HOS battle down to the wire

I

n arguments made before a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in March, the American Trucking Assns. (ATA) characterized the changes the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) made to driver hours-of-service (HOS) rules in 2011 as ÒdrivenÓ by an agenda. ÒThe existing rules have a proven track record, and the agencyÕs purported reasons for tinkering with them were baseless,Ó said ATA general counsel Prasad Sharma. ÒWeÕre hopeful the judges will see through the agencyÕs mere pleas for deference and after-the-fact explanations for a rule that was agenda-driven rather than evidence-based.Ó According to ATA, FMCSAÕs 2011 HOS changes would put Òonerous restrictionsÓ on the ability of drivers to effectively manage their schedules by limiting the use of a restart period to once every seven days as well as Òinflexibly mandatingÓ off-duty breaks during the workday. The trucking lobby contended that these changes were not supported by data and thus should be rejected. ATA pointed out in a news re-

lease that, separately, a coalition of Òoutside [safety] advocacy groupsÓ challenged FMCSAÕs retention of the 11th hour of driving and the existence of the restart at all. ÒPublic Citizen and its cohorts also faced tough questions they didnÕt have good answers for,Ó Sharma said. ÒDespite Public CitizenÕs arguments, neither the law nor the data support Public C i t i z e nÕs contention that FMCSA was obliged to make the hours-of-service regulations more one rous than they are. Nothing they said [before the court panel] changed that.Ó The trucking lobby stated that the heart of its HOS challenge rests in the agencyÕs limitations on the restart (limiting it to once per week and requiring that it span two consecutive 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. periods); the requirement that the mandatory 30-minute break within eight hours of starting a duty period be completely off-duty (rather than just a break from driving); and the unannounced application of the break requirement to local delivery drivers. ATA holds that the challenged rules are arbitrary and capricious, which it said is the relevant legal standard.

Conquering competition I

n the world of trucking, we’ve all experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat at one time or another—usually on a daily basis. Competition for freight drives the business. And competition for freight, lanes and truckers is all part of the trucking game. But the way we handle this rivalry/competition between carriers is what can make or break a trucking company. Much like seeing an accident on the highway involving two big rigs, how we respond and what our focus becomes determines our success. If we rubberneck and focus on the accident (our competition), chances are we’ll have a mishap of our own. Or we can slow down, focus on the road and the task in front of us, and be on our way. Another alternative would be to pull over and render aid. In either case, we’ve continued on our intended path.

10-speed model E aton has announced the launch of its Fuller Advantage Series of heavy-duty 10-speed transmissions. A manual model will enter production in September, and an automated version featuring Eaton’s UltraShift Plus technology will become available in the first quarter of next year. According to Eaton, the Advantage transmissions will boast “a wealth of new design features” that will reduce component weight and increase efficiency to provide an improvement in vehicle fuel efficiency and lower preventive-maintenance costs. Jeff Walker, global product director-manual transmissions, said a new “precision lube system” for the transmissions reduces the “oil churn energy losses” found in traditional transmissions by nearly 33%. He explained that with less heat being generated, the Advantage transmissions do not require an oil cooler and correspond-

GM launches fleet program A new dealer program for Chevrolet and GMC commercial vehicle customers is being offered by General Motors. The Business Elite program, which is available at 469 dealerships nationwide, targets business customers who own one to 100 vehicles. According to GM, the program is designed to provide small and midsized businesses with “the industry’s best sales and service experience” throughout the vehicle’s life cycle. “We asked our customers what they want and need from their commercial vehicle provider, and we redesigned

Skirt made from recycled material A trailer skirt made from recycled materials and built exclusively by military veterans has received certification from the EPA SmartWay program as a product that shows a verifiable improvement in fuel efficiency. Transit gets options F ord Motor is rolling out two new variations of its Transit light vehicle: a chassis cab and a cutaway model. Len Deluca, director of the Ford Commercial Vehicles division, said that the Transit chassis cab features an enclosed passenger compartment and bare frame ready to accept aftermarket body modules ranging from custom cargo delivery to utility body. By contrast, he noted that while the Transit cutaway is similar to the chassis cab, the rear of the passenger compartment is open so it can be paired with specialty body modules such as shuttle or school bus bodies. The chassis cab and cutaway will

Hybrid upgrade package A

t the 2013 Work Truck Show, Echo Automotive showed off a full-size “chassis display” to help provide potential fleet customers a way to examine its EchoDrive technology package up close. The EchoDrive driveline system, which is added to a vehicle’s powertrain, uses regenerative braking to power batteries that assist the vehicle’s engine during operation. The “donor vehicle” for the display was a 2007 Ford E-250 van with almost 400,000 mi. This showed how easily the system can be fitted onto vehicles of any age, allowing companies to extend the useful life of a vehicle, Echo said. www.echoautomotive.com

Finding answers

I

I recently had the pleasure of addressing a group of risk management people in the trucking industry and during the discussion on tire inflation, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements generated some serious questions. To begin with, there was some concern about the fact that OSHA defines service as the demounting, mountinflating, deflatIs there a simple ing, ing, installing, removand handling of way to meet OSHA ing tires used on large like trucks, requirements? vehicles tractors and buses. Since OSHA requires training for every employee who services these tires, drivers who are responsible for inflating their vehicleÕs tires must be trained to recognize the hazards. Specifically, we were talking about circumferential zipper ruptures on steel cord radial truck tires that are the result of prolonged and/or overloading. Drivers who are unaware of the signs of a zipper rupture could be at serious risk of an injury should one occur during the inflation process, especially when the tire is still installed on the vehicle. They need to know that if the inflation pressure is less than 80% of the recommended pressure, the tire must be removed from the axle, demounted from the rim, inspected for signs of run flat damage, and then inflated in a restraining device (safety cage). But that turns out to be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to assessing the risk for drivers. OSHA also has specific requirements for truck tire inflation devices that must be in place at all times. Unfortunately, fuel islands at truck stops do not always have the necessary components in place, so drivers are basically committing OSHA violations every time they inflate their tires with

non-compliant equipment. It seems like the most common problem is the lack of a clip-on air chuck. By using this device, a driver does not have to physically hold the hose onto the valve stem and stand directly in the trajectory of the sidewall during the inflation process. I want to make it clear that I am not trying to indict the truck stops that provide free tire inflation hoses for drivers. Clip-on air chucks wear out and must be replaced on a regular basis at high volume locations like fuel islands. In order to continue this service to the industry at no charge, a hand-held air chuck that does not wear out is the most economical solution. And IÕve also heard that many of these same truck stops have issues with theft when OSHA-compliant clip-on air chucks with in-line valves and pressure gauges are installed. For the truck stop, the solution is simple. All it has to do is remove the free inflation hoses from the fuel islands and direct everyone to the on-site repair or maintenance shop for tire inflation. Since the popularity of this decision wonÕt be difficult to gauge or estimate, itÕs important to recognize that there is a delicate balance between meeting the needs of customers and creating hazards that nobody wants. And while itÕs easy for me to point out the problem, I also have a responsibility to play a role in creating a solution. My motive is always to put the safety of the driver or technician first, so I decided it was time to move the rock that has covered this problem for years. Now, the next step is for the industry to create a training program that will educate drivers on the hazards related to inflating truck tires. This way, they at least know what to look for and how to protect themselves. AT

Basic training Focus on founding principles has allowed for growth

In 1989, history was made when J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. (J.B. Hunt) entered into an exclusive partnership with what is now BNSF Railway Co. To start, the company fielded just a few hundred containers. Today, the Lowell, AR-based transportation logistics services provider operates nearly 60,000 company-owned 53-ft. containers and one of the largest drayage fleets in the world. Regardless of the size of its intermodal operation, though, the basics are the same. To maximize carrying capacity, J.B. Hunt fields lightweight day cab tractors, high-cube containers, and lightweight chassis. The fleet’s suppliers are asked to provide the most interior space possible in the lightest container on the market. In addition, to enable the company to maximize cargo-carrying capacity, chassis also have to be the lightest possible. Intermodal equipment at J.B. Hunt doesn’t have special maintenance requirements, but it does undergo extensive inspections due

to the securement devices used on the chassis and rail cars. A major difference between intermodal equipment and a traditional overthe-road trailer is the securement of the container to the chassis. This is reflected in steps drivers must follow during pretrip inspections to make sure the container is properly secured. Additionally, the fleet always maintains its equipment to meet the requirements of any federal rules, and to maintain the lowest possible operating expense.

ADDED CONCERNS

Intermodal drivers also generally spend more time in high-density traffic compared to those in J.B. Hunt’s traditional truckload operation. Still, while dispatching and asset management of intermodal equipment is the same for a container as it is for a trailer, there is the added need to manage the chassis. J.B. Hunt offers domestic intermodal service, including hauling truckload freight in containers and trailers, on select routes of Class I

railroads. Its nationwide network of rail partners is anchored by BNSF in the West and by Norfolk Southern in the East. this mean? Without the freighthauling capacity of a trailer attached to a tractor, it’s nearly impossible to generate revenue. These large carriers own far more trailers than power units so they can maximize their tractors and drivers by having trailers preloaded. This allows drivers to do nothing more than drop and hook. This means the driver can pull a trailer to its destination, drop the trailer in the receiver’s yard, bobtail a short distance to pick up another trailer, and then head

back under load. This allows for a constant source of revenue.

QUIET TIME But the trucker with one trailer per tractor may wait for hours at a receiver to unload his trailer, drive the same short distance to a shipper, and wait several hours again to load his trailer. In the meantime, the multiple-trailer carrier’s driver, doing just a drop and hook, is several hundred miles closer to his next destination. In a month’s time, the drop-andhook trucker has generated a substantially greater amount of revenue than the single-trailer driver. This can equal thousands of dollars more in a single month. The actual amount is dependent upon the distance and line haul generated by each load, but it could be as many as two, three or more loads per month. A carrier with an average line haul of $3,000 per load could generate $6,000-$9,000 more per month in gross revenue per tractor-trailer. This is based on having consistent freight from customers with regularly scheduled and multiple loads. Let’s look at how a small or microcarrier can take advantage of the revenue generation that owning more trailers than tractors can create. Most smaller carriers have their best paying and most consistent freight as outbound loads. For example, if you have six tractors, you would own 12 trailers and one local yard mule tractor to move trailers where they can be loaded. Instead of having your truckers wait while their trailer is unloaded and reloaded, you’d have their outbound freight already loaded into a trailer. All the driver would do is either deliver the inbound load or drop his trailer at the local receiver, then hook to the loaded outbound trailer and be on his way. That trucker would

then keep that trailer, unloading and loading it with freight until he returns to where your outbound freight and loaded trailers are located. Then he or she does it all over again. It’s also possible to do the reverse for your inbound freight if you have a destination to which you’re constantly delivering your outbound loads. Have a ‘round robin’ of trailer swaps occurring on both ends of a lane to tremendously increase the number of loads hauled. There are many benefits to this multiple trailer idea. And the need to keep on top of maintenance and trailer repairs so your carrier stays CSA-compliant is more easily handled. You would have enough spare time with the extra trailers to do a detailed inspection, maintenance and repair program. There wouldn’t be any out-of-service or fix-it ticket violations that would lower your BASIC score. Another benefit of owning multiple trailers is that their useful life far exceeds that of most tractors. You can utilize a well-maintained trailer

for 15 years (or in some cases 20), which means the return on investment can be substantial. And don’t overlook the depreciation on those trailers. During slow periods, those same trailers can continue to produce revenue by becoming portable warehouses for local businesses. With the high cost of renting warehouse space throughout much of the country, many times a semi-trailer fits the bill for a business with a temporary need of storage. Even flatbeds have been rented out as temporary stages for fairs and festivals, or as floats for parades.

PHANTOM DRIVERS Finally, with the capacity crunch caused by the increasing volume of freight and the ever-present challenge of finding qualified truck drivers, adding to your hauling capacity with trailers would be like adding one more driver to your fleet of six without the need of bringing another trucker on board. Not to mention that for the cost of one tractor, you can purchase two or three trailers. All in all, investing in additional trailers so you’re at a 2 to 1 ratio of trailers to power units is a revenuegenerating machine when managed efficiently. The rewards include greater profit for your trucking company and better earning potential for your truckers as they invest their time doing what they do best—pulling paying freight instead of waiting for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded. hen you’ve got 17,000 assets to manage—encompassing tractors, trucks, trailers, forklifts, even converter freight dollies—via 36 shops scattered across the U.S., keeping tabs on everything from a maintenance perspective PROBLEM can become something of a headache. And not a mild one either. Take inspection reports, for example. If Dept. of Transportation (DOT) inspectors come calling at a particular shop, rummaging through file cabinets packed with paper to locate specific reports is going to turn into a time-consuming, laborious, and ag-

gravating process at best. “Our inspection forms used to be stored in a trailer in Atlanta; if a report was needed, someone had to physically search for it,” notes Charles Rozelle, regional maintenance manager at Saia’s shop in Dallas. And that’s before any errors come to light, errors that are an expected by-product when inspection report data is entered by hand. Because of this, Saia sought a system that would not only capture critical inspection and maintenance data electronically, but also share it both internally and externally when needed.

aia decided to deploy quick response (QR) codes to help gain such capabilities. Codes are placed on stickers attached to its tractors, trucks, and other equipment to allow access via a tablet or smartphone to important vehicle details such as model number and mileage more quickly and accurately. The carrier says that its QR codes will be integrated with its Automated Service Initiation System (ASIST) maintenance platform developed by Decisiv for Mack and Volvo Trucks. “Our technicians are now using iPad tablet computers to scan QR codes on vehicles and access and conduct preloaded inspections,” notes Charles Rozelle. “The QR codes take away the possibility of data entry errors. By automatically transferring inspection results via a WiFi network to the shop, we can instantly see if service or repairs are needed. The platform also gives us easy access to inspection histories for DOT and internal use.” Both Volvo and Mack Trucks are adding QR codes to all of their new vehicles to help speed service response times and improve customer vehicle uptime. When a truck arrives at a fleet’s maintenance shop or

a dealership, service advisers can easily scan the vehicle’s QR code to provide rapid access to the truck’s VIN, owner information and service history. Scanning the unique code launches a Decisiv mobile application and immediately loads asset information, customized inspection details, and pending work, Rozelle explains. The service adviser has the ability to launch required inspections through the mobile device used for the initial scan. The QR application allows technicians to add odometer readings to trigger and send pending preventive maintenance operations. This data can be sent simultaneously to shop personnel and the parts counter so they can be ready when the truck arrives at a service bay, notes Jason Plumlee, director of maintenance. Combined with the ASIST platform, the codes also replace inspection cards. “For example, we issued new cards in the Northeast after we added an inspection for water damage following last fall’s hurricane, and then issued cards again in that region once the inspections were done,” Plumlee points out. Deploying QR codes “system wide,” in his words, “offers a time- and cost-saving tool.”

t is not an exaggeration to say that trailer innovation appears to be in a golden age. New trailer models, new and redesigned components and systems, new materials, enhanced aerodynamics, and new technologies are rolling out at an amazing pace and the customer is the clear beneficiary.

A number of the new trailers making their debut this spring are for specialty applications. If you haul agricultural products, for instance, Trail King introduced a new continuous belt super hi-lite rolled side ag trailer (ASHR-C) in March for carriers that move feed, seed, fertilizer, and other ag-related products. It features a continuous 48-in., 2-ply SBR rubber belt driven by a dual- reduction planetary gearbox with heavy-duty roller chain and steel Z-Bar support. Trail King says the continuous belt design was engineered to deliver fast, horizontal discharge of the load and hopper clean-out in one revolution or less. It also reduces the risk of cross-contamination between loads. The trailer is available in capacities ranging from 55-105 cu. yds. and in overall lengths of 43-53 ft. Truckers moving natural gas also have a new line of trailers to consider. This April, Westmor Industries introduced its line of Proliner Transport Trailers specifically designed for the LNG industry. The cryogenic tank, with a volume of 12,860 gals., is designed to keep the fuel in its liquid form until the time of dispensing, thanks to a controlled temperature range of 100 deg. F to -360 deg. F. Rogers Brothers Corp. introduced a special 55-ton platform deck trailer designed for a Buffalo, NY, company that hauls construction equipment. According to Rog-

ers Brothers, the trailer can handle a load concentrated on any 13 ft. of the 25-ft. platform deck. The adjustable deck height is standard at 18 in. fully loaded. The trailer features Rogers’ “CobraNeck” detachable gooseneck design, which adjusts for various ground clearance positions and is adaptable to multiple fifth wheel heights. To meet the needs of carriers that must comply with 43-ft. kingpin laws, Talbert Manufacturing also rolled out a new model, the 5051 50-ton traveling axle trailer. It is especially suited to companies that do towing and recovery, move rental equipment or run small to midsized construction firms, Talbert says. The 5051 has a six-degree load angle and an overall length of 51 ft. It also features a 15,000-lb. planetary winch for faster loading speeds.

Great Dane Trailers featured four newly redesigned trailers at the recent Mid-America Trucking Show. Showcased innovations included Great Dane’s CorroGuard anti-corrosion coating, its newest EnduroGuard rear frame assembly, and patented ThermoGuard reefer lining package enhanced with a subpan to extend thermo protection throughout the trailer’s floor. Dynamics Consortium (CVDC) recently introduced its “Path Following Steering System,” designed to enable trailers to accurately follow the trajectory of the tractor thereby reducing tail-swing and cut-in. The system incorporates lightweight electrohydraulic actuators engineered to control the steering of each axle on the semi-trailer. A computer monitors data from sensors on the vehicle and controls the actuators to enable the trailer to more precisely follow the path of the fifth wheel. According to the company, on-highway, real-world testing is scheduled to begin by the middle of this year. “This makes these vehicles both safer and, operationally, much more efficient and effective,” notes David Cebon, professor of mechanical engineering at Cambridge University and director of CVDC. “Quite apart from the substantial safety benefits this system brings, it offers hugely increased maneuverability in confined spaces, allowing trailers to be accurately steered in both forward and reverse gears.” According to Cebon, the steering system also “significantly” increases tire life, thanks to reductions in the lateral forces on conventional trailers. With any luck, the U.S. market will also find this technology commercially available soon. Closer to home and more immediately available, Meritor Wabco unveiled a new version of its Roll Stability Support (RSS) system this spring designed to provide the benefits of both ABS and trailer-stability control in a single unit that also links with trailer components. Dubbed the RSS 1M, the new system is based on the earlier RSS 2M system widely deployed by tanker fleets. It features an auto-lift axle control and access to tire inflation data. The auto-lift system is designed to automatically raise and lower the lift

cover story axle based on the load of the trailer, allowing for improved fuel economy and reduced tire wear. The tire inflation data management system monitors tires and broadcasts an alert in the event of tire pressure loss. With the RSS 1M introduction, flatbed operations, refrigerated carriers and livestock haulers can now have access to these same auto-lift axle control and tire inflation data capabilities as well. Retrofit kits for the RSS 1M are also available to support air and spring suspension systems on fleets of any size. Hendrickson introduced a new zero-maintenance damping (ZMD) ride technology for trailers at the MidAmerica Trucking Show. The new air spring, available exclusively through Hendrickson on select Vantraax integrated air slider models, eliminates the need for shock absorbers entirely to reduce maintenance costs and improve ride. What’s more, this solution is designed to provide constant damping over the life of the spring, without the performance deterioration that is typical of shock absorbers. The new spring system also features chain down-stops to replace the rebound limiter function traditionally performed by the shock absorber. According to Hendrickson, these

heavy-duty down-stops provide maximum durability and also offer protection for trailers being loaded onto rail freight cars. Watson & Chalin also selected the Mid-America Trucking Show to debut a new line of trailer suspensions. They will be available in capacities of up to 25,000 lbs., with N or P spindles and with 12.25- to 18-in. drum or disc brakes. The suspensions will also be offered in various wall thicknesses, as well as with fully dressed wheel-end packages. The innovation wave has reached trailer lighting as well. Optronics International introduced new LED clearance/marker lamps at the MidAmerica Trucking Show. The UniLite LEDs with “GloLight” optics are

visually distinctive from other LED lamps because their lenses disperse light waves in a unique way that gives them a smooth, brightly glowing appearance, according to the company. “The GloLight optical technology is so different, it’s patentable,” noted Marcus Hester, director of sales and marketing for Optronics, at the product launch. “The new version of our Uni-Lite represents just one of 35 new GloLight products Optronics has in its pipeline.” The 12-volt Uni-Lite clearance/ marker lamps come in red and amber (single-function red MCL121RB, single-function amber MCL121AB, dual-function red MCL121R9B, and dual-function three-lamp cluster red MCL122RK3B). They are available in P2- and PC-rated versions, enabling them to meet the photometric requirements for a full range of applications. Lenses and housings are constructed of polycarbonate material to make them waterproof, and Optronics gives them a lifetime warranty.

The company says it is 20% stronger than the first-generation composite floor (rated up to 35,000 lbs.), yet it is still lighter and even more durable. Utility Trailer Manufacturing recently released a video about the company’s proprietary, foam-in-place insulation process for its 3000R reefer trailer. According to the company, the process fully insulates the entire trailer without foam voids, creating a 360deg. continuous high-pressure foam envelope that completely insulates the floor, walls and roof of the trailer. “We’ve developed this unique foam-in-place insulation process as a means to achieve the greatest thermal efficiency possible,” notes Larry Roland, director of marketing for Utility. “We are the only trailer manufacturer that utilizes this process.”

AERODYNAMICS For decades, most of the work undertaken to reduce aerodynamic drag was focused on tractors, not trailers, beginning with sloping hoods and smoothing airflow around the sides and over the top of the truck, then reducing turbulence between the tractor and trailer. Now the attention has shifted to improving the aerodynamics of trailers. This change in emphasis has been triggered in part by the need to reduce fuel costs and by California’s new requirement that 53-ft. or longer trailers be equipped with EPA SmartWay-verified aerodynamic devices. SmartTruck, for example, displayed a new low-profile version of its trailer side fairing system at the Mid-America Trucking Show. The company says its new side fairings, with a 1-in. profile versus the former 1.75-in. version, can provide a 0.5% improvement in fuel economy compared to its previous model. Pair it with SmartTruck’s Under Tray aerodynamic system and the fuel savings improvements can go

as high as 10.5%, it notes. Thanks to the narrower dimensions, the new SmartTruck side fairings can fit both dry van and reefer trailers and mesh with corrugated trailer panels. The new design also provides better swing clearance for trailer doors. In March, Utility Trailer introduced the Utility Side Skirt (USS) 120A-4, the company’s newest advanced aerodynamic side skirt design, which has been verified by EPA SmartWay to achieve a greater than

5% fuel savings. The USS-120A-4 features greater ground clearance to reduce impact damage and a galvanized, high-tensile steel bracing system engineered to allow the side skirt to flex inward and outward. If the skirting is bent, it can even be pounded back into shape. The new side skirt is available now as a factory- or dealer-installed option for new Utility trailers or as a retrofit for existing trailers through Utility’s Aftermarket Dept. The company offers a five-year warranty on this patented skirting design. During the 2013 Technology and Maintenance Council’s annual meeting this spring, DieselMeisers announced that its Kodiak AirPlow and Kodiak Bumper Bullet aerodynamic devices are now in full production. They complement the company’s existing Kodiak AeroCurtain trailer side skirt. The AirPlow installs on the underside of the trailer in front of the tandem axles to reduce the aerodynamic drag caused by the axles, while smoothing airflow and stabilizing the trailer in crosswinds, according to DieselMeisers. The Bumper Bullet mounts horizontally along the forward-facing side of the trailer’s rear under-ride bar to reduce the drag

AIRCRAFT INFLUENCE Both of the new devices borrow their shape from the leading edge of an aircraft wing. The company expects the new systems to deliver “significant fuel savings, improved road handling stability, and CARB/EPA SmartWay compliance.” Sustainable Aerodynamic Concepts announced this spring that its Aerosmart trailer skirt has received certification from the EPA SmartWay program. The skirt is made with materials reclaimed from donated, scrapped semi-trailers. According to the company, the result is a lightweight and durable aluminum skirt that is more affordable for customers, thanks to the use of reclaimed materials. Sustainable Aerodynamic Concepts is something of an innovation in and of itself. It is a nonprofit program created to help keep military veterans enrolled in school. The trailer skirt is manufactured entirely by military veterans participating in the transition program. BetterTrucker.com chose the MidAmerica Trucking Show to introduce its new Super-Skirt System this March. The relatively low-cost system (priced at under $1,000) features a modular design comprised of 2-ft.-long interlocking panels that can accommodate various trailer lengths. The Super-Skirt has no cross member braces either, replacing them with built-in stanchion support structures to secure every panel onto the trailer I-beams via galvanized bolts. Panels also feature a rigid dimensional shape designed to maintain directional control of the air flow to reduce surface drag and prevent wind from slipping under the trailer. Aft-facing safety reflectors are intended to provide additional visibility and safety for passing vehicles. In January, Freight Wing also de-

buted a new trailer side skirt, the AeroFlex Composite, which it notes has been SAE/TMC tested to improve fuel economy by up to 7.45%. The skirts are SmartWay-verified. The new model features the same geometry as the earlier AeroFlex DMP and delivers the same fuel savings; it is just constructed differently. According to the company, customers can expect an ROI in as little as 50,000 mi. of trailer utilization. ATDynamics, which first released its TrailerTail rear drag reduction system in 2008, also made an announcement this April. It will be launching the TrailerTail Eco50, a European version of the system. Distribution will begin in the United Kingdom.

So what can you expect to see next from trailer makers and their industry partners? The Dept. of Energy’s Super Truck project offers a glimpse forward. In fact, it might more properly be called the Super Truck and Trailer project because it is providing an arena for manufacturers to work together to create the most efficient tractor-trailer combination possible by looking at the truck and trailer as a single unit. Virtually nothing is left off the table, from aerodynamics to new materials and new technologies. This no-holdsbarred approach to innovation undertaken by cross-functional teams may produce the most innovative trailer ever. AT

Fuel consumption, emissions regulations and noise abatement issues associated with diesel truck engines are also concerns for operators and manufacturers of transport refrigeration units (TRU). “The unpredictable nature of fuel prices and new EPA Tier 4 emissions standards, which impact new refrigeration unit models beginning this year, continue to affect refrigerated transport operations,” says David Kiefer, director of marketing and product management at Carrier Transicold’s Truck, Trailer, Rail Div. “The response to this need for more sustainable solutions is found in new technologies.” Thermo King’s Doug Lenz, director of product management and marketing, notes that using intelligent solutions to reduce fuel consumption can help address the volatility of diesel prices. “Refrigerated fleet operators need to focus on finding new and innovative ways to reduce their fuel consumption and mitigate the impact of rising per-gallon prices,” he states. Lenz reports Thermo King is meeting these needs with its new T-80 Series truck temperature control platform, which incorporates an EPA/CARB-compliant engine and the QuickTemp Control system that reduces run time to save fuel. The company’s new Precedent trailer temperature control platform, also compliant with EPA Tier 4 regulations, includes the Precedent S-600, a greater-than-25-hp. single-temperature unit that has met the CARB ULETRU (ultra-low-emissions transport refrigeration unit) in-use performance standard, and the C-600, a less-than-25-hp. single-temperature unit with an allowed service life in California of seven years prior to modification. Carrier Transicold’s newest trailer refrigeration solutions include ecoForward technologies and comply with EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements for engines rated less than 25 hp. and with CARB standards for the first seven years of operation. “The APX control system in our new X4 Series trailer refrigeration platform has new powermanagement algorithms, intelligent refrigeration system controls, and the ability to communicate with the engine

and other distributed electronics,” David Kiefer says. Completely eliminating the use of fuel Thermo King’s Precedent to power refrigeration units is another way to meet emissions and noise regulations. All-electric refrigeration technology, an alternative championed by Great Dane subsidiary Johnson Refrigerated Truck Bodies, can be used effectively to address those challenges for some types of refrigerated fleets. Besides saving fuel, all-electric systems eliminate the need to turn off units to comply with noise abatement rules, the company points out. A growing number of refrigeration units now can use electric standby power to run when trailers are parked. Thermo King’s SmartPower solution and Carrier Transicold’s Flex Power option gives expanded stand-by capability to its hybrid diesel-electric Vector models. Refrigerated haulers also have to address their customers’ concerns regarding the Food Safety Modernization Act. Although rulemaking for the 2011 legislation is ongoing at FDA, it is almost certain that greater accountability will be required for maintaining food safety throughout the supply chain. Manufacturers are continuing to develop advanced control technologies and make data on system performance available.
