Capacity club Capacity is tight out there in the world of freight—and it’s only going to get tighter in the months and years ahead. So, now may be the time to lay down the law on the injurious things shippers and receivers do to trucking’s bottom line. Paul Newbourne, senior vice presiIt’s time for dent of logistics operations for Armada Supply Chain Solutions, talked earlier carriers to crack this year about how some carriers are down and take now wielding the “capacity club” to protect their wallets. the gloves off “Many carriers have become much more sophisticated in how they operate,” he said. “They have a better understanding of their cost to serve a client’s business. Many of our carriers, including a number of the industry’s name brands, have told us that they are starting to become much more selective in the clients and freight they choose to handle.” Newbourne also noted that in one particular case, a major carrier told him that they were pulling away from what the trucking company called “a very sizeable account” because of the detrimental impact the operating practices of that account had on the efficiency of their fleet. Those aren’t new feelings, of course. Carriers and drivers alike have long lamented the impact caused by unreasonable shipper and receiver demands. But now the gloves may truly be coming off. AT

Used-truck support program launches

A

s part of its strategy to help rebuild U.S. heavytruck market share, Navistar is launching “Diamond Renewed,” a used-truck refurbishment program for modelyear 2010 and newer International LoneStar, ProStar and TranStar models powered by MaxxForce EGR engines with up to 450 hp. and fewer than 400,000 mi. David Gerrard, Navistar’s senior vice president of distribution, explained that the Diamond Renewed program seeks to capitalize on growing demand for late-model, lowmileage used trucks. “Our customers are operating on very tight lines,” said Gerrard, who spent a long career in the LTL segment of the industry before joining a Chicago-based Navistar dealer for five years before moving over to the OEM. The Diamond Renewed program takes advantage of what Gerrard referred to as the “sweet spot” for used trucks: Class 8 models that cost $50,000 less than a new unit yet come with enhanced options in order to better support vehicle uptime. In short, he said the program aims to provide used-truck customers with a “new truck experience.” Navistar’s efforts in the used-truck market align with continued strong demand. According to data tracked by ACT Research Co., the volume of used Class 8 trucks sold in June rose 10% above the volume in May. In terms of the particulars for the Diamond Renewed program, eligible used trucks are refurbished at

The program covers ProStar, TranStar and LoneStar models with MaxxForce EGR engines. Navistar’s Used Equipment Reconditioning Center in Indianapolis following a 180-point vehicle and engine inspection process. Refurbishment includes cleaning or replacing diesel particulate filters and diesel oxidation catalysts, EGR calibration software updates, checking and repairing brake systems, conducting major body repair, painting frame rails, and more. To date, the company said it has reconditioned 1,200 units to its Diamond Renewed standards. Next, Navistar will provide what it calls its “System 1 Confidence” OEM factory-backed warranty coverage for up to 2 yrs./200,000 mi. The coverage also includes EGR components. Finally, the OEM said Diamond Renewed reconditioned trucks with its OnCommand Connection monitoring system provide a remote diagnostics portal so customers can access real-time fault codes, truck and dealer locations, vehicle health reports, and fault code action plans. Navistar plans to sell its Diamond Renewed trucks through its International Used Truck Centers and its —SEAN KILCARR dealer network.

Pay attention to drivers M

ega-carriers are scrambling for drivers right now. So, if you have great drivers in your small fleet, count that as a blessing and make it a priority to keep them. Here’s a tip you may not have thought of: Find out what pastime or hobby your drivers enjoy during their time off. Don’t know? Ask. Listen. Incorporate these types of questions on future applications. Now grab your dispatcher and driver, and plan far enough ahead to get a load through the host city of a major event involving that interest. Does she like filming hot air balloon events? Albuquerque has its International Balloon Fiesta every year in October. Would he give his eyeteeth to be in Talladega, AL, on race day? How about a bowling tournament, or the Sturgis hog rally in South Dakota? Before retiring, one well-known driver’s hobby was organizing an annual barbecue open to all truckers at both MATS and GATS. If your driver can get to a dream event or celebration, don’t you think your carrier would stay on that driver’s “good working environment” list? And you wouldn’t be spending thousands of dollars either securing a new driver or going back on the road yourself. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Biofuel conversion system given okay

O

ptimus Technologies has received U.S. EPA approval for its advanced biofuel conversion solution. The approval covers the use of pure biofuel derived from recycled cooking oil. The system reduces fleet fuel costs up to 25% and reduces lifecycle emissions up to 80% without the startup costs associated with compressed natural gas, the company said. The solution is based on a combination of the Optimus Vector bi-fuel (diesel or biofuel) conversion system and biofuel that is certified and pure. The Vector system was approved for use on model-year 2004 and 2006 Navistar DT466 engines. Field trials and certification tests on other engines are currently underway. www.optimustec.com

Gator tales

E

Even though the peak “gator” season is coming to an end, the issue of tire debris on the side of the road is not going away. When people find out I’m in the tire business, too many of them still want me to “do something about all of the retreads on the side of the road.” My typical response is that the tire debris they see on the highway is not a retread issue. It’s more of an inflation pressure and heat problem that can cause any Data tire to come apart. Unfortunately, most continues people don’t want to hear that. They are convinced to point to that I’m just another corporate spokesman trying to retread safety pull the wool over the eyes of unsuspecting motorists. In their opinions, if the government would just ban retreads, then the problem would be solved. Fortunately, the Tire Retread and Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) released a new video that should answer most of the questions regarding tire debris. “Rubber on the Road” is a quick nine-minute look at the facts and is focused on a 2008 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The “Commercial Medium Tire Debris Study” examined 300 casings and 1,196 tire fragments from five Interstate highway locations across the country. Based on the forensic analysis from industry experts, the study concluded that about 57% were original tread tires and only 43% were retreads. More importantly, the top three reasons for failure were road hazards (32%), maintenance/operational factors (30%), and over-deflected operation (14%). Less than 10% of all the casings collected showed any manufacturing conditions that contributed to the tire failing

while in service. And of the 1,196 tire fragments that were collected, the top two reasons for removal were road hazard (39%) and excessive heat (30%). It’s also important to note that the NHTSA study did not collect or analyze any roadside tire debris related to passenger and light truck tires. I travel about 80 mi. of Interstate highway each day and have seen countless cars, pickups and SUVs on the shoulder with shredded tires. The Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) conducted surveys of rubber on the road in 1995 and 1998; all of the debris was collected and analyzed. TMC reported that more than one-third of the samples were attributed to passenger and light truck tires. Public opinion is incredibly difficult to change, so organizations like TRIB continue to reinforce the message that tire inflation pressure maintenance and inspection are the best methods for preventing tire debris on the highways. “Rubber on the Road” is just one of several videos that focuses on data rather than anecdotal observations or biased opinions of the uninformed. The facts say retreads are safe, economical and environmentally friendly. Of course, safety pundits will continue to pollute the airwaves and the Internet with their “expertise.” They’ll focus on a couple of isolated instances where tire debris resulted in a serious or fatal accident to make their point. And they’ll conveniently overlook the fact that less than 1% of all crashes involve a defective tire. Despite the efforts of TRIB, some motorists will never stop complaining about gators because they are easily influenced by segments of the media that don’t want to let the facts get in the way of a good story. Automatic help Transmission choice leads to improved efficiency and reduced costs for Indiana firm

L

Like many fleets, Yoder, IN-based Bailey Trucking has faced the challenges associated with replacing older vehicles in its fleet. “In the past, we would trade in or sell about 10 trucks every year and purchase new models as replacements,” says Jerry Bailey, owner. “However, the ongoing series of diesel engine emissions standards has been steadily increasing the cost of new units. These days, we’re keeping trucks longer than we ever have before and in some cases opting to have engines rebuilt. “The cost of fuel is also impacting our cash flow,” Bailey continues. “We use about a tanker load of fuel every three days, and the cost of fuel has tripled since 2007. A load that cost $11,000 before now runs more than $30,000, and in many cases, we have just 15 days to pay for the fuel instead of the 30-day terms we had previously.” Jerry Bailey has been in the construction fleet business long enough to see those changes and the impact they have on his company. He founded the company that bears

his name in 1981 with four trucks. Today, Bailey Trucking operates 55 Freightliner, Sterling, Volvo and Kenworth tri- and quad-axle trucks with 15-yd. dump bodies. The fleet hauls stone, sand, gravel, asphalt and other construction commodities for homebuilders, general contractors, and asphalt companies within about 50 mi. of Ft. Wayne. Looking for fuel savings led Bailey to consider changing specifications on new trucks he has been buying. “We’re longtime users of manual and torque-converted automatic transmissions,” he explains, “but when we placed an order for new Freightliner trucks last year, we decided to take a look at the new Eaton UltraShift Plus automated manual transmission. After just six months, the fuel economy that we are getting, compared to the torque converter trucks, was 1.5 mpg better. With 55 trucks, that can add up to significant savings.” Eaton UltraShift Plus automated transmissions complete all launches and shifts with a self-adjusting electronic actuator. The transmissions

in Bailey’s fleet are a part of the Vocational Construction Series (VCS), all of which have an overall ratio of 20:1, deep reduction gearing, and multiple high-speed reverse gears for extended backing operations. Bailey also cites significantly less wear on tires as another area where he feels the automated gearboxes are helping reduce costs. “We use only premium Bridgestone and Continental tires,” he relates, “but while automatic transmissions have torque applied constantly to the tires, the UltraShift Plus frees up the wheels whenever you’re shifting gears. As a result, we’re seeing about 15% longer tire life with the Eaton transmissions.” Bailey also believes the automated transmissions contribute to safer vehicle operation compared to manual gearboxes because their design allows drivers to have two hands on the wheel at all times. “At some job sites, we have to bring stone and sand into places that you might not be able to get to easily,” he adds. “Not shifting all the time puts less stress on drivers.” Less stress on trucks is also one of Bailey’s goals. To eliminate worries about breakdowns, he notes, all of the fleet’s units are spec’d with the heaviest (rated) rear axles, suspensions, and other components available. Complementing that is a comprehensive preventive maintenance program at the Bailey Trucking shop and a local network of dealers for repairs and other major work. “We’re all about pleasing the customer and our drivers by getting in and out of jobsites as quickly and as safely as possible,” Bailey states. “With the right specs, we can face tough operating conditions and rising fuel and operating costs very effectively.” AT

Craft plans to find new freight to protect against a slowdown Developing alternate, profitable freight requires an understanding of the dynamics of what freight is moving in which direction during which periods of a month, quarter and year in each of your current freight lanes. The freight that’s

16 American Trucker/October 2014

available to haul at the time that it’s needed is what is most important. The objective is to have other hauling opportunities in place for when a current shipper either reduces or eliminates freight within your current lane. Before you begin the process of finding alternate freight opportunities, be sure to review your hauling rate range to know that your revenue requirements will be met. s a trucking operation, you can’t assume everything will remain as it is currently within your freight lanes. It’s very important to have alternative freight sources in place for when a load cancels or is delayed, or when a shipper suddenly stops doing business with your company. To avert an unexpected slowdown in freight and a reduction in revenue and cash flow, you need to constantly review your freight lanes. One of the best ways to keep your trucks and revenue rolling is having back-up freight in your established lanes.

existing lanes: T Determine your best originating freight location. Many times this will be your home base. The reason is because home is where you know the territory the best, where you’re more likely to know a principle owner or general manager of a manufacturer or distribution center. You can develop a direct-ship relationship, one that doesn’t require the involvement of a broker. T Make a list of local manufacturers and distribution centers within a 50-100 mi. radius of your home base. Be sure to include contact information and names of people in the shipping and receiving departments. T Contact each one and ask to be placed on their “approved carrier” list. Keep in mind that not all will accommodate you; however, the ones that do are the ones you’ll start working with to develop the first leg of your freight lane. Being placed on an approved carrier list by a shipping customer means they will send you an RFP (request for proposal) either via email or fax that will be based on the freight and destination criteria you provide them. This is why it’s important to have a hauling rate range established. T Find out who to contact at the companies that won’t put you on an approved carrier list. These are usually freight brokers or 3PLs that handle shipment scheduling. Call the 3PLs and brokers to get on their lists. The idea here is to garner a large list of available freight going out of your home area. T Once on the approved carrier lists for these companies, most will require you to provide the lanes in which your trucks operate and the type of freight you can haul. Some will require your hauling rates for

the criteria and lanes you’ve listed. To figure out your rates and what will work best for what they have to offer, ask the following questions: To which areas does the shipper have the most problems getting truckers to haul? T Once armed with this information, do the necessary research to figure if you’re a match for them. What is the availability of freight coming out of these areas? How frequently are loads available from the locations to which they’re having difficulty getting carriers to haul? Is it a dead freight area with very little freight available (which usually means very low freight rates for returning freight)? If so, you’ll need to quote a higher rate that covers your deadhead miles to the nearest location to find decent-paying freight. A low truck-to-load ratio in an area means a higher rate for inbound freight. T To know what rate is required, look in an ever-widening circle out

from the low rate or no freight area until you find freight that fits into your carrier’s established hauling rate range. That will provide you with the distance and time requirements to establish your hauling rate from your home base to the low outbound freight destination, and then to the location at which you load profitable return freight. T Follow the same procedure when looking at all available freight going to different destinations to find what will work in conjunction with the outbound freight or as a stand-alone outbound load. It may require the development of one or more additional freight legs within your freight lane to generate the required revenue to make the lane profitable. T Take a look at the services the other carriers are not providing to the shippers, brokers and 3PLs and see if you can provide those services. Determine whether it would require an increase in what you charge to haul the freight or if you could do it as a value-added service at no charge, making you a far more valuable carrier. T Finally, locate alternate freight for each of your trucks that maintains the integrity of each one’s current freight lane. Remember, it’s the combined revenue from all the legs of each truck’s freight lane that’s needed to achieve the necessary profit. While you may have a few legs that are low revenue, it’s the grouping of all legs of a freight lane and their associated revenue that determine its profitability. The custom truck may be the ultimate business card

A

B Y S E A N K I LC A R R, E D I TO R

fter pumping tens of thousands of hardearned dollars and countless worker-hours into crafting one-of-a-kind custom truck creations, such vehicles should be parked in a nice garage so neither the elements nor the hazards of the road could even hope to leave the barest trace of harm upon such gleaming works of art. Such is the opinion of many folks, but not that of Bill Rethwisch of Tomah, WI. He’s got seven such highly customized rigs on the road at work every day hauling and delivering gasoline and other petroleum products into places where road grime plus exposure to dings and dents are a commonplace occurrence. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“When we pull into a customer’s location, we stand out,” Rethwisch explains. “We stand out to the point where families at the gas station go get their kids to see our equipment up close, rather than quickly hustle them away to their cars.” Yet the business dividends from investing in such sharp highway iron far outweigh the public relations benefits, he believes. “I’ve got 11 drivers working for me who just love driving these trucks,” Rethwisch says. “It makes them feel good about their jobs and gives them a great sense of pride in their profession. So many trucks today on the road are all dingy and dirty, and that image masks the hard work so many drivers perform every day.” Detroit Radiator Corp.

ONE OF A KIND Rethwisch’s custom trucks aren’t run-of-the-mill glamorous either. His green and white 2013 Peterbilt 389 took “Best of Show” honors at the 32nd Annual Shell Rotella Super-

Rigs competition in May held in Concord, NC. His orange and white 2012 Peterbilt 389 nabbed the top award at the 2013 SuperRigs event, one of the few back-to-back winners in SuperRigs competition history. But at the end of the day, what really matters is how the “high style” of Rethwisch’s highway creations helps him forge deeper and longer-lasting relationships with customers. “When they see our trucks pull into their location, they know that they don’t have to worry about whether our drivers will put the wrong fuel in the wrong tank,” he explains. “They know that the same level of care we take in our equipment translates to the products we’re hauling for them; it gives them peace of mind,” Rethwisch stresses. “That pride in our work shows in how our equipment looks and the attitude of our drivers—and our customers love that.” Those same themes are in play even when the customers are fleets and independent truck owners as well.

“Not only is it a great way to promote our products, but it shows we are trucking people too and that we take the same pride in our equipment that our customers do,” says David Bitel, general manager for Detroit Radiator Corp. (DRC). Several years ago, DRC worked with Outcast Kustoms, a one-of-akind chrome shop and collision repair facility located in Mooresville, NC, to turn a 53-ft. trailer into a mobile display for its radiator products. The trailer would not only transport the company’s wares to trucking trade shows across the U.S., but would also play a key role in its marketing efforts. Randy Pruitt, CEO of DRC, felt that using a randomly hired truck to pull the company’s display from show to show took away from the “visual effect” due to the mismatching colors, decal designs, etc.

A “COOL” CREATION So, DRC went back to Outcast Kustoms and had them create “Dr. Cool” (seen at left), a 1999 Kenworth model W900 tractor with a 475hp. Caterpillar engine mated to a 13-speed manual transmission that now serves alongside the company’s trailer to showcase DRC’s aftermarket cooling products. “This tractor-trailer allows us to take our actual products out into the market to our customers so they can see them and touch them,” Pruitt explains. “We’re not showing catalog pictures or cutouts; we’re bringing actual radiators to these shows.” On top of that, DRC usually packs a variety of games into the display trailer. “That brings the

Rethwisch’s green and white 2013 Peterbilt 389 took top honors at Shell’s 2014 SuperRigs show … families into the booth, where they inevitably take pictures of their kids with Dr. Cool,” he points out. Today, the entire Dr. Cool rig— tractor and trailer—visits about 15 industry events a year, with a good many of them charity events. The rig has been driven and cared for by Hayden Eady since November 2012. He shuts down Hayden’s Truck Repair, his maintenance business, when piloting Dr. Cool. DRC’s Bitel feels that the company’s specialized tractor-trailer often offers more than just brand recognition. “Dr. Cool really serves as a 53ft. rolling business card, but not just to promote our products,” Bitel ex-

plains, noting that in 2013, Dr. Cool hauled water and emergency supplies to areas in Central Oklahoma hit hard by a swath of tornados. “It’s all part of showing that we are part of the trucking community; that we take pride in the care and maintenance of our equipment just like our customers do,” he says.

THE PAYOFF Pruitt emphasizes that “part of the trucking community” belief isn’t corporate hype either. “Once we had a bit of a catastrophe—the brakes on our trailer kept locking up on a trip between shows,” he explains. “Three different times

at night the brakes locked up. And three separate times, a repair guy— a different person each time—came out in the middle of the night and fixed the problem for free.” According to Pruitt, that demonstrates how putting a customized truck to work paid off for DRC in but one of many unexpected ways. “Each time, they told us they appreciated what we were doing, going out and supporting the industry with a highprofile rig like Dr. Cool,” he says. “Don’t get me wrong. It takes a lot of work to keep a truck like this in tip-top shape on the road,” Pruitt adds. “But the impact we get from it for our business is dramatic.”

… while his orange and white 2012 Peterbilt 389 won the top award at the 2013 SuperRigs event.

Custom truck trends and tips

B

ryan Martin, owner of 4 States Trucks in Joplin, MO, but more famously known as the “Bossman” of his company’s Chrome Shop Mafia (CSM) operation, has seen more than his fair share of custom truck trends come and go over the years. Yet one thing Martin says that’s been relatively consistent about the custom truck business is that 92% of projects CSM gets are for “working trucks,” i.e., rigs expected to be on the road 40 to 50 weeks out of a year and exposed to all the indignities man and nature can throw at them. “That’s why we always advise a customer not to create a design that turns out to be so fragile that it takes lots of energy to keep up,” he explains. Another custom truck trend that’s stayed stable over the decades is a focus on moderate upgrades that entail what Martin calls “a clean, classy look”focused largely on continuous color palettes for the engine hood, cab, fuel tanks, battery boxes, and even frame rails. “We get a lot of guys in here who own a handful of trucks and want to create a ‘flagship’ rig for their operation, one they can take to shows and other events as their rolling business card,” he says. “They typically aren’t looking for radical designs. Rather, they want something that makes a good impression when it pulls onto a shipper’s lot. It’s about creating a positive image for their operation.”

Based on his long experience creating a host of different custom truck designs, Martin also has a few tips for those thinking about crafting a new look for their rigs. First and foremost, make sure you can afford the cost of the custom build and the vehicle downtime associated with it. “You need to stick to your budget, changing your design to fit your budget if need be,” he stresses. “You also need to account for the time you’ll be without your truck.” Martin also emphasizes that any modification be practical and fit the environment the truck is expected to operate in. “For example, if

22 American Trucker/October 2014

you go off-road, low-slug fuel tanks and fenders are probably not a good idea,” he says. “If you operate in residential areas, big 13-ft.-tall exhaust stacks might not work too well.” Simplicity is a key attribute largely overlooked in the custom truck design process, Martin points out, not just for saving money. “There are just amazing things you can do with paint and lights alone,” he explains. “Things like ground-effect lighting, flip bumper kits, and a tasteful yet functional sun visor can really enhance the look of your truck without breaking the bank.” AT Bryan Martin says practicality and simplicity are key to custom truck design.

Education process MANAGER: Pat Mitchell TITLE: Director of transportation FLEET: Mobile County Public Schools, Mobile, AL OPERATION: A 1,500-unit fleet with a mix of school buses (740 in all), cars and light trucks

S

witching to an alternative fuel always poses challenges for any fleet operation. When you are responsible for ensuring the safe transport of 26,000 school children on a daily basis, there is increased importance to addressing those challenges, says Pat Mitchell. So when Mobile County Public Schools (MCPS), Alabama’s largest school district, decided to acquire 30 propane-powered Blue Bird school buses equipped with Roush CleanTech fuel systems as opposed to diesel, vehicle safety took precedence. “We had to establish first and foremost that propane

buses would be as safe if not safer than our diesel buses,” explains Mitchell, now in his fourth year serving as director of transportation for MCPS. “We took a year and one-half performing our due diligence, getting buy-in from our superintendent, the school board, and our drivers,” he says. “We did an awful lot of homework to sell them all on the safety of these buses. [Because a lot of eyes are watching us], we needed to prove the children would be safe.” There was another issue to deal with as well: completing the changeover with little to no disruption.

itchell’s career includes 21 years in law enforcement, rising from beat cop to assistant police chief. Safety concerns were the first to be addressed, he says. Once MCPS surpassed the vehicle safety hurdle, the cost savings came into play. “We had to show that not only would we be saving money, but that money would go back to the classrooms,” Mitchell stresses. That proved relatively easy, especially with propane costing $1.20 to $1.30/gal. compared to $3.40/gal. for diesel. For a fleet spending $3 million to $4 million on fuel, that fuel price differential meant a lot more money would indeed be going back to the classroom. Making a smooth switch to propane buses then became a top priority for Mitchell. He did not want drivers and parents alike to resist the use of these buses. So, in order to avoid any problems in the first few days of operation, he hit upon the idea of making a video highlighting the particular needs of propane bus care and operation. In this way, he could broadly educate MCPS’s fleet personnel and follow up with hands-on training. “Propane buses operate a little differently than our

M

diesel units,” he stresses. “For example, the engine doesn’t turn over immediately after you turn the ignition key. You need to turn it to the ‘on’ position, wait for a cycle, and then the engine starts on its own.” Refueling MCPS’s propane buses also posed its own set of idiosyncrasies, as the refueling port cap and door cover have to be closed tightly or the engine will not start. “That’s a safety feature,” Mitchell says, noting that Blossman Gas, the school district’s propane fuel provider, brought propane refueling equipment to the hands-on demonstration site to help train MCPS’s fleet personnel. Mitchell adds that he went to such lengths in order to ensure that when those propane buses hit the road for their first week of operation, MCPS’s 30 mechanics weren’t making road calls for such issues. “These propane buses are so similar in style to gasoline-powered units that it was never a stretch for our mechanics to learn how to maintain them,” he emphasizes. That’s why MCPS focused its propane education effort on troubleshooting small issues that could potentially leave a bus, and children, stranded on the side of the road.

APUs T

here’s no question that engine idling has a measurable impact on a fleet’s operating costs; by some accounts, every hour of idle time can decrease fuel efficiency by 1%. For some fleets, the answer is an auxiliary power unit (APU). In comparison, an APU that provides heat, cooling and electricity can use an estimated 0.1 to 0.3 gals. of fuel per hour compared to 1 gal. or more an hour for an idling truck engine. “Fleets can evaluate whether they can benefit from an APU by looking at their operation, including routes and the number of nights a driver uses the sleeper,” says Keith Bentz, president of Crosspoint Solutions, a subsidiary of Cummins Crosspoint that offers the ClimaCab batterypowered APU. “Today as well, hours-of-service rules and regulations that limit idling to reduce emissions and noise, as well as driver retention issues, have made cab and sleeper comfort important considerations.” The Idle Reduction Solutions Confidence Report by the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) details the advantages and disadvantages, functionality, driver controls, and service and maintenance issues for 19 categories of idle reduction solutions, including diesel- and battery-powered APUs. “The initial costs of APUs are higher than some other anti-idling solutions but can be offset by fuel savings, reduced engine wear, and maintenance costs,” the report states. The report goes on to note that APUs typically weigh between 300 and 600 lbs. and with installation can cost from $8,500 to $13,000. Installation can take from five to 24 hours depending on shop expertise and the complexity of the APU design. Additionally, diesel-fired APUs require basic maintenance while battery-powered APUs need little to no maintenance, but wiring and hose connections should be checked. The ClimaCab battery-powered APU provides 8,000 Btu/hr. of cooling in sleepers on Class 8 trucks, can be used with optional fuel-fired auxiliary heaters from Espar and Webasto, and configured to provide electrical power.
