Decisions issued by judges can often become incomprehensible documents as they tend to be weighted down with ponderous terminology (adjudication, amicus curiae, and habeas corpus, just to name a few). Not so the recent hours-of-service (HOS) ruling issued by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, penned by Judge Janice Rogers Brown. FMCSA imposed the requirement of a 30-minute off-duty break on both long-haul and short-haul truckers. ATA did not take kindly to the new requirement.” Just goes to show that the long-drawn-out battle over HOS is not without some prosaically fun linguistic flourishes. AT

Vans becoming critical tools

ersatility is becoming a watchword in the commercial van space as fleets and small-business owners alike are not only demanding lower cost and better fuel economy, but also easier upfit capability so vans can be better customized to serve specific segment needs. “Fleets are getting much smarter now,” explained Peter Bedrosian, senior manager of product planning for Nissan North America’s commercial vehicle division, during a special ride and drive event hosted by the OEM in San Diego. “They are taking parts of their fleet and trying to make them more efficient,” he said. “So for jobs and services that don’t require a lot of tools or goods, they are trying to use smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles.” “We think there’s growth in the perspective of fleets looking for vehicles with greater fuel economy yet greater versatility as well,” Brooke Hoekstra, Nissan’s manager of fleet and commercial vehicle marketing, told American Trucker. “If they can go small, they will go small, because they are seeing a lot of potential for small cargo vans.” She noted that versatility also is becoming a more critical aspect of van design, noting the integrated mounting points and mobile office features of the OEM’s new NV200 compact cargo van as examples. Bedrosian said that the NV200 combines 1,500 lbs. of maximum payload and 122.7 cu. ft. of cargo
Customers want their commercial vans to be a lot more versatile. volume with combined city/highway fuel economy of 24 mpg in order to make the van’s smaller footprint as efficient as possible. He also noted the $19,900 entry-level price of the NV200 is designed to make the van attractive to a wider array of businesses in the commercial segment. Adding more technology to such vehicles, though, remains a tougher sell, Bedrosian added. For example, Nissan is introducing what it dubs a new “convenience technology” offering for its 2014 Versa Note entry-level compact car. The Around View Monitor video camera system provides a 360-deg. exterior view of the vehicle to the drivers; however, such a system may take a while to make an appearance in the commercial space. “Technology is typically a harder sell in the commercial segment. While there’s interest in it and other technologies such as our onboard navigation package, we’ll need higher volumes to make it practical for this segment,” he explained.

Follow the money S
o, where’s that money going that your trucks are earning? Even if you have an accountant or bookkeeper, as owner, you must check your carrier’s cash accounts frequently— and it’s not just to prevent wrongdoing by your staff. Someone outside the carrier office could be submitting invoices for inflated amounts or even fake charges. You don’t need to be paying a bill for “replacing turn signal fluid” just because the bookkeeper thought it looked legitimate. Here are some steps to follow: ❑ Institute a rule that every invoice, regardless of amount, must be signed by you before it’s paid. ❑ If your bookkeeper or accountant prepares the checks, he or she can’t sign those same checks. Take the time to look over each check as you sign. ❑ Get a signed, dated statement from your bookkeeper or accountant each month that shows the bank statement has been checked and reconciled. ❑ Periodically ask to see the bank statement, all canceled checks, and invoices for the previous month. Although this may seem detailed and nitpicky, it can significantly increase your chances of catching any fraud. Simple steps, sure, but they could save your company a lot of money in the long run. aton Corp. has launched an authorized rebuilder program for select aftermarket providers to rebuild and sell its heavy-duty transmissions. The providers will rebuild the transmissions with genuine Eaton components that meet all of Eaton’s reuse and rebuild requirements. The authorized rebuilders that were selected are Power Train, Indianapolis, IN; TransAxle, Cinnaminson, NJ; and Valley Truck Parts, Grand Rapids, MI. Power Train has 12 locations in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. TransAxle has 23 locations on the East Coast. Valley Truck Parts has five locations in Michigan and five distribution centers nationwide.

ew wireless sensors for mechanical suspension systems from Truck Weight offer off-road and severe-service fleets a low-cost and easy-to-install alternative to traditional load-cell systems for onboard scales. The sensors can be easily installed on tandem spring, single point, camelback, walking beam, and Chalmers suspension systems with no modification needed. When used with Truck Weight’s Smart Scale, the sensors have been tested to be accurate within a range of 1 to 2%, the company said. Ryder adds CNG vehicles

yder System now has 39 lightand medium-duty trucks powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) for lease or rent. The purchase consists of 20 Greenkraft cabover trucks powered by 6.0L GM engines and 19 International TranStar trucks powered by Cummins Westport ISL G engines supplied by Navistar. “We are very pleased to work with Ryder to develop these CNGpowered truck chassis,” said Kevin Keene, sales director for Navistar. “By offering CNG-powered trucks in a medium-duty configuration, Ryder is demonstrating its dedication to making natural gas commercial vehicles available for this important market segment.”
According to Ryder, the CNG trucks range in ratings from 16,000 to 33,000 lbs. GVW and are available for lease or rent in California. The lessor said these vehicles are “ideal for metro/city delivery applications. Unlike heavy-duty natural gas vehicles, which require fueling stations designed to accommodate large commercial tractor-trailers, these lighter vehicles are able to access much of the existing retail CNG fueling infrastructure, which will increase their usability to a broader range of commercial fleet customers in California.” The trucks will be maintained at Ryder’s natural gas-compliant California maintenance facilities. www.ryder.com

The price of nature
I
In early 2010, I predicted price increases on truck tires
because of production issues regarding natural rubber, which traded at around $1.42/lb. at the time. About a year later, I wrote another column about weather impacting the price of natural rubber (NR)—and it hit an all-time high of $2.81/lb. just a short time later. I guess you could say I saw that one coming. Fast forward to the present, rubber prices are down to $1.27/lb., and there haven’t been any runs on price increases like there were a few years back. Even an event like the Bangkok-based International Tripartite Rubber Council (which represents Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia and is the OPEC of the rubber market with 70% of the world supply) announcing it would withhold supply and burn old rubber trees to boost prices in 2012 had no effect. At the time of the announcement about a year ago, the price of rubber was $1.27/lb., so nothing has really changed in that sense. A normal post-recession supply and demand cycle appears to be developing, which makes those in the tire industry happy. According to several NR industry experts, the world should expect stable prices for natural rubber to continue over the next couple of years. Demand from China and India is still growing, but at a more predictable rate than years ago. With relatively flat demand from North America and a decrease in Europe, it looks like the surplus that has kept prices down over the past year or two will actu-

ally continue at the global level through the end of 2014. If those experts are right, then any price increases on tires in the near future will have to be attributed to something other than the cost of natural rubber. But it isn’t time to pop the cork on the champagne yet. We have to remember that natural rubber is still an agricultural product and subject to all the variables regarding weather and disease. If there’s too much or too little rain in Southeast Asia and production slows down, the global supply takes a huge hit. And like any living plant or animal, rubber trees are always at risk of contracting a disease. When you’re talking about a plant that requires six or seven years of care before the first ounce of sap can be collected, any widespread issues regarding the health of the trees themselves could trigger another spike similar to that which occurred in 2011. Tire companies are spending millions of dollars to look for alternatives to NR, but they are probably decades away from making a significant impact on the demand for natural rubber. It has been a key raw material in manufacturing since the tire was invented—and I don’t expect that to change in my lifetime. No matter how you look at it, the global tire industry is still dependent on farmers in Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. Years ago, I studied Chaos Theory in graduate school and was amazed by the delicate balance in nature. It’s difficult to imagine a butterfly in Brazil setting off a tornado in Texas, but a quick look at natural rubber prices over the past few years definitely provides some perspective. The scary part is that if the massive NR butterfly flaps its wings and sets off another “tornado” like the one from 2010 to 2011, nobody will see it coming. AT

Alternative fuel choices help utility meet challenges

It was no surprise that Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) was front and center at the recent Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative gathering in San Francisco where the company displayed its wide range of “green fleet” vehicles. Included were a bucket truck and material handler truck that uses a plug-in battery-powered system from Altec called the Electric Worksite Idle Management System (e-WIMS) to power lights, hydraulic lifts and tools at the job site. There was also a VIA Motors extended range electric pickup; a Smith allelectric medium-duty service truck; and electric cars from Chevrolet, Ford and Mitsubishi. As one of the nation’s largest combination natural gas and electric utilities, PG&E serves about 15 million people across 70,000 sq. mi. of urban, suburban and rural territory in northern and central California and fields almost 14,000 vehicles. Incorporating sustainable transportation technologies in its operation for many years, the company currently has about 3,400 electric, natural gas and hybrid cars, pickups, vans, and
trucks in its fleet. “Making effective choices for every thing from passenger cars to Class 8 trucks is challenging enough,” says Dave Meisel, senior director–transportation & aviation services. “In addition to meeting the operational and financial needs of our business model, we also have to address California’s clean air regulations, which are the strictest in the country, and consider how many vehicles we will need to meet those regulatory requirements.”
BUILDING INFRASTRUCTURE Simultaneously, Meisel notes, PG&E is investing in support systems for its alternative fuel vehicles. In addition to the 32 compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas fueling locations it operates across its service territory, the utility has already installed more than 100 electric vehicle charging stations and has construction of over 30 more underway. The company is also ensuring its technicians are up to the task of servicing alternative fuel, hybrid and

electric vehicles. Using a “train-thetrainer” approach, its PowerPathway Clean Tech Vehicle Training Network sends PG&E master mechanics to train instructors at community colleges, who in turn train fleet technicians. “For all types of vehicles, we also need to constantly determine effective lifecycles,” Meisel states, “so we routinely benchmark our operation. Every year, for example, we exchange visits with other utility and non-utility fleets. We share information with some of the few multi-state utilities in the country that operate more than 10,000 units, and with package, food and beverage operations that are similar in size to our fleet.” To gain an industry-wide view of its cost performance, PG&E also uses the services of Utilimarc, a provider of benchmarking, fleet consulting and business intelligence services. The company, Meisel notes, lets PG&E compare specific fleet metrics from its own operation against an industry database of as many as 400,000 units. Analyses can include reports on costs by mile, unit, type, region and fleet size. “The value in that process is that we’re looking at consistent data so we have an accurate comparison of where our operation stands relative to other fleets,” Meisel says. “We can also ask Utilimarc to provide data on individual and groups of fleets in its database and on specific cost areas. The analytics point us to places where we find opportunities to improve.” The 14,000 units in the PG&E fleet are maintained by about 375 technicians at 63 facilities and with 80 mobile service vehicles. By continually finding cost-effective practices and deploying environmentally friendly vehicles, PG&E is fielding a highly efficient and sustainable fleet.

e all remember those awkward teenage years when our bodies grew faster than our coordination. Owning a trucking business is also a bit awkward during times of growth. Growth of a company needs to be carefully planned, as it’s during times of expansion that it’s most vulnerable to failure. First of all, there’s the increase in debt that comes with growth. There’s an increase in overhead, higher labor costs, hiring and training new personnel, and educating current team members. Most important, there is getting the cash flow over to the positive column so that cash reserves are not depleted. You have limited sources of revenue and infinite places money can be spent, and during expansion that’s truer than at any other time. A certain number of buildings, trucks/trailers, employees, and contractors, along with time and energy to maintain it all, is required so your company generates the revenue needed to support these cash outflows. Above all else, it must provide a profit at a level commensurate with the total cost of doing business. With all the costs necessary to operate your trucking company at maximum sales volume, if you’re looking to grow, you need to increase revenue to a point where it not only covers your increased costs, but also increases your profit to that next level. When you’ve committed

to that new larger terminal with the truck/trailer repair shop, more tractors and trailers and the personnel to make it all hum, you’ve tremendously increased your “break-even point.”
POTENTIAL
For example, consider the owner who has operated a trucking business for six years. They’ve successfully controlled driver turnover and have an experienced team of 19 drivers. There is a great operations department with two dispatchers who work well with the current truckers. There is a single bay, one-mechanic shop and the owner is the lone salesman for the entire operation. But there is potential to double the company’s size. Let’s say the business is doing $4.1 million in annual sales, with each truck averaging nearly $18,000 per month in revenue ($18,000 x 12 months x 19 trucks = $4,104,000.) Fixed costs (truck payments, insurance, real-estate payments, office employee pay, etc.) total $622,000. Operational costs for the current 19 trucks and drivers (running an average of 11,000 mi./month) are $3,260,400 for an annual break-even point total of $3,882,400. At this level, profit amounts to $217,600. Since there is an established

shipper base and available market share for the service area, the business owner is convinced that by doubling the size, even more money will flow in. But will it actually? Here’s what to look out for.

The company goes to the used market for the additional 19 tractors, thus increasing fixed costs by $21,000/month for truck payments. Nineteen used trailers will increase fixed costs another $7,000/month.

Added to this, the increase in insurance is another $11,400/month, for a total increase of $39,400/month or an additional $472,800 per year in fixed costs. Tis is getting uncomfortably close to doubling the current annual fixed costs (original 19 trucks at $622,000 + new 19 trucks at $472,800 = $1,094,800). But wait, there’s more. Add to this the cost of at least one more dispatcher, a salesperson and a mechanic, figuring close to an additional $200,000 for salaries. This pushes up the annual fixed cost to $672,800, meaning new total fixed costs for running 38 trucks with all those inherent expenses would increase to $1,294,800. Will the revenue increase to a level that will increase net profit by the end of the year? Let’s say the business doubles sales and keeps all 38 trucks rolling, averaging $17,000 in gross revenue per truck per month. (The estimated gross revenue is $1,000 per month lower per truck as a cushion for the volatile freight market and the need to potentially take a lower rate to keep all 38 trucks running with loads.) Yearly sales revenue would be $7,752,000. For this discussion, we figure operational costs of $1.30/ mi. (65¢ for fuel, 15¢ per mile for maintenance and repair, and 50¢ per mile for driver and employment costs). Each truck averages 11,000 mi./month. Operational costs per month are $14,300 x 38 trucks totaling $543,400 per month. For the year, that adds up to $6,520,800.

Adding the operational cost of $6,520,800 to the fixed cost of $1,294,800 results in a break-even point of $7,815,600. Instead of making a profit of $217,600 with 19 trucks, there is now a loss of $63,600 with the 38 trucks.

Before you travel down that highway of no return, run your numbers. And in this volatile age, be on the conservative side. Granted, if the carrier in our example could maintain or increase revenue per truck at current levels, the owner would nearly double his $217,000 profit. But keep in mind there’s always that lag time between putting new equipment on the road and when it starts to have a positive (read that profitable) cash flow. It might be wiser to expand by a truck or two over time, say one a month, and get each truck to a positive cash flow with consistent revenue production before adding the next truck, thus spreading the risk over a greater period. Growth must be carefully planned and executed with forethought and due diligence one truck and one driver at a time. Tis gives your cash flow time to keep up with the added costs and lets operational personnel become accustomed to each new driver. It also provides a greater window of time to train everyone and to see the problems that need solving before moving forward. t’s one thing to talk about the virtues of switching to an alternative fuel such as propane, but it’s quite something else when a fleet starts looking at the operational impact of making such a switch. That’s the situation that Chicago-based Alpha Baking Co. faced when it decided to integrate propane-powered trucks into its delivery fleet, according to Bob McGuire, the company’s vice president and director of logistics. The baking firm decided to buy 22 Ford Motor Co. E-450 delivery trucks this year. Each vehicle is equipped

with Roush CleanTech propane autogas technology to help save on fuel costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2 million lbs. over the lifetime of the units. “We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do,” McGuire notes. “First, these propane-powered bread delivery trucks will emit fewer emissions, and our company has been extremely progressive in doing the right thing for the environment. Second, propane is produced here in the U.S. and is therefore good for our economy.” But the question remained: What would be the maintenance needs of these vehicles?
lpha Baking decided to outsource the maintenance of its new propane-powered truck fleet to Penske Truck Leasing, its long-time vehicle lessor. This not only eliminated the expense involved in taking care of the trucks themselves, but also the challenge of finding and hiring experienced propane vehicle technicians or funding training initiatives to bring techs up to speed on the technology. “Alpha Baking is a long-time lease customer and our lease sales team helped the company identify alternative fuel truck options,” says Mark Swift, Penske’s vice president-field maintenance for the North Central Region. The decision to ultimately buy those 22 Ford E-450 trucks equipped with the Roush propane system relied in part on Penske’s detailed experience with that particular technology. Swift added that no changes were required to any of Penske’s maintenance shops to service propanepowered trucks, either. “Our company is familiar with propane technology; our logistics business uses propane forklifts in its warehouse operations,” Swift says. “Prior to acquiring this service contract, we did our due diligence by working with
our corporate safety office to ensure we were following Illinois state laws and regulations.” Swift also points out that Penske’s technicians took multiple training classes offered by Roush to make sure they were very familiar with all the components of the propane fuel system. “We started the training in the spring, shortly before the units arrived, so the training was still fresh in their minds,” Swift adds. “The [propane] system itself is pretty basic and the technology has been around for some time so that helped us during the implementation. Overall, the amount of training hours was not significant.” While he notes that Penske’s technicians are still learning the particulars of servicing Alpha’s propanepowered trucks, they adhere to prescribed OEM maintenance intervals and service standards so there haven’t been any cost issues or unexpected vehicle downtime. “I feel this has been a very successful transition,” Swift says. “Our technicians are among the best in the business, and they enjoy working on the different types of trucks. They were excited to get this new equipment in and begin working on it.”

Many tactics are required now to recruit and retain truck drivers
I
t’s no secret that the trucking industry is suffering from a shortage of drivers. How to solve that shortage, however, is becoming something of a mystery as relatively low pay and the challenges posed by living on the road for long stretches are turning off many potential recruits.
The shortage is also becoming a more pressing concern to the industry as it shows little signs of abating. According to an American Trucking Assns. (ATA) white paper issued late last year, the current shortage of 20,000 to 25,000 drivers in the for-hire truckload (TL) market could grow to over 239,000 during the next 10 years if something isn’t done to address the issue. “Carriers and fleet executives have begun expressing concern about their ability to identify and hire qualified professional drivers,” noted Bob Costello, ATA’s chief economist.
SHORTAGE COULD SPREAD
Right now, ATA thinks the bulk of the shortage is confined to longhaul, over-the-road TL carriers, but that private fleets and LTL carriers may also begin to experience difficulty finding, hiring and keeping drivers. Changes to hours of service (HOS) and the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program in combination with industry growth, retirements and drivers leaving the industry will exacerbate the shortage. “On average, trucking will need to recruit nearly 100,000 new drivers every year to keep up with demand for drivers, with nearly two-thirds of the need coming from industry
growth and retirements,” Costello warned. Gordon Klemp, president and founder of the National Transportation Institute (NTL), said in March that other factors could exacerbate the shortage further, including: ❑ Generous unemployment benefits (99 weeks) currently available to Americans. ❑ The burgeoning “underground economy,” which provides tax-free income resulting from part-time work such as mowing lawns, plowing snow, etc. ❑ The evolution of stricter driver hiring criteria relating to health, safety record, substance abuse history, etc. ❑ The intrusion of technology into the cab, which has the net effect of pushing away drivers who are uncomfortable with the “big brother effect” created by this technology. ❑ An aging driver population where more older drivers leave the industry than younger ones are being hired. ❑ The expansion of private fleets, which offer more regular routes, more home time, and greater annual compensation. ❑ The acute lack of “young blood” in the truck driver community as only 17% of the current population of

truck drivers and owner-operators are 34 or below, while 51% are 45 or older. “Clearly, not enough younger workers are being attracted to an industry which does not pay all that well,” Klemp explained, noting that driver wages in 2012 ranged from $37,400 to $57,939 per year. “It’s also an industry that requires a lot of time away from home, and which requires you to buy your own meals and other personal items while on the road,” he added.
REVOLVING DOOR
“There’s a hole in our collective boat, and we’re doing little more than bailing,” stresses Duff Swain, president of the Trincon Group, a trucking consulting company. “The industry continues to fight high turnover rates, leaving companies scrambling with lost productivity while they recruit and retrain new drivers as fast as they leave. For many, it has become a revolving door.” Swain adds that the industry has not defined a long-term solution or strategy to solve the problem, forcing individual companies to find their own solutions based on available resources. “Those companies that find solutions will be the winners,” he says. “Those that don’t will fail or go out of business as the industry continues to constrict and consolidate.” Increasing driver pay is, of course, one place to start, and many carriers are engaging in such efforts—especially where “specialty” operations are concerned. For example, in June, Schneider National boosted pay rates for com-

cover story pany drivers serving in its tanker division 2¢ to 3¢ per mile, while offering for a limited time a $7,500 sign-on/on-boarding bonus to experienced drivers and driving school graduates willing to serve in its tanker division ranks. Not only is offering higher pay a problem for many cash-strapped carriers, but fatter paychecks may not address all the issues a truck driver faces. Swain notes that carriers must, in many cases, change their thinking about drivers; they must consider the driver position as a highly paid role that requires a high-quality applicant.
CHANGING MINDSET
“This may constitute a radical change in mindset with many companies,” he says. “Many may make the excuse that those kinds of applicants are not available, but this is a cop-out. The fact is quality people are available, but they have become conditioned to be treated the same as poor quality people who are not given a chance to demonstrate their competence and reliability.” So why do drivers leave? “They leave companies because they perceive a lack of communication and feel like they are not respected or valued,” Swain continues. “It is not

Time and time again trucking companies have increased pay only to find that the driver will still leave, blaming poor earnings. But the bottom-line issue is do drivers feel valued? Pay, of course, is a motivating force in non-competitive situations. But equalize the pay and you will find the problem still exists.” That’s why Tyler LaBarge, managing partner for CDL Career Now, believes other tactics must be deployed in the effort to find and keep drivers for the long term. First, new drivers in particular are probably dealing with loans that helped them pay for driver training courses—courses that don’t come cheap. “Most drivers entering the trucking industry are already under some

sort of financial stress,” LaBarge says. “That’s why it’s important for motor carriers of all sizes to help alleviate the students’ financial burdens through monthly tuition reimbursement payments. That will save on their driver turnover costs.”
IN-HOUSE CANDIDATES
A related effort focuses on canvassing a company’s current pool of employees to see if any are interested in piloting a truck for a living. For example, last year LTL carrier Saia began stepping up efforts to comb the ranks of its dockworkers to find employees with the right safety mindset and work ethic to help drive its fleet of 2,475 city and 1,820 linehaul tractor-trailers. “There’s a great demand for drivers in this industry, but the advantage we see in recruiting from within is that we know the work ethic and mindset of those employees already,” notes Marty Ready, Saia’s vice president-human resources. Ready says that workers displaying the right safe operating skills when using yard tractors to “hustle” trailers between dock locations are encouraged to attend local truck driving schools. Then, upon obtaining their commercial driver’s license (CDL), they get “finishing training” from Saia’s veteran drivers. Ready adds that such “internally recruited” drivers also tend to be

cover story safer ones on average. “That’s because they are people who are already instilled with our safety beliefs, who know and follow our policy and procedures from their experience on the dock,” he explains. “They handle the customer’s freight like it is theirs—because they know that’s where their paycheck comes from.” Fellow LTL carrier Con-way Freight engaged in a similar effort in terms of recruiting from its dockworker ranks when it established its own national network of driver-training schools over three years ago. Con-way’s 12-week driver-training program currently operates in 84 cities across the U.S. and is provided at no cost to candidates; students earn income as dockworkers while learning their new profession. Investing in attractive and reliable equipment is another tactic in the driver recruitment and retention battle, says CDL Now’s LaBarge. “The reliability of equipment is important. Remember, when a truck is down, nobody is making money, with the exception of the tow truck and repair garage,” he stresses. “The truck is the driver’s home and he or she is happier in better equipment,” he points out. “To take it one step further, perhaps fleet owners should ask the drivers for

DRIVER WELLNESS
Focusing on driver health and wellness plans is a priority for the industry. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), poor health is reducing the lifespan of the average trucker to 61 years, five years below the national average. “Drivers need and deserve such attention. After all, they’re dealing with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and obesity,” LaBarge explains. “So, carriers should sponsor a weight loss or nutrition program monthly or quarterly. health goals. Trucking is a lifestyle change and isn’t for the faint of heart. There really should be measures in place to help keep the driver population healthy.” Finally, LaBarge thinks offering a career path of some sort to drivers is a necessity, even if that path might eventually remove them from behind the wheel. “It’s not uncommon to hear about a driver becoming a supervisor, a dispatcher, a trainer or a recruiter,” he explains. “Inform the drivers of their options and clearly state the expectations.” That’s why Trincon’s Swain believes retention is a “multi-part process” that ideally begins with recruitment and moves forward through qualifying, screening and orienting a new employee, and then followed by a transition into the job, periodic reviews, accountability and recognition. “Drivers want to be treated fairly. They want to know what is expected, whom they work for, how they are doing, how to resolve problems, and what is going on that will affect them,” he explains. “It’s also unsettling that the trucking industry has not been successful in creating a career-conscious driver,” Swain emphasizes. “There has never been a career path associated with truck driving. And now the industry is running out of existing drivers and must attract new entries into trucking. If we attract them, and don’t keep them, what have we accomplished?” “It’s a tough business with some extremely talented and dedicated professionals behind the wheels. They do deserve more respect, more pay, and more attention,” adds CDL Now’s LaBarge. “Pulling together, our industry as a whole can help create the next generation of drivers who are motivated, informed, welltrained and ready to succeed on the open road with pride.” AT

How do you ensure good tire mileage?
Charles Kuhn started JK Moving Services in 1981. He was only 16 years old, but Kuhn saw the moving industry was in need of change. His vision for JK included an ongoing investment in state-of-theart technologies, facilities and employee training. JK is now the third-largest independent moving company in the United States.
Proper air inflation on tires is key. We have a proactive tire maintenance program involving our tire supplier. Newer trailers have systems that automatically inflate tires to proper levels each time the truck is started.
Do you perform maintenance on your vehicles yourself, or do you outsource the work? Both. The bulk of our trucks, however, are over the road (OTR). To service those, we frequently use TA and Petro truck stop repair facilities because there are so many available. Ninety-five percent of our long-distance tractors are Volvo, so we’ll sometimes use a Volvo dealership if the repair dictates. If the unit is in the D.C. area when the repair is needed, we’ll handle it in-house. With three full-time mechanics, we’re fully equipped to handle everything from oil changes to rebuilding an engine.
How do you minimize downtime? Whether it is in-house or OTR, comprehensive, periodic inspections are vital so we identify and address smaller issues. For long-distance tractors and trailers, JK performs regular maintenance every 15,000 mi. For local straight trucks, it’s every 7,500 mi. These adhere to manufactur-

Over 40% of all diesel engine downtime is coolant-related, says Joe Long, director of sales-Power Fleet Div. at Penray Companies. “Today’s advanced engine technologies can be more susceptible to premature failure and damage from contaminated or substandard coolant. An understanding of the differences in coolants may help reduce cooling system failures that could lead to premature engine wear and failure,” he says. Modern heavy-duty engines produce extremely high amounts of heat, points out Colin Dilley, PhD, director of technology for Prestone Products, in a company technical report. “Excessively high internal temperatures can . . . cause increased NOx emissions, and possible hot spots that can cause pre-ignition, oil degradation, and thermal distortion,” he says. “All of these conditions can have an adverse effect on engine performance and lead to premature breakdown or failure. “In order to eliminate these potential problems and deliver optimal performance,” Dilley continues, “modernday heavy-duty engines need a similarly advanced cooling system and a careful operating balance between the cooling system’s various components and the coolant that is used. In short, cooling systems are best served when they use specially formulated antifreeze/coolants that have been designed to meet the demands of the current gen-

eration of heavyduty engines.” Mo s t a nt i freeze is largely comprised of ethylene glycol as the base and a smaller proportion of water and additives, notes Long. A small fraction of the antifreeze market uses propylene glycol as the base, but it’s usually more costly. Generally, a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water is installed in the engine’s cooling system. Additives called inhibitors are included to protect metal surfaces. As coolant is used, inhibitors deplete and may need to be replenished with supplemental coolant additives (SCAs), especially when using fully formulated conventional antifreeze. Conventional antifreeze is known as inorganic acid technology (IAT). To help extend intervals and simplify maintenance, extended life coolants (ELCs) have been developed. ELCs utilize organic acid technology (OAT) as an inhibitor to help protect metal surfaces in the cooling system. ELCs may also contain inhibitors known as nitrited organic acid technology (NOAT). ELCs based on other types of inhibitor technology or using both IAT and OAT chemistry are known as hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT). Modern-day formulations of heavy-duty antifreeze/ coolants have been specially designed to deliver engine protection. The Prestone Command line of antifreeze/ coolants includes ELCs, a blend of ethylene glycol, and an OAT inhibitor package designed for heavy-duty cooling systems. Old World Industries makes Final Charge coolant/ antifreeze products for heavy-duty cooling systems, and Fleet Charge, a fully formulated supplemental coolant additive precharged coolant/antifreeze. Penray offers a variety of cooling system products, including Pencool 2000, a liquid formula that reduces scaling and corrosion and acts as a lubricant in the cooling system. Also available is Pencool 3000, a cooling system treatment that helps prevent the formation of gel deposits. Evans Waterless Heavy-Duty Coolant (HDC) is a proprietary and patented blend of synthetic materials and soluble additives. Evans HDC protects engines, the company says, because it boils at a much higher operating temperature than water used in conventional coolants.
