Rising rates?

C

Could freight rates for truckers increase 5 to 8% by year-end, with that rate spike occurring despite the continued sluggish economy? Rosalyn Wilson, senior business analyst for research firm Parsons and author of the annual State of Logistics Report, thinks so. During Wilson’s annual logistics presenRate increases tation last month in Washington, D.C., she noted that while trucking posted just a 1.6% appear on the rise in revenues for 2013—one of its weakest horizon despite revenue years in recent history—truck tonnage still jumped 6.1% last year. This is much slow growth higher than revenue figures would seem to indicate. She added, too, that truckload industry capacity decreased some 2.5% in 2013, largely due to a spike in motor carrier bankruptcies. From Wilson’s perspective, that means a capacity shortage is imminent. “The trucking industry is facing a severe problem, with demand increasing while capacity is declining,” she stressed. “The capacity loss is in real vehicles as well as lowered productivity of current assets. [Yet] the downward revision in first-quarter GDP is not a harbinger of things to come for the freight industry [as] many parts of the GDP calculation have the opposite effect on our industry. Given this situation, it is apparent that carriers should be able to raise rates significantly in 2014.” That would be welcome news for truckers, who have been angling to get and keep some serious rate increases for a while now. Natural gas on the road to growth

W

hile some applications, like refuse hauling and port drayage, have already moved to natural gas power for their trucks, longhaul operations, which are responsible for the majority of heavy-truck sales, have not moved much beyond testing and trials. However, predictions that long-haul fleets are now about to ramp up adoption of NG were voiced by a number of speakers during the first day of ACT Expo 2014, a conference and show focused on alternative clean transportation. So it was no surprise that a panel promising “a reality check” on HD NG trucks was standing room only. While 60% of all new refuse trucks sold in the U.S. last year carried NG engines, the long-haul segment is responsible for consuming some 25 billion gals. of fuel annually, according to Andrew Littlefair, president and CEO of NG provider Clean Energy Fuels. “That’s the opportunity [for NG], and I believe the tipping point has arrived,” he said. One reason has been the successful introduction of a 12L NG engine by Cummins Westport, experts on the panel said. “We’re hearing good reports from the field, and the trucks are being very well-accepted,” said Charles Cook, vocational marketing manager at Peterbilt Motors. Kenworth Trucks has four truckload carriers that have accumulated almost 3 million mi. on the new 12L NG engine, said Andy Douglas, national sales manager. Those fleets are seeing a 9 to 11% degradation in

4 American Trucker/July 2014

Demand for NG trucks may increase as infrastructure concerns subside. fuel consumption and a 1¢ to 2¢ per mile increase in maintenance costs, he noted, but that doesn’t factor in long-term savings that may accrue from not having to maintain diesel aftertreatment systems or the consumption of diesel emissions fluid. Some did experience performance problems related to cold weather with the new engines, “but hats off to Cummins Westport for going out and making that right,” said Frank Bio, director of sales development for alternative fuels at Volvo Trucks. As fleets accumulate more realworld data and experience with NG trucks in different applications, their comfort level with the technology is increasing, according to Roy Horton, powertrain marketing manager at Mack Trucks. And with more volume will come lower prices, further increasing market penetration, he pointed out. Asked if earlier forecasts that NG would account for 10% of HD truck sales by 2020 were too low, Douglas said that timeframe might be too conservative. “I think we could hit 10% in two to three years,” he said. —JIM MELE

trucking insights

Leaders communicate E

ver wonder what your credibility rating is at the office? To enhance your credibility, experts recommend following these three steps in your leadership process: First, admit when something’s gone wrong, e.g., a CSA problem, a truck breakdown or loss of an important shipper. As the leader of a company, it is your job to deal with problems as they occur. Involving employees and drivers by asking for reports and talking over possible solutions with them earns their trust. Second, while you’re working on the current problem, communicate to your employees that there’s a solution in the works. Emphasize the teamwork approach, a “we’re in this together, so let’s roll up our sleeves and fix it” stance. Let your employees know that you’re willing to listen to their ideas. Your employees keep the company running and keep your customers happy. Third, don’t ever say, “I give up.” That’s not what your staff or your truckers want to hear. They depend on you to keep a cheerful outlook, even if you feel like you’re on board the Titanic. Be honest with your staff. A good leader also says, “We can fix this. Let’s figure out how.” Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. CARB makes compliance easier

T

he California Air Resources Board (CARB) adopted amendments to its Truck and Bus Regulation that it said will lend “new flexible compliance options” to owners of diesel-powered fleets. CARB said the changes will “provide additional regulatory flexibility to small fleets...that have made substantial progress towards cleaner air.” Vehicles retrofitted this year will not have to be replaced until 2023. CARB said the amendments include: ❑ A longer phase-in period for

diesel PM requirements for trucks that operate exclusively in certain rural areas with cleaner air. ❑ Additional time and incentivefunding opportunities. ❑ A new compliance option for owners who cannot currently afford compliance. ❑ Expansion of the low-use exemption and the construction truck extension. ❑ Recognition of fleet owners who have already complied by providing additional “usable life” for retrofit trucks.

Cloud-based document app

S

canIQ has released a new cloud-based scanning application to make it easier for drivers to send and receive documents while on the road. The One-Touch solution can also connect to physical scanners to print high-quality scans. The solution provides a powerful backend console that allows dispatchers to track their fleet along with the ability to send paperwork and messages to each driver. Drivers simply load the document into the scanner and press the scan button on their Android smart device. The scanned file destination is preset by the office using the One-Touch console and can be sent in either PDF or TIFF format to multiple emails, fax or FTP servers. One-Touch has the ability to simultaneously email and fax documents. After the paperwork has been sent, the app resets to default and subsequent transmissions will only go to the assigned e-mail addresses. www.scaniq.net

Fuel economy tuner

B

ully Dog has released a new ECM tuner with four variations for Caterpillar, Cummins, Detroit and Paccar engines. The tuner can also read and erase trouble codes and adjust speed limiters, the company said. Users can choose between the Economy tune, Economy + Power or custom tuning. The Economy tune can help drivers achieve mileage gains of 6-12%, Bully Dog said. By using Economy + Power, fleets can increase horsepower and torque up to 15% while still maintaining fuel economy. The device’s display makes it easy to read, adjust the speed limiter, and perform vehicle diagnostics while on the road, the company added. www.bullydog.com

Laying blame

O

On Oct. 2, 2013, a three-car accident involving a church bus, an SUV and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 outside Knoxville, TN, tragically claimed the lives of eight people and injured 12. The media immediately reported that it was the result of a blown steer tire, so the tire and transportation industries braced for another potential public relations and/or regulatory nightmare. Speculation ran rampant as a few Best practices “experts” tried to place all of the blame on the tire or can’t prevent the bus driver and basically guessed what caused this accidents from tragedy. Fortunately, the Tenneshappening see Highway Patrol ignored the media reports and spent thousands of worker-hours to investigate the accident in order to understand how and why it happened. The investigation concluded that the bus had struck an object in the road within the 50 mi. prior to the accident. Trooper Randall Massengill described it as a “break and separate” type of tire failure. After the press conference, Massengill was also quoted as saying, “There is nothing that the driver of the bus or anyone else could have done prior to the accident to give a hint that something was wrong. You would not have seen anything amiss on the tire.” Tires are engineered to absorb most impacts without suffering any permanent damage and given the deteriorating condition of this nation’s roads and highways, it’s a good thing that they are incredibly durable. But there will be times when the impact is simply too much for the internal structure of the tire to handle. There is no way to determine when or where it will happen and in this instance, the investigation revealed that no one could

have predicted the “blunt force impact” would eventually lead to a failure. Ambulance-chasing attorneys and safety advocates are always looking for someone to blame. The Tennessee Highway Patrol should be commended for conducting a thorough investigation and making sure that only the facts were considered. “[The investigation] found no evidence of impairment on any drivers involved in the crash, no evidence that the drivers were distracted, and no evidence that the bus was not wellmaintained,” Col. Tracy Trott said. “This was a tragic event that claimed the lives of eight individuals by no fault of any one person.” Benjamin Franklin is credited as being the first person to say that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If that philosophy is applied to tires, it is accurate in most cases. The condition of every tire on the vehicle must be visually inspected prior to each day’s use, and the inflation pressure must be checked so it can be adjusted if necessary. When drivers and maintenance personnel practice an ounce of prevention on a daily basis, everyone on the highway reaps the benefits. However, there will be times when lightning strikes like it did in October 2013. The unpredictable nature of road conditions and omnipresence of debris and hazards will occasionally claim the lives of tires and, unfortunately, the people who rely on them. My prayers and condolences go out to the families of the eight people who lost their lives and the 12 who were injured. But as a 32-year veteran of the tire business, I have to admit that I was relieved to hear that my industry was not to blame. This time. AT

business of trucking

Plugging the drain

A

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

s the owner of a business, you need to regularly check daily revenue and expense numbers. But in doing so, are you missing something in the big picture that could spell the end of your business? To ensure you are not slowly bleeding cash, conduct a periodic line-item cost analysis and review your hauling rate range to ensure it is sufficient enough to meet your capitalization goals. Re-evaluate what you’re hauling and where you’re transporting it. Take advantage of slow times to reflect on what will move your

16 American Trucker/July 2014

carrier into a well-planned future. In short, it’s time to review your financials. Every carrier, regardless of size, should do a line-item cost analysis at least once a year. If, at any point in the year, you notice you are paying out more than you take in, then you need to conduct an analysis. Don’t wait for an annual review if this is happening; by then it may be too late to trim expenses. What’s a line-item cost analysis? It’s the evaluation of every cost related to operating your business. It’s making a determination of each item or service required to do business and whether it contributes pos-

itively or negatively to the operation. Before cutting expenses, evaluate the overall impact eliminations or reductions will have on the entire operation. Cutting costs haphazardly can be more destructive than doing nothing at all. This causes other costs to inflate, thus increasing your company’s costs overall. Evaluate the net effect of any cut or reduction across your entire business; just because it decreases a cost doesn’t mean it’ll increase profitability. As a drastic example, if a trucking company were to eliminate all fuel costs, it would have gotten rid of one of its highest expenses, but it also would have made it impossible to service its shippers as the trucks

Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings

business of trucking

sat parked. You must choose wisely as to where the cost ax falls. Determine what happens if you eliminate an expense altogether. Ask yourself these questions: 1. How necessary is the item, service or person? 2. What would happen if the item, service or person was eliminated? 3. Would it lower or improve customer service? 4. How would this affect overall efficiency? 5. Would something or someone else have to fill the void left by eliminating this expense? 6. Would eliminating the expense cause other costs to increase or decrease? If so, by how much? 8. What is the net cost increase or savings after the elimination? By studying the entire picture of what happens when you cut costs, you begin to see the effect of your actions. You must spend money to make money, but it’s how wisely you invest those dollars that determines your level of success. Costs don’t exist in a void, so for every expense cut, there’s a cost or time requirement needed to fill the void. If in eliminating the expense, your analysis indicates an increase in the company’s break-even point, then the next evaluation should look at whether reducing the expense provides the necessary cost savings. It doesn’t seem logical, but in our previous example, finding ways to reduce fuel spend (i.e., by consolidating loads or smarter fuel purchasing) may turn a losing freight lane into a profitable one. Following are questions you need to ask to determine what happens if you reduce the expense instead of cutting it: 1. At what level is the item, service

or person necessary? 2. What happens if the cost of the item, service or person is reduced? 3. Would it lower or improve customer service? 4. How would this affect overall efficiency? 5. Would something or someone else have to fill the void left by the cost reduction? 6. Would the cost reduction cause other costs to increase or decrease? If so, by how much?

A financial analysis can identify solutions to revenue/cost discrepancies I’ve found that after doing repeated line-item cost analysis, most large expenses, if cut, cause the biggest increase in other costs, thus negating any real savings. It’s usually the reduction or elimination of the small costs that actually add up to the greatest net savings. Don’t misunderstand me; controlling costs in all areas is vitally important. But constantly checking to see if there’s a money drip coming from your cash flow faucet is one way to be sure your hard-earned cash isn’t going down the drain. And look at the entire freight lane revenue to determine profitability. While it’s extremely important for

each truck to meet its break-even point on each load, it may not create a profit on each leg of a freight lane. Evaluate whether the truck is showing a consistent profit at the end of each month, quarter, and year’s end. Here are several steps to do that: 1. Know your break-even point on each piece of equipment. 2. Know your capitalization (amount of money in reserve) requirement to grow your company and divide that need between all your operating equipment. 3. Develop a rate range based on the combination of those figures for each piece of equipment. 4. Measure what you’re currently receiving from each customer and each lane in which you operate over a period of a week, a month, and a quarter. 5. Is the revenue of the customer and lane exceeding your break-even point for the equipment involved? 6. Is the amount meeting your projected capitalization requirements? When? Weekly, monthly, or quarterly? If not, then in order to increase revenue, renegotiate your contract with the shipper to meet revenue needs, or find other loads to mix into the lanes in which this equipment travels. 7. Are you able to increase revenue? If not, then you must decide whether or not you will retain the lane/shipper. Each truck is essentially its own profit or loss center. Be sure to review your financials and prosper. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. Join Brady in the Trucking Business Community at www.truckersu.com.

MOVING & STORAGE

Dependable service Reliable equipment is at the heart of customer service for 1-800-PACK-RAT

W

“We’re in the logistics business, and the biggest component of logistics in our operation is a reliable fleet,” says Kevin Barbour, senior vice president-operations at 1-800-PACKRAT. “We set schedules for equipment to meet customer moving and storage needs weeks in advance, so uptime is everything.” Offering a unique brand of moving and storage services, the Wake Forest, NC-based company provides residential and commercial customers with 16x8-, 12x8- and 8x8-ft. moving and storage containers. The company serves more than 70 markets in the U.S. and Canada with 30,000 containers, which are moved by almost 200 medium-duty trucks. Several years ago, 1-800-PACKRAT began standardizing on Kenworth T370 models, which are supplied through MHC KenworthWilmington in North Carolina. Today, the company operates 115 T370s and has 30 more on order. The 230-in. wheelbase trucks are equipped with proprietary lift sys-

tems designed to raise containers straight up and place them squarely on the truck chassis, eliminating shifting of contents. Some trucks in the fleet pull trailers with containers.

SETTING A STANDARD The decision to standardize on the Kenworths was based on the experience of one of the franchises in the 1-800-PACK-RAT system. “That location was experiencing better reliability and fuel economy,” Barbour says. “We need reliable trucks to provide dependable service, and the T370s with 280-hp. Paccar PX-7 engines and Allison automatic 5-speed transmissions had been getting 2 mpg better fuel economy than other truck makes and models. When you consider that our trucks drive about 60,000 mi. annually, going from 6 to 8 mpg means an extra $10,000 a year in fuel savings per unit.” A well-maintained fleet is just as critical for the service-oriented, asset-based operation at 1-800-PACKRAT, explains Barbour. “We have a

Go to

maintenance contract with Penske Truck Leasing to handle all of our service needs,” he relates. “Effective maintenance is an essential part of ensuring customer service. Because our equipment is unique, if a truck breaks down, we can’t simply use a loaner or rent a replacement. “Any unplanned downtime can cause problems to snowball throughout our entire system, which jeopardizes our ability to live up to our 100% satisfaction guarantee,” adds Barbour. He notes that effective maintenance is important for maintaining favorable CSA scores. “CSA has huge fleet management and compliance requirements, including appeals, which can be very time-consuming. The enhanced enforcement activity under CSA has had such an impact on our operation that ensuring compliance has become a large initiative for us,” Barbour explains. “We actually have one manager who spends most of his time following up on roadside inspections, which we have found to be somewhat subjective.” The idea behind 1-800-PACKRAT was conceived in 2001 when a North Carolina entrepreneur sketched out an all-steel weatherproof portable storage container that was jokingly referred to as a “Pack Rat” because of its ability to store everything. Three initial locations opened in the state in 2003, and beginning in 2005 under new leadership, the company expanded within two years to include 50 facilities. Today, it operates from 63 locations. “1-800-PACK-RAT continues to expand,” Barbour says. “We plan to begin serving new markets this year, next year, and into the foreseeable future. As a result, we’ll be adding to the fleet. In the moving and storage business, trucks aren’t just the backbone of logistics; they also project our mantra of providing excellent and reliable service.” AT

here’s probably no greater conundrum for a fleet of any size these days than deciding whether to replace or refurbish equipment—especially as the sticker prices for new trucks and trailers continue to climb. For example, global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan estimated that in 2013 the upfront cost for new equipment climbed 2.7% over 2012, with the price of a new trailer climbing to between $30,000 and $50,000 depending on whether it’s a flatbed, dry van or refrigerated model. Craig Bennett, senior vice president-sales & marketing for Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co., believes that the higher initial cost of trailers is leading many trucking operators to try and lengthen ownership cycles. “The trend a few years ago was towards shorter lifecycles; for example, moving from a seven- to eightyear ownership period for refrigerated units down to five or six years,” explains Bennett. “Now we’re going back the other way towards eightyear and even in some cases 10-year ownership periods. That’s why we’re working to increase the durability of our trailers and extend warranty coverage as well.”

THE NEW REALITY

Bennett adds that he expects the overall trailer market in North America to range between 240,000 and 250,000 units this year, up only a percentage point or two over 2013’s numbers. “And 2013 was down a little from 2012,” he points out. “We probably are not going to get back to the 270,000-unit peak we last experienced in 2007.” Trailer orders of late back up Bennett’s forecast. According to data tracked by ACT Research, manufacturers booked 22,300 net orders in May. “May net orders rose 52% year over year,” notes Frank Maly,

ACT’s director of commercial vehicle transportation analysis and research. “Backlog, build, inventory and shipments were all off from April, but the changes were minimal, all less than 1% on a month over month basis. This stability provides a solid foundation for the industry as we move into the summer and fall build season.” Maly adds that trailer production rates should remain relatively unchanged over the next few months, and the order board should continue to support the industry to the next order season this coming fall. The spike in trailer orders this year doesn’t surprise Jeff Weber, vice president-sales & marketing for Ervin Equipment, as many factors seem to be aligning in favor of replacement versus refurbishment. “It’s the age-old question for fleet owners: When is it time to trade-in older equipment? That process is subjective and, for the most part, dependent on the distance and frequency of travel, type of materials hauled, and current total cost of ownership,” he explains. “Your bottom line should be the determining factor of whether you upgrade a trailer.” Weber’s 10-plus years of working on the front lines of trailer sales tell him that the older equipment gets, the more likely it is that mainte-

nance costs will increase. “It’s a fact of life and it’s the reason fleet managers should always have not just a ballpark idea of where a trailer’s residual value sits, but a very specific system for tracking it,” he says. “This way, when maintenance costs begin to climb, they’ll know when they’re approaching their breaking point.” Weber adds that most equipment owners and fleet managers have at least a rough estimate of what they spend per year on key items, such as tires and brakes. However, many fall short when it comes to drilling down to the cost of more unique maintenance items, such as replacing doors or the interior lining of a dry van trailer.

TIME TO TRADE

“When you’re at the crossroads, there’s a relatively easy equation to keep in mind,” he points out. “Say the residual value of the trailer is at or near $6,000. If it’s costing $1,500 to $2,000 per year to maintain because of its age, it’s a good time to evaluate what you could get if you were to upgrade. As a general rule of thumb, on equipment more than 10 years old, if repair bills or maintenance expenses exceed 30% to 40% of the trailer’s value, it’s time to trade it in.” Rodney Ehrlich, senior vice president and chief technology officer for Wabash National Trailers, adds that fleets can also gain greater efficiencies by replacing older trailers with new units, especially when it comes to dry van models. “New 53-ft. dry van models are 600 to 700 lbs. lighter on average compared to 10 years ago. And in some cases, they are 1,500 lbs. lighter due to new designs,” he says. “Today, most of the dry van market has shifted away from heavier sheet-and-post designs to composite models, which is also allowing fleets to extend lifecycles from eight to 10 years out to 13, 14, and even 15 years.”

cover story Yet Rob Fortney, dealer sales director for Great Dane Trailers, cautions fleets and individual equipment owners alike that proper spec’ing is the most critical factor in determining whether trailers can last upwards of 15 years in service while keeping maintenance costs in line. “Whether buying new or refurbishing an existing trailer, making sure the trailer has the correct specifications for your particular operation is essential,” he stressed. “More than any other factor this will determine if the trailer will prove satisfactory now and in the future.” Fortney also notes that in some industries with heavy load requirements, such as for automotive parts and paper, shippers often require the trailer to be below a certain age point in order to protect against accidents and cargo damage due to trailer failure. “In those cases, it’s often more prudent to replace rather than refurbish an older trailer,” he says. Ervin’s Weber points out, too, that not only are newer trailer models lighter, the technology within them— specifically the lighting systems and suspension—has improved so much over the past 10 to 15 years that a new trailer often requires very little maintenance for the first 36 months. “Further, a trailer that is 10 or

22 American Trucker/July 2014

Fleets expect trailers to achieve long life, which makes regular maintenance and inspection a priority. more years old might no longer suit industry specs,” he stresses. “For example, if the trend is hauling freight that is continuously getting heavier, an older trailer might not be built to handle it. In that case, it’s best to get the best residual value out of your older trailer today and spec a new trailer built for what your business currently requires.”

THE CASE FOR REFURBISHING Still, an equipment owner staring down a $50,000 price tag for a new trailer unit might well consider refurbishing an older model to gain a few more years of use. Great Dane’s

Fortney says several components will play key roles in the refurbishment decision: ❑ Condition and operation of the doors ❑ Floor system, including the condition of the top floor ❑ Condition and structural integrity of the crossmembers ❑ Connection points between the crossmembers and the bottom trailer rail, including inspecting for corrosion of the rail, the crossmember clip and fastener ❑ Suspension and undercarriage including the support gear ❑ Wheel ends and tire and wheel condition ❑ Electrical, lighting and air system Some different calculations are required when it comes to specific types of trailers such as refrigerated units and flatbeds, he says. “Refurbishing older refrigerated trailers is typically more complicated and costly, so a decision to refurbish reefer units requires careful cost/ benefit analysis,” Fortney stresses. “Even if the trailer can be made to look like new, older refrigerated trailers typically lose a considerable amount of thermal integrity as they age and the foam insulation degrades. Older reefers are also subject to air leaks, allowing the cooled air

cover story to escape.” He adds that the emissions restrictions placed on older refrigeration power units by the California Air Resources Board need to be considered as well.

WEIGHT GAIN “Older refrigerated trailers also absorb moisture over time and can gain as much as 2,000 to 3,000 lbs. over a 10-year period,” Fortney points out. “The last 10 years have seen tremendous advancements in refrigerated interior linings becoming much stronger and more durable, better in appearance, and most important, lighter in weight. Refrigeration units from both Carrier and Thermo King have also become more efficient in their ability to maintain temperature as well as [improve] fuel economy.” When it comes to flatbed trailers, he explains that refurbishing would likely include careful inspection for rust and corrosion and the general integrity of the beams and crossmembers, as well as repainting of the steel surfaces and repair or replacement of aluminum parts. “Evaluation of the floor, whether it be all wood or aluminum with wood nailing strips, would be prudent as well,” Fortney says. Back on the dry van model front, depending on historical maintenance of the equipment and the fleet’s desire to continue regular preventive maintenance, swing doors are generally easy and inexpensive to replace. “New doors can solve a lot of water leak issues with older trailers,” says Fortney. “This is also a good time to refurbish and repaint the rear frame and bumper. A general inspection of the suspension system, springs, bushings, alignment settings, etc., is also a good idea. Wheel end maintenance or replacement including the hub, brake drum, wheel seals, bearings and hub cap are a

The addition of aerodynamic devices such as skirts can bring fuel savings to older trailer models. wise investment.” While the wheel end is off, equipment owners might as well replace the brake shoes while they are at it. “Wheels should also be inspected for cracks, damage or corrosion, with a new set of tires or [retreads] installed as well,” he notes.

BETTER LIGHTING Fortney also feels equipment owners should think about upgrading to LED or light emitting diode lighting systems as they engage in trailer refurbishment. “LED replacement lighting has gone down in price in the last several years and could be a reasonable replacement for lower maintenance cost. Also, bet-

ter visibility [of] LEDs can enhance safety,” he says. Wabash’s Ehrlich stresses, too, that LED lighting offers several advantages over older-style incandescent bulbs, primarily because LED electrical power systems aren’t as vulnerable to corrosion. “One of the things equipment owners need to understand is that we’ve actually removed many maintenance items from trailer designs over the last decade—not just reduced maintenance costs, mind you, but eliminated entire maintenance

requirements,” he stresses. “That really changes the cost of ownership footprint for trailer owners when looking at whether to buy new units or refurbish older ones.”

CASE FOR BUYING NEW Great Dane’s Fortney echoes that view. “New trailers include the latest in technology in terms of lighter weight structures and components, aerodynamic enhancements, cargo restraint and corrosion resistance,” he explains. “They are less likely to need repairs than used trailers, which typically take the trailer out of productive service. Plus, they are prettier and have that new trailer smell. You can’t beat that combination.” Yet a solid preventive maintenance (PM) program is a must for trailers, just as it is for the tractors that pull them, says Fortney. Good PM practices help ensure that equipment owners will maximize the value they get out of their trailer assets regardless of their make, model and specs, he emphasizes. “A general inspection of the equipment every 60 days, depending on usage, is the key to reduced trailer downtime, cargo damage, etc.,” Fortney says. “Inspect for damage that could cause problems related to water leaks, cargo damage and structural integrity. Inspect the roof, the nose rail, the lining material, the scuff band, the rear door seals and hardware.” He adds that PM attention needs to be paid to tire condition and tire air pressure, wheel condition, wheel ends, brake condition (both shoe and drum), and brake adjustment. Attention to the condition and operation of the air system including glad hands and seals, brake valves, antilock braking system, brake chambers, and slacks and cams is also crucial. “Inspect and ensure all the lights are properly located and secure. Inspect and repair as necessary the

proper repairs ensure not only the structural integrity of the trailer but are also much less likely to leak than a silicone patch.” AT

Fuel economy and trailers

M

aking trailers more fuel-efficient is not an easy task due to their largely non-aerodynamic shape and because they don’t burn fuel “directly” the way an over-the-road tractor does. Still, more attention is being paid to the impact trailers have on fuel economy. Design and regulatory efforts are underway to develop trailers that are more “fuel-burn friendly.” “While the trailer doesn’t actually burn any fuel—refrigerated trailers excluded—it does have a huge impact on the amount of fuel the connected tractor burns,”notes Rob Fortney, dealer sales director for Great Dane Trailers. Numerous aerodynamic accessories can be added to new and old trailers, he points out, with such devices including aerodynamic side skirts, trailer tails, under-tray systems, nose cone or gap reducing front wall devices and wheel fillers. “When the California Air Resources Board trailer fuel-efficiency requirement was enacted, many fleets and owner-operators grumbled about the cost plus the potential impact on durability, trailer appearance, etc.,”he says. “Over the last several years, though, the fuel-saving benefits of these devices have proven to be durable and, most importantly, effective in reducing tractor fuel consumption. A combination of devices returned as much as 10% fuel savings to some fleets,” Fortney notes. Jeff Weber, vice president-sales & marketing for Ervin Equipment, stresses that not much more can be done in the trailer industry to increase fuel efficiency. “We’ve installed aerodynamic devices and automatic tire inflation systems, and manufacturers are making the lightest trailers they’ve ever made. Aside from a driver’s habits, there aren’t a lot more changes from the trailer side that will help boost fuel efficiency,” he points out. “If you are weight-conscious and hauling an older, heavier trailer, buying a new trailer is a good fuel-economy solution as well.”

Rolling costs

MANAGER: Kenny Carpenter TITLE: Fleet maintenance manager FLEET: RWI Transportation, Wilder, KY OPERATION: Produce carrier with 280 company-owned refrigerated trailers pulled by 250 owner-operators

T

ires for both trucks and trailers remain one of the top three cost centers for any fleet, be it an overthe-road carrier or vocational operation. Yet controlling tire costs can be a ticklish business, as Kenny Carpenter can tell you. So many variPROBLEM ables—from tire design to operating conditions—affect tread depth and wear patterns and ultimately impact the expected longevity of a tire. Thus, the key to finding the right tires for the right operation boils down to getting data—and lots of it. Carpenter joined RWI Transportation two years ago after a nearly 20-year career spent in trucking’s mainte-

C

nance trenches. He started out in the 1990s with Baylor Trucking as a trailer mechanic, then worked his way up to diesel technician. Along the way, there was a stop as shop foreman at a local Freightliner dealer before joining RWI as fleet maintenance manager. Originally, RWI employed its own in-house tire tracking system that, while somewhat effective, did not track several key metrics, he said. “[We knew] what tires were put on our trailers and what happened to those tires, but we didn’t have a way to track any of that,” Carpenter notes. “We wanted to have all of that information at our fingertips.”

arpenter settled on the Tire Trac online management program offered by Goodyear Tire & Rubber through its Goodyear-FleetHQ division. The system provides real-time information and helps RWI track long-term tire trends. Tire SOLUTION Trac data is gathered through fleet surveys conducted by technicians at Goodyear commercial tire dealerships or Goodyear Commercial Tire & Service Centers. They perform on-site tire inspections, measuring tire inflation levels, tread depth and other aspects of a tire’s condition. That information is used to create customized reports. Carpenter felt the Tire Trac system would be ideal for RWI because the carrier doesn’t have its own network of maintenance shops. This made it difficult for him to keep tabs on the company’s trailers themselves, much less its tires. With access to Tire Trac data, he avoids costly road service calls due to tire failures because he can now make proactive decisions on when to replace tires. “A trailer will leave out of here and go out to one of our terminals in Dallas or Bloomington, CA, and I won’t see it for six months,” he explains. “In that time period, maybe

two or even three tires might get replaced depending on what’s happened on the road. In the past, I wouldn’t know the reason why it got replaced or even the type or brand of replacement tire.” Now, Gem City Tire, a local Goodyear commercial tire dealership, sends a technician to RWI’s Wilder hub twice a week to check inflation pressure, tread depth and other things. From there, information is downloaded and customized reports are created. The upshot of the program, he said, is that RWI has saved some $40,000 in tire-related expenses over the last 18 months in addition to realizing a $15,000 reduction in road service costs over that time period. “Right off the bat, we cut down our road calls by about maybe one-quarter or one-third simply because we were getting better information about the condition of our trailer tires and making those frequent fleet checks at our locations,” Carpenter explains. “We also got a better look at how certain tire types held up over time. For example, we found one type provided us with 15,000 more miles per 32nd of tread depth—and that, of course, influenced what types of trailer tires we use.” —SEAN KILCARR

A

mong the multiple tiers of emissions standards issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it’s the comprehensive Tier 4 emissions standards that have impacted the development of refrigeration units the most and led to the integration of engine and fuel controls. Also affecting refrigeration unit design is the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) for In-Use Diesel-Fueled Transport Refrigeration Units and TRU Generator Sets, and Facilities Where TRUs Operate. The TRU ATCM mandates a phased approach to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions from in-use TRU engines that operate in California. The CARB In-Use Performance Standards set requirements by horsepower range, which can be achieved by using an engine that meets the required engine certification value, retrofitting the engine with the required level of verified diesel emissions controls, or using an alternative technology. As a result of these environmental legislative efforts, manufacturers are now producing new refrigeration unit technologies. Those designs also help lower costs for users by cutting fuel consumption and maintenance requirements. Designed for stationary cold-storage applications, Carrier Transicold’s new engineless Vector 8100 all-electric trailer refrigeration unit operates on electric standby only. The 8100 unit is designed especially for supermarkets, produce warehouses, food distribution centers, and other businesses that use refrigerated trailers for on-site cold storage. The 8100 joins Carrier’s Vector product line, which also includes 8500 single-temperature and 8600MT multi-temperature models designed for over-the-road transport and which are capable of being plugged into an electric power source. Both models are diesel-electric hybrids and both have a diesel engine that drives an electric generator, which provides power for the refrigeration system when on the highway. The Vector 8500 and 8600MT models are in compliance with EPA Tier 4 standards for engines rated less than 25 hp. For fleets operating in California, the platform’s standard electric standby capability provides an in-use compliance option that meets CARB requirements.

The Vector platform features the company’s E-Drive all-electric refrigeration technology. The latest Vector models use a fully sealed electric scroll compressor that has 70% fewer moving parts and is 200 lbs. lighter than a reciprocating compressor, the company notes. The standard Vector 8100 configuration requires a Thermo King’s Precedent S-700 460-volt power supply, but the unit may also be equipped with Carrier Transicold’s optional Flex Power dual voltage option, which enables compatibility with 208- to 230-volt sources. Earlier this year, Thermo King launched the newest model in its Precedent Series. The S-700 is a deep-frozen refrigeration unit with shorepower capabilities and is designed to be fully compliant with EPA Tier 4 standards without the addition of diesel particulate filters or engine emissions systems. The greater-than-25-hp. model is compliant with CARB Ultra-Low-Emission Transport Refrigeration Unit In-Use Performance Standards. Also built on the Precedent platform from Thermo King is the S-600 model, a single-temperature unit that features two-speed evaporator operation to enhance airflow while hauling perishable goods. Rounding out the line is the C-600, a less-than-25-hp. single-temperature model. The company notes the S-600 and S-700 units offer trade cycle flexibility due to their longer useful engine life. Thermo King’s SmartPower electric standby option is available on all Precedent models. This allows the units to operate on electric power in addition to being powered by the standard diesel engine. During SmartPower operation, power to the unit is supplied by an electric motor connected to a high voltage power source. Precedent models from Thermo King utilize the manufacturer’s Diesel Direct Electric (DDE) architecture that directly couples a compressor to a diesel engine and employs electrically driven fans and other operating components.
