Recently, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers conducted a survey of over 200 researchers, academicians, practitioners, university students, and government agencies involved in the development of “autonomous vehicles” to get a sense of how such technology will impact car and truck Autonomous designs. Conducted during the group’s Intelvehicles face ligent Vehicle Symposium held in Deara tough road born, MI, from June 8-11, a majority of those surveyed believe that rearview mirto acceptance rors, horns, and emergency brakes will be “removed” by 2030. And steering wheels and gas/brake pedals will follow by 2035 since, of course, they won’t be needed in vehicles operated without the input of human drivers. Creating digital maps of the road is essential for allowing autonomous vehicles to travel safely. When asked to predict how long it will be before a complete digital map of the world will exist, nearly three-quarters (74%) of respondents indicated these maps will be available within the next 15 years. Still … no steering wheel? I don’t know if I like that idea at all, much less the removal of the brake pedal. We’ll see how the motoring public feels about such things as autonomous vehicle technology continues to develop. AT

Easy steps to keep tire costs in line
C
ontrolling truck-tire costs boils down to figuring out how not to spend the big bucks it takes to buy new tires and retreads before replacing those assets is absolutely necessary, according to Al Cohn, director of new market development & engineering support for Pressure Systems International (P.S.I.), the manufacturer of the Meritor Tire Inflation System by P.S.I. “The price of tires, which shot up in 2011, has now come down due to the price of natural rubber dropping to 2009 levels,” Cohn said in his keynote address at a recent fleet seminar held in San Antonio by P.S.I. Given the high-dollar value of both new tires and retreads, Cohn said fleets need to ensure their tiremaintenance program is doing all it can to provide both long tread and casing life. “Even though tire prices were stable in 2012 and 2013 and are looking very good so far for 2014,” Cohn pointed out, “a fleet spec’ing new tires on all positions on a typical 18-wheeler will currently spend $7,000 to $9,000.” Given that, Cohn contended that “fleets should want to work jointly with their tire suppliers and dealers to optimize their tire programs to reduce costs.” Cohn offered these thoughts on “what works as components of a serious tire-management program”: T Choose the best make/model of tire for the application and then perform ongoing evaluation on a

There are several steps fleets can take to extend the life of their tires and reduce tire-related expenses. representative sample size. T Target tread-depth removal points to protect the integrity of the tire casing for retreadability. T Optimize the air-pressure spec for each wheel position based on the worst-case load scenario it will face. T Rotate steer tires back to drive axles; rotate drives to trailer positions. T Determine the target for how many retreads per casing should be attained. T Standardize on how often tires should be inspected for tread depth and wear patterns as well as inflation compliance. “Fleets should also not overlook how key it is to educate both drivers and mechanics about tire-related issues,” Cohn added. Cohn noted that, in his view, “one of the biggest mistakes fleets make is to not make tire-related training an ongoing program. Helping a fleet out with that,” he added, “is a great opportunity for a tire maker or dealer to provide a value-added service to their customers.”

Getting back your life B
ritish naval historian C. Northcote Parkinson once said, “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.” If you find that quote painfully true when managing your small fleet, then here are two ideas for you: T Carefully screen all applicants before hiring them. Get the right people in place and then entrust them with tasks and responsibilities to successfully do their job. Your job is to manage and lead your fleet to greater prosperity. You’re in the transportation industry for the long haul, but you’re not going to make it if you insist on doing everything yourself. T Delegate. When you don’t delegate, you run the risk of ending up with too much work, not enough time, and lots of unnecessary stress. There’s no reason you should be racing from the dispatcher’s desk, to the file room, to the yard, to the repair bay, and back again. In case of an emergency, your drivers should first contact the dispatcher. If it’s after hours, then the office manager or safety director should be contacted. In the event of a tire blowout, then you shouldn’t be contacted unless the truck is rolled or otherwise disabled. You can’t do everything so decide what you must do yourself and what you can delegate to others. Set up a chain of command for your fleet. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Regulatory squeeze
W
When you think about the truck tire manufacturing process, the component most often thought of comes from small farms in Southeast Asia. Natural rubber is well known to everyone in the trucking business after supply issues caused the price to skyrocket from $1.48/lb. in July 2010 to a record high of $2.80/lb. in February 2011. This led to an unprecedented flurry of price increases as manufacturers attempted Proposed regs to offset rising raw material costs. With prices at may hike prices around $1/lb. and a projected global surplus for of crucial tire the next couple of years, it appears that the natural material rubber crisis is officially in the past. But a new butterfly is poised to flap its wings in Brazil and set off a tornado in Texas. Carbon black is a key raw material in tire manufacturing, and it accounts for about 30% of the physical weight, or about the same as natural rubber. It’s an important filler material that adds strength to the rubber, provides resistance to abrasion, and results in protection against ultraviolet light from the sun. While climate factors were largely responsible for the spike in raw material costs a few years ago, the EPA could play the villain if the industry experiences another round of price increases. At the recent Clemson University Global Tire Industry Conference, Gregory King, vice president of sales and marketing for Sid Richardson Carbon & Energy Co., warned attendees about a potential shortage of carbon black for the U.S. starting in 2016. He based his projection on current expansion plans from the tire companies and demand estimates made by the
Notch Consulting Group. But the real reason behind the domestic shortage will probably result from EPA efforts to control sulfur-oxide and nitrogen-oxide emissions from carbon black manufacturers. With increased production costs due to stricter emissions standards, the door will be wide open for China to expand into the North American carbon black market. Even though I have limited knowledge of the carbon black production process, I have deduced that it is not environmentally friendly. Mr. King stated that wet scrubbers are necessary to control the sulfuroxide emissions, and his company is unsure if it can get enough water in its West Texas plants. It is looking at other options, but the bottom line is that it will cost more to produce carbon black under the pending EPA guidelines. And while the anticipated price advantages from offshore producers in China, India and Russia will put even more stress on domestic manufacturers, it’s important to note that the emissions problems here in the states are also present on other continents. The lax environmental restrictions overseas are not solving the global issues of sulfur-oxide emissions. Domestic tire companies have made incredible advances to lessen the impact of a not-so-environmentally-friendly manufacturing process. But the dependence on raw materials like natural rubber and carbon black creates a delicate balance that can lead to price spikes when one or more factors are out of whack. It’s another prime example of chaos theory, where the smallest change in the initial conditions can have a major impact on the entire system. AT

business of trucking
Changing on the fly BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR
S
ince most businesses, especially trucking, are not “static” operations, i.e., lacking in activity, change, movement, or progress, it’s very important to go over your business plan regularly, analyze it, and make adjustments to reach your ultimate business objectives. You should review your business plan when there’s a major change in your business environment. There are certain events that occur in the life of any business that require a change of course if you wish to keep your operation running smoothly and profitably. In trucking, the first one that

comes to mind concerns the ever-changing regulations coming down from federal and state governments. These include the
Constantly reviewing and adjusting your business plan keeps you on a path to profitability latest changes to the hours-of-service (HOS) rules and the newest mandate from the California Air Resources Board you must meet if you want to haul freight within California. Business changes may
also occur if a bigger market share competitor enters your freight hauling segment; a major customer changes the way they ship or adds a new product line; or a large upturn or downturn ripples through the economy. If any of these or other events happen, you need to look at the business plan. Depending on the severity and/or scope of any change, a slight adjustment to your current plan may be required, or it may demand a full revamping of what you do, what you haul, and with whom you do business. Review the business plan when there is a change within your business, for example, a new partner

the economy that caused rates to decrease? Did a shipper or broker lower the rates they are willing to pay because a competitor is trying to gain market share by lowering his rates? Even if there are no immediate circumstances that warrant a
USING AVAILABLE TOOLS All of these internal events require a business plan review. One mistake many business owners make is to spend the time assembling a business plan at the very beginning, use it to acquire funding, then toss it in an obscure file and never look at it again. They’re setting aside one of the greatest tools they have for keeping their business vibrant, up-to-date and profitable. Another important time to review your business plan is when there has been an increase in costs. Why have the costs increased? Has a vendor raised prices? Have your business procedures changed in a way that resources are not being used as efficiently? Perhaps there has been a significant change in fuel costs due to increased violence in the Middle East, severe weather, or an industrial accident? Were there unexpected and costly repairs on a piece of equipment? What about newly acquired costs that didn’t exist before? All of these types of events should trigger a business plan review to determine better ways to deal with the increased costs. If decreased revenue is hurting your profit margin, start with a review of the business plan and look for possible causes. Are there too many driver HOS violations causing shippers to lower what they pay? Was there a change in

Subtle changes to the business environment or shipper/broker feedback may prompt you to make some adjustments. If you review your business plan regularly, you should be able to keep it current and stay ahead of the market, your competitors and the regulators.
FORWARD PLANNING Creating and maintaining an effective business plan takes a lot of work, but if you consistently invest the time in doing so, it will be a valuable tool in keeping your business on track. Following are some ways to make the process of reviewing your business plan less time-consuming:
1. Maintain a vendor price log of what you pay for different products and services over the course of each year. With each invoice you receive, log what’s owed, the date and any price change. 2. Maintain a repair and maintenance file on each piece of equipment you own. Log the date, vehicle mileage or hours of each maintenance event, the cost, and the vendor who provided the service. Don’t forget tires. 3. Maintain a weekly fuel log. Include the price per gallon of the fuel used by your trucks, total gallons purchased, total cost paid for fuel, and average cost per gallon for your fleet. 4. Maintain a weekly load history log. List brokers/shippers, type of freight, distance traveled, deadhead miles (if any), number of days required to pick up and deliver, and total revenue received on each load. 5. Maintain a file of industry and business articles and white papers pertaining directly to your hauling segment. Include economic forecasts, technology trends, regulatory changes and events, and other events occurring in the industries of your shipping customers. These logs and files will become the research you need when evaluating your business plan. By reviewing these logs and files monthly, you’ll spot trends and changes you may have otherwise missed. All of these make that business plan update much smoother and far more useful in driving your trucking business to greater profitability. WHOLESALE DELIVERY
A path forward Consistent routes, smart specs keep refrigerated carrier on the move
M
Milwaukee-based Midwest Refrigerated Services (MRS) provides frozen and refrigerated logistics and distribution services with a fleet of 75 trucks (20 company-owned tractors and 55 dedicated owner-operators). “We are literally the start and finish of the food supply chain,” says Nick Schumacher, transportation operations manager. “As the food producers, distributors and their customers who rely on our service address new food safety regulations, they look to us to find new and better ways to transport their products and to ensure the integrity of their loads.” MRS provides less-than-truckload consolidation at multiple sites with freezer and cooler storage, distribution, and cross-dock operations. Its customers include food processors and manufacturers, retail grocery distribution centers, and food service distribution companies. After making multi-stop runs across the lower 48 states, MRS trucks haul full truckloads to company facilities for consolidation. “The steady 52 weeks per year of

freight and predictable nature of our lanes and delivery patterns are attractive to many drivers,” says Jim Koeble, the company’s vice president of transportation. “Finding good drivers is still a challenge, however, because we’re more than a trucking company. We serve as a third-party logistics service provider for shippers, so our freight consolidation programs require drivers to be more involved.”
FINDING QUALITY DRIVERS One of the challenges, according to Schumacher, is to recruit good drivers. “With the depletion of the driver pool, everyone in the industry is competing for the same prize by recruiting drivers from their current places of employment,” he says. “While our turnover is...at about 15% annually, it’s most often the newest drivers who leave. Drivers who work at MRS for a year are likely to stay for 20 years, but how do we get new drivers to stay when everyone is hiring?” Also focused on constantly improving its service, Koeble notes that MRS is investing in technology.

“With our suppliers, including Great Dane, refrigeration unit manufacturers, and bulkhead supplier ITW Insulated Products, we’ve developed specs for what we believe is the right trailer and configuration to handle everything from deep frozen to refrigerated loads,” he says. “Our dealer, Trudell Trailers, was also involved and helped as we gathered information from a cross-functional team of MRS transportation and warehousing employees, discussed ideas, and formulated specs.” The result was a set of trailer specs developed for the unique nature of the MRS consolidation and refrigerated LTL service offering. “The design that came from those meetings was a cold draw system that allows us to haul dual-temperature loads in a traditional single-temp trailer,” Schumacher explains. “The Great Dane Everest SS reefers feature frozen and refrigerated compartments separated by an insulated bulkhead. A thermostat in the rear refrigerated compartment controls an exhaust fan attached to a PVC pipe that blows the colder air in the front through the pipe to the rear when the refrigerated compartment becomes warmer than the thermostat set point.” The trailers also feature a notched corner in the bulkhead to accommodate the PVC pipe. Additionally, a temperature probe mounted in the rear of the trailer is wired into the refrigeration unit, allowing the driver to monitor the temperature in both compartments. While MRS has been in operation under its current management since 2008, the fleet traces its roots and its unique refrigerated LTL load consolidation business model to the early 1990s. “We’ve had to change many things over the years and find new and better ways to serve our customers,” Koeble states. “The only constant in this business is the need to be smarter.” AT

2015 Truck Review American Trucker highlights each OEM’s Class 8 lineup BY DAVID CULLEN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

cover story
I
n the fuel-conscious and ever-greener world that is trucking, it should be no wonder to read that Class 8 truck builders are offering more alternative-fueled trucks than ever along with a variety of newly put together spec packages that aim to boost diesel mpg. Truck OEMs are also bringing to market more integrated and optimized powertrains—all engineered specifically to cut down on fuel consumption. What’s more, truck makers are advancing yet further the aerodynamic sculpting of on-highway tractor models
to lift their mpg performance. The biggest news at the top of the GVW scale includes Caterpillar’s introduction of its second work-truck model—the set-forward-axle CT681—as well as Mack’s debut of its new LR Series of LCOE refuse trucks. But that’s not all. There’s word out that Western Star will roll out an “all-new highway truck” model dubbed the 5700 sometime this fall. No matter why, how or where you run trucks, this special editorial section once again puts the spotlight square on what’s new in new trucks.
A
utocar Industries has introduced natural gas power to another model in its lineup of vocational trucks for refuse and other applications—the Class 7-8 Xpert. Described at launch by the manufacturer as a “Baby 8,” the Xpert’s “smaller, more nimble size makes it uniquely ideal for crowded and cramped urban refuse collection,” said the company. Originally rolled out in 2012 as a diesel-powered truck, the cabover Xpert can now be powered by a Cummins Westport CNG/LNG engine. The Xpert was designed to “fill a void” in the marketplace. “Waste haulers have long complained of a gap in their urban fleets, as the current conventional cab medium-duty trucks fall short in a number of ways,” stated Autocar. “These trucks are not designed to withstand tough jobs, and the chassis wear out too quickly. They are not engineered to integrate with a refuse body, and they offer less driver comfort and visibility.” The Xpert addresses those issues by using many of the same “toughest-in-class components” as the heavier Xpeditor ACX. Autocar said the Xpert is “the first and only medium-duty truck with severe-service strength on a smaller wheelbase, beating the turning radius of conventional cabs by an average of 8-18%.”
Autocar Xpert “Before the Xpert, waste haulers had been forced to make do with cookie-cutter conventional cab trucks, which fall short in the everdemanding refuse hauling application. The Xpert is designed, tested and specified to withstand the serious refuse hauling that we and our customers know and live every day,” said president Jim Johnston. However, the Xpert is not limited to refuse-truck applications. For example, Autocar and Elgin Sweeper
joint-engineered a fully integrated sweeper-chassis design. Per Brian Giles, Elgin Sweeper products manager, the two companies “shared engineering strategy and CAD data to ensure minimal cab/chassis modification work would be needed. “All popular chassis options were made available and superior operator ergonomics were optimized on both sides of the factory dual-steer system,” Giles noted. www.autocartruck.com

avistar International has announced no new models or major changes to its Class 8 truck lineup for the year ahead. Earlier this year, the OEM’s International ProStar highway tractor with Cummins ISX15 power was named the American Truck Dealers’ Class 8 “Truck of the Year.” Looking ahead, the OEM has advised that it is engaged in a joint program with truckload carrier Swift Transportation to pilot-test a specification it has designed to maximize the fuel efficiency of the ProStar. The pilot spec pairs the ProStar with the Cummins ISX15 diesel engine and the Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated manual transmission. The truck builder stated that it expects the test results will “deliver industry-leading fuel-economy results,” especially given that Navistar’s internal testing showed the spec provides an 8% improvement in fuel economy compared to a 2011 model-year ProStar, which the OEM noted “also led the industry in fuel economy.” “Our testing shows this truck configuration provides outstanding fuel economy performance, and we
International ProStar are confident Swift Transportation will experience the same benefits we have observed,” pointed out Bill Kozek, Navistar’s president of North American Truck and Parts. In other news, Navistar has enhanced its OnCommand Connection remote-diagnostics system, which offers fleets real-time fault codes, vehicle locations, nearby dealer locations, and fault code action plans within an online portal. The OEM is currently partnered with telematics-service providers such as Omnitracs, PeopleNet, Teletrac, Geotab, XRS, CyntrX, Vnomics, and Pedigree Technologies. enworth Truck is expanding the offerings for its T680 linehaul tractors. For starters, the OEM has engineered a special fuel economy package for this model. KW said its T680 Advantage package provides a 1% fuel economy gain, thanks to its aerodynamic enhancements alone. The Advantage factory-installed aerodynamic treatments include longer side extenders for the T680 76-in. sleeper; lower cab fairing extenders; front air dam; aerodynamic mud flaps; rear fairing without steps coupled with an air deflector; exhaust cut-out covers; optional wheel covers for drive tires; a weightsaving 6x2 axle configuration; and wide-base tires. The T680 package also boasts an optimized powertrain combining Paccar’s MX-13 engine integrated with an Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission that KW said delivers another 2% in fuel savings. In addition, new software programming and the “lubrication strategy” for the latest version of the MX-13 provides another 1% fuel economy gain, said KW. On top of that, the OEM expects the incorporation of more efficient drive axles, which were slated to be added to the package in May, to provide yet another 1% gain. All told, according to KW, the elements of the Advantage package add up to a 5% fuel savings. Also new for the T680 is optional natural gas power. Both the

Kenworth T680 Advantage T680 day cab and 52-in. mid-roof sleeper will be available with a factory-installed Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas engine rated up to 400 hp. and 1,450 lbs.-ft. of torque. Optionally available with the natural gas engine will be the Eaton UltraShift Plus automated transmission. The OEM said that when the UltraShift Plus is spec’d with the natural gas engine, the resulting powertrain package provides such features as intelligent shift-selection software for performance and efficiency improvements; better launch and shift decisions through grade sensing, weight computation and driver throttle commands; hill start aid to help prevent rollbacks when engaged and simplify operations for inexperienced drivers; and tailored shift logic for efficient operation and enhanced braking performance. The natural gas-fueled T680, with either CNG or LNG, will be
available “later this year.” Kenworth is also offering a new lightweight configuration of its T680 52-in. mid-roof sleeper for LTL/regional applications. The scale weight of this T680 variant version is “close to 15,000 lbs.,” per the OEM. Key weight-reducing components of the configuration are its 12.9L Paccar MX-13 engine, Eaton Fuller Advantage transmission, KW AG380 suspension, MX optimized hood (119-in. BBC), 6x2 drive axle, rear wide-base single tires, aluminum rear wheels, air disc brakes, and aluminum fifth wheel. The Eaton Fuller Advantage 10-speed automated transmission is now an available option on T680 models spec’d for long-haul or regional applications. A factory-installed, battery-powered idle management system is also optional on the 76-in. sleeper variation of the T680. www.kenworth.com

ack Trucks this year is heavily emphasizing that its over-the-road Pinnacle model, which is offered in axleforward and axle-back configurations as well as in a 6x2 version, now features a “wide range of high-performing proprietary engines” along with the Mack mDrive automated manual transmission. According to the OEM, Mack engines are GHG 2014-certified and offer up to a 2.4% increase in fuel efficiency while the mDrive improves drivability and boosts fuel efficiency by up to 5% over a manual transmission. The OEM also pointed out that a new version of its Mack Pedigree powertrain (which combines a proprietary Mack engine, transmission and axles), dubbed the Mack Super Econodyne, “seamlessly integrates a Mack MP8-445SE engine, mDrive transmission, and proprietary axles to increase fuel efficiency by up to 3% compared to similarly spec’d vehicles. What’s more, a drag-reducing roof, chassis and side fairings are also available as options. According to Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks North America sales & marketing, the OEM is also focused on “products and services developed specifically for each customer’s unique needs.” He said its GuardDog Connect telematicsbased solution is a case in point, noting that the system quickly diagnoses potential issues, proactively schedules repairs, and confirms that the required parts are in stock and ready to install—all while a truck is still on the job. “We are also partnering with other companies, such as Telogis and PeopleNet, to provide additional
Mack Pinnacle productivity tools,” Roy said. Due out from Mack in 2015 is the LR Series of low-entry cabover refuse trucks. These will be initially available in three-axle 6x4 configurations and powered either by diesel or natural gas. The OEM said that it “captured customer input during the design and engineering phases of the new LR and utilized the feedback to highlight the characteristics core to a refuse truck—outstanding driver comfort, efficient operation, and exceptional visibility and safety.” All LRs will come spec’d with a Mack MP7 11L diesel engine with horsepower ratings from 325 to 345 and torque ratings from 1,200 to

cover story OEM said its EPIQ package can increase fuel efficiency by up to 10% via improved performance of key components and an optimized spec that utilizes the most fuel-efficient options available. The EPIQ package includes the Eaton SmarTire tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS), the Paccar MX-13 engine, Eaton Fuller Advantage UltraShift Plus automated transmission, aerodynamic fairings and enhancements, low-rolling-resistance tires, and optimized drivetrain software. In addition, the APEX drivetrain option for EPIQ pairs the MX-13 engine with the Eaton Fuller Advantage and features optimized shift calibration, weight savings, and proprietary control logic between the two components. Pete is also offering Bendix SmarTire as a separate option on the Model 579 as well as on the Model 567. The TPMS system monitors the pressure and temperature of each tire on the vehicle in real time and will warn the operator of potential problems. The vocational Model 567 has also gained several new enhancements, including expanded PTO functionality when paired with the MX-13 engine. New features include the capability to activate external notification of impending diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration; remote throttle while in PTO mode; and the ability to have DPF regeneration take place during PTO operation. Pete also said it has added more functionality to its Driver Information Center. The new module, which is available for Models 579, 567 and 587 powered by MX-13 engines, monitors numerous vehicle systems and driving habits to provide operator feedback through a scoring system that rewards practices to reduce fuel use and minimize brake wear. The display shows a driver his performance scores in categories such as braking and coasting, as well as a

Volvo also said its XE integratedpowertrain packages can produce up to an additional 3% in fuel savings. The packages for Volvo D13, D16 and D11 engines result in them only turning 1,150 rpm at 65 mph, according to the OEM. In addition to faster rear axles, the XE packages include clutched air compressors and low-friction internal components to reduce parasitic losses as well as a new fuel-injector design. According to Goran Nyberg, president of North American sales & marketing, the XE packages for the 13L and 16L engines account for over 20% of its truck orders. He added that he expects the 11L XE package to be especially popular with regional haulers as Volvo estimates the added 3% improvement in fuel efficiency could translate into a cost savings of as much as $2,000 a year. Volvo noted that while it is currently offering day cab and sleeper models powered by spark-ignited
Volvo VNM natural gas engines (ISL G for VNM models and ISX12 G for VNL models), the OEM “plans to begin taking orders for trucks equipped with the Volvo D13-LNG compression-ignition engine in late 2014.” Also on the alternative fuel front, Volvo advised that it currently has four trucks powered by DME being field-tested by a fleet in California with another set of five units under-
going internal testing. As for diesel, Volvo has reported that its trucks powered by engines certified to 2014 GHG standards are providing up to a 3% improvement in fuel economy compared to the company’s 2013 engines. What’s more, that increase is 1% higher than had been originally indicated by testing. www.volvotrucks.com

site pickups, and disaster cleanup isn’t a 9-to-5 occupation. At times, the pressing crush of work obligations would push seemingly mundane equipment needs like oil changes out of sight and out of mind. Unfortunately, that’s not a long-term strategy for vehicle reliability and Pyne knew that. At the same time, he didn’t want a “one-off ” solution just to deal with oil change reminders. Rather, he wanted such reminders to be part of a larger system designed to improve the overall efficiency of the business so he could better maximize the value of his investment.
nter LoJack Corp. and its new fleet management system powered by TomTom. After checking out several options, Pyne settled on LoJack’s telematics offering for his small fleet because it solved several different issues for him, including keeping tabs on equipment maintenance needs. LoJack Fleet Management powered by TomTom is a comprehensive GPS-based telematics system designed for tracking and managing fleets ranging from as few as five to as many as 5,000 vehicles. Pyne uses the system primarily to track the location of his equipment so he knows it’s in the proper place and at the proper job site. “I can look at locations via the Google satellite maps the system is connected to as well as traffic volumes reported by TomTom,” he explains. The system helps track the speed of his vehicles so Pyne knows they are operating safely. Safe driving is what drove him to adopt the LoJack system for his fleet and a separate in-cab camera monitoring package as well. “One year I had a three-fold jump in insurance costs due to accidents, so we had to address that,” he says. Since installing the LoJack telematics package in his
fleet last August, Pyne has been able to cut fuel costs by about 10% largely through reduced idling. He’s also seeing a maintenance benefit, as the system is automatically set up to remind him—and his drivers—when certain preventive maintenance services are due. “There’s a notification tab on the system’s dashboard specifically for maintenance intervals,” he points out. “The system reminds us when we are nearing the interval for engine oil changes or various PM services. That helps us also in terms of scheduling downtime for the vehicle, especially for our trucks, which we take to the local Freightliner dealership for service. “In the past, we might have exceeded the engine oil change mark by 1,000 to 2,000 mi. on our light vehicles,” he continues. “But for our heavy equipment, we sometimes went over the mark by 6,000 to 7,000 mi. That’s not healthy for any kind of truck, and we knew we needed to pay better attention to those intervals.” Over time, Pyne also expects that his ability to keep a better handle on vehicle operating parameters along with better adherence to maintenance intervals will help him extend the useful life of his equipment. —SEAN KILCARR

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?
Do you think of yourself as a trucking company or one that uses trucks in the course of conducting business?
Tire pressure and rotation, maintaining the correct tire pressure, and constant daily inspection of wear and tire condition.
We’re a one-truck company leased to a larger trucking company.
Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? If you stock parts, which ones?
Do you have regularly scheduled routes or on-demand delivery? We haul throughout the United States and Canada with no regular runs.
How are major repairs handled? Your own shop or jobbed out? All major repairs are done at our mechanic’s shop.
How is maintenance handled? Your own shop or jobbed out?
We purchase as needed locally, and through our mechanic’s shop.
Ashton Express Owner: Paul and Gail Morrison In business: Since 2001 Location: Coolidge, GA
How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer?
It’s time to replace when repair costs and downtime become too costly or when it cannot be fixed anymore. The replacement of the trailer is the responsibility of the carrier to which we’re leased.
Leased to Bruce Oakley Trucking, Ashton Express is a one-truck operation hauling bulk commodities and some regular freight to locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
We use a local mechanic who has worked on the truck since it was purchased new in 2004. That truck is a 10-year-old Peterbilt 379 model with 1.37 million mi. under its hood.
What are three challenges you face with your maintenance program? How do you resolve each of these? First is winter corrosion. It’s a challenge to not only keep salt off the truck but keep electrical wires and plugs coated with corrosion-proof grease. Second is scheduling maintenance, as downtime is always a challenge. We plan well ahead for family events and needs, and always keep dispatch in the loop. And finally, keeping up with the priority of repairs—what can and cannot wait.
How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? We do preventive maintenance on the truck every 20,000 mi., as well as weekly inspections, i.e., tires, tread/pressure and wear pattern, brake lining, and lighting.

What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA compliance for your trucks and/or trailers? We maintain a strict preventive maintenance schedule where any deficiencies are repaired or replaced. Add to this a consistent and daily inspection of our equipment, along with keeping the truck and trailer clean and sharp with regular washing. All of these ensure that we’re in compliance with CSA regulations.
What does your company do best? Move bulk freight in ways that exceed our customers’ expectations. C
ustomer focus on retreads continues to change, experts say. “In the past,” says Todd Labbe, general manager, commercial retread at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., “most retread customers were focused primarily on miles to removal. However, an increasing number of fleets are also looking at other benefits that factor into their total cost of ownership, including fuel efficiency and total lifecycle cost.” “The latest retread technologies focus on high mileage and fuel economy,” states Philip Boarts, retread product category manager at Oliver Rubber, a subsidiary of Michelin North America. “As the cost of fuel increases, fleets benefit from new compounds and tread designs in retread technology, and with tires capable of being retreaded several times, the total cost of the tire asset over the long run is lower.” Giampaolo Brioschi, product marketing manager at Marangoni Tread North America, points out that the EPA SmartWay program has had an impact on the retread market. “The need to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by reducing rolling resistance and fuel consumption is a benefit both to the environment and fleets,” he adds. “Verified retreads listed by SmartWay offer fuel savings and long mileage.” Matt Schnedler, retread product marketing manager at Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions, agrees that SmartWay and CARB regulations are driving the development of more fuel-efficient retreads. “It’s not just over-theroad fleets that are interested,” he says. “Many types of regional, local and vocational operations are looking at retreads. The desire to cut fuel costs is universal, and today’s retreads have the same tread design and compound attributes as new tires. As a result, they can offer fleets the same benefits.” Labbe says Goodyear is also seeing an increase in the diversity of fleet approaches with regard to retreads. “Larger fleets are embracing multiple vocations and are diversifying into different areas which, in turn, puts more of a focus on total cost of ownership,” he relates. “They are looking for products to help lower overall lifecycle cost in more vocations than just traditional linehaul. “From a technology standpoint,” Labbe continues, “we’re leveraging our new tire technologies and capabili-

ties in order to develop differentiated retread products, including everything from more advanced mixing, extrusion and materials to compounding and tread designs. We’re taking what we’ve learned about new tires and applying it to our retread technology in order to optimize total lifecycle performance.” Examples of Goodyear retreads include the G572 for drive axle positions on long-haul vehicles, available as both precure and Goodyear spliceless UniCircle products. The G619 RST retread, also offered in a UniCircle design, was developed for regional service trailer applications, including high-scrub spread axle trailers. Tire and retread manufacturers provide examples of how they are matching designs to deliver performance and benefits. For example, Continental Tire the America’s retreads have always had the same tread design and compound engineering as its new tires, the company notes. The ContiTread line of all position, drive and trailer models is offered for precure or cold retreading using the same tread pattern design as the company’s new tires. The Bandag B197 FuelTech trailer retread for on-highway applications is designed to complement the Bridgestone R197 Ecopia new tire and promote long tread life and fuel economy. The Bandag B710 FuelTech drive retread was engineered to complement the Bridgestone M710 Ecopia tire on tandem drive axles in on-highway use. The Marangoni Energeco line combines the manufacturer’s Ringtread spliceless technology with its Energeco compound. Trailer and drive axle designs for dual and wide base tire models are included.
