N
N o, I caught up with Sean Graham, president of trailer aer mic device maker Freight Wing, at the 2011 Technology & M e Council’s annual meeting to talk about the wholesale changes in how fleets now view the topic of trailer aerodynamics. Graham got into the business of designing and building devices to improve the aerodynamics of dry trailers back in 2004, believing— Aerodynamic van quiet rightly as it turns out—that trailer devices are “smoothing” the airflow around these big boxy shapes would reduce overall now mainstream fuel consumption for big rigs, thus saving money. Over the years, I’d bump into him, and his product display would be tucked away in the back corner of any number of trade shows and conferences, set way out on the periphery, far from the “serious” products in the trucking business. In fact, at the Mid-America Trucking Show one year, I found him book-ended by folks peddling barbecue sauces and toy truck models. Today, however, it’s a very different story. “It’s really kind of amazing how the industry’s view of trailer aerodynamics has shifted,” Graham told me. “We’ve also got a lot more competitors out there now, as well. That just shows that the market for trailer aerodynamic devices is really strong, and it wouldn’t be so strong if these devices didn’t save fuel and money for fleets.” It’s all a heady change from the way things used to be in the trailer aerodynamics business. T
he Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) and Rush Truck Centers (RTC) will receive a $5 million grant from the EPA to help provide special financing for pre-2007 used trucks retrofitted with SmartWay-verified emissions and idle reduction technology. The money—awarded through the EPA SmartWay Clean Diesel Finance program—helps guarantee loans to buy retrofitted used tractortrailers at RTC locations in southern states. W.M. “Rusty” Rush, president & CEO of Rush Enterprises, parent of RTC, said the program offers a cleaner, greener, economical option for Class 8 buyers who might not be able to afford the increased cost of a 2010 emissions-compliant truck. “The issue with green efforts in trucking has always been about the price of the [greener] product and support infrastructure relative to potential savings,” Rush said during a media briefing at RTC’s 2010 Technician Skills Rodeo in San Antonio, TX. “Going green makes sense when it’s economical, and this program is

Dubbed the Clean Trucks Make Cents program, the finance effort is focused on the eight Southeastern states that make up EPA Region 4. RTC said the program will finance up to 100% of the purchase or lease price of a pre-2007 tractor-trailer and is designed to help individual truckers and small-business operators. www.rushtruckcenters.com

n trucking we think of “the team” as the trucker, dispatcher, safety department and sales. Many teams today, though, are made up of smaller groups of individuals called units. The trucker and trucking company form one unit in the scope of the entire logistics team. The other units include freight brokers, third-party logistics companies (3PL), shippers and receivers. The trucking company, freight broker or 3PL should work for each other’s benefit so their services are of value to the shippers and receivers for which they haul. To create a well-oiled shipping machine, each of these separate entities needs to become a unit of the winning team. To be a successful team member, everyone must work toward the same goals by understanding responsibilities; having common goals; dealing with the unexpected; resolving conflict; sharing information; developing efficiency; maintaining the team; communicating completely; and developing trust. The most important component of keeping a team focused on the goal is trust. Everyone needs to work constantly at earning the trust of other team members. Actions speak louder than words. ITS said the ability for potential customers to see where available trucks are will increase load-matching eďŹƒciency. “This is the second installment of a program that began in May that allows our carriers an easy way to communicate when and where their available equipment is. here are plenty of software pack- carriers settle delivery disputes drivers and vehicles. But for fleets or even ages on the market today that help or allow for the tracking of their owner-operators looking for a low-cost solution, the options are more limited. A new offering from TechnoCom and available through AT&T is looking to corner that market and provide the information needed to accurately identify where a particular truck is located, or to end that ongoing dispute with a customer who refuses to believe an effort was made to make his delivery. The TechnoCom Location-Smart workforce solution is designed for just these needs. It is also ideal for anyone providing roadside service, said John Moscatelli, director-industry solutions practice for AT&T. “It allows these fleets to utilize [non-employees] and get location information from them without the expense of adding any hardware,” Moscatelli said. There are said to be no upfront installation costs or monthly fees. A customer just needs to set up an AT&T billing account so that charges can be applied when the service is used. A big advantage of the product, Moscatelli added, is that there are no hardware or software costs involved. The customer only pays on a per-use basis, making it cost-effective for one-time use. In addition, the product is not carrierspecific. Although AT&T is selling the product, it can also work through phones serviced by most major carriers. The way the unit works, Moscatelli explained, is that a driver calls in to the office and selects the option that allows a computer to access either GPS phone data or cell ID number. That information is then transmitted through TechnoCom’s server to the carrier’s office, identifying where the driver is at that point in time. Using actual GPS data from equipped phones can almost pinpoint the exact location of the driver. Using the cell ID number is not as exact, giving a location of no more than 500 meters. www.att.com

Drivers who violate these restrictions would face federal civil penalties of up to $2,750 for each offense and disqualification of their commercial driver’s license (CDL) for multiple offenses. Additionally, states would suspend a driver’s CDL after two or more violations of any state law on handheld use. Carriers that allow drivers to use handheld cell phones while driving would face a maximum penalty of $11,000. ban on all handheld cell phone use when operating a commercial vehicle is being proposed by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT). The regulations would completely ban all handheld cell phone use by truck and bus drivers while operating their vehicles. “Every time a commercial truck or bus driver takes his or her eyes off the road to use a cell phone, even for a few seconds, the driver places everyone around them at risk,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This proposed rule will go a long way toward keeping a driver’s full attention focused on the road.” The proposed rule is coming from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and would

ruck-Lite has released a new LED lighting package that is said to improve visibility for both drivers and oncoming vehicles. The lights come in a new snow plow kit. “Battling winter’s harsh conditions and often poor visibility is a constant challenge for our highway departments and municipalities when plowing day and night,” said Craig Hefright, director of new product & market development. According to the company, the new lights are able to withstand
the impact generated by a plow’s vibration that traditional halogen lights cannot absorb. The lights are DOTcompliant, significantly brighter than traditional lamps, and have a longer life expectancy with increased durability and lower current draw, Truck-Lite said. The kit includes right- and lefthand lamp assemblies as well as a harness. Each assembly includes an LED headlamp, bracket and pedestal turn signal lamp. www.truck-lite.com

erofficient, a provider of aerodynamic enhancement devices for heavy-duty truck trailers, recently announced that its three newest products have all been verified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ) SmartWay program. Each of the new fairings is estimated to generate at least 5% in fuel savings, the company said. The products verified by the EPA include Aerofficient’s two fixed side-fairing products (Models FFGW and FFTI) and its “Slider” side-fairing product (Model ASFS), which automatically expands or contracts when the trailer’s axles
Aerofficient said its fairings result in a fuel savings of up to 5%. are moved forward or rearward. All of the verified products feature patent-pending “Flexion” technology, which permits the fairings to bend in or out 90 deg. to help enable them to pass over obstructions without sustaining damage. According to
Aerofficient, the fairings are designed to function for 10 years or 1-million mi. All Aerofficient side-fairing products utilize a patent-pending clamp system to permit fast installation without drilling holes in the trailer. The company said it takes about two hours of work to install the fixed fairing products and four hours for the Slider. The products also feature an engineered plastic panel material to help ensure durability. The fairings are built to hold their shape when subjected to temperature extremes and to resist ice and snow packing. www.aerofficient.com

Blame it on the rain
W
t to come up with new topics each certain subjects that cannot be covsn’t been that long since I addressed price increases for truck tires and retreads, but recent events indicate that there may be no end in sight. Heavy rainfall in the major natural rubberproducing countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam has a number Weather in Asia is damaged of rubber plantaRecent estidriving up prices tions. mates by the Dept. Disaster Prevenfor tires here of tion and Mitigation in Thailand indicated that about 4.8% of agricultural land (about 1.9 million acres) in that country alone was damaged by flooding. Making matters worse is the fact that the apparent global recovery has increased the worldwide demand for natural rubber by the tire companies. It’s reached the stage where current inventories can only account for about 70 days of demand, which is the lowest level in 10 years. Since natural rubber is not like oil (you can’t just pump more out of the ground), production cannot be easily increased when most of the world’s supply is dependent on small farmers in Southeast Asia. And even though the long-term prospects for rubber tree production appear to be infinite, unlike oil reserves that will eventually run out, they remain an agricultural product that is subject to all the accompanying variables. Like any supply-and-demand model, prices go up when demand increases. During the recession at the beginning of 2009, for example, natural rubber prices were around $0.70/lb. A year later, the price doubled to W
12 American Trucker/ er/March 2011
$1.40/lb. By the end of 2010, the price had risen to over $1.90/lb. A typical truck tire has about 30 lbs. of natural rubber, so if you do the math, that’s a $36 increase per tire in the price of raw material for one tire over the past two years. While I am hardly qualified as an expert on natural rubber futures, I don’t believe the situation is going to improve over the next 12 months so fleets must brace themselves for more increases in truck tire prices. In my opinion, all of this is adding up to major changes in how fleets deal with truck tire maintenance, service, repair and retreading. Whereas maintenance departments may have been reluctant to approve section repairs in the past, they may have to find ways to keep those tires in service so the casing asset is not lost. And any fleet that still believes it can operate without a retread program is destined to experience higher tire costs per mile. Just do the math. An 8% increase on a retread costing $150 is $12. Apply the same 8% price increase to a new tire costing $350 and the fleet pays an additional $28 per tire. That $16 per tire difference is only going to widen as the cycle continues, which means the economic advantages of retreads have never looked better. I honestly don’t think truck tire prices will fall as long as natural rubber remains part of the equation. There are just too many uncontrollable factors that impact the already thin line between supply and demand. As it stands right now, one of the main reasons for higher prices is the weather in Southeast Asia. While the rains have subsided, it could be a while before production can return to normal levels and restore inventories to meet expected demand. AT

Start calling Mastering the cold call could increase your revenue
W
ith all the changes coming ab out in trucking—from the proposed hours-ofservice regulations to CSA, along with the improving economy creating a shortage of trucks, drivers and carriers to haul the nation’s freight—now is the best time for small carriers to get a larger piece of the freight and hauling revenue pie. To get started, you’ll need to master the cold call. Most people in business fear the “cold call,” that first contact with a potential customer. It isn’t any different in trucking; the fear of rejection tends to create reluctance to initiate a call. Exactly how do you make a cold call? Develop a specific goal for your calls. First and foremost, it’s not a

sales call. “Wait a minute!” you say. “Then why am I calling?” Two reasons: One is to glean information to determine if this company is one with which you can do business. You need to know if you have the capacity to handle their shipping requirements. Are they going to fit into the current lanes you run, or do you need to develop new ones? Granted, you may not get answers to these questions, but it’s worth the time investment for the potential revenue you’d receive. Second, the call serves as a way to make a follow-up appointment with each potential customer to close the deal. Is this shipper of value to you, and will you be of value

to them? This is called the process of elimination. Research your prospects and the markets they are in. Cold calling isn’t about grabbing a phone or knocking on a door and asking if you can haul their loads. Effective cold calling comes from knowledge. The more you know about a potential customer’s business, the more successful you’ll be at signing up direct-ship customers. You need the following information to prepare yourself for the call: ◗ What does your prospect manufacture or ship? ◗ Where do these loads go? ◗ Are they full truckloads or lessthan truckload? ◗ Who is your competition for these loads? (Are they a large or small carrier? Does a 3PL handle the company’s logistics?)

L d the harnesses related to them used to be just m mponents on a truck. With CSA now in effect, t hese components have taken on added import single burned-out bulb could quickly escalate into a serious CSA issue. Whether repairing or replacing lights, under the new regulatory environment, longevity and reliability are now crucial elements to consider when choosing a light. “Customers are looking for long-life products, products that [assist in] ways so they can do their jobs better, faster and with less expense,” says John R. Grote, vice president, sales & marketing for Grote Industries. “Our LED technology produces light closer to the color spectrum of the sun, so workers see better with less eye strain, meaning more productivity and fewer mistakes and downtime,” he explains. The Grote Trilliant 36 uses less power than a sealed beam at one-eighth the cost of a traditional PAR 36 over its service life, the company says. It is also replaced less often, shines three times brighter, and is built with parts that can be recycled. Fewer parts also figured into the development of Grote’s Infrared Motion Sensor dome light series, which eliminates traditional switches and wires. The company’s recently introduced MicroNova DOT, one of the smallest marker lamps available, comes in a dual-intensity version. Grote says fleets that install MicroNova DOT lamps increase street visibility without risking damage to the lamps during operation that is common with larger lamps. Truck-Lite Co.’s Brad VanRiper, senior vice president of research & development and chief technology officer, says CSA is pushing fleets to demand more quality and reliability from lighting products. He says customers have a list of four major needs: safety through advanced visibility; quality and reliability; cost-effective solutions; and lower total cost of ownership. Truck-Lite is focused on a variety of customer needs, including forward lighting and education efforts to ensure the products purchased are the most appropriate choices for their intended application. “From the industry-first 7-in. round LED DOT-compli-

ant headlamp to our 4- and 7-in. auxiliary products [work, spot and flood lamps], great strides have been made to offer the most extensive product line,” says VanRiper. New products that can solve problems, lower cost per mile, and increase the bottom line are all objectives of Peterson Manufacturing Co. and the fleets it serves, according to Mark Assenmacher, director of marketing. “A critical problem that causes equipment to fail and leads to downtime is corrosion,” explains Assenmacher. “It is wreaking havoc on the many parts of the tractors and trailers and causing equipment to fail prematurely. The corrosion caused by exposure to the elements and the many types of chemicals used on the highways today … form a ‘chemical cocktail.’” Aimed specifically at combating that chemical cocktail, Peterson and Maxi-Seal Harness Systems, a subsidiary of Peterson Manufacturing, created the Defender, a modular harness and LED lighting system that comes with a 10-year warranty against corrosion and defects. The company says it is easy to route and install and is virtually maintenance-free. Combining Peterson’s Piranha LED lights and the Defender, which includes Maxi-Seal’s exclusive Power-Seal Technology, is said to make the system impervious to moisture or corrosion. “Eliminating only one repair in the trailer’s life would more than pay for the Defender. cross the country, overhaulers are singing the same tune. Business is strong for a confluence of reasons: the upswing in the economy, a large group of trucks that have reached their replacement cycle, and a dash by fleets to increase capacity in a hurry. “We’re swamped with business,” says Lee Menke, founder of R&R Engine and Machine in Akron, OH. “We’ve been swamped for the last couple of years.” Menke added that “fleets didn’t want to spend money when the economy was bad so they reman’d engines, and now they want to take the old equipment and put it on line so they’re remanning those.” Menke’s shop was founded in 1967 and is an authorized OEM engine dealer for 19 different manufacturers. It handles in-frame and outof-frame work, off-road and overthe-road equipment. It has 16 bays and employs 35 people. “We have a complete machine shop and do all the machining ourselves. Business has been so good that the company added an addition last year and will begin construction this spring on another 7,800 sq. ft. to the service bays and a 900-sq.-ft. addition to the parts department. Although there are precise definitions for remanufactured engines compared to rebuilt engines, many in the industry use the words interchangeably. In a rebuilt engine, components that appear to still be functional are cleaned and reused. Only parts that are worn or broken are replaced. In other words, the re-

pair is done up to the level of failure. In a remanufactured or reman, all components are disassembled and thoroughly cleaned or replaced and brought up to OE specs. The engine is tested to original equipment standards. This last part, going back to OEM specs, is usually where the line is drawn between rebuilt and reman; however, many rebuilders will bring a component to OE specs, too, even though they don’t replace all of the parts. One of the benefits of bringing an engine to OE specs is that it receives the latest changes. “When we reman an engine, it goes back to OEM or better specs,” Menke says. “We also put in all the updates as we go along—the computer systems, injectors, emissions systems—they’re all updated.” “The reman business is strong because people are keeping trucks longer,” says Bill Gager, executive vice president of the Production Engine Remanufacturers Assn. “Fleets are

A Caterpillar engine for a haul truck is tested after receiving an overhaul at B&G Machine. repairing trucks that have been sitting. When business was slow, they started cannibalizing the trucks, taking parts from one for another until times got better. Now, [times are] better.” He notes that despite the robust sales of Class 8 trucks last year, there are still not enough trucks on the road to handle the growing capacity. That’s where engine overhauling comes in. “There’s still demand out there for more shipping because business is better.” David Bianchi, vice president of sales and marketing for B&G Machine Inc. in Seattle, WA, notes that his company, which has been in business for over 50 years, overhauls mostly mine equipment like big haul truck engines, scrapers, graders and large bulldozers. He has noticed over the years that “the way people maintain equipment either for mining or over-the-road is similar.” He says that what shops like his are experiencing in off-road is almost exactly the same as what OTR overhaulers are seeing. “A lot of our customers laid their equipment up in 2008 and 2009.
20 American Trucker/ er/March 2011
They just didn’t run it,” he says. During the tough economic years, fleets went from maintenance intervals based on hours or miles to condition-based monitoring, Bianchi adds. This means they did things like increase oil sampling and other fluids to stretch the life of the engine based on the results.
REALITY SETS IN “That works in the short term, but sooner or later you need to do an overhaul—and that time has just caught up to us,” Bianchi notes. “That’s why business is better. Things have become more normal to where equipment that has been conditionbased monitored now needs the work. At the same time, the economy has picked up, so we’re starting to see sidelined equipment get new life.” What else is driving the move toward remanning engines? Engines are not lasting as long as they once did, according to John Blodgett, a sales and marketing manager at MacKay & Co. in Lombard, IL. The firm’s fleet maintenance surveys of large, small and owner-op-
Go to
erator fleets show that the amount of time between engine overhauls is decreasing. “We think that’s directly related to an influx of EGR engines in 2003 and 2004. They now represent a large part of the operating population,” says Blodgett. “Our surveys show that fleets are not getting the life out of engines as they had in the past. That’s just going to be the cost of doing business going forward. “If you’re buying a used vehicle that’s got EGR, you need to know that you’ll be seeing some additional expenses,” Blodgett continues. “If you listen to the manufacturers, there are concerns about heat, for instance. That may lead to less life.” He adds that fleets last year began bringing out trucks that were parked by the fence. These trucks were older than the rest of the fleet and more likely to need repair. “We’ll see some more come off the fence this year, but the big bump was in 2010,” Blodgett points out. Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst of ACT Research, watches the numbers and they tell him why

reman is booming. “There’s been an underinvestment in new trucks of all fleet sizes since the huge buy-in in 2006. The current fleet is old and tired,” he says. “The average age of the nation’s fleet will peak in 2011, and a lot of old trucks out there are hitting the time when fleets need to think about rebuild and reman… Think about it. Trucks purchased in 2004 are entering their eighth year of service, and there was a colossal number of trucks put into service from ’04 to ’06.” According to Vieth, in the U.S. alone, 209,000 Class 8 trucks were sold in 2004; 258,000 in 2005; and 290,000 in 2006. “If the rule of thumb is 100,000 mi. per year, then the ’04s will have about 800K miles on them. Remanning is now a critical issue for the nation’s fleet.” He notes that in 2010 the economy came back strong, and surveys done by ACT Research showed strong fleet utilization at the beginning of the year before it fell off in the second half. “We think most of the trucks that had been parked
During the tough economic years, fleets went from maintenance intervals based on hours or miles to conditionbased monitoring. in 2007 and 2008 have been pulled back into service,” Vieth says. “We don’t think there’s a lot of capacity out there even considering the sharp uptick in retail sales.”
THE RIGHT FIT As more fleets seek to overhaul engines, they will find better equipped and more sophisticated shops. Bianchi says that B&G has made some large capital expenditures. “We’ve made a lot of investment in the latest technology for surface finishing and tighter tolerances. Having that kind of equipment is what’s allowing us to have
our engines run longer. Newer style engines are a lot more demanding, a lot more temperamental.” “The demand for high accuracy has changed over the years,” explains John Goodman, president & CEO of the Engine Rebuilders Assn. in Crystal Lake, IL. “What has begun to take hold in our industry are machining centers designed and tooled specifically for engines. They’re reaching levels of accuracy to approximate OE specs even when the OEs have trouble meeting them.” Another trend is toward larger shops instead of mom-and-pop facilities. This has to do with machines and diagnostic tools becoming more expensive as well as sole proprietors retiring and not finding a buyer except among larger overhaulers. What should you look for when shopping for a reman shop? “Look to build a relationship with a reman shop in your area and not worry so much about nickels and dimes,” Gager suggests. “A relationship with a reman shop you trust far out trumps saving a few dollars.” AT
A 16 cylinder crankshaft is balanced. Balancing the rotating assembly at overhaul improves the overall performance of engines, says David Bianchi.

Automated washers help fleet remain clean and productive
leet maintenance ty Waste & Recyks about “staying ahead of technology,” he has a few things in mind. “Each year we replace a portion of our fleet and we’ve been growing as well,” he says. “Every set of new vehicles is a bit different, something that can present challenges in both operations and maintenance.” Based near Albany in Clifton Park, NY, County Waste & Recycling Service is one of the area’s largest privately owned waste and recycling companies, serving more than 180,000 residential and about 11,000 commercial and industrial customers in the Capital/Saratoga region and adjoining areas of Massachusetts. Recycling operations are handled by about two-thirds of the company’s 300-truck fleet. To keep the average age of its equipment to a low 1.8 years, Earl says the company purchases between 60 and 100 new trucks annually for both replacement and growth. Most recent acquisitions have been Mack MR Series and TerraPro cabovers fitted with refuse and recycling bodies manufactured by Labrie Environmental Group and Bridgeport Truck Manufacturing. “We were one of the first refuse companies in the U.S. to use the automated collection equipment that is
22 American Trucker/ er/March 2011
now standard in many places,” Earl states. “That has meant adding automated recycling container handling devices and a mix of single and dual cavity refuse bodies to our trucks, and learning how to optimize their performance and reliability.” With its trucks on the front lines of recycling programs in the communities it serves, County Waste & Recycling goes to great lengths to keep up its equipment’s appearance. “At all of our shops, we have a program to wash our trucks daily,” Earl says. “Clean vehicles project a very positive image of our company, and technicians prefer a clean vehicle to work on.”
WASHING MADE EASY Earl admits that using handheld pressure washers and having personnel spend up to two hours to clean a truck is time-consuming and expensive. About three years ago, to address that concern at its main location, the company invested in an automated truck washing facility. “We were building a new 21-bay, 40,000-sq.-ft. facility,” Earl explains, “so we decided to turn our old shop into a wash facility. Now, at the end of every day, drivers go through the wash bay and refuel trucks before they park them.” County Waste & Recycling chose
Go to
the DyChem Automated Fleet Cleaning System for its wash facility. The drive-through solution uses a two-phase application of ecologically safe and biodegradable chemicals and high pressure rinsing to clean vehicles without surfaces being damaged by brushes. “The entire wash and rinse cycle takes only 45 to 60 seconds and consumes just 125 to 150 gals. of water, much of which is captured, filtered and reused,” Earl says. “The savings in labor alone will pay for this system in very little time while we’re also getting a very complete cleaning done on our equipment. That’s also important to us because corrosion has become a much bigger issue.” Earl’s concerns are well-founded. The increasingly corrosive environment for vehicles is partly caused by the use of new types of deicing chemicals. Those solutions are applied to roadways prior to a snowfall. They cling to vehicles and by their very nature attract and absorb moisture. “It’s our goal to provide quality and cost-effective waste and recycling collection services to our customers,” Earl says. “While we need to always stay ahead of the technology curve in many areas of our business, we are working especially hard to field clean and efficient equipment.”
