meet the final round of the rules.
COST INCREASES AHEAD
Ten there are the 2011 fuel efficiency/greenhouse gas (GHG) rules that apply to 2014 through 2018 model-year trucks, which add an average $6,200 to the sticker price of a Class 8 truck. Such “upgrades” are one reason why global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan estimates the average price of a Class 8 tractor now ranges between $110,000 and $120,000. And that’s before “next stage” fuel efficiency rules planned by the U.S. government for post-2018 models get factored in, which will affect tractor and possibly trailer prices.
“President Barack Obama’s decision to elevate fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks [afer 2018] is definitely a strategic move [but] while it presents short-term pain for the industry, it will indeed deliver long-term gain both locally and globally,” says Sandeep Kar, Frost & Sullivan’s global automotive and transportation research director. “Trucks featuring better fuel efficiency and economy will cost higher than the current breed of trucks but will deliver reduced fuel expenses for fleets, thereby reducing lifecycle costs and hence total cost of ownership,” he explains. “While the standards are not yet formalized, it will be safe to assume that the limits proposed could be met through some technologies that are already [available], albeit in limited application areas,” Kar adds. “Fuel costs have already become the [biggest] portion of a fleet’s operating expenses, so any change that reduces fuel costs in a volatile fuel price environment will be welcomed by the
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
end-users.” Yet while improving fuel economy will help minimize equipment expenses in the long run, Ken Gillies, manager of truck purchasing and engineering for GE Capital Fleet Services, still believes a more fundamental review of a truck’s basic purpose within a fleet’s operation is required.
MATCH GAME
“Boiled down to its basics, fleets need to determine if their current vehicle is correctly matched for the job it’s expected to perform,” he says. “Sometimes it takes some persuasion to get there because often there’s resistance to change over concerns that equipment will get more expensive. But you must work past that assumption because there are opportunities to drive down costs by better matching the truck and its job.” Improving equipment specs, fuel economy, and even lowering maintenance costs are all benefits derived from matching the truck to the job, Gillies stresses. Mike Hamilton, national vice president of financial services at AmeriQuest Transportation Services, points out that while post-2010 emissions-compliant equipment is more expensive to buy and costs more to maintain, there can be fuel economy gains as well. Tat’s a costsaving factor that can ultimately lower total cost of operation (TCO)

cover story calculations for a fleet. “So you can’t just look at utilization alone because adding in maintenance and fuel can make for different decisions in terms of whether to extend the unit’s life or replace it,” Hamilton explains. “It’s the data used in the TCO calculation that really drives that decision.” Dennis Cooke, president of fleet management solutions for Ryder System, agrees. He notes that TCO now covers a wide assortment of factors, such as increased acquisition costs and maintenance expense; training required to bring technicians up to speed for maintaining new technology trucks; new hours-of-service restrictions; and the driver shortage.
FUEL ECONOMY TRADE-OFF “However, both the EPA 2010 and GHG 2014 emissions hurdles have resulted in much better fuel economy than prior generations of technology,” Cooke adds. “Depending upon the customer application and annual miles, this savings in fuel spend could help mitigate the acquisition costs and maintenance expense.” That data can also affect the asset ownership period as well, notes Hamilton. For example, he points to the experience of an AmeriQuest customer operating 500 leased tractors. “Under their old TCO model, they used to replace [tractors] every 550,000 mi., so they would project a replacement date solely on the miles,” Hamilton says. “But now we add fuel and maintenance expense into the equation. Now we’re seeing a variance in replacement cycles; instead of 550,000 mi., we may replace a unit at 450,000 mi. or maybe extend the life 100,000 mi. beyond the 550,000 mark based on the data we get back from the TCO model we use.” Hamilton believes it’s really im-

If you have a route with traffic, you’re going to get back poor fuel economy results. Does that fuel economy data then drive replacement? No. Whether the unit is a newer model or older, you’re going to get poor fuel economy results. That’s why you sometimes can get a false-positive when plugging fuel economy data into TCO.” At the end of the day, he believes the key takeaway of TCO is the data it provides on when best to replace equipment. “You can’t look at the fleet average anymore or base replacement times off broad studies,” Hamilton says. “If you haven’t done a true TCO analysis within the last several years, you are leaving money on the table.” Joe Monteleone, with WheelTime Fleet Services, adds that plugging more accurate maintenance expenses into TCO calculations represents another critical data point. Monteleone coordinates and develops fleet services packages and agreements for each
of WheelTime’s fleet customers. “Knowing the proper time to dispose of the unit and get the best return from a resale perspective while keeping maintenance in line before the bell curve of higher costs take effect is the goal,” he explains. “A solid PM [preventive maintenance] program gives [fleets] control of their maintenance cost by giving them visibility into service events and overall vehicle health,” he points out. “The use of standardized, customer-specific operations brings consistency to a fleet’s maintenance practices, allowing it to expand the useful life of their assets.”
PREDICTIVE MODELING Monteleone adds that all of his company’s repairs are coded using vehicle maintenance reporting standards in order to provide better data into the specifics of repairs, thus helping fleets with predictive maintenance and future truck spec’ing. “This keeps overall maintenance costs down and allows the customer to buy the right asset for the correct application,” he says. AmeriQuest’s Hamilton agrees, stressing that TCO must be based on what a particular fleet is doing. “The past is no longer a predictor of the future because technology has changed
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
and performance varies by the type of unit, its location and application,” he says. “Te ability to gather a lot of different information—even tire wear and accident data—can better inform fleets on how to optimize the life of their equipment.”
WARDING OFF BREAKDOWNS Ryder’s Cooke adds that his company is also utilizing telematics to proactively pull post-2010 emissions-compliant trucks off the road for a repair before they break down. “We’re also working closely with the OEMs sharing maintenance data, which results in improved component quality for future trucks,” he notes. Cooke also hopes that cost pressures will slow. “[But] the introduction of bulk DEF [diesel exhaust fluid] storage and dispensing [critical to making selective catalytic reduction technology work], complex diagnostics platforms, as well as DPF [diesel particulate filter] cleaning technologies will continue to be big hurdles for most any fleet,” he points out. Noel Perry, senior consultant with FTR Transportation Intelligence and president of research firm Transport Fundamentals, also emphasizes that while great strides in fuel economy occurred over the last two decades—since 1993, the TL sector’s fuel efficiency has jumped 8.9%—overall trucking costs increased 4% in the early 2000s and 8% between 2010-2011. These include higher equipment prices, rising driver pay scales, fuel costs, and regulatory costs. While costs were flat in 2012-2013, FTR is forecasting a 2% to 3% spike for 2014. Cooke notes, though, that capturing and analyzing diagnostic and maintenance data is helping his company improve its PM program. “Those improvements to PMs, in-shop diagnostic tools and
use of telematics will help to control TCO,” he believes. While Frost & Sullivan’s Kar agrees, noting that repair and maintenance is in his words “the heart and soul” of TCO today, fuel costs, the driver shortage and technician shortage are “messing up” traditional lifecycle costing methods. “That’s why TCO is now front and center for both new and used trucks,” he explains. “Improved productivity is directly related to TCO, even with older model trucks. Clearly, the integration of data and TCO calculations form the dominant value proposition for fleets. Telematics is important for gathering that data; while it may seem too expensive to invest in telematics, if done right, it returns tremendous benefits.” Kar also thinks the larger the fleet, the higher the potential for better analysis as it gets more ownership of data. “Te midsized and smaller fleets will have to rely more on OEMs and third parties to get the data they need for TCO calculations,” he notes.
REMEMBERING THE TRAILER Kar also stresses that the trailer should not be an afterthought where TCO calculations are con-

cerned. “Side skirts and other aerodynamic fuel-saving devices are lowering the TCO for trailer units. It’s the small savings that add up,” he says. Fleets need to look closely at nontruck factors that could really impact TCO metrics in the very near future, he says. Tere’s a lot of talk about the needs of transportation infrastructure and how that may push up taxes and tolls, he explains, two more factors that could negatively affect TCO for fleets. “Right now, TCO is 37% driverrelated and drivers will need to be paid more; it’s long overdue and needed, but it will inflate TCO in the short term,” Kar adds. “Also, we forget we’ve lived with low-interest rates for years now,” he emphasizes. “As the economy improves and interest rates go up, that’s going to directly affect the tractor-trailer [cost] portion of TCO, though leasing can mitigate some of this.” Whether it’s emissions technology, taxes and tolls, or the growing use of technology, everyone agrees that the cost of trucks is not coming down anytime soon. But with analysis, proper planning and a keen eye on costs, truck owners can minimize some of those added costs. AT

Back in 2012, the Austrian trucking firm purchased 30 new Kögel cargo rail trailers to help beef up its efforts to shift more of its long-haul European freight to rail. Because of this shift, Nothegger says it has so far transferred some 31 million mi. of its cargo from roads to rails, eliminating 40,000 tons of carbon dioxide from its truck fleet annually. Now Nothegger is taking another step in the “clean air” direction by ordering 220 two- and three-axle high-

cania notes that the power output from its new line of 13L inline six commercial truck engines—available in 450- and 490-hp. versions—declines 8% when operated on 100% biodiesel due to the lower energy content of the biodiesel fuel. “Pure biodiesel always produces notably lower carbon dioxide emissions compared with conventional diesel, but precisely how much lower depends on how the biodiesel has been produced,” explains Örjan Åslund, head of product affairs for Scania. “Certain types of biodiesel can give a carbon dioxide reduction of 80% or more.” Maintenance interval changes are required when Scania’s engines are operated with high-content biodiesel fuels, Åslund points out. “The attributes of biodiesel fuel lead to an increased proportion of ash in the exhaust fumes, leading to shorter service intervals and a slightly increased consumption of fuel,” he explains. “This consumption of both fuel and AdBlue [the brand of diesel exhaust fluid used by Scania’s trucks] consumption may increase by 10% in an engine run on 100% biodiesel.”

way tractors from Swedish truckmaker Scania. Equipped with Scania-made 13L 450-hp. biodiesel engines, the trucks are capable of running on 100% biodiesel. Austria provides tax incentives to those that use pure biodiesel. As a result, biodiesel costs less per gallon than petroleum-based diesel at filling stations. Yet when it came to maintaining those engines, Nothegger faced a serious question: Would engines running on fuel containing high amounts of biodiesel generate higher maintenance costs, in effect wiping out the savings generated by the lower cost at the pump and the tax incentives? “The maintenance scheme depends on the type of operation, which is decided in a dialogue between the Scania workshop and the customer,” he adds, noting that Nothegger signed a repair and maintenance contract with Scania to help deal with those issues. For the most common type of freight operation in Europe, namely traditional longhaul, Scania developed a set maintenance interval for its biodiesel engines that includes an engine oil and engine oil filter change every 27,960 mi. or annually; a fuel filter change roughly every 18,641 mi.; an oxidation catalytic converter change every 155, 343 mi.; and a renewal of the DPF every 7,300 hours. Åslund stresses that another important aspect of biodiesel is that it is an uncomplicated alternative fuel to use. “Drivers simply need to fill up and drive away,” he explains. “If they find themselves somewhere where no biodiesel is available, they can just mix whatever remains in their tanks with conventional diesel.” Nothegger expects to be able to cut its operating costs. Based on total distance driven of roughly 93,205 mi. per truck, the fleet estimates its annual savings could be about $5,442 per truck. —SEAN KILCARR

Cargo securement S ecuring loads is only half the battle for many fleets. Ensuring those loads arrive at their destinations on time and in one piece is another battle carriers must fight. Fortunately, there are a number of load securement products on the market that can assist fleets of all types—from dry van, to refrigeration, to flatbed and even bulk operations—in accomplishing this task. “There are many ways to quantify the return on a fleet’s invest ment in cargo securement equipment,” says Mark Arnold, manager of process improvement at Kinedyne Corp. “Most tie back to the ability to improve load factors and claim ratios, and to reduce safety occurrences. While quantifying the benefit of some devices is relatively easy in terms of compliance, calculations on other investments are more complex, but the returns are significant so the effort is worthwhile.” To prove conclusively that its mechanical tarp systems improve fuel efficiency on empty and loaded bulk trailers, ElCargo Fabrication put the solutions to the test at Energotest, a biannual event conducted by FPInnovations’ Performance Innovation Transport (PIT) group, a not-for-profit engineering and research center. “We submitted a representative mechanical tarp system for bulk semi-trailers,” says Roger Lussier, sales manager at ElCargo. Fuel consumption was measured by weighing portable tanks. Tests were conducted using a control vehicle and units equipped with the mechanical tarp system. “We now have independent verification of a 14.93% fuel economy benefit when a loaded or empty bulk trailer is covered with a mechanical tarp system,” he added. It is also essential that fleets don’t overlook driver training for cargo control products, notes Jeff Boyd, director of sales at Aero Industries. “Misuse of cargo control solutions can lead to delays, cargo damage or loss, and injuries,” he says. “Fleets can reduce misuse by choosing products that are user-friendly. They should also take advantage of training tools and manuals for operators provided by manufacturers.”

Kinedyne’s Kaptive Beam System allows for adjustments in 2-in. increments along mounted tracks.
“Using cargo control equipment properly will determine not only how effective that piece of equipment performs in transit, but it will also reduce the risk of failure and undue wear and tear,” states Kinedyne’s Arnold. “A user’s better understanding of the equipment’s capabilities, limits and proper use helps ensure that regulatory requirements are met, and that the full return on the investment is realized.” Kinedyne offers a full line of load securement products, including its Kaptive Beam System, a double-decking solution using a series of tracks and beams permanently mounted inside a trailer. Each beam in the product is adjustable in 2-in. increments and can be used in 96- and 102-in.-wide trailers. The beams have a vertical working load limit of 2,200 lbs. and a horizontal rating of 1,500 lbs. Tracks are available for surface mount and sheet and post trailer installations. Other suppliers in the cargo securement market include Ancra International, which manufactures a range of cargo control solutions, including the Lift-ADeck II system for decking freight inside van trailers. For flatbeds, Ancra has its X-Treme winch and ratchet tie downs, along with the Ergo 360 winch bar. Offered in standard combination and box end combination models to suit various applications, the bars are designed to be rotated 360 deg. while keeping the handle and tip in alignment for leverage. Save-A-Load’s Heavy Duty IQ 200 hydraulic load bar, which extends from 83 to 114 in., can be used vertically or horizontally inside dry or refrigerated trailers. The load bar is designed to maintain contact with trailer walls and compensate for flexing, expansion and contraction due to temperature variations. The
Ancra International’s Lift-A-Deck II decking system allows carriers to maximize the available cargo space inside a trailer.
bars also feature a pushbutton release mechanism and an articulating foot that helps hold them in place while preventing them from punching through trailer walls. “Fleets will see a noticeable return on investment when they purchase quality cargo securement products,” says Jeff Boyd at Aero Industries. “These technologies can mitigate driver injury risk and reduce costs associated with cargo loss or damage.”
