The study did not address truck drivers specifically, but a connection will certainly be made.

Thanks to emissions regulations, the industry is finally getting past the stigma of “dirty diesel” increasing cancer risk, and now the industry has this to overcome as it tries to solve the driver shortage.

If it’s not one obstacle to overcome, it’s another. AT

“While our F-250 pickups are already available with a CNG conversion option,” Dimarco told American Trucker, “we heard that F-Series Super Duty buyers also wanted to add CNG-capable half-ton pickups to their fleets.”

Therefore, starting with the 2014 model year, F-150s powered by Ford’s 3.7L V6 can be spec’d with a factoryinstalled gaseous fuel prep package that will allow the pickups to operate on either CNG or LPG. That package includes hardened valves and valve seats as well as pistons and rings to enable running on either gasoline or alternative fuel via separate fuel systems, per Ford.

The morning-long exercise was designed to showcase what the OEM terms the “Built Ford Tough” performance on a test track.

“Our new pickups go through over 9 million mi. of testing, including ‘work-simulated’ tests here at our 4,000-acre MPG facility,” said Phil Collarena, vehicle line directortruck. “At MPG, there are 110-plus mi. of vehicle-test surfaces. These provide for durability, hill-climbing, gradeability and off-road evaluations. There’s a high-speed oval as well.”

Turning to sales, Doug Scott, truck & SUV marketing manager, declared that “Ford continues to dominate the pickup landscape with [sales] up 22% year-over-year for August.” He noted that over 499,000 F-Series trucks had been sold by the OEM year-to-date.

According to Scott, Ford’s breadand-butter F-150 model is the “fastest growing” model in the light-duty, under $30,000 [MSP] pickup segment.

oes your small motor carrier have a warehouse onsite that’s underutilized? If so, it could be an additional source of revenue.

Unless that warehouse is constantly used on a daily basis, there are likely things like old tires or truck parts that are taking up space that could otherwise be rented.

If you have two or three shippers who regularly ship LTL with your carrier, why not ask them if they’d like to rent warehouse space. They can store goods or products that allow them to combine several shipments into a larger shipment that might offer bulk shipping discounts. Perhaps you can store and supervise the consolidation of shipments from multiple shippers heading in the same direction into a single trailer. This can save money for your shippers and fuel for your trucks.

You may be able to partition the warehouse, making it a mini-distribution center, or rent portions to shippers who need space. You can also offer better service than most of the huge trucking companies by allowing “retrieval and replacement” for shippers’ items (such as business records) in long-term storage.

Engines unveiled C ummins announced the launch of a global heavy-duty engine platform, the in-line six G Series. Engines in the series will be available in 10.5L and 11.8L displacements “to meet a broad variety of on-highway and off-highway global market requirements and emissions standards.”

While the initial G Series engines are designed to run on diesel fuel, Cummins told American Trucker that “a natural gas option may come later.”

For on-highway markets, the G Series heavy-duty platform will be rolled out as the Cummins ISG11 and Cummins ISG12.

According to the engine maker, these models will offer a power range from 290 hp. to 512 hp. “in a compact and lightweight package” and will be available to “meet global variations in emissions requirements.”

At launch in 2014, Cummins said the ISG11 and ISG12 engines will meet Euro III, Euro IV and China NS4 emissions requirements.

Cummins added that versions of the engines designed to meet future U.S. EPA rules are also in development.

Queried for a more specific date on the rollout of on-highway G Series engines in the U.S., Jeff Jones, vice president-North America Engine Business, said that “the ISG12 is being developed to be compliant with EPA 2017 standards. Specific launch timing has not been determined yet.”

Cummins also unveiled its ISV5.0, a 5L V8 diesel that extends the engine maker’s range to cover various North American commercial light- and medium-duty vehicle

The ISV5.0 will give Cummins an offering in the light- to-medium-duty range. applications, up through Class 5 GVW ratings, with a powerplant that the company said is engineered to “deliver performance and a low total cost of ownership” for buyers.

Cummins said the ISV5.0 will be aimed at customers in the U.S. and Canada and will be certified to the near-zero NOx and PM emissions levels required by EPA. According to the engine maker, the ISV5.0, slated for a fourth quarter launch next year, will meet federal greenhouse gas requirements through 2016 as well as 2015 California Air Resources Board standards, including onboard diagnostics.

Applications for the new engine will include step vans and mediumduty trucks as well as school buses and Class A RVs that had typically been spec’d with gasoline engines.

Dave Crompton, vice president & general manager-Engine Business, said the engine has been designed to easily fit where a comparable V8 or V10 gasoline engine was previously installed.

The order authorizes Landi Renzo to install its CNG system in 2014 modelyear Ford F-450, F-550, and F-650 vehicles with the Ford 6.8L engine.

Following a previous announcement of EPA bi-fuel certification for the 2014 model-year Ford F-250 and F-350, the company’s U.S. certifications now cover Ford trucks with 6.2L and 6.8L engines.

Telogis said the platform combines strategic and dynamic planning, advanced mobile apps for logging hours of service, and other compliance requirements while offering easy-to-build mobile forms, commercial navigation, and telematics.

fficiency is becoming a far more critical and encompassing watchword in the full-size commercial van segment—and not just as it applies to fuel economy.

According to Mark Mallie, head of commercial product planning for Chrysler’s Ram Trucks division, efficiency is driving van improvements ranging from enlarged cargo-carrying capacity, lower step-in heights, and improved cab functionality to more engine options for boosting both fuel economy and overall van performance.

“We surveyed our van customers and found that while fuel economy ranks number one on the list of their demands in the small cargo van segment, it’s only ranked fourth in the full-size segment,” Mallie explained.

“It’s not that they don’t want better fuel economy; they want greater efficiency first,” he stressed. “For example, they want a wider cargo area not only so delivery operators can load palletized cargo between the wheel wells, but also to provide a wider center aisle when the van is set

For that reason, the Ram ProMaster body is shaped in what Mallie called a “shoe box” style. This allows the OEM to maximize both the height and width of the van’s interior, creating greater and more efficient interior space.

Ram is also in the process of rolling out a 3L inline I-4 4-cyl. diesel engine option to complement the standard 3.6L Pentastar V6 gasoline power plant. Depending on their duty cycle, these options can provide greater efficiency to van operators.

The taxman is coming

T

Thirty-four years before George Harrison ultimately popularized the term “taxman” in the hit of the same name with The Beatles, who would have known that the Revenue Act would start an endless cycle of taxation on tires. The first Federal Excise Tax (FET) in 1932 was based on the physical weight of the tire, and it applied to all tires and inner In 1956, the Momentum grows tubes.

This amount of money would more than double by 1967 with just over $503 million in tire FET for the year.

By the late 1970s, the government was collecting more than $800 million annually in FET from tires, inner tubes and tread rubber. This revenue stream continued until the Surface Transportation Assistance Act of 1982 eliminated the FET on tires that weighed less than 40 lbs., non-highway tires and tread rubber. At the time, FET collections were around $616 million; 10 years later, revenue dropped to just under $280 million.

The American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 changed the method of calculating the tax from physical weight to carrying capacity in order to simplify the process of setting the final tax rate while it remained revenue neutral.

This model is still used today and by most accounts, it has proven to be uniform and consistent for the calculation and collection of FET on tires.

Recently, there has been inside-the-Beltway talk of bringing back the good old days of the 1970s when FET collections on tires, inner tubes and tread rubber were

consistently in the range of $700 million to $800 million. Let’s say there are about 16 million replacement truck tires sold in the U.S. each year and the average FET is $25 per tire. That’s $400 million in tax revenue that the government collects from fleets on an annual basis.

With about 15 million retreads accounting for about 360 million lbs. of tread rubber, a $1/lb. tax on tread rubber could almost double the annual FET collections (and add about $24 to the price of every retread).

The tire and trucking industries must be prepared for an FET increase on truck tires and the possibility it will be expanded to cover tread rubber as well as other tires. In July, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) testified before Congress that it projects the Highway Trust Fund will be unable to meet all of its obligations by 2015. According to the CBO, Congress has transferred $41 billion from the general fund of the Treasury to the Highway Trust Fund since 2008 and has authorized another infusion of $12.6 billion in 2014. By 2015, the transfer would need to be in the range of $15 billion.

As far as the government is concerned, better fuel mileage and fewer miles traveled mean less federal gas and fuel tax, so the shortfall must be addressed. And even though the FET collected on tires represents a small percentage of the total for the Highway Trust Fund, history has shown that it can raise significant money when the tax is increased and expanded to cover tread rubber. With all of the other inside-the-Beltway budget demands, it’s hard to imagine Congress continuing the practice of supplementing the Highway Trust Fund when the taxman has such an obvious solution to the problem. Proper plan Getting the specs right ensures safe moves

W

What do you do when you need to move a 14-ft.-wide, 15-ft.-high, 140,000-lb. excavator? How about hauling a 130-ton rough terrain crane onto job sites in Minnesota and North Dakota? For a growing number of customers throughout the lower 48 and Canada, the answer is to call heavy-haul specialist Kivi Bros. Trucking.

“For the excavator move, we had to use a combination vehicle that was 127 ft. long from bumper to bumper,” says Derek Kivi, operations manager, who, along with his brothers Tyler and Dakota, runs the Duluth, MN-based, family-owned business. “The total gross weight of the combination was 220,000 lbs. We actually move that machine 150 to 200 mi. at a time for a local construction company, often into facilities with roads you wouldn’t think you would even get into with a pickup.”

Founded in 1995 with three trucks, Kivi Bros. Trucking has grown to a fleet of 40 tractors and 65 trailers. A portion of the company’s equipment, dedicated to heavy-haul operations, consists of Kenworth and Peterbilt tractors powered by Cummins ISX engines with 600 hp.

and 2,050 lbs.-ft. of torque; Eaton 13- and 18-speed transmissions; 46,000-lb.-capacity Hendrickson rear axles and Watson & Chalin 20,000lb. tag axles; and Michelin wide base single steer tires.

Kivi Bros. Trucking utilizes equipment from Fontaine Heavy-Haul Trailer Co., including a variety of multiple axle lowboy trailers for its heavy-haul operations. One of the more specialized units in the fleet is a 12-axle configuration that can haul a payload of 140,000 lbs. It also has all-aluminum flatbeds and step decks from Mac Trailer Manufacturing, along with 40-ft. frameless aluminum end dumps that haul commodities such as road salt, aggregate, fill material, and grain with an average weight of 25 tons.

PLANNING FOR SAFETY “A lot of our heavy-haul loads require planning for equipment, routes and permits long in advance,” Kivi says. “With a broad range of applications and customer needs, it’s a daily challenge to make sure we have all of the proper vehicles, and to keep everything coordinated and on schedule.”

“There are a lot of regulations associated with heavy hauls and with standard loads as well,” Kivi states.

“Today, especially, CSA scores are so important that we spend a lot of time making sure we’re doing everything we can to operate safely. Even though the majority of our equipment is less than two years old, we do not want to be sitting on the side of the road with these kinds of loads.”

Earlier this year, Kivi relates, safety was part of the reason the company began spec’ing Eaton UltraShift Plus automated transmissions in its newest over-the-road and regional tractors. “We believe the automated transmissions make the vehicles safer,” he states. “It’s simple—if drivers don’t have to worry about shifting, they can focus on driving.

“It’s also been beneficial to have transmissions that always shift at the optimum point for maximizing fuel mileage,” Kivi adds. “Some drivers may not have the experience to always shift at the correct rpm.

T Create business-aptitude surveys for your drivers to determine their level of knowledge in business management.

T Develop a regular schedule of courses and classes designed as 24/7, remote, mobile-learning opportunities for your drivers.

T Make sure this educational program is simple for both the trucker and your carrier to administrate. Technology is great, but if the learning curve is too complicated, very few drivers will participate.

One oil does not fit all Truckers may need to stock multiple viscosities going forward

omplications are never a good thing in trucking, especially when they involve routine maintenance tasks such as changing engine oil. That’s one of the reasons lubricant makers struggled mightily over the years to craft engine oil blends that not only met strict chemical limits related to exhaust aftertreatment technology, but also to make them backward compatible so they could be used in new and old engines alike.

Going forward with Proposed Category 11 (PC-11) oils, however, that won’t necessarily be the case.

There’s not one but two new blends being created in the category to meet federal greenhouse gas (GHG) rules for heavy trucks being phased in between model years 2014 and 2018.

“Unfortunately, this trend is a sign of the times,” explains Mike Wyant, technical services manager for Universal Lubricants. “It’s very possible that an end user will need to carry multiple engine oils to cover the requirements. We’ve seen that occur in automatic transmission fluids and other lubricants.”

The GHG rules jointly announced by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Dept. of Transportation back in 2010 cover three distinct sets of trucks, each with their own compliance timeline.

For tractor-trailers, those engine and vehicle standards begin with the 2014 model year and establish a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fuel consumption by the 2018 model year.

The rules for heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans call for separate gasoline and diesel truck standards to be phased in starting with the 2014 model year. These standards would be expected to achieve up to a 10% reduction for gasoline vehicles and 15% reduction for diesel vehicles by the 2018 model year.

Finally, the standards for vocational vehicles would kick in for the

2014 model year and are targeted to meet up to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by the 2018 model year.

TARGETED IMPROVEMENT Meeting such fuel economy mandates necessitated change across numerous truck components, systems, and materials, especially engine oils, says Dan Arcy, OEM technical manager for Shell Lubricants.

“The PC-11 performance category is being developed with targeted improvements in several performance areas,” he explains.

Such changes include: T High-temperature oxidation control, as some engines will be running up to 18 deg. F hotter.

T Protection from adhesive wear, as a move to low viscosity or “thinner” oils requires good protection against wear and metal-to-metal contact.

T Improved aeration control, as it will boost the ability of engine oil to release air that can get trapped within it. This requirement may necessitate the replacement of current aeration testing procedures.

T Boosted shear stability, as the mechanical shear of polymers used in current oil can result in the loss of viscosity, meaning the oil becomes too thin. That may also require changes to current shear stability tests.

ries,” says Arcy, with one featuring oil viscosities much like what exists today and the other formulated with lower (thinner) oil viscosity geared to provide improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

“If you look at the performance improvements targeted for PC-11 oil, we will need new or additional oxidation inhibitors, new or improved anti-wear components, and a different mix of base oils, to name a few of the changes,” Arcy stresses.

All of that may impact the backward compatibility of the new PC-11 oils, especially the lower viscosity grades, he says.

“We will need to look at PC-11 a little differently since we are looking at two subcategories,” Arcy explains.

“The heavier viscosity grades are targeted at being fully backward compatible. For example, a PC-11 SAE 15W-40 will be able to be used in applications that call for a CJ-4 performance SAE 15W-40. In addition, the PC-11 SAE 15W-40 will provide the additional benefits listed above.”

Yet the second subcategory, or lower viscosity, PC-11 oil may not be backward compatible, he warns.

“These thinner oils may not provide the protection in older equipment,” Arcy explains. “At this time, the engine manufacturers have not provided details on which of the older engines may or may not allow the use of PC-11 low-viscosity oil.”

NO DECISION YET Still, Arcy believes it may be a little too early to tell whether a oneoil-fits-all engine oil strategy is definitely a thing of the past. “This really will be determined by what happens with the backward compatibility issue,” he says. “It may be that for a period of time, a year or two, a fleet may have to carry two different oils, one for legacy engines and one for the new lower CO2, more fuel-efficient engines.”

“PC-11 will be unprecedented,” he says. “The new category will be the first of its kind to establish two new subcategories, initially being identified as PC-11A and PC-11B. The PC-11A will be a traditional robust subcategory with typical viscosity grades like a 15W-40 or 5W-40. But the PC-11B will be more of a ‘fuel economy’ version, with lower viscosities and lower high temperature/high shear (HTHS) values. The viscosity grades will drop down to 10W-30, 5W-30, and perhaps even lower.”

Mark Nyholm, technical product manager for Amsoil, points out that the reason the PC-11B formula most likely won’t or can’t be backward compatible is because gaining better fuel economy is the research goal.

“It is industry known that lowering the HTHS number can improve fuel economy; however, it can also reduce wear protection,” he says.

“Some engines [from the] past were not designed to operate on lower HTHS and viscosity numbers. Additionally, older engines still on the road [using] lower viscosity oils may not get the proper wear protection they need for continued service.

As the new PC-11 oil category is developed, scientists will work to maximize fuel economy benefits.

That or their oil consumption may increase significantly, resulting in cost increases from additional oil as well as increased emissions out of the exhaust pipe.”

According to Len Badal, commercial sector manager for Chevron Products Co., a fleet may have to stock two engine oils if it decides to use high temp/high shear products to gain higher potential fuel economy performance.

“In a case like this, the fleet may only be able to use the new oils in newer engines and with ones that the OEMs are comfortable with recommending these lower HTHS products in their engines,” he explains. “If a fleet also operates older

engines, then the fleet may have to use a second oil with normal HTHS to protect those engines and ensure they perform appropriately.”

COMPLICATING MATTERS Universal’s Wyant adds, though, that the adoption of truck fuels such as natural gas complicates the development of future engine oils to a degree as well—and may force the need to use multiple engine oils.

Wyant points out that natural gas engine oils, in particular, occupy an unusual spot as they are somewhat of a hybrid between diesel fuel and gasoline oils. “They are formulated differently to handle the different issues associated with the combustion of natural gas,” he explains.

Chevron’s Badal thinks most alternative fueled engines—even in the natural gas space—should be able to use the new PC-11 formulation, though important caveats remain.

“PC-11 oils will be able to handle all the fuel types that fleets may opt to run, from biodiesel blends (assuming a maximum 80/20 mix of petroleum-based diesel and biodiesel) to dimethyl ester,” he says. “Fleets should not worry about utilizing these fuels with their diesel engines, assuming they use premium PC-11 diesel engine oils for lubrication.”

cover story since it depends on the type of engine technology being deployed. “If a spark-ignited CNG (compressed natural gas) engine is being used, then an approved CNG oil should be utilized to prevent spark plug fouling, valve guttering, and ash buildup on the piston crowns,” he explains, as such deposits “are detrimental to CNG engines and can cause early potential engine failure.”

But Badal points out that if the truck has been adapted for dualfuel engines running on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel or just pure LNG, then a fleet may be able to use PC-11 oils depending on engine configuration.

“If a fleet has a mix of diesel and CNG engines, the fleet will most likely have to stock two oils to provide optimum performance,” he says.

“But if the fleet has a combination of diesel and pure LNG or diesel/LNG dual-fuel engines, then it may be able to use one oil—PC-11—for both.”

DIFFERENT FUELS, DIFFERENT OILS Amsoil’s Nyholm explains that one reason for the differences between pure diesel and natural gas engine oils is the difference in the by-products of combustion and the additive package components, such as detergents and dispersants.

“For example, diesel oils have chemistry to combat the negative effects of soot, a by-product of combustion, in the engine oil,” he notes.

“By contrast, natural gas engines do not have these same chemistries, as soot is not a by-product of natural gas combustion.”

Understanding the different by-products of combustion also requires lubricant manufacturers to study their interaction in the engine’s oil sump and modify the additive packages to protect the engine from wear and corrosion. “Different fuels burn at different temperatures, exposing the lubricant to varying temperatures,” Nyholm adds. “Oxi-

Lubricant makers confess the real struggle will be to get the end user to accept the lighter-weight, lowviscosity oils themselves.

“While there is certainly a noticeable trend of lighter viscosity engine oils entering the marketplace, there is still an adherence to heavier weight engine oils,” says Universal’s Wyant. “There are end users convinced that lighter weight engine oils won’t perform adequately for engine protection, [thus] there will tend to be that stigma of the lighter weight oils not meeting the needs of the engine.”

That view is echoed by Amsoil’s Nyholm. “As long as there is the belief that my application is more severe than yours, SAE 40 viscosities will not go away,” he says. “There are people today who still do not budge away from the old 15W-40.”

GROWING ACCEPTANCE Shell’s Arcy points out, however, that there’s been increasing use of lighter viscosity oils such as SAE 10W-30 grades simply because they offer improved fuel efficiency and pumpability versus SAE 15W-40 blends.

manufacturers either factory-fill with SAE 10W-30 or offer it as an option for factory-fill,” he adds. “And most of the Class 8 truck/engine manufacturers allow SAE 10W-30 as an option or primary recommendation for service-fill.”

Over time, Arcy expects to see an increase in the use of light viscosity oils and a decline in the use of heavier viscosity oils. “Fleets are always looking for ways to reduce their operating costs and/or maximize operating efficiencies of their fleet,” he explains. “There will continue to be movement in the direction of products, operating conditions, etc., that can help improve fuel economy, driving a reduction in operating cost. Improved efficiency by optimizing maintenance intervals and improving uptime will continue to help improve the bottom line.”

Looking to the future, Arcy says there will be a continued push towards lower viscosity, synthetic or semi-synthetic lubricants that will provide improved fuel economy benefits and help reduce CO2 emissions.

“Those issues are big in the engine oil industry,” adds Universal’s Wyant. “End users desire longer drain intervals and better fuel economy. Thus, future categories will continue to optimize and further improve engine oil quality in those directions.” AT

E

very fleet recognizes the critical role tires and proper tire care play in keeping trucks up and running.

Poor tire inflation, for example, not only affects overall fuel economy but shortens tire life expectancy.

Yet Dan Engelsen and his fellow engineers working at shop tool supplier Innovative Products of America noticed something else when talking to maintenance professionals: Few had all the key elements for proper tire care in place.

“We noticed in our conversations with fleets that there always seemed to be a missing link when it came to

their tire care practices,” Engelsen says. “We found many of them didn’t quite connect all the tire-related dots in their maintenance operation, which could add up to bigger problems down the road.”

He likens it to the famous “butterfly effect” coined by Edward Lorenz, an American mathematician and meteorologist. Lorenz theorized that the impact of small, incremental events can multiply in intensity over time. “We found many were well aware of the overall impact proper tire inflation has on fuel economy and on tire life, but some didn’t realize how proper tire diameter on dual tire sets could generate similar impact,” Engelsen explains.

faster; likewise, 10% overinflation will cause 5% faster wear. Either way, faster wear leads to premature removal of tires, increased maintenance costs, and potentially unwanted CSA violations for low tread depth.

Furthermore, the U.S. Government Accountability Office estimates that 25% to 50% of truck tires are underinflated by 8 psi or more. Indeed, Goodyear and Michelin both note that research shows running tires that are 20% underinflated will reduce tire life by up to 50%.

Another issue addressed by Innovative Products’ white paper is how to ensure dual tire sets are matched together with equal diameter.

“It’s easy to overlook the importance of diameter,” Engelsen says. “But if one tire in the set is 1/2 in. smaller in diameter than the other, that smaller tire will get ‘dragged’ by the larger one by about 5.2 ft. for every mile traveled. That creates several issues, from reduced fuel economy to reduced tread on the dragged tire as well as greater wear on the one doing the dragging.”

Again, he stresses that these are some of the small things that can eventually lead to bigger problems down the road.

ith Lorenz’s maxim in mind, Engelsen and the engineering team at Innovative Products crafted a white paper dubbed “The Butterfly Effect on Tire Maintenance.” The paper features as much tire care-related knowledge as possible and serves as a reference tool for fleet maintenance personnel.

For example, the paper focuses on the importance of tire pressure gauge accuracy and how the proper care of gauges can directly impact the proper care of tires over time. “The gold standard, if you will, is a gauge with only a 1% swing in tolerance,” Engelsen says. “That, of course, depends on the quality of the gauge you purchase and how you keep it calibrated over time. Many times tire inflation gauges get tossed around in a shop and get damaged—and that can affect the accuracy of the readings.”

He points out that a gauge that is off by 3% can potentially report a 12% variance in tire pressure among a full set of duals (four tires total) on either trailer axles or the rear axles of a highway tractor.

aintaining clean lube oil in today’s emissionscompliant engines is a tall challenge, notes Martin Barris, engine liquid & hydraulics product director at the Donaldson Co. “With the potential for multiple sources of contamination—externally and internally generated debris, oil degradation and even combustion by-products—lube oil filters are required to perform in a wide range of contaminant conditions,” he says.

Ted Loftis, director of engineering at Cummins Filtration, which makes Fleetguard brand oil filters, agrees that lube filtration is more important today. “While contamination is introduced into the lube system due to the combustion process, engine wear and spent additives,” he states, “the advent of some emissions control strategies have led to more contaminant entering from the combustion chamber and making its way into the lube oil.”

It is generally understood that finer fibers are required to attain finer filtration, relates John Gaither, director of heavy-duty engineering for Fram Filtration, makers of Luber-finer heavy-duty oil filters. “Synthetic media, such as micro-glass and polyester, have proven to offer exceptional filtration and can provide high-filtering efficiency without increasing flow restriction,” he says.

Donaldson’s Martin Barris calls the use of synthetic, wire-backed filter media in lube oil filters a “significant trend for high performance during extended drain intervals. Synthetic filter media fibers and resin system adhesives are far less susceptible to the damaging effects of long-term exposure to hot engine oil,” he explains.

Kevin Kroger, president and COO of Puradyn Filter Technologies, points out that when it comes to meeting the goals of reducing solid contaminants and providing proper lubrication for extended periods of time, bypass oil filtration is nearly impossible to beat. “Bypass oil filtration reduces engine wear [while] optimizing performance,” he says. “Companies that use bypass oil filtration have reported as much as an 84% reduction in lubricant oil consumption with the same percentage reduction in used-oil disposal.”

W

hile flamboyance might work in Hollywood, it’s certainly not a trait that will help a tow truck operator gain much traction with customers.

Yet Steve Sedberry feels that while hard work, determination, and a willingness to venture out into the dead of night or in bad weather remain the stock in trade for tow truck companies, standing out from the crowd doesn’t hurt.

“Very few companies out here operate Navistar International trucks,” he says. “So right there I found a way to look different from everyone else.”

Sedberry is also partial to International models for another, more heartfelt reason—his father, John Morgan “Buddy” Sedberry Jr., loved them dearly. In December 2001, shortly after his dad passed away,

Steve Sedberry dedicated a 1997 International model equipped with a Century bed in his father’s honor.

Still, Sedberry wanted to put together a truck he could make a statement with—and that opportunity arose in 2012. Through his dealership Tri-State International, he found a 2010 LoneStar tractor model that was coming up for sale in Arizona.

The unique front end of the LoneStar appealed to Sedberry, so he flew out to Arizona to retrieve it—driving the then all-white tractor back to Tennessee so it could be turned into a monster tow truck.

“It took about 9 months for us to convert it into a tow truck,

with three of those months spent by me just thinking about what body style I wanted as well as how the colors should look,” Sedberry says.

Tri-State had to stretch out the tractor’s frame and add a tag axle, while Crouch’s Wrecker Sales developed a uniquely shaped body for the vehicle.

A burgundy and white paint scheme topped off with an artistically shaped “cow catcher” for the front end completed the look for the truck dubbed “W-20” in honor of it being the 20th wrecker in Buddy’s fleet.

icing on the cake for the Sedberry family business, which began in 1963. Originally named Buddy’s Esso, the shop was a full-service station that focused on selling fuel and vehicle maintenance work.

“We had an old 1965 Ford as a ‘pusher truck’ to get vehicles in and out of the service bay, but no true wrecker,” Sedberry says.

That all changed when he joined his dad in the family trade in 1973.

For just $800, Buddy purchased a used wrecker truck. By 1977, the family changed the company’s name to Buddy’s Wrecker Service to reflect its growing full-time focus on the tow truck business.

In 1978, the firm purchased the first and only hydraulic wrecker in Southeast Kentucky and Northwest Tennessee. By 1979, the company purchased a 1976 Holmes 750 25-ton mechanical wrecker

crane mounted on a Kenworth tractor and began work in the heavyduty wrecker business.

Two decades later, the company relocated to a 5,000-sq.-ft. building on three acres along the local Highway 51 bypass.

By 2007, Buddy’s Wrecker had expanded its garage and added a repair facility. Today, the company offers heavy towing, heavy-duty recovery, mobile crane service, and auto tow ing and

roadside assistance in Northwest Tennessee, Southwest Kentucky, Southeast Missouri and Southwest Illinois. It also operates a full-service auto repair facility servicing customers in Union City and Obion County, TN. And W-20 is just helping spread the word that much further, Sedberry says.

“It hadn’t gone 15 mi. up the highway after it left Tri-State for the first time to come to our location when I started getting calls about it,” he explains. “It’s a great advertising piece for us when it goes up and down the road.”
