CARB’s laser focus

T

Two upcoming mandates by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) are going to require changes to a lot of trailers both inside and outside the Golden State over the next two years—for new and used models alike. The first is CARB’s transport refrigeration unit (TRU) airborne toxic control measure, pegged to go into full effect July 17 this year. It requires all refrigerated trailers operating in California that are more than seven years old to be modified or replaced to reduce particulate matter emissions—either by installing a CARB-approved diesel parCalifornia set to ticulate filter, a CARB-approved rebuilt engine, a CARB-approved new engine, enforce trailer rules. or a new 2008 model-year refrigeration unit. Now, when I say “all,” that means “all across the U.S.” So, even if you are based in Kansas and if your reefer trailers are hauling goods into California, you need to be in compliance. CARB also has a much broader greenhouse gas emissions reduction measure slated to go live Jan. 1, 2010, but this one only applies to fleets domiciled in the Golden State. It requires fleets operating 53-ft. refrigerated or dry van trailers to use models certified under the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program, or use trailer aerodynamic devices to achieve 5% fuel savings for dry vans and 4% fuel savings for reefers. Needless to say, this will result in a significant increase in costs for fleets serving California’s freight needs. We all want to improve fuel efficiency and reduce pollution, but doing so in this heavy-handed fashion is probably going to cause more harm than good in the long run. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out as the rules go into effect. AT

Wheel assemblies get a lift

T

he Blue-Point Wheel Lift Assist from Snap-on can lift wheel assemblies from the vehicle to the tire changer, to the wheel balancer, and back to the vehicle, eliminating much of the heavy lifting associated with tire wheel assembly repairs. The product works on light trucks and 19.5-in. truck wheel and tire assemblies commonly found on medium-duty vehicles. It can hold up to 130 lbs. of tire/wheel weight, lift a tire with a diameter range of 24 to 36 in., and hoist a tire/wheel 29 in. high. In addition, it automatically adjusts for different tire sizes and helps the user align the tire and wheel assemblies with the hub studs. “Our innovative Blue-Point Wheel Lift Assist virtually eliminates manual lifting of tire and wheel assemblies,” said Mike DeKeuster, product manager for Snapon. “When used properly, Snap-on’s Blue-Point Wheel Lift Assist not only minimizes effort, but it eliminates wheel balancer shaft damage and bending.” www.snapon.com/wheellift

MaxxForce 15L to be ready for 2010 N sel to its MaxxForce engine line by combining the basic block and architecture of Caterpillar’s existing C15 engine with its own fuel and emissions systems. Available in 2010, it will offer on-highway and heavy-haul fleets a higher power option than its MaxxForce 13 engine with ratings from 435 to 550 hp., according to Eric Tech, vp & gm for Navistar’s engine group. Like the company’s other diesels, the new 15L will use exhaust gas recirculation only to meet the new 2010 emissions regulations, or what is being called “an in-cylinder solution.” The other common 2010 emissions solution is selective catalytic reduction, which treats exhaust gases after they leave the engine. Late last year, Caterpillar announced that it would not develop a heavy-duty truck engine to meet the 2010 requirements and would exit the truck market. At the same time, it entered into an agreement with Navistar to produce a severe service truck under the Caterpillar brand as well as work on other un-

specified projects. The MaxxForce 15 was the first of those projects to be formally announced. Navistar had a working version of the new 15 liter on view at a recent trade show, but said it would not be available until sometime after January 2010. Preliminary specs for the Cat-derived diesel include 15.2L displacement, twin-turbocharger with intercooling and aftercooling, a direct injection fuel system based on Navistar’s current MaxxForce technology, and peak torque ranging from 1,550 to 1,850 lbs.-ft. www.maxxforce.com

7-in. headlamp released

T

ruck-Lite declared its newest 12V product the world’s first 7-in. round, DOT-compliant LED headlamp for commercial applications. According to John Howells, vp-sales for The Americas, forward lighting by a 12V LED headlamp results in brighter, crisper and whiter light output than incandescent alternatives as well as the longer life and greater dependability that has become expected of LED signaling and marking products. Howells said the headlamp features solid-state circuit board assemblies for unrivaled shock and vibration resistance and hard-coated polycarbonate lenses that offer 30 times more impact strength than glass. The lamps have undergone extreme weather testing at military installations in Panama, Arizona and Alaska with exceptional results, noted Howells. They meet or exceed all applicable DOT requirements pertaining to headlights, which he said are one of the most difficult standards to achieve. Designed to replace any standard 7-in. round headlight within 12V applications, the lamps can be aimed using standard mechanical aiming equipment. Made in the U.S., each headlamp uses ten highoutput LEDs as its light source, with a light output brighter than traditional glass beam headlights, which results in better visibility. While a typical headlamp may be rated to last as little as 1,200 hrs., Howells said Truck-Lite’s LED headlamps are expected to exceed that by as much as 50 times. www.truck-lite.com

Low-cost hybrid reefer unit C arrier Transicold has unveiled its Vector 6500 hybrid refrigeration unit for single-temperature trailers. The reefer unit is powered by Carrier’s exclusive hybrid dieselelectric Deltek technology. “With its all-electric architecture, the Vector 6500 is a high-performance unit designed for both exceptional reliability and low cost of ownership,” said David Kiefer, director of marketing and product management. He said the nextgeneration unit “builds on the success of our hybrid Vector 1800MT multi-temperature unit.” The Vector 6500’s refrigeration capacity rivals the performance of the top-of-the-line trailer unit from Carrier’s X2 series, which it closely resembles on the exterior. Accord-

ing to Carrier, unlike a conventional system that runs all mechanically connected components via belts and pulleys whenever the engine runs, the Vector system only powers components needed at any given time, which can save fuel by reducing the engine load. Carrier’s Deltek technology uses a diesel engine to drive a 23 kW electric generator. This powerplant generates enough current to run all system components such as fans and the 6-cyl. 06D semi-hermetic compressor with its electric motor sealed inside, noted Kiefer. In addition, he said the independent electric-resistance heating elements provide precise temperature control when heat is required. www.trucktrailer.carrier.com

Additive promises clean fuelburn D

escribed as an environmentally friendly fuel additive designed to break down hydrocarbon molecule chains, Mach3 SEFS-HD is said to allow gas and diesel fuels to burn more completely. According to Ecomotive Products Inc., this produces more efficient combustion, resulting in increased mileage and reduced harmful emissions. Ecomotive said testing of its Mach3 SEFS-HD was performed in accordance with SAE J1321 Type II fuel-efficiency test procedures. The tests were done at an independent EPA-recognized lab and showed a 13% increase in fuel economy in gasoline-fueled vehicles, and a 16% increase in fuel economy for diesel-fueled vehicles.

Procuring parts Moving to one all-makes parts supplier saves fleet time and money Jaime Roberts sums up his experience as a maintenance manager working in the refuse industry bluntly and to the point: It’s a business that literally eats up trucks. Relentless stop-and-go operation, followed by trips to landfills littered with debris and detritus that can irreparably damage a whole slew of truck components means it’s absolutely critical for Roberts to put his hands on replacement parts with as little delay as possible. Yet Roberts, maintenance manager for Stafford Transport’s main location in Mableton, GA, along with a secondary site in Jacksonville, FL, also found himself stretched pretty thin trying to manage the parts needs for a mixed fleet of 68 heavy-duty day cab Kenworth

T800s, 15 Sterling LT9500s and five Mack CH613 tractors. Stafford also operates about 250 48-ft. and 53-ft. thick-walled, aluminum tipping trailers, plus 16 39-ft. dump trailers. Trying to coordinate the necessary parts for all this equipment through three dealerships, plus managing his own onsite parts inventory, ate up a lot of time and money. Stafford runs a very lean and mean fleet operation, so Roberts also couldn’t risk any vehicle downtime due to a part being out of stock. “We run just enough trucks in our fleet to cover our routes,” explains Roberts. “Everything we have has to be running on the streets and not waiting here in the yard for replacement parts to arrive.”

In order to cut costs yet not skimp on availability, Roberts decided to contract with Paccar Parts and two local affiliated dealerships to handle the bulk of Stafford’s needs. As a result, he saved $30,000 by significantly reducing his onsite inventory, relying on Paccar Parts and local dealers MHC Kenworth-Atlanta and Kenworth of Jacksonville to take care of all his aftermarket truck part needs, even though Stafford’s fleet is comprised of trucks made by three different OEMs. “All we have to do is send over our parts list by noon, and they make sure we get the parts we need that evening,” says Roberts. “We rely on both local dealers to have the parts we need on hand, or we get them from one of Pac-

car’s distribution centers. It’s good to know that we can rely on just one source for all of our part needs, particularly now that Sterling will stop manufacturing trucks.” “I have a full list of all their operating equipment, so there is no time wasted on trying to get the right information on the right vehicle,” says Alejandro Gonzalez, the parts specialist at MHC Kenworth-Atlanta. “Access to all-make parts through Paccar Parts is a great resource, since we can supply [Stafford] with a quality product at a great turnaround and be price-competitive at the same time.” “Basically, now we get our parts faster and cheaper, with less work on my part,” adds Roberts. “And in the refuse business, that’s an enormous advantage.”

Bendix takes active approach to braking

B

endix Commercial Vehicle Systems unveiled its Wingman ACB (Active Cruise with Braking) safety system, which the company said delivers warnings and proactive interventions to help drivers avoid collisions as well as data to help with fleet operations and driver training. Bendix said the system builds on its ESP full-stability technology. A radar sensor mounted to the front of the vehicle assists drivers in keeping a set following distance between their truck and the vehicle in front of them. With cruise control on and speed set, Bendix said the Wingman ACB will warn and provide active interventions—reducing throttle, engaging the engine retarder and, if necessary, automatically applying the foundation brakes to help the driver maintain the intended following distance. When cruise control is not engaged, the driver still gets the benefit of following distance alerts. Bendix also pointed out the inclusion of its ESP full-stability technology helps drivers mitigate rollover and loss-of-control situations. Drivers activate the system using the existing cruise control switches in the vehicle. Information, warnings and operation of the Wingman system are incorporated into the vehicle dash in direct view of the driver. Following distance can be customized using Bendix ACom diagnostics software (version 6.3 or higher). In addition, Bendix said the Wingman system provides data that fleets can use to help improve

driver performance by targeting specific driver needs for training. Following distance, use of cruise control and even stability events are available from the system through easy download using Bendix ACom software. Bendix Wingman ACB is available for fleets to order today, with vehicle delivery in early July. “As active safety systems that automatically apply brakes increase, they will be built on a foundation of full stability,” said Fred Andersky, marketing director for the Bendix controls product business team. “Why? Because roll-only systems don’t possess all the sensors and braking capability needed to interpret conditions and respond appropriately—and may increase instability of the vehicle during automatic braking events on slick surfaces. Therefore, full stability is a critical part of systems that include an active braking component.” www.bendix.com

Beware of patching

T

repair has been on my mind a lot lately, because I’ve been working on a new training addresses the topic. When I was a (much) younger tech, I quickly developed a comfort level when repairing tires and sometimes found myself standing at a spreader for hours repairing tire after tire. In the old days, we patched everything from the inside because (we thought) that Improper repairs was the way to do it. As it turned out, we were shorten a tire’s half right. There are two critical lifecycle and components to every tire repair and a patch is create dangers. definitely the first. When properly applied, it is molecularly bonded to the innerliner of the tire and serves as a permanent seal after it has been breached. I’ve seen tires run flat to the point where the belt package was completely gone, yet the repair units that were installed correctly were still in place. It’s a process called vulcanization and when all of the ingredients are in place, the bond between the innerliner and the patch will be impossible to break. But there is more to repairing a tire than stopping the leak, which is why on-the-wheel, or plug, repairs are not recognized by any tire manufacturers. The primary reason is that unless the tire is removed from the rim, damage to the innerliner cannot be seen. Sometimes an object that penetrates the tread may also damage the sidewall. If a tire is returned to service with unseen interior damage, it will fail shortly after it has been installed even when it still holds air after it has been plugged. By definition, a repair must restore the original condition of the tire. In order to achieve that goal, the damage to the belt package and body cables must be

18 American Trucker/ r/June 2009

removed. This is another area where the on-the-wheel plug repair fails to measure up. Each belt package is a series of individual cables that are comprised of smaller wires. When the cables are damaged, the wires have a natural tendency to unwind as the tire flexes and adapts to different road surfaces. Plugging the tire from the outside does not remove these damaged cables and as a result, belt separations are not uncommon after the plug is applied. Likewise, when a patch is installed on the innerliner without removing the damage, a belt separation is imminent if the tire is left in service for a long enough time. To make matters worse, the hole in the tread allows water and moisture to penetrate the steel belts so a small injury can destroy a casing because rust and corrosion spread like cancer. That’s why the second critical component of a tire repair is to remove the damage with a carbide cutter and fill the injury with a rubber stem. The average driver will think the technician is “making the hole bigger,” but the reality is that the cutter trims the cables back to solid rubber and stabilizes the area. And when the rubber stem is vulcanized in the same way as the patch, it becomes a permanent part of the tire. Restoring the tire back to its original condition after a repair requires a number of steps, each one just as important as the next. Some service providers will attempt to convince their fleet customers that they are doing it right because they are patching the inside of the tire. But if the damage isn’t removed and the injury filled with a rubber stem, the tire is either a belt separation waiting to happen or another casing headed to the scrap pile.

igher performance batteries are popular among truck fleets running large numbers of vehicle electronics and cab accessories. Now, with idling restrictions and hybrid vehicle usage becoming more widespread, batteries are having to work hard to handle the shift in power from the truck engine to the electrical system. Optima Batteries has the right product for the job. Its line of Group 31 batteries for truck fleets features deep-cycling capabilities. According to the manufacturer, the Yellow Top’s large reserve capacity allows drivers to run equipment with their engines turned off, without fear of depleting the battery’s reserve to the point where it cannot be replenished or it will become damaged. Optima deep-cycle batteries can be recharged more often over their lifetime compared with a traditional battery. The company recommends the Group 31 Yellow Top for all over-the-road fleets. Later this year, the company will also be releasing a new Group 27F battery for truck fleets with even larger reserve capacity. EnerSys also offers a deep-cycle Group 31 battery called Odyssey that uses a pure lead design rather than lead calcium. “This offers significant advantages including longer shelf life, quicker recharge and greater cranking power in a smaller package,” says Kalyan Jana, development support manager-specialty markets at EnerSys. The pure lead-acid Odyssey battery, Jana explains, can “continuously cycle while producing a very high rate of cranking/engine pulses. It can also be 80 to 90% charged in less than one hour with a good charger.” Mil Ovan, senior vp and co-founder of Firefly Energy, says his company’s Oasis Group 31 truck battery “might be more expensive in terms of initial purchase price compared to traditional batteries, but the actual cost of ownership over its service life can result in significant savings in terms of fewer batteries used, reduced maintenance, downtime and service disruption.” The Oasis battery uses microcell foam technology to provide high runtime and greater number of deep discharge cycles. It has broad applicability for on-highway and delivery trucks, including powering liftgates, reefer units and accessories in sleeper cabs. This summer, the

manufacturer is releasing a new Oasis deep-cycle VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) battery that features advanced materials and design to provide even greater energy storage performance. Interstate Batteries offers a variety of Group 31 battery products for the Class 4-8 truck fleet marketplace, including liquid electrolyte and VRLA/sealed lead-acid AGM batteries. Last year, the company introduced its highest cranking battery to date—the 31-XHD—which provides 1,000 CCA (cold cranking amps). It is fully sealed and has a flat top/contoured design for retrofit into virtually any existing Group 31 hold-down application. Doyle Choate, director of U.S. heavy-duty aftermarket sales for Exide Technologies, says one challenge for today’s truck fleet owner is balancing the increased workload placed on batteries with expectations regarding lifespan. Fleets “are accustomed to thinking about battery life in terms of months, but battery life also is measured in terms of cycles. The same number of cycles can be expended in a shorter time period. ’’ The primary factors driving development of heavy-duty truck batteries are the increased energy needs during both key-on and key-off periods, plus the need to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, notes Choate. To help address these requirements, Exide introduced a series of Group 31 batteries with AGM technology marketed under the name RoadForce AGM-200. —DEBORAH MCGUFFIE-SCHYHOL

good for the environment, it creates a positive perception of the operation, and perhaps most importantly, it reduces fuel costs by improving mpg and decreasing idling. As fuel prices dramatically rose to unheard of heights last year, idle reduction technologies became the hottest topic in the industry. “When diesel was approaching $5/ gal., people did not need the federal government to tell them not to idle,” notes Joe Tario, project manager, transportation and power systems research at the New York State Energy and Research Development Authority (NYSERDA). As a result, suppliers of idle reduction systems saw huge spikes in demand, sometimes more than even the largest companies could accommodate. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), its SmartWay affiliate partners reported annual sales of over 86,000 idle control devices in the past four quarters, with an associated fuel savings of over 115 million gal. “We’ve seen a huge growth in our business,” says John Dennehy, vp of marketing for Espar Heater Systems. “We saw 15% growth from 2007 to 2008, and that was on top of 20 to 25% growth the year prior.” Today, the urgency may have abated, but the interest in idle reduction remains. “People are continuing to look at APUs [auxiliary

APU. “Besides, fuel is still higher than it was a few years ago. It still hurts the bottom line; it is just not as acutely painful as it was.” It’s obvious that idle reduction technologies are now here to stay. “At this point, it is pretty clear that idle reduction will continue to be important,” notes Dr. Linda Gaines of Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Transportation Research, Energy Systems Div. “Reducing fuel use with strategies like idle reduction are true win-win opportunities. I don’t see any barriers. It is more a question of which direction the technology will take going forward.” According to Gaines and many other industry observers, the road forward will be determined by a number of factors, including the idling patterns of various fleets. “It seems to me that there are opportunities for everything now depending on the type of operation and on what a fleet needs,” says Michael Tunnell, director of environmental research for the American Transportation Research Institute. “There will be a need for a variety of idle reduction options for some time to come. We still get calls from companies developing new solutions, too. This story isn’t finished yet.”

FINDING THE GREEN The technologies available to accomplish these tasks, though, are not cheap. Be they APUs,

tions, and where is the money located? Part of the answer, believe it or not, comes from the federal government. State and local revenue sources are also available if you know where to look. The recent American Recovery and Reinvestment Act signed into law by President Barack Obama included millions of dollars for clean energy and clean diesel projects. Getting a slice of that pie if you’re a small fleet, though, might not be as easy as it sounds. The list to access funds is long, according to Dave Orton, communications manager at Coburg, OR-based Cascade Sierra Solutions. “Somebody coming in now is probably going to be on the waiting list,” he says. Cascade Sierra is dedicated to reducing emissions from heavyduty engines. The company focuses on Washington, Oregon and California, but it’s one of the few nonprofit companies in the country dedicated to this cause. Its web site, www.cascadesierrasolutions. org, g includes local and federal regulations and links to resources that can help anyone, regardless of location, learn more about available grants and tax credits. Orton advises interested parties to reach out to one of the ten EPA regional offices. A complete list along with contact information is available on the EPA’s web site (www.epa.gov). “Owner-ops don’t

The EPA says the program, which began in September 2008, has averaged 350 applicants a month. Many states also have programs available, Orton adds. Information on some of those programs can be found at www.epa. gov/cleandiesel/prgstate.htm. Orton also suggests checking the Dept. of Energy web site (www. doe.gov). If you’d rather, an Internet search can be just as helpful in providing leads. help. The best advice seems to be the old adage, “If you don’t know, ask.” Peterbilt and Eaton are just two of the companies that offer grant-writing help for fleets looking to take advantage of government programs. California has been taking the lead in green technologies; as a result, carriers that do business in the state have little choice but to comply. The state, though, is trying to ease the financial pain. “Green is the hottest topic in the world today,” says Jim Thor, senior vp of retail sales for Rush Truck Centers. “The most difficult part of going green is accessing all the funds currently available, so we’ve hired a consultant to help us stay on top of it.” The Golden State offers several programs to help fund idle reduction and other green technologies. The Carl Moyer Memorial Air Quality Standards Attainment Program, the Fleet Modernization Program, and the $1 billion Proposition 1B are just a few of the areas where carriers can look for funding help.

s our economy begins to improve, it becomes of the utmost importance to have long-term customers in place. Our first objective needs to be keeping the quality customers we currently have. Step one in customer retention is being aware of your customer’s wants and needs. Step two is developing a long-term strategy that will accomplish those goals. Typically, the one common denominator every customer wants is value. It stands to reason as you develop your strategy that value becomes your customer’s No. 1 concern. What is the best method

26 Am American Trucker/ Trucker er/ /June 2009

B Y T I M B R A D Y, BUSINESS EDITOR to find what your customers want and need? Just ask. As the economy changes, so does the market being served. You must stay on top of how those changes will affect the services you provide, thus creating the needed value to the customer. To accomplish this requires a proactive rather than a reactive approach. Here’s a list of proactive steps that will assist in this endeavor: X Perform customer satisfaction surveys on every load or job once completed. Be sure to include the question, “How can our service be

Go to to

improved in the future?” X Monitor trends and news within each client’s specific industry. X Are there rules and regulations coming down the pike that will impact customers or their hauling needs? X What is the economic outlook for your shippers’ particular industry? X What is the competition doing? X Track customers as if you had invested in their company, because in effect you have when you haul for them. X Always look for ways to improve the job. X Listen to the concerns of your shippers and receivers and address them immediately.

X Constantly communicate with both shipper and receiver about what’s going on with their shipments.

KEEPING CUSTOMERS You’ve got to stay on your toes at all times to retain your customers. This is especially true in hard economic times. But just being proactive in how you understand your customers’ needs is only one aspect of keeping your customers. A lot of trucking companies drop the ball when they become too complacent, because they have gotten used to hauling for a particular shipper over a long period of time. Never take your customers for granted. Recently, I heard of a company that had been hauling expedited machine replacement components for several years. This company had a super deal, as it was being paid the same rate for both loaded and empty miles even though it had found great paying return freight. When this company went out of its normal freight lane and didn’t have any return freight, not only was it paid for the loaded and empty miles, but the customer was charged an additional $1,000 to deliver to the area. The shipper finally figured out what the carrier was doing. Although the carrier was doing a good job, the shipper put the freight out for bid. Not only did a new carrier eliminate the $1,000 out-of-lane fee, but it only charged the shipper an empty miles fee if the truck had to return empty. The customer agreed to pay the difference between the

Go to

empty miles fee and the rate the new carrier received on the return load, if any. Lesson learned? While the previous carrier was doing everything correctly in providing the service to the shipper, he took the shipper for granted and got greedy. Now that carrier is without a lucrative hauling contract.

The cost of maintaining a new customer is far less than the cost of finding new business. To keep from taking customers for granted, here are some actions you can take: X Constantly look for ways to cut costs and save money without reducing service quality. X Save customers money by monitoring the procedures required to pick up and deliver shipments, and recommend ideas that can streamline and expedite the process. X Keep customers in the cost loop by communicating with them and have them actively participate in cost control. X Continually scrutinize all your costs and communicate with your customers when costs are increasing. X Do small incremental rate increases when necessary, rather than a large across-the-board increase. This shows respect for your customers by not creating a situation where they have to try to absorb a sudden large increase. (Keep in mind a large rate increase will

Trucker.com for used equipment listings

cause most shippers to start shopping for a better deal, regardless of how good your service is.) X Be willing to adjust the rates you charge your customer if costs are significantly reduced. To develop your customer base for the long haul, be mindful that not just you and your company are facing hard economic times; your customers are right there with you. Working and improving revenue and profits is a team effort for all concerned. Be sure your shippers and receivers are part of this team. To make sure both you and your customers emerge from this downturn in good financial shape, it will take good communication, attention to detail, forward thinking, and evaluation of past mistakes. In a business environment where keeping costs down and maintaining current revenue levels is paramount to staying afloat, keep in mind the cost of maintaining a good customer is far less than the cost of finding and developing new business. This all comes back to knowing the customer’s wants and needs and then exceeding them both. This creates value for your shippers and receivers—and that value is what will keep them with you for the long haul. AT Contact Tim Brady at tbrady@writeuptheroad.com or call (731) 749-8567. Today, the specialized furniture transportation company is a single entity that includes Caldwell Freight Lines, Foothills Trucking Co., and MGM Transportation Corp., all consolidated under CF Holding Co. This spring, Lance Transportation, which serves the Gulf States, was also acquired and merged into Caldwell Freight Lines to create a business that now operates throughout the U.S. and Canada. with multiple warehousing facilities, some 300 tractors from various truck OEMs, and about 1,200 trailers. “The acquisition of Lance gave us a big opportunity with Mississippi-based furniture manufacturers that we did not have before,” says Brenner. “We feel we now have the broadest coverage of anybody in this business. People want to know you have coverage; that is very important. We can direct deliver to about 95% of the population today.” According to Brenner, FTG should do about $100 million in business this year and grow market share in the bargain. “As our name suggests, we specialize in LTL ser-

Our shippers are off about 35%, and we are seeing smaller shipments and more low-end merchandise. We are also carrying more sold merchandise than merchandise to be placed into stock. Still, we believe we are gaining market share, and now we are also starting to see signs of recovery.” Acquisitions alone do not account for FTG’s growth and success, Brenner notes. The kinds of services the company provides are also critical to their success. FTG designed its own freight management system in-house, for example, and maintains a staff of about five people in the IT group today. “Transit time is always important in the LTL business,” he says, “but we also offer warehousing and deconsolidation plus light assembly as well as home delivery. We can break out that freight, label it and then let shippers, consignees and customers pull their own proof of delivery documents.” Like other trucking operations, FTG is seeing an uptick in people applying for driving positions. “There are people in the lobby every morning asking to fill out job applications,” he says. Not surprisingly, however, the company enjoys low driver turnover. “Our trucks go out with an average of 12 to 14 stops per dispatch,” says Brenner, who began in the trucking business himself, loading trucks as a college student in New Jersey. “Drivers go out, get a backhaul and come home. They are not dispatched again while they are on the road. “If a driver wants to be home on the weekends and once during the week, for instance, we can accommodate that,” he explains. “We just give him a short run. Being able to have a predictable schedule that works for you and your family is a huge plus.”
