Here’s a shocking statistic: According to analysis conducted by the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the number of cybercrime incidents reported by federal agencies this year alone are up 680% over 2006 numbers. Such a huge increase in cybercrime should provide a big moment of pause for any freight hauler, especially if you think about just how much trucking is Cybercrime being encouraged—if not forced outright—to use electronic mediums for communicating is an issue all manner of data, especially cargo manifest information. to monitor In case you’re wondering why this is a big deal, the call for public/private collaboration to fight cybercrime is a significant departure from previous policies that instead urged government and business to maintain separate national security and intellectual property defenses. “Cybersecurity is more important than ever not only for the public sector but for the private sector as well,” noted Marcus Sachs, vice president-government affairs and national security policy for Verizon, in a recent speech. “Our ability to fend off increasingly sophisticated attacks can be improved by pooling our resources and intelligence to safeguard our national systems, critical infrastructure, and our country’s intellectual property,” he said. “Without a collaborative approach that’s both flexible and highly responsive, we will remain at risk.” It’ll be interesting to see what role trucking is expected to play in this new effort to thwart cybercriminals. Dealing with CSA

T

he Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) CSA safetyscoring system is leading owners and managers of truck fleets of all sizes to rethink every aspect of their operations that has a bearing on highway and driver safety. But the larger a fleet is, the more resources it can draw upon to take on the challenges of CSA. On the other hand, according to Nick Goodell, general manager-trucking & transportation for Compli, a web-based provider of safety, HR & compliancemanagement systems, small- to medium-sized fleets dealing with CSA can “often be overwhelmed, especially with CSA changes and updates seemingly occurring on a daily basis.” As Goodell sees it, “size-challenged” fleets lack resources like the fully staffed and automated IT and HR departments prevalent with most of their bigger colleagues. The upshot is “many are ... only responding when a violation or intervention occurs, quietly suffering through higher operating costs,” he explained. “Others are networking with peers for advice, but only at the upper management level with little or no information ever finding its way to drivers and other employees.” Along with seeking CSA answers from such resources as state trucking associations, professional consultants, attorneys and accountants, Goodell told American Trucker that “more and more small to midsize fleets are also turning to software providers that can serve as another important source for standardizing and simplifying CSA processes. “A solid safety, HR and compliance management software system

6 American Trucker/August 2012

Software can help manage compliance. can help carriers be proactive and knowledgably predict potential problem areas before they become an area of CSA concern,” he continued. “Systems also provide a good communication channel for drivers and other employees for issuing updated policies, training, reporting forms, and more to keep CSA scores low.” In Goodell’s view, software systems today also allow fleets to be more proactive and better manage CSA inspection reports. “If a violation does occur, the required training can be automatically generated to the violator as well as the supervisor and other interested parties,” he advised. “Once the training is completed, the system allows employees to automatically sign off on it and the company has an audit trail.” He also pointed out that “despite the myth that switching from a paper system to an electronic one can be an arduous task, most contemporary electronic CSA management tools can be quickly and easily installed— with a typical installation being completed in a matter of days. Your better providers will already have all of the back-end work pre-populated and set up for a smooth integration.”

The art of selling M

arketing is the art of selling your company. Even small companies can take advantage of the benefits of marketing. Here are five strategies to help you succeed: ❑ Repeat, repeat and repeat again. Repetition is the best means to make sure the world knows who you are and what you have to offer. Be consistent with your message. ❑ Brand recognition is achieved when current and potential customers think of your company and the services it provides as one. This should be the number-one goal of your marketing initiatives. ❑ Satisfied customers tell you how pleased they are; raving fans tell the world. Which one do you want? To create raving fans, you must first become a raving fan of your shippers. ❑ ‘Planned’ versus ‘take it as it comes’ planning. Remember, the same principle applies to marketing as to running your trucks: Preplanned loads and lanes are the way to success. So have a defined marketing plan. ❑ Your top “brand ambassadors” are your truckers. The best way to keep shippers coming back is to treat drivers the way you want them to treat customers. Flat prevention

I

I n every line of work, there are always some inevitable

problems that appear to be without a solution. Saying these are the costs of doing business is simply easier than saying there has to be a solution, but we just can’t figure it out. When it comes to preventing flat tires in the trucking industry, the search for nirvana has led us to travel numerous roads, most of them with obstacles that cannot be Investment in avoided. The fact is that flat tires cannot TPMS solutions be avoided. Road debris, curbs and worth considering other hazards are going to breach the pressurized air vessel. In some cases the damage will be repairable and in others it will not. The key is making sure that the tire and/or casing is brought to a professional repair facility for a fair and educated assessment. You can’t talk flat prevention unless you start with liquid sealants. These products are guaranteed to stop the leak—and many of them are quite effective in that respect. But the sealant typically makes a mess on the inside of the tire, so it needs to be washed out before it can be properly repaired or retreaded. Unfortunately, this often comes at an additional cost. Even if the object is removed and the sealant continues to stop the leak, the damage to the belt and body cables is still there, and it doesn’t repair itself down the road. The newest entry in the race to prevent flats is the solid sealant. The concept of a solid sealant is to coat the inner liner under the tread with sticky material that will maintain its shape while the tire is rotating and then seal the area around a penetrating object or the void left by one. Although there appears to be a market

12 American Trucker/August 2012

for this type of sealant, the damage is still not removed, it is extra weight, and the repair process is difficult to say the least, so expect extra charges. Then there are the automatic inflation systems that provide constant air to the trailer tires. While they are very effective at reducing tire cost and extending tread life, they are also limited to trailers, and the driver is only notified that a tire is losing air. The driver has no idea how bad the situation is or how many trailer tires are losing pressure, so this lack of information can and often does lead to expensive guessing if they choose to bank on the system staying ahead of the air loss. Finally, fleets can install electronic tire pressure monitors in each tire that will allow the driver to see the actual inflation pressure at each position. The notification of air loss would be instantaneous, allowing the driver to resolve the problem as soon as possible while at the same time protecting the tire and casing asset. Even though a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) works on every wheel position, this technology still hasn’t caught on with mainstream trucking. Flat tires cannot be prevented, but they can be easily identified and properly repaired before the casing is in jeopardy of an early exit that would ultimately require emergency road service. In fact, TPMS becomes fool-proof when the inflation pressure data is monitored via telematics, which means drivers cannot ignore the in-cab warning indicators. If you’re looking for a solution to the run-flat problem, the technology is in place. With rising tire prices and roadside service costs, the return on investment deserves a much closer look. AT

WHOLESALE DELIVERY

Fresh adaptation Distributor stays on top of specs to ensure quality product

E

Everything in the distribution operation changes every day, says Serge Tremblay, fleet supervisor for the Edmonton, Alberta-based western division of Sobeys Inc., a Canadian retail grocery and food distributor. “Our customers are always expecting high quality, reliable temperaturesensitive service from us,” he states. “At the same time, we have multitemp refrigerated trailers running in different provinces, each with their own size and weight regulations. “It’s also not uncommon to be dealing with a variety of climates and weather conditions,” Tremblay adds. “Our division operates mainly in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia, a territory covering millions of square miles. We serve customers as far north as Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and south to Calgary and the U.S. border, so we could have a reefer overheating or freezing on the same day.” Equipment choices at Sobeys are driven by logistics and by ongoing expansion of the product lines the company supplies to more than 1,300 stores in 837 communities. We haul a lot of dry bulky goods, along

Go to

with a growing number of refrigerated products, such as a large number of dairy and cheese items, from our warehouse in Calgary,” Tremblay says. “We have also started hauling our own packaged meat products. Each product type requires different temperature zones in our trailers, and everything must be maintained within a few degrees of a specified set point to ensure its integrity.”

DOUBLING UP The long distances that Sobeys’ equipment travels have led to the use of about 20 sets of turnpike doubles. Dedicated carriers pull the pairs of 53-ft. reefers, along with the rest of the western division’s trailer fleet. “It can be a struggle to find the best company, but we’ve been fortunate with the carriers in our system for the past six or seven years,” Tremblay says. “Before then we had company tractors, but with new emissions regulations it became too expensive to justify the investment in equipment. “We continue to own our trailers, in part to ensure product quality and integrity,” Tremblay explains further. “We spec the reefers in great detail

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

and perform or oversee a strict maintenance regimen in-house and at trailer dealer and outside service vendor locations throughout our operating area.” The Sobeys western division has settled on Great Dane reefers fitted with multi-temp refrigeration units from Thermo King. It has also added some Carrier models. For the past five years, it has been adding Super Seal models to its operation and most recently ordered 18 Great Dane Everest units. Currently, there are about 160 refrigerated trailers in the operation. “Our plans call for replacing between 12 and 20 trailers annually, and along with growth in our western division business, we’ll most likely be buying more in the coming years,” Tremblay says. The trailers at Sobeys, he explains, are specified to meet particular needs. The tri-axle models are all equipped with pintle hooks for use in turnpike doubles operations. Additionally, extra insulation in walls and roofs helps ensure thermal efficiency in a region where winter temperatures in some northern locations can routinely reach -10 deg. F or lower. A wholly owned subsidiary of Empire Co. Ltd., headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia, Sobeys operates 23 distribution centers across Canada. Founded in 1907 as a meat delivery business, the company initially employed a horse-drawn cart to collect livestock from farmers. Today, it carries a significantly larger amount and variety of freight, and in all cases works to address changing needs while ensuring product integrity and on-time delivery service.

shop talk MANAGER: Dan Vander Pol TITLE: Director of maintenance FLEET: Oak Harbor Freight Lines, Seattle, WA OPERATION: Oak Harbor operates some 2,000 trucks offering LTL and custom freight services

Stacking efficiency S

pending more on maintenance is anathema to most fleet managers. Yet that’s exactly the strategy regional LTL carrier Oak Harbor Freight Lines began to contemplate initiating last year. The company believed that higher maintenance costs in this one instance could actually save more money in the long run in terms of reducing cargo damage while boosting fleet productivity. In this case, the problem centered on the removable “beams” the Seattle, WA-based carrier used to secure cargo within its trailers. “We found these beams were inefficient, costing time and money,” says Dan Vander

PROBLEM

O

ak Harbor decided to use the Kinedyne Kaptive Beam “double decking” system to create a “second floor” within its trailers to more fully load them with freight. Pol says the traditional “floor load” only method of loading freight often filled a trailer to capacity before it reached the allowable cargo weight meaning in some cases a truck SOLUTION limit, was being driven only half-full. The tracks and beams within the trailer of the Kinedyne system provide drivers with multiple cargo storage and securement iterations, with the added benefit that the beams can never get misplaced as they are permanently installed in the trailers themselves. “This system helped reduce our ‘damage’ claims, as the second level provides a strong and secure alternative to stacking loads directly on top of another pallet,” says Pol. “We also no longer need to replace beams from being mistakenly left behind at a site. The unneeded beams slide to the top of the track and are properly stored out of the way at ceiling level.” That’s a big deal as the removable loading racks used by Oak Harbor prior to adopting the Kinedyne system would stack up at inbound terminals and have to be

14 American Trucker/August 2012

Pol, director of maintenance. “Beams would be left at one location after a haul was finished and then have to be shipped back to the next location as needed.” However, installing a permanent “double decking” beam system not only would cost a pretty penny upfront, it would add to the fleet’s maintenance costs. “Maintenance to the trailers would definitely increase,” Pol explains. “But [cargo] damage costs can eat up a large percentage of a company’s profits if they are not monitored carefully. Ensuring our drivers have the best securement equipment available and are properly trained on the use of that equipment is critical.”

shipped back to outbound terminals. And with 33 terminals scattered across the Western U.S., it resulted in a lot of shipping costs. Permanently adding a system like this to Oak Harbor’s trailers significantly boosted maintenance work for each unit, such as adding more items to the shop’s preventive maintenance checklist as well as extra items for repair and service. Thus, the question Pol faced was simple: Would that extra maintenance expense be recouped from operational improvements? The answer, happily for Pol, was yes—and quickly, too. “The payback in increased productivity is probably within one year over the cost of purchasing,” he explains. “Decreasing maintenance cost was not our motive in buying the Kinedyne system. We purchased it because of its stacking ability and the flexibility to get the most payload onto a trailer without damage.” Today, 50% of Oak Harbor’s trailer fleet is equipped with the Kinedyne Kaptive Beam system, with more units being retrofitted every day. And it also fits in nicely with the 90-year-old company’s belief in putting the best maintained equipment on the road. —SEAN KILCARR

he drudgery of business can be summarized in a single word: accounting. Keeping the books is an endless job. When most businesspeople think of accounting, they think of it as a means to paying the least amount in taxes possible. Tracking every expense and revenue, though, impacts more than just the tax bill. Measuring the financial health of a trucking operation and determining what’s working and what isn’t by looking at the cash flow and the resulting profit, or lack thereof, is very important. Waiting until the facts and figures are urgently needed can result in money being left on someone else’s table or, in this case, in a competitor’s trailer. Frankly, with the exception of that rare individual who loves tracking revenues and expenses, the vast majority of those owning small businesses have far more interest in anything other than listing debits and credits on a spreadsheet. So think of business accounting

as evaluating the financial position of a business through its sales, purchases, and expenses. Accounting records are maintained in chronological order in a format that can be easily reviewed. You can look at the

The results will easily tell you the overall health of the organization; in essence, they are a graph of the company’s key vital signs. The business owner will be able to tell if a particular product or service his or her business offers is priced correctly or if it needs adjusting. He or she will be able to gauge when growth and expansion is possible or when it’s time to tighten the belt or even batten down the hatches to preserve capital. On the other hand, if done improperly, accounting and bookkeeping can do more harm than good. The biggest mistakes come from micromanaging the information. One area of trucking that seems to be vastly misunderstood and where the greatest area of unnecessary micromanaging occurs is when trying to manage a trucking operation and hauling rates based on annual cost per mile figures. Simply put, cost per mile based on total annual cost divided by total miles traveled in a year—while the answer may be numerically correct—is a useless piece of information. The reason? There’s one factor that supersedes cost per mile, and that’s time. The greater the miles in any period, the lower your cost per mile; however, the opposite also holds true. The

fewer miles in any period, the greater your cost per mile. This is true because of your fixed costs, which must be calculated by time not miles. Fixed costs occur regardless of whether a truck moves or not. Because of this, the fewer number of miles a truck moves over a day, week, month or year, the higher its cost per mile will be. If the static per-mile figure calculated over the period of a year becomes nebulous, it’s difficult to determine the financial health and profitability. The volatility of fuel prices is another reason an annual per-mile rate is of little practical use when analyzing your business. An annual permile figure only averages your fuel costs. If the cost of fuel is higher than the annual average calculated, then the hauling rates based on that number will be too low and will take away from the company’s profitability. If the fuel cost is lower than the annual average, while perceived profit may be higher, the competitiveness of the carrier’s hauling rate is inflated over that of competitors. Recordkeeping is the heart and soul of any accounting system.

Keeping track of expenses, as difficult as it seems, can help increase your company’s bottom line in multiple ways. For the sole proprietor and partnership-owned companies, every $1 of undeclared expenses represents a loss of about 40.5¢ out of that business owner’s pocket; that amount then goes directly into the coffers of the U.S. Treasury Dept.

DEFINING DEDUCTIBLES Knowing how the company’s money is being spent will allow you to determine whether or not those expenses were necessary. Without correctly categorized expenses, it’s nearly impossible to determine the validity of the expenses. The first step in controlling costs and reducing taxes is to familiarize yourself with a deductible expense. The IRS defines this expense as “an ordinary and necessary expense incurred while furthering your business, trade, profession or activity for profit. It must also be customary, usual or normal for your particular type of business.” Note that the expense must also

be “reasonable.” As you can see, the IRS has left these definitions open to interpretation. Rather than presume an expense isn’t deductible, it would be better to presume that it is deductible then let your tax accountant or CPA make the final decision based on their experience with the IRS. Finally, any discussion on accounting and recordkeeping would be incomplete if the subject of using this information to determine your operation’s break-even point wasn’t included. The bottom line is that you need to know not just your company’s break-even point, but the break-even point of each piece of equipment you operate. In this economy, if every trucking business keeps excellent financial records, thus ensuring the highest profitability and the lowest amount of taxes paid allowed by law, not only will carriers not flatline, they won’t AT even need a get well card.

The shape of th Aerodynamics for trucks and trailers are critical for fuel savings By Sean Kilcarr, editor

I

t’s no secret that the aerodynamics of today’s trucks and trailers are huge determinants of fuel economy. Yet truckers may be surprised to discover that even just simple tweaks to the shape of today’s trucks and trailers can reap huge savings in fuel over their operating life. For example, a prototype 2014 Freightliner Cascadia Evolution Class 8 tractor showed off by Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) earlier this year offers a 5% improvement in fuel economy

18 American Trucker/August 2012

over the 2013 version, according to DTNA’s engineers. Even more impressive is the fuel efficiency recorded in highway tests using this prototype in combination with a specially modified 53-ft. trailer loaded out to 76,000 lbs. and running at 62 mph on average: an astounding 9.31 mpg. In closed test track testing, DTNA said its modified big rig notched 10.67 mpg, How were these extraordinary

fuel-sipping numbers achieved? DTNA’s engineers said half of the improvement comes from combining the company’s new Detroit DD15 engine with its new DT12 automated mechanical transmission (AMT). The other half of the fuel savings, though, results solely from aerodynamic improvements such as fuel tank and trailer side fairings, better engine hood shape, and wide-

base tires and wheel covers. “The only way to achieve such a significant improvement is through a total systems approach,” explains Mark Lampert, DTNA’s senior vice president-sales and marketing. “You can’t simply optimize one component; you have to deal with

the entire vehicle.” Still, the important role aerodynamic design plays in trucking is nowhere near complete, as changes continue to be made to help highway tractors reduce fuel consumption. Landon Sproull, chief engineer for Peterbilt Motors, notes that while performance and productivity were

the key guideposts in developing the company’s new Model 579 tractor, fuel economy proved to be one of the most important metrics in the design process. “Maximizing fuel economy was a priority, and we achieved bestin-class aerodynamic efficiency through computational fluid dynamics and subsequent wind tunnel testing,” he says.

American Trucker/August 2012 19

cover story Subsequently, Sproull notes, aerodynamic performance became a top priority for the Model 579: a metric enhanced through modular aero packages that meet EPA SmartWay designation. “The aero packages are designed to meet customer optimized requirements with variable length chassis fairings, sleeper extenders and rubber flares, under-cab close-outs, and under-fairing skirts,” he explains.

DESIGNED FOR FUEL ECONOMY

The same thinking went into the design of Kenworth Truck’s new T680 highway tractor. Gary Moore, general manager, says the truck was designed to address several of what he notes are critical demands in trucking, especially the need for improved fuel economy. “Fuel economy is still king,” Moore says, pointing out that the T680 sports a 10% improvement in aerodynamic design when compared to Kenworth’s T660 tractor. This is an improvement that translates into 5% better fuel economy, which translates into $4,000 worth of fuel savings per truck per year based on a diesel cost of $4/gal. Aerodynamics also influenced how engineers dealt with maintenance expenses. Kenworth notes that its research indicates 3 to 5% of tractors per year encounter damage to the side extenders and sleeper, so the company made those components

Engineers factored in maintenance costs of aerodynamic features when designing the Kenworth T680. easy to replace. The tractor’s three-piece hood is made of sheet molding compound, a lightweight, durable composite material, while its grille is made from corrosion-resistant aluminum wire mesh for protecting cooling system components. The two-piece aerodynamic bumper and chassis fairings are made from thermoplastic olefin, which not only improves impact resistance, according to the company, but lowers the cost of repair and replacement. “This is part of our focus on providing trucks with the lowest total cost of operation to customers,” Moore notes. “It’s all about the monetary contribution to the bottom line now,” stresses Magnus Koeck, vice president-marketing and brand man-

agement for Volvo Trucks North America. “Fuel costs really have an impact on that bottom line,” Koeck notes. “That’s why aerodynamics, automated mechanical transmissions, and more fuel-efficient engines are becoming much more critical to our customers.”

WEIGHT CONSCIOUS

David McKenna, director of powertrain for Mack Trucks, points out that more work on truck and trailer aerodynamics, along with design changes to reduce weight, will remain critical to any and all future design work where trucking equipment is concerned. “Trailers will certainly continue to evolve relative to tare weights, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance,” he says. “Tare weights will continue to be reduced through the ever-increasing use of aluminum components such as wheels, crossmembers, suspension components, and body panels.” There also will be increased use of wide-base tires for weight and rolling resistance with lighter weight braking systems. “Further enhancements to aid trailer aerodynamic design will continue to reduce drag; this will not be limited to van type trailers, as bulk tankers and flat bed operators will see some better aero management,” McKenna notes.

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

More emphasis will be put on the aerodynamic features of tractors, too, with the outright removal of some current options such as full-width bug deflectors, oversize fender-mounted convex mirrors, size and shape of West Coast mirrors and mounts, he says. “We recently introduced optimized aerodynamic aids that improve fuel efficiency on our Pinnacle sleepers by up to 6%,” McKenna adds. “Also, non-fuel economy-rated tires will become extinct, and all forward-facing joints will become completely flush with all gaps sealed with gaskets, channeling the air to where it should and shouldn’t go,” says McKenna. “Exterior sun visors will also likely be optimized for aerodynamic improvement as well.”

“Side skirts are located in harm’s way and are subject to impact damage and will have some maintenance cost that is still not 100% known. At present, there are some 42 different side skirt models listed on the EPA SmartWay-verified web page alone,” he points out. “Some of these are probably more durable than others, with some ‘torture-tested’ to withstand severe impacts. With others, who knows? That’s why the buyer needs to know he has a reputable manufacturer and that the device has been structurally tested to ensure safe operation,” Cole notes. “Trailers operate in an abusive environment, and trailer aerodynamic

the evolution is moving to total cost of ownership, which is reliant upon durability and reliability.”

INITIAL VS. TOTAL COST

Fletcher says that an inexpensive trailer aero system becomes very expensive when it must be repaired or replaced repeatedly, as there is no reimbursement for downtime or labor incurred. He added that his decadeslong truckload operation experience with U.S. Xpress Enterprises testing trailer aerodynamic products demonstrated that, so far, they are challenged by the extreme work environments in which such equipment must perform. “Temperature extremes are caus-

THE MATCH GAME

Ramin Younessi, group vice president-product development and strategy for Navistar, echoes those thoughts. “Efforts are being made to better integrate the tractor and trailer for fuel economy, with gap fairings and better ‘matching’ of trailers to tractors,” he says. “We need the square shape of dry van trailers to haul the required load. There’s not much we can do about that; you won’t be seeing bullet-shaped trailers anytime soon,” Younessi adds. “But the trailer guys are pushing hard on fuel economy, too. So we’ll see a lot of incremental design changes to improve aerodynamics as well as lower weight to make fuel economy improvements.” Efforts are also afoot to improve the durability of aerodynamic devices now in use on trailers, such as side skirts, in part to help defray potential repair costs. Chuck Cole, manager of technical sales and product training for Utility Trailer Manufacturing, explains that the unknown long-term costs associated with trailer aerodynamic device maintenance is a growing concern.

Designing integrated packages that include both tractor and trailer will help improve aerodynamics. device makers need to take that into consideration,” adds Jamie Scarcelli, vice president/general manager at Wabash Composites, a division of Wabash National. “We have had a lot of new companies jump into this space without fully understanding that key requirement.” Marty Fletcher, executive director of customer service and product development for trailer aerodynamic device maker Aerofficient, believes the evolution of such products will focus more intensely on durability and maintenance in the near term. “When systems were first being deployed, initial price was the most important factor,” he says. “But now,

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

ing warping and eventual cracking or delamination,” he explains. “Ground contact, most commonly in dropdown docks, is causing breakage, while support struts are failing due to fatigue. The design evolution must be to strengthen [trailer] fairings.” Mitch Greenberg, president of aero device maker SmartTruck, agrees. “The design evolution should take us to more integrated designs where concepts are better incorporated into the initial design of the trailer,” he says. “Keeping components inside the footprint of the trailer will grow more important, so the systems are not subject to damage, as well as minimizing installation times.” AT

Price and performance are often considered first with equipment, and trailer suspension repair or replacement is no exception. Like virtually all products, durability and quality that deliver quick return on investment are first and foremost on the minds of customers. “Our Intraax and Vantraax suspensions are … known for their reliability and durability,” says Brian Buckham, senior marketing manager-trailer commercial vehicle systems for Hendrickson USA, which will be celebrating its 100th year in business in 2013. “[Our products] deliver enhanced ROI, matched with world-class warranties and unconditional customer support from a brand they can trust.” Improved materials and production enhancements have allowed Hendrickson to reduce weight and improve reliability, durability and productivity of its Intraax and Vantraax products. “The design optimizations … have resulted in weight reductions that translate to more payload and ultimately increased ROI for our customers,” says Buckham. “Our suspensions are designed with fewer wearable parts than those of competitors, so maintenance is considerably lower for trailer owners.” At Meritor Trailer Products, Bill Wakefield, managerstrategy and product management, is seeing more customers looking for technology to help them reduce costs. “The first is helping to reduce the cost of ownership, especially in critical areas such as fuel economy, tire wear and maintenance. We are working toward lighterweight materials, weight-efficient designs, and suspension designs that prioritize improved tire wear and fuel economy,” says Wakefield. “The second ... is intelligent feedback. Customers want technology that will help them be more efficient, such as a suspension that sends a warning signal to the driver when it is not operating at correct ride height or when the slider pins are not properly engaged.” The Meritor MTA suspension family offers equivalent fuel efficiency improvements as the RideSentry, while offering a “unique bushing and shock absorber design that works together to create better braking, handling and ride quality than competitors’ products,” Wakefield says.

Weight reductions are helping add payload

The Meritor MTA line offers equivalent fuel efficiency to the RideSentry.

Even as technological advances improve durability and reliability, price still remains a contributing factor when purchasing a suspension, says Bill Hicks, director of product planning for trailer systems at SAF-Holland. SAF-Holland recently launched the CBX Series to address these needs.
