New rules
Tim Brady Business Editor tbrady@writeuptheroad.com
W
Watch out. The trucking rulebook is going to get thicker again in 2015. But with Congress in Republican hands come January, expect a slowdown in the pace of new motor carrier regulations. That’s the view of Dave Osiecki, executive vice president and chief of national advocacy for the American Trucking Assns. Still, he said, the industry will begin to feel 2015 will see the impact of some big rule changes over the next two years. its fair share First, the long-awaited final rule of regulatory mandating the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) by drivers and fleets is change now expected to be published in late 2015. Once published, a two-year window will be established, during which all carriers would have to install ELDs in their trucks. Also, a final version of the drug and alcohol clearinghouse rule, which would allow motor carriers to see if driver applicants have ever tested positive for drugs or alcohol, is also likely to be published in 2015. This may result in a smaller pool of applicants, though, a side effect the industry may experience in the 2017-2018 timeframe. A rule regarding the screening of commercial drivers for sleep apnea is also forthcoming as is a rule on electronic stability control systems. And all of this is just the tip of the regulatory iceberg approaching in 2015. Whew! AT

Daimler to add medium-duty engine
Too fatigued or too ill to drive?
H
aving recently added a heavyduty transmission to its existing Detroit Powertrain lineup of heavy-duty axles and engines, Daimler Truck North America will add medium-duty engines, according to Martin Daum, DTNA president and CEO. Based on the newest generation of Mercedes-Benz MD diesels currently sold in Europe, the DD5 and DD8 will be introduced in Freightliner trucks in 2016, rolling out to the other DTNA brands (Western Star, Thomas Built Buses and Freightliner Custom Chassis) by 2018. Although details weren’t available, Daum said the European engines would be reworked specifically for the North American market. In addition to meeting U.S. emissions requirements, the new engines will also be ready to meet the 2017 greenhouse gas emissions standards when introduced in 2016, according to the company. That development work is already under way. “I’ve already driven the first Americanized medium-duty and there’s work to be done, but it showed its potential,” Daum said.
The new MD engine will be available in Freightliner models in 2016. As it did with the DT12 automated manual transmission, DTNA will initially manufacture the engines in Europe and then move production to North America by 2018. “We’re bullish on the North American market, so we’re going to invest in medium-duty, too,” Daum said. As it does with its heavy-duty engines, axles and transmissions, the company will continue to offer options from other suppliers, which in the case of both medium- and heavy-duty engines is Cummins. At present, Detroit engines account for 90% of the company’s heavy-truck orders, but “the customers will eventually tell us what our market share will be” with the new MD diesels, he said. —JIM MELE

T
he purpose of FMCSR 49 CFR §392.3, known as the ill or fatigued operator regulation, is to empower a trucker with the responsibility to make safety decisions on the road regarding his current physical status. Basically, the rule states that if a driver is ill or fatigued to a degree that it may cause him to be a danger to others on the road, he must not drive. If the driver is already on the road when he realizes this, he may continue to drive to the nearest safe place. It’s important for trucking company operations to understand that FMCSA gives a trucker this authority to assess a situation concerning his/her physical condition as to the safest course of action when it comes to feeling sick or fatigued. A dispatcher or load planner should educate a driver about these regulations, and reward, instead of penalize, them for not accepting a load if they are fatigued or ill. They should not tell the driver to “suck it up and just complete the run.” If so, then the company must accept any and all consequences resulting from the actions of that dispatcher or planner. These types of situations can quickly turn into tragic accidents that become multimillion-dollar lawsuits. Ignoring safety and pushing a trucker beyond their limits is a catastrophe waiting to happen. GM confident of pickup success
G
eneral Motors is touting the fuel economy and work capability efficiencies of its new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsized pickup trucks. “There are 12.5 million midsized pickups on the road in the U.S. today, representing about 5% of all vehicles on our roads,” said Kenn Bakowski, marketing manager for the GMC Canyon, at a special ride and drive event for journalists in Del Mar, CA. “This gives you the sense of the opportunity we believe is out there,” he continued. “And efficiency is the nature of the beast here in terms of fuel economy, maneuverability, parkability, payload and towing. That’s the whole formula: efficiency paired up with capability in a truck that is easy to live and work with.” GM noted that, according to EPA tests, the Canyon and Colorado will offer an estimated 20 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg in highway driving for a combined 22 mpg rat-

The EPA test vehicles were powered by a 2.5L I-4 4-cyl. engine in 2WD configuration and mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. By contrast, 4WD versions of the 2015 midsized models will sport EPA-estimated ratings of 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for a combined 21 mpg. Harnessing the sun
C
arrier Transicold has released a new accessory product that harnesses the sun’s power to charge transport refrigeration unit (TRU) batteries. Thin-film flexible solar panels are installed on the roofs of trailers, truck bodies and refrigerated rail cars to provide battery power to systems from all makers. When exposed to daylight, the panels continuously charge TRU batteries, ensuring power for system starts and helping to avoid issues and costs associated with a weak or dead battery, the company said. “Refrigerated fleet demands for value-added electrical loads have increased in recent years, tapping refrigeration system batteries to power additional electronics such as telematics devices, fuel-level sensors, interior trailer lighting, and other accessories,” said Jason Forman, marketing manager–truck trailer, Carrier Transicold Performance Parts Group. According to Carrier Transicold, power draws can range from milli-

The solar panels provide up to 1.8 amps per hour and are compatible with 12-volt wet cell and absorbent glass mat batteries. Amorphous silicon solar cell technology ensures the panels perform in low and indirect lighting conditions. The panels weigh less than 2 lbs. each and measure less than oneeighth of an inch thick. A standard panel measures about 26 x 41 in. and is intended for trailer and rail installations. www.transicold.carrier.com
irman Systems said a new manufacturing process that allows it to fabricate the AirWedge aerodynamic device directly to a trailer’s axles reduces its cost by $1,000. The company said testing on the AirWedge II shows that the mounting system maintains the mpg increases generated by the previous device. The AirWedge II is tucked in next to the rear axles and moves with the axles. Its compact design prevents damage from curbs, railroads or large elevation changes, the company said. “Our customers have asked for a higher return on investment and the new mounting system answers that need perfectly. The AirWedge II’s reduced weight puts 100 lbs. back in the trailer while lowering the price,” said Bob Henderson, president. www.airmansystems.com

o o d y e ar Ti re & Rubber announced what it claims is the “most fuelefficient long-haul drive tire in North America,” the Fuel Max LHD G505D. Brian Buckham, general manager of product marketing for Goodyear Commercial Tire Systems, said the tire maker can make that claim “because the Fuel Max LHD G505D’s rolling resistance is industry-leading for drive tires.” He noted that the company describes its fuelefficient tire as “not only SmartWay-verified, but a ‘super-SmartWay’ tire.” Andrea Russell, brand manager-commercial marketing, reported that in testing by Goodyear,
the tire showed up to a 15% reduction in rolling resistance and up to a 2% improvement in on-highway fuel efficiency versus directly competitive tires. The Fuel Max LHD G505D is available now and will replace the G305 AT LHD drive tire in the company’s lineup. Features of the tire include a highly siped center rib and lateral grooves for all-season traction; use of Goodyear’s Tredlock Technology, which contains interlocking microgrooves and a wide tread for long life and enhanced toughness; and a steel-belt casing package for toughness, endurance and robust retreadability. www.goodyear.com

Star technicians
O
Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of serving as a judge for the SuperTech competition at the fall meeting of the Technology & Maintenance Council. For those who are not familiar with the event, it is a gathering of the nation’s top diesel technicians who willingly subject themselves to rigorous testing over several days in a quest to be a Grand Champion. SuperTech is not for the faint of heart nor the Procedures are shade tree mechanic. The tire and wheel stain place for a tion is definitely the most physically demanding reason—safety because the competitors are required to install and remove a truck tire and wheel assembly. While that may seem to be a relatively simple task, there are numerous steps to the process and each one is given a point value. When you consider the fact that the difference between Grand Champion and runner-up can be determined by as few as 15-20 points, forgetting to do something as basic as inspecting the threads can be costly. I have judged at 9 of the 10 SuperTech competitions and I am in awe of the professionals who choose to push themselves to the limit. These technicians must have a thorough understanding of each aspect of heavy-duty truck maintenance and repair in order to even make it past the first day. While they will be considered by many to be the “best of the best,” I have noticed a disturbing trend over the past few years. It’s obvious that too many of them do not use a star pattern when tightening wheel fasteners. For the past couple of competitions, we’ve been using an electronic torque control system to record the number of fasteners that have been tightened. If a technician tries to snug or torque the same fastener more
than once, the system will catch it. In my opinion, there are way too many competitors who fail to receive points during these steps of the process. To ensure that the wheels are properly seated on the hub or drum, it is crucial to snug and torque the fasteners in a star pattern. It is also the key to making sure that the bolt tension and clamping force is evenly distributed around the bolt circle. There is no time to think at SuperTech, so the competitors who regularly used a star pattern to install wheels had no problems and received the points. But the ones who missed a fastener or tried to snug or torque the same one twice were obviously thinking about it. With the technology we had in place, it was easy for the judges to identify the technicians who did not practice it every day. The trucking industry has made great strides to improve the level of precision when installing wheels. Torque control has evolved from stopping the impact wrench before the stud snapped to the regular use of torque wrenches and other tools that deliver the correct amount of force when tightening a fastener. But the greatest technology on the planet is wasted when the person using it does not follow all of the industry guidelines. Wheel installation is like a recipe and torque is simply the setting on the oven. When all of the ingredients are in place with the correct temperature, success is almost guaranteed. But when something as simple as a star pattern is not used regularly, the consequences can be severe, so technicians must be constantly reminded of how important it is. And if they happen to compete in a future SuperTech, it will definitely score points with the judges. AT

Focus on equipment, training is making Celadon’s return to the flatbed business a smooth success
A
After a 13-year absence, Indianapolis-based Celadon Trucking Services went back into the flatbed business earlier this year. “Our return to this market segment signals our intent to become a truly full-service carrier for our customers,” says Paul Will, Celadon’s CEO and president. “Whatever their needs, we can now better handle all of our customers’ shipping and transportation requirements.” Rather than starting its own flatbed operation, Celadon chose to acquire an established company, purchasing Butler, IN-based Evans Equipment. At the time of the acquisition, the Evans fleet consisted of about 200 dry van trailers and 70 flatbed trailers operating from terminals and warehouses in four locations. “Evans Equipment is known for its high level of service in the industry,” Will states. “This acquisition offers solid potential to expand our dedicated and local footprint in the Midwest, and advance our overall growth plans through increased volumes within the flatbed business.” Celadon also sought the expertise that Evans has developed over the past 28 years by bringing Tim
Evans, vice president of operations, and Jim Evans, vice president of sales, into the company to manage flatbed operations. “One of our goals was to merge the flatbed operation into Celadon with as little disruption as possible for both companies and their customers,” says Jim Evans. “With the full support of the Celadon Group as it integrates the Evans operation into its enterprise, we’re leaving the Evans infrastructure intact while helping the company better understand the flatbed business.”
MAJOR INVESTMENTS Following the acquisition, Celadon has made investments to upgrade the flatbed fleet. New trailers for the operation include 100 53-ft. aluminum models from Benson, a subsidiary of Wabash National Corp., and Fontaine Trailer Co. “These trailers meet Celadon’s high standards for equipment and with sliding, spread tandems are flexible so we can expand our customer base,” Evans relates. “We want to be able to haul all types of freight in different lanes, including in western Canada and
14 American Trucker/December 2014

directly to Mexico. In the future, we plan to add extendable trailers, side kits and drop deck units as well.” Celadon is also looking to expand the workforce of owner-operators that handle flatbed hauls for the carrier while simultaneously upgrading the tractors they operate under a lease-purchase program. Newly ordered for the fleet are 2015 modelyear Kenworth W900, Peterbilt 579 and International LoneStar tractors. “Quality tractors and trailers coupled with an attractive lease-purchase program and percentage-based pay packages offer an outstanding opportunity for anyone considering a career as an owner-operator,” Evans states. “We believe in giving drivers the opportunity to become business owners by offering an appealing mix of equipment, and management and maintenance services. Taking ownership helps drivers support themselves and our customer base. That way, the value of our services goes up and so does profitability.” Evans goes on to explain that Celadon is equally focused on addressing issues specific to flatbed operations. “Qualified flatbed drivers need specific skills beyond those required for dry and refrigerated van drivers,” he says. “We provide initial and refresher training, especially for cargo securement and tarping. As we keep expanding, training is one way to ensure we are taking safety very seriously.” Celadon Group, through its subsidiaries, provides long haul, regional, local, dedicated, intermodal truckload dry, temperature-controlled, flatbed and expedited freight service across North America. Additionally, Celadon Logistics Services offers a range of brokerage and supply chain management solutions. AT

Trucking into2015 An interview with Steven Hausman, president of Triumph Business Capital
L
BY TIM BRADY, BUSINESS EDITOR
ast month we interviewed a rural community banker who presented his thoughts on the economy and small business for this past year and going forward into 2015. This month, we look at the trucking industry from the perspective of a financial expert. Not only does Steven Hausman, president of Triumph Business Capital, have expertise within the industry, he is a fourth-generation trucker who is
very familiar with the daily challenges faced by small and micro-carriers. Hausman’s great-grandfather started Hausman Trucking with two horses and a flatbed cart just four blocks from what’s now the World Trade Center in New York City. Like many children of trucking families, Hausman was surrounded by the industry. As a young boy, he’d play in trailers and freight cars while his father ran the business. When he was old enough

to begin working, he didn’t start out in the office. He got his hands dirty working as a truck driver, loading and unloading trailers, and maintaining and repairing the company’s equipment as a mechanic. Hausman has never been a stranger to physical labor and learned a lot about trucking from the school of hard knocks. While studying for his bachelor’s degree, he spent many hours working in various trucking operations. His first post-graduation

job was with a small food distributor. While pursuing his master’s degree, Hausman and a friend purchased a 1972 Peterbilt and delivered loads all over the country, earning the money to pay for their post-graduate educations. After receiving his MBA from the University of Michigan, Hausman pursued a career in the business and financial side of trucking. One of his first post-master’s degree jobs was with Volvo Trucks in corporate finance; he helped start their captive finance company. Hausman also worked at CitiCapital Commercial Corp. as a national sales manager. In 2004 Hausman and Tom Donohue Jr. put together what became known as Advance Business Capital. In 2012, that company joined with Triumph Bank to become part of Triumph Bancorp and is now known as Triumph Business Capital.
What’s your observation on the state of the economy in 2014 for small to micro-trucking companies? We need to consider that the U.S. economy has been pretty good for over a year now, particularly for the for-hire trucking industry. GDP and freight tonnage have both grown at annual rates around 4%. Unemployment just dropped below 6% in September, and the fed continues to constrain interest rates. But while the data is good, consumer and business confidence levels remain fragile. I think some of this is the natural result of unsettling current affairs, both domestic and abroad. A political environment where stalemate is highlighted over policy consensus has taken its toll, too. All in all, it’s an awfully choppy state, but freight demand has been very good. Anything different for those located in rural and small-town America? Not really. Many of our trucking clients reside in rural areas, but most operate on a nationwide basis.
Hausman says it’s the perfect time for small carriers to get their financial house in order, especially with the economy in growth mode. What were three difficult challenges small and micro-trucking businesses faced in 2014? Safety regulations, equipment availability (and pricing), and insurance. The used-equipment market has gotten substantially tighter. Insurance is the real wild card, with the FMCSA considering proposals to increase required coverage limits dramatically. The impact studies that I’ve seen, while still preliminary, suggest that doubling or tripling truck insurance limits may not just result in much higher premiums but rather the likely exit of a number of insurers that currently serve the small-trucking market. What’s your prognosis for 2015? I think we have another good year in store, plus or minus, but a retraction is almost inevitable. For the past 50 years, trucking has run through cycles of ups and downs about every six to eight years. For our business, we saw the bottom fall out in late 2008, and there’s no reason not to expect this pattern to continue. What’s interesting to me is that every down cycle seems to have its own unique set of causes, but the cycles run consistently, regardless of particulars. Oftentimes, the trigger is regulatory change—and there are plenty of those suspects for the next round.

In your opinion, what is the best strategy for small and micro-trucking company owners for 2015? Get your business house in order over the next 12 months. If you’re not making a reasonable return on your investment in a trucking market this good, there’s something wrong with your business model. Don’t put it off. If you have the wrong equipment or lanes, or need to rightsize your fleet, do it now while there are a lot more options for making these changes than there might be in another 18 months. Conversely, if you are doing well, don’t lose focus. Assuming this business stays cyclical, there are special opportunities in down markets for those operators who are well-positioned. What advice would you give small and micro-trucking business owners on working with a factor so they gain the most benefit? In spite of the worst efforts of several bad actors, there are some really good factors dedicated to the transportation space. The International Factoring Assn. has a code of ethics that most of us support, and that’s a good starting point. I can also tell you that in our business, Triumph Business Capital, we do a lot of work in providing services that many of our clients don’t even take advantage of—fuel programs, scanning, online credit portals. A factoring company can be a small trucker’s best friend or its worst nightmare. My recommendation to all factoring clients is to lean into the relationship and take advantage of everything that’s being offered. It’s just like any other relationship— you tend to get out of it exactly what you put in. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call 731-749-8567. ENGINE OILS:
Driven to change
With new formulations available, lubricant suppliers suggest reviewing your oil strategy BY DAVID CULLEN, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

cover story
Oil. It’s the lifeblood of an engine.
Nothing’s changed about that since the birth of the automotive age. But when it comes to heavy-duty diesel engines, right now a lot about oil is changing. What’s more, say major lubricant suppliers, the changes under way are all for the better. Driving the ongoing push to develop and bring to market new multi-grade oil formulations is the growing recognition that this liquid gold can pump value into trucking operations beyond delivering on its core mission of protecting expensive engines.
Indeed, the latest advances in lubricants for heavy-duty diesel engines promise to arm fleet owners with a potent weapon for further taking down operating costs. For the major oil formulators, the front line they had to push past was determined by staying on top of the various factors that shape their market. They discerned that the role played by heavy-duty engine oil is changing quickly. That meant working fast to ensure that customer satisfaction with their products would continue. Complicating matters, there are two key agents of change driving lubricant developments. What’s brought each of these into play is unique. But the impact of each can be absorbed by applying a single solution that results in engine oils formulated to directly address these emerging issues.
FUEL ECONOMY BOOST
The biggest agent of change is double-headed, but all green. Like never before, fleets are seeking engine oil that can help their engines run as fuel efficiently as possible to save them money. And the government is pushing for that to happen, too, albeit to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) via performance standards mandated for truck makers.
The first round of those GHG/ MPG rules, jointly promulgated by the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Administration, kicked in for modelyear 2014-2018 trucks. The second round of the regs, not issued yet, will be stricter and will first apply to 2019 model-year vehicles. Once the first GHG/MPG rules were announced, diesel engine makers and truck OEMs determined that they would need motor oil to contribute to the mandated GHG reductions and corresponding increases in MPG performance. That’s why engine makers petitioned back in 2011 for a new API oil-service category (known as Proposed Category 11, or PC-11 for short) to directly address fuel efficiency and be put in place by the time the initial GHG/MPG rules became effective. As things stand now, it looks like the work on PC-11 will conclude in time for newly formulated engine oils to hit the marketplace in early 2017. The other big change-driver negatively impacting oil performance is a shift in operational patterns being undertaken by many over-the-road fleets to increase equipment utilization. These fleets are running more tractors in double-duty; that is, the

same truck will run over the road at night and then make local deliveries in cities and towns during the day. According to oil suppliers, the duty cycle of these dual-use trucks is more severe than when such a truck operates only on the highway. That’s because when they’re peddling freight locally, their engines are shut down more often, either manually or via automatic shutdown systems aimed at curbing idling. The upshot is “oil is getting heated up more and more often,” explains Jim Gambill, North America Commercial and Industrial brands manager at Chevron Products. “Over time, every increase in average temperature of 20 deg. can cut the oil’s lifespan by 50%. Pushing up average oil temperature over time does affect the job the oil must perform.
CHANGING CYCLES
“With a Class 8 tractor, it used to be that the driver would turn on the engine on Monday and not turn it off again until Friday,” he continues. “Now the same truck is getting turned on and off and ‘cold-killed’ so much when operating locally that oil longevity is being impacted. In addition, these trucks are now engaged in more stop-and-go traffic and that cuts their fuel efficiency.” “Fleet owners have always searched for any opportunity to save costs without risking long-term damage to their primary assets,” says John Cummins, vice president of product technology at Hydrotex and dean of its Lubrication University. “In recent years,” he continues, “changes due to EPA regulations and the switch by fleets from single modes of operation to mixed local duties is putting even greater pressure on engine oil being used.” The good news is that “many fleet owners have discovered that new formulations of heavy-duty engine

cover story oil with lower-viscosity ranges not only protect their vehicles, but provide increased fuel economy savings as well,” says Cummins. He stresses that “it’s become essential to use an oil that can properly lubricate fleet engines across a broad range of conditions. Engine oils now have to perform over a wide range of operating conditions and temperatures from cold-weather starting to heavy loads in high temperature situations.” “Today, fleet owners have to balance multiple concerns,” says Lilo Hurtado, application engineer with ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants. “They want to maximize the performance of their vehicles, enhance fuel economy potential, and show their [business] partners that they embrace sustainable business practices. “Through our commitment to research and close working relationships with leading engine manufacturers and truck builders,” he continues, “we strive to be at the forefront of lubricant technology—even as various challenging requirements come up, like the development of PC-11.” Given all those lubricant requirements that must be met, Hurtado remarks that ExxonMobil is “certainly seeing greater industry interest in low-viscosity synthetic engine
Experts advise weighing the added cost of lower-viscosity oil against its mpg gain. oils that can offer many benefits that trucking fleets want.” Dan Arcy, global OEM technical manager at Shell Global Solutions, says fleets of late are expressing “much greater interest in fuel economy, but they also remain interested in optimizing drain intervals. There’s a big question these customers have: Can they go to a lower-viscosity oil to reduce fuel consumption without sacrificing any of the engine protection they’re accustomed to?”
WEIGHING COSTS With the caveat that drains may be set by fleets per varying criteria, Arcy says the answer to that question by and large is to move to a semi-syn-

thetic oil formulated to increase fuel efficiency yet retain required protection and durability performance. “The fuel-economy performance of any oil will vary due to various factors,” he points out, “such as onhighway vs. stop-and-go miles and the weight of loads hauled.” Arcy notes that fleets “often look at the added cost of a lower-viscosity oil, but they should also consider how that will be offset by the fueleconomy gains it delivers as well as the equivalent wear performance it provides compared to a less expensive 15W-40 product. Len Badal, global Delo brand manager at Chevron, points out that “growth in market acceptance of lower-viscosity oils is also being driven by large fleets that see moving to a 10W-30 product as an easy change to gain up to a 1% improvement in fuel-economy performance. “At the end of the day,” he continues, “there isn’t a huge price difference between purchasing 15W-40 and 10W-30, especially since fleets see the fuel economy savings they’ll realize as going straight to their bottom line.” Badal points out that since the 2010 model year, “most engines have been designed to run on lowerviscosity oils—10W-30 in particular. Yet there are still a lot of older trucks

For example, our premier-quality HyFilm LEO 5W-40, a CJ-4/SN engine oil, has been tested and shown to have better wear protection than an API CJ-4 standard oil. Arcy says the 10W-30 oil was formulated to have “the extra protection necessary to make it more than capable to handle extended drain intervals; however,” he cautions, “each fleet must consider all the specifics of their operation before extending drains with any oil.”
INTERIM STEP
ExxonMobil’s Badal relates that along with its semi-synthetic Delo 400 10W-30, the company offers the 15W-30 Delo 400 SD oil. “Our 15W30 is aimed at start-and-stop applications that frequently turn engines off as well as those that shut down often to reduce idling,” he explains. He says such frequent key-offs “cause the turbo to wind down and the heat left over soaks into the oil and that can drive up oxidation. This oil has improved oxidation performance. And it has lower viscosity than 15W-40, but switching to it is not as big a change as moving right to a 10W-30. So, it can be adopted as an interim step by fleets as well.” According to Citgo’s Betner, the company’s Citgard 700 syntheticblend 10W-30 has been shown to attain a 3% gain in fuel efficiency “at some fleets” vs. using 10W-30 oil and without incurring any drop-off in wear protection. “We also offer the full-synthetic SynDurance 5W-30 oil,” he advises. “We have data on this product that shows it will produce an even higher fuel efficiency improvement than will 10W-30 compared to running 15W-40. And in million-mile field testing we’re conducting of this 5W-30 vs. premium 15W-40 oil, we’re seeing no trade-off in wear protection or oil consumption.” “We’ve been working closely with major commercial vehicle manufacturers and engine builders on this issue for many years, conducting extensive laboratory testing and field trials,” says ExxonMobil’s Hurtado. He advises that the first engine oils
New API categories in 2017 should clarify oil choice for many truckers. meeting the final requirements to satisfy the PC-11 specs will be licensed starting on March 1, 2017. As for Hydrotex’s outlook on PC11, Cummins says the lubricant formulator is “following developments very closely, but we don’t expect to see the new API specifications in play before 2017. We will have product formulations ready whenever they are required.” Shell’s Arcy, who heads up API’s New Category Evaluation Team for PC-11, says the development of the two new oil-service categories that will result from defining PC-11 remains on track for “first licensing of oils meeting the new criteria during the first quarter of 2017.” “We won’t see PC-11 completed before mid-year 2017 if not a little later,” forecasts Citgo’s Betner. “We do know that the category will be split into two API service categories. These are currently referred to as Part A and Part B.” ExxonMobil’s Badal describes what he terms the PC-11A category as one that “will be backward-compatible to cover any existing engines while providing better protection, including improved wear and oxidation performance, than oil meeting the CJ-4 requirements.” As for what he refers to as the PC11B category, Badal says it’s “being developed specifically for increasing
Go to AmericanTrucker.com for used equipment listings
the fuel efficiency of engines beginning with the 2017 model year. Typically, this category won’t be regarded as backward-compatible.”
MARKET DEMAND
According to Shell’s Arcy, PC-11A products may be 10W-30 oil that’s formulated at the high end of 30 grade as well as 15W-40 and 5W-40 formulations. “As for PC-11B products,” he continues, “these will be directed at improving engine fuel efficiency. These will be 10W-30 and 5W-30 oils formulated at the lower end of 30 grade. Just like PC-11A oils, these will have to pass all the CJ-4 criteria tests.” Certainly, no fleet is waiting for either of those new service categories to arrive to move to lower-viscosity oil. Rather, it seems natural market momentum is moving the switchover along at a decent pace all by itself. Arcy says “it’s worth noting that all OEMs now either factory-fill with 10W-30 oil or offer that as an option. That alone is a big change in the market from 10 years ago.” “We’re seeing greater acceptance of lower-viscosity oil by fleets,” says Citgo’s Betner. “But with 83% of fleets still using 15W-40, we feel there are still a lot of questions out there about making the switch that oil suppliers must answer for their customers.” AT

First and foremost, Kirk says, is to regularly check all the filters, i.e., fuel, oil and even air, on a commercial vehicle when significant drops in temperatures can be experienced, typically from November through April. Next, ensure that truck batteries and related charging system components are in good working order. “Maintaining enough cranking power is critical to getting trucks up and running when the temperature dips,” Kirk stresses. “We instruct drivers in our northern operations to plug in their block heaters every night in the winter.” That’s especially critical for 2004 model and later trucks, he added, ones equipped with exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control systems. “It’s been normal for years to idle engines for long periods in winter,” Kirk says. “But high idling can be damaging to post-2004 vehicles. For starters, that creates a lot more soot. Then there are many areas where laws restrict engine idling. That’s why we tell all of our drivers to plug in overnight and let the block heater do its job.”

conditions got overtaxed,” he notes. “And it’s one thing for a driver to sit on the side of a road in 50 deg. weather. It’s something else when it’s minus 5 deg.” Equipment operating in Canada and northern U.S. locations is routinely prepped to handle the cold, Kirk adds, but the last winter cycle pushed Arctic temperatures well south. “Many zones that are not normally affected by such weather got hit with sub-zero cold,” he points out. “So we decided that it’s in everyone’s best interest to put out what we’ve learned from our winter experience.” Fuel treatment is another critical area of winter maintenance—even for fleets that don’t expect to operate in northern climes all that much. “Making sure that fuel has been blended correctly for the seasonal temperature and that a cloud point additive is included prevents fuel filter waxing that causes breakdowns,” Kirk says. Fleets should fill up on winter-blended fuel at least once per week or use cold-weather fuel treatment additives when traveling to colder climates even if doing so only occasionally, he explains. Kirk cautions that even small amounts of water in either diesel fuel or diesel exhaust fluid used in the SCR system will freeze. “Even a little water accumulating in the tanks for those respective fluids can freeze in winter; and a typical engine warmup may not thaw it,” he warns. “That can lead to diesel injector jams that can shut down a truck.” Tires are another item that can undergo changes due to the weather. “Thermal differences affect tire pressure—decreasing them in the cold, increasing them in the heat,” Kirk points out. How do you ensure good mileage from tires?
What make and model(s) of trucks/trailers do you use?
We keep the tires in alignment, check air pressure, and use Centramatic [wheel] balancers.
We have a 2007 International 9900ix and a 2003 Peterbilt 378. We pull stainless steel tankers—307 and 407 tankers are the most common—and now we’re getting into acid trailers.
Do you have regularly scheduled routes or on-demand delivery? We started with on-demand customers and have been transitioning to regular routes for dedicated customers.
Do you stock any parts for your trucks or purchase as needed? Which ones?

We mainly buy as needed to keep overhead down. But we keep the vital, everyday items.
What are your specifications for your trucks?
We prefer pre-emissions or EGR valve only [engines]; 13-18 speed transmissions with 3.55-3.90 gear ratio, minimum; and 500 hp. engines, preferably Cummins but Caterpillar is a close second.
In business since March of 2013, Graham Transport hauls liquid hazardous materials in bulk tank trailers.
Is maintenance handled in your own shop or jobbed out? I’ve made relationships with a handful of shops that take care of our maintenance needs. [For major repairs], I use a select few companies I’ve worked with in the past.
What are three challenges you face with your maintenance program? How do you resolve each? We [try to] keep expensive repairs to a minimum [by monitoring] tire life and scheduling routine maintenance. We use spreadsheets to keep track of dates, mileage, and how often repairs have been done and when they’re due. We are always checking tires/alignments whenever we’re changing tires—or every 50,000 mi.— and rotate tires. We try to get trucks in the shop by Thursday morning to give maintenance vendors more than enough time to do required jobs.
How do you determine when it’s time to replace a truck/trailer? To be honest, I’m not there yet. But I’d say when it ‘nickel and dimes’ you; however, I prefer the older equipment.
What programs do you have in place to ensure CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) compliance for your trucks/trailers? The equipment gets inspected every 90 days and any time a grease or oil job gets done.
What do you enjoy most about trucking and hauling the type of freight you do? I enjoy being able to be a successful businessman and a father to my children.
What does your company do best? How do you handle maintenance on your trucks/trailers to minimize downtime? What are your mileage/time intervals on preventive maintenance?
We provide a service to our customers, and you can always count on us when there’s a pressure-type situation.
We try to grease every 7,000 mi., and oil and grease every 12,000 to 15,000 mi. We pull an oil sample every oil change. Also, we’ve set up intervals for tires, coolant, filters, radiator flushes, transmission and rear-end flushes, and so forth, which are done based on mileage and times.

hile some things about wheels for heavyduty trucks haven’t changed, manufacturers continue working on innovations that enhance durability and help fleets improve cost efficiency. “A range of research and development efforts aimed at advancing product technology continues,” says Craig Kessler, vice president of engineering at Accuride. “We continue to reinvent the wheel,” states Tim Myers, president of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. “A mix of manufacturing, technology and metals expertise enables breakthroughs and a progression of innovations driven by proprietary technologies.” A diligent effort to drive continuous improvement in both product and process is also in place at Maxion Wheels, notes Mark Fonte, marketing & sales manager–OE Truck. “We are committed to innovation and will soon implement a formal process that draws on the knowledge of our employee base. Through a virtual suggestion box available on a web-based platform, employees can submit concepts that can shape the design of the wheels of the future.” Coatings for steel wheel corrosion protection and weight savings for both steel and aluminum wheels are among the latest wheel developments at Accuride. “Wheel ‘lightweighting’ is a consistent area of focus and a core process for our engineering team,” Kessler says. “Not only is it needed by our fleet customers to maximize load rates and minimize fuel expenses, it also helps reduce manufacturing costs.” Accuride steel wheels for commercial vehicle applications include the 22.5x8.25-in. Accu-Lite featuring highstrength, low-alloy steel in models weighing 68 and 66 lbs. For aluminum wheels, Accuride introduced its Duplex line earlier this year. “By improving manufacturing processes and wheel designs, we can still take additional weight out of an aluminum wheel,” Kessler adds. “More significant weight reduction, however, will come through the use of new alloys.” Earlier this year, Alcoa rolled out the Ultra One Wheel with MagnaForce, a new proprietary alloy the company says is on average 17% stronger than the stan-

Maxion’s engineering team has been working on improvements in steel wheel technology for North American commercial vehicles, including new coatings to limit corrosion and improve appearance, technologies to reduce weight, and ideas for improved wheel runout that will enhance ride comfort. Its global product line now includes the Gen35 wheel family, which the company says is 6% lighter than its former wheel generation, the result of newly applied design techniques. “We are also developing a torque sensor system as a safety feature to monitor torque loss between the nut and stud,” Fonte explains. “This new technology combines a miniature sensor with a wireless transmitter and can be installed on basically every vehicle nut or washer. The sensor permanently monitors the torque level and as soon as a minor loss is registered, the system can alert the driver as well as inform the fleet maintenance department, including through text messages on mobile phones.” The truck wheel manufacturing industry’s efforts to focus on product design and manufacturing process improvements, including the development and use of new technologies and materials, are leading to advantages for fleets. Included are reduced wheel weights, which can offset heavier components on late model vehicles or boost payload capacity. Running lighter also lowers fuel consumption. The 2014 Grand Champion Jerome Lobo Springfield, MO
J
erome Lobo will tell you that he never planned on making a living as a truck driver, nor did he expect trucking to offer up a way for him to publicly display his passion for medieval history. Yet it’s that riveting passion that caught the attention of American Trucker’s judging panel. Frankly, who wouldn’t stop and stare at castles, dragons, and a knight decked in full armor (sword, shield and all) emblazoned on a 2012 Freightliner Cascadia tractor? “I’ve been into medieval history for a long time,” Lobo explains. “I’ve always been fascinated with it.” Lobo went so far as to dabble in Internet-based
role-playing games involving medieval knights until he suddenly faced an unexpected career change. A U.S. Army veteran, Lobo worked for GTE in California for almost 20 years when in 1999 the company began

the process of laying off personnel. It was at that time that he began his new career, i.e., driving a truck—first for CRST and then for Prime Inc. “I met a driver

for Prime who had decorated his tractor with murals of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall,” Lobo says. “‘They let you do that with your truck?’ I asked, and he said ‘Yes.’ That inspired me to bring my creations to life.”

So in June 2000, with his wife and daughter in tow, he relocated to Springfield, MO—Prime’s home base—and officially settled into a long-haul career on Aug. 2 of that year. At the same time, he was eyeing ways to bring some of his medieval visions to life. As a leased owner-operator for Prime, Lobo is able to transfer various visual incarnations of castles, dragons and knights to his trucks, but the boldest creation yet is represented on “The Black Knight,” the name of his 2012 Cascadia. Lobo’s alter-ego Sir Shane De LaMar is prominently displayed on the engine

hood. Painted by artist Karl Nordman, Sir Shane is accompanied by a black wolf as a salute to his Native American heritage. “The image of the noble knight stands for a lot of things to me: honor, integrity, courage, and respect,” Lobo says. “It’s also an image that I believe many truck drivers like me try to live up to. That’s why truck drivers used to be called ‘knights of the road’ in the past.” After three years and 648,000 mi. of trucking, Lobo sold “The Black Knight” in August of this year; however, he’s transferring the name to his new tractor, which should be ready before the year draws to a close. Images on the new truck will include a fire-breathing dragon, King Arthur and four knights of the Round Table, as well as a picture of Camelot, King Arthur’s castle. “I don’t put all of this art on my trucks to enter competitions and win prizes; I do it partly for me and partly for everyone out there on the road,” Lobo explains. “The kids in particular love to see trucks all decorated like this. And I especially love driving trucks that look like this.” AT

Frequent engine on and offs. Now there’s an oil for it. Under today’s trucking conditions, piston temperatures are hitting new highs that can lead to oxidation and viscosity increase that compromises an oil’s ability to protect your engine. You can now protect your engine against Severe Duty conditions with Delo 400 SD SAE 15W-30. It’s a new kind of oil engineered, using patent pending technology, to protect engines under Severe Duty conditions. To know more about Severe Duty visit thisissevereduty.com
