By now, no doubt, the word is out that truck orders are on the downswing. That shouldn’t surprise anyone as the global economy is decidedly on shaky footing. Indeed, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) now expects global economic growth to drop from close to 4% in 2011 to about 3.5% in 2012, picking back up to 4.1% in 2013. The IMF raised its gross domestic product (GDP) growth projections for the U.S. to 2.1% Truck makers overall for 2012 and 2.4% for 2013, compared to adjusting 1.7% in 2011; however, without GDP above 3%, we’re not going to make much headway to reto economy place all the jobs lost during the recession. Faced with those kinds of numbers, it shouldn’t shock anyone that truckers are pulling in their wings a bit. Eric Starks, president of FTR Associates, told me his firm lowered its Class 8 production/shipment forecast for North America to 275,000 units for 2012, down from 286,000 units back in March. “On the freight side, volumes have eased back, and though truck capacity is still tight, cost pressures have gone up—especially fuel prices,” Starks explained. “That’s creating some uncertainty, and thus fleets are becoming more skittish about buying trucks.” Paccar believes U.S. and Canadian industry retail sales this year should reach between 210,000 and 240,000 vehicles from 197,000 in 2011, yet it said annual replacement demand is estimated to be about 225,000 units, leading to the possibility that volumes may fall below replacement levels this year. It may be time to shift back to the slow lane. AT

All-in-one EOBR solution
Haul what is needed I
C
ontinental Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket debuted its new VDO RoadLog electronic onboard recorder (EOBR) for the commercial vehicle market, describing it as a “simple, all-in-one solution” for daily logbook and other compliance reporting. The company noted that it is designed to allow drivers and fleets to record and report hours of service and other key compliance data quickly, easily and without monthly fees. “With CSA, the new enforcement and compliance process for the trucking industry, in place, EOBRs will be playing a key role in helping fleets and independent operators protect and improve their CSA scores,” said Alexis Capelle, segment leader-tachograph, telematics and services for Continental Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket Business Unit NAFTA. “Our new VDO RoadLog electronic onboard recorder will set the standard for cost-effectiveness and overall simplicity.” VDO RoadLog can automatically track a driver’s time in one of four categories—on-duty, driving, sleeper berth, and off-duty—and provide a warning if allowable limits will be exceeded. The driver’s data can be transferred from a USB without the need for a smartphone, said Capelle. A built-in printer provides an instant paper report of daily logbook data at roadside inspection so drivers can get back on the road quickly. According to Capelle, RoadLog’s printout delivers all the information provided by a handwritten log but does

so faster, easier and more accurately. VDO RoadLog can record data for a variety of reports, including vehicle maintenance and inspection, International Fuel Tax Agreement, and International Registration Plan. The VDO RoadLog Fleet Management software provides all the key data needed to manage an unlimited number of drivers and vehicles. As a one-time purchase, it represents an excellent value compared to software charged monthly for each user, pointed out Capelle, who noted that fleet managers can download a driver’s data in seconds from the RoadLog Driver Key USB. In addition, an optional wireless download feature will be available in 2013 to allow data collection via cellular networks. Another key feature of the EOBR is that permission to access data from the RoadLog EOBR is possible only with the driver key or fleet key USBs. Capelle added that the unit “offers plug-and-play installation, so it can be operational on any heavy-duty rig in a matter of minutes.” www.conti-online.com

n trucking, following the crowd creates mediocrity not success for most carriers. This doesn’t mean that a small or micro carrier that hauls general freight will fail; it just limits the company’s financial growth unless the carrier wants to increase the number of hauling units. To be successful while remaining small, you need to haul either what the majority of truckers don’t want to haul or haul to areas considered to be undesirable. You need to find those things which most truckers find to be undesirable, rendering them impossible to most mind-sets; for example, the trucker who hauls horse manure from race tracks to mushroom farmers, or the carrier that moves furniture and belongings from burned-out buildings to the companies that restore the items and deodorize them in ozone vaults. The list goes on and on and is limited only by your imagination. Nevertheless, the one common denominator is that it takes the small or micro motor carrier to have the flexibility to haul unattractive loads or go to undesirable locations. Success follows when doing the impossible becomes the probable . Tire monitoring C
ontinental Tire the Americas unveiled a commercialvehicle specific advanced tire pressure monitoring system. ContiPressureCheck continually monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire, providing real-time tire status and warning of potential problems, including underinflation. The system integrates sensors, a communication system, and a data processor into a single module housed inside a rubber container and glued to the inner surface of the tire to monitor air pressure and tire temperature. Data is sent wirelessly to the truck’s electronic control unit,

Monitor tire, air bag pressure T ire pressure monitoring and an automated air bag transfer system are among the new products from Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems. The SmarTire tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is expected to be launched in the third quarter as an aftermarket retrofit kit as well as an original equipment option. It monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire and provides real-time status updates to the driver or maintenance technician. A typical kit would consist of eight wheel sensors, harnessing, and a wireless receiver.
When paired with the latest version of SmarTire for tractors, the system will wirelessly link with the trailer, displaying both the truck and the trailer tire information on the existing TPMS display. The technology will provide warnings of problems before they become a safety hazard, Bendix said. In addition to relevant tire information, the in-vehicle dash display provides a deviation value that shows the amount of overinflation or underinflation from each tire’s cold inflation pressure. Among other new products is
eTrac, an automated air pressure transfer system for 6x2 suspensions. The system is an add-on to Bendix’s ABS-6 braking system with automatic traction control. Designed for tractors and trucks, eTrac fully automates what currently is a manual system of air pressure transfer, Bendix said. When added to the Smart ATC (automatic traction control) and ABS-6 Advanced with ESP electronic stability program, eTrac automatically engages and disengages the airbag pressure transfer system in low-traction events. www.bendix.com

Tread-depth dilemma
I
I f I had a quarter for every phone call that started with the words, “My customer got a ticket for…,” I would have a whole bunch of quarters. There seems to be some varying interpretations of the federal regulations on truck tire and wheel inspection, so I thought it was time to dedicate a column to help clear up some of the confusion. One area that seems to surface quite often is minimum tread depth. to FedConflicting rule According eral Motor Carrier Administration interpretations Safety (FMCSA) regulations, minimum tread create confusion the depth for a steer tire is 4/32 of an inch on every major tread groove. If one spot on one groove is less than 4/32, then a driver will be issued a citation. The thin decoupling groove at the shoulder, however, is not a major groove. It can theoretically be worn away and the tire will remain in compliance as long as the major grooves are 4/32 when measured anywhere on the tire and there are no other conditions that warrant a violation. These same rules apply to drive and trailer tires, but the minimum tread depth is 2/32 of an inch in every major groove. It’s also important to note that the tread depth measurements cannot be taken at the wear indicators or stone ejectors. On the other hand, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has a completely different rule regarding the minimum tread depth on steer tires. According to CVSA, if the tread depth on a steer tire is less than 2/32 of an inch in two adjacent grooves, then the vehicle is placed out of service until the tire is replaced. The tires on all other wheel positions must have a tread depth of at least 1/32 when measured in any two adjacent grooves at three separate locations at least 8 in. apart around the circum-

ference of the tire or the vehicle is placed out of service. When a vehicle is declared out of service per CVSA, citations under FMCSA are a certainty. The driver will be issued tickets for every violation that is in place and the vehicle cannot be moved until the out-of-service violations are remedied. So a driver who operates a vehicle with a steer tire that has a tread depth of 3/32 will be ticketed, but the truck will not be placed out of service. Likewise, if drive or trailer tires have a tread depth of at least 1/32 in every major groove or the worn spots are not adjacent, the driver will be issued citations, but the vehicle can remain in service. Another issue that surfaces regularly is the number of threads that must extend beyond the body of the wheel nut. I’ve heard everything from one visible thread to three visible threads, but have yet to find it anywhere in writing. Appendix G to Subchapter B outlines the minimum periodic inspection standards for FMCSA and the only applicable regulation refers to “loose, missing, broken, cracked, stripped or otherwise ineffective fasteners.” The general rule in the industry is full thread engagement, but that doesn’t stop overly aggressive vehicle enforcement officials from making their own interpretations of “ineffective fasteners.” In most cases, there is a distinct difference between a condition that causes a vehicle to fail inspection and an out-of-service condition. Drivers will be ticketed for every condition under FMCSA inspection guidelines, but the vehicle can remain in service as long as CVSA inspection criteria are met. With the Compliance, Safety, Accountability program in place, drivers should know the difference between the two. AT

PICKUP & DELIVERY
Always at the ready P&D fleets turn to PV Rentals
F
From Craig Burt’s perspective, the economy is turning around. “We’re seeing business growth among our customers with pickup and delivery operations,” says the general manager at Houston-based PV Rentals LLC. “For us that means opportunities to expand our market while meeting the growing needs of companies that use trucks and vans.” Successfully meeting the needs of P&D customers who operate in a number of different industries is the result of several things, Burt notes. “Over the years, we’ve learned how to address their load and capacity requirements,” he says. “We’ve also developed relationships with key partners, including truck dealers. For example, Rush Truck Centers has

leveraged its partnerships with upfitters for bodies, refrigeration units and liftgates on our behalf for 10 years.” PV Rentals and its sister company PV Leasing serve small local businesses as well as Fortune 100 companies, whether they operate one or 100 trucks. Those include furniture delivery operations, providers of food and dry goods, haulers of production equipment, and even a nationwide firm that picks up and delivers home medical equipment. For P&D operations, Burt relates, the availability of rental vehicles to meet short-term needs is beneficial. “As business expands for those companies, they can quickly and easily supplement their existing fleets to handle surges in demand, market

shifts or special orders,” he states. “They can also use rentals to test markets and routes, and to reduce the number of vehicles in their fleets during slower parts of their business cycles. “While rental is a way for P&D operations to avoid tying up capital,” Burt continues, “we also work with them to develop individualized leasing programs. We offer flexible terms, including open and closed lease programs with purchase options and extension agreements.” The PV Rentals and PV Leasing fleet encompasses 35 different vehicle types, including dry and refrigerated box and stake body trucks, cargo vans and pickups, and vans that carry up to 15 passengers, SUVs and cars. Vehicles are cycled through the rental and/or leasing divisions then through the sales department, which keeps the fleet updated and streamlines the replacement cycle. About 100 of the trucks in the PV Rentals fleet are 14- and 16-ft. Isuzu regular and crew cab models fitted with dry freight, refrigerated and stake bodies. Trucks in the fleet include 14-, 16-, 20- and 24-ft. dry freight units and 16-ft. refrigerated models. There are also 12-, 14-, 20and 22-ft. stake bodies and 22-ft. flatbeds. “Today, we have three rental locations in the Houston area with expansion plans underway,” says Carol MacNeil, business development manager. “We are exploring opportunities to open new offices in other areas of Texas, including the southern region of the state. The growth being experienced in oil fieldrelated services brings more demand for our type of vehicles in those regions, which in turn boosts the need for pickup and delivery fleets. We are committed to continuing to provide knowledgeable and dependable service to all our customers as we expand.”

hile many fleets expressed trepidation when the trucking industry switched over to ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel back in 2006, that changeover recently blossomed into a full-blown nightmare of sorts for the West Virginia Dept. of Highways. Matt Long, the department’s highway equipment supervisor, explained that the “winter blends” of ULSD— with a maximum sulfur content of 15 parts per million (ppm) versus the 500 ppm standard used prior to 2006—turned it into a “super solvent” of sorts; the sprayon lining coating the inner walls of his fleet’s Ford F-550
fuel tanks was completely dissolved. The resulting “goo,” as Long described it, would clog the truck’s fuel pump and filters, plus damage engine injectors, resulting in a price tag of anywhere from $10,000 to $12,000 to fix the whole mess. “It had to do with the composition of the spray-on lining and how it reacted with the chemicals used to treat winter blends of ULSD,” he said. While Ford changed the formula for its spray-on linings, order backlogs for the new tanks meant the West Virginia Dept. of Highways faced long stretches of downtime for 30 to 40 of the afflicted F-550 trucks in its fleet.
A
Titan’s cross-linked polyethylene tanks, our department made the decision to replace all the steel fuel tanks on our Ford F-350, F-450 and F-550 cab and chassis vehicles with them,” Long said. “We’ve been using those for a full year now, through one whole winter, and haven’t experienced any problems.” Titan’s 40-gal. polymer tanks are designed to replace both the standard 37- and 40-gal. OEM tanks on Ford truck models built between 1999 and 2010, as well as for diesel-powered E-Series vans. The company noted that each of its “plastic” fuel tanks comes with a rollover vent valve, vent hose, drain plug for easier maintenance, and is covered by a five-year limited warranty. The tanks are also shipped in the form of a complete replacement kit, noted Titan, yet they are designed to reuse most of the vehicle’s stock components, including the existing “fuel sending” unit. For Long, though, one of the biggest benefits he discovered when his fleet switched to Titan’s fuel tanks was that they could be installed at a cost and time allotment similar to steel fuel tanks. “It really required no more work or extra money to swap out our steel tanks for the plastic ones,” he said. —SEAN KILCARR
PROBLEM
s a result of the delays in getting new steel tanks, Long had a dilemma on his hands. “We couldn’t reuse the tanks because, first, there’s the problem of respraying lining material on the inside of a sealed tank,” Long said. “And you can’t use a steel fuel tank without a lining because ULSD is produced via a ‘hydrotreating’ process, meaning it uses water. So without that lining, the water in the fuel, which also leads to increased bacterial growth, would gradually corrode the tank from the inside out.” After considering the problem and analyzing the issues that would arise from 30 to 40 of its vehicles being out of service, Long began exploring an alternative solution—tanks made of plastic or, more specifically, tanks made from a heavy-duty, military-grade, cross-linked polyethylene resin. Made by Titan Fuel Tanks, this polymer-based aftermarket fuel tank is practically impervious to the corrosive effects of hydrotreated diesel and biodiesel fuels, while resisting the “super solvent” effect created by fuel additives that degraded steel fuel tank protective linings in the past, the company said. “After analyzing the results of a trial program using

Navigating a crisis Returning to the basics of business can help you through difficult times

t’s inevitable that crises will arise from time to time in any business—and trucking is no exception. As a business owner, how you react and handle an unscheduled crisis will determine how quickly you get it resolved. Let’s take a look at what not to do in a crisis. ❏ Don’t substantially increase the number of loads without the trucks and drivers to handle them. Running out of loads can cripple your business, but so can the in-

creased cost of trying to play catchup by obtaining trucks and trailers, hiring, and training new drivers. There are times and places to grow, but during an emergency or crisis is not one of them. Have a preset loadto-truck ratio based on your current capacity of trucks and drivers. Make sure it fits the likely demand of your current customer base with anticipated increases and decreases in available loads. ❏ Don’t dramatically increase your total number of new shippers in a crisis.
Go to
Taking on too many new customers during a crisis adds to the complexity of challenges your operation faces. Too many new shippers with too many demands that are different from those of your current customers can put an unnecessary strain on sales, operations, and your drivers. With that said, however, if you’re largely dependent on one shipper or broker for the vast majority of your loads, then you need to establish at least one or two other sources. If you currently have a customer

who represents over 30% of your total loads, you’re already headed for a crisis. If this shipper coughs, your operation will get the flu. If your shipper gets the flu, it could be potentially terminal for your trucking company. You need to be prospecting for additional shippers or brokers immediately. ❏ Don’t put your trucking operation on steroids. Again, this is about not going overboard and overreacting to the crisis. The best way through a crisis is to come back to the basics of business. Think lean, control costs, and create revenue without substantially increasing costs. Use the KISS (Keep It Super Simple) principle when assessing the situation. Make lateral moves not growth. Look at reducing current risks not increasing liability with new ones. ❏ Don’t bring loads in-house. If you’re using lease operators, sometimes your operation risks service interruption, but bringing those functions in-house and having to add trucks and company drivers in an emergency can create higher costs and even greater risks to your operation at a fragile time. Instead of bringing loads back in-house, create backup sources to haul loads, possibly working with another even smaller carrier or a power-only drive-away carrier to fill the voids. Establish these relationships well in advance of need, so you can make one call in an emergency. Any load that made sense to outsource before a crisis hits still makes sense to outsource; just find a better way. If you currently aren’t utilizing lease operators, then jumping into the owner-operator contracting arena in a crisis is not a good plan either. If you’ve used strictly company employee drivers to this point, look into utilizing a power-only car-

rier to pull your loaded trailers. ❏ Don’t change for the sake of change. Successful small and micro motor carriers are great at adapting. Flexibility is one of the great attributes of being small. Successful trucking company owners are quick to embrace change. But only change your business model based on logic and foresight. Don’t react just because you think you need to “do something.” Other than taking steps to overcome the
The best first step in any crisis is to take a step back and make smart changes. short-term challenge, sometimes the best response to a crisis is actually no response. ❏ Don’t ignore the increasing costs during a crisis. This is a very dangerous road to go down. While there may be a temporary spike in costs while dealing with a crisis, it’s extremely important to maintain control over all your costs. In fact, many times the best solution to a revenue or cost crisis is to do a line item cost analysis of each piece of equipment you own and operate. It’s an effective way to evaluate whether a piece of equipment is beneficial to revenue production or is becoming a money pit. ❏ Don’t forget to prospect for new customers. Continual prospecting for new customers or looking to current shippers and brokers for additional loads should never

be set on the backburner. Returning to the basics of business is always an excellent means of gaining control in a crisis, and prospecting for additional loads is one of those basics. Always have other loads and customers sitting in reserve, so if one of your current shippers burps or gets the flu, you can simply switch to one of the reserves and your crisis becomes a non-event. What should you do after a business crisis? Take a hard look at your freight lanes and the strength of your customer base. Try to find potential weaknesses in your dispatching and load prospecting. Evaluate how you manage outsourced functions. Your goal is to look for glaring weaknesses, not to create new plans and systems that will mitigate every potential risk you could conceivably face. By its nature, trucking is unpredictable, with minor crises occurring almost daily. There’s weather, breakdowns, unexpected personal events with employees and contractors, slip-ups in planning by shippers and receivers, and the fact that any truck traveling down the highway is a microsecond from the next emergency. The best first step in any crisis is to take a step back and make smart changes where necessary; otherwise, stay focused on what made your business successful in the first place. Remember, trucking is a series of events with completion at the point of unload, with the next series of events beginning when your driver closes the doors on his empty trailer to head to the next pickup. Trucking happens—and you’ll deal with it. AT

Making parts support smarter and simpler for truckers
A
s the average age of Class 8 tractors reached a record high of 9.5 years in late 2011, a corresponding spike developed for parts and repair services needed to keep such old equipment up and running. As a result, OEMs, dealers and independents alike began—and continue—to deploy a variety of different methods to try and meet as much of this expanding afermarket demand as possible while streamlining and simplifying the process for themselves and their customers alike. For example, Bryan Martin, owner of 4 State Trucks and head of the Chrome Shop Mafia made famous on the Country Music Television show Trick My Truck, specifically expanded the new, used, and salvage parts mix at his 40,000-sq.-f. retail location located off I-44 just outside Joplin, MO, to create a onestop shop environment designed to meet almost any parts need for a wider range of customers. “Te key for us is parts diversity,” he explains. “We don’t want all of our eggs in one basket. Tat’s why we offer new parts, used parts, and a ‘yard sale’ style setup for salvage parts so we can appeal to all levels of parts needs within the trucking business.”
meeting demand
Martin’s philosophy is to offer a Wal-Mart Super Store retail environment for parts, yet couple it with a mom-and-pop style of approach to service. “We figure if we get someone in here once looking for a particular component, and we have it in stock and win them over with our service,
Go to
they will always come back,” he says. Martin credits that approach to helping 4 State Trucks weather the Great Recession and sluggish economic recovery of the past few years. “When times get tough, there’s a lot more demand for used and salvage parts,” he adds. “And when times get better, sales of new parts, chrome accessories, etc., begin to rise. We want to be in a position to serve both ends of the parts market so we keep business coming in during the rough patches.” Big dealership chains are following a similar philosophy as well. Rush Enterprises Inc., which operates one of the largest commercial vehicle dealership chains in North America, notes that aftermarket services, including parts sales, accounted for about 63% of the company’s total gross profits in 2011. Indeed, W. M. “Rusty” Rush, the company’s president & CEO, stressed in the firm’s annual report that expanding afermarket capabilities is one of three critical strategic focus points for his family’s business going forward. (Te company booked $2.5 billion in revenue last year.)

“Parts, service and body shop revenues reached record highs in March [2011] and continued to climb throughout the second and third quarter of 2011, remaining strong through the year’s end,” Rush says. “Te resulting record absorption rate of 117% for the fourth quarter of 2011 and an annual absorption rate of 114%— our highest ever—[is due to] increased service needs of aging vehicles as well as incremental business generated by service solutions we are providing to our customers.” Rush adds that the company plans to continue seeking opportunities to expand aftermarket services it provides customers, and he expects parts, service and body shop revenues to remain strong throughout 2012.
managing inventory
Such expansion is also occurring as managing parts inventory is becoming a bigger and more expensive chore for fleet parts and service managers, notes Paul Tuomi, director of parts sales for Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA). “As truck engines become more complex with ever more sophisticated emissions controls, there are literally more parts per truck to keep track of and stock,” he explains. “For this reason, many fleets look at outsourcing much of their parts needs to dealers and distributors, moving that responsibility, cost and risk away from their operations. Together with OEM truck leasing and contract maintenance programs, this appears to be a growing trend.” “A lot of fleets are outsourcing

As trucks get older, demand for parts keeps rising. parts inventory and management to dealerships to maintain better control of their inventory, reduce obsolescence, increase inventory turns, and reduce downtime,” adds Chris Harrison, general manager of CIT Group Inc., a Kenworth dealership chain headquartered in Morton, IL.
MORE PARTS
“Advancements in electronics and emissions systems also require a lot more parts on a truck, [which] require more parts to be placed in inventory,” he says. “Because many of these parts are fairly expensive, it’s more critical to have stricter parts inventory control so you have the right part at the right time to avoid downtime.” Dale Brubaker, director of parts operations for Navistar Parts, a division of truck maker Navistar Inc., says that the parts population is only going to keep growing, but
26 American Trucker/June 2012
that isn’t necessarily a bad thing for fleets. “For example, aerodynamic improvements that improve fuel economy might require more parts,” he says. “But that also means fleets are demanding that their OEMs be more flexible in how they support their needs.” Navistar is using a proprietary Dealer Inventory Alliance, or DIA, system to help its dealers strike the right balance of parts availability and inventory cost by identifying what parts dealers absolutely need and what parts they don’t need. “There’s a certain population of parts that every dealer needs to stock based on the products currently on the road that may require service, but the system also helps develop customized inventory plans for dealers based on their sales history,” Brubaker explains. “Our goal is to have the right part at the dealership when a truck comes in to be fixed.”
Go to
CIT’s Harrison uses similar technology as well, called Kenworth PremierCare Connect, to help improve parts as well as maintenance support for customers. He says this system, also used by its brother-in-arms Peterbilt Truck Co. under the name TruckCare Connect, allows fleets to maintain much better inventory control because it offers more robust parts control reports such as usage reports, reorder reports, obsolescence reports, etc.
FUNCTIONALITY
“The system also ties in-house repairs to a work order,” Harrison explains. “That functionality allows fleets to track warranties and produce cost-per-mile reports for each vehicle. These reports allow the fleet to see which parts are high usage, and the system can be set to automatically reorder those parts on a

daily basis, making sure the part is always available.” He also points out that a lot of fleets are outsourcing parts inventory/management to dealerships to maintain better control of their inventory and reduce obsolescence, increase inventory turns, and reduce downtime. “Outsourcing allows them to have the right parts on hand at the time they’re needed,” Harrison stresses. Brett Fincham, DTNA’s manager of fleet sales, notes that while inventory turn or sell-through isn’t the same as reduction, it offers many similar benefits for customers. And like other OEMs, DTNA has also crafted a wider and deeper parts offering connected with technology to make the entire parts process simpler for fleets to manage.
PRICING
“Our OEConnection system, for example, enables our distribution centers, dealers and distributors to quickly locate parts stocked anywhere in the system. That can mean the difference between hours and days in the shop depending on how close the needed part is,” he says. “With a mix of proprietary genuine OEM parts and parts from key industry vendors, we offer complete parts inventories for any service need,” Fincham adds. “And when it doesn’t have to be new, we offer Detroit Reman parts from our own domestic remanufacturing operations, helping our fleet and other customers achieve the lowest total cost of ownership for the truck assets they own.” There’s also DTNA’s Alliance Truck Parts all-makes replacement line for when genuine OEM parts aren’t the customers’ first choice, for whatever the reason. “The Alliance Truck Parts brand is itself a tool for many fleets—and at the other end, parts retailers—to manage costs,” Fincham says. “The
Go to
Demand for inexpensive used and salvage parts is also rising. lines carried by Alliance are positioned very intentionally to fall into the lower-priced value category while offering better quality on the good, better, best continuum. That positioning offers fleets a real choice when looking at replacement parts for their trucks.” He says that this means customers don’t have to go for the “generic white box” replacement part, accepting a high level of uncertainty in quality just to get a good price. That’s also what’s driving OEMs to try and “bundle” more aftermarket services together. Volvo Trucks
recently created a new division called Volvo Trucks Support Services to help provide fleets in the U.S. and Canada with more customized support solutions, relates David Pardue, Volvo’s vp-aftermarket solutions. “Bundling truck support services can help protect assets, improve operational efficiency, offer a one-stop shop for service and parts information, and provide the fleet options to manage costs,” he explains. “That helps simplify truck operation and maintenance for our customers.” AT
Today’s trucks incorporate more parts than past models.

Retreads
W
While they are not likely on the forefront of everyone’s mind, retreads have become an important part of a fleet’s tire program. They serve to drive down overall tire costs while maximizing tire life. “Retreading is an excellent way to save money and utilize the full life and value out of a casing,” says Ted Becker, vice president of marketing for Michelin North America, adding that delivering on fuel efficiency and mileage are central points that customers want from their retreads. “But not every retread is created equal,” Becker warns. “Through the tread design and rubber compound technology that Michelin uses, combined with our Michelin Retread Technologies (MRT) process, we deliver significant performance in both fuel efficiency and wear for our retread products.” Fleets also look for the same tread patterns on retreads that they use on their new tires, Becker points out. “Our customers find our new tires’ tread patterns in retreads, enabling them to enjoy high levels of performance, just like the new tire,” he says. “Some customers also need retread products for specific applications, from linehaul to regional or urban use.” Michelin launched its X One XDN2 Pre-Mold earlier in the year. According to Becker, the retread combines the fuel and weight savings of the X One wide single product with the mileage and traction of a traditional lug-based tread pattern. It also comes with the Michelin On Michelin guarantee, which guarantees 30% more mileage than competitors as well as a second X One trailer retread on a Michelin casing, Becker says. When it comes to tire retread innovation, “Goodyear has responded with best-in-class solutions to help fleets and owner-operators reduce their fuel costs and downtime,” says Mike Manges, communications manager-commercial tires. Goodyear recently introduced retreads for two of its newest wide-base truck tires, the G392 SSD and G394 SST. Both contain the company’s exclusive Fuel Max and DuraSeal Technologies. The G392 SSD drive and G394 SST trailer tires are both available in load range L in a 445/50R22.5 size.
