Fuel predictions
I
If the Energy Information Administration (EIA) is to be believed, truckers should enjoy lower-than-average fuel prices this winter, courtesy of falling oil prices, rising domestic crude production and a mild winter. One of the big reasons EIA cites is the increase in domestic production of crude. Back in September, the was producing 8.7 million barLower prices country rels per day (bbl/d). That should rise to may finally an average of 9.5 million bbl/d in 2015. Weakening global demand for oil is be on tap also pushing down the critical North Brent crude oil spot prices, which for truckers Sea dropped to an average of $97 per barrel in September. This is the first month Brent prices have averaged below $100 per barrel in more than two years. EIA predicts that Brent crude will average $98 per barrel in the fourth-quarter of this year before rising back up to $102 per barrel in 2015. What will that do for fuel prices? Well, EIA expects diesel, which averaged $3.92/gal. in 2013, to average $3.85/gal. for 2014 and then inch down to $3.80/gal. in 2015. Good stuff for truck operators. Let’s just hope these predictions hold true. AT

Eaton introduces MD transmission
E
aton Corp. will bring to market a 7-speed, mediumduty, dual-clutch transmission by the middle of next year. According to the company, the Procision delivers 8 to 10% better fuel economy compared to a torque converter automatic transmission in a similarly equipped vehicle. Thanks to its electronic shifting, the transmission is able to optimize fuel efficiency by using grade, vehicle weight and throttle input to provide smooth, continuous delivery of torque. One of the benefits of the transmission is its dual-clutch technology, which allows it to make gear changes by “swapping the engine torque between clutches with the next gear pre-selected.” “The upshot with a dual-clutch design is that the slower you go, the more starts and stops you do, the more grades you negotiate at slow speeds, the better your fuel economy will be,” said Jeff Carpenter, engineering manager for Procision. Fully contained within the transmission, the dual-clutch module is hydraulically controlled and oilcooled for extended life. The use of a new synthetic transmission fluid extends lube and filter change intervals out to 150,000 mi. The internal sump filter and electrical system do not require maintenance, Eaton said. The company spent two years compiling studies on customer wants and needs, and that was then followed by three years of development for the transmission. “The biggest challenge in design-
The Procision features dual-clutch architecture for smoother performance. ing it was the hydraulic controls,” explained Carpenter. “The two-stage hydraulic pump design added to the complexity, and [we] spent the final year fine-tuning the dual-clutch hydraulic controls with a temperature variance. We want consistent performance—even at subzero temperatures when transmission oil [tends] to thicken due to the cold.” Fuel economy is a key benefit of the transmission, which will be initially available for Class 6-7 applications. When fully integrated with the Cummins Vehicle Acceleration Management system, which can be used in conjunction with Eaton Dynamic Shifting, the design is said to minimize the impact of aggressive drivers on fuel economy. Procision is also optimized with “Urge to Move” and “Creep Mode.” Both features can be disabled for even greater fuel economy. In addition, transmission load on the engine is actively reduced when the truck is stopped for increased fuel economy, Eaton said. Three power take-off (PTO) openings are included. www.eaton.com

trucking insights
Helping with homework I
f you’re going to use lease operators, keep in mind that as you set your hauling rates, you need to include the extra expenses they’ll incur, which aren’t included in your cost structure. These expenses include bobtail insurance, cell phone, Internet service, meals, and lodging. Structure the revenue paid to a lease operator so it meets his/her expenses along with personal salary needs. It must also allow for a profit so she/he can grow their business and be prepared for the unexpected. Having that all-important reserve is a must so that you are not asked for an advance on pay to cover costs. Help your lease drivers figure out exactly how much they need to earn monthly to meet their goals. Help them focus on the big picture—that monthly revenue goal—instead of micro-managing the revenue on each load. Make sure your dispatchers work with each driver to help them achieve these goals. Your lease operators will be happier with their revenue and remain with your trucking company for years. Not only will that help driver retention, but it will help your bottom line as well. Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Hauling heavy loads uphill. Now there’s an oil for it. Hauling heavy loads uphill can push the temperature of your engine’s components to new extremes and puts massive stress on the cooling system. All that heavy hauling can cook the oil, leading to oxidation and viscosity increase that compromises an oil’s ability to protect your engine. You can now protect your engine against Severe Duty conditions with Delo 400 SD SAE 15W-30. It’s a new kind of oil engineered, using patent pending technology, to protect engines under Severe Duty. Western Star takes aerodynamic route
B
est known for its vocational and heavy-haul Class 8 models, Western Star Trucks is expanding into the aerodynamic on-highway market with an all-new model. The Western Star 5700XE combines the fuel efficiency of an aero dynamic package and optimized drivetrain. The tractor features styling quite distinct from other aerodynamic trucks combined with the most efficient integrated Daimler powertrain technologies, the company said. Daimler’s Detroit will supply the 5700XE’s three engine displacement choices (DD13, DD15 and DD16) with ratings up to 600 hp. The standard transmission for all three engines will be the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission, although buyers will be able to spec an Eaton manual transmission as an option. The 5700’s standard axles will also be supplied by Detroit, although Meritor drive axles will be available as options. The only suspension offered will be Daimler’s

CARB to enforce GHG regulations
C
alifornia’s lead agency for regulating air quality has received the clearance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce its regulations requiring certain truck operators to use aerodynamic devices and low rolling resistance tires. The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB’s) request for a waiver of preemption came under the Clean Air Act. As a result of the approval, CARB is allowed to enforce its heavy-duty (HD) tractor-trailer greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations as they apply to certain vehicles. The affected vehicles are new 2011 through 2013 model-year Class 8 tractors equipped with integrated sleeper berths and new 2011 and subsequent model dry-van and refrigerated-van trailers that are pulled by such tractors on California highways. CARB asked for the waiver in June 2013. Although the HD GHG regs apply to a broader class of vehicles, the California agency specifically limited the scope of its request to just new MY 2011-MY 2013 tractors and MY 2011 and later trailers “that together are considered to operate as an integrated vehicle.” According to court precedent, opponents of a waiver request bear the burden of showing that it should be denied. EPA received comments on the request from the American Trucking Assns., California Trucking Assn., Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Assn., and California Construction Trucking Assn. EPA needed to answer several questions, one of which was whether including trailers in the regulations constitutes “standards relating to the control of emissions from new motor vehicles or new motor vehicle engines.” If not, CARB wouldn’t even be preempted from regulating trailers as state law provides for such regulation, EPA said.

he true growth area in telematics in the coming decade, at least in North America and Europe, will be prognostics, that is, being able to predict a component or part failure in advance, said Sandeep Kar, global director, automotive & transportation research for Frost & Sullivan. Speaking at the recent Commercial Vehicle Outlook Conference in Dallas, he said the big challenge in prognostics is that there are only two components of the truck (the engine and the tires) that currently are linked into vehicle telematics in widespread commercial operations. Remote diagnostics and prognostics aren’t the top application fleets seek in telematics, but the level of interest is high, Kar said. In Frost & Sullivan’s most recent survey of fleet purchasing intentions, the leading telematics technologies that fleets were actively considering were critical event/safety system intervention alerts and navigation-aided regulatory compliance. Remote diagnostics and prognostics ranked fifth among systems fleets were considering, but it was first among those that fleets said they might consider.
And along with the critical event alerts, remote diagnostics and prognostics was the only technology that all fleets indicated some interest in obtaining. Prognostics face a challenge, though, Kar said. “The problem with prognostics is that only a few systems can be prognosed; for example, engines and tires.” Kar said that for fleets to realize the full potential of prognostics, most vehicle systems will need to be linked with electronic interfaces. Other systems and components he highlighted were brakes, transmissions, cooling system, fueling system, catalytic converter, oil, air filters, and alternator. One dynamic that will spur this development is the increasing number of vendors and other stakeholders getting into telematics in general and predictive maintenance in particular, Kar said. In addition to aftermarket vendors, all of the truck manufacturers have some type of telematics program, and many of the Tier 1 suppliers are developing their own. Frost & Sullivan estimates that about 230,000 vehicles in North America currently have some type of prognostics application.

Setting priorities
E
Efficiency experts are obsessed with the concept of restructuring. The subject doesn’t matter because they believe there is always a better way. They are convinced that if you eliminate a position and divide the responsibilities between other positions, then the result will be a more effective operation. I’ve seen it happen countless times over the past few years where one individual is Maintenance responsible for managing the tire program and then that can’t be an person is gone. The good news, bad news is that the afterthought lucky person who kept his or her job then had to find a way to absorb the additional work and maintain the overall effectiveness of the program with no experience. While everything else on the vehicle has become more reliant on computers and electronics, the service and maintenance requirements for tires haven’t changed much, if at all. The 10-hole disc wheel with a tubeless low-profile 22.5-in. tire that I changed for the first time 30 years ago is basically demounted, mounted and inflated the same way today. In fact, the biggest difference between now and then is the method of installing it on the axle because torque wrenches are finally replacing the good and tight process associated with impact wrenches. That’s progress. But managing a tire program at the fleet level is a lot more complicated than most people would think. While some fleets are almost exclusively linked to a single manufacturer, others are constantly testing products from a wide range of tire and retread companies in order to find the best performance and cost per mile. Regardless, someone needs to audit the single-manufacturer approach to make sure it is delivering what is promised
and the multiple-manufacturer approach to ensure the data that is being reported is accurate. Then there are the vendors to worry about. The major tire companies have created national service networks so they can offer some degree of consistency from one location to the next. In most instances, they have company-owned stores where they maintain total control and independently owned companies where the level of control is limited to some degree. And while one may think the company-owned stores would be the best option, that isn’t always the case. Like any organization with multiple locations, there are good ones and ones that are marginal. On the other hand, some of the independent dealers are incredibly organized and capable of delivering a consistently high level of service while others are not. Being part of a service network is not a guarantee of success, but it’s a step in the right direction, albeit one that still requires regular oversight. It’s also important that tire policies are created for the right reasons. I still see far too many virgin casings that are rejected because the customer refused a section repair, and steer tires that are scrapped because a simple puncture is outside the repair parameters. From the maintenance perspective, tires must be a top priority because they are only going to get more expensive as raw material and energy costs increase. Making them an afterthought and turning the tire program over to a person with no tire experience is a recipe for disaster. And if there is a better and more economical way to manage tires and retreads, they won’t even know where to look. AT

AUTO HAULING
Delivering safety Communications, vehicles contribute to overall pattern of safe driving and top-notch service
E
Established in 1994, Rhode Islandbased Virginia Transportation Corp. has grown from a single-truck operation into a nationwide automobile carrier with 187 company-owned vehicles based at locations in Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, and Alabama. The company’s customers include automobile manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, and car dealerships throughout the U.S. and Canada. “Our drivers are very proud and independent,” says Deanna D. dela Cruz, safety & compliance manager at Virginia Transportation Corp. “They work hard every day to deliver vehicles safely, with zero damage, and in a timely manner. At the same time, we’re continually working to improve safety by encouraging open communication and by recognizing areas that need improvement.” Communication is but one area that Virginia Transportation uses to improve its safety culture. “Communicating with drivers and expressing the importance of individual responsibility for safety fosters a better understanding of how it affects them directly, as well as the company as a whole, and it empowers them to continually improve,”
dela Cruz states. “For example, everything we do has a relationship to CSA scores, so we make that information available to drivers and show them how they have an impact on performance. “We stress hours-of-service rules as well,” dela Cruz continues. “This year, we enabled PeopleNet’s electronic driver logs solution. Beyond streamlining HOS reporting, eDriver logs help drivers focus on HOS by testing their knowledge of the latest rules. Whether a driver didn’t have to make changes in driving practices or had to adjust, the solution is a great all-around tool for compliance and education.” It’s especially important for auto haulers to be able to rely on equipment, dela Cruz relates, which is why Virginia Transportation only has tractors that are less than three years old. Among the models in the fleet are Western Stars and Peterbilts. Also standard are Cottrell Trailers with soft tie-down systems that meet the requirements of new vehicle manufacturers and provide the fleet with options for quick loading and unloading of different load sizes and configurations. “We are also making things easier

Specifically, during the two years prior to mid-September of this year, the auto hauler was subjected to 125 vehicle inspections, which resulted in a 9.6% out-of-service rate compared to a U.S. national average for the same period of 20.72%. Driver inspections also resulted in fewer violations than the national average. For Virginia Transportation, dela Cruz notes, the latest technologies and continual improvement efforts are paying off as well in a very low 10% driver turnover rate, adding up to a safer, more efficient operation. Small world, big business A community banker talks about the global economy and the role of small business BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR
A
merican Trucker recently had the opportunity to sit down with Michael W. Hagan, president & CEO of Reelfoot Bank, to discuss the climate for small businesses. Reelfoot Bank is a 100-year-old community bank located in Union City, TN. Hagan was the 2013 president of the Independent Bankers Division of the Tennessee Bankers Assn. What’s your observation on the state of the economy so far this year for small businesses? The state of the economy for small businesses in Tennessee remains fairly flat in my view. I’ve talked with bankers all across the state and in other parts of the United States, and they share the same opinions on the economy. The economic engines of growth in small towns and rural areas seem to be stuck in ‘idle’ at the present time.
16 American Trucker/November 2014
Are there differences for small businesses in rural and small-town America? My major concern is the labor force in small towns and rural areas. Over the last 10 years, small towns and rural areas in America have seen a number of manufacturing companies close, move overseas or relocate to major metropolitan markets. As this occurs, the labor force in small towns and rural areas also moves to find employment opportunities. This issue has been named “rural flight.” Rural flight creates a loss in the employment base as the population decreases and, in turn, the average household income starts to decline as the good-paying jobs leave..

What were three difficult challenges faced by these small businesses? Three areas that have concerned me during this year continue to be a challenge not only to rural areas and small-town America, but also each and every household, small business, large business and corporate entity in America. They are the following: 1. The overall slow and sluggish economic environment that we all face. 2. Government over-reach at the federal and state levels. 3. The dysfunctional situation that exists with our government in Washington, D.C. That applies to all political parties in the House and Senate. Even the White House seems to lack the ability to find common ground and move issues forward toward an agreement that will benefit all. What is your prognosis for 2015 for rural and small-town America businesses? I don’t want to sound like I’m being pessimistic, but I do not expect to see a lot of change in 2015. I base my opinion on the fact that we’ve become such a global society from the standpoint of economic activity. When you look at the weak economic activity in the European markets, Japan, China, etc., and see no growth, it’s quite apparent that will affect all business markets. Over the last five years, the net GDP growth in the United States has been just over 2% collectively. The GDP forecast by the United States government for 2014 is predicted to end the year at just over 2%. I do not think that much growth will be possible, and the year will end with a GDP of closer to 1.5% or 1.75% range of growth.
In your opinion, what’s the best strategy for these businesses in 2015? I’ve started to observe over the last couple of years a change in the attitude of small-business owners—definitely a change for the better. I’m no longer hearing about the hand-wringing, sleepless nights, gut-wrenching attitude about decisions to be made or the “Chicken Little” approach that the sky is falling. Instead, small-business owners have learned to accept the economic situation for what it is. The attitude is now one of making the best of the challenging situation: by looking for the smallest of incremental changes that can be made into a business model, which will add up on the bottom line for better financial performance. This approach to the mental aspects of being a manager has got to continue if small businesses are going to be successful. You’re a community banker who works with small businesses. What advice would you give business owners working with their community bank so they get the most benefit from the relationship? This is what I like to call Basic Banking 101 for bank customers. It involves two key elements. First and foremost is good communication with your banker. Keep your banker informed about what’s going on with your business or company. This means being honest and straightforward. Your banker has got to be told the good, the bad and everything in between. Your banker should be considered your business partner, but he cannot help you if he’s not informed. Remember, a discussion with your banker should be a two-way street, and your banker should be engaged and focused on the conversation. If he is not, then it may be time to look for a new banker. The second element is keeping your
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
financial records up-to-date. When your banker calls or sends a letter requesting a copy of a tax return or updated financial statements, try to get them delivered as soon as possible. It’s not that your banker is being nosy or wants to pester you; he needs that information to keep your file complete and current. If a bank examiner reviews your file and finds stale financial information or tax returns being filed late, it’s going to be a red flag to the examiner that will, in turn, make life difficult for your banker. Stale financial information or late tax returns can cause an examiner to classify your credit relationship as a risk for possible loss. If this happens, your bank may be required to set aside funds in its loan loss provision to cover the balance of your loan. This situation is one that isn’t going to make your banker happy, and can make it difficult for your banker to assist you with your financial needs going forward. What would you say to smallbusiness owners who are truckers or who use trucks in their business with regard to 2015 and the future? You have got to maintain an optimistic attitude that at some point the economic markets will turn and respectable growth will once again flourish. In the interim, however, any growth or expansion of a current business should be approached with caution. You must review every variable that can impact your options, and look for alternatives. This may sound strange coming from a banker, but don’t borrow unless you must. My recommendation is to get out of debt over time, and stay out of debt. TRUCKERS
I
OF THE YEAR ndependent husband-and-wife team Daniel and Phyllis Snow epitomize the integration of “old school” trucking—heavy on chrome, cowboy covers, and the knights-of-the-road ethos—with “new age” fleet management principles aimed at boosting tractor-trailer efficiency.
One clear example is the couple’s home-grown “shop-on-the-road” concept, born out of the need to reduce the cost and downtime associated with minor roadside repairs. “The Goose,” their super-sleeperequipped 1996 Freightliner Classic XL, sports almost 1.8 million mi. on the odometer, with its big block Detroit Diesel engine rebuilt at the 1.5 million mi. mark. To avoid spending precious time searching dealerships or truck stop stores for the everyday wear-andtear items a big rig needs to keep running—everything from marker lights (The Goose sports 460) to windshield wiper blades and motor oil—Daniel decided to create Snow Trucking’s own “rolling inventory” for such goods. Space is precious on a highway tractor, with barely any room for
keeping a number of such items within easy reach, much less the foodstuffs required for good sleeper-cooked meals. What to do? Initially, Daniel and Phyllis thought about installing storage boxes underneath their trailer to carry spare parts and such. “We discovered that not only are they expensive, we’d have to do a lot of bending and stooping to access them. That would get uncomfortable quickly,” Daniel says. After years of hauling cargo, he realized that the trailer rarely ran fully loaded lengthwise—usually leaving about three or so feet to spare at the rear—regardless of what was being hauled. So Daniel came up with an idea to relocate that “dead space” to the front of the trailer. His solution was to create a storage area separated

from the cargo area with a wall. This space could be lined with shelves to store parts and whatever other supplies might be needed. He could then cut a doorway into the nose of the trailer so both he and Phyllis could quickly access it from the backdoor of their sleeper. First, though, he tested the idea for several months. He placed a dummy wall in the nose area of the trailer to see if shaving off that cargo space would impact the ability to haul full loads. After several runs, the Snows realized it had no affect at all, so Daniel quickly went to work on his idea. After cutting a doorway in the nose of the trailer, he installed a permanent dividing wall, carving out the 3 ft. of dead space within the trailer. He then built deep wooden shelves, which served as bins, that reached all the way to the ceiling of the trailer. That way, parts and supplies placed within the bins could be easily secured and not rattle around when the tractor-trailer hit the road. A recreational camper door created a weather-tight seal for the opening to the trailer storage area

All told, the “shop in the trailer” project cost about $300 to construct—and that price included the camper door. “We like doing things ourselves anyway and frankly, out here you have to be able to do things yourself,” Daniel says. “Oftentimes, you get into places where there’s no one but you, the truck, and the road.”
found themselves managing a burgeoning trucking business but also blending together a family of five— Daniel’s two sons (Eric and Jayne) and Phyllis’s three children (James, Diana and Tony. While raising their family, Daniel stayed close to home, running regional and local freight as well as doing some farming. They ended
AT THE BEGINNING Such self-reliance combined with a love of the open road made Daniel a natural fit for trucking early in life, as he often found himself traveling in a tractor-trailer driven by his older brother Coy Snow Jr. on holidays and during breaks from school. “I did whatever I could do to get in that truck with him,” he recalls. As soon as he got his own commercial driver’s license, Daniel began running hot-shot livestock loads, primarily cattle for the local auction house, and over time made handling such live freight his specialty. Things started to change, however, when he met his soon-to-bewife Phyllis at a local delicatessen in the summer of 1991. Married that December, both not only
committed to the family’s farming/trucking business, Daniel and Phyllis decided to cut loose and hit the highway together on their own. They renamed their operation Snow Trucking, acquired “The Goose” in 2004, and upgraded it to be their home on the road. By 2012, they’d sold their remaining interest in the family’s Snow Farms business to Daniel’s son Jayne and truly became independent. “We love this business of trucking and we love being together,” Phyllis explains. Good thing, too, as most years they are out on the road far more often than they are in their hometown of Harrison, AR. In fact, they spent only 13 days at home in all of 2013.

The company eventually grew to a fleet of seven trucks with handles such as “The Duck” and “The Silver Fox.” By 2002, however, more change was looming on the horizon. Daniel and Phyllis believe several things allow them to continue to be successful in the ever-more competitive trucking field: their rock-solid faith and support of one another; their joint ability to build strong connections with customers; a do-it-yourself work philosophy; and a willingness to try new things to make their operation more efficient.

“I’ll readily admit I’m an oldschool trucker,” Daniel says. “One of the reasons I’m out here is to try and set an example of professionalism and pride in what truckers do. And we treat people the way we want to be treated: with re-
spect and kindness. That’s built a reputation for us to the point where [freight] agents will ask specifically for us by name.” “Agents come out to see who we are and we make friends with them,” Phyllis adds. “We take pride in meet-

ing people who take this profession as seriously as we do and we feed off that as well.” Daniel says the old-school look of The Goose is a big draw as well. “Your rig is the face of your business,” he stresses. “While you may not have a new truck, if you make sure it’s mechanically sound and noticeably cared for with pride, it trickles down to attract more business.” Yet both Daniel and Phyllis emphasize that being open to new ideas is critical to their ability to succeed. “We’re old school in our values and beliefs, sure, but we need to be innovative enough to compete effectively,” Daniel explains. When the couple switched from hauling livestock to dry freight back in 2012, for example, they knew they’d face more competition, so they focused on making their tractor-trailer as efficient as possible. “If we’re running at 5 mpg and the larger fleets are at 7 mpg, we can’t compete—and getting to those kinds of numbers is a challenge with an older truck,” Daniel notes. As a result, they use Bully Dog tuners and gauges to help them maximize fuel economy. The couple also recently installed a SmartTruck Undertray system on their trailer to smooth the rig’s aerodynamic profile. “Sometimes you have to swallow your pride and recognize, hey, maybe I am not driving as efficiently as I can,” Daniel says. “It doesn’t cost anything to change your driving habits, yet that might be the most difficult change to make.” Both Daniel and Phyllis credit their ability to have discussions both between themselves and with industry suppliers as critical to achieving maximum efficiency for The Goose. “The definition of a discussion for us is simple: ‘I can change my

TAKING A ‘DIY’ APPROACH Daniel and Phyllis also have a doit-yourself approach to life on the road, both in terms of maintaining their equipment and their business. The big sleeper on The Goose is a prime example. Daniel and Phyllis
found the sleeper in a salvage yard and restored it, saving thousands of dollars vs. buying such a big unit brand new. In addition, all the chrome and lights decorating The Goose are self-installed and some are even self-made as the Snows realize that such detailing can be made more affordable through the expanded use Married since 1991, Daniel & Phyllis Snow started trucking together in 2002.

of one’s own elbow grease. It’s an investment that’s paid big dividends as well, Daniel says. “We’ve been so amazed at all the customer interest in our rig,” he remarks. “Many have made it a point to bring their bosses out of the office to see our truck and trailer.” In some cases, receivers actually bump them up in the loading/unloading line just so they could get a closer look at their tractor-trailer. “That’s nice, of course. But it’s even nicer when a broker calls and says, ‘The customer will pay whatever it takes to get The Goose on the job,’ ” adds Phyllis. All in all, both Daniel and Phyllis feel especially blessed to live the lives they do in the freight-hauling business. “The trucking industry is a way of life for us,” Daniel explains. “We try to maintain our Christian way of life by helping those out on the road whenever possible. “We believe the American trucker is the backbone of this country,” he adds, “and we feel very much honored to be a part of such a great industry.” AT

ehicle uptime is a critical metric for any motor carrier, but it’s doubly important in the U.S. Army as trucks on the side of the road mean soldiers don’t get resupplied with food, fuel, weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, or whatever else they might need to remain in proper fighting trim. That’s why anything and everything associated with vehicle maintenance is closely watched by transportation company commanders. And Capt. Robert Ahlers, who headed up the Ohio National Guard’s 1483rd Transportation Company for two years, can attest to that.
“If we’re out on a mission and a truck goes down, we’ve got to get it back on the road ourselves and as quickly as possible,” he explains. “If we don’t have our wrecker with us, there are tow bars on each of our trucks so one of our tractors can do the job.” Yet only about 26 out of the typical complement of 170 to 180 soldiers in a transportation company are designated as “maintainers.” While several of these maintainers are always detailed to accompany a convoy in a wrecker or fiveton support truck loaded with spare parts and other repair gear, they can’t be everywhere at every moment.

ual for the unit’s M915A5 tractors is gone over with a fine-tooth comb by the 1483rd’s drivers. The vehicles are basically Western Star models equipped with a 500-hp. Detroit engine, 6-speed Allison automatic transmission, and forward collision radar. “Before every mission, [drivers] spend at least 30 to 40 minutes closely inspecting their tractors and trailers, and it’s their responsibility to ensure fluid levels are topped off and the like,” Ahlers says. “If they spot anything amiss, we’ve got a four-bay shop they can route their equipment into.” The 1483rd’s drivers are such sticklers for detail that when they competed in the National Truck Driving Championships earlier this year, they found themselves losing points because they took far longer to conduct vehicle pre- and post-trip inspections than their civilian counterparts. “They are so used to doing things the long way that the 10-minute limit put them off,” Ahlers says. “But they conduct very rigorous pre-trip inspections for a simple reason: There’s little to no margin for error when we’re deployed on a mission.” —SEAN KILCARR

The drivers in the company conduct many maintenance duties that are typically left in the hands of mechanics and technicians in the civilian trucking world. For example, Ahlers notes that out of the 16 hours the designated drivers in the 1483rd spend in uniform, four of those hours are blocked off one weekend per month for preventive maintenance updates and refreshers on pre- and post-trip inspections. “They go out with our maintainers to pull off tires, inspect engines, and observe repairs,” he says. “We task our drivers with a lot of responsibility when it comes to the upkeep of our equipment.” Ahlers adds that the 3- to 4-in.-thick operating man-

How do you ensure good mileage from tires?
How long have you been in business?
We use a tire inflation system and Centramatic [wheel balancers].
We’ve been in business since Sept. 26, 2007.
Do you stock any parts for your trucks?
What is the primary focus of your business? We’re a trucking company. We focus on refrigerated loads and anything else that fits in a 53-ft. reefer.
What make and models of truck(s) and trailer(s) do you use in your business? We have a 2012 Volvo VNL 780 and a 2014 Utility 3000R reefer.
John Wayne Lancaster Trucking Owner: John Wayne and Sandy R. Lancaster Location: Broken Arrow, OK Online: www.facebook.com/johnwaynelancaster John Wayne Lancaster Trucking covers 49 states and all of Canada. It hauls a variety of goods including refrigerated cargo.
Do you have regularly scheduled routes, or on-demand delivery?
We don’t stock parts. We stock just the filters for the Puradyne oil filtration system and a couple of gallons of oil and antifreeze on the truck.
How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck or trailer? I’m on a five-year trade-in cycle.
Are you able to find your trucks on the used market? Do you purchase used? Customize them to your specs? Or order new trucks built to your specs?
We have no direct customers; we actually work directly off the loadboards.
No, no and no. Our trucks are new, built to my specs.
How is maintenance handled? What are three challenges you face with your maintenance program?
What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA compliance for your truck and trailer?
We have a maintenance schedule. When we hit that mileage, we use whatever [service] company is available where we are. The challenges are finding someone who knows what they are doing; getting in and out in a timely manner; and finding the time to get it done.
We’re members of OOIDA and NASTC, and I have a manual for CSA that I got from their website (csa.fmcsa. dot.gov) and one from J.J. Keller [that I follow].
How are major repairs handled?
Traveling and getting to see friends and family all over the country that I wouldn’t get to see if I worked in an office from 9 to 5. A reefer gives me many more options of freight to haul. The more options available, the more possibilities for freight.
I search Google for local shops. It is a nightmare to find someplace that isn’t booked for weeks.
How do you handle the maintenance on your trucks and/or trailers to minimize downtime? I call and shop around to see who can get me in the fastest.
What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance? I grease every 12,500 mi. I have a Puradyne oil filtration system so I change the filter on it and do an oil analysis every 25,000 mi.

Inflation monitoring E ven for motivated drivers and technicians, managing tire pressure manually is difficult, says Joshua Carter, CEO of Aperia Technologies. The time of day, outside temperature and gauge variations, among other things, make accurate manual pressure readings difficult. That’s why tire pressure monitoring and inflation systems are such a compelling idea. They eliminate variables, even under the best of circumstances. “Rolling resistance is impacted by inflation in all tire positions,” Carter adds. “While Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration data suggest that maintaining proper tire pressure can result in a 1.4% fuel efficiency increase for a tractor-trailer combination, the bulk of that savings potential comes from trailer and drive tires. If you take into account higher mileages on power units in most operations, the ROI delivered by monitoring and inflation systems is actually quickest on drive axles in most cases, though trailer applications still deliver a rapid breakeven.” Aperia’s Halo Tire Inflator, a self-powered, bolt-on inflation technology for drive and trailer axles, uses a wheel’s rotational motion to pump and maintain optimal tire pressures. According to the company, a 12-month study of mpg and tread wear with a truckload carrier using Halo on a number of tractors resulted in an ROI of less than nine months. ROI estimates for trailers are about 15 months because of their lower annual mileage. The Bendix SmarTire TPMS monitors pressure and temperature inside a tire and communicates tire pressure, along with a deviation value that shows the amount of over- or under-inflation from each tire’s cold inflation pressure, wirelessly to an onboard receiver. Continental Tire the Americas offers its ContiPressureCheck tire pressure monitoring solution, which utilizes sensors mounted inside tractor and trailer tires to provide temperature and pressure readings and send alerts and warnings to the cab. By helping keep tires properly inflated, which reduces rolling resistance, a fuel savings of up to $875 per year is possible with the system at a diesel price of $3.35 per gal. Hendrickson Trailer Commercial Vehicle Systems provides the TireMaxx Pro automatic tire inflation system as an option on its InTraax and VanTraax trailer suspension systems. The system draws from the trailer air

supply to keep tires properly inflated to a preset pressure level based on changing environmental conditions. The company says a typical fleet spec’ing TireMaxx Pro will see a payback in two years or less. Pressure Systems International offers the Meritor Tire Inflation System by P.S.I. The trailer system routes compressed air from the trailer supply to a control box and then into each axle to inflate any tire that falls below a designated pressure setting. The company reports that the estimated ROI for factory-installed systems is 12 months when taking into account fuel, tire life and labor savings, and eliminating service calls. Stemco provides ROI data for its BatRF solution, which includes the AirBat tire pressure monitor, tire sensors, and an in-cab driver alert system. According to the company, its TPMS has a payback of $900 in one year so the cost of $1,100 to $1,200 to outfit a tractor-trailer means the system pays for itself in about 14 months. TireStamp’s TireVigil TPMS and TireVigil TPMS Trailer solutions provide tire pressure monitoring data that fleets can use with analytical software to produce alerts and reports that improve tire maintenance. Wabco’s Integrated Vehicle Tire Pressure Monitoring system reports real-time deviation from desired tire pressure to drivers, and in combination with TrailerGuard telematics reports pressures to a web portal and to fleet managers via text or email. Suppliers have made available online calculators to help determine ROI for tire pressure monitoring and inflation systems using actual fleet data.
