The March issue of American Trucker is headed to our booth at the Mid-America Trucking Show, so we decided to alter our editorial calendar a bit. Rather than a planned feature on maintenance (critical, but not very sexy), the cover story this month looks into the future and asks, basically, whether cool trucks are on the way out. In this age of uniformly aerodynamic and efficient rigs, how is There always a successful independent expected will be a place to stand out in the eet crowd? for individual mega-f Te good news— style in trucking and this isn’t a surprise to our readers—is the owner-operator segment is alive and well, and truck makers are paying attention. As readers will see for themselves, new trucks are being built to ofer the best in both efciency and style. Te choices are many, and it’s up to the buyer to know what he or she needs—and likes— and has always dreamed about. Of course, the equipment evolution doesn’t mean old-school custom trucks are dinosaurs. Tis month’s cover features a 2001 Pete 379. We spotted it on a truck stop parking lot recently— how could we not? Turns out the truck is one of 20 highly customized rigs in the feet of JDT Logistics, a fam-

Owner Jim Davis tells us that all but one of his tractors are 379 “longheads” running 550-hp. Caterpillar engines with 13-speed transmissions. A feet made up of similar trucks makes life in the shop much simpler. He’s had “a tough go ’round” in deciding when to make the leap to new equipment. Davis says he’d be inclined to stick with the classic style, a new 389—although he might consider an aero truck, such as a 587 “slammed to the ground.” But he’s in no rush. A one-truck owner-op for 15 years, customers always admired his classic rigs and encouraged him to expand his feet. Tree years ago, opportunities arose that allowed him to do so and his business has taken of. He has a waiting list of drivers hoping to get on with JDT. “We go for that clean-cut, wellspoken, good-with-the-customers kind of driver,” Davis said. “Our trucks give them a sense of pride, and customers appreciate it.” It’s a good time to be an American trucker. merican Power Group (APG) has received notification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that its V5000 dual-fuel turbocharged natural gas conversion technology is approved for use in certain Volvo/ Mack engines. Approvals apply to the Intermediate Useful Life (IUL) D12, D13, E7 and MP8 engines built from 2004 to 2012 in 11.9L or 12.8L. Te approval covers 28 engines in all. These approvals include APG’s first dualfuel conversion approval of the selective catalyst reduction engine technology, which meets or exceeds the current EPA OEM-certified engine emissions criteria (2010 and newer). These IUL
approvals are in addition to APG’s 456 EPA approvals already received for Outside Useful Life (OUL) engines covering six of the top seven OEM engine platforms for model years from 2009 to the mid-1990s. “The magnitude and strategic importance of this frst series of IUL approvals marks another important milestone for APG and has multiple value-add implications,” said Lyle Jensen, president and CEO. “The IUL addressable market is strategically important because it allows APG access to the medium to large feet owners who operate more than 300 vehicles and keep their trucks four to five years.” www.americanpowergroupinc.com

business of trucking
ON POINT Success depends on avoiding these common mistakes
B Y T I M B R A D Y, B U S I N E S S E D I T O R

T
rucking is a tough business. Just ask anyone who has either tried to start a trucking company or who owns a successful operation. According to Entrepreneur Magazine, 40 million businesses are started each year in the United States, and “a meager 350,000 actually grow and make money.” Tat’s just nine-tenths of one percent that actually make a proft in the frst year. Now that doesn’t mean the other 99.1% all fail. Tree out of four businesses that start each year make it to the second year, reports StatisticBrain.com; however, by the
16 American Trucker/March 2015
fourth year, 56% of those businesses have failed. What are the numbers for trucking companies? Again, according to StatisticBrain.com, by year four, 55% of those new carriers will be out of business. What are the major reasons (and what led to them) contributing to the majority of business failures in that four-year period?
1. INCOMPETENCE (THE CAUSE OF FAILURE FOR 46% OF BUSINESSES) Emotional pricing. Tis means the businessperson made pricing
decisions for their services based on his or her feelings and not on a costplus-proft margin formula. Owner’s pay exceeds what the business will support. This indicates the owner didn’t look at sustainability and growth for his company and most likely was taking whatever was lef over afer all the monthly bills were paid; in essence, stealing from the future of the company. Proft is meant for sustainability and growth. Salary must be an expense and absolutely be no more than what another person would be paid to do the same job.
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
3. LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN THE TRUCKING BUSINESS (11%)
Lack of planning. Going into business without a defnitive business plan is like starting a trip with multiple shipment drops without looking at a map and with GPS turned of. You never know where you’ll end up. No experience in recordkeeping. This is often the root of the other failings. Not knowing your numbers (which come from quality recordkeeping) causes a domino efect throughout the business. You’ll have no idea how to price your hauling services, no idea what you can pay yourself in salary, and you’ll lack the facts and figures needed to plan.
2. UNBALANCED EXPERIENCE OR LACK OF MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE (30% ) Poor credit-granting practices. One of the frst mistakes many new carriers make is granting credit to shippers and brokers without fully investigating their credit histories. Te fastest way to go out of business is to run out of operating cash when you have loads to haul. Tis is called cash fow; it’s the money that a business uses to pay its bills. An efective way for a small carrier to manage receivables is to have a factoring company handle the invoicing and collection. Te factor will have the infrastructure to know the creditworthiness of any shipper or broker with whom you’d like to
haul freight, and to what level they can be indebted to you that will ensure timely payment. A factor will also ensure you receive the amount of the invoice, less a small fee, to keep your cash flowing and your trucks rolling. Expanding (growing) rapidly. Growth requires capital—bucket loads of it. Te cost of adding more trucks far exceeds just the cost of a tractor and trailer. Hiring a driver, obtaining insurance, getting a base plate and permits, and fnding the necessary loads are just some of the additional costs. Each truck multiplies the operating costs, such as paying the driver and buying fuel. Typically, it takes three months for a truck and driver to be self-supporting. Having the opportunity to expand doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to grow. Expansion needs capital and advance planning. Inadequate borrowing practices. Tis is one area where careful planning is critical. Be careful how much you borrow and from whom you borrow, and pay attention to the terms and interest rate. “Never borrow more than you need, and only borrow when your business will generate a proft when the borrowed money is invested into your company,” one business fnance professor instructed his students. “You need to look for the ROI on borrowed money in the same way you’d look at any investment. Tat return must exceed the cost of the loan (principle and interest required to pay it back).”
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
Inadequate number of loads. Not having the loads to produce revenue to keep a company moving forward is one of the bigger mistakes made by new entrants into the industry. Many think they can rely strictly on load boards, but it takes a three-pronged approach for the micro-trucking company. Te frst prong is a quality direct shipper contract, where the trucker receives a retail freight rate. This contract doesn’t involve any third parties; the relationship is directly with the shipper. Te second prong is a list of quality freight brokers that the trucker can rely on to provide freight that’s proftable for the trucking company. Tis is considered wholesale freight since a third party receives a portion of the hauling revenue. Te third prong is the load boards. Tey typically pay the lowest rates because there is no relationship between the motor carrier and the shipper or broker. Since a working relationship doesn’t exist, there is no desire on the part of the shipper or broker to pay top dollar.
4. NEGLECT, FRAUD, OR DISASTER (1% ) These three reasons are really self-explanatory. You can control neglect and fraud with foresight and planning, and through careful hiring practices of employees and contractors. You never know when disaster will strike; therefore, you should purchase adequate liability and property insurance. Don’t forget to purchase life insurance on any vital personnel. Avoid—or at least minimize— these mistakes, and success is far more likely. Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. Too much torque
I
I’ve had a front row seat for all of the major changes to the truck wheel installation process over the past three decades. By combining “good-and-tight” with antiseize, technicians thought they had the solution for stud pilot wheel systems in the 1980s. When hub-piloted wheels started showing up in the ’90s, the good-andtight process remained, but the cans of anti-seize went back in the cabinet Custom settings because there were no frozen inner and outer put tire dealers in cap nuts. For most people, torqued meant a difficult spot tight so everyone was happy. Things started changing around the turn of the century as commercial tire service providers and fleets began to recognize the importance of precision when installing disc wheels and rims. With hub-pilot systems dominating the market, people started paying more attention to the actual torque specifications. At first, the solution appeared to be torque-limited extensions (torque sticks) because they wouldn’t create a lot of resistance in the shop. Unfortunately for technicians, they were proven to be inconsistent, so the industry had to adopt torque wrenches as the tools for wheel installation. Tools aside, the spec of 450 to 500 ft.-lbs. for hubpilot and stud-pilot wheels had universal acceptance. In order to account for the natural variation in torque wrenches, the target of 475 ft.-lbs. was easy to remember for technicians. Most of the vehicles on the road have disc wheel systems as opposed to demountable rims, so the tools could be set at 475 ft.-lbs. in the morning and left there until the end of the day. The simplicity was something to behold— and apparently, short-lived. One of the unintended consequences of the 475
ft.-lbs. spec is the reliance on checking the torque within the first 50 to 100 mi. after installation. Dual wheels can settle as they flex, which may result in the loss of bolt tension. The only way to determine if the clamping force has been reduced is to check the torque, which means the fasteners need to be checked shortly after the wheels are serviced. Tests have shown that when technicians pay close attention to the details of cleaning, lubricating (on hub-pilot wheels), tightening and torquing, the torque check is not necessary. However, the lack of consistency in the field makes torque checks a harsh reality for most of the industry. That reality has led to fleets asking for different torque specs from their wheel suppliers partly because they are unwilling to follow the torque check recommendations. And while it seems like higher torque settings are a logical solution, it’s creating an unprecedented level of confusion for the commercial tire service industry. What used to be a simple process of torquing every disc wheel to 475 ft.-lbs. has become a literal soup of different specifications. Fleets are telling their service providers to raise the torque as high as 650 ft.-lbs., which puts the tire dealers in a tough spot. When fleets are unable to produce written documentation that their wheel supplier has approved a higher torque setting, the only option is to stick with the published torque specifications. Standard of care requirements dictate that installers follow industry guidelines at all times, so 475 ft.-lbs. is the only acceptable target in most cases. But the growing number of fleets with a different spec are taking a clear picture and making it muddier by the day. AT

ON THE ROAD
Next-gen classics O
Form and function make new trucks the best of both worlds BY KEVIN JONES, EDITOR
20 American Trucker/March 2015
wner-operators are always going to play a big role in trucking— because they know how to adapt to changing times. Te same goes for the trucks aimed at the independent trucker market. Tese new tractors are still the custom dream machines that turn heads and pamper the owner with all the amenities. But, more than ever, they’re being designed and built as tools of the trade—efcient and efective highway workhorses (that also can pass for show ponies in any parking lot). Western Star trucks are a classic example of classic style—and the brand’s limited production lends a certain swagger that a feet truck with big market share can’t pull of. Te readily identifable red star badge on a long, square hood immediately conjures an image of hauling logs in the rugged Pacifc Northwest or pulling a multi-trailer road train across the arid Outback. Add an industrial-strength grille guard to the massive nose, maybe even a row of of-road headlights, and some air horns on the cab, and you have one serious truck. But, explains Guy Lemieux, marketing segment manager for Western Star Trucks, customers now are asking for something a little diferent. “Our traditional trucks are great. People love them for heavy-haul and those kinds of applications,” Lemieux says. “But we did a lot of customer research, and we found that people really wanted to maintain that traditional look and styling and uniqueness, and they wanted aerodynamics—they wanted both.” What customers didn’t want was a truck that looked like a “jelly bean” or “minivan,” he notes. So the truck designers were “nudged” away from obvious shapes—and, in wind tunnel and road tests, it turned out that the hard edges work. Likewise, customers want to retain the sun visor and so, with a little work, the traditional touch proved aerodynamically neutral. Te result is the new 5700XE, which cuts through the air about 9% better than Western Star’s current fuel efciency highway tractor, the 4900FE set-back model. Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
Mack Pinnacle Rawhide Edition: Custom options designed to tempt owner-ops
Lemieux concedes that Western Star is “the last to enter the fray” in the competition for fuel-efficient highway trucks, but he believes the 5700XE—which goes into full production in April—is a proven Western Star, yet lightweight and aerodynamic. And the market focus remains the same.
“We don’t sell a thousand trucks at a time to these superfeets,” Lemieux points out. “For smaller feets that are image-conscious and for owner-operators, for sure, it’s a tried-and-true Western Star.” Of course, Peterbilt is a brand that has long dominated the show-truck circuit, both in quali-

ty and quantity. A recent gathering of the faithful for a Peterbilt 75th anniversary event in Stockton, CA, drew nearly 400—that’s trucks, not visitors. But the iconic brand doesn’t plan to give up its place as a calendar pinup and aspirational tractor to make the transition into 21 st century trucking.

Western Star 5700XE: Aero with an edge
“Peterbilt is a brand—built over many years and for reasons that maybe no one can understand— that resonates with the entire industry,” says Todd Acker, director of marketing. Yet the changing dynamics of the industry have not been lost on the truck maker. Acker notes that feet consolidation, the rising price of equipment and operating costs—to say nothing of a recession or two— have made trucking a tough business for independents.
‘BALANCING ACT’
“We don’t feel that owner-operators are out of the market, but their role has shifed,” he says, pointing to the many who have signed on with feets for the bulk of their freight. “Tey’re purchasing equipment differently than they used to. And for us that’s been good.” Te traditionally styled Model 389, for instance, “is as strong now
22 American Trucker/March 2015
as it’s ever been” in terms of production numbers, but Peterbilt has seen real growth in aerodynamic products. So how does a brand set itself apart in an era when truck makers have all adopted that scientifcally efective shape and their trucks have begun to look like one another? Acker quickly points to three key areas: ❑ Fuel efciency: Fuel expense is important to any truck operator, whether independent or feet. ❑ Reliability: Te requirement for uptime is “stronger than ever” for buyers, especially for an operator with one to fve vehicles. ❑ Driver appeal: When truck drivers are in short supply and utilization is being hurt, having “the truck of choice”—built around comfort and ergonomics—is a key to success. And in all of these areas, Peterbilt continues to build trucks with owner-operators in mind—even as
trucks have changed so signifcantly, whether in exterior form or in technologies to improve the freighthauling function. “Our products have to maintain a premium position, not just for price or desirability but from a design position as well,” Acker says. “We want people in our trucks to feel like they’re in a luxury vehicle. I’d say Peterbilt has captured that for a good 50 of our 75 years. Te moment people started living in trucks is the moment they required them to be more comfortable.” And while plenty of veterans lean toward the traditional models that they know and love, Acker points out that younger owner-operators ofen favor aero designs. “It’s their business, and they want to run their business efectively and take advantage of the fuel efciency characteristics of a 579 instead of that 389,” Acker says. “Tere’s a little bit of balancing act for owner-oper-

ators. Te fact that we’re dedicating resources and design engineering to keep the traditional products up to pace for what owner-operators want is a testament to the strength of that market. We’re not walking away from our roots.” When it comes to an iconic image of American trucking, the Mack bulldog backs down from nobody. The brand has taken quite a bite out of the heavy-duty construction market in recent years. Depending on body confguration, the awesome Titan can move the equipment that moves mountains and then move the mountains themselves, one massive dump load at a time. And while a trucker can appreciate its sheer size and strength, the Titan’s not a truck for moving general freight across the country. Mack has quite an on-highway legacy as well, and has marketed to owner-operators with oferings such as the classic Cruiseliner cabover equipped with a
sleeper box, recalls Phil Cary, Mack highway segment manager. But times—and trucks—have changed. “I think any owner-operator is getting a little more savvy with fuel consumption, and I think Mack plays into that quite well,” Cary says. “When it afects somebody’s bottom line, it only takes a matter of time until a light bulb goes off in their head: ‘Tis classic truck is really, really nice, but it’s not allowing me to reach my full earnings potential.’ ”
PROFIT CAN BE STYLISH, TOO
Cary’s rough formula (assuming $4/gal. diesel) is that every 1% improvement in fuel economy adds $600 to the operator’s pocket—and that certainly makes an aero truck attractive in a diferent way. Te brand’s current highway push is led by the Pinnacle, including a high-rise 70-in. sleeper that is “an excellent owner-operator truck,”

Cary says. For a more classic look, Cary suggests the axle-forward Pinnacle variation. And, he adds, “you can dress up an aero truck just as much as you would a classic anyway.” The Pinnacle’s Grand Touring trim package is aimed squarely at owner-operators, with a buttontucked interior along with a number of amenities such as fat screen televisions and refrigerators. Te Rawhide Edition takes customization even further. Te package, installed on the axle-forward Pinnacle, comes with touches such as a “Texas bumper,” a big sun visor, 7-in. bullhorn exhaust stacks, chrome trim, and polished aluminum air and fuel tanks. “As an old-time Mack guy, since ’74, I’ve seen the transition and how our product has grown, and it amazes me to this day to get in that truck, the distinctive sound of closing the door,” Cary says. “Nothing could be

more comfortable for a driver than to have everything wrapped around them—that nice interior, everything convenient to your fngertips.” International Truck has a corporate lineage that predates internal combustion engines, but the truck maker grabbed headlines and plenty of magazine covers when it introduced the LoneStar in 2009: a fat-out premium, owner-operator tractor that was ahead of its time. Both aerodynamic and undeniably distinctive, the LoneStar had the misfortune of coming out just as the Great Recession was kicking in—and as truck buyers ducked and waited for a recovery. But it’s a testament to International’s forwardthinking that the trucks are now more and more visible on the road, both in growing numbers and because of the still-distinctive looks. Navistar also continues to make its 9900 traditional model, and its best seller is the aerodynamic ProStar. Te LoneStar was designed “to

bridge the gap” between the two, explains Jodi Presswood, vice president and general manager of the heavy-duty truck product line for Navistar. The irony, as Presswood points out, is that the “new” front-end styling is borrowed directly from a 1930s International pickup truck. For the more budget-conscious operator, but one who still wants what he or she wants, the ProStar is available with several trim levels, including International’s long-lived Eagle “top-of-the-line” package featuring both interior and exterior touches. As with the other truck makers, International focuses on improving truck fuel efciency as well as on reducing some costs that may not be the first thing an owner-operator considers when buying a new truck, such as serviceability and long-lasting components that keep the cost of ownership in check. Indeed, International is heavily
promoting an uptime initiative “that will help the operator make money.” “We provide vehicles that appeal to the owner-operator because they’re attractive and customizable. We provide lots of choices so they can pick what they want,” says Presswood. “We’ve got great looking trucks.”
BELLS AND WHISTLES THAT PAY
Top-end trim sets are attractive, but there are plenty of other choices on today’s trucks that are designed to beneft the bottom line. Among the most talked about, both by truck makers and by drivers at the truck stop diner, is the matter of automated transmissions: To shif or not to shif, that is the question. Manufacturers insist there’s little room for debate. While wind-tunnel tweaks are now focused on fractions of one percent improvement, the industry has made great strides in powertrain efciency. Te integration of engine,
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
transmission, and axles is pushing Class 8 fuel economy to 10 mpg and beyond. And the sales pitch to fleets is straightforward: Te new generation of automated transmissions can make your new drivers as good, fuel economy-wise, as your best veteran drivers. While that may not ofend every successful owner-operator, it likely won’t sell them many trucks either. Still, truck makers insist there are advantages to letting technology do some of the work. Te Western Star 5700XE, for instance, comes with a Detroit DD15 engine and optimized DT12 automated manual transmission.
SHIFTING TECHNOLOGIES
“Less fatigue,” Western Star’s Lemieux says simply. “We know there are a lot of drivers out there who prefer a manual transmission. Tey want to be in control; they like the feel. But, especially in urban areas or stop-and-go trafc, an automated transmission really does reduce fatigue and improve comfort.” Te good news is that truck buyers still have the option to deselect an AMT and go with the manual package of their choosing—and save signifcantly on the purchase price. Whether or not a driver is giving up fuel economy would depend on his or her skill in shifing manually. Likewise, truck and engine makers are now offering telematics systems that can monitor a truck while it’s on the road, detect and report problems, and even schedule maintenance. A single-truck operator may be reluctant to invest in a system that permits feet dispatchers to immediately deal with delivery-threatening problems, but the consequences of a broken truck are all the more important to a feet of one. Mack’s GuardDog Connect, for instance, is designed to proactively connect the truck operator “in real
Mack’s Rawhide interior touches time with real people” to coordinate repairs—whatever is required to get that truck up and running again. “Downtime afects that single truck driver far more than it does a national feet,” Cary says. “It can beneft everybody, but I think it’s actually more of an advantage to that owner-operator who can’t call for another truck to take the load.” Safety options such as roll stability, adaptive cruise control, and collision mitigation systems are more and more common, although pricey—until an operator calculates the costs of an accident. “A [key] piece moving forward is to make sure there’s a payback equation,” Navistar’s Presswood says. “Te various industry associations really need to think about how we can get insurance companies to provide incentives for the purchase of these safety systems so that there is a less dramatic and more rational payback.”
WHO ARE THESE GUYS?
Successful owner-operators— the kind who buy new, premium trucks—share some traits in common. Specifcally, they know what has worked well for their own
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
operations and they keep up with “the latest and greatest” in recent developments, Peterbilt’s Acker suggests. So it’s important for truck buyers to help dealers understand specifc application and operational needs. “Tey need to maximize efciency up front, but it’s very important for owner-operators to always consider what their trade cycle is going to be,” Acker says. “Tey want to be able to maximize the resale value of their equipment.” For Mack’s Cary, customers looking for premium trucks are typically single-truck operators or a feet of maybe fve trucks. He or she may do some specialized hauling, and has a good relationship with regular customers and brokers. “He’s never, never hauling empty,” Cary says. “He sets a high standard for himself. He sets high standards for the equipment he operates. His customers like to see him pull up in that type of vehicle: That’s an outward expression of who that driver is.” Simply, as long as there are owneroperators, there will be owner-operator trucks. Te choice is still up to you, American trucker. AT

o cut energy costs while establishing a more environmentally sustainable business footprint, Germany’s Deutsche Post DHL began its “GoGreen Program” almost eight years ago. Te program targets a carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction of 30% by 2020 against a 2007 baseline level. Since reducing CO2 emissions directly correlates with reducing energy consumption, DHL, which operates 89,000 vehicles globally, engaged in a host of eforts,

i.e., using more renewable energy sources, more efciently managing trafc fows via technology, and modernizing its global ground delivery feet with alternative drive systems. Early on, DHL settled on electric vehicles (EVs) largely because those vehicles do not produce CO2. One problem with DHL’s strategy, however, revolved around fnding an electric vehicle maker that could build the kind of easy-to-maintain EVs the company desired.
HL says electric vehicles are especially suited for driving in stop-and-go trafc because they emit nearly no air or noise pollution, thus making them extremely environmentally friendly. But fnding the right EV maker was proving difcult, so DHL took a different approach. In 2010, the company helped fund a startup venture called StreetScooter GmbH to construct what the global delivery company dubs tailor-made EVs. Ten, in December 2014, it purchased the venture outright, including all the development and production rights to electric vehicle models. Key to the design of the StreetScooter is its ability to handle 200 stops and starts per day and be in service up to 300 days a year. Te body of the vehicle is a hair over 15 f. in length, and the vehicle ofers a daily range of up to 74.5 mi. with a maximum range of 49.7 mi. in stop-and-go mail delivery service. To date, some 11,800 units out of DHL’s global feet of 89,000 vehicles are equipped with a variety of alternative drive systems, fuels and aerodynamic modifcations. Tis includes more than 300 EVs, a third of which are
now StreetScooter models. DHL adds that StreetScooter GmbH, which employs a staf of 70, is a spin-of of RWTH Aachen University and a consortium of about 80 industrial companies in the automotive industry and related sectors. Since 2013, StreetScooter has built about 200 EVs annually at the former Talbot/Bombardier plant in Aachen, Germany, which is also where the EV maker’s headquarters is based. DHL notes that StreetScooter unveiled its frst prototype back in 2012, with its frst pre-series vehicles going into service with DHL in 2013. About 20 StreetScooter EVs are already working as part of a special “pilot project” to craf CO2-free deliveries in the city of Bonn, Germany. Nearly 50 more StreetScooters are being used by various DHL sites across Germany, and the company expects 100 StreetScooters to be in operation by the middle of this year. “The StreetScooter is not only carbon-efficient and quiet, it has also been developed according to the requirements of everyday postal requirements and so perfectly matches our needs,” notes Jürgen Gerdes, corporate board member for mail at Deutsche Post DHL.

Use of hydraulic hybrids in Orlando has allowed for expanded range, more customers and less cost
O
Over five years ago, when Mayor Buddy Dyer launched Green Works Orlando, his vision of an environmentally friendly community encompassed almost every aspect of life in the Central Florida city and its surrounding area. Taking up the challenge along with other city departments was the Fleet & Facilities Management Div. Daryl Greenlee, Orlando’s fleet manager, oversees an operation with 2,500 vehicles and pieces of equipment used by city departments. The division provides maintenance, repairs and replacement of trucks, police cars, fire apparatus, and a fleet of 79 front-line and 12 reserve solidwaste refuse units. “Over the next three years, all of our residential garbage trucks will be converted to hydraulic hybrid models,” Greenlee relates. “We’re in the process of replacing 30 residential refuse trucks with Autocar E3 models powered by Parker hybrid drive systems and fitted with Heil automatic side loader bodies. We’ve had nine of these units on the road for
28 American Trucker/March 2015
just over 18 months and nine more are scheduled to be delivered.” Supplied by Kenworth of Central Florida, the trucks feature the Parker RunWise Advanced Series hybrid drive systems along with a Cummins ISL9 engine, a proprietary power drive unit (PDU), hydraulic pump/motors, and composite bladder accumulators. Energy recovered from the vehicle’s braking system is stored and used to power the truck each time it accelerates. As the truck approaches highway speed, the PDU transfers from hydrostatic drive to mechanical drive, maximizing operating efficiency. “While the initial cost of the hydraulic hybrids is higher ... the premium is easily justified,” Greenlee says. “In our fleet, the Autocar E3s using the Parker RunWise hybrid system have been using up to 50% less fuel than our diesel units, which we’ve verified with telematics. Not only is that a substantial savings in fuel costs, the truck’s emissions are significantly reduced. “Some of the savings we’re real-
Go to
izing are also coming from lower maintenance costs,” Greenlee continues. “On our diesel trucks, we perform three or four complete brake jobs every year. At $3,000 each, that’s at least $90,000 over a 10-year service life. With the hydraulic hybrids, which use brake energy recovery to slow the vehicle, we’re projecting that we won’t need to replace any brakes until year 10.” Other savings contributing to the return on investment are longer service intervals, facilitated by having smaller engines to power the hydraulic hybrid system, and the elimination of a transmission. Additionally, with smoother deceleration, tire life appears to be better, lowering tire costs. No steer tires have been replaced on the Autocar E3s, Greenlee reports. Also, the majority of the hybrid trucks are only on their second set of drive tires, as compared to as many as three sets on the diesel units. There are productivity improvements as well. “After the initial deployment, we discovered that some routes using hydraulic hybrids are faster by an hour,” says Greenlee. “We actually had supervisors follow those trucks to see why and soon realized the faster times were due to the quicker acceleration with the hybrid systems. That can translate into longer routes with fewer trucks and the ability to serve new neighborhoods without increasing fleet size.” Green Works Orlando is a vision to transform the fifth largest city in Florida into one of the most environmentally friendly communities in the nation. And the city’s Fleet & Facilities Management Div. is helping to achieve that goal at the lowest possible cost.

Bella Rose Transport Owner: Randy Bellrose Location: North Canton, OH Randy Bellrose is a refrigerated hauler who drives a 1999 Freightliner FLD and pulls a 2006 Wabash 53-ft. refrigerated trailer. He runs under his own authority and relies largely on brokered freight.
How is maintenance handled? How do you minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? I don’t have a shop, so I job out most of my maintenance other than small things I can handle myself. Major repairs are jobbed out to our local Freightliner dealership. I change the oil and grease every 15,000 mi. I park at a repair shop in Canton, OH, and have them check the trucks as ofen as possible. If they fnd a problem, I have them fx it immediately.
What are three challenges you face with your maintenance program? How do you resolve each of these? Number one, ensuring that I don’t have roadside breakdowns through scheduled PMs. Number two, I prevent corrosion by going to the truck wash on a regularly scheduled basis (at least two to three times a month) and especially afer I’ve traveled through an area where they’ve used road salt or ice-melt spray. Te third challenge is tires, which I resolve by keeping a close eye on wear patterns and pressure. I check for proper infation at least once a week. I also do rotation and alignments regularly.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer? I replace when maintenance costs get out of hand. Tis can easily be monitored through a good accounting system.
What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA compliance for your truck and trailer? Since I’m a one-truck operation at this time, I take care of my own compliance with careful maintenance records, logging correctly, and by keeping up with the changes. I read as much as possible and listen to the Road Dog network on SiriusXM radio.
What do you enjoy most about trucking and hauling the type of freight you do? What does your company do best? I enjoy the freedom of hauling the loads I want, at the rate I need and the places I want to go. I ensure the on-time delivery of the products I haul. Refrigeration W ithout question, environmental protection has been a driving force behind the latest developments in transport refrigeration. “Compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 final emissions and California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards reduces our carbon footprint and generates fuel savings,” says Doug Lenz, vice president of product management and marketing at Thermo King. “In anticipation of the European Union’s 2014 F-Gas regulation, Thermo King selected R-452A (DuPont Opteon XP44), a refrigerant that has about half the global warming potential of refrigerant currently used,” Lenz adds. “R-452A, which might be applicable in North America in the future, offers the same cooling capacity, pull-down and fuel efficiency performance as refrigerants currently in use.” Patrick McDonald, product manager-trailer products at Carrier Transicold’s Truck, Trailer & Rail Div., says the most significant recent advancement in the company’s trailer refrigeration units has been the upgrade to Tier 4-compliant models. “That not only responds to the EPA’s emissions requirements,” he states, “but does so in a way that delivers greater refrigeration capacity using less engine power and as a result, significantly lowers fuel consumption. “Telematics can also help improve operational efficiency,” McDonald continues. “Beyond tracking asset location, telematics can enable changes to operational parameters of the refrigeration system—for example, once a unit is loaded or unloaded or exits a designated area. These systems can also help ensure units are set correctly and running properly throughout a trip. Control examples include starting the unit, selecting temperature setpoints, switching between continuous and start-stop operating modes, defrosting units, clearing alarms, or running diagnostic routines.” Through Carrier Transicold’s DataTrak protocol, telematics providers can access unit information and data can be transmitted to a central location to monitor refrigeration unit activity and comply with a fleet’s recordkeeping requirements. These include the S-600M multi-temperature unit and the S-700 single-temperature unit with shorepower capabilities, as well as the S-600 and C-600 single-temperature designs. Precedent models feature the manufacturer’s new Diesel Direct Electric architecture that utilizes a compressor directly coupled to the diesel engine and electrically driven fans and other operating components. Carrier Transicold’s current trailer models are the hybrid Vector 8500 single-temp unit and the Vector 8600MT multi-temp unit. Additionally, the company’s X4 Series includes the 7500 and 7300 single-temp units. All are based on a suite of ecoForward technologies consisting of an engine, sensors and electronic control modules that communicate with the refrigeration unit’s control system.
