This is the first of what I hope will become an annual tradition at Americ —celebrating the world of custom trucks. This month, in our “Custom Craze” feature, you’ll see a whole slew of rigs decked out in a variety of styles wide enough to appeal, I think, to just about anyone who operates trucks for a living. Drop me an email if you like or dislike the photos we selected to illustrate this story, or send us a photo of your rig and tell us why you think it’s a cut above the rest. Style can be a profit- One thing I would like to mention, maker for truckers. however, before we start admiring all the chrome, lights and paint schemes, is that while tricking out trucks this way is very expensive and done largely to win show truck competitions (along with some serious bragging rights), there can be lots of business benefits, too. Trucker Jerry Kissinger (who you’ll meet inside) stressed to me that his top customer, cheesemaker Schreiber Foods, calls him and his one-of-akind ’91 Mack in for special projects—one where only a uniquely styled custom truck will do. “Maybe they are shipping some new samples somewhere, or serving a new customer,” he told me. “They’ll call me to handle that load, knowing that my rig will make a big impression when I pull up to the dock.” Not just a “big” impression, mind you, but a good one—one that reflects well on the shipper and their products, giving them a much-needed advantage in the marketplace. It’s worth keeping that potential business advantage in mind—both for truckers and their customers—as you thumb through the custom truck creations in this issue. AT

Brake shoes gain PlatinumShield rvinMeritor is offering remanufactured brake shoes with PlatinumShield coating and a 3-yr./300,000-mi. warranty against rust-jacking. The coating is designed to resist micro-abrasion caused by the movement of the brake lining against the shoe table during normal use. Rust-jacking occurs when rust forms on bare shoe metal under the lining, causing the lining to lift and crack. The aftermarket shoes are standard on all Meritor remanufactured production shoes with MA and R prefixes, and Meritor MG1, MG2L, MG2, CG and MET OEM aftermarket shoes. It will also be included on Fras-Le F550, F555, F577, F560, F587, F787T and Combo shoes. “While rust-jacking has been a recurring industry issue, it’s a fact that the increased use of harsh liquid chemicals in winter road solvents can accelerate the formation of rust on shoe metal where the paint has been worn away,” said Doug Wolma,

New site details tire pressure systems C

ustomers of Doran Manufacturing’s 360HD and 360SL tire pressure monitoring systems can use its easy-to-use web site with at-a-glance status updates to make understanding and using the systems even easier. The site includes a patent-pending “Green Means Good” indicator. Monitoring the economic payback for the system is also included. “The new site is very easy to use so that truckers and fleet managers can quickly find what they are looking for,” said Jim Samocki, Doran gm. “With intuitive layout and navigation—and easily accessible

pathways to frequently asked questions, accessories, advantages and an online store—our goal is to provide information quickly. Because the only things worse than a flat tire or blowout is wasting time trying to find an online solution.” The 360HD and 360SL can monitor up to 36 tires at once and use wireless tire pressure sensors to transmit a signal to an in-cab monitor. Alarms within the cab alert the driver to possible problems. Installation takes about an hour per truck per trailer. www.doranmfg.com

No-idle APU combo pack ack A

new concept for auxiliary power units (APUs) is heading to the commercial truck market: a hybrid APU that connects a battery-based, no-idle system to a small diesel generator so the batteries can remain fully charged. Bergstrom Inc. and generator maker Kohler have joined forces to make the hybrid APU a reality. Bill Gordon, Bergstrom director of global marketing, said the company’s NITE system is being linked to a 4.7-hp. Kohler

generator to bring what he calls “the best of both worlds” to the APU market. Gordon said the Kohler generator weighs 110 lbs. and is the “size of a suitcase” for easy packaging on a commercial truck alongside Bergstrom’s 480-lb. NITE system. “A full-sized diesel APU typically lasts 1,500 to 2,000 hrs. if it is running all the time,” Gordon said, adding that the hybrid aspect of this package increases the lifecycle of the APU. www.bergstromauto.com; www. kohler.com

A first for LED headlamps T

ruck-Lite introduced its newest 12V product, declaring it the world’s first 7-in. round, DOT-compliant LED headlamp for commercial applications. According to John Howells, vp-sales for The Americas, forward lighting by a 12V LED headlamp results in brighter, crisper and whiter light output than incandescent alternatives as well as the longer life and greater dependability that has become expected of LED signaling and marking products. Howells said the headlamp features solid-state circuit board assemblies for unrivaled shock and vibration resistance and hard-coated polycarbonate lenses that offer 30 times more impact strength than glass. The lamps have undergone extreme weather testing at military

10 American Trucker/ r/May y 2009

installations in Panama, Arizona and Alaska with exceptional results, noted Howells. He said they meet or exceed all applicable DOT requirements pertaining to headlights, which he said are one of the most difficult standards to achieve. Designed to replace any standard 7-in. round headlight within 12V applications, the lamps can be aimed using standard mechanical aiming equipment. Made in the U.S., each headlamp uses ten highoutput LEDs as its light source, with a light output brighter than traditional glass beam headlights, which results in better visibility. While a typical headlamp may be rated to last as little as 1,200 hours, Truck-Lite LED headlamps are expected to exceed that by as much as 50 times, said Howells. www.truck-lite.com

Lighting the flexible way A new solid-state light technology from Grote Industries is thinner than a penny and is mounted on self-adhesive flexible strips that can be bent, twisted and even cut to size. Called LightForm, the proprietary technology will see its first commercial application as a P2 marker lamp before the end of the year, according to Dominic Grote, vp-sales and marketing. Grote introduced the industry’s first LED marker lamp at the MidAmerica Trucking Show 20 years ago. LightForm is the “most radically innovative lighting product to come along” since that introduction, he said. Using 98% less material than a standard LED marker light and measuring only 71-mm thick, the marker is being called “a light stamp” because of its extremely light weight and profile, and because it can be af-

fixed with peel-and-stick tape. Cost “will be competitive with standard LEDs,” according to Grote. The marker application is just the first for the technology that Grote said “will change the shape, design and application of interior and exterior vehicle lighting in ways we haven’t even begun to imagine.” According to the company, LightForm can produce red, amber, green and blue light; a white-light version is under development. www.grote.com

CARB gives OK to ClearSky C

arrier Transicold’s ClearSky diesel particulate fi lter has been verified by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for use with the ComfortPro auxiliary power unit. The verification allows Class 8 tractors with 2007 or newer engines to use the system within the state. The ClearSky filter uses activere generation technology to reduce particulate emissions to meet CARB’s standard for DPFs, which is an 85% reduction. It also meets CARB’s NOx emissions regulations. “Active regeneration technology presents unique advantages,” said Eduardo Andrade, Carrier Transicold director of business develop-

ment. “A challenge for most APU makers is that the units typically don’t generate enough heat to burn off particulates from the exhaust. However, ComfortPro’s APU D e lt e k hy br i d dies el-elec t r ic technolog y is unique, and its powerful generator creates the necessary temperatures.” With a silicon carbide filter element and an easy-to-maintain design, the ClearSky DPF replaces the ComfortPro muffler on new equipment and can be installed on existing units (Model PC6000). It does not require driver intervention and automatically regenerates in less than 25 min., every 10 to 30 operating hours. www.trucktrailer.carrier.com

Filter change Switch to microGreen filter extends oil change intervals It’s an issue facing many fleets—how to be more “green” while cutting operating costs at the same time. Solving that ticklish dilemma is even more problematic for fleets serving industries with a decidedly less than positive green image, such as the home heating oil business. “As a company that works in the oil industry, we have a strong commitment to preserving the environment,” says David Cohen, executive vp of Standard Oil of Connecticut. “The challenge we face is how to change things to benefit not only the environ-

PROBLEM

ment, but our own bottom line as well.” Standard Oil operates a fleet of 50 heavy- and medium-duty trucks along with 60 light-duty cargo vans, with the vans on a short engine oil change interval of just 3,000 mi. Conventional motor oil filters can only filter out particles down to 25 to 40 microns in size, but the problem is that most of the particles that cause engine wear are between 3 to 10 microns in size so they are not filtered. Therefore, after only 3,000 to 5,000 mi., most engine oil becomes contaminated with these small particles and must be changed.

To get better engine oil filtration, Standard Oil tested and then adopted the microGreen filter developed by Valhalla, NY-based SOMS Technologies. Introduced in October 2008, the microGreen filter combines a conventional filter with a second micro-filter to capture particles down to 2 microns, so the oil is kept exceptionally clean and can last much longer. Standard Oil initially tested the filter on several of its GMC 2500 gasoline-engine powered service vans and received oil analysis reports from an independent laboratory to monitor the filter’s effectiveness. The results showed it could extend oil drains safely out to 30,000 mi. due to the removal of those small particles.

“Even in the severe stop-and-go environment we work in, the oil sampling we conducted showed the oil continued to get better even as it got older in terms of protecting the engine,” Cohen explains. “[The filter] offers us a nice combination benefit. First, it reduces the amount of engine oil we consume, which helps the environment. Second, it’s a nice savings for us too in terms of reducing the oil and labor needed for oil changes. It’s up in the $10,000-a-year range in terms of savings. “The filter lowers our costs significantly, is better for our vehicles, and is much kinder to the environment,” he says. “It’s a winner from every point of view.”

ITI’s Pro-TREAD training uses a “mastery-based” approach (first developed for military use in advanced pilot training), which requires students to demonstrate an understanding of each point in a lesson before advancing to the next, providing fleets with a level of verification and accountability for their training efforts. “You are a lot better off in court if you can prove a driver satisfactorily completed a specific training lesson,” Voorhees noted. “The Qualcomm/Pro-TREAD collaboration allows a company’s drivers to receive safety training in a timely manner, which could help to prevent accidents before they happen and decrease the company’s liability,” said Ellis. “By collaborating with industry leader ITI to include their solution on the MCP200, we can now offer our customers a more efficient training solution.” Pro-TREAD will be available on the MCP200 when the platform is released in the summer. —WENDY LEAVITT

trailer tracking option with no monthly fees from PeopleNet identifies a trailer and provides location information when hooked to a tractor equipped with the company’s g3 onboard communications system. The tethered system uses an RFID device on the trailer to wirelessly transmit trailer ID, location, hook and drop times, and other alerts to a new Wi-VAN Gateway device in the tractor. Trailer data is relayed over the g3 system to PeopleNet’s operating center, where it can be accessed by fleets over the Internet in report form or retrieved for data integration with back-office systems. Initial reports include status, location, movement and history, but the company said future plans call for extending the trailer tracking system’s capabilities to include information on tire pressures, refrigeration unit operations and other data. Untethered systems can provide realtime trailer status and location information without being hooked to a tractor.

PeopleNet has introduced a trailer tracking option with no monthly fees. While the new system requires a tractor hookup to access that data, the company said it is “more cost-effective than untethered wireless systems since there is no recurring monthly fee and significantly lower hardware costs.” PeopleNet also announced the launch of BluLink, a technology that makes it easier and faster to develop custom software applications to run on PeopleNet’s Blu in-cab PC. www.peoplenetonline.com

ljex Software has introduced Image Link, a document management enhancement that is said to speed and simplify the billing process. The system allows customers to automatically email or fax invoices and proof of delivery and supporting documents. Image Link combines the document images needed to support an invoice into a single file. Document images can include proof-of-delivery signatures, bills of lading, load manifests, weight tickets, or other documents scanned and saved in any major image format. Image Link then converts invoices and multiple image formats into a single pdf file. www.aljex.com

d in the tire business back in 1982, the type bias truck tires to tubeless radial ull swing. We still did a lot of “split rim” business back in the day, but most fleets faced the inevitable and within a few years, tubeless radial truck tires and retreads represented the bulk of the business. Fleets didn’t have a lot of choices back then. All of the major truck tire manuThere are many facturers had steer, drive trailer tires that companies that and would consistently dethousands of origiwill help any size liver nal tread miles and then fleet test tires. live another life or two as a retread (where there were equally few options). There were also a number of unknown brands that teased with a great price and a nicelooking tread only to leave the fleet standing at the scrap pile staring at virgin casings with a broken heart, again. It reached the point where some of our customers wouldn’t even consider an “off-brand” tire because they didn’t want to take a chance at losing the casings. In some ways times have changed, and in some ways they haven’t. The Big Three, a.k.a. Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin, are still the Big Three, but now all of them have a cradle-to-grave new tire and retread program. For the large fleets with North American operations, bargaining power has never been higher as the major tire companies adjust production to meet reduced demand. Don’t be fooled, however, into thinking they will keep filling warehouses and eventually be forced to dump inventory at discounts, because they are already taking steps to manage supply through layoffs, plant closures and production shifts to keep prices stable. Major competitors to the Big Three have also come a

long way when it comes to durability and retreadability. Previously thought of “off-brands” have steadily built a reputation for quality truck tires and casings over the years, while others are a hit with some tires and a miss with others. And even with the consolidation of the retread industry, fleets still have the option of using independent retread suppliers that are not tied to a tire manufacturer. All of these factors add up to a point in time when fleets of any size have more buying power than ever given the current state of the industry. I’ve said many times that a fleet that does not constantly test different tires and retreads is making a huge mistake. When a tenth-of-a-mile-per-gallon improvement results in thousands or millions of dollars in fuel savings, every fuel-efficient compound on the market should be tested if the fleet is focused on fuel economy. If the primary goals are miles per 32nd or tire cost per mile, then there are a lot of long-wearing, deep-tread tires and retreads just waiting for a spot on some test vehicles. Unlike the old days where only the largest fleets had the luxury of running a tire test, there are a lot of reputable tire and retread companies that will gladly supply the manpower to measure and track the test tires for just about any size company. If tire and retread testing is something new, then there will be some growing pains since drivers and maintenance personnel will have to be more flexible to ensure the test vehicles are available from time to time so the data can be recorded. But the payoff is either the reassurance that current suppliers are providing the best value or the possibility that a different supplier may be able to offer additional value. The fleet that never tests will never know. AT

lot of folks might l o o k at Je r r y Kissinger standing next to his superbly dressed 1991 Mack tractor and think he’s just a show truck guy, out looking for prize money and maybe a trophy or two—or four. are small fleet owners operating from three to 15 trucks— sometimes 80 to 100 trucks—looking to create a symbol of their success, something to get people’s attention. “Building trucks like these is a niche market, but it’s growing incredibly,” he says. “For example, our sales of accessories, chrome fenders, etc., are off by a third this year due to the economy, but custom truck building is going strong. Our custom truck shop is very busy.” Martin at 4 States Truck echoes that sentiment: “Our business has remained very steady here. We’ve been very fortunate considering what’s been going on in the economy and in the trucking world.”

In the end, though, Kissinger says the custom truck craze is all about getting truck drivers to respect themselves and their profession—and to make their customers see that as well. “Listen, if you pull up late to a dock in a ratty truck leaking oil with a three-day stink on, things are going to go downhill fast,” he explained. “If you call ahead to tell them you’re running late and pull up in good equipment with a professional demeanor, then a lot more is possible.” AT

time to produce positive cash flow is about six weeks, which means there must be enough funds available to cover the fixed costs of the equipment (payments, insurance, licensing, etc.) during that time. In the example, let’s assume the fixed cost per unit is $4,400, dispatcher’s wages and employment taxes for the six weeks come to $3,500, and the two driver’s wages and employment taxes add up to $10,500 (or 5,250 each) for a total of $18,400. This is the minimum investment required just to run the trucks— the break-even point. With these figures added to our capitalization point, we can now calculate how much revenue is needed to grow the company over the next three years. Using the numbers above (capitalization point, $300,000; down payment on new equipment, $60,000; new personnel hiring and training, $9,000; and the revenue needed to reach the break-even point, $18,400), a total capital figure of $378,400 is determined. This is the revenue needed in the next three years. In the example, this company wants to grow by two tractor-trailer units in three years. To make this possible, the company will need to integrate its capital requirements of $378,400 into its hauling rates over the next three years.

ulti-brand commercial anufacturer, Ingersoll nty on its plate without having to be fleet experts as well. That’s why the company chooses to place the management of its 7,000-plus vehicle sales and service fleet into the very capable hands of Wheels Inc. Ingersoll Rand, with corporate offices in Davidson, NC, and Piscataway, NJ, has had a working relationship with Wheels Inc. for 42 years. Jessica Messer, team leader-financial services/fleet for Ingersoll Rand’s U.S. and Canadian operations, says Wheels has been working with Ingersoll Rand to help streamline the operations and efficiencies of the nearly 3,000 service trucks used in the company’s various business sectors. “We want fleet vehicles that will provide us with the lowest cost of operation possible,” she states. “At the same time, we want to make certain each truck is suitable for the task to which it is assigned and is upfitted with all the necessary equipment that will enable drivers/service technicians to do their jobs well.” Ingersoll Rand manufactures products under the brand names of Hussmann (stationary refrigeration equipment for grocery stores, restaurants, etc.); Thermo King (mobile refrigeration units); Ingersoll Rand In-

dustrial Technologies (shop air tools, air compressors, etc.); Schlage (locks and other security devices); Club Car (golf carts); and Trane (heating and air conditioning systems). As diverse as the company’s products are, so is its service truck fleet. Pickup trucks include Ford F150, F250SD and F350SD models, as well as some Dodge Ram 1500 and 2500 units. There are also a large number of vans in the fleet, mostly Ford E250s and E350SDs and some Dodge Grand Caravans, along with a handful of medium-duty trucks, primarily International 4000 and 1600 units. The majority of trucks are leased through Wheels Inc., although some remain on legacy leases from other vendors as a result of acquisitions by Ingersoll Rand. The company’s latest acquisition, for example, was the Trane climate control business. A year and a half ago, Ingersoll Rand began a new initiative focused on making structural changes to the fleet for improved productivity. “We’re going sector by sector, holding what’s known as kaizen events, where we get together a team to study specific problems and find the best solutions for them,” says Messer. “For example, we started with our Hussmann sector [which includes over 1,000 vehicles], asking ourselves first whether we have our

technicians in the right vehicle for the job, and second, whether the vehicle upfitting package is optimal for balancing costs and functionality,” she explains. “Based on type of equipment carried, payload requirements, miles driven, and other factors relevant to the Hussmann service fleet, we determined we could go from Ford E350 vans to E250s, saving on vehicle costs as well as fuel and other expenses.” Messer adds that through the kaizen event, the manufacturer was also able to take 500 lbs. and thousands of dollars out of the upfitting package for the Hussmann fleet. Last November, the manufacturer held another kaizen event to evaluate the service trucks used in the Ingersoll Rand Industrial Technologies business sector. Based on final analysis of the data from that event, the company may be switching from trucks to vans. According to Messer, engineers from Wheels Inc. have played a vital role in these vehicle utilization studies. “Perhaps the most important thing they do for us is give consistent and reliable service. We deal with just one national account manager for all our questions and concerns, and their online tool provides us with access to our fleet data 24/7. Wheels’ maintenance expertise also saves us a great deal of money every year.”

Call 1-800-235-6577 For Complete Details

ou’ve heard the stories from dump trailer owners about wind, muddy or uneven ground, power lines, operator error, and height restrictions. Ultimately, all these conditions have a cost them money and are potentially dangerous. Eagle Bridge Trailers™ are gentle enough for perishables, yet strong enough for virtually any load, including gravel and corrosive waste products. Designed to withstand the rigors of field work, rural roads, and tight confines, our unique frameless design provides superior strength and flexibility, with remarkably light weight (more payload). Our lowmaintenance chain-and-flap conveyor unloading system is faster and cleaner than a walking floor trailer and easier to operate than a dump style trailer. Compare features, advantages, and resale values with other trailer designs and you’ll find out why the only stories about Eagle Bridge trailers are good ones. Call 1-800-235-6577 for more information, or for a dealer near you.
