With so much additional electronics and hardware being added to trucks these days, you’d be forgiven for assuming that more and more of the maintenance required should be handled by wiser hands than your own. That’s not necessarily so, however. “You can still do a lot of maintenance yourself. In terms of the normal repairs you’ve seen over the years, nothing has changed much,” Darry Stuart, president of DWS Fleet Management, told me recently. “It’s still mainly about oil changes, tires, lubrication, hoses, etc.” In fact, do-it-yourself maintenance is in some ways a lot easier these days, he said, as components such Maintenance remains as transmissions and rear-ends last much longer and don’t break down a DIY project. nearly as much as they once did. Like any smart truck owner— especially in the used equipment arena, where the operating hours and miles pile up fast—he noted that maintenance is all about making the right choices. It still boils down to knowing what’s practical to do yourself and when it makes sense to send the work to an outside provider. Stuart knows of what he speaks, I might add. A former fleet manager with over 30 years of experience taking care of everything from over-theroad tractors to refuse trucks, Stuart’s business now revolves around helping all sorts of fleets get their maintenance practices and vehicle specs in order. He’s also the former chairman of the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC), and you’ll find more dollops of his accumulated wisdom in our cover story this month on DIY maintenance, written by Larry Kahaner. The upshot of all this is you can still perform a lot of maintenance yourself, despite all the advances in truck technology in recent years—and that’s a good thing, especially where your wallet is concerned. Appearances can be deceiving, especially on critical parts for your engine. Close inspection between Genuine Cummins Parts and “will-fit” parts reveals dramatic differences in design, tolerances and materials. Differences that can result in early failure, unscheduled downtime and increased repair costs. Don’t take unnecessary risks – make sure that every engine part you get is Genuine Cummins, every time. Tires for urban and regional driving

G

oodyear has released two regional truck tires the company said will increase tire life in urban and regional driving conditions. The G661 HSA and G662 RSA offer deeper tread depth and enhanced tread designs and compounds to fit the needs of multiple applications ranging from city delivery, to beverage, to emergency vehicles and buses, said the tire maker. “The local haul and regional segments are diverse and about as tough as it gets when it comes to wear on commercial tires,” said Donn Kramer, Goodyear’s director of marketing for commercial tires. “With the amount of scrubbing and curb damage the tires undergo, fleets need tires that are robust and able to provide a low cost per mile through multiple retreads.” Both tires include Goodyear’s Fuel Max technology. The G661 HSA

F

steer and all-position tire is built with a high scrub-resistant tread, using multi-compound construction to help extend tread life. The G662 RSA is intended for regional and local haul applications as a steer and all-position tire and offers a pressure distribution groove, a first for Goodyear, to spread weight across the tread for uniform wear. The tires have a 22/32-in. tread depth, 2/32 in. deeper than previous Goodyear regional tires. TredLock technology, featuring interlocking microgrooves, helps to stiffen and stabilize the tread for long tread life, the company said. Most sizes include a new casing design that features fullsized, super-tensile steel belts to help reinforce the tread for enhanced toughness. The tires are available in 11R22.5, 295/75R22.5 and 11R24.5 sizes. www.goodyear.com

ormulated to be an all-around fuel additive for virtually any vehicle, the Rislone fuel injector cleaner fluid from Bar’s Products is designed to help eliminate noisy injectors and fuel pumps, rough idle, hard starting and hesitation. At the same time, the company claims the product also increases vehicle power, performance and fuel mileage. Jim Moffitt, vp-sales and marketing for Bar’s Products, noted the new injector cleaning fluid contains a unique blend of additives that clean and lubricate the entire fuel system. With continued use, it reduces the carbon buildup that can cause pre-ignition, power loss, burned valves and broken rings, he added. “A key ingredient is the Rislone Upper Cylinder Lubricant [UCL], formulated to lubricate the entire fuel system, starting in the fuel tank and fuel lines, where it helps prevent rust and corrosion,” Moffitt said. “It also lubricates and protects the fuel pump for longer life and quieter operation, while cleaning the injectors, allowing them to work more efficiently.” Not only are cylinder deposits, including gum and varnish, removed, but as the UCL treats the upper cylinder, a lubricating film is formed to help prevent carbon from sticking so that it can be burned off, he pointed out. The standard dose is approximately 3 oz. per 10 gals. of fuel. Moffitt said this dose can be safely doubled for vehicles with known fuel lubrication problems without voiding the warranties of a new vehicle. www.barsproducts.com

Light, air brake system testing

L

arger fleets can save time testing trailer light and air brake systems by using Square Wheel Industries’ Express Mobile, the company said. An isolation valve on the unit allows leakdown tests on individual air valves. The company says it takes just two minutes, start to finish, to check all lighting functions and the air brake system. According to Square Wheel, technicians can check up to 20 trailers an hour, including setup, disconnect and walk time. A built-in scanner function tests lighting in sequence (left, center, right) to help isolate shorts. A remote

allows technicians to use their walkaround time more effectively. Modern ABS computers test themselves when a trailer’s auxiliary circuit is first powered or, on some systems, each time the stop light circuit is powered. Express Mobile powers a trailer’s circuits to initiate the test, the company said. The remote helps with an ABS test switch to control the auxiliary and stop light circuits. This allows technicians to begin testing while standing behind or alongside the trailer, rather than walking to a tractor to turn the lights on. www.squarewheelindustries.com

t’s estimated that a typical highway tractor can spend up to 40% of its useful life idling—most of it done while not under way, but rather to power the heating and cooling systems so long-haul drivers are comfortable when off duty. That results not only in a lot of wasted fuel, but also a lot of pollution. Josh Lupu, marketing services manager for Webasto Product North America, said that’s why the company developed BlueCool, a bunk cooling system that, in addition to Webasto’s Air Top 2000 and EVO devices, can keep the sleeper berth cool or warm without running the truck’s engine. Webasto displayed fully functioning BlueCool and Air Top systems on a highway tractor in front of the U.S. Capitol as part of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Assn’.s (MEMA) annual legislative summit. Lupu said that Webasto’s BlueCool product is noteworthy in that it uses special graphite blocks to provide bunk cooling for long periods. Hank Keene, Webasto technical coordinator, noted that coolant surrounding the blocks is frozen during normal operation. Once the engine is turned off, it helps keep the bunk area 25 deg. cooler than the outside temperature for hours at a time, since the graphite blocks help slow the “melting” of the coolant substantially. “I’ve done my own tests with this in Atlanta, when the outside temperature reached 102 deg.,” Keene said. “Even with people coming in and out of the truck all day long, [BlueCool] kept the bunk area at around 72 deg. for six hours.” Lupu noted that BlueCool only weighs a little over 300 lbs. and requires minimum frame rail space for installation. www.bluecooltruck.com

Biodiesel law passed in Iowa

I

owa’s Senate recently passed legislation creating a new biodiesel fuel quality standard requiring the use of 5% biodiesel fuel throughout the state. The bill was written and introduced by state Senate president Jack Kibbie (D-Emmetsburg) and sponsored by 30 other state senators. It’s being viewed as both an energy-security and jobscreation measure, noted Randy Olson, executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board. “This vote confirms that biodiesel is not only good for Iowa

12 American Trucker/ r/July y 2009

farmers and the environment, but it also adds to national security by decreasing our dependence on foreign oil,” Olson said. “I want to thank the senators for their hard work crafting this legislation.” Senate File 464 would make Iowa the eighth state to adopt a biodiesel fuel quality standard, he added, calling for every gallon of diesel sold in Iowa to be at least a B5 mixture, starting Sept. 1 of this year. It also provides a 3¢/gal. refundable tax credit to retailers that sell diesel of at least a B10 variety.

Go to

ongress will take another stab at passing legislation providing tax credits for vehicle safety systems, including brake stroke monitoring, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning and collision warning technology. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Advanced Safety Technology Tax Act of 2009 (H.R. 2024) mirrors a similar bill introduced last year that failed to get passed. It would amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide a credit against income tax for the adoption of safety systems. The legislation encompasses both the original equipment and aftermarket installation and also creates a tax credit valued at 50% of the retail cost of the system with a maximum of $1,500 per technology; allows fleets to purchase multiple technologies, but limits the total credit to $3,500 per vehicle; and allows the overall tax credit for each truck owner or trucking company of up to $350,000 per year for all covered technology purchases.

Bus service Oil switch extends drains, improves performance for tour line When you’re hauling people for a living, you can’t afford to skimp on maintenance. In this high-dollar age of fleet operations, you try to save where you can without compromising the health and safety of your equipment. That’s the mantra followed by Doug Hansen, owner of Peru, IL-based Green River Lines, a full-service bus and tour company that offers nationwide service. His fleet of ten Prevost tour buses—called “coaches”— are powered by Series 60 Detroit Diesel engines that crank out 430 hp. and carry a maximum of 56 people. A fully loaded coach weighs about 45,000 lbs. and travels, on average, 65,000 mi. per year. Depending on the tour, on-road travel days could be as long as 12 hours. Tours

operate year-round and, in many cases, the coaches travel throughout wide temperature extremes and climates. As you might expect, Hansen’s buses require a lot of oil changes, which aren’t cheap. As a result, he wanted to upgrade to both an engine and gear oil that would allow him to safely extend drain intervals without compromising wear protection or increasing maintenance downtime. “My dad started this company 30 years ago and now our buses go everywhere,” Hansen says. “We wanted to cut down on oil changes to save money, but we didn’t want that decision to compromise the life expectancy of our equipment.” So he started working with Uranich Coal & Oil in LaSalle, IL, a local oil distributor, to see what oils might do the trick.

Hansen decided to switch to Petro-Canada’s Duron-E 15W-40 heavy-duty engine oil and Traxon E Synthetic 75W-90 gear oil. On the engine oil side of the ledger, Hansen reports he’s been able to safely extend drain intervals out to 25,000 mi. for both newer and older engines alike, as it’s suitable for use in ’07 and pre’07 EPA compliant low-emissions engines. “[Duron-E 15W-40] performed really well yearround in all of the temperature extremes we tour through. Even my 1998 engines don’t have any start-up issues anymore,” he says. “It’s nice to have peace of mind, knowing that our oil is working to reduce the risk of equipment failure or downtime.” He also reports spend-

ing “a lot less” on general maintenance and service. Make no mistake, though, Duron-E 15W-40 is a premium engine oil blend, so it costs more than many other formulations. Yet Hansen reports the benefits of that higher price come from easier cold-weather startup, minimized engine wear and oil consumption, plus longer drain intervals. Hansen says the company also saved money by switching to Traxon E Synthetic 75W-90 heavy-duty, extreme pressure GL-5 gear lubricant. “Before we switched, we used to drain and change the oil every year,” he says. “Now we just check the oil levels periodically, but don’t drain and change until about every three years.”

VeriWise to track at pallet level G

E Asset Intelligence is ready to begin testing a new version of its VeriWise system that will be capable of tracking assets down to the pallet or even item level as they move in trailers, containers, rail cars and other vehicles. Developed with SandLinks Inc. of Israel, the in-transit total asset visibility (ITAV) system promises mobile inventory management and the ability to monitor asset conditions as they move through the supply chain, according to GE Asset. The system starts with smart, low-power and ultralow-cost RFID tags for pallets or individual items. VeriWise’s onboard hardware will integrate an RFID reader to identify tagged assets as they are loaded or unloaded and monitor conditions during transit. That data will then be transmitted wirelessly over the VeriWise dual-mode satellite and cellularbased communications networks.

The system will be ready for customer and proof-of-concept testing in the third quarter of this year. Earlier this year, the company released a “virtual hubometer” service for its VeriWise system. The new GPS Mileage feature doesn’t require any additional hardware and is said to provide accurate reports for monitoring mileage-based trailer maintenance and mileage billing by trailer leasing companies. It can track up to 21 individual items. www.ge.com

Remote shutdown now available

A

s part of an update for its PowerVue hosted fleet management system, Cadec Global will offer what it calls the “first softwarebased, remote-engine shutdown technology.” This option is the first application in the company’s line of ProTecht safety modules. The shutdown can be requested by a driver using a hidden “panic” button or initiated by a fleet manager or dispatcher alerted to unauthorized moves or vehicles departing from assigned routes. Once the shutdown request is processed using PowerVue’s webbased interface, an authorized security team will begin a controlled shutdown, first powering down the engine while maintaining power steering control and eventually bringing the vehicle to a complete halt. Restarting the truck requires entry of an unlock code generated by the system and onboard authorization using Cadec’s OBC. Cadec said the new shutdown module meets U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and Transportation Security Administration criteria for federal grants. Other upgrades announced for PowerVue include advanced mapping with Google and Microsoft Live Earth maps and aerial photos. The system allows fleets to overlay actual GPS route histories on hybrid maps for reviewing driver performance or route activity. Fleet managers can choose to replay a single incident, a shift or day, and can even request a flyover recreation of an entire trip. www.cadec.com

Integrated driver training, management

A

popular driver training program and safety and risk management solution have been integrated to offer fleets a onestop solution, according to ThoughtDrivers. The company’s SafetyBox software has been joined with ProTread from Instructional Technologies Inc. (ITI) to provide seamless integration with real-time driving records, accident management, regulatory compliance, human resources and risk-profile information as well as Pro-Tread’s remediation capabilities. “The innovative integration of these software packages enables fleets to manage employee training requirements with maximum efficiency, alerting employees to specific training assignments, and

assuring and documenting compliance,” said Sam Liberto, ThoughtDrivers CEO. The combination will allow fleets to document and manage risk effectively as well as improve driver performance by providing a simple, costeffective integrated solution, said ITI president & CEO Jim Voorhees. Users of SafetyBox can identify hidden risks and immediately engage the driver or warehouse worker with task-specific, Pro-Tread training and documentation, ThoughtDrivers said. Among the lessons available are safety and defensive driving, HOS and logbook training, fatigue management, fuel management, OSHA and workplace safety, and hazmat training and recertification. www.thoughtdrivers.com

new web-based service promises real-time visibility into fleet operations, allowing managers to locate, track, monitor and even control inventory and assets. The OneView from Pedigree Technogies collects information from multiple sources and is available in vertical applications, including OneView for Fleet and Field Services. The service replaces onsite manual monitoring with remote services, such as notification when a refrigeration unit may need service. In addition, it helps identify potential problems before they become major repairs; allows companies to purchase just one

system rather than separate systems for each type of asset they own; and help is provided by the company’s IT staff. Businesses only pay for services needed, with the ability to add features a la carte. “We have the perfect storm to create this solution,” said Alex Warner, founder and CEO. “The combination of lower wireless and cellular communication costs, cheap sensor hardware and centralized web software allowed us to create a machine-to-machine system that previously only major corporations and government and military customers could afford.” www.pedigreetechnologies.com

Finding available productivity N OnlineAVL2 vehicle tracking and logistics system. The program’s new Out of Service report can pinpoint vehicles which, based on travel distance and ignition time thresholds set by a manager, have available productivity, Navman said. The report displays average daily distances, average daily ignition time, average daily number of trips, total distances and total ignition time for all vehicles that fail to meet the designated thresholds. The update is the second enhancement in recent months. Previously, an executive summary report was added that consolidates performance indicators for multiple vehicle groups or an entire fleet on a single screen. “Identifying underutilized vehicles in a larger fleet has always been a challenge. If a vehicle is lagging behind on road time, you can’t detect that in a fleet-wide performance report,” said vp Renaat Ver Eecke. “Our new Out of Service report analyzes performance at the vehicle level and steers managers directly to the trucks or vans that aren’t keeping up with the rest of the fleet. This is a vital first step to optimizing operations for individual vehicles.” The report is included with new purchases; existing customers will receive a free upgrade, either on request or during the next scheduled update. www.navmanwireless.com

It’s a shame that the average motorist still thinks retreads are the cause of roadside tire debris despite the fact that every credible study has proven this to be false. When a truck tire fails on the highway and scatters pieces of rubber and belt package, it’s often a nuisance for other motorists and can result in minor body and/or suspension damage. Seriaccidents are Video depicts ous typically related to evasive the damage from high-speed maneuvers that can the driver of wheel-end failure. cause the vehicle to lose control after trying to avoid the debris, but these accidents are rarely fatal from a purely statistical perspective. The same cannot be said for wheel-off incidents where inflated truck tire and wheel assemblies become separated from a vehicle and turn into 200-lb. unguided missiles. At highway speed, the force of a tire traveling 65 mph results in a level of destruction that can only be described as devastating. Wheel-off accidents tend to make headlines because they often result in major damage with fatal results. But the danger does not stop at loose wheels. When bearings are improperly installed, poorly maintained, or operated with insufficient or contaminated oil, excessive heat in the wheel end can cause a fire, which can consume the vehicle and the contents of the cargo area if the tires fully ignite. Likewise, improperly adjusted and frozen brakes can also generate extreme heat levels that have the potential to set the tires on fire. Prevention starts with proper inspection by drivers and proper installation by maintenance personnel. The Tire Industry Assn. (TIA) and Michelin North America

18 American Trucker/ r/July 2009

(MNA) have partnered to develop a training video on wheel-end safety. To demonstrate the damage caused by a wheel-off, a plan was put into place to controllably release a tire and wheel assembly from a trailer traveling at highway speed and then place a parked car in its path. Nobody took the time to actually calculate the odds of pulling this off and filming it, but lightning struck on a cold Sunday morning in November. And when I say struck, I mean struck—right in the middle of the driver’s door, with a camera on the trailer to record the moment the wheels became loose and another camera on the inside of the car for a first-hand view of the impact. Add the camera behind the car and the slow-motion wide shot, and viewers get to see a real-life depiction of what happens when an inflated truck tire and wheel assembly strike a parked vehicle. If this footage doesn’t convince fleets and commercial tire dealers that wheel-end safety is a matter of life or death, then the future of both industries has to be in question. Summer months bring warmer temperatures and increased highway traffic, so training drivers and maintenance personnel to look for the signs of a potential wheel-end fire or wheel-off is more important than ever. TIA’s Wheel-End Safety video is available for free download at www.tireindustry.orgg and at MNA’s web site at www.michelintruck.com. Both organizations are encouraging everyone to copy and distribute the video to as many people as possible. In most cases, a wheel-off or wheel-end fire is preventable if those responsible for driving and maintaining the vehicles look for a few simple signs and follow basic procedures. This video will surely get their attention.

ohn “J.D.” Morrissette’s experience with do-ityourself repairs serves as a classic template for many trucking firms that have grown in size over the years. “When we originally started out with just a few trucks, and engines were simpler, we had a full-blown shop with all the tools,” says Morrissette of his family-owned moving company in Springfield, VA. “But as electronics and the need for specialized tools increased, we outsourced more and more work. Now, we’re primarily a preventive maintenance shop and we do repairs—brakes, suspension, hoses, minor exterior, electrical—but we send out engine electronics jobs.” Morrissette, president and director-fleet services, for Interstate Van Lines, a division of Interstate Worldwide Relocation, has 300 pieces of equipment that includes local- and long-distance trucks, tractors and trailers. “We have some computers,”

Making the do-it-yourself decision he says of doing electronic engine repairs, “but once you get into warranty issues, you don’t want to void [them].” “Every choice to send something out or do-it-yourself must stand on its own,” says Darry Stuart, who calls himself a “Limited Time Executive” rather than an outside consultant and whose company DWS Fleet Management Services is based in Wrentham, MA. “Consultants tell you what’s wrong but not necessarily how to fix it or make it work,” he says of his semantic preference. “I do both … I spend a lot of time at fleets and essentially semi take-charge. It’s different than consulting.” A former chairman of the Technol-

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

ogy and Maintenance Council of the American Trucking Assns., Stuart echoes others who suggest that engine repairs can be too technical and time-consuming and should be outsourced. “The majority of other work can be done in-house,” he adds. “Generally speaking, smaller fleets have to watch every penny. A guy with three to four trucks is doing most of his work himself. He might be trying to hire someone to work at night to do the overflow of things that need to be fixed, but he would want to fix everything he can in-house,” says Greg Manchik, president of F.J. Manchik & Son Trucking, Lenox, MI. Manchik follows his own advice, handling almost everything inhouse on his 10 gravel trains that carry gravel, sand and salt. “We do everything in-house except work on engines,” he says. “Alternators and water pumps are the exception, and we don’t do warranty work or engine overhauls.”

cover story Technicians need to know what types of repairs they can handle.

There are many factors, some of them somewhat hard to pin down, which determine if it’s more costeffective and efficient for your company to DIY or outsource. When Stuart’s clients ask him to assess whether they should repair in-house or outsource, he starts by running the numbers.

NUMBER CRUNCHING “It’s a simple formula,” he says, “depending upon how you cost-out your shop.” He assumes that an in-house mechanic, at a small fleet, might be billed at $15–$18 an hour for administrative purposes. “If you have 5 to 7 trucks and 15 trailers, then that’s enough to justify one person to support business but not the volume of work. One guy could take care of it in 25 hours, but he may be doing other things for the full 40 hours.” He notes that this person may also be doing non-mechanic tasks ranging from janitorial work to mowing the lawn. “Then you’re better off outsourcing, especially if the trucks are out making money and not in the garage when he wants to work on them.” The bottom line is that you need to know how you operate your business. The choice of outsourcing or in-house also depends on factors that have nothing to do with the

22 American Trucker/ r/July 2009

mechanic’s skills or his tools, adds Stuart. “You have to know how you run your business.” Morrissette agrees that running numbers comparing DIY with outsourcing can be frustrating at best and mysterious at worst. “We have looked at total outsourcing, but once you dig into it, it’s so fuzzy and difficult to figure if you can save money in the long run.” He currently has four technicians working 50-hour shifts. “When you go to them [outsourcer] to break down the numbers, sometimes they really can’t come back with defined numbers. They will say to me, ‘Well it depends on this and it depends on that.’ And I say, ‘Guys, whether I go with you depends upon nailing down these numbers, so I can truly understand them and make a comparison.’ ” Getting a total view of costs may not only be the fault of the outsourcing facility but a lack of understanding of a fleet’s internal costs, Morrissette admits. “Sometimes it’s even difficult to fully get control of our own internal costs because some things you just do and you don’t track very well.” For example, Morrissette will cut a repair order and have an hourly rate of $90 to $95 an hour. “I’ll show my mechanic’s

Go to

time on there, but also [that of] my shop administrator and an admin. Is their time really tied into it?” In another instance, he notes that one of their contract drivers may make a call to different shops and line up tires or suspension work that they may or may not end up outsourcing. “Have I really covered my direct expenses for these costs? Did all the parts make the ticket? In continuing to get the costs down to the penny, I may be spending more on auditing than the job itself would cost,” he says. And, as Stuart suggests, technicians often do other jobs. “We have property so we might need the technicians to do something over at the warehouse. I don’t have a ticket for that either,” adds Morrissette.

HAVING THE SKILLS Once a small fleet decides to do repairs in-house, the question becomes which ones? Douglas Weichman, director-fleet management for Palm Beach County, FL, has a solid grasp of what in-house technicians are able to tackle and what is best left to outside mechanics. His facility has only a few Class 8 trucks running mostly medium-duty equipment. “A mechanic should be able to do any kind of mechanical repair that

cover story doesn’t need scan tools—and you can do a lot more on older fleets, pre-2007. They can do fluids, water pumps, hose replacement, wipers … most anything that falls under ‘maintenance’ in the service manual. On pre-’07 they can do some exhaust work that is bolt-on/ boltoff … In fact, they should be able to handle anything that is bolt-on/ bolt-off.” He says that most mechanics can also swap out batteries and filters with no problems. “Could they do brakes? Probably, even if they didn’t have too much heavy mechanical experience and if they had the shop manual. Suspension? They might be able to do suspension work.” Electronic engines can present a tough choice. While most fleets stop at fixing engines, and rightly so experts suggest, some diagnostics can be run without sophisticated gear. “You don’t always need computers to fix engines,” says Manchik. He notes that by turning on the key, and holding it on, you can see the engine’s codes show up. “You can look at the chart and see the diagnosis. If you can’t, you must take it into the service center.” Being intimately involved in his trucks’ maintenance has paid off for Manchik. Seeing how much abuse his trailer suspensions were experiencing, and what a dirty, laborintensive job it was to repair them, he invented the “warepad’ about five years ago. Placed between the OEM’s hanger and equalizer and the leaf spring, this thermal plastic pad eliminates lubrication and creates a sliding motion between the moving parts, he says. Stuart agrees that most small fleet mechanics have the necessary background to do a lot of work in-house. “If you don’t have a full facility but a handy guy, you can do minor repairs—some PM work, oil changes, lights, changing an airbag—provided he’s productive,” he says. “If he

24 American Trucker/ r/July 2009

Fluid changes and other preventive maintenance work can be handled in-house. has tools, he can do work based on the extent of his tools and his knowledge. Where it really shuts down is auto shifts, which are electronically controlled, and engine repairs. “Your mechanic doesn’t have to be an expert, just mechanically inclined,” he adds. “If he can change oil on his lawnmower and sharpen the blade, then he can do minor repairs and save the fleet a lot of money. The average dealer cost [for repairs] is $85 to $125 an hour. A small independent garage is somewhere between $65 and $85 an hour and a leasing company is somewhere in between. If the numbers work and if your technician is productive, then you can do it in-house.”

THE FINAL COSTS Assuming that you’ve been able to cost-out the in-house expense versus sending a piece of equipment out for repair—and you’ve determined that your mechanic is up to the task— there are other considerations that weigh on the decision. One is convenience and control. “We don’t do outside repair because I think there’s an overriding convenience factor to keeping it in-house,” says Morrissette. “If the truck goes down, you can get it up and running again quickly and there’s a savings

Go to

associated with that.” Another issue is that outsourcers may do more work than is necessary, but not because they’re dishonest, says Stuart. Nonetheless, this can run up the cost of sending out work. He suggests that outsourcers sometimes sell parts and labor with “insurance in mind.” “What I mean by that is they have to protect themselves from fleet managers’ complaints about a different part breaking down after it leaves the shop, so they may make a repair much larger than it is,” Stuart explains. “For example, they might put in a filter even if it’s not necessary to make sure they don’t get complaints.” Conversely, an in-house technician might let a marginal filter ride a bit longer to save money and replace it only when absolutely necessary. There are also costs associated with getting trucks to the outside shop. “How do you factor in the expense of getting your truck to the shop. It takes two guys,” says Morrissette. “Some of the shops in the D.C. area are doing pickup and delivery because they’re in need of business, but somewhere they have to recoup those costs; somewhere it’s built into their costs. Somebody is paying for it. I’m stupid, but I’m not naïve.” AT

OILFIELD SERVICE

Spec tough in the field Oilfield work requires attention to detail to keep trucks running

H

Hauling freight down America’s highways is no easy picnic—for either man or machine—but the rough-and-tumble world of field service ratchets up the stress on equipment to a much higher level. Take the work American Tank Service performs in the oil patch out in Hays, KS, for example. Oil drilling equipment digs deep into the earth— up to 4,000 ft.—and comes up with water along with crude, midnight black petroleum. American Tank’s big Mack trucks, such as Granite, CH, RD, and RB models equipped with heavy-duty vacuum systems, take that messy, brackish water from collector tanks at the oil sites, pump it into truckmounted tanks, and transport it 20 to 30 mi. to special disposal sites where it’s pumped back into the ground. The trucks then haul salty water back to the drilling site, where it’s pumped into the drill shaft to mix with chemicals for cleaning and to help the drill grind farther into the ground. They also do double duty hauling water to help form cement casings around the drills and crude that can’t be used for processing. It may sound like easy, simple work, but it’s as far from that as the Earth is from the moon. Most of the miles American Tank’s Mack trucks traverse are bone-jarring, framerattling terrain. Smooth, state roads

28 American Trucker/ r/July 2009

become country roads so ragged and rutted with potholes and rocks they can’t be graded. The pathways to the drilling sites are even worse; they’re little more than primitive trails gouged out of the ground. More than one plastic dashboard or truck frame have been damaged by the constant vibrations and bouncing. Factor in seven-day-a-week operation, with trucks handling anywhere from 10 to 12 jobs a day when business is booming, and it’s easy to see the kind of punishment the trucks must absorb. To withstand the pounding, American Tank’s Mack models are overbuilt for durability. They max out at 54,000-lb. loaded weight, operate not one but three PTOs and come spec’d with military-style, heavy-duty suspensions. Engines run a wide gamut of makes and models, cranking out anywhere from 400 to 460 hp., but all come equipped with 18-spd. transmissions as the standard at American Tank. The company’s newest Granite Mack models now come spec’d with double frame rails and rugged 18,000- to 20,000-lb. capacity steering axles, plus a 44,000-lb. drive tandem with differential lock and camelback spring suspension, to handle any nasty surprise that might lay in wait in the field. Tires in particular get a brutal re-

Go to

ception in oil patch work. When it gets wet, American Tank must chain them up in order to drive—and sometimes the company must put in a call for a bulldozer to help drag its trucks through the muck. American Tank generally specs Goodyear Unisteel G177 severeservice tires on steer positions and G286 mixed-service tires. It also uses G286A SS wide-base ‘‘flotation tires’’ on the steer-axle position of some of its vehicles. The inflation pressure for all tires is maintained at 100 psi. The company reports that the deep tread of the G177 works well in the mud because it’s strong enough to resist punctures, which are a constant danger due to the off-road conditions. At the drive position, G287 MSA mixed-service tires perform well and last 55,000 to 60,000 mi. Traction is a major issue out in the field, American Tank reports, so tread life is critical as worn tires quickly lead to flat tires. The rugged terrain does require the company to rotate its tires every 10,000 mi., however, as the high crowns on the rutted country roads make the inner tires on the duals wear faster than the outer tires. While oilfield service may not be easy work, with the equipment spec’d the right way, it’s work that can be done consistently and well with minimal downtime.
