The trends are looking good for the industry right now, despite ongoing challenges such as productivity losses engendered by hoursof-service reform and the driver shortage. Donald Broughton, managing director, senior research analyst and chief market strategist for Avondale Partners, noted during a presenFracking is tation in late August that he’s maintaining a “relatively optimistic outlook” for the truckbut one reason ing industry. for growing He bases this on the “industrial-led recovery,” particularly the growth in frackoptimism ing, which is allowing the U.S. to extract up to six times more oil compared to just four years ago and driving petroleum shipments up 24.7%. And Jonathan Starks, director of transportation analysis for research firm FTR Transportation Intelligence, thinks that strong freight demand is giving carriers the ability to win rate increases. “Every indication is that rates are continuing to trend up and stay in the mid-single digits versus year-ago comparisons,” he told me late last month. “Spot rates are a little stronger, but they actually had a bigger hole to dig out of coming out of the recession. Contract rates will show more muted gains.” There is a bit of caution, though. “We’ve never seen what an industrial-led recovery looks like,” Broughton noted. Still, there’s enough optimism that things will keep looking up for trucking in the near term. AT

ProMaster City gets official introduction

R

am Trucks has officially unveiled its newest entry in the commercial van market, the Class 1 Ram ProMaster City. It joins a rapidly expanding truck segment of modern-technology small commercial trucks that includes the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200 and soonto-be-released GMC/Chevrolet City Express. Initial delivery of the 2015 model through Ram’s commercial dealer network is expected to begin in the fourth quarter. Like its larger sibling, the full-size ProMaster Cargo van introduced last year, the 2015 ProMaster City is based on a commercial truck platform provided by Fiat, Chrysler’s parent. The Fiat Doblo is now in its third generation and has sold over 1.3 million units, according to Ram. The front-wheel-drive ProMaster City, which will be offered in both cargo and passenger configurations, has been specifically adapted for North America with its own powertrain and a number of suspension and other modifications, the company said. Unlike the diesel-powered Doblo, the ProMaster City carries Chrysler’s new 2.4L Tigershark 4-cyl. gasoline engine. Using a variable electrohydraulic valve actuation system, it’s the same engine just introduced in the new Ram 1500 full-size pickup. It produces 178 hp. and a peak torque of 174 lbs.-ft. at 3,900 rpm. Also unique to North America is a 9-speed automatic transmission, the first in a commercial van application, ac-

The Class 1 van will reach dealers by the fourth quarter of this year. cording to Ram. Other changes include revisions to the front MacPherson strut suspension and independent bi-link rear suspension to handle typical North American road conditions and air bag and impact control modifications to meet U.S. safety standards. With a wheelbase of just 122.4 in., the ProMaster City can hold up to 131.7 cu. ft. of cargo and has a payload capacity of 1,883 lbs. The flatfloored cargo area measures 87.2in. long by 60.4-in. wide. For users carrying standard building materials, it has 48.4 in. of space between the wheel wells. Rear doors are split 60/40 and open 180 deg.; dual sliding side doors are standard. The Cargo Tradesman model will come in two trim levels, as will a five-passenger wagon configuration. All ProMaster City models will be built at Fiat’s Bursa, Turkey, truck plant and upfitted to cargo van configurations by removing rear passenger seats and side door windows at the Chrysler Group Transformation Center in Baltimore, MD.

trucking insights

Motivational policies T

he good thing about having policies in place for your small fleet is that they’re not law. The bad thing about those policies is that they must be implemented. Having good policies can help you retain your best drivers, keep up office morale, and generally make life a little easier for everyone. You could say your fleet’s policies contribute heavily to its corporate culture. How do you set good policies? Start with the real basics: food, clothing and shelter. Most small fleet terminals have a coffee pot, soda machine and microwave. If that’s all the budget allows for the breakroom, then keep it simple. But keep it clean and well-lit. Make sure the vending machines are working and the coffee pot is filled. If your drivers wear uniforms, see that those are clean too. It might be a good investment to have a washer and dryer on the premises for those drivers who spend lots of time outside their cabs. To encourage that team feeling, it’s also a good idea to have a dress code for office workers, perhaps the same shirts. As for shelter, are the offices reasonably neat? No roof leaks or sluggish plumbing? Trucks and trailers washed regularly? Comfortable seats for drivers? There you have it. Your first policies are in place. Without a doubt, the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program has changed the way commercial vehicles are operated by drivers, maintained by fleets, and inspected by vehicle enforcement officials. And with government data that supports the positive impact it is having on reducing accidents and identifying carriers in need of intervention, the trucking industry can be certain it is here to stay. One of the advantages Cooperation that the Federal Motor Carleads to rier Safety Administration (FMCSA) repeatedly coma reasonable municates is the ability for CSA to adapt to change. It’s solution already happened in a number of areas, so hopefully the trend will continue, especially when it comes to the subject of underinflated tires. According to 49 CFR 393.75(h), “No motor vehicle shall be operated on a tire which has a cold inflation pressure less than specified for the load being carried.” To the outside observer, this makes perfect sense. A tire that is incapable of supporting the load is prone to overdeflection in the sidewalls, which leads to excessive heat that ultimately results in a separation. FMCSA has even attempted to account for the inflation pressure increase that is the result of heat from normal operation. On paper, it appears to be a perfect solution. But in reality, things that look good on paper sometimes do not translate into anything beneficial. For the past year or so, a group of tire manufacturers and other industry experts within the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) have been searching for a real-world solution for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA). Since underinflation is currently a three-point

violation under CSA, it’s causing significant heartburn for fleets because there is no reasonable definition or reliable formula for determining if a tire has insufficient inflation pressure. As someone who has invested hours of time on this discussion, I can assure you that the solution is far from simple. The factors that determine if a tire can carry the load are so numerous that it is completely unreasonable to expect vehicle enforcement officials to make an on-the-spot regulatory determination during a CVSA roadside inspection. So, the TMC group worked with CVSA to explain the issue, and both organizations came to the same realization: 49 CFR 393.75(h) should be repealed. The existing definition of a flat tire being 50% of the maximum inflation pressure molded on the sidewall makes perfect sense and should remain unchanged. Even with all of the variables, everyone agreed that there must be a threshold where a tire is considered flat. It’s a perfect example of the industry working with the government to develop a solution. CVSA is primarily interested in getting it right and after the issue was thoroughly explained, it agreed that enforcement officials cannot be expected to make the necessary calculations during a roadside inspection. Now it’s in the hands of FMCSA. Three of the stakeholders have weighed in that the only solution is to repeal 393.75(h). I believe that everyone is motivated by the same principle that safety is the main priority, so I remain optimistic that FMCSA will agree that the responsible approach is to listen to the industry experts and the law enforcement community. Set up for success

BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR

Developing a cohesive marketing plan will turn happy customers into raving fans a service you’d like to sell. In our business, it’s hauling freight from one location to another. We need customers (shippers) to provide our services. To be successful truckers, these shippers have to want us to

haul their commodities. Separating ourselves from the rest of the hauling pack requires marketing the value of our services. Step one: Identify your customer. Who is your customer? Your customers are the shippers and receivers for whom you haul. However, don’t forget this also includes brokers, agents or other trucking companies through which you contract for freight. In other words, your customers include everyone you interact with when hauling a load.

hat’s your marketing strategy for the future? How are you going to maintain your current customer and freight base, and how are you going to grow it? What are the best methods to find customers who fit into the niche you’ve developed? Where will you get the biggest bang for your marketing buck? As a general concept, marketing is easy to understand. You have

HENRY TRUCKER’S TRIBUTE EDITIONS Made In America Or Not Made At All

They are the road warriors of highways, truck stops, and loading docks. Blue-jeaned executives whose office is their cab. Guardian angels in 18-wheelers, often the first to stop at an accident to make sure us four wheelers are safe too. Most of all truckers are men and women who sacrifice sleeping in their own beds and kissing their kids goodnight so we have fresh milk in our fridge and gas in our cars. In recognition of their dedication to keep America moving, Henry Repeating Arms is honored to present the Henry Golden Boy Trucker’s Tribute Edition. A trucker is the real deal just like a Henry Repeating Rifle, living life based on the same values of reliability and accuracy. He knows a loaded truck, much like a loaded gun, is something to respect and that safety is key on the road. The trucker moving across America deserves a true piece of Americana -- the Henry Rifle, authentically produced, assembled and engraved in the USA by American craftsmen. ABOUT THE ENGRAVING ON BOTH MODELS: On the right side of the receiver cover is an image of an eastbound 18-wheeler moving commodities coast to coast across the wide expanse of the United States. It has been expertly cut by hand engraver Heidi Roos of Baron Engraving and plated in 24K gold with a banner that reads TRUCKERS MOVE AMERICA. Framing the image is classic truck pin striping that any trucker can identify with.

The left side of the receiver cover features an engraved image of a convoy of trucks heading west on a ribbon of tree-lined highway. This image is also plated in 24K gold and sports the rightful banner BOUND FOR GLORY. The classic truck pin striping detail continues with bright cuts highlighting the artwork. The right side of the American Walnut buttstock has a laser etched and hand painted replica of a Truck Stop sign in multiple colors. This welcoming trucker icon is a nod to the rest, good food and shared camaraderie that truckers embrace on their journeys until they are able to flip flop. A symbol of American Pride, this unique Henry Trucker’s Tribute Edition is a testament to our country’s appreciation of truckers, their spouses and families and the many miles they log on our behalf. business of trucking To complete the identifying process, define what your customers need and what they want. The best way to accomplish this is to ask them what they would like a trucking company to do for them that their current carriers are not doing. Then figure out a way to do it. Step two: Be creative when determining your strategies to fulfilling the needs of your customers. Being creative puts you ahead of the competition. Think outside the box (or trailer) when it comes to services that you can provide that add value to your hauling services. How about GPS locations of trailers containing freight; continual updates from the drivers as to how they’re meeting the pickup and delivery schedule set by the customer; or daily weather updates and road conditions along the route? Keeping your customers well-informed and in the loop is key. Step three: Set up your tactics to produce creative strategies. Tactics are the actions you’ll take to attract and maintain your customers. Anything you can do to keep the customer informed of the whereabouts of their freight is the number one tactic. The best tactic in attracting new customers is word of mouth. You want your customers to tell everyone that your carrier “does what its management says it’ll do. They never over-promise, and they go above and beyond their service requirements to be sure freight is hauled sans any events that may cause delays or damage.” Step four: Develop ongoing customer relationships. This is your preventive maintenance plan, i.e., customer service plan. Your continued success doesn’t depend on how many loads you haul but how you haul each load. Develop a trusting relationship with each customer by provid-

ing the highest level of service on each load. Just like you do pre-trip and post-trip inspections on your equipment, you need to also do a pre-load and post-delivery analysis on every load you haul. When doing so, be sure to answer the following questions: ❑ Was pickup and delivery done on time? If not, why? What will be done in the future to ensure ontime service? ❑ Was there any damage to the

A satisfied customer will tell you how pleased they are with your services; a raving fan will tell the world you are the very best at hauling freight. freight? What is being done to rectify this with the receiver? How will it be prevented in the future? ❑ What was done to add value to the shipper? What can be done in the future to either continue this added value or, if there was none, to add value to the very next shipment hauled for this customer. ❑ What does the customer think of the overall performance? Surveying the shipper, broker and receiver on every load provides vital information as to the quality of the job just completed for them. Step five: Create value in what you do so your customers receive service beyond expectation and you attain financial success. Customers need to feel like they received more than their money’s

16 American Trucker/September 2014

worth for the services provided. Anyone can haul more loads by offering the lowest hauling rate, but the lowest hauling rate doesn’t create the highest value for either you or your customers. Develop a profitable hauling rate based on the high quality of services, and your actual costs will create the value for you to be competitive in the hauling market. Step six: Be sure you have quality customers. Developing long-term trusting relationships with customers who appreciate your level of quality at the rate you charge and who pay their invoices in a timely manner will provide the basis for long-term growth and success. It’s easier to sell additional services to trusted customers. They’re also more likely to accept needed rate increases. The cost of maintaining good customers is far less than finding new ones. When both trucker and customer are interested in the success of the other, both will achieve success. In trucking, building an effective marketing strategy includes creating value-added services your customers both need and want. Going the extra mile is what moves you from having satisfied customers to creating raving fans. The difference between “satisfied customer” and “raving fan” is a satisfied customer will tell you how pleased they are with your services; a raving fan will tell the world that you are the very best at hauling freight. And that becomes your marketing strategy for the future. There is no better or more effective marketing strategy than a customer telling other shippers, brokers and receivers how great your service is. Schneider expands service, pleasing customers and giving drivers more local driving opportunities

The response by chemical shippers to Schneider’s bulk intermodal service since its launch has been overwhelming. In just the first six months of this year, load volumes increased 75%. George Grossardt, senior vice president and general manager of Schneider’s bulk division, says the company is already planning to double the size of its bulk intermodal fleet and to expand its service coverage to all of North America. “The sharp rise in demand for this service can be attributed to the benefits it provides chemical shippers,” Grossardt says. “By eliminating any transloading and by streamlining border crossings, we are able to move shipments in days instead of weeks, addressing the growing concern of having reliable capacity. The combination of trucking and rail service is very effective for customers because it gives them a largely unconstrained, long-haul liquid bulk capacity option.” Grossardt also notes that some shippers were concerned that conversion from truckload to intermo-

dal would result in service delays, but this is proving to be unfounded. “Our network of 14 strategically located intermodal ramps, consistent rail schedules, and alliances with five of the major rail companies serving North America allows for most shipments to reliably arrive within 24 hours of the time it would take for the load to move over the road,” he states. “Truckload plus one day is very doable for most chemical shippers.”

DRIVERS BENEFIT Schneider’s bulk intermodal service is also a winning proposition in the ongoing race to attract and retain drivers. “As the driver market continues to tighten, chemical companies that move loads on the rails with Schneider bulk intermodal free up drivers for other loads,” Grossardt says. “For Schneider drivers, hauling loads from intermodal ramps means being home much more frequently. That leads to less driver turnover and makes it easier to recruit drivers who don’t want to be away for weeks at a time.”

Go to

Grossardt points out other benefits that are accruing for Schneider. Operating fewer over-the-road miles, for example, means safety is enhanced. Additionally, handling pickups and deliveries with the same drivers improves customer service and breeds familiarity, also driving a more positive safety scenario. Schneider’s bulk intermodal service uses 40-ft. single compartment tank trailers manufactured by CIMC Tank Equipment Co. The tanks are fitted with frames on each end that allow them to be stacked on rail cars. They are pulled by day cab tractors on the road using Hyundai chassis. Loaded units, at 11 ft., 5 in. high, can haul close to 48,000 lbs. of payload, which Grossardt notes allows customers to load 5% to 6% more product than in a traditional overthe-road truckload move. Looking ahead over the course of the next year, Schneider plans to expand the capacity and reach of its offering by adding tractors to its fleet along with additional intermodal loading ramps to accommodate shippers’ needs and serve even more markets. Schneider, headquartered in Green Bay, WI, fields 9,700 tractors, more than 30,000 trailers, and over 14,000 intermodal containers. Its operations cover 7.6 million road miles and 2.5 million rail miles per day across North America. “Schneider bulk intermodal complements the truckload, regional, long haul, expedited, dedicated, bulk, and van intermodal services the company as a whole offers,” says Grossardt. “Our sister van intermodal operation is one of the top three companies in that market and is also growing. Today, shippers that have come to count on Schneider for creative solutions can rely on us to meet their needs for long-haul bulk chemical shipments.” AT

The integration of data is helping ensure truckers are not left stranded waiting for parts

A

BY SEAN KILCARR, EDITOR

s technology continues to beef up the types and volume of data that can be extracted from trucks and trailers alike— largely in real-time—the way fleets and even dealerships manage parts is changing as well. Michael Riemer, vice president of products and channel marketing for Decisiv, notes that analyzing part costs is not solely about the hard numbers, i.e., prices, anymore. “You’ve got to ensure you have reliable and timely delivery of stock when needed because poor inventory fill rates will impact vehicle downtime and days out of service,” he says. “In other words, negotiating a great deal with a poor supplier may still be bad business in the end.” Yet gaining such delivery reliability hinges on more rapid dissemination of key data, something that OEMs such as Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks are trying to deliver via their onboard telematics systems (Mack GuardDog Connect and Volvo Remote Diagnostics, respectively). Both of those systems incorporate Decisiv’s Automated Service Initiation System, or ASIST, platform, which connects data collected by a truck’s telematics system together with an OEM’s call center, dealerships, and the fleet itself.

DATA-DRIVEN DECISIONS

“It’s a system whereby a fault code is analyzed based on severity, a repair plan is added to a case, and the call center, dealer and fleet are looped into a conversation and directed not just to the nearest loca-

tion but the location where they can be readily serviced and have the part or parts available,” explains Riemer. But such data-driven parts management isn’t only confined to the maintenance and repair process itself. Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), for instance, launched a new e-commerce parts platform back in June that is expected to be fully operational by February 2015. Dubbed Pinnacle Truck Parts, the company has not only simplified basic parts ordering for customers, it has made the process faster as well. An online ordering tool offers visibility to parts availability and pricing at local authorized DTNA retail outlets. Customers will have access to over 100,000 store keeping units, or SKUs, within the OEM’s national parts distribution center network. “After purchase, customers will have the option to immediately print a single invoice for the purchase of all of their parts,” notes Pam Perez, DTNA’s e-commerce project manager. “By utilizing this cross-reference parts database, customers will save time and money throughout the parts procurement process.” The key trend driving this change in parts management is centered around reducing vehicle downtime for fleets while at the same time giving dealers an opportunity to charge a premium if they can successfully minimize downtime for their customers, says Sandeep Kar, global director for automotive and transportation research at consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. “The value proposition of the dealership is evolving, and that

Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings

will change the very nature of truck sales,” he says. “In particular, we see a shift towards connectivity services through telematics that’s going to affect their aftermarket parts and maintenance services, which make up the biggest part of the dealership’s business.” A recent Class 8 dealership study conducted by Frost & Sullivan found that parts, service and maintenance will be a pillar of dealership revenue growth. Currently, these items contribute around 45% to 50% of profit, but that is expected to increase an additional 5% to 10% by the year 2020.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Even the aftermarket side of the truck and trailer parts business will be affected by this data-demand trend, argues Craig Frohock, president of the aftermarket and trailer business at Meritor. “Fleets have discovered the total cost of a parts purchase—sourcing, inventory requirements, order processes and shipping costs—and more than ever are demanding greater support before and after the sale,” he says. Frohock stresses that just as OEMs strive to maximize performance and minimize downtime, the aftermarket must also deliver service parts in a speedy, if not anticipatory, mind-set that aligns onhand parts inventory with immediate needs. “This alignment is needed to hopefully limit a truck’s time in the service bay to 24-72 hours from the time of arrival,” he adds. “On top of that, more fleet operators have become comfortable with shopping and buying their parts on the Internet and often go online to make

American Trucker/September 2014 21

cover story

Keeping parts in stock is only one goal these days. Delivering them in a timely manner is just as important. comparisons. [So] whether looking for parts availability or learning and training tools, online information continues to play a greater role in the aftermarket.” Frohock notes that Meritor launched new wholesale outlets that deliver the right parts in four hours or less to synch with this trend. “Fleets can no longer wait one or two days to get a truck back on the road; the parts business has become a now business,” he points out. That philosophy is seeping into every facet of the parts business, even the remanufactured components segment, says Doug Wolma, general manager-worldwide operations for Meritor’s aftermarket division. “In aftermarket parts, including remanufactured components, availability is king,” he explains. “Truck operators are relying even more heavily on fast, reliable delivery and service as their wheels must be moving to make money and stay in business. [That’s why] having the part is only half the equation. Suppliers simply must deliver that part at the right time.” Taking all that data and then funneling it back into the vehicle

design process is the next step. “Through our telematics information and repair data from the dealership, we can take all the data we’re gathering by model and specs

Fleets spend more time searching online to find the best parts availability and prices. and give that back to the engineering staff so they can analyze it and develop better products,” says Stephen Roy, president of North American sales & marketing, Mack Trucks. “That way we can eventually offer better

22 American Trucker/September 2014

optimized specs and components for specific customer applications based on actual data.” Telematics data is also being used to track the life expectancy of components, says Roy. “If a customer comes into a dealer for a repair, let’s say an overhaul, we can note that it would be time to change out other components to maximize that downtime so they don’t have to come back later,” he points out. For example, Roy notes that Mack worked with several customers who had reported turbocharger fault codes but only from high-altitude locations. By using data gleaned from the telematics systems on the affected trucks, Mack engineers determined it wasn’t a turbocharger issue but rather a sensor calibration issue. “We changed the software and prevented trucks being down for an unnecessary turbocharger replacement,” he emphasizes. “That’s a good example of data usage.” And that is one way data is influencing parts management as fleets look for more reliable trucks and when the need for repairs arises, quicker service.

Tips on maintaining air disc brakes

A

s U.S. fleets begin adding air disc brake (ADB) technology to their equipment, they’ll need to adjust maintenance practices. This is because the design of ADBs differs from that of the traditional drum brake systems used throughout the industry, notes Kevin Pfost, technical services coordinator for Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC. To that end, Bendix compiled a tip sheet regarding the maintenance and inspection process required when changing out ADB pads. ❑ First, prepping for an air disc brake pad change is simple in that the brakes are the same whether they are equipped on a steer, drive, or trailer axle. ❑ Second, the parking brake needs to be released or caged so that the axle rotates freely. ❑ Once the wheel is off, exposing the wheel-end, find and remove the cap covering the shear adapter on the brake caliper. ❑ Using a 10 mm socket wrench or a ratcheting box wrench on the adapter, turn the adjuster counterclockwise—a clicking noise indicates that the tappets are “backing off,” or loosening the pads’ grip on the brake rotor—until it stops. A chain connects the pair of tappets to extend and retract them simultaneously. “It’s important never to turn the adjuster without the shear adapter installed,” Pfost stresses. “The shear adapter is designed to fail in the event of over-tightening, preventing damage to the adjustment mechanism itself. The adjustment mechanism is not replaceable, so if it goes bad, the entire caliper will need to be replaced.” ❑ Once the shear adapter is fully backed off, the brake pads can be freed for removal. ❑ A retaining bar across the top of the brake pads holds them in place: Use a small pair of pliers to remove the spring clip from the pin fastening the retaining bar, then remove the washer from the pin as well. ❑ Push down on the retaining bar, pull out the pin, and remove the pad retaining bar. The two brake pads can now be lifted out from ei-

ther side of the rotor. At this point, Pfost says technicians should take a quick look at the pads, as the minimum friction thickness is about 2 mm—roughly the thickness of a nickel. Comparing the thickness of the old ADB pad with the new one provides a fleet with a quick glimpse of just how much usage it’s getting out of its ADB pads. Also, he stresses that technicians should conduct a preventive maintenance inspection before the new ADB pads are installed. ❑ Using the shear adapter, extend the tappets and inspect the tappet boots to make sure they are not damaged or contaminated with dirt, which can cause them to bind. ❑ Inspect the guide pin boots: Push the caliper all the way inboard to open up the boots and check them for damage and contamination. ❑ Look over the tappets, seals, and bushings. ❑ If components are damaged, use the brake manufacturer’s service data sheet to determine the correct repair kit to use, which should include the components as well as any special tools to ensure that new bushings are set at the proper depth. ❑ Note that slide pin lubrication is not re-

24 American Trucker/September 2014

quired. ADBs are lubricated for life and do not need grease fittings or oil spray as long as the components remain uncontaminated. When the inspection and any component replacements are complete, Pfost stresses that technicians must ensure the ADB’s tappets are fully backed off so they are flush and slide the new brake pads down into position. They will go in only one way: with the friction facing the rotor and the pad springs at the top. ❑ Once the new pad is installed, replace the pad retaining bar and fasten it in place with the pin, washer, and clip. ❑ With a 10 mm socket wrench or ratcheting box wrench, turn the shear adapter clockwise to adjust the tappets until the new pads make enough contact with the rotor to stop it from free-wheeling, then back it off—counterclockwise—three clicks. ❑ Replace the cap that covers the shear adapter, and the pad replacement is complete. “We recommend replacing the pads on the entire axle at the same time,” Pfost emphasizes. “A fresh set of friction across the board will ensure that each brake shares an equal part of the stopping workload, which is crucial for optimal safety and performance.” AT

Show ready

MANAGER: Hayden Eady TITLE: Professional driver & maintenance manager FLEET: Detroit Radiator Corp. OPERATION: Operating and maintaining a tractor trailer-based mobile trade show exhibit

O

ne of the ways Detroit Radiator Corp. (DRC) promotes its line of aftermarket products for heavy-duty trucks at trade shows and other public events around the U.S. is via a one-of-a-kind custom truck and trailer dubbed “Dr. Cool.” Crafted by Outcast Kustoms, Dr. Cool is a 1999 Kenworth model W900 tractor with a 475-hp. Caterpillar engine mated to a 13-speed manual transmission. The trailer serves as a rolling exhibit for DRC, showcasing its aftermarket cooling products.

PROBLEM

N

Since DRC puts Dr. Cool on the road to visit about 15 industry events a year, the company needed to hire someone on a part-time basis to drive the tractor-trailer and serve as its maintenance overseer and cleaning crew. That’s not necessarily an easy task with a tractor sporting over 1 million mi. on the odometer or when repairs are required during an exhibit stop. So DRC went looking for someone who could serve as a jack of all trades for Dr. Cool, someone capable of driving, maintaining, and ensuring that the truck would be spic and span come show time.

early two years ago, DRC came knocking on Hayden Eady’s door. Eady is a long-time DRC customer who runs his own maintenance shop in Alabama called Hayden’s Truck Repair. A third-generation truck driver and old school SOLUTION mechanic, Eady signed on to be pointman for Dr. Cool in November 2012 and quickly got to work. “I take time off from my own business to do this,” he explains. “The first thing I do is ensure the engine oil is changed every 15,000 mi.—no exceptions—and usually we conduct a full service at the same time as well.” Looking regularly for leaks, keeping the chassis greased and lubed properly, and using quality engine oils, coolants, etc., may cost a little more on the front end, but it helps preserve vehicle uptime in the long term. To prep Dr. Cool for a trade show or other public event, Eady first runs it through a commercial truck wash to get the bulk of the road dirt and grime off the vehicle. He then settles in with his own wash bucket and rags to clean out all the cracks and crevices. “That’s where road salt and other corrosive grime can

hide. You’ve got to get that off the chrome and metal,” Eady says. He even keeps an old toothbrush handy to get the dirt out of the tight spots. While all this might seem like overkill, Eady points out that keeping any tractor-trailer clean, much less one as eye-catching as Dr. Cool, tends to help avoid excessive attention from roadside inspectors. At a trade show, he’ll constantly wipe the truck down with a microfiber towel to remove fingerprints from the vehicle. “About 96% of my time at the Mid-America Trucking Show was spent cleaning fingerprints off the truck,” Eady says. “The hardest part is getting people to stop touching the truck.” Inside the cab, Eady is fastidious about vacuuming the floor carpets, hand-polishing the wood and chrome accents, and applying Armor All regularly to the seats and other upholstery. The regular use of Febreze helps eliminate odors from the cab, he adds. “I like to keep the truck as clean as I do my house,” he explains. “It’s also because it is my house when I am on the road.”

spotlight on an

BY TIMOTHY BRADY

What make of truck/trailer do you own? I own a 2012 Peterbilt 389 and a 2010 Trail King RGN.

What freight do you haul? Construction, mining and farm equipment.

How are maintenance/minor repairs handled? What do you do yourself, or by a shop? I handle most maintenance and minor repairs myself. Also, some are handled at my son’s shop or Valley Transportation’s shop.

What three challenges do you face with your maintenance/ repair program? How do you resolve each?

Valley Transportation Owner: Clifford Ellis Location: Grand Meadow, MN Clifford Ellis has been driving trucks for nearly 44 years. Currently leased to Valley Transportation, Ellis hauls mostly overdimensional loads.

What are your service mileage intervals?

If I do go to an OEM shop that’s not on my trusted list, I watch what they’re doing and keep track of the time they’re working on my truck. I’ll only pay for time they spend on my truck, not when they’re doing something on another truck. I only have done what’s needed and if it’s under warranty.

What do you do regarding maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime? When I see something that needs to be fixed, I fix it. I service according to the OEM’s maintenance schedule of time or mileage, whichever occurs first. When I get home, my son pulls the truck into his shop and services and checks everything, including connecting to the computer and getting a printout of what’s happening internally in the engine. I change out my brake linings before they get too thin. I reline the brakes once, and the next time everything’s replaced—brake linings, S-cams, slack adjusters and seals. The drive line is checked and if the U-joints have any play, they’re replaced. All electrical connections are done with heat-shrink connectors to minimize corrosion. I

28 American Trucker/September 2014

run all LED lights on both tractor and trailer. The gear oil is changed every 200,000 mi. for the transmission and rear ends. I touch up paint on the frame when I see bare metal or rust. The whole underside is pressurewashed and repainted once a year. Air lines are checked every week and when serviced, if any have any rubbing on them, they’re replaced. Staying on top of preventive maintenance beyond oil changes and grease jobs is what will minimize downtime. When I started driving a truck, I was told, “Oil is cheap; metal costs.”

Go to

I grease every 5,000 mi. and change oil every 15,000 mi. I use a fuel tank cleaner in my fuel (because of the biofuel blends) to keep the algae under control.

What do you enjoy most about trucking and hauling the type of freight you do? I enjoy hauling the stuff we haul. We’re treated with respect at 95% of the places we go to. I’m parked every night when hauling overdimensional loads, since most states won’t allow oversize loads to run at night. When my late wife was riding with me, we’d rent a car and go sightseeing if we had to sit over a weekend. In 44 years I’ve been in 49 of the 50 states and most of Canada. I’ve pulled everything but a reefer. I enjoy hauling heavy equipment the most. Editor’s Note: The purpose of “Spotlight on an American Trucker” is to bring our readership to life, by putting names and faces alongside their successes. Oil filters W

ith today’s diesel engine designs focused on emissions and fuel economy, one focus of oil filtration products is to keep close-tolerance engine components contaminant-free for long life, notes David Cline, oil filtration product manager at Parker Racor. “All of the technology that is available on the engine to meet the strict regulations on exhaust emissions simply adds more trash to the crankcase,” he says. “Earlier engines relying on exhaust gas recirculation to control emissions certainly had an impact on the soot load in lube oil,” Cline adds. “Though in-cylinder technology has allowed for some reduction in soot load, higher engine temperatures and a cap on TBN (total base number) due to the use of diesel particulate filters have reduced the life of the oil in some cases. The industry today is looking to filter media development to resolve these conditions.” Cline relates that Parker Racor has created oil filtration products designed to improve system life, boost efficiency, and meet standards for emissions compliance. “The approach in our ECO cartridge lube filtration products allows for media development coupled with multiple functions in one module,” he explains. “Unlike in the past, where a majority of lube filters were made from pleated cellulose media in a steel spin-on can, our direction is to use engineered media in a top load cartridge to meet today’s lube filtration needs. We also incorporate secondary lube filtration for even finer filtration and a reduction in moisture, particulate and soot.” Veli Kalayci, manager-engine liquid products at Donaldson, says that as today’s engines are asked to do more than in the past, today’s lube oils perform multiple tasks as well. “Expectations for performance and quality have increased,” he says. “Today’s filters are called on to separate and contain finer levels of contaminant in hotter engine oil for extended periods of operation. “To provide engine protection and maintain today’s higher oil cleanliness standards, lube filters capture wear metals, soot and contaminants from the engine oil,” Kalayci states. “When used in combination with extended life oils and effective maintenance practices, the synthetic media, the type of seal elastomer, and other design choices for these products can add up to longer

filter life and better engine protection.” In order to address the demands of today’s engines, explains Kalayci, Donaldson Blue lube filters keep engine oil clean by capturing contaminants that can cause damage. The extended service filters with the manufacturer’s Synteq media operate longer between service intervals by removing greater amounts of fine contaminant and delivering increased contaminant holding capacity compared to standard cellulose media. Luber-finer’s newest line of filter solutions includes the Time Release Technology (TRT) oil filter that employs a controlled release of a specially formulated, highly concentrated liquid additive into the oil. The TRT filter helps oil maintain its quality longer, the company says, because the additive is released only when it is needed. Puradyn Filter Technologies says its XD additive oil filtration system removes solid contaminants to below 1 micron as well as water and gaseous contaminants.
