It’s no secret that the primary tools necessary for keeping today’s trucks up and running are laptop PCs and diagnostic scanning devices, though not many folks in the maintenance ranks are happy about it. That’s because in days past you could keep a truck in good condition with nothing more complicated than wrenches and other hand tools, some good mechanical knowMechanics are how, and access to a good parts supplier. Indeed, back then, being a part-time “shadenow technicians tree mechanic” was part and parcel of being a successful trucker. armed with PCs Those times, however, are rapidly disappearing. Not only are truck maintenance professionals now known as “technicians” rather than “mechanics,” but complex electronic systems are required to maximize a truck’s fuel economy and to make sure the truck conforms to super-strict exhaust emissions rules. “Computers have changed maintenance operations dramatically, and the skills needed are continuing to change as well,” Chad Marti, fleet services manager for Clarke Power Services, which operates 29 repair facilities across nine states, recently told me. “Yet it will do no good to keep wishing for a return to trucking’s mechanical past,” says Dave Reed, a fleet management consultant with Arsenault Associates. “The real facts are simple: This is not 1980; everything is going high-tech; and it will never go back to mechanical. Repair shops can either move up, move over or move out.” That’s the reality in the digital age of trucking. AT

Idle-free warmth I
dle Free Systems has released the Total Truck Heat System, a battery-powered auxiliary heating system to provide warmth and comfort for a truck’s sleeper berth without idling. The system consists of a coolant heater and an auxiliary AGM battery that work together to provide heat for both the truck’s sleeper bunk and the engine, keeping the driver warm and ensuring an easy start in the cold, the company said. According to Idle Free, when the vehicle is shut down, the system uses residual heat generated by the engine and circulates the heated coolant through the bunk’s heater core, the cab’s heater core, and the engine block. The electrical energy needed to move the coolant, monitor the coolant temperature, and maintain interior climate control is provided by the independent auxiliary AGM battery. When the coolant temperature falls

to 140 deg., the system’s diesel-fired heater is automatically activated. The system is capable of producing more than 17,000 Btu per hour. If run continuously, the system will use less than 12 oz. of fuel per hour, the company said. The auxiliary AGM battery can provide power to the system for more than 10 hours. An optional programmable timer is included. www.idlefreesystems.com

Kick apathy to the curb W
ith trucking going through so many changes on multiple fronts and with the immense number of new trucking regulations (13 in 2011 alone) and increased enforcement of others placed on the industry, your vote is needed now more than ever. Being involved in the selection of who will represent you in local, state and national legislative bodies and who will be in the governor’s mansion and the White House has become very important to your business. If you don’t exercise one of the great rights afforded all American citizens over the age of 18, then you may end up playing catch-up trying to run your trucking business. Voting is the first step in determining what laws and regulations are placed on your shoulders. It was proven again how important one vote, your vote, is to our election process in the recent Iowa Caucus. There were only a few votes separating the winner and second-place finisher. As a citizen, you have the right to complain about what happens in Washington and state capitals. The strength of one vote is the power of each citizen. One of my favorite courses when I was in college was meteorology. I was intrigued by how things like barometric pressure changes, dew points and adiabatic temperature rates affected the weather, so I actually paid attention and managed to retain a lot of the information. Which means I totally understand how the weather forecast is exactly that, a forecast. In most cases, modern meteorology can use data on the to create a comRFID technology ground puter model that accupredicts the concan help, if only rately ditions over the next 24 48 hours. But when it it was used to comes to precipitation, they have to account for so many variables that the likelihood is always reflected in a percentage. In other words, a 50% chance of rain is 50-50, so the forecast is correct no matter what happens. However, there are instances where all of the factors are in place for meteorologists to make a 100% prediction that precipitation will fall in some form. The Mid-Atlantic had a hurricane blow through last year and most people were well-prepared for the storm. But we knew what was coming and understood there was a 100% chance of heavy rain. The only question was how much. Unfortunately, forecasting the demand for medium commercial truck tires over the past few years has been far less accurate than the weather. The biggest variable is original equipment (OE), so the continued doubledigit increases in new truck and trailer orders have put tremendous strain on production capacity for every major tire company. In order to be a Tier 1 supplier for an OE truck or trailer manufacturer, there has to be a mechanism in place to ensure that finished equipment is not sitting on blocks waiting for rubber. With severe
16 American Trucker/March 2012
penalties for failing to deliver, it basically means that production for the replacement market is still months away from recovering, so fleets must be prepared. The first preventive step is to communicate regularly with your manufacturers and service providers. National account status helps when you are in desperate need of tires, but local servicing dealers may be sitting on the size and type that you need. Itテ不 almost reached the point where fleets have to forecast their demand for product much like the earth-moving industry has done for years. Most large mines can project the removal dates for every tire on each piece of equipment so they can work with all of their suppliers to make sure they have enough inventory to keep operating in the near and distant future. However, managing the records for a few hundred large mining tires that never leave the site is nothing compared to the thousands of wheel positions that will have to be measured across the continent on a daily basis to make accurate projections for large motor carriers. Given the inevitable shortages and price increases, the timing has never been better for the introduction of radio frequency identification (RFID) tags. If truck tires included RFID technology, the inventory and recordkeeping processes could be streamlined to the point where it becomes cost-effective for every fleet to collect the necessary data for reliable tire forecasts. And tire companies would at least know the aftermarket demand months in advance. It seems like a no-brainer, but the forecast remains mostly cloudy with a 100% chance that this technology continues to stay on the shelf for reasons I do not understand. AT

Fleet expects cost savings with adoption of CNG
It’s all part of the package at Alpine Waste & Recycling. “We offer recycling and composting services, and now we’re replacing our fleet with trucks powered by cleaner-burning compressed natural gas (CNG),” says Shannon Smith, general manager of fleet operations. “These vehicles burn domestic fuel, which helps our country become more energy-independent, and they’re saving us money as well. CNG will continue to be a part of our long-term business model.” Headquartered in Commerce City, Alpine Waste & Recycling is the largest privately held commercial waste and recycling collection company in Colorado. Alpine purchased its first Mack TerraPro natural gas truck in 2009 and has been converting its fleet ever since. The 16 Mack CNG models now in the operation are powered by Cummins Westport ISL G engines, and are equipped with Allison automatic transmissions. Alpine plans to finish converting its entire fleet of trucks to natural gas models within three years. “These CNG trucks cost about 20% more initially than comparable diesel models,” Smith says, “but they’re sav-

ing us about $1,200 per truck monthly, and we intend to operate them for 10 years. Those savings come from fuel costs and because they run cleaner, something we have verified with oil analysis, we can extend service intervals longer than usual.” In addition to fuel cost and maintenance savings, Smith says that Alpine drivers are satisfied with the performance of the Mack TerraPro natural gas model’s power.
PLENTY OF POWER “The trucks develop about 95% of the horsepower of a similar diesel engine,” he reports. “We’re also more than a mile above sea level and we haven’t had any trouble pulling weight at higher altitudes.” Alpine is also realizing savings of $140,000 a year in labor costs by operating an onsite fueling station for the CNG trucks. Partnering with California-based Clean Energy Fuels Corp., the company built a 26-pump natural gas fueling station where its trucks can be refueled overnight without requiring personnel to monitor the process.
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
One challenge with its CNG trucks that Alpine is addressing, Smith relates, is securing training for its maintenance staff. “It’s really something the industry is experiencing,” he says. “When you convert to CNG trucks, you have to think about training and certifying technicians to work on these vehicles. Classes that are available ... are filled quickly, but our suppliers and dealers are helping us meet that challenge.” Each year, Alpine handles more than 300,000 tons of waste. In 2011, the company estimates that its recycling and composting efforts conserved nearly 168,000 cu. yds. of landfill space. Its efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Colorado Association for Recycling has named Alpine as the state’s most outstanding business for its recycling/diversion program. For its fleet, Alpine is investing in the environment as well as saving on operating costs. Founded in 1999 as a single-truck operation, the company has turned its focus into a full package of programs, and is now enjoying annual revenue growth rate of more than 40%.

shop talk MANAGER: Mitch Barker TITLE: Service manager FLEET: Farmers Oil Co., Anthony, KS OPERATION: Specializes in the transportation of liquid petroleum gas products, liquid fertilizers, distillates, and cement throughout the Southwest and Midwest with 90 trucks and 130 trailers.
Right on time Making sure the right parts are on hand at the right time to keep a truck up and running has never been an easy task in the trucking business. But two different sets of regulations—one governing truck exhaust emissions, the other beefing up safety rules—are putting a new squeeze on parts availability, says PROBLEM Mitch Barker, service manager for Farmers Oil in Anthony, KS. As a result, the equipment in Farmers’ operation has become more diverse, particularly with different engine platforms with new aftertreatment systems designed to meet strict 2010 emissions requirements. “You have to carry a lot more parts in stock for the
different engines; and with the regeneration systems, it takes longer to do a preventive maintenance service,” he notes. At the same time, the company is discovering that it must also keep a much tighter rein on its maintenance records due to provisions within the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program established last year. Barker says there is a greater need for lesser used parts than in the past, such as those associated with the widebase tires the fleet runs. “We need to stock more S-cam brackets,” he explains. “Since we haven’t had to order those parts as often before, it can be an easy item to overlook until you go to the shelf and it’s not there.”
The engine, exhaust and brake components on newer model trucks have definitely made maintenance and inventory much more complicated. Since Farmers operates a mixed fleet of Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks, the company decided to jettison its old parts inventory method in favor of Kenworth’s PreConnect system. SOLUTION mierCare “Previously, everything we kept in inventory was on a spreadsheet that had to constantly be manually updated and was very time-consuming and labor-intensive,” Barker explains. He points out that one critical feature of the PremierCare Connect system is that it manages parts inventory, maintenance, fuel and tires regardless of truck make. That’s important as many parts for the same components on Farmers’ Kenworth and Peterbilt models, especially the aftertreatment systems, can’t be interchanged. “We also began equipping all of our new truck and trailers with disc brakes in 2011. We’ve had some challenges regarding parts availability, so keeping a wider range of parts on hand has become much more important,” Barker points out.
Overall, the system has helped Farmers become more efficient in all aspects of inventory tracking, especially costs. It even reminds the fleet when specific parts need to be reordered. That’s been especially beneficial as the company is expanding from one shop in Anthony staffed with five mechanics to a second shop at a new depot in Afton, OK. “As our fleet has diversified between different makes and models, our inventory has had to change with it to accommodate the different parts we now have to keep on hand,” Barker says. “But PremierCare Connect made this transition possible and allows us to maintain our inventories and parts selection to keep our fleet on the road.” Barker says the system allows him to compare pricing from different parts suppliers, eliminating the need to make numerous phone calls before making a purchase decision. Further, since the system is linked to a local Kenworth dealer—Wichita Kenworth in nearby Wichita, KS—he doesn’t have to carry as many parts in his own shop’s inventory.

According to Jamie Lindemuth, marketing coordinator at Truck-Lite, customers also want improved visibility and security while at the same time decreasing the electrical system load and maintenance cost. “Truck-Lite’s white LED technology produces bright, crisp, clean light patterns closer to the color temperature of daylight,” she says. “This technical achievement dramatically improves light output and overall visibility and improves projection distance in forward lighting as well.” Truck-Lite offers drop-in headlamp replacements utilizing an LED array and complex reflector for even light output and streamlined appearance. “Both Truck-Lite’s Super 80 dome lamp with motion sensor and LED perimeter lamp offer superior illumination to the trailer interior and side loading/unloading zones compared to traditional incandescent products,” continues Lindemuth. “Truck-Lite’s newest Sky-Lite product has a snap-in lens assembly resistant to damage from impact.” Sky-Lite is made of polycarbonate and mounts on the upper sidewall of a trailer or body, allowing natural light to enter for increased visibility. The Super 80 with motion sensor responds to movement and body temperature, automatically turning on the light without a switch or timing device. The LED perimeter lamp illuminates the outside foreground of a trailer’s loading/unloading zone. Since introducing its first LED lamps in 1989, Grote Industries has seen the acceptance of the products in the marketplace among fleet and trailer OEMs. “When it comes to lighting, Grote customers are all looking for the same thing, although they may not use the same terminology,” says Tom Draper, marketing manager. “Fleets have always wanted the lowest cost lighting solutions. It took a while for fleet maintenance managers to realize an all-LED solution was vastly superior to incandescents, because they focused on low initial cost. The savings over time come with no- or low-maintenance lighting solutions, not just in terms of maintenance cost, but in the increased uptime that comes with LED solutions and the absence of late or lost deliveries.”
LEDs continue evolving
20 American Trucker/March 2012
The Truck-Lite perimeter LED illuminates the loading/ unloading area of a trailer.
Draper points out that not all LED lamps are the same, though. “Today, budget-grade LED lamps degrade more quickly than quality designs, tend to corrode faster, and cause far more downtime than investment-grade designs,” he says. “Grote focuses on investment-grade, quality LED designs. Higher-quality designs not only pay for themselves in about a year, but barring heavy physical damage, outlast the equipment they’re installed on.” To combat corrosion from salt compounds used to treat roadways in inclement weather, Grote has worked with trailer OEMs to “provide a corrosion-free system that starts with power cords, continues with Grote Ultra-BlueSeal harnesses, and ends with a set of Grote LED lamps for every aspect of trailer lighting,” Draper says. “Over the last couple of years, the biggest concern [of most fleets] has been corrosion prevention,” says Tim Gilbert, director of OEM & fleet sales at Peterson Manufacturing. “As far as lighting-related issues go, the root cause is still the need for better corrosion control. With the maturing of LED light designs and manufacturing processes, the lights themselves are rarely the cause of failures. The source of the problem is corrosion that enters the lighting system and migrates to the light.” To combat that, Peterson partnered with Maxi-Seal Harness Systems to develop the Defender brand. “Defender uses a modular design that decreases assembly and maintenance costs, further lowering a fleet’s long-term total cost,” Gilbert says. “This ensures fewer trailers are subject to costly lighting equipment citations and unexpected maintenance FOR MORE INFORMATION, delays. Value pricing I
Sell customers on your services based on the benefits provided, not the cost
t seems when talking with many independent truckers about the challenges they face, finding decent paying freight is the one issue that raises a trucker’s hackles. Everyone wonders how they can compete with the larger carriers that have the ability to beat their best hauling rate. The answer is simple. Maybe you’re focused on the wrong end of the freightmoving financial spectrum. When you’re a small carrier, the issue of setting the hauling rate can be even more devastating if there are real cost concerns involving volume. The fact is larger trucking companies have far greater capacity to haul loads than a small or microcarrier. In these cases, larger carriers with greater purchasing power and volume have an advantage that can seem insurmountable; however, it doesn’t have to be that way. Small carriers can compete and demonstrate unique value outside of the hauling rate, but it requires you to be an expert in the money issues of your shipper. Here’s a new approach: What is the real cost to a shipper? And how do you provide value to his entire logistics expenditure? One area is in service. When negotiating rates, have information in hand that shows the value of your service and how it can reduce your shipper’s

costs in other areas. This is where being an expert in your customer’s financial issues becomes extremely important. You need to understand where the bottlenecks are in his shipping and receiving operation and then come up with solutions that ease or eliminate the slowdown.
CUSTOMER FIRST First, focus on the customer’s money not on your rate. Second, by knowing their financial situation as well as or better than they do, you’ll address the real issue of cost beyond the freight rate. Third, use real numbers. Show the value of how you’ll reduce or eliminate bottlenecks and save him money. When that savings is subtracted from your freight rate, it’s actually less than the lower rate of the larger carrier. By being the expert on the business issues of the shipper and focusing on true costs, you’ll demonstrate value and knowledge that will ultimately win the contract. Setting a profitable hauling rate is a reflection of knowledge. Most shippers and brokers default to a hauling rate because they have no other comparative context to evaluate carriers. Your job is to instruct
Go to
the shipper on how to differentiate between trucking companies. Don’t try to sell yourself or your carrier; you’ll lose the shipper’s trust. If you want to be successful in obtaining large accounts, never get caught selling. Spend your energy educating them and showing them the value of their money and how the service you provide benefits their bottom line. It’s important to include all the costs required to get a product to its destination. The hauling rate is just one factor in the entire cost matrix. Part of this education is to remind shippers that value comes in service that reduces costs elsewhere in their operation. Here are the questions you need to ask yourself, but make sure you know the answers before talking to your prospective customer. ❑ Do you know the consequences that result from the service the customer purchases from you? Can you quantify those consequences in real dollars, time or risk? If so, move the conversation away from hauling rates and increase the shipper’s confidence in your operation. ❑ Do you know the history of this customer’s experience concerning shipment of his product? If so, frame the positive results your carrier will produce in comparison to

the service failures of others. ❑ Can you provide the very best service to this shipper? Know when you’re the best option; but just as important, know when you’re not. In other words, don’t sell something you can’t provide.
BE THE SHIPPER Think like your customer. Talk about his money and needs, and the conversation will be more compelling to the shipper and profitable for you. Here’s an example of how a small carrier can move his focus from hauling rate to the customer’s money: A trucking company is bringing palletized freight from a supplier to the customer as a regular run for the carrier. The carrier has quoted a round-trip rate to the shipper based on the time requirement the shipper placed on getting the loaded pallets
Go to
from the supplier to his plant. The trucking company observes that the shipper is using new pallets for each load coming from his supplier, yet has to store and dispose of the now-used pallets. The carrier discovers the supplier can just as easily reuse the same pallets for subsequent shipments. He also finds out from the shipper how much the space is costing him to store the used pallets and his cost of disposal. The carrier then presents a proposal for his empty trucks to return the used pallets to the supplier. In the
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
proposal, he offers to haul the pallets for a cost which is below the expense the shipper is currently laying out for storage and disposal. This lowers the cost to the shipper in three areas: storage, disposal, and paying for new pallets for each load coming from his supplier. For the carrier, the pallet return fee goes directly to the bottom line since the cost of the round-trip has already been factored into the hauling rate. When selling the service of your small carrier, focusing on true costs is an almost guaranteed way to win the contract. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. t’s no surprise that fleets large and small keep looking for ways to drive down costs. With the cost of fuel climbing, new-truck sticker prices at record-high levels, and a short supply of drivers putting upward pressure on wages, truckers are looking to squeeze every spare penny they can out of their operations. And that need is providing a wider and growing opportunity for the remanufacturing industry, explains Dave Olsen, CEO of TransAxle. “Clearly, as the age of the vehicle population increases, there is an increasing need for cost-effective, high-quality components, and this is a perfect match for remanufactured or ‘reman’ components,” he says. “Certain product groups such as engines, transmissions and differentials have seen the remanufactured option become the standard, as opposed to [using] new products. In those areas now, remanufactured product represents 90%-plus of all demand,” Olsen pointed out. “This is a result of the sophistication of the reman process and the large premium expected for new alternatives.”

Wright says other conservation points to consider include: ❑ Remanufacturing annually conserves 14 million tons of natural resources (copper, aluminum, iron, steel, petroleum) and reduces solid waste. ❑ Remanufactured goods add several lifecycles to a product with fewer end-of-life products entering the waste stream. ❑ Remanufacturing consumes less energy with an annual carbon dioxide reduction of 28 million tons. “Remanufacturing products plays a critical role in the aftermarket, returning end-of-life parts to original ‘same as new’ condition. At the same time, remanufacturing is good for the economy, the consumer, and the environment,” Wright adds. “As a domestic industry, remanufacturing is very labor-intensive, requiring three to five times the number of people to manufacture the same product, yet remanufacturing also extends the useful life of consumer products.” Of course, it’s the dollar signs—or
American Trucker/March 2012 25

As a result, TransAxle views future demand for reman product as a tremendous growth area, mainly as reman processes get applied to some of the newer products in fleets today. “An example would be the growth of electronic controllers on a typical vehicle today,” Olsen points out. “However, in areas such as a brake shoe, a more balanced demand between new and remanufactured products will be maintained.” First, of course, it’s important to truly define what “remanufacturing” means. According to the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers
Assn. (MEMA), which counts the Motor & Equipment Remanufacturers Assn. (MERA) as one of its divisions, remanufacturing is defined as a standardized industrial process that recovers and recycles end-of-life products called “cores” and returns them to their “sameas-new” or better condition and performance. Robert McKenna, MEMA president & CEO, noted in testimony before the International Trade Commission in February that the use of remanufactured components for heavy trucks as well as lighter vehicles is going to grow thanks to two critical attributes: They cost less, and they require less energy to produce. “Remanufacturing saves 80% of the energy and material used to manufacture equivalent new parts, making it a sustainable and economically viable response to increased global trade pressures, resource scarcity and rising energy costs,” McKenna explains. “For example, considering conservation of natural resources, new automotive starters require nine times more virgin raw materials by weight as compared to a remanufactured starter.” Rob Wright, managing director of automotive remanufacturer Undercar Express, noted in his testimony that followed McKenna’s that traditional manufacturing of complex products require tremendous amounts of energy and raw
materials. His data concludes that, compared to new manufacturing, remanufacturing is estimated to save about 85% of the energy that would have been used to manufacture a comparable new part. “According to the Dept. of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, remanufactured products conserve the equivalent of 400 trillion Btu yearly, which is roughly equal to 69 million barrels of crude oil,” he explains. “This is comparable to electricity savings generated by eight average-size nuclear power plants. Remanufacturing also mitigates the total amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere because of the inherent energy conservation and limits the amount of refuse to be disposed of in landfills.”

For heavy trucks, Catherine Auckland, director of product management for Eaton’s Truck Aftermarket Business, notes that as the trade cycle has lengthened, an overall greater demand for aftermarket components is developing. “Reman transmissions can be a great cost-effective option for owneroperators and fleets, as they are usually available within 24 hours and can result in a faster repair to get trucks back in service quickly,” she says.

the lack thereof—that get the attention of truckers. “Remanufactured parts are on average 20 to 50% below the cost of most new parts, while delivering the same level of quality backed by very competitive warranties,” McKenna noted. As a result, it’s a market that’s only growing in size. MEMA notes that the light side of the U.S. automotive aftermarket (meaning heavyduty truck parts are excluded) consists of over 240 million cars and $185 billion in annual business, with parts sales of about $78 billion with roughly 25% of that comprised of remanufactured parts.
Eaton says that warranty coverage is increasing for reman parts. As remanufacturing processes keep improving, warranties are increasing as well, Auckland notes. “For example, Eaton has expanded its standard warranty coverage to two years regardless of application for its Fuller standard and Fuller Flex Reman transmissions units,” Auckland says. “Because of the quality and protection offered by Eaton Advantage Series clutches and approved lubricants, Eaton now offers an enhanced warranty package of three years on standard reman units when bundled and installed with these products,” she points out.
The quality and precision of the reman process keeps rapidly improving.

To make sure ample supply of reman products remain available to meet demand, both the automotive and trucking industries must recognize the importance of “cores.” Undercar’s Wright used brake systems to exemplify this need, as brakes are the lifeblood of most automotive parts distributors in today’s aftermarket. “The largest segments in the brake category are disc brake pads, rotors, and calipers,” he notes. “The supply and sale of pads and rotors is relatively straightforward because they are disposable products. Calipers, however, are a bit more complex because they can be a remanufactured or cored product.”
CORES RULE
The role of the remanufacturer, Wright says, is to take the used caliper or core provided by the customer and refurbish it to same as new condition. By refurbishing the used calipers, the remanufacturer eliminates the expense of tooling, fabricating, and machining the caliper casting. “The casting simply gets recycled, and the distributor only pays for the value added by the remanufacturer,” says Wright. “This is typically referred to as the ‘exchange’ price.” The underlying premise of this industry is that the distributor owns the core and simply returns cores to the remanufacturer for refurbishing, he explains, yet it is imperative to note that the decision to own a core is made when the distributor decides to get into the caliper business. “The first transaction a distributor has with a remanufacturer is typically when a distributor makes its core investment,” Wright notes. “If you assume that the distributor does not lose any cores, the product line does not change, and sales are constant and flat, the distributor

does not need to buy cores again. Therefore, after the initial transaction, the only out-of-pocket cash for the distributor is the exchange value of the caliper.” In the real world, however, calipers get lost, the product line changes, and, hopefully, sales increase. “In the case of lost calipers, the distributor must recognize the value of his core investment and protect against inventory shrinkage,” he points out. “In the case of product line changes, most remanufacturers offer an annual stock adjustment where a distributor can return older, slower moving product in return for newer, faster moving components.” Even though demand for lowercost components is skyrocketing, it’s not all smooth sailing for the remanufacturing industry, stresses MEMA’s McKenna. That’s because trade barriers, particularly nontariff barriers, are a key obstacle.
BUMPS AHEAD
“With an increasingly competitive global economy, accessing new markets is important for not only selling remanufactured products, but also for sourcing the used goods, or cores, that are the main component part of remanufactured products,” he explains. “As an early trade agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement did not provide for cores to meet origin rules granting dutyfree treatment; the U.S. and Canada made the necessary changes in law to allow for cores to receive dutyfree treatment,” McKenna says. “But Mexico has yet to do so and this is important since about 75% of U.S. motor vehicle parts exports are sent to Canada and Mexico.” In 2011, the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) conducted a survey of 22 companies representing the key remanufacturing sectors, with those making motor

Removing trade barriers is a key goal of the U.S. reman industry. vehicle parts representing onethird of them. Three-quarters of those surveyed export remanufactured products, half of which had encountered trade barriers in such regions as Asia and South America, with China and Brazil being the most mentioned countries for each region. “For instance, Brazil restricts entry of certain types of remanufactured goods, including automotive parts, through import licensing procedures and bans imports of remanufactured goods if the goods are produced domestically. India, another key growth market, also has non-tariff barriers,” says McKenna. In addition to trade barriers, the RIT survey also touched upon the following key areas important to the future growth of the industry: ❑ Incentives. Less than onequarter had received federal or state incentives in the form of tax breaks and job creation programs though not necessarily remanufacturing specific; research and development (R&D) collaboration is more likely between companies and academia than through government support; government R&D support would do much to promote innovation for

the industry. ❑ Core valuation. High core valuations are a significant drain on working capital and core shortages, and movement between countries are significant impediments to remanufacturing. ❑ Perception of remanufacturing: Some 91% of those surveyed said enhancing the perception of remanufacturing would benefit their company; government purchasing of remanufactured goods remains a challenge both in the U.S. and globally; misunderstanding the difference between remanufacturing and repair is a problem, with Mexico, Germany, and Japan having particular perception problems. ❑ Industry standards. Absence of industry standards affects everything from trade to domestic operations, with three-quarters saying no industry standards in their sector and nearly as many saying standards would help their business. “The economic, environmental, and employment benefits offered by remanufacturing can be significantly increased given a wider and more thorough understanding of the industry,” notes McKenna. If that occurs, it could help save truckers a lot of money as well. AT
