Finding drivers

S

Solving the growing shortage of truck drivers these days has become a complicated and serious problem for the U.S. One study reports that we could experience a shortage of some 200,000 drivers by 2022. Low pay is part of the problem, as evidenced by 2011 Dept. of Labor figures that noted the average startpay for a TL driver is just a shade over A confluence of ing $39,000. This is certainly not the kind of issues contribute income that can stand alone to support a family of four these days. to the shortage During a conference call organized by Wall Street investment firm Stifel Nicolaus back in March, Gordon Klemp, president and founder of the National Transportation Institute, touched on some other issues fueling the shortage. These include generous unemployment benefits (99 weeks), currently available to Americans, combined with a burgeoning “underground economy” that provides tax-free income resulting from part-time work mowing lawns, plowing snow, etc.; stricter driver hiring criteria (relating to health, safety record, substance abuse history, etc.); intrusion of technology into the cab, which has the net effect of pushing away drivers who are uncomfortable with the “big brother” effect; and expansion of private fleets, which offer more regular routes, more home time, and greater annual compensation. In short, finding and keeping drivers is becoming a more difficult issue for trucking firms to deal with. AT

Reverse thinking F

or the majority of small carriers, the best paying and most consistent freight comes from within a 100-mi. radius of a truck driver’s home. This means that if the carrier’s driver is home for a few days, dispatch pushes him to get back on the road because its most important customers need their freight covered. Yet after delivering his last load, this same trucker could spend days at a truck stop waiting for a backhaul. What’s not working? Why should the trucker be stalled at a truck stop waiting for a return load? And when the trucker is trying to get some quality personal time at home, he gets inundated with calls from dispatch trying to get him to take the next outbound load. The solution? Hire truckers from the area where your best customers’ freight is located. So while you’re searching for the best-paying return load, you’ve got a happy trucker, enjoying some welldeserved home time. The result is an increased number of good paying loads hauled, improving your trucking company’s overall revenue and profit as well as quality home time for your truckers. Lightweight bracket

F

ontaine Fifth Wheel has introduced a new lightweight slide bracket assembly it said reduces weight without sacrificing strength. The LWB replaces Fontaine’s ATB slide. It accepts a variety of Fontaine No-Slack top plates, including Model 6000 stamped steel, Model 7000 cast steel, and Model 7000CC cast steel, low-lube. Mounting heights start at an industry low of 63/4 in. and go up to 101/4 in. According to Fontaine, the LWB Quad-Lock four-point locking system increases the locking surface area to provide greater stability and improved wear characteristics. The 2-in. increment positioning capability provides greater versatility for improved payload distribution. A greaseless bracket liner offers consistent lubrication, reduces wear, and diminishes maintenance costs. The LWB is rated up to 55,000 lbs. vertical load and 150,000 lbs.

The assembly is rated at 55,000 lbs. vertical load. drawbar pull rating. “We’ve designed the LWB to be lighter than its predecessor without sacrificing capacity or strength,” said Aaron Puckett, Fontaine Fifth Wheel director of fleet sales. “Our R&D team used computer-aided design to develop the bracket’s smaller footprint, which uses steel reinforcement in key areas to provide greater durability and strength. As a result, the LWB is more robust than the ATB slide.” www.fifthwheel.com

Composite skirt A

erodynamic device maker Freight Wing has introduced the AeroFlex Composite trailer side skirt, which it said can help improve fuel economy by up to 7.45%. Made of a pliable composite material and braced with flexible mounting rods, the side skirt weighs 170 lbs. “It’s a great new addition to our line of aerodynamic trailer fairings,” said Sean Graham, Freight Wing’s president. “It joins our family of side skirts, which includes the AeroFlex DMP (formerly called the AeroFlex 2012), constructed of heavy-duty dense matrix polyethylene (DMP). Our new composite model is of the same geometry as the DMP and gets the same fuel economy benefits as our original model. They’re just constructed differently.” While the DMP model can take the most abuse, thanks to the “bounce back” nature of its plastic construc-

Assuming risk

T

There is no doubt that the tires on the steering axle get the most attention from drivers and maintenance personnel. In many cases, when a tire fails on a drive or trailer position, the driver can still maintain control of the vehicle. But the unpredictability of a steer tire failure dictates a higher degree of caution, so decisions regarding tires on the front are typically made Repairing steer axle from a more conservastandpoint. tires remains an tiveThe most widely debated issue is defiindividual choice nitely centered on the subject of repairing steer tires. In the 1990s, the industry sought regulatory guidance from the Dept. of Transportation when it needed answers to some questions: Is a nail hole repair (stem or plug) of the tread area of a steering axle tire considered a “boot, blowout patch or other ply repair,” and is it prohibited by Section 10(a)(10) of Appendix G to Subchapter B? At the time, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration was not in existence, so the Office of Motor Carrier Research and Standards within the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) provided the answer: No. A nail hole repaired by using self-curing compounds or procured rubber inserts or stems, with a repair unit on the inside of the tire, is not prohibited by Section 10(a)(10) of Appendix G. Since I am not aware of any expiration on regulatory guidance, I believe that it is still safe to assume that a nail hole repair in the tread area of a steer axle tire is legal. In fact, since the quality of nail hole repair materials has significantly increased since the 1990s, the practice has never been safer.

That being said, there are still fleets and commercial tire dealers that do not repair steer tires. They feel it is not worth the risk, so they make the choice to limit repairs to drive and trailer positions. The important thing to remember is that it is exactly that, a choice. It’s not illegal or inconsistent with industry recommended practices. Neither the Tire Industry Assn. nor the Rubber Manufacturers Assn. even mention wheel position in their tire repair information. Industry guidelines are very specific when it comes to the size and location of the injury, but the limitations for steer, drive and trailer tires are identical. So, why do companies refuse to repair tires on the front axle? In my opinion, they are just being conservative. Since the repaired tire can be run out on the trailer in most instances, the casing can still be saved most of the time. And while people may accuse a tire dealer of just wanting to sell a new tire, the liability associated with a repair failure on a steer tire could be catastrophic if it led to a serious or fatal accident. Some companies have made a conscious decision to eliminate any risk, so it’s unfair to criticize them for erring on the side of caution. On the other hand, there are applications where the repair of a steer tire makes perfect sense. Large flotation tires cannot be run out on the trailer, so the cost of replacement may be difficult to justify when a simple puncture occurs in the tread. Unfortunately, this means that fleets in these situations could be forced to repair the tires themselves if dealers are unwilling to accept the liability. Someone has to assume the risk, so a fleet that insists on repairing steer tires may not have a choice. AT

Right on specs Buying equipment spec’d correctly saves fleet money

T

The surest route to being competitive is to find ways to reduce costs, notes Duane Gilbert, COO at Gibco Construction. “We never shortchange ourselves when investing in new trucks and new equipment,” he says. “We don’t shop by price because we’ve found the best quality products aren’t the least expensive initially; however, they are the most cost-effective in the long run.” That approach is paying off at Gibco. The Cleveland, TN-based company specializes in site preparation for construction projects, excavating work, and building and maintaining highways in a quad-state area of Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Currently, the company has a three-year backlog of projects, including work on an expansion at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport and at a new manufacturing facility for the solar panel industry. Gibco’s philosophy is to spec its 100-vehicle fleet with components that offer long-term value and address the challenges of rising fuel costs and driver retention. In the fleet are Cummins-powered Kenworth T800 tri-axle trucks with dump bod-

14 American Trucker/April 2013

ies from Truck Bodies & Equipment International. In particular, Gilbert cites the choice of Eaton’s fully automated UltraShift Plus Vocational Construction Series transmissions. “We served as a test fleet prior to the introduction of UltraShift Plus in 2009,” he relates. “Now the 8-speed model is a standard specification. So far we’ve put them on 22 new trucks.”

UNEXPECTED BENEFITS

“We weren’t expecting automated transmissions to have a big impact in a construction operation,” Gilbert continues. “We don’t drive up and down the Interstate all day. Our trucks run fully loaded in onand off-highway environments, usually over shorter distances.” Gilbert says the company has seen “a drastic improvement in fuel economy.” From an average of 5 mpg, trucks with the automated transmissions are getting anywhere from 1.5 to 2 mpg better fuel consumption. “If you do the math, it really adds up,” he says. “Even a 1-mpg increase over a 450-mi. day saves 15 gals. At today’s fuel prices, that’s at least $50

Go to

per truck per day or a minimum of $5,000 a day for a 100-truck fleet.” Gilbert believes that the fuel savings are a direct result of computercontrolled shifting patterns. “Drivers are human,” he says. “They have good and bad days, while the UltraShift Plus makes the same optimum gear changes every single time. “Driver concerns about moving away from traditional manual transmissions have been all but erased as well,” Gilbert adds. “They were worried about downshifting but that hasn’t been an issue. They are also less fatigued at the end of the day, and I believe that makes for safer driving.” Another equipment area at Gibco where effective choices are paying off is with tires. “We used to buy different makes of tires depending on the price,” Gilbert explains. “We’ve now switched to buying only Michelin tires that are designed with a construction-specific compound. Before, we were getting about 20,000 mi. out of a tire. Now it’s closer to 80,000 mi. The tires are a little more expensive upfront, but at four times the service life they cost much less in the long haul. “When you stop and look at overall cost,” Gilbert says, “there’s a payback every day. Along with keeping our customers coming back to us for job after job by giving them exactly what they are paying us to do, our goal is to be competitive.”

Natural gas primer MANAGER: Jerrold Hutton TITLE: Director-gaseous fuels transportation partnership FLEET: Clean Fuels Ohio, Columbus, OH OPERATION: Statewide nonprofit dedicated to promoting the use of alternative fuels

A

s more fleets contemplate using natural gas to fuel their vehicles, questions also arise as to how such a switch might impact maintenance practices. For example, JX Enterprises, a chain of 15 medium- and heavy-duty truck dealerships headquartered in Waukesha, WI, spent north of $30,000 to make several of its truck service bays ready for natural gas. When it built its 28,000-sq.-ft. JX Truck Center facility in Kronenwetter, WI, last year, the company beefed up a “firewall” between its maintenance and body shop bays, as well as an in-floor heating system powered by waste

PROBLEM

H

oil to remove open flame issues. “We’d just finalized the plans when we started talking about the growing demand for LNG (liquid natural gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas). That’s when we revisited the plans with our contractor to see what we needed to do in order to work on such equipment,” says Sam Stevenson, general manager of the facility. Thus, one of the challenges fleets face when exploring a changeover to natural gas power is finding information concerning what shop upgrades need to be done in order to comply with fire and safety regulations where this gaseous substance is concerned.

elping fleets deal with the challenges of making the switch to natural gas is a key service of organizations such as Clean Fuels Ohio, explains Jerrold Hutton, the group’s director of its gaseous fuel transportation partnership. The company offers guidance on how to update maintenance facilities and practices to safely work on natural gas-powered equipment. “For example, if you’re going to put a [natural gas vehicle] in the shop for a while, you’ll need to ‘de-fuel’ the unit,” he says. “But you can’t just release the fuel into the air. You need to offload it by attaching it to a compressor station to remove the fuel from the vehicle and put it back into storage.” It’s also important to note that odorants are added to both LNG and CNG so drivers and shop technicians can identify if a leak has occurred; however, both act slightly differently when expelled into the atmosphere. “Natural gas is lighter than air and has a limited range for combustion; between a 5% and 15% concentration in the air is when it can ignite,” Hutton explains. “Yet LNG is stored at -240 deg. F so it liquefies; once it reaches

-30 deg F, it then reverts to a gas and behaves like CNG.” Fleets also need to pay close attention to National Fire Protection Assn. (NFPA) codes regarding facility safety in relation to gaseous substances—in particular sections 52, 58 (for propane), 59 A (for LNG), 30 and 30 A (for flammability and combustibility rules), 70 (for national electrical codes), and 88 A (for structural rules). Hutton explains, though, that the NFPA codes serve only as “guidelines”; local authorities retain the final word on shop compliance. “The main issue they focus on is the potential accumulation of flammable gases, so they will evaluate ventilation needs, i.e., how much air needs to be moved per square foot per hour, etc.,” he said. Overhead heating systems, for example, are often a no-no in shops working on natural gas vehicles as are infrared heaters. The scope of paint booth activity is limited by the proximity of natural gas equipment. Hutton says the best advice his group offers to fleets is to isolate a single bay within the maintenance facility so it can be dedicated to handling natural gas-powered equipment.

ll trucks and trailers have maintenance requirements that can’t be neglected. If they are, there’s a significant price to pay for that neglect. The truck’s owner is ultimately responsible for overseeing that necessary maintenance is completed. There are financial consequences to be paid if this is ignored. Murphy’s Law would suggest that if a truck is going to break down, it will take place in the most inconvenient location and at an inopportune time financially. Add to this the consequences of violating CSA rules and it’s easy to see how important it is to properly maintain a truck and/ or trailer. Number one on the list of things to do is the careful selection of who performs your preventive maintenance (PM). While many smaller carriers depend on a diesel mechanic shop or OEM dealer to handle maintenance and repairs, there are micro-carrier owners who will, for the sake of saving a few dollars, do their own maintenance. And while this does have some advantages, it

I’m not suggesting you stop doing your own maintenance, as it has much value for you, the owner, if done correctly. But it is recommended you develop a relationship with a diesel repair shop or OEM that can act as your second set of eyes. Have them do your quarterly inspections and from time to time, have them do a complete PM in which the mechanic changes the oil, lubes the truck, and inspects and adjusts the brakes, tires and electrical system. By carefully choosing the right technician for preventive maintenance and inspections, you will eliminate hours of aggravation resulting from expensive roadside downtime. How should you go about finding and selecting the best mechanic for your operation? Your first concern should be quality of service—not price. Locate a diesel mechanic with ASE (Automotive Services Excellence) certification, one who has a thorough knowledge of your par-

ticular truck and engine model. This individual should know every repair that’s ever occurred on your truck. You should be able to consult the mechanic from the road for his advice and the best course of action to take. Can the repair wait? Can the truck be driven back to the repair shop? Does the truck need to be inspected and repaired immediately, out on the road? This technician should be located within a few miles of your main location, making it convenient to fol-

low the preventive maintenance schedule and all inspections and repairs. All of this necessary downtime is easily coordinated with home time or when your driver is coming through. But again, the quality of the work performed must take order of importance over location and price. As you search for your mechanical expert, keep these guidelines in mind: q Is the shop updating skills on a regular basis through OEM ser-

vice and maintenance updates and memorandum? q Does the shop have a continuing education schedule with all the different OEMs represented? q Is there a certification or testing program in place to verify a technician’s skill level? q Does the shop maintain or have immediate access to parts for your particular truck make and model? q Does the shop have the correct OEM-required tools for repairs? q Are you able to communicate with the shop? q Does the shop work with you and your schedule to keep interruptions to you and your customers at a minimum? q Does the shop foreman look out for your best interests by looking for the lowest possible cost with the best results? Te second important consideration is having the correct inspection program in place so items needing repair are discovered and repaired before they become more costly. Tis requires coordination between the driver of the truck, the technician and the truck’s owner. All three need to be in the loop at all times. Of the three, the most important is the driver (or drivers) operating the truck on a daily basis. Each driver in your fleet must be continuously vigilant: looking, listening and listing everything observed concerning the mechanical condition of the truck and trailer. Any strange sound should be listed on the daily inspection notebook. Any unusual aberration in the handling behavior of the truck should be noted, including odd odors, emissions or fluid leaks.

AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings

Tis continuous inspection needs to occur every moment of the day, from the pretrip inspection to the post-trip inspection. It needs to include a walkaround every time the driver gets out of the truck, as well as an inspection while fueling. Drivers need to check running lights, brakes, tires, wheels, airlines, electrical lines, drips and look for liquids in places where they shouldn’t be. All driver observations must be noted and communicated to both the mechanic and vehicle owner. The driver becomes the technician’s eyes and ears and thus can nip in the bud any mechanical problems before they become unscheduled downtime on the road. Tere are financial benefits from effective inspection and preventive maintenance as well: q Reduces unscheduled downtime. q Allows flexibility in scheduling the truck for service, thereby increasing revenue and cash flow by eliminating lost or delayed loads. q Helps maintain value in the truck at trade-in or resale. q Improves your carrier’s CSA BASICs score with zero violation roadside inspections. Don’t let unscheduled downtime caused by an avoidable repair ruin a shipper’s day—and your contract with them. Take control of your equipment maintenance and repair and you’ll reduce costs and increase your revenue. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@ writeuptheroad.com or call 731749-8567. spotlight on an Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? If you stock parts, which ones?

BY TIMOTHY BRADY

In many small towns across America, the spirit of being an entrepreneur gets passed down from generation to generation. In the case of WheelWheels, that spirit is evident even in its name: That’s what the Petty brothers, Raymond, Tim and Kenneth, yelled as little boys when they spotted one of the 18-wheelers their truck mechanic grandfather worked on. Those boys grew up to run Wheel-Wheels Trucking, a small trucking company.

What is the primary focus of your business? Our focus is to make a living and be independent.

Tires, brakes, lights, seals, oil and lubricants are kept on hand, with other parts purchased on an asneeded basis.

Wheel-Wheels Trucking Owner: Raymond Petty In business: 23 years Location: Kenton, TN Wheel-Wheels Trucking is a family-owned company specializing in dry van freight running regular and ondemand routes.

How is maintenance handled? We do 80% of our maintenance ourselves and 20% of it is jobbed out. All of our major repairs are jobbed out.

What are three challenges you face with your maintenance program? How do you resolve each of these? Three challenges we face are cost, yard checks and driver checks. We resolve these by budgeting; we go behind the drivers in the yard to double-check, and we hold regular drivers’ meetings pressing the issue of checking the trucks.

How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? We do 30,000-mi. checks on trailers or preventive maintenance every three months. We also do oil changes once a month on average, plus regular checks in the yard when they come in. We service each truck every 12,000 to 15,000 mi.

28 American Trucker/April 2013

Go to

When does the company determine it’s time to replace a truck or trailer? When the cost of the repair is more than the truck is worth, then we replace it.

What are your specifications for your trucks? Older, pre-emissions trucks.

Are you able to find these on the used market? Or do you purchase used and customize them to your specs? Yes—sometimes. Wheel-Wheels has specific trucks that meet strict California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards, and we lease CARB-complaint trailers with all the SmartWay technology. These make all of our runs to the West Coast.

How do you ensure good mileage from tires? We watch the air pressure and shocks closely and keep trailer loads light.

What programs do you have in place to ensure compliance for your trucks and or trailers? We have regular drivers’ meetings, and we’ll put trucks out of service, even over small things. We’ll also fix the problem immediately. Batteries

Commercial vehicle battery needs continue to evolve, notes Todd Biggs, director of aftermarket parts and service marketing for Daimler Trucks North America, supplier of the Alliance Truck Parts line of batteries. “In today’s trucks, batteries are obviously still used for cold cranking power,” he says. “However, deeper discharge capabilities and cycling characteristics are also needed to operate a growing array of onboard auxiliary equipment.” The expanding number of electronic accessories and systems on vehicles can have a big impact on batteries, relates Maria OrlandoKrick, marketing manager of Specialty Markets at EnerSys, maker of Odyssey batteries. “The small currents that truck batteries have to deliver continuously have a large effect,” she says. “The cumulative amp-hours extracted from a battery can be significant,” Orlando-Krick explains further. “For example, if the engine is inactive for a long enough time, parasitic loads will drain the battery to discharge. At that point they are unable to maintain a voltage that is high enough for proper operation of electronic equipment, and the battery will not be able to provide enough power to turn over the engine.” Another demand on today’s technology is the growing number of idling restrictions across the country that further increase power demands on truck accessories. These needs have led truck battery manufacturers to develop absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries that offer both cranking power and deep cycle reserve power. AGM technology was used originally in military aircraft because of its reliability and resistance to vibration. Manufacturers point out those attributes, and the ability to provide power even at very low temperatures, make the technology a perfect fit for commercial vehicles. In commercial truck operation, according to Johnson Controls, AGM batteries can incorporate features to extend battery life in tough applications, such as reducing corrosion. In addition, there are no restrictions on mounting the batteries, giving vehicle OEMs added design flexibility.

Interstate Batteries also focuses on offering deep cycling, faster recharging and stronger starting products. The company is rolling out its new 810 CCA 31AGM7 battery for trucks. Featuring Interstate’s Pure Matrix Power solution, the battery utilizes a combination of pure non-alloy lead and an extra-thin plate design. Johnson Controls, which just debuted a new Eveready-branded truck battery, says its Group 31 dualpurpose AGM provides both starting and deep cycle performance for commercial trucks. The battery is rated at 825 CCA. Exide’s latest offering is the RoadForce AGM 200 battery for trucks, which is available in either 925 or 700 CCA ratings. In addition, the manufacturer says the RoadForce has two times better cycling and 40% greater charge acceptance compared to conventional battery designs. EnerSys has rebranded its line as the Odyssey Extreme Series to differentiate between existing products and new batteries that offer cranking and deep cycle reserve power. For fleets, the 31-PC2150 model is available with a 1,150 CCA rating.
