The 2010 impact

W

We’re starting to get a clearer picture of the price increases ahead for new trucks in 2010—increases required to cover the costs of governmentmandated emissions-control technology. Will these increases help slow new-truck sales? Absolutely, say many industry insiders. And there will also be repercussions for used-truck buyers and owners. Several OEMs have released their pricing surcharges, and they range from as little as $6,000 for smaller The used market will engines to over $9,000 for larger powerplants. take a hit from 2010 Of course, that’s not the entire pricing story. The surcharges are engine surcharges. subject to Federal excise and sales taxes, raising the cost for meeting 2010 requirements another $2,000 per truck or more. Expect many fleets, large and small alike, to look at these numbers and decide to hold off on buying new equipment for a while. Unfortunately, this will eventually translate into older, worn trucks coming into the used-truck market when they do decide to buy. I also think we’ll see a spike in demand for late-model, low-mileage used trucks as fleets and individuals look for ways to swap out aging equipment for stuff that’s not quite as old nor as expensive as new trucks. Needless to say, new-truck pricing in 2010 is going to reverberate down through the used market for a few years. Now may be the time to adjust your used-equipment purchase plans—before the models you want end up in short supply. AT

Heavy steer urban, regional tires offered

T

he HSU2 (heavy steer urban) tire introduced by Continental Tire North America offers increased tread life and 17% more wear volume than its predecessor, the HSU, according to the tire maker. The redesigned tire includes a wider 26/32in. deep rib design and is formulated with a cut- and tear-resistant tread compound to provide improved wear in high-scrub and on/ off-road applications. The HSU2 is available in a 315/80R22.5 size. Other benefits include a patented system that ejects rocks and other debris from the tire’s grooves to prevent trapping and drilling, and protects against cracking and tearing. The company’s Visual Alignment Indicator (VAI) system, which is a series of sipes at graduated tread depths equally spaced around the inside and outside of the shoulder

ribs, is said to allow for quick detection of wear differences between the shoulder ribs that can indicate alignment problems. The company has also introduced the HSR2 for “heavy steer regional” applications and the HTL1, a wide-base tire for “heavy trailer longhaul” use. The HSR2 replaces C ont i ne nt a l’s H SR model. With a four-rib design for higher lateral stability and resistance to side forces commonly found in regional applications, it includes a groove geometry that allows the use of more complex groove designs by undercutting, or tunneling under, the groove features, the tiremaker said. Higher tread endurance and a 15% increase in removal miles over the original HSR design are said to be other benefits. www.continental-truck.com

New a/c system keeps day cabs cool

A

s the temperature inside day cabs heats up, drivers can now get relief with a new battery-powered air conditioning system from Bergstrom designed specifically for their environment. The Nite day cab noidle system helps reduce idling times in fleets operating day cabs, the company said. “Just like their long-haul counterparts, day-cab drivers are subject to state and local idling restrictions,” said Bill Gordon, national director of aftermarket and director of global marketing. “This truly offers fleets the opportunity to keep day-cab drivers comfortable in the hot weather while adhering to anti-idling regulations.” The system uses the same technology as Bergstrom’s Nite Plus unit, but is installed as a split system. The compressor and evaporator are installed between the truck’s seats, and the condenser is mounted to the exterior of the cab.

Bergstrom’s cooling system keeps day cabs cool without the need to idle. It is powered by one or two deepcycle, absorbed glass mat batteries. A separator is utilized to ensure the truck’s battery maintains enough power to start the vehicle. During normal truck operation, the system recharges through the alternator. An optional heating unit is included and uses just 0.05 gals. of fuel per hour. The a/c unit does not require any fuel usage. The Nite system is CARB-approved. www.nitesystem.com

In-cab video improves vehicle safety

F

leets using in-cab video recorders connected to Internet-based management systems are finding they can significantly improve the effectiveness of their safety programs, reducing the risk of vehicle crashes while improving driver behavior and skill. Loomis Armored recently wrapped up a sixmonth study that involved over 2,800 of its drivers and 1,000 of its vehicles equipped with the SmartDrive Measured Safety Program from SmartDrive Systems Inc. Danny Pack, Loomis’ senior vp-risk management, said collision frequency decreased 53% over the study period, with a corresponding reduction in four other key driver-related metrics: distraction (dropped 54%); fatigue (declined 56%); non-use of seat belts (fell 68%); and incidents of speeding (cut 53%)

Studies show that cameras can dramatically improve safety. “While having a safe fleet is our objective, as with any area of improvement, you cannot sit on your laurels. We owe it to our employees, our customers and the general public to continuously seek ways to prevent injury and provide value,” Pack told American Trucker. “In these economic times it is easy to put off investment ... and a good risk manager knows there is no

silver bullet, no one thing that will eliminate all your risk,” he added. “[But] this has been one of those tools which exceeded our expectations. As noted earlier, our goal is reducing the possibility of injury to our employees, customers and the public. I can think of no greater gain than what we’ve achieved here.” A different in-cab video technology study involving two fleets conducted by the

Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration used DriveCam’s in-cab video system. The study involved 100 trucks (both long haul and short haul) over a 17-week period and showed risky driving events fell 52.2% in one fleet and 37% in the second for vehicles running the DriveCam Driver Risk Management Program, said Jeff Hickman, VTTI’s lead researcher. “Both carriers significantly reduced the mean frequency of recorded events/miles traveled from baseline to intervention,” Hickman said. “The results prove that the combination of onboard safety monitoring and behavioral coaching were responsible for the significant reduction in the mean frequency of events/miles traveled at both carriers.” —SEAN KILCARR

(VDC) have jointly published a white paper addressing the importance of using total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis in acquiring mobile technology solutions. The paper is titled “Mapping Technical and Operational Challenges of Mobile Computing Deployments: Using TCO Analysis to Identify the Ideal Mobile Computing Solution for Frontline Workers.” According to Panasonic,

supply chain logistics and transportation organizations often make mobile investment decisions with incomplete information or have a general misunderstanding of the environments in which their solutions are to be deployed. While my idle tires, posing opinion, it’sI’mjustfairly dent that thoupotential dangers. confi sands of truck tires and casings are unnecessarily scrapped on an annual basis because the sidewall rubber starts to develop small cracks. The weatherchecking or “dry rot,” as it’s known, poses no risk to the performance of the casing in its minor stages. In fact, in order for it to result in any damage, it must extend to the steel body cables or be greater than 2/32 of an inch deep. Of course, not all sidewall cracks should be ignored. Large circumferential cracks about an inch above the rim flange and small cracks near the shoulder should be inspected by a tire professional. But just like the theory that all roadside tire debris is the result of faulty retreads, the court of public opinion has already determined that all tires with sidewall cracks should be immediately removed from service. Manufacturers have made advances in developing compounds resistant to the effects of ozone and ultraviolet (UV) rays, but most tires will still develop some cosmetic cracking as they age, even when perfectly maintained and stored indoors. While age plays a role, it’s not the only factor. I’ve seen six-year-old casings with minor weather-checking and three-year-old original tread tires with cracks so numerous and deep I was

18 American Trucker/ r/September 2009

amazed the tire was still inflated. While it’s human nature to be skeptical of the casing’s integrity, it bears repeating that the cracks typically need to be 2/32 of an inch deep in order for there to be any concern. Unfortunately, the law enforcement community will instinctively be drawn to tires with severe weather-checking, so fleets and operators are forced to take steps to prevent them from being left in service. Since it’s inevitable, the first key to preventing this is to make sure the tires get regular exercise. As I mentioned previously, chemicals are added to rubber compounds to combat the effects of ozone and UV light. In order for those additives to minimize or prevent weather-checking, however, the tires must be periodically operated so the rubber flexes and remains pliable. The longer tires sit, the more susceptible they become to weather-checking, so fleets need to find ways to rotate idle equipment into service. And companies that purchase used tractors or trailers should also carefully inspect the tires because in some cases they may need to be replaced. Another factor that contributes to weather-checking is the excessive use of protective sidewall “dressings” and caustic tire cleaners. Most of these products actually contribute to the problem by drawing the chemicals to the surface and away from the rubber. It’s also important to note that prolonged underinflation and heat damage can increase the rate and severity of the cracking so basic maintenance is vital. Since weather-checking is unavoidable, fleets and drivers should not be alarmed when small cosmetic cracks start appearing on the sidewall. If there is any doubt, contact the tire manufacturer or a tire professional for their assessment before scrapping the tire.

ike the tires mounted on them, heavy-duty wheels increasingly can be selected by considering various specific advantages engineered into them—for everything from lighter weight to maintenance-friendly finishes. Not surprisingly, major wheel manufacturers are missing no opportunity to put material and manufacturing technologies to work to ensure their product offerings deliver greater value to fleet owners and truck operators. For example, Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products said the LvL One aluminum wheel it rolled out earlier this year boasts not only new materials and design, but also a new manufacturing process. It will eventually replace Alcoa’s existing line of 24.5 x 8.25 truck wheels—but without a price increase, the manufacturer emphasized. “Our intent from the beginning was to bring this new product offering into the core part of the wheel market we serve, not bring it in as a premium product,” said Tim Myers, president of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products. “We plan on offering the LvL One as our ‘base family’ of truck wheels.” The aluminum wheel is 2 lbs. lighter than Alcoa’s previous offering, which translates into a 36-lb. savings for an entire tractor-trailer, Myers pointed out. And he said that advantage grows to 650 lbs. when compared to standard steel wheels. Myers noted that Alcoa field-tested the LvL One wheel with three high-mileage, high-payload fleets. While weighing in at 30 lbs. less than a typical steel wheel in the 24.5 x 8.25 in. category, the LvL One wheel boasts a 7,850-lb. rating, which, according to Alcoa, is highest in its class. The wheel is designed for vocational, construction and over-the-road trucks and trailers, and is designated for use with load range H tires. This summer, Accuride Corp. said it was increasing the availability of its enhanced finish for aluminum wheels. The finishing process, which produces a semi-polished

appearance on unpolished wheels, is now available as standard across the company’s aluminum wheel product line, excluding small-diameter trailer wheels. “When customers compare Accuride’s standard enhanced finish to the competition’s standard machinefinished wheel, we feel they will be amazed at the difference,” stated Rick Schomer, senior vp of marketing & sales. “Our enhanced finish provides the driver with the look of an upgraded aluminum wheel at standard aluminum wheel pricing.” And certainly reflecting the growing applicationspecificity of wheels, Accuride announced jointly with Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. in July that Accuride’s powder-coated steel wheels will be standard on all trailers produced by Utility at their five regional plants (located in Clearfield, UT; Paragould, AR; Glade Spring, VA; Adkins, VA; and Enterprise, AL). The new wheel standard was to be effective on all trailers starting the first of this month. According to Hayes Lemmerz, its wheels “set standards in weight optimization, finish [E-coat or custom color top-coats] and fatigue life. All of our wheels are tested and certified to the most stringent test criteria.” The company said its hub-piloted tubeless wheels can be used for single- or dual-wheel applications and for steer, drive or trailer axle positions. “The primary advantage of our wheel is that a single, right-hand threaded, cone lock nut is used on each bolt,” said Hayes Lemmerz. “In contrast, traditional stud-piloted systems incorporate spherical countersinks on each stud hole, which require multiple left-hand/right-hand fasteners. Positive hub piloting and cone lock clamping leads to improved wheel life and simplified maintenance. There are no inner wheel nuts to freeze on or to complicate re-torquing.” Hayes Lemmerz noted its stud-piloted FOR MORE INFORMATION, tubeless wheels “in- VISIT THESE WEB SITES: corporate inner and ACCURIDE CORP. outer cap nuts so that www.accuridewheels.com each wheel is tightened and torqued individu- ALCOA ally.” These wheels are www.alcoawheels.com/lvlone available in standard or heavy-duty stud-pilot- HAYES LEMMERZ ed mountings based on www.hayes-lemmerz.com load capacity.

Invest Wisely Driver Comfort:

BY LARRY KAHANER, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR

Choosing the right accessories can make all the difference

Y

ou are in your truck all day, every day, and not only do you need all the physical comfort you can get, but sometimes you deserve a few amenities as well, such as the latest entertainment devices. Whether driving a Class 8 truck or a medium-duty rig, your truck is a home away from home, and it should be as comfortable and inviting as your living room. We’ll be looking at three retrofit ideas that can improve your driving life—entertainment, climate control and seating. By installing these goodies, not only will it help companies retain and recruit drivers, but it also increases the vehicle’s resale value while bringing a little more happiness to work.

One of the more exciting innovations is up-to-the-minute traffic and road reports. While you’re listening, updated information is sent to your navigation system about accidents, scheduled road closings, traffic flow and other traffic-related news. One hint about installation: Many truckers simply use the built-in antenna and lay the radio where it ‘can see’ the sky. If this works where you travel most, that’s fine, but some truckers prefer to hook up an outside antenna either permanently or by using a magnetic mount. How much will all this cost? Radios are all over the price range, from under a hundred dollars for a bare-bones receiver (there are even some close-out deals for under $50) to hundreds of dollars for a unit with all the bells and whistles. The monthly fee swings widely based on your plan (a la carte or all channels), and whatever special deal is running at the time. On average, expect to pay under $15 a month for a subscription.

CLIMATE CONTROL

I

f you’re a long-haul driver, you already know about the cumbersome patchwork quilt of state and local restrictions on engine idling. Besides, idling for heating or cooling is expensive and you can’t always find a place to park that has an outside climate/Internet/electricity hookup. Although all new trucks come with an APU option, many used trucks don’t have them factory-installed. Fortunately, the aftermarket is booming when it

APUs maintain the cab’s environment when the truck is not running. comes to APUs, but you must ask the right questions before you decide to buy. W Determine your needs. Do you spend enough downtime in your truck to make the investment in an APU worthwhile? A North Carolina State University study released last year suggests that using APUs to reduce idling is not cost-effective for trucks that idle less than four hours a day. When fuel prices are high, the study recommends APUs for trucks that idle daily more than seven hours. W Make sure the APU can deliver the comfort level you require. Ascertain that the unit will handle the size of your cab and the outside conditions that you encounter most. Truckers who usually stop in the mountains during the winter months have different needs than those who traverse the southern states in summer. W Make sure the APU’s alternator or generator is powerful enough to handle all of your electrical needs, including television, radio, computer and refrigerator. A heavyduty alternator/generator will not only last longer, but will be less likely to fail. W Listen to the APU and see if it’s quiet. Some can be downright noisy and keep you and nearby

truckers awake. In general, the more cylinders the APU has, the smoother and quieter it will perform. W Study options. One option in particular should be included in your APU: shore power capability. If you find a place with outside electrical power, you will want to use that instead of burning diesel fuel in your APU. Another option to consider is battery power. Battery systems typically charge off the truck’s alternator when the engine is running, and then use that stored energy to provide heating and cooling. The length of time your cab will stay cool or warm will vary, of course, but eight solid hours is not unusual. In some states, such as California, this may be the best option. Many manufacturers disavow warranties unless the APU was installed by a certified technician. No matter how handy you are, you may want to turn the installation over to someone else. Also, most APU problems are caused by poor installation. If you want the most

SEATS

T

ruck makers have done a terrific job researching what makes a seat comfortable. Every model year they have improved seats, not only making them easier on the backside, but easier on the lower back, legs and every part that aches from many hours on the road. But what if the seat has done its service or you’re itching for a new model? What do you look for in the aftermarket? First and most importantly, try it. Sit down and see how it feels as you put your butt in the seat, hands on the steering wheel, and reach for the knobs and switches. While this may appear basic, many

There are even heating and cooling options for day cabs these days. from your purchase, have an expert put it in. As for pricing, APUs are expensive and many APU dealers have a plug-in spreadsheet that will help determine which APU is best for you based on your driving criteria and your budget. It will show how much you can save by using the APU instead of idling. In the end, because you spend so much time in your cab, just making a few aftermarket additions will help make that time more enjoyable. mail-order dealers complain that people buy seats based on a previous model they liked, on the word of a friend, or by sitting in a buddy’s seat while at a truck stop. This is not good enough. Seat contours change shape depending upon the driver, so only try a new one. Keep in mind that like a pair of shoes, seats need a little bit of getting used to, but don’t assume that you can live with a seat that doesn’t fit quite right, hoping it will work itself in. As far as features are concerned, there’s a long list, including wider seats, extra thick foam padding, adjustable lumbar support (very important if you suffer from back pain), and logic controls so you can get back to your favorite settings

When purchasing a seat, remember that it’s used for more than just driving. in a snap. Go for the full reclining models. Consider all options despite the additional expense. Especially consider options such as heating and cooling systems and massage units that may seem over-luxurious to some hard-core drivers. You will be glad you got them. Also, go for fully adjustable armrests and make sure they feel good on your elbows and forearms. No chafing allowed. Go for the best heavy-duty dampening system that you can afford, including those that dampen side motion. Check the durability cycle tests in which a weight (sometimes as much as 300 lbs.) is placed in the seat for millions of cycles. The more cycles before breakdown, the better. Another issue to consider is what you do in the seat. With so many advanced technologies and in-cab communications systems, drivers no longer just sit in their seat to drive. Whether you work on a laptop, have a mounted computer, GPS, etc., it’s vital that you are comfortable and

can reach all the proper controls for these devices with minimal effort. The last thing you want is the seat to get in the way of reaching controls, causing a potential road hazard as you twist your body to access a safety

notification that may have come via your computer. While we’ve discussed comfort options, there are two safety features that need to be considered. First, the seat belt. Make sure it fits comfortably. Drivers who are taller or shorter than average need to make certain that the belts not only fit properly safety-wise, but also comfort-wise. Second, consider the headrest. For maximum safety, your head must touch the headrest and not extend over it. Lastly, consider the material. This is a matter of personal taste. Some drivers prefer leather; others prefer cloth. Leather lasts longer, looks better and resists stains, but some drivers don’t like the feel of it against their skin when they’re wearing shorts or short sleeves. Price? When you check the web, prices are all over the map—from several hundred dollars to over a thousand. Because suppliers are so competitive, they may not give you an online price quote until you fill out a form. If you’re serious about getting the best price, fill it out. AT

MUNICIPAL FLEET

Dumping emissions Hybrids tackle government work

B

B nty, TX, wraps around the city of San Antonio and then s tretches out to encompass the more rural areas beyond, and the county’s fleet of trucks and other equipment mirrors this diversity. Seventy-eight Class 7 and 8 trucks and 55 pieces of assorted other heavy equipment, from street sweepers to paving machines, help meet the needs of the county’s urban and rural citizens. “We have a very diverse fleet,” says Tony Vasquez, street and drainage manager. “Our unusual combination of city and rural areas in Bexar County means that we need many types of equipment, and we put more miles on some of our trucks than you might expect in a county fleet. Some of our heavyduty trucks run 20,000 to 25,000 mi. per year, largely in stop-and-go operations. That kind of duty cycle is tough on trucks.” The special challenges of these operations were part of what made Vasquez and his equipment maintenance coordinator, Joe Reyna, decide to consider adding hybrid trucks to the fleet. “Bexar County is not in a non-attainment area, and we want to make sure it stays that way,” says Vasquez. “In 2007, the county adopted an energy policy with the primary goals to reduce and conserve energy and promote

environmental responsibility. The policy also promoted the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles to help reduce emissions. “When fuel prices began to rise, the timing was right to test hybrids in our heavy-duty fleet,” he adds. Vasquez says he had clipped an article about hybrids a couple of years ago and saved it, so he asked Reyna, whose crew maintains all the equipment, to “look into hybrids.” This June, the fleet took delivery of three Kenworth T370 diesel-electric hybrids, all equipped with 6-yd. dump bodies and fitted with crew cabs. Pintle hitches also enable the hybrids to tow trailers so that work crews can bring equipment such as skid steers, small rollers and shredders to job sites. The hybrids are powered by Paccar PX-6 engines rated at 260 hp. and delivering 620 lbs.-ft. of torque with Eaton’s diesel-electric hybrid power system. Electricity generated through regenerative braking is stored in the frame-mounted lithium-ion battery pack and used for acceleration, assisting the diesel engine. The power take-off (PTO) for the dump body is run off the PX-6. While the new trucks have only been in service a short time, Vasquez says they are already seeing better fuel economy than Kenworth

advertised. “We took delivery of the trucks on June 24,” he says, “and they went right to work. Kenworth advertises a 30% reduction in fuel usage, but we are actually seeing a higher savings than that. Our older trucks are getting about 6 mpg and the new hybrids are getting 10.1 mpg already. The trucks are really working, too. Those dump bodies are loaded.” According to Vasquez, drivers love the new trucks because they are comfortable and roomy and they do a good job. “The drivers have no performance complaints about the hybrids,” he says. “They all want to be the one to get to drive them.” Reyna and Vasquez trained certain drivers to operate the hybrids to help assure the most efficient and safe operation of the new vehicles. “Besides saving fuel, safety is our number-one concern,” Vasquez notes. Down the road, Vasquez hopes to add other hybrid equipment to the fleet. “Street sweepers would just be a perfect application for hybrids,” he says, “plus Caterpillar has a hybrid dozer and Komatsu has a hybrid excavator.” For now, however, other government agencies and other counties have been calling to ask how the new trucks are working out and Bexar County is giving them high marks.
