Standard & Poor’s reported the government shutdown shaved at least 0.6% off of annualized fourth-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth this year, taking an estimated $24 billion out of the U.S. economy. Eli Lustgarten, senior vice president of economics with Longbow Securities, expects GDP growth of 2% to 2.5% for 2013 and 2014. But that was before the long-term Freight growth impact of the shutdown and another potential Congressional showdown in continues to wait January is factored in. Slow growth for sure. Still, the U.S. on Washington remains “the best house in a lousy neighborhood,” he says. “I’m actually very optimistic for the next three to five years, but that’s if we can survive the next 12 to 18 months.” And, at this point, that remains a big question. Can the political parties put aside their differences and come up with a plan that moves the economy forward? “The reason why Washington, D.C., is the way it is right now is we are arguing about who gets less in the future, not who gets more,” explains Noel Perry, senior consultant with research firm FTR. We are in a political climate where the conversation increasingly centers around program cuts rather than economic growth. Left to its own devices, the economy, and therefore freight volumes, would likely grow over time, but can the politicians allow that to happen? Will we lift the value of the other houses in the neighborhood? We can only wait and see. AT

Gliding into natural gas

Bank on it T

F

leet owners and independent drivers who have wanted to give natural gas trucks a try but found the price of entry a little too steep have a new option to consider: a glider kit that comes with a natural gas conversion package for older engines. Ervin Equipment announced that the company has expanded its product line to include glider kits that come with American Power Group’s (APG) turbocharged natural gas dual-fuel upgrade system. The first glider models available will be for Freightliner Coronado and Columbia chassis, powered with a rebuilt Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine that has been remanufactured with APG’s system to run on natural gas (ignited with diesel) or diesel alone. APG, however, has EPA approvals for 208 engine families from model-year 2000 through 2009, with more on the way. The dual-fuel glider offering is new to the trucking industry, so APG, Ervin Equipment, Fitzgerald Glider Kits, WheelTime, and natural gas fuel provider Blu gave potential customers and members of the press a closer look at this new take on the traditional glider kit concept. Among the useful points shared by the presenters: ❑ Purchase price. A glider kit costs about 25% less than a comparable new diesel truck, according to APG. It consists of a new frame, cab, electrical system and front axle that is paired with rebuilt systems for two of three drivetrain components from

Glider kits are a way for truckers to take advantage of lower natural gas prices. an older vehicle—engine, transmission or rear axle to create a remanufactured vehicle. ❑ Net fuel savings. Net annual fuel savings of 20-30% are possible as compared to diesel. ❑ Maintenance savings. Because the engines currently being offered are pre-2007, they do not require diesel particulate filters or SCR. For companies that can still operate trucks equipped with these engines, this can mean a savings of 5¢ to 8¢ per mile, according to APG, as compared to a new diesel or dedicated natural gas truck. ❑ Maintenance cycles. Most maintenance cycles remain the same, although there are special shop requirements, especially concerning ventilation, that must be addressed for shops servicing natural gas-powered vehicles. ❑ Dual-fuel engine operation. Many users are confused by engines operating on dual-fuel systems. In the case of these engine conversions, the engine still operates on all-diesel during start-up and idling.

trucking insights

—WENDY LEAVITT

rucking is risky business. Just ask any owner of a small motor carrier. Equipment is expensive to buy and maintain; revenues are here one day, gone to a cheaper hauler the next; and the liability? Well, your drivers are one vehicle away from a lawsuit every time they’re on the road. But many people succeed in trucking. They’re the small motor carrier owners who’ve worked out a strategy to become “self-capitalized.” What’s that? A plan that answers two questions: Does your banker believe in your plan for success, and are you bankable? It isn’t only your credit rating or how you appear on a Dun & Bradstreet report that makes you bankable. It’s how much revenue your carrier produces against costs, what your accounts receivable look like, and the quality and diversity of your customers. Being bankable means carefully managing assets—cash, equipment, property, accounts receivable, customers, employees and contractors—with a multiple-part plan. Your plan for success includes being prepared for lean times and equipment breakdowns plus covering daily costs while waiting for customers to pay. You can’t let growth outrun hauling capacity, but you must build net worth. You owe it to your banker to plan for success. But above all, you owe it to yourself. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Veil lifted on mobility platform

I

nstead of re-engineering its existing technology to meet trucking’s growing use of telematics, PeopleNet is “innovating past it” with what it’s calling “a precision mobility platform.” The new platform will encompass the company’s in-cab hub, core back-end systems, and expanded analytics capabilities, according to chief technology officer Mark Botticelli. The platform will take advantage of public cloud computing and machine-to-machine (M2M) architecture to provide “rock-solid communications with low latency and more efficient use of bandwidth,” Botticelli told American Trucker. Communi-

cations between drivers and backoffice that now take minutes will be completed within a second or two, he said. The ability to access more data directly from a truck will also power a precision analytics engine offering greater operational intelligence and eventually even predictive analytics. The new in-cab hub component features 4G cellular communications fast enough to stream video and provide a WiFi wireless access point. Main applications will continue to be hosted in PeopleNet’s servers, but “mission critical data” will be stored in the public cloud with a service provider. Core functions of the platform

Circle 14 on reply card

are also decoupled so problems with one won’t impact driver and dispatch communications or other functions. And moving to an open web-based framework will allow the platform to more easily integrate with other fleet management systems and push data to other smart devices, Botticelli said. Advanced or precision analytics, the third component in the platform, are being developed with Vusion, a business unit of PeopleNet’s parent Trimble. The M2M architecture combined with the in-cab hub’s capabilities will expose more data that can be used for new perspectives on a fleet’s operations, Botticelli said. —JIM MELE

Off-balance

T

Technology has an ironic way of solving one set of problems while creating another. When bias ply tires and leaf spring suspensions dominated the trucking industry decades ago, drivers expected trucks to ride like trucks. I can still remember an entire summer of balancing tires for a school bus fleet because we eliminated a vibration for one driver. Word fast around Improper bead traveled the garage and within of improvseating leads to aingweek the ride, we had steady stream of tire problems adrivers with similar problems. Ride complaints have definitely changed over the years for a variety of reasons. Tubeless radial tires, airride suspensions, and aluminum wheels are just some of the components that have improved the experience in the driver’s seat. As a result, the expectations for a smooth ride behind the wheel have steadily risen so even the slightest vibration is no longer acceptable. When I was balancing bus tires as a technician, we used the traditional method of installing wheel weights to offset any imbalance. It could be incredibly timeconsuming and was rendered ineffective the moment a wheel or rim was removed from the vehicle. Computerized balancers eliminated the removal issue. One wheel weight is installed on a rim flange to offset the static imbalance, or hop, while another is installed on the opposite rim flange to offset the dynamic imbalance, or wobble. The basic technology hasn’t changed much over the years, but the equipment is definitely more sophisticated and more accurate than it was years ago. The latest entries in the truck tire balancing sweep-

stakes are internal balancing compounds, which are added to the interior of the tire. The principle here is that centrifugal force will force them to the outside and offset any imbalance. Traditional wheel weight methods balance the tire and wheel assembly at one particular point in time, but internal compounds are thought to continuously balance the tire throughout its lifespan. While each method has pros and cons, there is one point that is overlooked and ignored too often. If the tire is not concentrically seated on the rim, all of the balance and suspension technology on the planet cannot offset the constant variation in the rotating assembly. This is particularly important on steer axle tires, since even the slightest amount of non-concentricity can result in a ride disturbance and/or irregular treadwear pattern. Checking for concentric bead seating is easy. All you have to do is measure the distance between the edge of the rim and a molded rib on the lower sidewall of the tire. While the industry will allow up to a 2/32-in. variation in the distance, any variation will have a negative effect on the ride and treadwear. In most cases, the solution is simple. After deflating the tire and unseating the beads, the tire and rim should be lubricated with rubber lubricant and the beads should be reseated with the tire laying flat. Lack of lubricant, improper lubricant or seating the beads with the tire standing vertical are often the most common causes of non-concentrically seated beads. When properly mounted, installed and inflated, most truck tires should not require any additional balance. And while there are always exceptions, finding balance is not nearly as difficult as it used to be. AT

FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Right moves

Fleet makes choices to save fuel, environment

F

Food distribution has been the business of the Taddonio family for a very long time. It was 1901 when Michael Taddonio arrived in Denver and began selling fruits and vegetables from a horse-drawn cart. It was the 1940s when his children established Taddonio Brothers Produce with one truck. Soon after, Mile Hi Fruit & Vegetable was in business selling produce to restaurants and grocery stores. Tony Taddonio serves as CEO of the family-owned specialty food service company that supplies more than 300 national brand restaurants, making daily deliveries of food, paper and refrigerated products. The Mile Hi Foods distribution fleet, which numbers 75 tractors and 150 refrigerated trailers, serves customers and operates under separate 48-state authority as a contract carrier for backhauls. Today, the company faces several ongoing challenges, Taddonio notes. These include the need to find and retain qualified drivers, to meet customer demands driven in part by new food safety regulations, and to hold the

line against high and rising fuel costs while simultaneously making environmentally sound choices. “We’ve invested in technologies that help us better manage our operation,” Taddonio says. “Our tractors have XRS mobile technology platforms for vehicle tracking and communication and for monitoring performance parameters. Trailers are equipped with the ibright telematics system for location data and cargo temperature monitoring.” Recently, Mile Hi Foods received a Green Fleet Award from the Colorado Motor Carriers Assn. for its environmental efforts. The award cited the company’s use of Rocky Mountain doubles, its fleet of SmartWay-certified Peterbilt tractors, and its adoption of Carrier Transicold hybrid diesel-electric refrigeration units with electric standby capability. For the past three years, Mile Hi Foods has been spec’ing Carrier Vector 6600MT multi-temp and Vector 6500 single-temp models. The newest hybrid diesel-electric multi-temperature units have an all-electric refrigeration architecture in which

the diesel engine drives a generator that powers the compressor, fans and operating system. Carrier distributor CT Power of Commerce City, CO, installed wiring and receptacles on the trailers to enable connections to 460-volt AC electric plug-in receptacles placed at 17 loading docks and 20 freestanding locations in the company’s yard. “The Vector refrigeration units with electric standby capability can now run while they’re waiting to be dispatched without consuming fuel,” Taddonio says. “That has meant fuel cost, emissions and noise reduction benefits. In some cases, we’re realizing engine-on time reductions of as much as 21%, saving 1,800 gals. of fuel a month. At today’s diesel prices, that’s more than $85,000 in annual fuel savings and a payback on our infrastructure investment in less than one year.” Mile Hi Foods is also planning to be able to use each Vector unit on two trailers, double the fleet’s typical sixyear cycle, because there is less use of the refrigeration unit’s engine and compressor. Using the technology enables the company to do away with many routine maintenance items such as belts, shaft seals and alternators, resulting in a cost savings. “We have continued to grow for nearly 70 years because we pay attention to details,” Taddonio says. “We’re focused on making decisions that are financially sound and reflect our commitment to quality and customer service. With all the challenges we have to address, we have to make the right decisions or we won’t be in this business for long.”

The way to pay

S

B Y

hould you pay your drivers by the mile, by percentage, or by the hour? Truckers aren’t covered by the 1937 Fair Labor Standards Act, or by the federal minimum wage law, so the decision as to which method to pay truck drivers is left to each individual motor carrier. But, remember, you

T I M

B R A D Y,

B U S I N E S S

E D I T O R

get what you pay for. After considerable thought and after reviewing the many conversations I’ve had with truckers—as employees and lease operators, company owners and managers—as well as reviewing university studies concerning driver pay, my conclusion is that per mile is the least attractive of the three wage scale options.

20 American Trucker/November 2013

Go to

Per-mile pay is very difficult to understand because of the various methods of computing pay. For which miles are drivers being paid? Odometer, PC or pro miles, or origin-to-destination? What about deadhead miles? There’s a lot of room for confusion by both driver and management, and that confusion can easily lead to discontent

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

and even conflict between drivers and management—and this, in turn, leads to driver turnover. These misunderstands can be reduced by choosing to pay drivers either by percentage of revenue or bythe-hour. Each method is far easier to calculate with less bookkeeping than per-mile calculations and both are easily understood. Also, incentives such as improved mileage, ‘no violation’ inspections, safe driving, on-time delivery, no accidents or no moving violations can be added, allowing drivers to receive additional revenue for good performance. Again, this is far easier for everyone to understand.

WHAT DRIVERS WANT

A study done in 2005 by Professors John E. Delery, Ph.D., and Nina Gupta, Ph.D., of the Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas, outlines needs that must be met in order to retain drivers. These are: ❑ Consistent pay week to week ❑ Pay for all tasks required to complete a load ❑ Consistent home time The professors concluded in the study that per-mile pay wasn’t conducive to meeting these needs. When a trucker is paid by the mile, any slow travel or idle time reduces the driver’s pay. In other words, the more dangerous the conditions, the lower the amount of pay the trucker receives. Paying by the mile can and does cause drivers to take unnecessary risks because they feel that if they don’t make the miles, they won’t make the take-home pay they need. So this now becomes a safety issue. What about by-the-hour and percentage pay? This really comes down to the individual situation of the trucking company and what type of hauling you do. It also depends on how much revenue information you’re willing and/or able to share

Go to

with employees and contractors. Let’s first examine the employee driver. Since he/she is an employee, you’re withholding taxes from each paycheck. This is conducive to either an hourly or percentage-based pay scale. Personal preference and what works best in your segment of the business would be the determining factor. One thing about paying percentages is that the employee becomes a part of the business. The lower everyone can keep the costs, the more money everybody can earn. By-thehour can create an opportunity for employees to pad the time it takes to complete a job, thus costing the carrier more than it should have if the

Drivers expect consistent and fair pay. job had been paid on a percentage basis. On the other hand, if the work is tedious and very detailed—and it’s important for the employee to take the time to cover all the intricacies—then per hour might be better. It gets a bit dicey for lease operators (contractors), as it comes down to how much of the contractor’s business are you, as the carrier, controlling? Many states and the IRS are closely looking at whether drivers are employees or independent contractors, so while you may believe that one way is better, you should understand the differences. The IRS uses three characteristics to determine the relationship between businesses and workers. Behavioral control covers facts that show whether the business has a right to direct or control how the work is done through instructions, training or other means. Financial control is whether

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

the business has a right to direct or control the financial and business aspects of the worker’s job. And finally, how do workers and business owners perceive their relationship? Following are some of the things every business owner must consider before hiring: ❑ If you have the right to control or direct not only what’s to be done, but also how it’s to be done, then your workers are most likely employees. ❑ If you can direct or control only the result of the work done—and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result—then your workers are probably independent contractors. Employers who misclassify workers as independent contractors can end up with substantial tax bills. Additionally, employers can face penalties for failing to pay employment taxes and for failing to file required tax forms. Workers who know their proper status can avoid higher tax bills and lost benefits, and companies can avoid potential IRS penalties. Both employers and workers can ask the IRS to make a determination on whether a specific individual is an independent contractor or an employee. A chance glance at a double-bunk cabover sparks a lifelong affiliation for hauling freight on the open road By Sean Kilcarr, editor

usty Allen’s career in trucking began through a combination of disappointment, random chance, and the indefatigable encouragement of long-haul veterans. The disappointment came during Allen’s high school years in Somerville, NJ. It was right around 1974 and a passionate interest in becoming the next “Wolfman Jack” got unceremoniously squelched during a special 4H-sponsored class in radio technology. “I loved the Wolfman, loved

cover story listening to him, and loved the thought of being a radio DJ,” explains Allen. “But my teachers told me that I would never get near the microphone. If I chose a career in radio, they said, I’d be stuck behind the [sound engineering] boards my entire life.” Allen was very discouraged by his teacher’s pronouncements, so his best friend at the time tried to cheer him up by asking if he wanted to go see his dad’s new truck. He says he had no idea what a long-haul tractor even looked like—until he spied that doublebunk Kenworth cabover sitting in his friend’s driveway. “I took one look at that truck and said, ‘What is that?’” Allen recalls. “I could do almost nothing but think about that truck. Right away I changed dreams; I wanted to drive trucks for a living.”

INTO THE UNKNOWN Yet he knew little about a truck driver’s life, much less what skills would be required to successfully navigate a big rig through fair or foul weather. That’s why Allen would spend much of his free time on the weekends up at the local truck stop, talking to the endless stream of drivers who flowed in and out of the place. From all walks of life, those savvy “old-timers,” as Allen refers to them, provided a crucial real-world education in what it meant to live a life on the road. They especially instilled in him the driver’s code of honor, neatly summed up by the phrase “Knights of the Road.” “This was back when if you were broken down on the side of the highway and you saw a trucker pull over behind you, you breathed a sigh of relief because you knew help had arrived,” Allen relates. “Not like today, when probably most people in such a

Right away I changed my dreams.” situation would be more apt to grab a tire iron for fear of something bad happening.” Indeed, many now regard the ’70s as the heyday of the truck driving profession, when drivers were romanticized (if you can call it that) as modern-day cowboys, though also sometimes as outlaws. At that time, the American public was falling in love with the life of a trucker—from trucker hats, to citizen’s band (CB) radios, to trucker slang (that’s a big 10-4). Just as Allen entered the industry as a rookie driver, trucking began reaching its pinnacle (some say) in popular culture, starting with the release of the song “Convoy,” written by C.W. McCall. The song is about a convoy of truck drivers evading speed traps and toll booths across America and went on to become the number one hit on the Billboard charts in 1976. An action movie based on the popular song’s name (“Convoy”) quickly followed in 1978, starring Kris Kristofferson and directed by legendary Hollywood filmmaker Sam Peckinpah.

24 American Trucker/November 2013

Allen notes that 1978 is the year he officially began driving a truck for a living, though it proved a tough chore to find a company willing to give him a chance behind the wheel. “I just pulled out the phone book and started calling companies,” he says. “I started with the A’s and made it all the way down to the U’s before someone took a chance on me.” That chance began with a construction firm. The company’s more senior drivers coached Allen in the tricks of his chosen trade. The same style of mentoring continued when he switched out of dump trucks and started hauling goods as a co-driver up and down the East Coast as well as back and forth from the Midwest for United Van Lines. “The old-timers helped teach me how to back up a truck, how to maneuver in tight places,” he says.

CHANGING TIMES Yet as the 1970s transitioned into the 1980s and ’90s, it became tougher and tougher to eke out a stable paycheck in trucking.

Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings

Since trucking underwent deregulation in 1980, driver pay has trailed inflation for the better part of 33 years, says Dave Ross, managing director of the global transportation and logistics research group at Wall Street firm Stifel Nicolaus & Co. Allen himself began feeling the impact of that paycheck decline as he shuttled between different company driver jobs hauling dirt and/ or freight. So in 1993, he decided to let go of the steering wheel for a while. “My wife and I both had a tough time by then with my hours, my pay, and my lack of home time,” he explains. “We also had our kids to think about so I walked away from driving to take a job at a local warehouse.”

MISSING THE ROAD

That warehouse job provided good pay, good benefits, regular hours, plenty of home time, and allowed Allen to put his kids through college. Yet from the moment he took that job “something just died within me,” he says. “For me, emotionally, it was rough. I just love driving; it’s a part of who I am. I’m also more productive on the road; it’s where I do my best thinking.” As a result, by 2004, he’d had enough of the daily warehouse grind and decided to get back on the road—but this time at the wheel of his own truck. “I bought an old 1987 Autocar dump truck from a friend and started working construction again,” he says. But by January 2007, with the Great Recession building in the wings, the construction market “basically died in New Jersey” so Allen went looking for an over-the-road opportunity. It started with a windowshopping excursion to his local

Freightliner dealership. “I just went in there to look around,” Allen explains. Next thing he knew, though, he’d bought a used 2000 model year Freightliner Classic highway tractor done up in a white base coat with blue trim and piping—a truck he’s still operating today—with just over 978,000 mi. on the odometer. “I’ve had a few problems here and there, but it’s held up very well,” Allen says. For example, despite its mileage, Allen’s only had to replace

“For me, emotionally, it was rough. I just love driving; it’s part of who I am.” one diesel injector on the engine so far. “It’s not one of those custom trucks you see on calendars, but I just love it.” Allen’s tractor represents his livelihood, so he takes great pains to take care of it. He follows a rigorous set of rules to not only keep his rig up and running but to extend its useful life as well. These include: ❑ Maintain a steady 58 mph when possible so as not to work the engine too hard and save on fuel. ❑ Regular maintenance checks once a week and servicing every 12,000 mi. ❑ Regular tire pressure checks to ensure longer tire life and optimal fuel economy. ❑ Use of a scan gauge to keep track of engine operations and a

pyrometer to monitor exhaust temperature. ❑ Maintain proper greasing of the fifth well and chassis. ❑ Wash the vehicle twice a month using a pressure washer and hose in between to prevent grime and road salt buildup. “You’ve got to do your PMs regularly; you can’t shirk on that,” stresses Allen. “You’ve got to put the time and effort into maintaining your truck; you’ve got to take care of it.” He also credits this maintenance program for helping keep his truck on the road and out of the garage.

GIVING BACK

But Allen points out that trucking isn’t the “end-all, be-all” of his life. He believes truckers, like any business professional, need to serve their communities as well. That part of his personal credo took on a larger dimension right after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “I was still working at the warehouse on that day, and we were located just 50 or 60 mi. from downtown New York,” he explains. “That was a really bad day. We were locked down in the warehouse and watched it all. When the second plane hit the [World Trade Center] building, I just lost it. I literally could not speak, and I am usually the kind of person who is never at a loss for words.” The emotions of that day drove Allen to do something for his community. Finding himself too old to join the military, he instead settled on becoming a volunteer firefighter as a way to give back. “I remember thinking of all the firefighters and police who lost their lives at the World Trade Center trying to save people,” he says. “They made me realize that we all had to do our part to protect and

American Trucker/November 2013 25

serve our neighbors and families.” As a result, in April 2002, he became a volunteer firefighter in Jamesburg, NJ, eventually qualifying as a member of the First Aid Squad’s crash truck, which handles all serious accidents and disasters on and off the New Jersey Turnpike and the local community. “I’ve worked industrial fires and vehicle crashes, both of which pose dangers,” Allen says. “I once had a tire blow up during a vehicle fire we were fighting. That really scared me. We also once nearly got hit by traffic fighting a truck fire on the highway. But it’s been so rewarding; I’ve gotten to work with a lot of great people and I’ve saved a life or two. That’s been the greatest part of it.” Allen stresses that his work as a volunteer firefighter isn’t about making himself look or feel good. “I’m doing this for others, to help people I don’t know because it’s a job that needs doing,” he says. That philosophical underpinning also applies to his trucking career as well. “A lot of guys out here do a stellar job because driving a truck is not just a job; it’s a profession you have to take seriously,” he explains. “I just wish all the other motorists would stop and think about how they drive and how their actions affect the lives of everyone on the road. Sometimes a single careless action by a car driver is what causes a terrible accident. I wish more people would think about that.” Trucking also remains a challenge in many ways, too, because the pay remains low and the required hours reduce his volunteer firefighting opportunities. “I’ve also had three back operations, so that’s been something else to struggle with,” Allen says. “But I am old school through and through. This is what I love, this is how I do it, and I will not change.” AT

rucking is a career that came easily to William Brady from the time he first joined his father, who drove long-haul for 52 years, as a young kid on trips.“I basically grew up in a truck and I loved it from the start,” he explains, noting that he’s now been on the road himself for 16 years pulling refrigerated and dry van trailers all over the lower 48. “I took five months off once to work as a dispatcher and in brokerage, but I just missed it too much,” Brady says. “I just kept seeing trucks heading out on the road and kept asking myself, ‘Where are they going?’ I just enjoy seeing places in this country most don’t get to see. I’ve just always had a love for trucks and the men and women who sacrifice their home time to make sure we have clothes and food to eat.” Yet Brady, an owner-operator leased on to

meat cutting and packing operation is an unusual place to start a trucking career, but that’s exactly where Joe Ferguson started out. He began working in the family trade at age 13 and gradually moved on to a wide range of jobs— from bare-knuckled work on oil rigs to the more sedate, white-collar, desk-bound world of finance. Yet for Ferguson, those careers never truly satisfied him—until he got behind the wheel of a big rig. Starting out with Werner Enterprises, he drove long-haul, regional, and dedicated routes before finally setting out on his own in 2003. “I bought six trucks, but for three years it was tough,”he explains. “I knew right away I needed to take a step back and learn more about the business, so I sold all of them, except mine, to a

That’s why he joined Truckers Against Human Trafficking in December 2012, speaking on behalf of the group at schools, community gatherings, and with other truckers to try and “make a difference” for those trapped in prostitution. Brady also works with a related group called Destination Freedom, speaking about the human trafficking issue at hotels, motels, and truck stops to make them aware of the devastation it causes in the lives of people. He even participated on a panel organized by Columbia University to talk about the human cost of pornography and prostitution, sharing the stage with academic experts, a former NFL player, and an actor/director. “They all wanted to hear about‘the real world’ from me, a truck driver, about what’s really going on where this issue is concerned,”Brady says. brokerage firm and got behind a desk for a while.” After delving into the administrative side of trucking for a few years, Ferguson returned to the road, eventually adding a second truck to his operation. Ferguson points out he’s not at all hard-fisted when it comes to giving back to his community, because committing to charity and volunteer work is how he hopes to change the perception of trucking. “If there’s a food drive going on, or someone’s gathering relief supplies, I’ll ask if they need a trailer to store it all in,” Ferguson says. “I may not be able to loan them one of mine, so often I’ll go rent one.” And while he admits it’s hard to volunteer when he’s on the road full time, Ferguson says it’s time well-spent. “At the end of the day, it’s really all about finding a way to do what each of us can do to give back to our communities in order to help make them better,” he says.

Securing a future MANAGER: Geoff Garafola TITLE: Product & technical information manager FLEET: Inland Truck Parts Co., Kansas City, MO OPERATION: A 28-store network of truck parts, remanufacturing services and truck maintenance facilities

M

anaging 28 stores in 10 states isn’t easy, but it pales in comparison to providing parts and related maintenance services for trucks ranging from sport utility vehicles and pickups all the way up to heavy-duty trucks. But it’s what needs to be done to keep revenues and profits rolling in a highly competitive marketplace, says Geoff Garafola, product & technical information manager for Inland Truck Parts Co. Established in 1944, Inland began as a truck partsonly conglomeration of stores. In the 1990s, the company added truck maintenance services, buying out existing

PROBLEM

I

nland’s solution is two-fold, explains Garafola. First, use a common computer platform to not only track parts and service inventory in each store, but to allow that inventory to be viewed by all stores. “The key is to leverage our inhouse advantages—in-house gear shops and on-site reman facilities that provide rebuilt and remanufactured transmissions, drivelines, clutches and more—with our truck parts and maintenance/repair options, all while providing more customized service,” Garafola points out. “That’s why each store stocks its own parts specific to the needs of its market, while doing so on a common [computer] platform so all the stores can see what each other has on hand,” he notes. “That is where the employee ownership comes in; it goes hand-in-hand with our ability to quickly move those parts around and tap into our different in-house services.” Garafola calls employee ownership the springboard for successfully integrating Inland’s disparate services and locations into a single team, even as its computer system links all of its offerings together in the digital sense. That

locations as well as building new facilities that eventually spanned Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming. Yet getting all of these stores and shops to work in concert and also provide service tailored to the specific markets served by Inland’s facilities proved difficult. “Some areas are more focused on light-duty business, others on heavy-duty,” Garafola explains. “We want each store to be independent, but we also want them to be mutually supporting. That can be a little tricky with the wide variety of customers we serve.” approach may be vital in order to benefit from growth in the $17.1 billion North American truck parts market buoyed by a continual rise in used-truck registrations. Automotive market intelligence firm Polk, a division of global consulting firm IHS, reports that usedcommercial vehicle registrations during the first half of this year totaled nearly 357,100, up more than 9% over the same period in 2012. Of significance is that the demand for this type of equipment continues to be strong and continues to outperform new registrations, Polk says. Used-commercial equipment transactions accounted for 56.7% of total commercial vehicle transactions during the first half of the year. Inland is doing what it can to win—and retain—any parts and service business that might develop from the bigger population of used trucks operating in the U.S. “We can’t grow our business and serve the many needs of customers acting completely independently. We need to cooperate and integrate to bring truck parts, reman offerings, and repair services together in a single package for customers to select from,” Garafola says. —SEAN KILCARR

spotlight on an How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime?

BY TIMOTHY BRADY

Do you think of yourself as a trucking company or one that uses trucks in the course of conducting business? We run our transportation as a totally autonomous trucking division doing business as Crystal Refrigerated Express (CRX), and though Williams Sausage is the biggest customer of CRX, it does generate substantial revenue from other customers.

Our shop performs regular maintenance; weekly checks of all equipment are documented to try and minimize downtime. We maintain mileage/time intervals of every 15,000 mi. for oil and grease.

Crystal Refrigerated Express Owner: The Williams family, CEO Roger Williams

Do you have regularly scheduled routes or on-demand delivery?

In business: Since 1958

We are about 70% scheduled routes and 30% ondemand.

Crystal Refrigerated Express is the trucking arm of Williams Sausage Co. Williams was founded in 1958 by Harold L. Williams, who delivered his first sausages—500 lbs. at a time—in the back of a pickup truck. Williams has grown over the years, adding items such as link sausage, sausage patties, and microwaveable breakfast sandwiches.

How is maintenance handled? Routine service maintenance is handled in-house. Major maintenance or repair jobs are outsourced.

Location: Union City, TN

Website: www.williams-sausage.com

What are three challenges you face in your maintenance program?

How do you ensure good mileage from tires? We do regular checks on tire pressure and document those checks. We document failure of recapped trailer tires and monitor suppliers.

Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? We stock alternators, starters, oil filters, fuel filters, batteries, bulbs, fuses, and Carrier refrigeration components.

How do you determine when it’s time to replace equipment?

1. We are having major challenges maintaining emissions control devices on one brand of truck we have. 2. Having the diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot newer equipment. 3. Improving tire life.

We replace trucks every 600,000 mi, and trailers every 10 years. New trucks are built to our specs.

How do you resolve each of these?

We keep internal records on all self-performed and outsourced maintenance, and we monitor this against DOT inspections for compliance.

We have been moving…to Volvo and Kenworth to eliminate some of the issues we are having with emissions control devices. We have been evaluating diagnostic equipment to see if we could find something that will work and is cost-effective. We have been maintaining better records on tire life and holding vendors responsible for stated life.

Wheels

H

ub-piloted wheels, which are most common on commercial vehicles today, have been proven to provide better torque retention, require less maintenance, and in most cases last longer. The 10-hole hub-piloted wheel system, now the industry standard, features straight-through stud-bolt holds (no ball seat or spherical countersink) and is positioned on the hub by wheel pilot pads to provide true mounting to the axle end. For heavy loads, manufacturers also offer studpiloted wheel systems, which use nuts on the bolts or studs to center the wheel correctly. Lighter weight aluminum wheels have been a spec of choice for many fleets, especially those looking to boost payload capacity or lighten up vehicles to save fuel. Steve Carlson, global sales manager, Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels, notes that at nearly half the weight of a steel wheel, aluminum wheels on Class 3-8 trucks can improve fuel economy, which cuts down on carbon emissions, and offer productivity advantages. Aluminum wheels are also recyclable, he adds. Alcoa offers 22.5x8.25-in. standard dual and 22.5x14-in. wide base aluminum wheels. According to the manufacturer, converting 18 steel 22.5-in. wheels to Alcoa LvL ONE aluminum wheels reduces vehicle weight by more than 600 lbs. Switching from 22.5-in. steel wheels to 14-in. wide base aluminum wheels reduces the weight of an 18-wheel combination vehicle by nearly 1,400 lbs., the company notes. The Accuride product line includes hub- and stud-piloted, tubeless and tube-type forged aluminum and steel wheels for heavy- and medium-duty trucks, trailers, buses, light commercial trucks, and specialty vehicles. Both Alcoa and Accuride note that aluminum wheels offer the benefit of corrosion resistance, which virtually eliminates maintenance costs. Simply put, the companies say aluminum wheels do not require refurbishing so the need to dismount tires, paint or touch up wheels, and then remount tires to avoid corrosion is eliminated, along with the maintenance costs associated with that activity. Alcoa aluminum wheels are available in brush and polish finish options; select models can be ordered with the manufacturer’s Dura-Bright surface treatment option, a production process that penetrates the forged aluminum. Accuride’s Accu-Armor aluminum wheel surface treatment is similarly resistant to scuffs and scratches that occur during normal wear and should never corrode. Maxion Wheels offers a range of low alloy steel wheels for commercial vehicles in sizes up to 24.5 in. for singleor dual-wheel applications. The manufacturer also offers wide base steel wheels for weight-sensitive applications. The company notes when its wide base wheels replace dual wheels, a weight savings of up to 166 lbs. per axle is observed compared to standard steel wheel products. The company also offers its MaxCoat corrosion-resistant, triple-protection coating system. Wheel manufacturers have a wealth of spec information readily available. Online tools can make choosing wheels a simple task. Maxion Wheels has updated its quick reference and cross-reference guides for its North American OEM and aftermarket customers. The guides help customers specify the wheel needed for new or existing vehicles. When considering wheel choices, all of the manufacturers agree that lifetime value should always be the goal.
