Good news

A

An uptick in truck sales, gross domestic product growth (GDP) and potential rate increases have given fleets plenty of reason for hope this year. John Larkin, managing director and head of transportation capital markets research for Wall Street firm Economy, truck Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., stressed in a recent report that the U.S. economic sales are research GDP growth should “accelerate slowly” at looking up 2% to 2.5%. With the increasing capacity crunch hitting trucking, this should help carriers win hard-to-get freight rate increases. Truck manufacturers and component suppliers at the Mid-America Truck Show back in March think sales for heavy- and medium-duty units should strengthen this year even if the “underlying economics” aren’t exactly red hot. “We’re expecting a big year for 2014 for the entire industry as the positive trends [that arose] in 2013 are continuing into this year,” noted Robert Woodall, director of sales & marketing for Peterbilt Motors. Woodall projected Class 8 sales of up to 240,000 units this year. The good news extends beyond Class 8, though. “The mediumduty side of the market is coming back at a much faster rate than the Class 8 side, and we expect to see 65,000 to 70,000 units in that segment this year,” said Bill Kozek, president of trucks and parts for Navistar. With renewed hopes for the year, carriers may finally have some leverage on their side. AT

Ford to offer tractor model

F

ord Motor has taken the wraps off its redesigned F-650 and F-750 mediumduty lineup, including a dedicated tractor model aimed at heavy-towing applications. The OEM said the trucks feature “a bold look inside and out, a powerful and efficient second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 diesel ... and a host of unique features not found on any other medium-duty truck.” Along with the tractor version, straight-frame and dock-height models will be offered as well as regular, supercab and crew cabs. Designated as 2016 models, the Class 6-7 F-650 and F-750 trucks will be available in the spring of 2015. “Every day, we’re thinking of new ways to better serve our hard-working customers,” said John Ruppert, general manager, Ford commercial vehicle sales & marketing. “The same Ford engineers who developed the best-selling F-Series [pickups] have designed this all-new medium-duty lineup that can meet the demands of our toughest customers with trucks that are cost-effective, ready for work and, most importantly, can help keep them going on the job,” he added. The Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel is new to the F-650 and F-750. The OEM noted that “the 6.7L Power Stroke and TorqShift have been developed and tested for mediumduty applications, with three horsepower and torque levels and a 5-yr./ 250,000-mi. limited warranty.” The diesel will be mated to a “com-

Ford pointed out that the Power Stroke engine’s “reverse-flow layout” places the exhaust inside the engine’s V-shape while the air intake is positioned on the outside of the V. According to Ford, much attention was paid to making the trucks work-truck capable, starting with an “all new, upfit friendly chassis developed in cooperation with leading industry body makers.” The effort included redesigning the area behind the cab to more easily accommodate custom work-truck bodies and keeping the chassis “clean” for “accommodating vocational bodies with little to no modification.” The trucks feature such auxiliary components as the diesel exhaust fluid tank and standard fuel tank now located under the cab instead of behind it on the frame. This allows for a “clean cab-to-axle design that satisfies more truck body applications and makes customizing easier, which helps reduce the customer’s final costs and time to delivery.”

Measuring SmartWay

T

This year marks the tenth anniversary of SmartWay, a public-private initiative from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the national supply chain. According to the EPA, SmartWay partners have saved 120.7 million barrels of oil (resulting in $16.8 billion in fuel savings) and 51.6 million tons of carbon dioxide over the past decade. SmartWay has As to truck tires, SmartWay has created a new market for made quite products that are designed to reduce rolling resistance and an impression improve fuel economy. Anyone looking for proof can in its 10 years check the EPA’s website and find 68 tire brands that cover more than 250 models of truck tires that are approved along with 12 retread brands and 38 tread designs. How many of these tires are verified as the result of advanced rubber compounding and/or tread design, and how many rely mostly on shallow tread depth? When 68 different brands can achieve the coveted SmartWay designation, it’s either a testament to manufacturing or a relatively easy target. Despite EPA’s claim that low rolling resistance (LRR) tires can reduce fuel consumption by 3%, it’s a much more complicated exercise to complete the data collection and perform the mathematics in order to convince the accountants. There are a wide variety of factors that contribute to the fuel mileage of a commercial truck and trailer; the 18 tires are just one of them. And while low rolling resistance tires and retreads play a role, I believe the jury is still out when trying to decipher how much of an impact they actually have on fuel consumption.

In the passenger and light truck replacement industry, the tire companies have spent millions to communicate the advantages of fuel-efficient tires. But the most innovative marketing campaigns in the history of tires have not been enough to convince most consumers that the extra cost for LRR technology is worth it. The hybrid-driving environmentalist crowd energizes the market more than anyone, but the payoff isn’t there so most drivers consider cost the most important factor followed by durability. Since they don’t have to worry about SmartWay or cost per mile like fleets, it’s a completely different decision-making process. I have to admit that I was shocked to see how minimal the gains have been in the past 10 years. But savings are still savings and reduced emissions are undoubtedly a benefit to everyone on the planet and a step in the right direction. I also know that a lot of new companies and thousands of jobs related to the types of technology that are improving fuel efficiency and eliminating some of the carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere have been created because of the SmartWay program. Rather than be critical of the EPA and the public perception that drives SmartWay, I’ll just tip my cap to the agency for making a difference without creating significant burdens for trucking. With more than 3,000 partners, it appears that participation has grown since 2004—and that is definitely a good thing. But LRR tires are not going to provide instant fuel mileage gains. The savings are still there; it’s just going to take the continued marketing advantages associated with SmartWay and some time/effort to fully realize the benefits of fuelefficient truck tires. AT

Periods of slow freight are a perfect time to seek out ideas from those within your organization on how to improve the efficiency and profitability of your operation. Involve your bankers and insurance agents as well.

Start by organizing several different brainstorming and problemsolving sessions, which should include both group meetings and oneon-one discussions with individual employees and contractors. Include mechanics, dispatchers, drivers and salespeople in the mix. One helpful tip, though, is to conduct the group brainstorming sessions at an off-site location. This will provide a more creative atmosphere that encourages people to think outside the box. For the best results, an effective

brainstorming session must have a structure and purpose. In other words, you don’t want to be all over the map. Te first step is to bring together department heads and ask each one to list the top five challenges in dayto-day operations. You also need to list your top five challenges for the entire company. Compare the lists. Are there any challenges that show up multiple times? If so, these then become the first challenges for which you’ll have the brainstorming session participants devise solutions. (Strive for a minimum of five and up to 10 challenges for the

brainstorming session.) Determine the date and location of the brainstorming session. Plan two and one-half hours for five challenges, three and one-half hours for 10 challenges. Assemble your brainstorming team into groups of five to seven people. Pick one person to be the group leader. The leader is responsible for maintaining order and keeping the group focused on the specific challenge at hand. The group leader will also write down all the solutions and ideas recommended by each member of the group.

GRAND THINKING

Each group tackles one challenge at a time in no more than 10 minutes. It’s important the group not get bogged down in discussing the details of the suggestions. The point of this exercise is to list as many solutions as possible in those 10 minutes. It’s also important that the group leader allow each member time to present his/her idea. This is accomplished by working in a clockwise fashion around the table, giving each person an opportunity to provide their solution. Provide each person with paper and a pen to jot down their ideas while waiting their turn. The group leader repeats the process of going in a clockwise fashion to each member for as many times as the 10 minutes permits. The more ideas and solutions, the better. When the 10 minutes are up, give everyone a five-minute break while you collect the solution lists for that challenge. Then distribute the second challenge to the groups. Do the same for all the challenges, and don’t forget to collect the solutions after

each 10-minute period. Once all the challenges have been completed and solution lists given to you, dismiss everyone except your department heads. Take a flip chart and list each challenge at the top, one per page. Gather the solution lists from all your groups for each specific chal-

List a solution below the challenge; each time that solution comes up on another group’s list for the same challenge, put a check mark next to it on the flip chart. Upon completion of this tally, you’ll see a picture emerge of the most popular to the least popular solutions for each challenge. Now follow these steps: ❑ Input the tallied lists from the flip charts into a word document and provide copies to each department head. He/she can review each solution and pick the most viable one for each challenge. ❑ Give each department head only the challenge(s) for their specific department and have them list the top three solutions for the challenge(s). ❑ Bring each department head into a one-on-one with you and look over all the lists for his/her department—the original, the de-

partment heads’ overall solutions and the solution he/she came up with—and figure out which three are doable. Develop a priority list of which solution needs to be completed first, second and third. Check the ROI, both in time and dollars. What is affordable?

FOLLOWING THROUGH

You then need to implement and prioritize each department’s solutions. Which one will have the greatest overall benefit to your company in terms of increasing efficiency, revenue and profit? Here’s the brainstorming session in a nutshell: ❑ Each group is dealt one major problem constraining your company—and given 10 minutes to solve it. ❑ Working under the gun, they rise to the challenge and hammer out bold new solutions. ❑ This is repeated until every problem has multiple solutions on the table. ❑ A leader from each group writes down the groups’ solutions, which are then presented to you (the owner/manager) and to your department heads to complete the process. Challenging your staff with a dynamic, fast-paced matrix forces the best solutions to the top. To build a strong company, you need to rely on the team you’ve assembled to take your business plan and make it work. Technological boost

The latest technology is helping drive safety improvements, fuel economy gains

By any measure, it was a large project. Con-way Freight, the less-than-truckload subsidiary of Con-way Inc., set out to deploy a suite of in-cab systems on 8,600 tractors based in 282 locations in just four months. “After a comprehensive evaluation, including analytical reviews and pilot programs, we decided to add several solutions at the same time,” says Tom Clark, the company’s senior vice president of operations. “We’re early in the journey with these new technologies, but we are confident that the systems will reduce incidents and improve safety and fuel efficiency.” Rolled out under the name Drive Safe Systems, Con-way Freight chose two primary technologies for simultaneous fleet-wide deployment. To give it more visibility and data about safetyrelated events, the company selected the DriveCam solution from Lytx Inc. The system provides feedback to help drivers recognize and correct unsafe behaviors. Windshield-mounted units record activity eight seconds before and four seconds after hard braking, turning or rapid deceleration events. Recording and supporting data is then uploaded to a cloud-based application where it is retrieved and reviewed with drivers in coaching sessions.

18 American Trucker/May 2014

Additionally, the fleet installed on-board performance management technology from Vnomics Corp. That system uses data on vehicle, road, load and environmental conditions and gives the driver real-time feedback in areas such as shifting and acceleration to achieve optimal fuel economy. DriveCam data at Con-way Freight is shared with drivers to both recognize exceptional performance and to provide coaching to identify improvement opportunities. “It’s a fundamental shift in our approach,” Clark adds. “Before, we reacted after the fact by analyzing accidents and why they occurred. Now, we’re focusing on coaching to adjust behaviors, remove risk, prevent incidents and improve safety. Early results show a decline in the number of safety-related events and their severity.”

A HISTORY WITH TECHNOLOGY The new systems at Con-way Freight join existing technologies that have been factory-installed in every new tractor in the fleet since late 2009, including Meritor Wabco OnGuard collision avoidance and roll stability control solutions and the Iteris AutoVue lane departure warning system. “The collision avoidance

system with adaptive cruise control has had a dramatic effect on frontend crashes in our operation,” Clark relates. “Incidents in our trucks with the system went down over 50%.” For its recent deployment, Conway Freight needed to implement the solutions as rapidly as possible to maximize benefits while also minimizing the disruption to daily fleet operations. To meet this need, the carrier contracted Velociti to provide project and inventory management, staging and configuration, installation, testing and verification, and post-installation support services. Velociti, a technology deployment provider, assigned more than 80 account and project managers, field technicians, system engineers, and quality control, staging and call center agents to oversee the project. Velociti also worked with the technology suppliers to establish installation guides, manufacture custom mounting brackets, and create placement templates to ensure consistency. “We find that our investments in tested and proven safety technologies provide measurable payback not just in reduced operating costs, but in significantly improved performance,” Clark states. hat’s happening at dealers and with the OEMs they represent should benefit fleet owners open to tapping into changes being made to better serve a marketplace in flux. Trucking is evolving away from the days when fleets were largely islands unto themselves. To get the most out of their business relationships with dealers, fleets are wise to grasp how these providers of everything from new trucks to vehicle parts and service are adapting to attract more business. David Gerrard, Navistar’s senior vice president-distribution, offers a unique view of this topic, as he managed two fleets earlier in his career and was dealer principal of Chicago International for five years before joining the OEM as a dealerchannel executive. “At the end of the day,” he observes, “the fleet’s success, now more than ever, will depend on the strength of its relationship with a dealer.” Gerrard says that’s because “there’s never been a time like this in terms of increasing demands being placed on fleet customers that are in turn driving changes at the dealer and OE levels.”

PRESSURE GROWS ON SERVICE

He says hours-of-service (HOS) rule changes are but one example. “HOS increases pressure on utilization. Just 10 years ago, it was nothing for a fleet to run with a 10% ‘spare factor.’ But with today’s demands on capital as well as the industry consolidation going on, that wiggle room is gone. And that turns up the heat on the expected level of sophistication and the service offerings provided by dealers.” “Today’s fleet customer should expect a dealer to provide solutions that meet their challenges, not just sell them a truck,” asserts Terry Billings, Volvo Trucks’ vice president of business development. “Selling

the right truck matched to the job is important. But equally important is providing an array of support offerings like financing and leasing, extended component coverage, parts programs and expanded hours of service, to name a few. ” Billings stresses that dealers can no longer succeed on retail sales alone. “Dealers should act as longterm business advisors and not be focused on just the short-term transaction. Before the sale, dealers should gather as many details [as possible] regarding all of the fleet’s operational needs. They should develop a profile of the fleet’s business objectives and operating goals. During the sales process, dealers should offer solutions—truck and products—that meet the customer’s needs.” In addition, he says dealers should “assess the customer’s acquisition type, like purchase vs. lease; determine the truck that’s best for the customer’s application with the strongest financial returns—both operationally and residually; and offer parts and support programs that will make the customer’s life much easier. After the sale, dealers should be a proactive partner, not a reactive supplier.” Jim Moeller, president of CSM Companies, the Madison, WI-based firm that operates 12 Kenworth dealerships in Wisconsin, Michi-

gan, and Nebraska, contends fleets should consider whether the dealer “brings the relationship from a transactional one to a partnership. “Finding a dealer partner that operates with a progressive mind-set that can fit [you] in long term is what I’d be looking for if I were a trucking company,” he continues. “Ensuring that you have someone who understands your business will really benefit the partnership for many years forward.”

CREATING CONVENIENCE

“Today’s fleet is dealing with more interferences and hurdles than ever before with their own operations,” points out Allen Lane, COO of CSTK Inc., a St. Louis-based dealer of Thermo King reefer units and other truck/trailer equipment. “Whether it’s the shippers and/or receivers demanding more or dealing with state and/or federal regulations as well as driver and technician shortages, the last thing they need is for their dealer relationship to be an inconvenience.” “For fleets,” Lane contends, “the dealer model needs to be one of convenience that offers a state-of-theart facility, extended hours and advanced technology. Each customer’s pain points and needs are different, so the dealer’s products and/or solutions need to be designed in such a manner as to offer an open architecture to service multiple different models.” According to Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks, “customers should expect an exceptional experience that begins at product inquiry and continues with each dealership ‘touch point’ after the sale. “The relationship often begins before the sale, when dealers learn

cover story about their customers’ business and product need,” she continues. “Dealers and customers work closely during the purchasing process to ensure the optimal specs, powertrain and telematics packages. That relationship continues by delivering on customer expectations to keep their fleet up and running with exceptional service and available parts.” Indeed, the type of service support dealers offer is critical, says Stephen Roy, president of North American sales & marketing for Mack Trucks. To ensure vehicle uptime, Mack dealers have invested $300 million collectively in their facilities since 2010. With 428 full-line and “secondary” dealership locations, service is available across the country with many dealers adding second and third locations.

BUILDING A CONNECTION Roy notes that the number of available service bays has climbed 40% and the number of technicians 50% since 2010. He adds that some 25% of Mack dealership techs now hold the “Master Technician” title and so have specialized skill sets in diagnostics and Mack driveline components. “Dealers, as you know, are all independently owned,” says Roy, “so

The pain points for each fleet are different, so dealers need solutions that meet a variety of needs and that might include mobile maintenance. what we’ve done as an OEM over the last three or four years is design systems such as ASIST and Mack Preferred to help better connect not only customers and dealers, but also dealers to other dealers and dealers with OE personnel. This provides better consistency from dealer to dealer and thus allows us to improve the Mack customer experience.” Navistar’s Gerrard contends that dealerships that make full-service leases available have a leg up on their competition. “I’d argue that International dealers that offer full-service leasing through Idealease tend to develop business relationships with fleets that are more long term and less transaction-based.” Whether it will be leased or not, he says that when considering a Technology allows dealers and fleets to work closely together to ensure parts are available in a timely manner.

new truck, the fleet should expect the dealer to come to the table with “comprehensive product knowledge that matches up to the specifics of the customer’s applications. This should be the case whether it is a small fleet or a national account to ensure that the trucks are correctly spec’d.

CUSTOMER CENTRIC OPTIONS “The dealer should also demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the customer’s business cycle,” Gerrard continues. “It’s key to have dealer personnel who are able to relate to day-to-day concerns, such as driver comfort, transmission choice, tire selection, etc., as well as lifecycle cost concerns. Above all, you don’t want to trip over dollars looking for pennies in savings.” CSM Companies’ Moeller says his firm thinks in terms of providing “concierge service—we will add resources that address a customer’s pain points. Philosophically, customers should be treated the same whether trucks are purchased locally from dealers or not. “In our case,” he continues, “we work very well with a strong Kenworth dealer network to ensure that the customer service feel is seamless. CSM has a team of servicesupport specialists that work around the clock to help reduce downtime around mission-disabling events and through our national network

Volvo’s Terry Billings says fleets should supply dealers with as much operating information as possible to ensure the best outcome. of dealers. As we say in our business, truck sales sell the first units while service sells the rest.” The experts agree that communication must be a two-way street between fleets and dealers for the optimum outcome. “Customers should share information that will ultimately impact a truck’s ability to make them more money,” says Freightliner’s Aufdemberg. “Dealers are product experts and excellent partners to optimize specs to meet the needs of different customers,” she continues. “Just to name a few, customers may want to share with dealers the specs of their current fleet, range, annual miles, capacity, weight, shipping lanes, overnights and terrain.”

DEVELOPING A PARTNERSHIP Moeller says the dealer needs to “understand the customer well enough to know what is important to them and their success. To be exceptional, we need to provide our products in such a way that it helps them close the gap between where they are and their goals.” As for what happens after the sale, Moeller contends that a dealership must keep customers’ operating costs in mind. “What we call ‘product support’ is what helps to mitigate

24 American Trucker/May 2014

the learning curve with new equipment and technology,” he remarks. “At CSM Companies, we have a product-support team that trains our customers on our vehicles and ‘white gloves’ their service experiences inside and outside our network of dealerships,” relates Moeller. “And lastly,” he adds, “as our customers get larger, trading in equipment becomes a much larger transaction. Fleets should seek a [dealer] partner that has scale to absorb and maximize residual values and demonstrate lifecycle cost advantages.” Moeller points out as well that “once trust is established, the dealer can add more value if the customer is open with information and data. Our dealership teams are often brought into the customer sales process to ensure we are advising customers on the right kinds of equipment even before the fleet acquires a new piece of business.” CSTK’s Lane suggests that “a fleet should be open to sharing with dealers from the start. What are their current pain points? What is more important, product availability or cost? The more we understand their needs, the more likely we are to become a business partner that works side by side with them.” To accomplish that, he says deal-

ers “need to invest in a robust customer relationship management system [CRM] for tracking of account calls tied to an account marketing plan. Dealer websites should have a lead-generation feature, through a product like Hub Spot, that feeds to the CRM system so the information generated can be facilitated by the marketing/sales department.

INFORMATION SHARING “Fleets need information that is a seamless resource with content [that reaches them] through [such avenues] as email campaigns and blogs on social media sites,” says Lane. “And on the dealer’s website, fleets need access to information portals that provide access to parts and service flyers, equipment and maintenance bulletins, industry calendars and newsletters.” “It’s important for a dealer to know as much as possible about the customer up front,” says Volvo’s Billings. “What are the customer’s biggest challenges as they relate to their trucking needs? What is their financial position and how is their company structured? Do they purchase their parts reactively or planned? What driver features are most important? How important are various product features? Who makes the

Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings

purchase decision? “If all this is known up front,” he continues, “truck salespersons and their finance and aftermarket support teams can then structure the best package to support a fleet’s needs. Then, the sale is no longer about the lowest price, but instead about the most cost-effective solution over the life of the asset.” Billings recommends keeping in mind that “a truck is a tool, a depreciating asset. Fleets should really consider the total cost of ownership of that asset and the support mechanisms that keep it running smoothly. They should consider the value of the dealership and the salesperson to their operation.

THE RIGHT PARTS Certainly, no dealer can overlook the importance of parts. “Parts are all about having the right part at the right place at the right time and at the right—that is, competitive—price, and it includes how fast the part can be obtained if not on hand,” says Navistar’s Gerrard. He says dealers should be expected to serve as reliable sources of both proprietary and all-makes parts and to bear in mind that “even in today’s service-oriented realm, price will always be a factor” for fleets. Gerrard notes that International dealers benefit from an “inventory alliance” parts ordering and management system. He explains that this generates a “predictive analysis of parts that each dealership should have in their rolling inventory determined by their customers’ VINs and part orders specific to their trucks.” “Freightliner uses cutting-edge technology that delivers dealer up-to-date and interactive product information at the touch of their fingertips,” Aufdemberg says. “This ‘virtual showroom’ allows dealer sales reps to provide an interactive product walkaround to a customer at any location.”

CSM Companies’ Moeller points out that the “fast pace of technology” is affecting how dealers operate as well as fleets. “Phoning, texting, email are all ways that have created immediate and 24/7 access. An example of the new uses of technology is the way we equip our parts salespeople with iPads that allow for looking up, ordering and having delivery of parts while they are at customer sites. “Our growth in communication is also evident with social media, such as Facebook, and, of course, through the direct interlinking of our customers’ business systems to ours that enables a quick way to process data,” he adds. Moeller stresses that “the interpersonal connection remains critical. At the end of the day, every dealership employee needs to act as if their livelihood depends on their business—because it does. “I appreciate that our business goes beyond transactional,” he continues. “Partnerships are hard to develop without interaction on a personal nature. Customers need to feel like they can have confidence in our people technically, have an absolute sense of our integrity, and feel that we do what we say we’re going to do. Bridging that relationship to include the factory support personnel is also key to [enabling customers to] buy

into the folks that provide value upstream.”

TECHNOLOGICAL APPROACH Yet, fleets will see ever more technology deployed by dealers. Mack’s Roy notes that the OEM is rolling out geofences around its dealership locations. In combination with Mack’s GuardDog Connect telematics service, these geofences allow the company to see, for instance, if a truck has been sitting on a dealership’s lot for an extended period of time waiting for service. If so, Roy says, Mack can get in touch with the dealer and assist in expediting the repair or providing technical assistance as warranted. Navistar’s Gerrard points out that “it hasn’t been all that long since fleets have gone from running fully warranty-capable, in-house shops to where they are now sending most work to truck dealers and engine distributors. Doing so, of course, lets fleets concentrate on their core competency.” “Most fleets are in the business to haul freight and not deal with trucks,” sums up Volvo’s Billings. “Fleets should not purchase solely on price, but recognize which OEM and dealer provide the best total solution to support the fleet’s business.” AT

Full-service leasing that includes maintenance services can give dealers an advantage over the competition.

MANAGER: David Paul TITLE: Fleet operations manager FLEET: Air Liquide USA, Houston, TX OPERATION: 353 day cab, single- and dual-sleeper highway tractors hauling industrial gases

F

leet safety is a big deal at Air Liquide USA LLC, so much so that the bulk carrier is investing big bucks to spec new trucks with a slew of safety systems that include collision prevention technology, lane departure warning, and blind-spot radar-powered sensors, to name just a few. “We currently have 353 tractors in our fleet, and we replaced 133 in 2012 and another 145 at the end of 2013,” says David Paul, Air Liquide’s fleet operations manager. He added that the company’s plan for its gaseous bulk-hauling fleet is to replace another 100 trucks this year. The goal is to turn over the trucks

every 48 months. The average truck will have been driven 500,000 mi. in that time. “This will help reduce our maintenance costs and maintain the reliability of our fleet to meet customer demand and expectations,” he explains. “This next purchase will replace all of our remaining 2009 fleet units so that all of our tractors will have the latest safety technology installed.” The tractors—a mix of day cabs, single- and dualsleeper cabs—are being equipped with advanced safety technologies. The question, though, is how does the addition of those systems affect maintenance?

he first step is keeping Air Liquide’s field maintenance technicians up to date with the requirements of those new technologies, explains Paul. “We are using our vendors to provide on-site, hands-on training at our field locations and have our techniSOLUTION cians attend our vendors’ local training at their facilities,” he explains. “We also have three fleet field maintenance supervisors who also attend all vendor-led training so they become subject matter experts to assist the field technicians.” To better ensure that all technicians receive the same information, Paul adds that his fleet holds monthly maintenance conference calls to allow the techs to discuss any challenges or updates they may have. He also expects Air Liquide’s fleet to experience some maintenance savings as a result of its investment in the safety systems. For example, its new trucks feature an air disc brake system that reduces stopping distance by 25%, as compared to conventional brakes, while also reducing related repair costs. The addition of a stability control system that works in conjunction with the air brake system helps prevent rollovers by applying each wheel’s brakes in the cor-

T

rect sequence. It also reduces maintenance, Paul says. “In conjunction with the air disc brakes, the Vorad [collision avoidance] system, the Meritor Wabco OnGuard brake assist application, and the Iteris [AutoVue] lane departure warning device all work together to help the driver avoid rear end and side impact collisions. [This helps] keep the driver’s attention focused on the task and reduces accident-related expenses,” Paul notes. “All of our trucks are also equipped with Lytx DriveCam units that serve two purposes: first, to protect the driver in non-preventable events and second, to help us identify and correct driving behavior issues behind the wheel,” he adds. Convincing the drivers to accept all of this technology can be a daunting task, Paul explains. “But we make it clear that this new technology is there to assist the driver with the ability to return home to their families and loved ones in the same condition they came to work in,” he stresses. “We also share success stories at our monthly sequential safety meetings where this technology has been instrumental in accident or incident avoidance or exonerating a driver in a non-preventable situation.” —SEAN KILCARR

formed at 50,000 mi. Tires are rotated every 10,000 mi.

Do you have regularly scheduled routes or on-demand delivery?

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?

We have 17 trucks that usually run regularly scheduled routes. We also have eight trucks that usually go on demand.

We buy tires with a good tread wear rating and keep them rotated so they wear evenly. We also check tire pressure often.

How is maintenance handled? Your own shop or jobbed out? Most maintenance is jobbed out. Service technicians schedule their own oil changes, tire rotations, etc., with a local service shop where we have an account.

What about major repairs? Your own shop or jobbed out? All major repairs are jobbed out. A supervisor evaluates and schedules any major repairs.

Servall Owner: Jerry N. Lewis Branch manager: Martin Cobb In business: Since 1983 Location: Martin, TN Website: www.servallmartin.com Servall LLC was founded in 1963 . The Ken-Tenn area/ Martin, TN, location opened in 1983. Its primary business focus is termite, pest control and home repair. The company provides services to customers with its fleet of 1/2 ton pickups, each carrying from 50to 200-gal. tanks containing termiticides, pesticides, tools and equipment.

What three challenges do you face with your maintenance program? How do you resolve each of these? 1. To keep maintenance services on schedule. We resolved this challenge with a computer program. The program flags each driver when it is time to schedule a routine maintenance service. 2. To keep the trucks presentable as far as cleanliness and organization. We have routine truck inspections. We also have an in-house wash bay and vacuum center. 3. Cost of routine maintenance for a small business. We are working with a service facility that is offering us a fleet discount on routine maintenance services & repairs.

How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? We use a facility that has a designated mechanic for our trucks so we have a much quicker turnaround time. They also will pick up and deliver our trucks if needed. We require oil changes every 5,000 mi. Transmission services are per-

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? If you stock parts, which ones? We stock a minimal amount of parts such as fuses, bulbs, etc. Most of our parts are bought as needed.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck?

We track the ongoing expense of each truck. When maintenance expenses become greater than the average maintenance cost, the truck is replaced. In some cases, trucks are replaced due to age and appearance.

What are your specifications for your trucks? Are you able to find these on the used market? Do you purchase used and customize them to your specs? Or order new trucks built to your specs? All trucks are to be blue, our company color. We normally purchase them new and customize them once purchased.

What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) compliance for your trucks and or trailers? We have routine safety meetings and truck inspections, maintain a drug-free workplace, and enforce the “no cell phone use while driving” law. LED lighting T

he return on investment in LED vehicle lighting has been well known since the late 1980s. LEDs lower lighting maintenance costs and downtime because they have a rated life of as much as 20 times that of incandescent bulb lamps and help reduce replacement costs because they are nearly impervious to shock and vibration. There are also safety benefits, says Tim Walker, executive vice president-sales at Truck-Lite. “LED lamps have a faster ‘rise’ time compared to incandescent lamps,” he explains, “and a brighter, whiter, broader beam pattern that enhances visibility. LED headlamps can also reduce driver fatigue because the light they produce is rich in a spectral wavelength that research shows can inhibit the production of melatonin, a naturally produced hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep.” Jennifer Bontomasi, product manager at Wagner Lighting Products, a brand of the Federal-Mogul Vehicle Components business segment, adds that LED headlamps produce a pure white light that is the closest to daylight among current lighting technologies. LEDs also have a beam pattern that is 25% wider and can project light 150 ft. further down the road. The latest LED vehicle lighting technologies from suppliers reduce inventory and carrying costs, notes Tom Draper, press manager at Grote Industries. “A stop/tail/ turn design is available for systems with separate turn lamps,” he says, “and there are 4- or 6-in. combination stop/tail/turn and backup lamps that eliminate the need for two lamps per side and dispense with extra wiring.” Grote’s latest 6-in. oval combination stop/tail/turn and backup lamp features an element with a symmetrical design that meets all legal requirements at any mounting angle. Draper also points out that its industry standard size saves time and money on installation as it fits existing mounting grommets, brackets and flanges, and no modification to harnesses is required. A 4-in. round version of the lamp will be available in the third quarter of this year. Phillips Industries’ newly announced partnership with Innotec will package the manufacturer’s BoardFree LED lights with Phillips Sta-Dry trailer harnesses. The product package from Phillips is initially available for OEM installations, and an aftermarket launch is planned by June.

“Innotec’s BoardFree in-mold technology eliminates the need for a traditional printed circuit board,” explains Rob Phillips, president. “Other features ... are sealed components for protection and diodes directly mounted to the circuitry to more efficiently dissipate heat that can cause LED diodes to fail when the air gap is overheated.” Peterson Manufacturing has expanded its LumenX LED line with 4-in. round and 6-in. oval stop/tail/turn designs featuring an integrated backup lamp. The 2-in-1 lights embed a small white lens within the main red LumenX lens, allowing one of the seven diodes to provide DOT-legal backup functionality. “Integrating a white back-up light into a red lamp was a feasible extension of the LumenX architecture,” says John Hansen, project engineer. “The challenge was to have a consistent look from reds to ambers to backups. White diodes offer superior thermal management, and when paired with lens optics enhance brightness and eliminate dead spots.” Brad Van Riper, Truck-Lite’s senior vice president and chief technology officer, says a primary focus is on the enhancement of LED forward lighting using emerging technologies. “We’re pursuing the use of Adaptive Main Beam headlamps for commercial vehicles, Matrix Beam Headlights, and Laser Activated Remote Phosphor headlamps,” he says. “We believe these new technologies have the potential to generate more light from smaller packages.” “We’re working on new-concept LED lighting solutions that do away with complex housings, reflectors, and the now-standard apparatus that accompanies vehicle lamps,” says John Grote, global vice president-sales FOR MORE INFORMATION, and marketing at Grote Industries. “These new VISIT THESE WEBSITES: concepts will dramatically Federal Mogul simplify lighting installa- www.federalmogul.com tions, reduce costs, and increase the life expectancy Grote Industries of vehicle lighting in most www.grote.com applications.” Optronics Interna- Peterson Manufacturing tional has released a single- www.pmlights.com diode alternative to incandescent lamps.
