Superior interiors

Conversations I’ve had with a range of industry experts of late indicate that truck cab interiors are going to become “battlegrounds” of sorts in the war to recruit and retain new drivers. “The truck cab is both the work space and living space for drivers, so it has to offer a better ‘mind-body’ solution for both an aging workforce in need of improved ergoFocus is now on nomics as well as offer amenities that appeal to a new, younger generation of improving the potential drivers,” explained Sandeep Kar, global director-commercial vehicle cab environment research for global consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. Kar added that, from the OEM perspective, the cab interior is also one of the last areas that can truly create “differentiation” between makes and models of trucks. For example, Gary Blood, product manager for Caterpillar Trucks, told me that “driver attraction and retention” was a critical metric used in the design of Caterpillar’s new CT660 vocational truck. “Our starting point was driver ergonomics with this truck,” he explained. Particular focus was paid to small interior details, such as eliminating potential “BSR”—short for “buzz, squeak, and rattle”— items as well as moving to round air vents, said Blood, which are said to increase air flow. It may not seem like much, but even little things can give truckers an edge when it comes to recruiting new drivers and holding on to the ones already on board. AT

hermo King has introduced a number of new products designed to improve the integrity of the cold chain. The T-570R system, the ColdCube, and new filtration options designed for fall and winter operation are among the available choices. The T-570R replaces the MD-100, and is designed for 14- to 18-ft. refrigerated truck bodies. According to Thermo King, the unit delivers 30% more capacity and 10% better fuel efficiency than the MD-100. It includes the TSR control system, the TK370 engine, and the X-214 compressor. For those with portable cooling needs, the ColdCube offers a solution. An entry-level refrigeration option, the ColdCube can be plugged into a standard wall outlet for continuous cooling or loaded into a van/truck. To combat fuel switchover and the increased use of additives, Thermo King is offering two new fuel filtra-

Thermo King is also making its Smooth Air evaporator blower assembly available as an aftermarket upgrade on its SB and SB+ trailer units. The company said the unit can save up to 7% in fuel while increasing capacity, improving pulldown, and cutting power usage 24%. hen was the last time you fired a shipper? Granted, working with the varied schedules and needs of customers in the trucking business is a challenging and necessary part of the job of moving freight. It’s almost guaranteed there will be dilemmas arising from time to time, no matter how great the shipper is to work with. Shippers and receivers are without question the heart of our business. And part of our responsibility as motor carriers is to take the good with the bad. Every so often, we’ll have to pull that rabbit out of the hat because a shipper or receiver miscalculated or an unexpected event occurs that throws a cog in the whole logistics chain. When a shipping customer doesn’t fit your business model, however, it will end up costing you more in the long run; for example, when a shipper holds your trucks for hours to get loads on or off, or schedules a pickup and then cancels at the last minute. There will always be those unavoidable situations. But when delays and costs become the norm and you and the shipper can’t resolve the issues, pull your ‘Trump’ card and tell them: “You’re fired!” Tim Brady’s “Trucking Insights” column appears monthly, offering helpful tips on how you can successfully navigate your business in today’s economy. Differing hub specs
I
I n order to keep prices down and profits up, some manufacturers take the easy way out and use the same hub for steel and aluminum hub-piloted wheel fitments. The bean counters of the world are already grumbling about the cost saving associated with the inventory reduction because a hub is a hub to them. But the problem is that this approach creates a few problems down the road that may affect the life and of the Using the proper performance wheel end assembly. First of all, let’s length will cut explain the situation. When aluminum costs, work wheels are installed on a tractor or trailer, there must be additional stud length to accommodate the increased thickness of the wheels. Likewise, the pilotpads on the hub (which centers the wheels) must also be longer so they can support both wheels in a dual application. Using this same configuration for steel wheels works like a charm in the lab and on the factory floor, but there might be some long-term consequences. It’s hard to say which is more problematic in the field, the longer studs or the pilot-pads, so let’s start with the studs. On a steel wheel application with aluminum length studs, more than an inch of thread protrudes beyond the outer edge of the flange nut. Threads are great collectors for dirt so they are rarely clean when it comes time to remove the wheels. After retrieving a special deep-well impact socket, the technician applies a few thousand rpm to loosen the fastener. Even though I don’t have any data to prove it, my guess is that continually dragging the flange nut over an inch of dirty threads at high speed doesn’t help the performance of either the nut or the stud. Which leads me to my next point, and that is the use of
Go to
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
motor oil on hub-piloted wheels. Everyone agrees that a few drops of oil on the end of the stud plays an important role in generating the proper clamping force at the correct torque. When the drops of oil are more than an inch away from the position where the flange nut starts to create bolt tension, how much lubrication actually makes it to the bolted joint? I’ve never tested it, but it would be interesting to see how much clamping force is created when these common situations are regularly combined. And while the longer studs collect dirt and grease, the longer pilot-pads become little corrosion platforms that usually make wheel removal a chore, especially on the inner positions. Steel wheels only need short pilot-pads. When there is another inch of pad extending beyond the wheel, the corrosion buildup makes a tight tolerance even tighter. In severe situations, the technician is forced to lie under the vehicle and physically hammer the inner wheel off the hub. Then they apply a generous coating of anti-corrosive compound on the pilot-pads. This could create clamping force issues if excess material is squeezed between the wheel and the hub. If the fleet runs aluminum wheels in every position, then none of this matters. If steel wheels are part of the system, however, then having the aluminum-length studs and pilot-pads will probably lead to some problems when steel wheels are serviced. Cleaning the components prior to removal may resolve some of the issues, but that still leaves some unanswered questions. Rather than come up with ways to make the longer studs and pilot-pads work better in steel wheel applications, wouldn’t it make more sense to just use the proper length components in the first place? Keeping good drivers Understanding the needs of drivers will cut down on turnover
W
ith the availability of qualified truckers shrinking, small carriers need to look at their hiring criteria and how they’ll retain their current owner-operator fleet at required levels. What will keep a trucker from considering other lease opportunities? It all comes down to a single word: money. But it’s not always about how much you can increase the revenue paid to the trucker. You have levels of revenue
BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR
you must maintain to stay in business, so these truckers have a place to drive. How can you provide the needed revenue to your owner-operators and not reduce the cash you need to operate and grow your carrier? The answer is relatively simple: Don’t contract with a trucker whose revenue requirements exceed what you can afford to pay. To

prevent this, both you, as the carrier, and the prospective owner-operator need to know the numbers. You must know what level of revenue you can provide the owneroperator and the expense figures for the truck and driver. You’ll need to know the following: 1. What is a reasonable takehome salary range for the truckers you want to hire? 2. What is the range of monthly fixed costs the trucker can afford and still have a profit after paying all fixed expenses and his salary
Trucker.com for used equipment listings
(maximum truck and trailer payment, insurance, workers’ comp or occupational hazard, insurance, base plate, cell phone, etc.) ? 3. What is the minimum milesper-gallon spread for a truck that will fit into your hauling rate range? Te trucker will need to provide you with the following: 1. Te owner-operator’s monthly fixed costs, including what he expects for a monthly salary. 2. Te truck’s operational cost per mile, excluding fuel. 3. The miles per gallon of the owner-operator’s truck. Today, the average fixed cost is between $5,000 and $6,500 per month, including the owner-operator’s yearly salary of $40,000. Operational cost is between 10¢ to as high as 35¢ per mile plus fuel. This is dependent on the region and lanes they traverse and fuel mileage of the tractor. Add a trailer, and the fixed cost will increase from $500 to $1,500 per month (depending on type of trailer and operation) plus an additional 4¢ to 12¢ per mile for operational cost. Te other variables will be the load-specific costs of tolls, labor, reefer fuel, pilot cars, etc. Te biggest problem with many owner-operators today is their gross revenue hits critical mass just above their break-even points, and they’re taking home far less than they would if they drove as employee drivers. Tis is a major reason owner-operators churn from carrier to carrier. Te best way to have an owneroperator compensation rate structure that keeps them in your fleet is one that pays the maximum fixed costs and operational range for an owner-operator—providing him a reasonable salary integrated into that fixed cost. However, it must

also leave the trucker a reasonable profit from which to sustain and grow. If the trucker feels fairly compensated and is treated with respect, turnover is reduced significantly. Many of the carriers that have worked this out have turnover rates in the 10% or below range. Match your owner-operator’s
“What will keep a trucker from considering other lease opportunities? It all comes down to money.” business to your business, and it’s a win-win situation. There are a few larger carriers with great owner-operator business models. In order for these programs to work for both carrier and trucker, however, the owner-operators must have a savvy understanding of the trucking business. I’ve seen several good truck drivers fail at these systems because they refused to spend the time learning the business end of trucking. Too many trucking companies look only at the owner-operator’s driving record and PSP score and not at what he knows about the business side of trucking. A great truck driver doesn’t necessarily make a great owner-operator without understanding the numbers and knowing fixed, operational and fuel costs to the penny—and how these numbers relate to the carrier’s rev-

enue and rate structure. Te best way for a small carrier to find and retain the best owner-operators is to test the business knowledge of a prospective trucker. Ten, know the real costs of any trucker under contract with you and make sure the revenue that trucker earns exceeds those costs. Te biggest reason for truckers not knowing their real revenue needs is that the majority have never been taught how to calculate those needs based on actual costs. Tey’re under the impression that it’s all about miles: cost per mile and revenue per mile. In reality, miles are a factor, but they can’t be the only factor. Time is a far greater determinant of revenue and costs. Truckers who want to be successful owner-operators need to be taught this difference before they sign that lease with your carrier. You can hire a great trucker who has no training or background in understanding the business of trucking, and the owner-operator churn will continue—or you can stop the churn. Work with the truckers you have and provide them with that knowledge of the business of trucking. Insist that any new owner-operators you bring on board gain that knowledge through resources you provide them. Ten watch your carrier mature as you are now focused on developing a stronger shipper base and growing your business, rather than spending your time and dollars finding replacements for those truckers who leave. View from the driver’s seat There are more driver-comfort options than ever to spec or retrofit BY DAVID CULLEN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR
T
here are driver-comfort options galore to spec or to retrofit, but driver comfort itself can never be regarded as optional if a truck operator hopes to be comfortable himself behind the wheel let alone attract and retain quality professional drivers today and far into the foreseeable future. One way a fleet operator can start to assess what driver-comfort features and equipment he or she should spec on new trucks would be to picture life in the driver’s seat. Day after day, night after night, what features would likely make the driver’s life on the road safer, more productive and, yes, even perhaps more enjoyable. But a far better approach would be to poll drivers. Ask them what current comfort- and safety-related specs most appeal to them; which ones they could do without; and which ones they have heard of or experienced elsewhere that they would like to see considered as specs or retrofits on their trucks.
OEM EXPERTISE
Do not overlook the expertise of the truck OEMs that supply your vehicles and their local truck dealers as well as that of used-truck retailers. All of these will be more than happy to update you on what’s new in their driver-comfort arsenals as well as which of such specs are gaining in popularity with other buyers of the same types of trucks you run. Caterpillar, which recently entered the truck market as an OEM, puts the cost to replace a single driver as ranging from $2,200 to $20,000. Keep that tidbit in mind when you consider the cost benefit of spec’ing for the comfort of drivers you employ. “Professional drivers spend a

considerable amount of time behind the wheel, but the truck also serves as an office and a living space,” says Frank Bio, product manager-trucks for Volvo Trucks North America. “Driver comfort is a focal point of our entire design process.” Starting from the frame up, he points out that the OEM’s “air-ride cab and frame rail work in concert to provide a smooth, comfortable ride and our unique hood mounting system isolates chassis vibration from the cab to promote an exceptionally quiet environment. “For comfort while driving, we encourage fleets to spec our Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission, which continually monitors road conditions and automatically selects the optimal gear for the engine, lessening driver fatigue by removing the need to constantly shift gears,” he continues. “Our Volvo Enhanced Cruise (VEC) also monitors road conditions and works with the vehicle’s cruise to maintain a safe following distance. The intelligence of the I-Shift and VEC provides an unparalleled peace of mind on the road,” he says. “In addition to a standard ergonomically designed console, Volvo customers can select seats with a ‘back cycler’ to improve circulation and wider seats for added comfort.” Bio notes that Volvo also offers integrated HVAC controls with a “set and forget” design that allows the driver to select a comfortable temperature “the moment they get

into the cab, which is particularly appreciated by drivers in slipseat operations.” He adds that “cab parking heaters and factory-installed electric key-off HVAC systems continue to grow in popularity. Newly optional is the Pre-Trip Assistant, which blinks all working exterior lights as the driver completes his walkaround inspection. According to T.J. Reed, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks, the most popular drivercomfort options available on the Cascadia 125-in. sleeper model include: ❑ Radio audio systems with Bluetooth hands-free cellular phone connectivity. ❑ Premium air-suspension seats with three-chamber air lumbar support and seat heating. ❑ Premium cab insulation package “for an even quieter cab and sleeper environment.” ❑ ParkSmart battery-driven auxiliary HVAC system for quiet, noidling, all-season sleeper comfort. ❑ Thermo King TriPac auxiliary power units. ❑ Hendrickson AirTek front air suspension, which “provides a supple ride” and allows for a vehicle with full air suspensions, front and rear.
HVAC ETC.
“Freightliner typically recommends the above options, as they are all very tangible ways to impact driver comfort,” states Reed. “An auxiliary HVAC system is definitely a must, as it provides year-round comfort. Our ParkSmart battery-powered auxiliary HVAC system is also recommended. It is incredibly quiet and very efficient, running off of four between-rail-mounted batteries that are recharged by the alternator. It is a less expensive option than an APU and is significantly quieter. “A premium driver seat is also highly recommended,” he contin-

The extra adjustability, premium padding, and available seat heating is something a driver will certainly thank you for after a long day. Like the seat, a premium quilted spring mattress should be considered, as a truly restful sleep is priceless.”

Reed notes that optional safety equipment to consider includes: ❑ Electronic stability control. ❑ Roll stability control. ❑ Wabco OnGuard collision mitigation system with adaptive cruise control. ❑ Lane departure warning. ❑ RollTek seat-mounted airbag system. ❑ Steering-wheel mounted supplemental restraint system (SRS) airbag. ❑ Air disc brakes. According to a company spokesperson, standard driver-comfort features on International trucks include an ergonomically designed wing panel used to house radio, switch panel, driver information display, HVAC controls and parking brake controls all within easy reach of the driver as well as air-suspension swivel driver and passenger seats with lumbar control; hydraulic clutch actuation system that allows lower clutch pedal force and smoother

Optional driver-comfort specs on Internationals include Suite interior sleeper trim with couch and Murphystyle fold-down bed with optional hardwood floor; premium insulation package for sleeper compartment that improves noise level and thermal value; and Bluetooth radio with integrated mic in headliner. Driver-comfort specs recommended by International include:
Both cab and sleeper should be spec’ed with an ear to providing a quiet space.

❑ MaxxPower battery-powered HVAC system that provides 6,000 Btu/hr. for cooling and 17,000 Btu/ hr. for heating. ❑ Auto start/stop feature that allows driver to set system temperature and the truck will automatically start the main engine if it becomes too cold or if the batteries are being depleted below a preset level; this assures truck will start in the morning. ❑ Integrated collision-avoidance system. ❑ Front air-ride suspension, which reduces driver fatigue and uneven tire wear. ❑ ABS brakes with roll stability and traction control. ❑ ABS brakes with electronic stability control that is capable of assisting in both rollover and vehicle under- and over-steer situations. ❑ Automated manual transmissions that reduce driver training while improving driver performance and increasing driver retention. According to Peterbilt Motors, the OEM offers a variety of comfort features to “provide drivers the ultimate work environment.” Commonly spec’ed driver-comfort features include either the Prestige or Platinum level interior packages as well as the luxurious 70-in. platinum UltraCab sleeper.
SPECS APLENTY
Other popular driver-comfort features ordered on Petes that the OEM noted include: ❑ Peterbilt’s SmartSound system, which provides acoustic and thermal insulating properties to significantly reduce noise by 50% . “Noise reduction not only improves driver concentration but also dramatically reduces driver fatigue through reduced external stress and distraction.” ❑ Proprietary front air-leaf suspension is “an innovative design with high performance components that deliver significant improvements in ride and overall service mainte-

nance. It has a lower spring rate for better isolation of road inputs and a 20% improvement in ride, while at the same time maintaining the roll stiffness and handling performance of a taper-leaf suspension.” ❑ Diesel-fired heater, which is thermostatically controlled, can be mounted under the bunk to keep the sleeper and cab warm. Jerry Warmkessel, highway products marketing manager for Mack Trucks, says that a key standard feature on Mack models is cab depth that allows drivers to recline seats several degrees more than in the past. “We added four inches just three years ago,” he points out. “A wraparound ergonomic dash as well as suspended throttle and brake pedals all dramatically reduce driver fatigue.”
SEATS COUNT
He reports that the most popular driver-comfort options being ordered this year are premium seats, one-piece windshields, and automated manual transmissions, and the Mack M-Drive automated manual transmission. According to Warmkessel, optional driver-comfort features the OEM strongly recommends include the Sears Atlas 80 seat and the batteryoperated ‘IdleFree’ key off HVAC system on sleeper truck, as well as
Don’t overlook the value of cab storage. Bendix Adaptive Cruise Control and air disc brakes. “To be profitable in trucking today, trucking companies need to maximize fuel economy, and offer drivers comfortable and productive work environments,” states a spokesperson for Kenworth Truck. He relates that the most popular driver-comfort options being ordered this year include: ❑ QuietCab package, standard with premium interior trim packages. ”Many fleets order this for a quieter cab, less stress and strain on the drivers. It includes additional firewall insulation and floor covering with sound-deadening materials and cowl blanket.” ❑ Extended Day Cab, which provides an extra 6 in. of length com-

pared to the standard Kenworth day cab. The Extended Day Cab also offers five more inches of cab height, two additional inches behind the wheel, up to 21 deg. of recline in the driver’s seat, and two extra cubic feet of storage behind the driver’s seat. Optional driver-comfort features recommended by Kenworth include: ❑ Xenon high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps provide 75% more light and last 11 times longer than sealed beam lamps. ❑ Proprietary Kenworth AG130 front air suspension “utilizes an innovative design and advanced technology to reduce vibration into the cab and onto the chassis. This helps provide a smooth ride without sacrificing the feel of the road that customers expect from a Kenworth.” ❑ Kenworth GT700 series seats are “made to the OEM’s specifications and provide drivers with the ability to fine-tune their ride experience. The driver seat is something truck fleets and operators can’t afford to ignore since it’s a critical component in helping drivers stay comfortable, alert and focused while driving.” ❑ Kenworth GT701, GT702, and GT703 seats offer a range of options and features, including “an advanced air suspension system that can automatically adjust to the weight of the driver—meeting the needs of individual as well as team drivers. It also offers an adjustable shock that provides drivers with a full range of height adjustments.” Pay attention to those and all seats—and above all to who sits in them. Driver turnover rates have been climbing right along with the freight recovery. The American Trucking Assns. has reported the turnover rate for over-the-road drivers rose to 79% in this year’s second quarter, marking the third quarter in a row of increased churn in the driver market. Wheels
F
For years, fleet managers paid very little attention to wheels. As long as their vehicles kept rolling down the road, that was all they cared about. But that was then, and in today’s trucking, there are considerations that make choosing the proper wheel a critical decision. The wrong wheel can add unnecessary weight to the entire rig, weight that can cost you in both fuel and lost revenue. Aesthetics is another area of concern: How easy is it to keep a wheel clean and polished? This can add or subtract from the image a carrier displays to its customers. “Fleets are all looking to lower the lifetime operating costs of their vehicles,” says Brian Thomas, marketing communications specialist for Alcoa Wheel Products. “Lightweight aluminum wheels from Alcoa improve productivity and lower lifetime operating costs. The lighter the truck and trailer, the more cargo it can carry.” Alcoa offers Dura-Bright wheels, which include a no-polish, easy-maintenance surface, the company says. “Labor savings coupled with reduced need for cleaning supplies really add up,” Thomas says. “DuraBright wheels enhance the appearance of the fleet and equipment, further improving driver satisfaction and retention.” Bob Flynn, director of product management for Accuride Corp., says customers are “... looking for ways to improve their bottom line through reduced weight, reduced complexity, and/or reduced maintenance costs.” Accuride’s Accu-Lite wheels are the lightest commercial aluminum wheels available, Flynn points out, adding that the company tests its wheels to standards many times the SAE minimum requirement, depending on application. The company’s Duplex wide-base 22.5 x 14 in. aluminum wheels weigh only 59 lbs., Flynn says. They have been modified to allow mounting from either side on the 2-in. outset version. The 0-in. outset wheel model is designed for compatibility with the next X14 tandem drive axle from Meritor, he adds. To help reduce maintenance cost, Accuride’s AccuArmor aluminum wheel treatment offers soap and water cleanup, scratch and chemical resistance, and protection

from filiform corrosion. “The new Accu-Armor is designed to be a complementary product to our current Accu-Shield aluminum wheel coating, which is designed to protect the finish of [typically] polished aluminum wheels. This eliminates the need for frequent wheel repolishing and offers easy cleanup with just soap and water,” says Flynn.
TRIPLE PROTECTION
Hayes-Lemmerz International is zeroing in on customer demands for more durability and value in its wheel offerings. “We have made our CentruCoat finish standard on our wheels, giving our customers the most durable, corrosion-resistant finish on steel wheels in the industry at no extra cost,” says Thomas Heck, director of engineering-Americas. “This finish is a triple layer of protection with a pretreat layer followed by an epoxy electrocoat primer and topped by a very durable acrylic powder coat.” Fleet managers need to squeeze every bit of mileage out of every drop of diesel. “To assist in improving fuel economy, we have increased the use of high-strength steels in our wheels and have implemented several design changes to reduce wheel weight and, as a result, reduce the unsprung wheel end weight,” says Heck. At Webb Wheel Products, customer service remains a top priority, according to Marshall Boheler, vice president of sales and marketing. Customer concerns include on-time delivery, a two-week or less lead time on prodFOR MORE INFORMATION, ucts, and consistent VISIT THESE WEB SITES: and competitive ACCURIDE CORP. pricing. To help www.accuridecorp.com with these concerns, the company ALCOA WHEEL PRODUCTS has created dediwww.alcoawheels.com cated plans for aftermarket customHAYES-LEMMERZ INTERNATIONAL ers and continues www.hayes-lemmerz.com to research ways to make its products WEBB WHEEL PRODUCTS and procedures www.webbwheel.com more cost-efficient, says Boheler.

Why better? In the past, when it came to heavy-duty truck parts, you had the good, the better and the best. This left you with low price, low quality or high price, high quality. At Alliance Truck Parts, we believe there’s a right way: good price, better quality. Then, we back each part with a nationwide warranty and make them available at over 800 locations. That’s
